Defender and that was Ryan Stewart the middle linebacker couldn't get it off the turf and so the Mustangs have a first down on their first play but then bogg down on their next two plays and AJ Williamson will be in punt Williamson averaging about 39 yards a punt this year five times inside the 20 gets this one off high deep Mustangs able to provide good cover and there's a negative return Todd East West instead of north south that was number nine Nick green the fifth year receiver you think a veteran player you know would want to go a little you know take a step and go he tried to take the long route maybe outrun some Mustangs but Williamson's punt had such great hangtime it allowed the cover team to get down it allowed the cover team to get downfield and in particular The Edge the contain guys on the right side the field side of that punt team did a great job getting up field and cutting them off he had nowhere to go UFT brought a lot of pressure though on that uh that punt return they were looked like they were going for the block so here's Scott Barnett second-year quarterback leading the blues out on first down they're going to pass Barnett looking for pressure steps up Barnett can run takes a big hit he gets the ball out to about the 35 it's a gain of about eight yards on the play so Barnett started the season as the backup kinale philli was the starter he was last year's starter but it was a couple of games ago that they were not happy with their quarterback play Barnett has been the starter since then had a good game although against maybe not your most quality opponent in York last week but for a Young quarterback got very comfortable got confident and regardless right now he's a number two rusher on the UFT team with 142 yards on the season and not playing the whole season that's pretty impressive so far and we saw it there so second and short Adam Williams is the Deep back taking the handoff looking for room up the middle and it looks like the pile is going to be close in fact I probably have the first down right at about the 42 yd line yeah they just had a little dive inside inside Zone they had not too much room to move there Western's defensive tackles did a good job swallowing up the running back on that play limiting the gain one of the areas of concern for the Mustang defense has to be their pressure on Pass Downs that Mustangs only have five sacks on the season although they have 10 interceptions the back end is doing a great job need to get a little more pressure on the quarterback first and 10 Williams on the handoff again trying to go up the middle not much there maybe two yards as the ball is just shy of the 40 yep another inside Zone play with a little hack block from the HB or the the fullback in the back field but again Western's defense was was there sitting ready and the defensive line did a great job stuffing it up up they're just canceling the gaps and forcing UFT to have to move those big bodies and that play they did not do a good job doing it here they have a 4X one formation so I suspected they're going to pass the ball here so going in motion Williams back into the back field Barnett back to pass looking to go down the middle has his receiver over throws an interception beautiful interception nice interception that ball was intended for number 13 Jake oen but the ball was well thrown over his head he did not have a chance to get it and the Western defensive back was sitting in the zone behind him waiting for that pass so great play by jusinski and it wasn't an easy catch either he was uh he made a bit of an acrobatic catch to get that over kind of hands behind him over the shoulder but was able to come down with it and maintain possession once he hit the turf so on the first turnover of the game the Mustangs will take over on their own four 49 yd line offset to the left Keon Edwards back to pass there's Mo Jamal is it a catch he's gonna rule no catch so HCK had Jamal MOS and Jamal just couldn't bring it in the referee ruled that he did not have any control of it so not a fumble just an incompletion so second down and 10 HCK was just trying to lead that ball into the field side and allow him to run underneath it but uh he just wasn't able to get his fingers long enough to grab that ball and bring it in little bit of happy feed for HCK on that play yeah he didn't quite run into it as much as he normally does so Edwards offset to the right receivers Go In Motion The Big Field is to his right steps back and there's masseri on the 10 yard out gets 10 yards exactly and it's going to be a first down for the Mustangs very similar pass to what they ran the first play of the game just that uh corner on the boundary side number six is off just a little far and so we had that uh receiver had the depth advantage and they just threw that quick out on him Josh Carter the defensive back giving braad masseri little bit of room to start this game off so three receivers to the short side for Evan HCK he's going back MOS and Jamal ball behind him and Jamal couldn't pick it up not sure if he lost it in the lights didn't have great hand position as well that time yeah it was just sort of over the back shoulder a little bit hilock just slings it in there and it doesn't give you a lot of time to uh sort of adjust for those balls cuz hilock throws it so hard and you know as he was coming under it was at that back shoulder he could not adjust so another Miss so Jamal to the right Seth Robertson inside him Savon magn Jones off to the left and then just a little dump off Keon Edwards on the screen pass has to make one man miss and he's taken down after a gain of five he'll be at the blues 45 yd line but it's going to be third down and the Mustangs are going to be in a punt situation at the end end of a quarter or probably pardon me end of a half or game you may see Brian G kind of stretch outside of his comfort zone as longest of the year it's a 48 yard field goal this is a 52 yard attempt however it's a moot point as AJ Williamson is in the punt so green the lone Return Man Williamson has trouble getting it off the deck however hangs it up short to the 12 green looking to dance around green has some room takes a big hit and green is down at the 21 so AJ Williamson had a little trouble had a little trouble getting that one onto the onto his hands but under not much pressure was able to get it off and the blues will start great teams are built with the help of great supporters you can help our players achieve their best on and off the field with a donation to The adopt a Mustang football program for more information visit Western mustangs.car 930 left in the first quarter Toronto with their second possession ball on the 21 yd line Barnett back to pass High deflected a dub should have brought it in and an interception and Barnett is a little off Target early yeah that was another high pass it just those balls are just getting uh well out of the reach of the receivers it's like Barnett's trying to get it over that line and and in doing so he's not able to get the ball down to the receiver where he is but uh he's got to be careful with that he's got guys sitting beside behind them you talked about the field being a little greasy the footballs at the beginning of the game always have that sheen on them as well doesn't looks like they need to be worked in a bit second and 10 Barnett play action back to pass looking to go over the top good coverage Again by the Mustangs everyone had a blanket over them and the Mustangs force a two and out I think the UFT coaching staff is just going to have to take Barnett and just say hey settle down a little bit you know because he's just get he seems like he's a little tight in there a little nervous he's slinging the ball but just a little bit over over the target each time settle down let's get under control you've got a through throw thros out of you let's try and reel this in so kabango bra masseri back Sam hany flag on the play low punt wobbler there's masseri at his 45 masseri going north south dances through maseri to the 40 slips down there's a flag on the play so depending on which team it is on if it is on the Mustangs Toronto would gladly reick that effort yeah I if it's on Toronto might side by the Mustangs because they were bringing a little bit of pressure off of The Edge and uh I'm not sure if he got into that to that one yard neutral zone or if the UFT player coming up to block and maybe got a little too far over the line we're not have to wait and see here so it looks like it's offside on the Mustangs so it's a 5-yard penalty it's not going to result in a first down obviously behind as it was second and 10 but it's a re kick for hanky and the Mustangs had great field position at the 40 yeah they'll definitely reick that ball on an inconsequential really right offside if it was holding you'd be like wellow they wouldn't have got that far but the offside did not affect the play at all so here's hanky again for take number two wobbler again masseri takes it at his 48 dances once dances twice and masseri Powers his way across Midfield and he's down so Braden masseri gets over the 50 and it looks like they'll start at the 49 yd line best field position for the Mustangs on their third possession 8/19 to play still scoreless and the Mustangs will start this drive in Varsity Blues territory Meri did a great job hanging on to that ball because the UFT Defender number 54 Cam Gang a former Bronco I might tell you was working hard to rip that ball out of his arms miseri hung on for dear life good fundamental coaching you can you can see that clearly kid clearly so keano yasbeck will see his first action in the back Field tonight yasbeck play action down the middle and there's Seth Robertson on the slant pattern from the slot back and Hil connects and it's a gain of 13 yards and it's a first down yeah great run like you said a nice slant route there they just got underneath the uh the safeties and behind the defensive or the linebackers and into that second Zone we have a replay now here good job squeezing the ball because he knew he was going to get hit by the safety as soon as he caught it so well done so Robertson taking a knee on this play one of the things I know it's going back a thousand years but one of the characteristics when we played Toronto always a hard-hitting team yeah they always have had even know they've had different head coaches and different cultures one of the things about Toronto has always been that they've been a hard-hitting program I remember mid when you and I played mid mid the late 90s that was a program before it kind of fell off the cliff and it's nice to see they're back in respectable territory if I can be be honest about I was walking the sideline tonight getting down to see UFT warm up