Shockerland TV - Episode 4 (Baylor and SDSU recaps, Oklahoma St. preview, worst gameday experience)

hey and welcome into shocker land I'm Billy Beiler with Kyle Amos and welcome to episode number four we're talking shocker basketball men's basketball and here's what we're to do this week we're talking about the Baylor game a good quality win for the shockers go into this South Dakota State game and then look ahead a little bit to what the shockers done and then at the end we've got a couple of rants I think we're gonna talk about the experience of Washington game at Koch arena and the good and the bad yes so let's dive right in we are we got to move because we are on the hot seat so to speak kind of it early calculate if you can see an actual fire there's a fire going pouring back in the set that my wife created that was definitely not for our shockers podcast but yeah it's cold outside so another good reason that I think basketball is the greatest for whatever it is into this yes so indoors is great um but let's start I guess we'll start with Baylor will go in order okay I want to talk more about South Dakota State than I do Baylor that I would not have guessed that I would say that Senate uh-huh any point in my life but I do but we will get to South Dakota State there's so much to break down from that game a close win for the shockers let's go to Baylor first Baylor was ranked still is two will be up but that was a quality win for the shockers I gotta wrote the story on that and it was the big win the signature win not let's not go too far on it but it was a good quality win that the shocker is kind of needed right they didn't need it yeah I mean it's the Baylor is number 16 at the time in Waco so get on the road win the space we use the top 25 opponent is huge and like you mention your article this this was an opportunity that the chakras really haven't taken advantage of the past two or three seasons in the non-conference so to get this win helps them immensely for seeding purposes come selection sunday and just looks good on the resume help sir there you know ranking and everything okay I'm a guy I I like the hot takes ok I like to stay say the big de mantra things maybe even exaggerate a little that's me I tried not to do that my story of how important was for the Shockers to beat Baylor but but it was it was important could we have argued that before that win was there a was there at least a little bit of a reputation that the shockers couldn't win the big game it had been a while let's just say that since they had a really big win against a quality opponent against a ranked opponent when was the last big one I mean you had Dayton in the NCAA tournament but it in a while maybe I think you know that Ohio State game to get him to the Final Four was that the last time they had a big against a ranked opponent win it would not not a ranked opponent win yeah I know they've beaten northern Iowa when they were obscene and they beat Utah when they were 24th I believe and so they've had a few top 25 wins throughout the years but you're right we the Tigers have don't get a lot of these opportunities they'll get more of them in the new conference yeah there's a knock that has been on them in the past that they haven't been able to win these big games you mention last year they're only really good wind was against Dayton and Herrmann yeah and a lot of people see Dayton as you know a mid-major though they are a top program but they soccer is were top ten and camp on last year but didn't have a single top 25 win so it probably could have been fair to say that the shockers couldn't win the big game beforehand granted and you made a good point they just haven't had that many opportunities right I mean it's been in Kentucky a picket look I'm just yeah it seems like the big woody goes well how state then they didn't have that big win against Kay you as well now yes that was a big one but that's all tournament play that's that's not yeah this had to be the biggest outside of Emily tournament this is the biggest one they've had and I say three years at least yeah so regardless whether it would or not it was fair to say they can't win the big game they can't now can they did and I expect more of these this season yeah so am i blowing that up too much and calling it's a a signature well I don't think it's great Marshalls signature win but it was a quality win they needed that's true and that surprises me that you're doing that what has you said these games don't matter you're right keep me accountable ease non-conference wins don't matter I think we have that on video we do episode 1 and and and they don't and I think in February we're gonna be realizing how much they don't matter as much but man it was good to have it's good it's very to have wasn't enough yeah yeah no doubt ok so that's so that's Baylor and the shockers were able and I think also on baylor baylor ran a 131 zone defense that was fantastic it was not only you know setting up that that zone to where they were given the shockers trouble in the areas they were covering they also had their hands up and they were swatting passes away they looked good zone looked good I wrote about this and said this was the best known I think the shockers have faced all season Howell is and he'll be and maybe maybe Central Florida's will be better