a little bit and I was actually taken by the size of their athletes they were bigger and and much more athletic looking than I was expecting um you know just because they're not doing well in the standings doesn't mean they have athletic guys but they were some some good-looking athletes there so it's you know no doubt that they can hit hard they're delivering here tonight and their linebackers in particular do a great job wrapping up driving and uh and stuffing plays one of the things you may notice on the UFT roster how many players they have not just from out of Province but specifically from British columb I there are 13 or 14 players on this roster of what what do we have now 48 guys on yeah I think UFT being one of the top quality schools in the country just attract a lot of athletes from all over the country so first and 10 for the Mustangs yasbeck off to the left play action hilock back to pass has time in the flats there's Savon magn Jones with a just off his fingertips Savon mag Jones almost made a spectacular catch but Evan HCK and he could not connect it's going to be second down and 10 and here you can see the replay very patient by HCK waiting for that route to develop he came across the formation dragged all the way across through the zone and hit it on the other side of him but he just couldn't hang on to it second and 10 Mustangs approach there's a flag on the play HCK takes the shot outside Jamal brings it in but there's a flag on the play it's going to be offside against the Varsity Blues the hard count and the motion towards the line looks like it enticed them so it'll be second down and five a lot more plays in the uh book at that opens the book up a little bit so Hill gets a call from the sideline maseri is wide left inside of him is Seth Robertson Savon magn Jones isolated to the right is mosson Jamal and the lone back is Keo yasb Toronto bringing pressure HCK Under Pressure steps up in the pocket slips can't get his footing it looks like he was on roller skates there and he's going to go down at the 38 yeah you could tell he was looking for somebody and they UFT must have been in a man defense manto man defense because what he was looking for was not there it was not developing then he got Happy Feet and like you said again he slipped on the turf he could not get out of the pocket to go and UFT was able to make the tackle for a loss so Brian G 12 of 17 so far this year on field goal attempts his longest is 48 he's perfect from extra points however this is sizeably longer than extra point this is a 45 yard attempt Seth Robertson is going to be the holder and the t is right on the right hash of the 45 yd line 638 to play snap his back hold is down kick is up G has enough and it hits the goal poost and goes over I was a little early on has enough that was a that was a great kick great leg you know and you always worry as a kicker when the field Turf gets a little bit slick whether or not you're going to plant as hard and and get that leg swing quite as hard but just enough that should almost be worth four points if he called the bar maybe we give it to him as our statistician Jake Williams points out technically it was just enough so the Mustangs with their first point of the game three nothing 630 to play in this first quarter and Toronto will take over on their 35 yd line Scott Barnett with zero completions and one interception needs to settle down to keep the Blues in this game back to pass Barnett Under Pressure looking to go over the top has his receiver just beyond the reach nicely thrown ball and that was Nigel L good fourthe receiver but had a lot of room on the sidelines just took him a little long and it's going to be second and 10 yeah Nigel look good is their number one receiver for the team this year with with only5 yards mind you but he is the number one and had he just kept running underneath that ball I think he would had just enough extra acceleration and speed to run underneath it but he held his hands out a little too long slows him down a little bit and you lose in the light probably at night time so just comes up short so double tight formation just three receivers going out in the pattern Barnett looking to drop it in the hole it's high oh almost intercepted Callum jinsky almost had his second so just over the head of the receiver and in front of the DB only three on the pattern only two on this side of the field Toronto really looking to protect Barnett keeping double tight end yeah and I think Western's DBS are just going to start sort of hanging behind the receivers a little bit cuz the way Barnett's throwing it over their head they're just going to sit there for a free gift at some point so here's hanky in for his second punt takes his time again wobbler there's kabango at his 38 yd line gets up field quickly gets to the 49 so with 533 to play in this first quarter Western leads Toronto 3 nothing and you're listening to Mustangs football on oua TV are Bor where records are broken where great plays are made where school colors ignite passion where Champions Prevail where tradition is celebrated Ontario University Athletics welcome back Evan HCK back to pass on first down oh M Jamal makes a great catch so Jamal with the Deep hook right past the Mustangs logo and the and Western back in UFT territory on that first down reception so first and 10 so nice run on that first down play Keon Edwards able to get outside down to the 28 yd line and it'll be a first down Mustangs as this drive continues yeah that was a great run by uh Keon Edwards he gets the ball on a bit of a out outside Zone and cuts it back he makes a nice little straight arm and a and a spin to pick up a few extra yards and put a little bit more in that first down so quick hitter there's Savon magnet Jones on the catch just sat down nicely in the zone saw the soft spot and HCK beautiful little touch there so first down for the Mustangs as are inside the Red Zone ball on the left hash on the 13 yd line yeah that's slot back was wide open in the seam nobody was on him looks like his guy was in a bit of a cut coverage over top and he was left alone so good find by hillock yasbeck offset to the left receivers approach the line HCK back to pass there's he's got Savon magnet Jones again Savon makes one man miss and then hauled down about the seven yd line let's make it six on the first down pass it'll be second down and four 345 to play so Savon just sits down nicely taught in that zone makes the first man miss and hard extra yard there yeah nice job by Ryan Collins though on the tackle because he was in the open field had he spun away he was in for six points and a touchdown so great job wrapping him up slowing up enough for his teammates to come in and finish the tackle so yasbeck offset to the left receivers go in motion for the Mustangs back to passes HCK looking for the outside drops it over the top caught touchdown M Jamal great pass great catch that defensive back was in great coverage on that receiver and HCK just put a dime right into his hands over the shoulder right at the back of the end zone you can't cover any better than that but you can't throw and catch any better than that either mson Jamal nice catch he was fighting the ball earli in this game and it's nice to see him haul this one in nice move to the outside and we watch HCK just drop it in the bucket yeah number six was in great position I mean that ball was just placed perfectly the only thing number six could have done better was turned around at the last second to try and SWAT that down but that's a tough call so G with his 31st consecutive extra point and the Mustangs now build their lead 10 nothing it's his 17th TouchDown for Evan hilik this year against just one interception the Mustangs uh prior to this drive I know we had a couple of runs there but were out of 10 plays nine were passes I'm thinking back on that drive there was only one running play perhaps so we're about 13 of 15 so here's Brian G's gonna Tee It Up well last week at this time UFT was up 10 to nothing on York so the tables have been reversed here a little bit Western up 10 nothing on UFT in the first quarter so Garrett Ellis and Nick green are the returners G low driving kick oh does a good job Ellis does a good job to block that and he gets it out to the 25 that was a good play It's almost like a catcher Todd blocking a wild did a good job because if he doesn't hit it square that ball skips off him and and goes any direction well it could skip off him going to the end zone or it could skip out and bounce off of and bounce forward into the uh ensuing Western Mustang Rush coming down field so yeah that was a great job good concentration and that ball like you said is getting a little slippery on that Turf as the ball and the turf start to get a little dewy so University of Toronto with three minutes to play Scott Barnett needs to settle down Williams is the Deep back taking the hand off looking for room up front they're able to move the pile maybe three yards second and seven approaches well then you know what good job by by the running back there he sort of scatting around a little bit in the back field trying to find the lane in that inside Zone play cuz Western had it plugged up pretty good but he was able to jump over a gap and get a few extra yards in the opposing Gap there it is there but the Western defensive tackle just not letting him get any further than three yards down field so let's give him four yards it'll be second down and six receivers Go In Motion three to the right side Barnett out wide has his receiver oh he's going to be taken down nice tackle Jake o was the receiver but he's ridden down almost immediately two yards short of the first down and so decision time nice play by Jackson Finley great play by Jackson Finley I was about to say he came from the defensive backfield from the safety position screaming downfield in man coverage to cover that in the flat that's not an easy uh route to cover because he's got to come downhill and outside but he was full bore and full speed and when he caught that ball the receiver for UFT had nowhere to go when he turned up field so masseri is the lone returner just under two minutes to play in this first quarter Western leads 10 nothing let's see if the Mustangs bring a little pressure can't go offside on this attempt as they only need two yards for the first down Hanky the punter from Tennessee gets his better kickoff sends masseri back to about the 31 yd line secures the catch misseri goes north south takes a big hit bounces off the U tackler nice return by braad masseri as he gets out to the 43 yd line that's about a 13 yard return yeah he paid for every yard of that return he ended up getting run into by Will meloff driver the fullback tight end for the UFT Blues