than that but Baylor is just so long and athletic and tall and my goodness other guys seem to be six eight and seven feet tall yeah you know seven foot wingspans and so to win that game when we we talked about their struggles in with the zone yeah and they were able to score points and the shockers beat it they beat the zone finally and so I don't know that that's gonna deter future opponents from playing a zone I think we will still see that especially how about fence play but it went a long way at least for me just as a spectator to say oh okay peace of mind it's not kryptonite that was trying to enlighten crew that's not the Kryptonite anymore that it probably was before that game so good quality win there against Baylor then the game that I overlooked and I don't know maybe the shockers did as well but South Dakota State which is a state they are a came to Koch arena and gave the shockers a hard time yeah i goodness you were at this game you wrote the story you had a great take on it okay so I think here's what happened the Shockers were were losing and and then they were worse they were struggling and now that that my 13 at one point is I'm gonna have and in the second half you can give them ten minutes to have a flat night or whatever but the second half they're losing the South Dakota State by 13 points what in the world eventually they come back and win okay they finally get their act together and they you know South Dakota State shooting lights out you know give them a round of applause because they they were amazing the first 30 minutes they have this guy Mike Tom who was the n-c-double-a scoring leader last year he he was just unstoppable and they they had a chance to win that game they really did well okay and so I I wonder I think I'm not sure but I think there's probably a lot of shockers fans who are not happy about this game I know during Marshall was it at halftime not because we saw there's video evidence there's a clip going around Twitter and the Internet's that um Greg Marshall is storming through the men went through the bench even Moses longer than at halftime yeah he was not happy you and you're losing this out to go to stay at home you shouldn't be happy probably but you wrote about you're okay with that name you're and again they came back and won so that's a good thing why are you not upset about being down by 13 just to South Dakota stay on ranked South Dakota State why does that not bother you I guess I've just become more up to me okay guys older yeah not as negative as I used to be but even when the Shockers were down 8 10 13 in that second half I'm I was a little worried a little cautious but I was like I think the day the better team usually wins yeah and I knew their beard I knew there would be a run I knew South Dakota State with cool off a little bit and because of chakras one I feel this is really good for them going forward because they have this experience coming back just like they did against Cal and Maui and so they can win these games even with their down 10 15 points going forward even into the NCAA tournament they can say hey guys we're down now but we've done this before we have experience with this and it'll be good for them remember San Diego State did you send the a go state and South Dakota State to me they're the same thing if you feel very different but those letters s and D no I I get that Gregg Marshalls gonna say you remember that South Dakota State yeah it's they're gonna be they're going to be playing Kentucky hopefully in the next time yeah not around the 32 and and they're gonna be down and great Marshalls gonna be like remember South Dakota State because and here's why also and I agree with you it's I know it's a better podcast and a better video when we don't agree and we can argue but no I agree with you on this it's not a big deal for this game it's it's I'm not too worried about it one because we know and we've known this for a long time with shockers everybody's gonna bring their best game yes against his team especially the unranked opponents and so who was the Savannah State came in and tried to just jack up a bunch of threes and because they knew that's the only chance they have okay and the first ten minutes of that game they did it was clean yeah okay but then they cooled off quicker because their Savannah State team one of the other day South Dakota State came in and had pretty much the same approach jack up a bunch of three now it was more structured there yeah but they hit them they hit threes unbelief times but over 60% the first half and insane and I that's a good numbers I wasn't sure about that because I was not at the game I was not watching it on TV because of the Cox monopoly and there's a there's a ramp there somewhere that I will do one other day um so I had to listen on the radio and poured the radio guys they lost their stat monitor for most of the game and so they couldn't tell us exactly how well they were shooting but it was obvious South Dakota State was hitting a lot of three-pointers and so with a lot of three-pointers being shot and made it just happens sometimes right that does but still the best team one the better team one was there anything that you saw in that second half that told you okay the cosmic fairness is happening now a lot of averages returner yeah did you see what wasn't