but boom was able to spin off of him and keep going for a few more yards so good job on uh on recollecting himself and driving it up field so Evan HCK in for this fifth drive already for the Mustangs HCK eight of 12 79 yards with one touchdown the Mustangs have run 16 plays and 13 have been passes in a team that generally you think of as a run first football club receivers Go In Motion HCK back to pass again looks to the sidelines o miscommunication there meseri came in HCK threw it out and it's second down and 10 coming up yeah that was on number six Josh Carter the boundary Corner again they you know they were going for that route for the third time but this time uh uh Josh Carter was sitting there waiting for that so they were lucky that that ball was thrown a little short because uh number six was there and ready to jump it second down three receivers to the wide field they go in motion for HCK back to pass looks like they're setting up a screen key Keon Edwards with the reception Keon Edwards has room taken out of bounds but it looks like he's got the first down as he hits the marker and the Mustangs are just a football shy of Midfield nice play call and nice EX execution on this screen yeah that's a great job on that screen and I mean when that when number five Keon Edwards for Weston gets out in the open he's tough to take down but number three Luca pante for UFT just came across and gave him a good pop when his partner had him wrapped up so good for him he was the leading defensive player in the oua last week and a great job making that hit on him so HCK going deep a little short can't come up with it Mo Jamal and so HCK just couldn't get everything behind it given his elbow a little bit of adjustment there trying to massage a little life into it looks like Jamal had a step but HCK just couldn't get everything under it HCK really Zips that ball he's like a like a major league baseball pitcher when he slings it he slings it hard that puts a lot of pressure on that elbow and that elbow is giving him a hard time all season second and 10 coming down to 30 seconds left in this first quarter ball right at Midfield left hash two receivers to the left two to the right for Evan HCK play action quickly to the outside there's meseri on the screen has blockers in front oh and Savon magn Jones is going to be not happy had a pretty good block but it was his player who tripped up raid meseri looks like the offensive lineman were able to get out there as well Todd yeah that was a little alley sh uh Aly screen and he caught that ball and he had room to go that the offensive lineman for Western were in great position and had some stuff cleared out but uh number 19 Ryan Collins was able to just sneak underneath the block by the receiver and get the ankles for a tackle so third down Mustangs have converted 10 of 14 this year HCK back to pass rolling out to his right needs some help there's a hold on the play and it's incomplete and so U looks like they forced the turnover on Downs so let's just see what the flag is I got to think it's a hold on it looks like it is a hold and that's going to be the final play of the first quarter Western leades univ Toronto 10 nothing and you're watching Mustangs football on oua TV listen listen you're more than your successes you're more than your failures everything you got you got this you're the work all right it's dirty work work that hurts work that defies you it's that fire that burns inside you be you it's always been you you're the work you n you want that smoke give him that body [Music] [Applause] welcome back to Western Alumni Stadium it's the Mustangs and the Toronto Varsity Blues for tonight Saturday night oua action Western with a 10 nothing first quarter lead it was Brian G from 45 yards and no more for the opening points on a field goal and then it was moson Jamal from seven yards out with the touchdown completion from Evan HCK and those are the Mustang points Toronto has struggled to move the ball Scott Barnett the quarterback not having the same success as he did last week against York handed the ball off right up the middle it's going to be a gain of three yards on the play that looked like Garett Ellis seconde running back on the carry give them three and it's second and seven coming up all of uf's runs so far have come off the same play just inside Zone most of the time with a hack block on the backside defensive end and they've been getting P pretty much three yards a pop every time they run it so it's been a little bit of a consistent package run for them and you know as a first down play not a bad one for UFT against Western's defense so second and seven receivers Go In Motion Barnett back to pass and the Mustangs bringing heat and it well timed it's caught on the sidelines turns around makes one man miss down in the middle makes a second man miss and it's green looking for the End Zone Cuts back and he's down to the five Nick green the fifth year receiver on a nice catch and run play gets it down to the five yard line UFT good job picking up the pressure on that Blitz Nick green at 5 foot n 175 pounds I don't think he believed he had that ball once he caught it and the defensive back wasn't there but he just got those little legs going kind of runs like a guy we used to play with Tommy little guy named Anthony Lane Anthony Lane but a great pickup a little momentum for UFT down to the 5 yard line and I think the sideline will be very excited about that last play for a team that really did nothing in the first quarter huge play to open up the second 15 minutes Williams is the Deep back Barnett has receivers in motion double tight formation Under Pressure Barnett escapes dumps it off high and it's incomplete good job by carnett to avoid the sack and it's going to be second and goal from the five well a great job avoiding the sack getting away and then getting the ball off before getting sacked almost getting sacked a second time and was able to get the ball over the line of scrimmage not take a penalty incomplete pass ball stays where it is second and five I think they'll take that under the circumstances better than a five yard loss so following the 54 yd pass and run to Nick green it is second and goal from the five Williams in motion Barnett keeps it himself Barnett looking for the end zone is he in he's in he's in touchdown Adam Barnett from five yards out and the blues have their first touchdown of the game I'm not sure if that was a well-designed play or a bit of a lucky play because it looked like the UFT receivers were scrambling around motioning everywhere I think it was a lot of smoking mirrors for the quarterback just to take the ball on a draw and sneak it over the line by an inch we'll chalk it up as a genius play but I think there was a bit of uh disorganization in the back field there and they were able to benefit so here's hanky for the extra point snap is down kick is good and Toronto cuts the Western lead to three points so nice catch and run really excited the University of Toronto Blues I mean when you look at at the first quarter Todd they had a net of just 17 yards on four possessions and then it was a 54 yard catch from Barnett to Green getting it down to the 5 yard line and Toronto's back in this game yeah and to your point at the beginning of the game you know whether or not uh Western was going to come out running or passing well they came out passing hilock 10 for 17 110 11 10 yards almost on in the first quarter in passing alone no wonder he's holding his elbow but that's not what we expect to see from the Western offense we thought we would see much more rushing yards 21 rushing yards by Keon Edwards on Two Carries is not the customary offense that Western would put on the field especially against UFT so kabango is going to take this return up at about the 10 looking for room around one around two there's going to be a flag on the play probably a hold coming back but Daniel kabango with a nice aggressive return again gets it to the 32 yd line but there's laundry on the field and credit UFT they're uh they're special teams work hard they get downfield they cover the ball well and uh other than you know a few yards there which might have got sprung with that hold they uh they're doing a good job tackling the ball the ball carrier for a very little gain so following the holding call ball is going to be placed back near the soccer penalty spot and it's going to be first down for the Mustangs on their 18 yd line so a little bit of momentum for UFT UF has a big gain a touchdown and now a beneficial flag that pins you uh Western back on the 13 yd line so a little momentum for UFT here let's hope Western can turn this around and get something going so we're starting position for the Mustangs on their own 13 yd line there's yasbeck on the handoff dances through the hole plunges over the 20 Mak it a gain of seven yards on a nice run up the middle by keano yasbeck yeah a little bit of dancing an inside Zone play hopping from uh Gap to Gap till he finds the one that he likes in his open and he's able to pick up a few extra yards eight yards so second and let's make it two referee giving him a little more credit than I was Craig Coleman is the upback receivers Go In Motion yasbeck again on the carry finds a crease and he's over the 25 down to the 27 first down Western and they're out from the shadow of their goal post yeah nice little run by uh yasbeck basically runs it off the back end of his uh H his fullback coming across the formation and blocking the backside defensive end and there's enough of a gap there that he's able to squeak up for the first down and then some so Jamal back in the game he's got Seth Robertson inside of him misseri is wide to the left and there's a flag on the play is it a delay game not quite sure was it too many men in the ah too many men yeah so 13 men in the formation for the Mustangs miscommunication as to what personnel package should be out there well and they had a late athlete running off the field as well they had 14 on the field at one point so definitely a bit of Mis miscommunication there in packaging so first and 15 ball's in the middle of the field on the 22 yd line yasbeck Remains The Deep back receivers Go In Motion Robertson comes across formation yasbeck stutter spins and yzc gets down to about the 28 29 yd line nice gain on the first down however with the penalty it'll still make it second down and about eight nice spin move by yasbeck yeah nice job that time that was a yak where the wide receiver comes across kicks the defensive end on the backside and again able to follow up off of him bit of a larger Lane that time so second down quickly the outside there's Savon magnet Jones on the little bit of the flat pass and he gets a first down and UF will be