about the second half I think what really changed it was when the Shockers went to a full court press okay then we got I think we only turn a couple or had a couple turnovers because of that but they just it changed the flow of the game and made San Diego State no no it just changed their whole offense and could not be dude more different places in the United States but sorry go ahead yes I don't know what I was saying there but it would have been good but yeah I just I think the full-court press your things things and it just they the Jack Graham is cooled off I mean you can't I mean you can but it's really hard to shoot 60% yes we got the entire game down especially they were they were 8 for 12 shooting the three-pointers in the first half and you just you can't keep doing that yeah well when I when I see good content out there I'll tell you guys about Taylor Eldridge from Wichita you go how to had an amazing breakdown of how the shockers made an adjustment on the ball screen on the the screens around the perimeter and they changed the way they guarded it and I you could see this it was obvious and Taylor did a good job of showing it as well in his story go go look that up online but that's what made the difference then you're right there's that second half adjustment Greg Marshall made you know and your story on shock Elaine calm also talked about the different experiences now that the Shockers have had and and you've mentioned that as well this was just a good experience this is one they needed to let them know yeah you're ranked number what is a six now say in the nation but even unranked South Dakota State if they have a good night you got to play some ball oh yeah I got to come in here let me ask you this as well we had talked about this in the pre-show but whatever thrown it at your you ready um the atmosphere you know garena I again I was not there I kept hearing about this how was it electric what was it like being in the building for most of the first half it was pretty dead yeah and then the last five minutes of the first half that crowd got into it because the shock has made a couple little good plays and then the second half there was nothing for a while then midway through the second half shockers came back to life the crowd got into it and it was just the most electric environment and Coke in the past two or three years just everyone was standing cheer loudly my seats from the very top row yeah so I don't always get to hear everything that everyone else does but it was loud up there and so I can't even imagine how how loud it was down on the floor yes breaking news Shaka Lancome does not have press row access is indicating we'll get there one day but in the yes I talked about this we did maybe the first or second episode about how I yeah my big bold prediction for being the year was the Shockers are gonna go undefeated at home I did not see how because for this game but and and my reasoning behind it was I think shockers fans are just so ready for competition for a good competitive home game which we just have not had now play special thing in the Missouri Valley there have been close games there have been losses but a lot of time is either on the road or it's in postseason play which is never you know at home court so did we get a my other job we call it oh what a foretaste of glory divine did we get a little prevail is just above what it might look like when one of the top teams and the American Conference comes to town yes I can't even imagine how electric cook will be yeah Cincinnati SMU temple Central Florida come to Wichita because the shockers Sacre nation is fantastic the fans cheer loudly they will they will yell until they lose their voices like I did last night and we love it it's something to do it's it makes us happy and when those great schools come to Wichita is just going to be bed level and can I say I don't this might be wrong I don't know but as say like a shockers fan or a fan of whatever team I would rather have a buzzer-beating win a close win than just another 35 point blowout and we have had nothing last two years or a few years we've had nothing but 35 point blowouts at home almost there have been some scares but and that's that should be I guess I know that's what Gregg Marshall probably was he wanted nothing but yeah a lot every time yeah but it is so much more exciting when it's a competitive team now you wish it was not you know you wish it was Oklahoma or Oklahoma State right Cincinnati or you know one of the good teams rather than South Dakota State but they proved South Dakota State proved they're a good program and some teams they didn't get blown out by kayuu we won't talk about that but yeah so I think close games are good for fan experience an atmosphere and Koch arena which we have not had in the past and it's just a good experience like you said for tournament play for you know down the road when you're you're a tight situation Gregg Marshall can say but remember this tight game remember what we did remember the comeback that we had so for all those reasons you cover all those in your story on shock and landcom it was a good experience when not oh how ashamed I am for only meeting South Dakota State by 10 no there would have been shame if the Shockers had lost yeah I didn't care what the margin is if you win and to win and