picking up a uh late hit on the quarterback on that play but nice little ball he slings it sidearm around the backside of the defensive end to get out to the flat there and he's able to hit the receiver who picks up the first down so with the reception magn Jones gets it to the 40 yard line and he's going to say unnecessary roughness roughing the passer 15 yds is going to be tacked on and the Mustangs will have the ball now out at Midfield so a drive that started at their 13 yd line gets out to Midfield so nice response by the Mustangs following that UFT touchdown now what they have to do is get some points ideally a touchdown half the field down half the field to go HCK back to pass no handing it off there's Edwards getting aead of steam go and he's got eight yards as he's tackled at the 47 yd line nice run by Keon Edwards yeah they're starting to get the Run game going now you know the first quarter you soften them up a little bit by throwing the ball down field and you kind of pull your you know empty your box lighten your box up a little bit but I think they're just trying to protect H's arm a little bit now because his arm is getting sore his elbows clearly in distress so let's keep the ball on the ground now second and short receivers Go In Motion Edwards again on the handoff oh not touched until he's well through into the secondary one of the challenges Todd I'm looking at for UFT is only dressing six defense alignment and you know we've seen this commonly throughout this season the Mustangs have an ability to wear teams down yeah you definitely want to have some bodies in there that you can rotate your defensive line in and out and keep them fresh and you're you're you're you know you're you're wrestling on the in the trenches every single play so having that short of a bench in the defensive line area could definitely be a detri to U so he has back oh U Reddit that time on the first down play loss of two great work by the defense Al line that was Jeremy Sinclair who looked to be leading the tacklers and it's going to be second down and 13 as the balls move back to the 35 yard line yeah great job getting through on that backside and no one was there to pick him up and he was free just waiting for the ball carry to run into his arms which uh he was happy to oblige a big hug on the running back so three receivers to HCK wide side that's his left Boston Jamal isolated to the right yasbeck is the lone back play action HCK back to pass escapes under the pressure rolls out to his left turns up field HCK has a little room to run there's going to be a hold on the play slides down he's got a first down but it looks like it's going to come back with a hold against the Mustang offensive line definitely a hold the defensive tackle was peeling off to try and tackle and flatten off to get HCK before he got around to the edge and the tackle just held on enough that allowed HCK to run but you can't do that and so that hold's going to get called the ball's going to come back with an additional few yards tacked on so the Mustangs who had a first down and were driving up to the 32 yd line have had a loss of on tackle tackle for loss of minus three now a penalty they're going backwards here and not many our plays are drawn up at second and 22 23 officially so HCK three receivers to his left again Jamal isolated to the right Ki yasbeck is the lone back HCK looks over the D Toronto just rushing four yasbeck on the draw yasbeck has a little time but not much there good job by UFT to bottle him up thought he had uh little Zone to the outside he could have got two however it's going to be only a gain of two on the play yeah he spent a little too much time daning to try and find the the seam to cut it up field and the UFT defense was able to sort of pursue and close in on the ypc to wrap him up for the tackle so while the Mustangs are not in a scoring position they did well it's a 50-yard drive to get it into UFT territory now it's AJ Williamson back to punt and the Mustangs are hoping to pin UFT deep in their end Under Pressure Williamson though gets it off nice high kick down to the end zone there's green fumbles it in the end zone picks it up and he's going to be knocked out of bounds so it's going to be a single point and the Mustangs will now need lead 117 however UFT will scrimmage the ball ultimately Williamson Tod overhit that yeah that you want the ball to drop exactly at about the one yard line or out of bounds as close to the end zone as possible that time by driving the defender uh the receiver back into the end zone they'll concede the single point and Toronto will happily exchange that for 35 yards of real estate that was a booming kick it was so far that the returner Antonio con was not able to track that when it gets that high two in these lights at night it's tough to track sometimes it comes down it comes down all of a sudden and you see it and it's too late luckily once he bobbled the ball he was able to receive it otherwise Western could have been down there and worst things could have happened one point's not the end of the world after that play So double tight formation two receivers to the right Barnett back to pass looking to roll outside feeling the pressure dumps it off high over Williams who just kind of leaked out of the back field and it's going to be second down and 10 yeah at that point I think they were glad just for an incomplete pass and just get it over the head of the receiver so that ball couldn't be caught otherwise had he caught it it still would have been a tackle for a loss so incomplete pass 10 yards second and 10 when you're looking at the Mustang Edge rushers right but I mean that time we saw Barnett kind of get outside should should would you be telling Focus you got to contain Barnett like make sure he's not able to get around you because he's dangerous with his leg so far this year yeah that's a good rule of thumb for defensive ends altogether is to ensure that you keep him in the pocket not let him rush because especially to the field side that gives him lots of time to to run and throw flag on the play on this one wow kind of surprised that there's a flag on the play pass interference by the looks of looks like it is and so it was Nigel a good second time they've run that corner pattern nice Arc by Barnett so it's going to be pass interference I thought it was contact right at the end of the play yeah the DB had great position on the receiver it'd be interesting to see the replay on that because he must have been draped over the shoulder just enough to have contact and interfere with the uh with the throw so 15 yards on the penalty Toronto gets the ball on their 50 yd line and so Williams remains as the lone back Scott Barnett three receivers to his right two to his left no tight ends in this formation empty backfield Barnett looking back to pass going over the top has his receiver down the sidelines great defensive work to block that beautiful job as they were looking that was great for Thomas Roberts down the sideline with only one reception so far this year nice route by Roberts on the wheel well they set that up nicely too they had three receivers to that side of the field and two of them hooked up so that would draw the eyes of the DBS and they sent one clear down the field that was a well thrown ball well placed great position but the defensive back was just in the perfect spot and enough that he was able to deflect that ball away from the receiver otherwise that would have been a six-point touchdown Chris Cameron coogler cckk as they call him yeah had he caught that in stride it was gone so timeout called on the field by the blues not sure if they were running out of time or just wanted to give some of their personnel of break second down and 10 coming up next week the Mustangs host Lauer I was going to say Battle of the undefeateds however this game has to be determined let's take a look at a replay on the last throw from Barnett watch Roberts just kind of get outside release down the sidelines and then Cameron kogler just got his hand right between the receiver's hands almost textbook how to defend when it's over your shoulder that's a tough uh ball to covers or route to cover the the number one and number three receiver hooking up and then the number two receiver runs a wheel to sort of a fade route on the sideline that that's tough to cover that was a great defensive play by Western so second and 10 ball on their 50 yard line Western leads Toronto with 620 to play in the first half 117 Adam Williams is the lone back four receivers to the right for Barnett who's not afraid to run back to pass steps up oh he's Mets and there's going to be flag on the play so let's see what the flags are might be holding not sure looks like the flags came out ahead of the quarterback sack and the Mustangs haven't been able to get to many quarterbacks this year if that is the sack that is just their sixth sack of the year yeah they've definitely been deficient in that category this season and if you're going to go deep in the playoffs you definitely want to have your defensive line in a position to be pressuring quarterbacks and forcing them to do things they don't want to do at that time the UFT quarterback stepped up in the pocket and thought he was going to be able to get out and they had a western Mustang Defenders right in the lane and they met the way quarterbacks don't like to meet with a bear hug who's the Western football player on the field here Tommy so the sack is a loss of 10 yards it'll be third down can't quite see with the all black dark numbers who the player on the ground is so let's just see if our camera team could pick it up there's all right so maseri and Kabongo are the return men there's lovely JW on the screen that's that's sain hmid sain hmid one of the defensive ends interesting fact uh for this season is that the UFT defense and the UFT or sorry the Western defenses are very similar in their statistics in terms of the number of sacks and interceptions that each have so here's hanky back to punt Ball's going to be scrimmage from the 40 yard line Toronto is not in any sort of rush to get this off it seems maseri kabango back hanky best kick of the night gets it out on the 30 there's masseri looking for a crease up the middle and Brad masseri gets out to the 40 make it the 41 yd line so again another nice north south run by Braden masseri as a secures this catch 546 to play in this first half Western leads Toronto 117 and you're watching Mustang football on oua TV [Music] welcome back to Haler sodc Memorial Field at Western Alumni Stadium where the Mustangs lead the University of Toronto Blues 117 in a game that is being tightly contested Mustangs have gone almost exclusively to their are attack first down HCK back to pass he's got mag Jones in the slot makes the catch gain of 12 on the play and the sticks will move again the UFT Defenders gave magnet Jones a lot of room there there's one of the receivers for Weston you want to respect and then doing so they gave a big cushion there enough room for him to catch that hitch actually that hook sorry and get the first down so magn Jones goes in motion to The Far Side just Jamal isolated to the right Edwards on the handoff not much of room up front can't make the first man miss maybe a gain of one on the play it's going to be second and long nice job by Tucker Burke number 90 for UFT grabbing Edwards before he's able to knife up field hang on to him bear hug him and wait for his buddies to come and make tackle make it a long one or a short two balls right at the Midfield stripe right in the middle of the Mustangs logo three receivers to the right for Evan HCK Craig Coleman is the blocking back to the left Toronto showing pressure picked up nicely HCK slings it to the sidelines Jamal makes one man miss accelerates down the sideline oh he's going to be close let's see where they mark it he's got it at the 408 perhaps looks like he's about one yard short so nice play by Jamal after he caught it put the brakes on slips under the defender accelerates down the sideline and just comes up one yard short Mustangs going for it again on third down they're 0 for one this game Edwards is the lone back Edwards with the handoff puts his head down oh and I'm not sure he got it little bit slow developing play there and I think University of Toronto has stopped him again on a third down play not much pushup front Todd and it just kind of seemed like Edwards jumped a little bit early like something would might have been in his way and oh he got tripped up by the defender the defensive lineman was able to get into the back field there I think it was number four 58 looks like Jackson Mayor the Saunders product was able to break up the play from the ground oh number 98 yeah yes so 98 Jackson Mayer fifth year player out of Saunders here in London doing a little damage to his hometown team so University of Toronto forces the second turnover on Downs take over on their 48 yd line receivers Go In Motion nice catch so down to the 35 nice pass and run that was Christopher Joseph the first year receiver that's his 11th catch of the season and it was a nice pass Scott Bar N had all sorts of time back yeah and those are the balls that they've been trying to complete all even evening unfortunately most of the first quarter those balls were over the heads or the hands of the receiver that time they were able to get it in there in the zone make the catch and get a great gain looks like Barnett is settled down passing game has been terrific in the second quarter so three receivers Go In Motion Barnett back to pass quickly has a receiver in the slot there's leg good on the catch gain of about eight on the play and so it's going to be second down and short Nigel look good fourthe receiver with the reception ah make it close to nine so second and short three minutes to play in this first half Western leads 117 but UFT driving with the ball at the 26 I think if Weston's going to give him continue to give him a Zone look and the defense uh they're going to continue to try and throw it around there now that he's settled in and he's making better completions that's seems to be working and effective as we get closer to the Red Zone probably going to start seeing more of a man coverage so that might uh eliminate those gains so receivers Go In Motion from right to left Williams is the lone back taking the hand off Williams nothing up front and so Williams is dropped for a loss so it looks like Lawrence Bowers Kane was able to shoot the Gap that time and it's going to be a loss of one on the play almost two so Bowers Kane gets right into his legs and makes a nice play so hanky on for the field goal attempt he's five of six this year as long as is 31 this will be a 35 yard attempt Western's going to have confusion on special teams so they'll take a timeout however with just 238 to play you'd like to save it for offense but this is a time where you need to take a time out you cannot have too many men on the field here no you don't want to give a penalty in this uh in this range looks like Ryan Bartholome the fourthe DB out of Brisbane Australia was supposed to be on the field there was a bit of confusion so they have to burn a timeout but better to get it right than get it wrong and give up a first down and uh another opportunity for UFT to collect seven points before the end of the half so kabango is deep hanky two yards in from the right hash from 35 his long for the season 31 snap is back hold is down kick is up and it is good so the lead now one point as Toronto has 10 on the board to Western's 11 and the ball will come out for the Mustangs at the 35 yd line Toronto which was ineffective on offense in the first quarter Todd we've seen Scott Barnett really settle down in the second quarter even though they only were able to get a field goal there Barnett has really uh been able to you know exploit the Western defense at times yeah it's almost as if he was nervous in the first quarter and tight and just not able to get the ball where he wanted to go and now he seems to like said be settling in the ball's getting where he wants to go Wesson's running a bit of a soft zone defense and he's finding his receivers it's it's good pass catch football so for the eighth possession the Mustangs quick hit to the outside Jamal on the catch and he's taken down they've gone back to that quick out numerous times make it a gain of four yards on the play it'll be second down and six with the scrimmage line the 39 that was a close one uh linebacker number 44 Jeremy Sinclair almost able to get a hand up there and knock that ball down but uh H's been done a great job with that sidearm tonight like to your point getting it out there to the flat and just missing some defenders in the process so coming up to 220 to play HCK play action has time in the pocket down the middle he's got Robertson on the catch and Robertson to the 50 to the 45 and is there going to be a horse caller tackle no they're not thought the defender had a grasp around his CER but they're not going to call it first down Mustangs though as they get the ball to the 45 so HCK on the cross he able to get it nope actually good tackle he had him on the Jersey just on the right shoulder blade so first and 10 receivers in motion h back to pass has time out to the flats oh and yasbeck can't come up to it so really trying to exploit in the flats this time the Mustangs there's the second time this time it was instead of a receiver who was a running back it was larouche aafu who made the defensive play and it's be second and 10 yeah and sometimes you just try and set something up with all these short passes you get the defensive back sort of uh inching up closer and closer to try and take those away and then you can possibly hit something over the top if you allow them to sleep second and 10 play action HCK rolls out to his right now back to his left trying to St his feet stops up and then throws it down nice catch by Keon Edwards to the 20 to the 15 nice offs script play by both HCK and Edwards playing a little pickup Sandlot football there and the ball's going to be placed at the 13 yd line yeah you're not drawing that one up that was a broken play for sure and Western's offensive line did a great job continuing to find work and make blocks just long enough for HCK to get some space yet a a UFT Defender draped over him as he just slung it out there to the open receiver who got left during the scramble wide open first down on the 13 HCK free play free play into the end zone and it's going to be knocked down so it looks like it was offside by UFT they're advocating that Western however flinched but they're going to say that it was University of Toronto who encroached on that one yard zone so that's the second time University of Toronto has been caught offside so gain of five yards down to the seven first and five from the seven yd line Edwards is the lone back three receivers to the right Craig Coleman is the blocking back he is off set to Evan HCK left now he goes up behind the line Edwards on the handoff has ran is in the end zone touchdown Keon Edwards is fifth of the season and with a nice efficient Drive the Mustangs are able to get to 17 points with the pat pending well when you get first and five in the Red Zone give it to your bread and butter and that's Keon Edwards with the ball in his arms they run an inside Zone and it just seemed as though the uh UFT Defenders the defensive tackles just sort of ran some sort of out Slants well the one got double teamed against uh by two Western offensive linemen so that's going to be a loss and uh you know they were able to split the SE and they were able to get it straight up and into the end zone low snap but Robertson's able to scoop it off the turf and G puts it through and the Mustang lead back to eight 18101 38 to play and let me just say you didn't think it would come into play already but the timeout they had to use on the field goal attempt right could have been could have been really handy here if they wanted to stop this drive here's a look at the Western athletes of the week the female athlete of week we'll start off with sorry Haley had a 632 batting average and 19 at bats this weekend for the Western softball team she had an Ops of 1.87 s a slugging percentage of 1. 