you move on and they can their defense wasn't the best in the first half but it was adequate and so they can it can make some changes and provements but for me I think it was it was a blessing because here they just were coming off of a huge win at Baylor they have two more big 12 opponents next at Oklahoma State and then home against Oklahoma and so this was kind of a wake-up call say hey you guys shockers are good but you're not all that and you can lose if you don't bring your A game so I think this team is gonna be extra motivated now on Saturday and they'll be ready to play now they didn't have semaj he was he was sick or illness or sometime thing he wasn't able to play did that make a difference I'm he's not starter but he I mean put a 31 the other night yeah did that make a difference do you think I think so yeah he's he's turned into be the supreme backup point guard and so when Frank camp or Cham it said he can go in there and he makes plays and he changes the ballgame he is so ok that's so serious went off on a phone there always listen I don't know why I was listening that's weird please be quiet Siri thank you yeah anyway yeah I don't know what just happened the machines are listening I've got like four echo dots coming oh yeah for Christmas Sarah I should have said that okay so we uh we with semaj not in there what my for would he is such a different type of player and point guard from Landry Shannon and say Connor who can also handle the ball as well I think it throws defenses and that's when you can it's such a change of pace he's so quick and and the other guys are as well but they played differently I and I heard this too if you saw this Landry sham it kind of took control of his team and stood up at halftime of the Baylor game and you know rallied the troops so to speak and that's that that's not a senior leader right there you know that you know but he he is coming into that which was anyway to see here how only is it seeing probably yeah yeah that's true but but yeah so anyway all that to say they they escaped yes and I'll just say one thing on Haynes Jones when he's not able to play you end up having Oscar Reeves and CJ Kaiser as the back of point guards and there are they're very good players they have their roles but they are not as newly as good as a ball carrier as Haynes Jones's and so it's just it's completely different you have their more game managers or more passing guards while Haynes Jones can create plays and just control the offense CJ I think the jury still out on what he's gonna be and what he's gonna develop into he still you know Sonu I don't know enough about his game to see but Austin I like him as a spot-up shooter yeah I don't I don't like him necessarily as a floor general so to speak not to say he can't do that but I think he's more I think he's much better to garden yes and it's just like card you know I think I like him although Connor we see him create a bit more which I like he's developed into a dual threat guy a lot more aggressive lately but yeah I'd love to see a that's good so alright let's let's look ahead you mentioned those big 12 games that are coming up and when you have Oklahoma State coming up I told you the last time I paid attention Oklahoma State was Marcus smart and uh thinking and that's been a while a few years yeah so what do we know about Oklahoma State what can we expect on this game coming up Saturday right Saturday yeah it'll be in Stillwater last year the Cowboys came to Wichita big interest Bank Arena game it was snowing outside it was freezing the walk to the arena we was there after a near blizzard and the shockers got blown out at home yeah which was super rare super disappointing ruined my whole day I'm kind of over it Wood Christmas yeah so this is a chance for revenge for the shockers yeah I think they'll do it the Cowboys were ranked or they were predicted to finish dead last in the big 12 this year but very pleasing stuff yeah I did pre so they're currently about seven and one yes or two something like that they're ranked 49th on Kent palm yeah which is pretty decent it's the last place team of in the big 12 so this will be a challenge for the shockers but it I think it's one they can overcome if they play their best yeah here's the Oklahoma State has played No nobody except Texas A&M ranked number 16 in the nation and they got blown away by yeah so Oklahoma State lost at Texas A&M it was not close and so the one test they've had they failed at it and supported a if it was ranked 16 so shockers ranked number six theoretically you should have no problem then again this is a big 12 team there's you know big 12 talent there so and it's all a game yeah it's on the road never know yeah but I think I think possibly I would say this for sure possibly the reason the shockers maybe had a bit of trouble against South Dakota State was because they knew a revenge game was coming guy Oklahoma State on the road and then Oklahoma as well further down the road but that one's gonna be here Wichita but yeah I I wonder about that so what do you think about this Oklahoma State game your eye it seen it sounds like you're predicting a shockers win I am yes I think the Shockers will win by at least a possibly double digits um and that's all I have to say about that about Oklahoma State that's fine big 12 whatever it'll I