211 12 hits sing triples 10 runs batted in and scored eight runs their the Mustangs went a perfect 6 and0 on the weekend and are headed to the ccsa national championship this weekend here's green on the kick return to the 10 looking for room to the 15 he's over the 20 yd line and so with 93 seconds left University of Toronto looking to generate a little offense maybe get some first downs and get out of this half only down eight points and I think they have to be uh thankful they've been doing quite well they've turned the ball over they' forced two turnovers on Downs Toronto defense except for that last drive has played pretty well Todd yeah I'm interested to see what they can do and a minute 33 to go in the uh to the end the first half I mean if they can get some momentum here 10 18 to 10 right now UF is in a great position so here's Barnett Williams is the lone back beside him now Williams goes out of the back field looking to go up the sidelines Barnett back to pass under pressure drops it off nice catch and it's fumbled and so the Mustangs recover it was Christopher Joseph with the catch looks like he made a football move and he was stripped as he tried to escape the tackle and the Mustangs forced the turnover on the Varsity Blues 36 yd line intered to see if uh if it was stripped or knocked out or if he just had it uh come out of his hands no it was definitely punched out by the the Western Defender Jackson Finley with the play just the fumbles just got a hand in there yeah hand in there coming back for the saw the replay that it was a reception as he was able to to spin out make a football move took a couple of steps and then Jackson Finley punched it out Mustangs have 86 seconds keano ybc play action drops it off there's Savon magn Jones out into the flats and the all Canadian steps Out of Bounds at the 21 yd line UFT is going to want to work hard now to make sure that they can keep the uh the Western Mustangs off the board again in the last minute 20 of this quarter so there's a look from the end zone camera of what happen Jackson Finley with a nice play to strip the ball first and 10 from the 21 80 Seconds to play receivers go in motion helck to the sidelines oh and they jump the route almost with the pick so it looks like Joshua Carter number six the boundary Corner jumps the pass row and is able to knock that ball down had he been another step ahead he could have taken that for a six but Weston was lucky to get away with that one so it's second and 10 Jamal wide right magne Jones Seth Robertson inside to the left yasbeck the lone back quickly the outside oh Jamal on the slant he's got a first down and more nice route by mosson Jamal we saw a misfire on that same route earlier in the first quarter Todd this one they connected perfectly so here we see on the first pass play down the sidelines there's Savon magn Jones that last one to mson Jamal and the Mustangs are back in scoring territory and there's going to be a Timeout on the field as the blues need to collect themselves so so let's take a look at Jamal again on the slant he to the bottom of the screen just drives his Defender down hard inside and Todd when you're giving a guy that much room really tough to provide any leverage on a slant like that yeah I mean the the UFT blue should have been in a man coverage down in the Red Zone there and that uh if that was the case Antonio Conte was definitely too far off number 34 for UFT now he's got to be tight usually going to take inside shade on there down in the red zone so that you're expecting slant routes those are the dangerous hot routes you want to take away you know and and give yourself you know with that inside shade you can give self a little bit of room and time if he wants to run the out so you know either they were in a very loose man or a Zone and late to react to it either way it was a a big pickup for Western and they put themselves in a great position very dangerous position for UFT six yd line with a minute 10 to go in the uh the first half this is not where UFT wants to be after having a decent field position and the ball just a couple seconds ago talk about A Tale of Two extremes UFT comes into this game coming off a huge Victory against York slightly different quality this week so yasbeck is the Deep back play action HCK on a great fake and he's going to take it in himself Evan HCK with the rushing touchdown beautiful play action between HCK and yasbeck and the Mustangs with their third touchdown now lead 2410 yeah number 44 the defensive end just crashed down looking for the ball to go to Keon Edwards as you would expect back that the 6yd line in doing so they leave the edge open everyone else is a man coverage and clearing out no one's there to account for the edge and HCK running around it to get the easy touchdown and you can just tell from the posture of the offensive line that was a design keep that was not that was not a read option well you could that looked like he pulled it so quick he knew they locked up you know shielding on the outside so great call with that inside zone right it's yeah the option the opportunity or the option to take the ball or give it but he knew it was coming there and exactly as to design everyone went with Keon Edwards and the edge was there for him to trot it in I'd have to go back into the archives but that maybe Evan HCK first rushing touchdown doesn't run often he does not run often in short yardage situations we've seen other quarterbacks yep you know do uh you know Jackson white last year Jerome Rand Jerome ranc with the would do short yardage situation I'm not sure if H actually has a rushing touchdown K HCK is not an athletic guy so I mean he's capable of doing it well you mean as a runner throwing a ball is still an athletic careful what you say no he's not an unathletic guy right right so the line drive kickoff the Mustang still with one timeout and the blues will take over on their 26 so now if your Toronto you have an okay average punter I'd say Western's able to force something here the Mustangs could see themselves again with the ball and another attempt to score I think if you're the Mustang D that's your goal here yeah I mean I have to imagine UFT is going to be safe with the ball here and not put themselves in that position so 102 to play Williams is the Deep back Barnett with receivers going in motion handing the ball off Williams looking for room gets through the line drags down to the 30 so it's a gain of four yards on the play little bit of extracurricular after the whistle you know UFT just wants to show Western that they're not intimidated or afraid of what uh what western has you know good five yards on the play there you know and they get another one of these and get a first down that really helps to take care of the clock for this second uh the end of the second quarter heading into the halftime but to your point they definitely want to keep it out of the hands of Western here at the end of this half so taking as much time as possible play clock down to 10 Scott Barnett double tight end formation three receivers to the right Williams is the lone back Barnett back to pass looking to go over the top got a receiver and it's thrown knocked down nicely and it's going to be incomplete and it's going to be third down 34 and a half seconds left yeah he definitely needed a few extra yards on that pass in order to catch that receiver running underneath it the Western defensive back was in a great spot and that ball a little bit under thrown was able to come between the receiver and the quarterback and get that knockdown so clock will not start until the snap of the football not sure this is the time to put some pressure on the UFT punter I would think Mustangs just sort of secure the cat and try to generate whatever offense you can when you you'll have probably about 25 maybe 20 seconds left for Evan HCK to try to engineer some more points at the end of this first half so hanky with the reception low wobbler Mustangs let it bounce there's kabango taking it there's a flag in the play and kabango has room down the left sideline Daniel kabango to the 40 3530 kabango one to beat turns it inside kabango to the two there's a flag on the play but I believe it's going to be no yards well I I think UFT is hoping it'll be a hold on the play but I'm not sure it will be I think you're right I think Dan Kongo with a dynamic return so kabango bounces back and just fumbles at the end but the ground caused the fumble and so there's a lone ref hold on and they're going to pick it up and so with 16.7 seconds left Mustangs can run Todd probably well depending how efficient you are you can get three plays off here yeah taking that shot downfield and stopping the clock on the incomplete pass was a bit of a gamble for sure high risk High reward this is a real dagger for University of Toronto if they allow a touchdown any points here was not great but a touchdown really is going to deflate this team who managed to go back down so ball is going to be on the one yard line they were down just 107 and the Mustangs have exploded in the last couple of minutes fost backfield Jerome rancour up under Center rancour handed the ball off little bit of a pile up but he's into the end zone touchdown little Shuffle step for keot Edwards his second touchdown of the game and so the Mustangs up 3110 so rancour often keeps it on these sort of plays but handed it off to Edwards and was able to shuffle his way into the end zone so precisely what you did not want to have happen as the UFT Blues there giving the ball back to Western a big gain which you wouldn't expect on the punt but could happen down to the one yard line and an easy end for another seven points so kabango again showing his value near the end of a game or a half with a timely return and Daniel Kabongo gets the Mustangs into perfect position without scoring himself down to the one yard line and then there's one where uh if you're Keon Edwards thank you Mr kabango that really should be yours yeah I mean and and kudos to Western I mean they took advantage of opportunities that they were given and benefited the way they they would want to I mean UFT gave the ball back to them they had a big gain and then then they do what they do they punch the ball in from uh short yardage in that red zone so three touchdowns in the final I'm just trying to think two minutes in change has really opened this game up so here's G with green back back G nice high kick green takes it on the eight yd line green trying to answer but going to run into some traffic o taken down right about the 24 so seven and a half seconds left and the Mustangs who looked like they were struggling offensively Todd really kind of you know had a number of punts turned the ball over twice on Downs this half but with touchdowns on three consecutive drives two of them being short following the punt return almost for a touch down by Daniel Kabongo the forced fumble by Jackson Finley gave it a short field at about the 31 then it was a drive to start this all where Keon Edwards scored from seven yards out and University of Toronto at the end of a game when one team is winning we call this the victory formation what what do we call it at halftime when you just want to escape to the locker room we give up we want to go in right now just form the concession formation at this point and so University of Toronto now down 3210 as the Mustangs pour it on at the end of the first half an explosion of three touchdowns in the final two minutes and change has made the Mustangs up 3210 and if you're the blues little bit of a gut check at halftime yeah I think they'll regret a couple of the calls they made there at the end of the half in terms of not controlling the clock better and you know like we said that to they had to be concerned about giving the ball back to Western in some sort of field position where they make something happen and that's exactly what happened so now they go into the halftime down 22 points instead of being down so 3210 at halftime second half kickoff coming up in about 15 minutes you're watching Mustangs football on oua TV we're exceptional student athletes are born where records are broken we great plays are made where school colors ignite passion where Champions Prevail where tradition is celebrated Ontario University athletics welcome to the been you you're the work nasty you want that smoke give him that b [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] for [Music] half Brian G opened the scoring with a 45 yd field goal and it was three nothing Western MOS and Jamal seveny pass from EV helik and the must things are rolling in the first quarter up 10 nothing following a 54 yd pass and run between Scott Barnett to Nick Green West or Toronto was able to get their first major Scott Barnett with a 5-yard run and it was 10-7 Western added a deep Rouge making it 117 Sam hanky from 35 yards out and it was 1110 after that Western exploded with Just 2 minutes and 38 seconds to play in the first half Keon Edwards from sevenard yards out made it 1810 following a fumble Western recovered and then had a short drive 36 yards and in 16 seconds Evan HCK was able to score from six yards out uh note from our friend Ryan Robinson sports information director HCK actually had two rushing touchdowns last year it's all a blur to you and me at this age Todd yep it is and then finally following a great punt return of approximately 60 yards from Daniel kabango Keon Edwards with his second touchdown of the game from one yard out and the Mustangs finished uh the uh blowing up at the end of the first half with a 3210 score going into halftime so in just two minutes and 19 seconds able to put on 21 points and this has really blown the game open well yeah I mean that pre that halftime speech from coach Marshall uft's coach Marshall changed drastically in the last two minutes going in eight down 18 to 10 at the halftime is one speech going in 3210 at halftime is a whole different speech and in reality in many respects that was more in my opinion some play calling by the UFT coaching staff instead of throwing that long shot to try and get a touchdown where the ball was incomplete clock stops had they run the the ball they could have kept the clock going a little bit they would have put less time on the had less time on the clock for Western when they received the punt to do anything and they could have got out of that half probably much less un well definitely less scathed so the last one maybe you can call on the coaches the one before that though here's your receiver trying to make an aggressive play yeah I you know there's a there's a penalty you really can't fault they've just scored you're only down 1810 there's plenty of time on the clock it looks like your quarterback has settled down from the first quarter you want to get something going and your receiver your first year receiver makes the first man miss and then Jackson Finley's able to come in and punch it out so credit to the Mustangs for being aggressive on defense and stripping that ball yep and ironically it was it was kind of a Miss tackle that caused the fumble as well he just sort of reached out missed the tackle and ended up getting uh was able to punch the ball instead um so you know as a Defender you'll take that any day and and Western was able to capitalize on that uh on that play So if you're Toronto you haven't been able to get your running game on track but you you have to really rely on your passing game from now on I mean Barnett has been okay when we look at the final stats you know from the first half he's five of 13 with one interception 109 yards half of that came on one play to Nick green for 54 yards so Barnett has to settle down a little bit can you go away from your running attack because look at the rushes they've rushed eight times for How many yards yeah eight times for 25 yards so they definitely aren't getting anything going on the ground I mean and and by at first Barnett you would have thought he wasn't going to get anything going in the air either but by the second quarter he was 109 yards passing not bad for you know basically one quarter of passing because the first quarter they didn't re uh complete many of their of the passes he was throwing um yeah you you might have to uh to resort to that now that said you don't want to become a pass skeleton situation where you're just passing the entire game you do have to set up that pass a little bit with the Run uh to keep Western defense honest but when you do that you end up giving up uh you know you give end up giving up downs and and yardage and you kind of paint yourself into a corner so at some point you're definitely going to have to come out and start throwing you look around the league some teams are doing that around the league Lauer for example is doing that quite a bit um so you know whatever's working you got to go with it you know Weston's going to come out in a zone so let Barnett try and throw the ball around and hit those open holes in that defensive Zone coverage and uh you know what maybe you can keep this game to what it is you know right now second half kickoff coming up in about two minutes time you're watching Mustangs football on oua TV uh two two and a half minutes we off yeah yeah was that like two minutes and less than two minutes yeah 1 minute and 40 seconds 14 138 was the first yeah so Nigel the good says open yeah running everywhere yeah like they're they're Western's just playing a Zone like soft too like they're just staying over top and that second level is wide open no there's no there's no pressure and they're not rerouting receivers very much either they're not really putting much work into [Music] see three innermost guy was not a tight end he was run sort of like a deep cross and he has and then theb just to chield because two tight yeah they they they threw that a couple times Finley came across and made that nice tackle on the one but uh only 86 yards rushing for Western well how many rushes 14 yeah that's it first half underway Brian G drops it in over the 25 just out to the 34 yd line that was the running back Garrett Ellis it looks like flag on the play late I think some's gonna get a a flag for chirping on the play here looks like a UFT player which is a shame just watching V Max von mu dorfer walking back towards the UFT end zone so unnecessary roughness against University of Toronto so maybe they got fired up a little too fired up with that half time speech yeah yeah yeah they got to come out to firing off cylinders in this half they want to keep it close now they had a decent return there and other than the shoelace tackle at the end he was going to get sprung for a few more yards so it's a shame to have given that up and 15 yards on top of it so he'll start from the 19 yard line that's Scott Barnett just five of 13 with one interception in the first half Williams is the lone back Barnett back to pass drops it off into the flat has a receiver taken down there's Thomas Roberts with the reception almost connected with Roberts in the first half as they ran a nice go pattern almost sort of a shallow wheel if you will gain a four on the play it'll be second down and six for the Blues just looking at that explosion it was 1 minute and 19 seconds the Mustangs were able to score 21 points one minute and 19 seconds has put this game in dangerous territory for University of Toronto and built in a nice safety factor for the Mustangs receivers Go In Motion empty to the right Williams is the L receiver Barnett pass through the hands of the receiver and it's going to be third down it was Jake oen who had a touchdown last week on a nice catch and run against York they're not playing the Lions this week got to secure that one yeah he'd like to have that one back cuz he was open in that seam there on that slant and went right into his hands and right out and he would have had a big first down plus some yards so he'd like to have that one back and I don't think he'll drop another one tonight so kabango and meseri are back standing on their 45 yard line hanky who averaged just 31 yards punting on five attempts in the first half gets the snap takes his time gets a nice kick this time kabango back at the 42 yd line looking for room around the right end and kabango has room down the sidelines to Midfield kago steps Out of Bounds at the 45 yd Line This is a dimension the Mustangs have not had in a while a dangerous Return Man like Daniel kabango yeah he's explosive I mean he made a few people Miss there and was able to get some room and get up the sideline I mean that was a great gain on a nice catch I mean that was uh oo 40 yards anyways 30 yards so nice job by kabango a few UFT bodies were flying around as well from Big Blocks by the Western Mustang so I'm sure they're happy too to have that opportunity to set up some uh some good blocks to get some good return yards the one thing they will look at during film this week Todd is the two times they went for it on third down and were unable to convert uh went for it uh both times one one was a pass attempt and the other time it was Keon Edwards who was stopped short of the necessary uh line to gain so the one not so bright spot for the Mustangs what do we call that the one dim spot in the first half was Zero for two on their third down conversions about as dim as the numbers on Western's jerseys but yeah you definitely want to be able to convert third uh third down opportunities I mean even to get a couple of them and I think characteristically Western is usually pretty good at to getting and converting third down opportunities especially when Keon Edwards has the ball so I'm sure they'll be disappointed in that meloff driver sorry Todd was the injured player he's a tight end for the blues Edwards offset to the right Mustang's in motion play action he's got the screen to misseri it's set up nicely misseri Cuts in cuts out and taken down at the 30 yard line make that a gain of about 16 yards and nicely set up on the screen pass was Braden masseri yeah it was nice they set up they sort of the power look to the field side the power run look to the field side and it threw the screen back to the backside on the boundary and that just sort of freezes uft's linebackers who are usually going to follow those guards pulling on that power look and was able to get the ball in the seam three receivers to the right misseri isolated to the left Edwards is alone back in the back field HCK back to pass looking to go over the top he's got masseri makes a nice catch into the end zone Bri masseri touchdown lovely catch by the wide receiver Braden masseri a second touchdown of the year and the Mustangs add another major that was a fantastic catch that ball somehow got through and passed number six defensive