being a top 50 top hundred win if the shockers can pull it off and road victories now account for a little more with the new NC double-a selection community standards so it'll be good for them so that being said but anyway so we'll put a poll up as this episode goes live of what is what is the worst part of the Shockers gameday experience okay and I have to preface this by saying it's fun to go 19 cent of it is fantastic yeah it's like there are some areas that need to be there are possibly let me tell you this especially here's my right I love rants I'll go home so especially NC double-a in NFL um I'd rather just watch the game at home and I know that that sounds like I'm not a true fan and maybe so but especially in football you are so far away from the action football yes yes that's once a single day in NFL okay it's either like football yeah I should have said that you are so far away from the action what's the point and then I'm not going to get a replay unless it benefits the home team and they have a guy the intern running the scoreboard figures out how to throw it you know one angle of a replay up on the scoreboard I don't know what's happening when it comes to injuries I don't know the analysis I'm not seeing the stats for football I'd rather just watch it at home because the the expense the the all that for basketball and especially in Koch arena that is still an awesome madness oh yeah that is no bad seat theory though you can be top row I've a lot of my tickets are from friends who have student section or general admission so I'm up by the bantu getting blasted in my ear but it's still fun it's a good time but there are some things that fans have to deal with so what is the worst we've got a list here what's the worst part of a shocker gameday experience is it the parking and and and I'll say this with the parking unless unless you got access unless you're rich or yeah I sense some change your parking at Tyler field or whatever it's called Eck Stadium at the baseball field and you're walking half a mile in the dark and it's freezing cold the winter time whether it's not cystic by the locknut is a long walk so is that the worst and you're dealing with traffic too and and so is that the worst part or is it security what's going on with security yeah I can't say I'm a big fan of the new security I'm kind of a person who doesn't like to be you know I haven't been patted down thankfully but I don't like market email detectors yeah I don't like having to take out all the things in my pockets we jump into a tray like I'm some criminal I had a little not really an incident but two games ago I was walking through you I took out everything in my pockets like I was supposed to and then after it walks through the metal detector the security guy says can you please remove your hat for me and I've never had to remove a hat before through security and so I'm putting this stuff back into my pockets knowing that after I do this I'm gonna take my hat off right what I'm about to take my head off he yells at me to say please can take your half again or something like that raise his voice so I kind of had a nice back-and-forth with him but I ended up taking my hat off but it just kind of put a damper on the next few minutes and so it's just it's a shame that we have to do that in this society I understand why we do it it makes a lot of people feel safe and I get that but it's just I apprenticed the feeling of being safe I wish because I have you know I mean I sneak in I shouldn't sneak in it's not intentional am i I don't I don't like wallets they're too thick the feel I have a money clip and I was a gift I was given a money clip that has a little pocket knife that stands out really cool I like it I've flown on airplanes with that it's not a big deal could I do some damage I suppose maybe but probably not um but I wish and and every time I get through I don't even think that I have it cuz I forget that it's there but I go through and I'm like see that got through what else got through you know so it's perception absolutely so III appreciate the attempts I appreciate there's something and I've mentioned this before what I also don't like about it I go and buy a bottle of water from the concession stand and they take my cap yeah they take the cap off what am I gonna do with a cap and it was apparently a new rule with being in the American and I know a lot of people have griped about that my Felice oh yeah they well INTRUST Bank Arena does this - yes not Jew I'm not just picking on cocaina or anything like that but come on it's like taking your shoes off there was one outlying incident one tie not such a shame what am I gonna put in III just okay anyway but but okay security and all that all that the hassle you gotta go through okay here's we are in first world problems now okay one of my other problem ISM we mentioned when you part you've got to walk so far and part of the problem with walking so far is it's freezing cold in Wichita in the winter especially because the wind I have facial hair exclusively because of the wind I just need protection so what I do of course is when I'm getting ready for a game I figure out okay what color we wearing we all doing are we doing a yellow out are we doing a black out we don't you know what are we doing I put my soccer shirt on and then I get my heaviest winter coat I threw a scarf on I am I grew up in Georgia I I'm not on cold weather person so I've bundle up then I get to the arena and I had you think we're sitting close right now you have this much space in your cell type okay it is tight and I get it and that's part of the atmosphere and that's cool but I take my coat off because I want my shirt and it's warm in there thank you Koch arena for having good atmosphere and heating um what do I do with my coat okay I put it in my seat but then what if I want to sit down so now I'm sitting on my coat or what generally happens is the arms fall down I get beer spilled on him now because you know we got alcohol flowing now through co-created um it does that happen it gets crunch up I what do I do and again firstworldproblems I know but there is no place to put my coat and that's a struggle for me yes you have I have a solution I have a slightly different protective on yes and I love it because it's the cheap seat mentality go go capsule where again my very top row so all that's behind me is a metal wall and then to my right is a big air duct and still well I'm sitting I sit right next to the area deck so I crammed my coat there okay nice of all for training whichever you prefer but all the people to my labs have ingeniously come up with a solution for the coke problem and so the last year or so people have started to bring hooks magnet's magnetic hooks they hang up on this metal wall and they hang up their hook hang up their coats on the wall so that's genius if I'm up here I look to my left I see about 10 to 15 coats but they're hanging up on the wall so is this people who are in the last row with you yeah Oh everyone the last row okay and so my brother and I because we have the our tickets together so we don't we haven't done this yet but what we're thinking about joining this kind of cult and so it's exciting these people just leave their hooks out throughout the whole year and it's little they leave them there it'll get touched know you 1000 hopefully they know now sure secrets a hot secret has been revealed but it's ingenious in at least one row and co-created once all these metallic hooks is that a store that like a Walmart thing well I'm not talking the nards where you go there or is there a guy on the street I don't I start smiling Thursday you want the most I'm gonna hook say magma caps for now there's not gonna bottle gap what if fill your sign Pollard plastic I do have seen Mountain Dew the next time the next time you're at a game go buy a bottle and as they're taking it off you can't you take it from them you pull your own bottle cap out it weighs screw it back on what would happen nothing oh man who's gonna see that run off and you know I mean the concession workers are making minimum wage you like I don't care whatever but oh man sticking it to the man okay and the left the last thing that may be the worst part of game day experience the concessions probably we talked about concessions already the prices okay there are some outrageous prices this is not exclusive to cocaina and i think it's pretty much every reversal if you go to a sporting event outside the Masters Tournament in Augusta Georgia because I grew up there too and they have like you can get a drink for like a buck or two and in a souvenir Cup you keep the cup which is amazing but Koch arena has some outrageous prices now I'm not one to buy concessions but my brother had bought some mozzarella sticks week or two ago $8 you think okay $8 oh you're gonna get you're gonna get a fair amount of mozzarella sticks how many did he get you got four four or mozzarella small normal size much realistic four bucks Wow to me that's not a very good value why some food now with those caps and hooks oh yeah yeah III don't really know what the price for beer is or what are you so you're not you're not on eat the meal at the game kind of guy I you right before I come to the game and then as long as I leave my smart pick up Chipotle oh yeah some people generally what I'm doing what my wife will do is go get a drink if it's anything it's a drink and what I really like to do especially I'll do it like Royals games or Keys games or whatever did you get the big drink that's a souvenir Cup that you get to take home and it Royals games you get to take that cup back and get a refill one free refill I don't know if the shockers do that I'm trying to remember I haven't bought one mr. wrights nice I think they have in the past I'm not sure if they're doing it this year but uh but anyway yeah that's about all I'm gonna get because I know it's a ripoff and it's like when you go to the movies I will I will go I juggle in food into it I have smuggled it like always just to syndicate to them I got a can of root beer or a Mountain Dew or something I wait till it's like the please silence your cell phone it's real quiet and you you know you got a teenage sound to come up yeah um I know I have no problem yeah winter time is the best time ourselves the big pot big heavy coats but yeah and and now I used I love war theaters now it's regal and regal is you know the big souvenir Cup you would give the Royal King that's a small for a regal those cups are massive we slightly changes as a society yeah we have massive that's a good thing just watch Wally and it's that movie all over no anyway so