back Josh Carter and for him to be able to concentrate and focus on that ball with such great coverage that is a remarkable catch by the Western receiver so m able to focus nicely on the catch and once again gity through with the extra point that's his 35th consecutive extra point and with 1239 to play in this third quarter the Mustangs extend their lead now 38-10 and UF is going to have to do everything they can to keep their motivation and their energy up I mean to have Western come out and score on their first uh series of the of the third quarter you know they were already deflated that can sort of add another hole to the uh to the tire to deflate the momentum they were hoping to get to start this uh the second half so just think about this Tod so you give up three touchdowns in a minute plus to go down you know significantly in the half you come out on the first play the kickoff you take an unnecessary roughing and then you don't do anything PT the ball B give up a long punt return and then a touchdown they've had three deflating plays in the first two and a half minutes it'll be something for this team to keep its head yeah four four touchdowns and four possessions by Western and the last four minutes of game play is is tough great for Western but tough for UFT so the blues following the kick return will start on their own 21 yard line Barnett IS F five of 13 in the first half so he was one of two so six of 15 Williams is the lone back three receivers to the right Barnett puts him in motion play action on the slant makes the catch it looks going to be close to the first down so Jared curry with the reception only his second reception of the year and a nice job by Jacob Saunders to make that tackle they were in zone coverage they ran a slant not necessarily his area but he did a good job being aggressive to the ball carrier who received it and was able to get the tackle Now Grant it's a first down but it could have been a lot more heading up in there for that tackle UFT got has three receivers to the boundary side here so oh and they motion him across so Curry going to be the inside receiver to the the left Barnett back to pass drops it off into the flat he's got Williams Williams stops hard plant close to a first down he's got at least nine yeah and Coach gleon the defensive coordinator for the Western Mustangs he's going to be playing sort of a Bend don't break defense for you know much of the second half I would imagine they're going to play this Zone allow those underneath routes to sort of develop and give up the short passes rather than the long ones and uh you know that might take some time off the clock and give uh UFT some some time on the field but I don't think they're going to get a big strike on them with the defense that they're playing right now so Williams did indeed get enough for a first down two by two two backs in the back field Barnett back to pass looking to go over the top has a receiver almost intercepted Richard to do before long arm of the law on that one just couldn't bring it in but good position sandwich covered there looks like a du before was underneath yeah scart that was really taking a chance trying to thread that in not that that receiver was double covered but they had two defensive backs in that area and he just tried to thread it in on the field side to to that his receiver he was lucky that wasn't picked and a du made a great play on that ball to knock it down so Richard ad duor got the full length of his 63 height out there able to knock it down would have been a spectacular interception so second and 10 Western bringing pressure Barnett back to pass in the flats oh nice nice attempt dropped it over the defensive back but again it was Jared Curry couldn't come up with it curious selection here on this drive you target a guy two times who has one reception coming into this game I mean it's one thing it's like you got to go to your matchups but you have you have better Playmakers yeah you do you do but those Playmakers are probably matched up against better Defenders as well you know I think that ball was meant to be thrown a little bit earlier because the receiver was in the open Zone a little bit earlier but Western sort of got in his way and he had to take a step up into the uh into the pocket and threw it off late which caused the ball to be thrown so hanky kabango right on the sidelines in a small space is driven Out of Bounds at about the 39 not much room for Daniel kabango that time so taking a look at the defensive player of the week in the oua last week it was a tough test under the Saturday Night Lights it was Quenton Scott's electrifying efforts on the ground that helped the Wilford laor goldenhawk sort of Victory the third-year running back was a threat every time he had the ball in his hands 15 carries total 196 yards rushing he would find the end zone for the purple and gold a couple of times putting his team up by two possessions late in the game and sealing the deal on the team's week seven victory congratul ulations Quenton Scott from Lauer so first down play not going anywhere for the Mustangs loss for keano yasbeck on the play of maybe half a yard it'll be second down and long so as Western gets ready to start their next offensive series interesting point of note from Jake in the the the stats Booth here is that Western has four receivers with 45 plus receiving yards and three of them with at least five catch each savan magn Jones with five Jamal and meseri each with five receptions so H back to pass has time steps up into the pocket to the sidelines incomplete as he was looking for moss and Jamal on the sidelines and it'll bring up a third down and so the punting unit with AJ Williamson back on for the Mustangs Williamson just three punt attempts in the first half averaging 40 yards his longest was 58 so Williamson I think Todd we've seen get better week by week over the course of the Season still has had a problem catching it cleanly at times but it is interesting to watch the difference and mechanics between the two kickers on both teams so low snap Williamson gets into it spiraling out to the sidelines they're going to say no yards on the play so the Mustangs so the Mustangs are going to be called for no yards so it's going to be 15 yards added on at the end well it was a spiral didn't quite get the distance Williamson was looking for no but it's still a great punt when you can get the ball spiraling and get that nose over it's going to pick up a few extra yards you know what at night time as a receiver as a punt returner sorry catching those balls as it comes down could be difficult um to your point about his Improvement every week when you have a coach like coach wheeler for Wester as your kicking coach who's put a number of kickers into the CFL you know you are going to get the opportunity to to to improve each week and no doubt he's going to turn into a a great punter if he's not already so following the penalty UF will start on their own 49 yd line 846 to play in this third quarter Western has exploded with four consecutive touchdowns in a short order to make this game 3910 Scott Barnett installed as the starting quarterback three games ago for University of Toronto taken over for kinale Phillip three receivers to his right Barnett back to pass steps up in the pocket drops it off he's highe and it's incomplete he was looking for the Crosser he just put a little too much on that ball and as a result it came out a little high I think he was a little uncertain if that Defender was uh in a position to you know to get that knockdown or pick it and he just threw it and released it a little bit ear early I like as as though he's a little bit hesitant wanted to pull it back but uh nonetheless the uh UFT receiver was not able to get it second and 10 Williams is the lone back double tight formation receivers now go in motion three to the wide side Western coming off the back Edge Barnett under pressure has the sideline nice catch there's Nick green hauls it in at the 31 yd line so good connection between and the fifth year receiver Nick green and UFT is able to drive down into the Western end Western was coming with backside pressure as UFT overloaded the right side to the field no one was back to the left still pressure not able to get there first and 10 double tip formation again receivers Go In Motion Williams the handoff looking to peel off tackle right got close to a first down on that run yeah maybe his best run of the night for Adam Williams nice job a little inside Zone they ran it to the edge there but you like now they' softened up the box a little bit because they've been thrown so much that Western has been a little bit more passive with their with their defense and with their box so uh he had a little bit more room to run there and you know what they'll take it I don't think they'll make a habit of it this the rest of this quarter but you know they'll take that first down so just outside of the Red Zone not sure that's a disadvantage to UFT who's been the least effective team in the Red Zone in the oua just a 58% scoring rate and just 25% with a touchdown so there's Williams oh and he's down and he's grabbing his knee yeah you don't like to see that because nobody tackled him he had a bit of a slip he actually let the ball go as he went down and he's holding his knee so that often occur waits to a to a potentially devastating injury we hope that's not the case so Adam Williams fifth year running back just out of the back field they'll credit the gain of about three yards two and a half yards and then just as he's turning up field loses sort of his footing but it looks like it it's not like his feet come out from under him well no he he could see the Western Defender closing in to make the tackle so he planted to try and change direction and uh you know when you do that you know sometimes you know you're thinking like miniscus or or you know potentially something worse so hopefully it's not the case but uh nonetheless they have to carry him off as his teammates helping him out but he wants to walk it the rest of the way so good for him that's a good sign so Williams will be replaced by Garrett Ellis UF is second and seven ball in the 18 as I said earlier UFT has the worst Red Zone rating in the oua just 25% of the time they convert into a touchdown Western's at 67% as a comparison so is that worse than York that is actually worse than York that's not a stat line you want to hear so Ellis is the back Barnett back to pass lots of pressure has his receiver touchdown nice connection there's Jake oen who you mentioned was not going to drop none one again so it's Jake oen from Scott Barnett 18 yards on the touchdown and there's a Mustang down you know good for UFT I I believe they might have run a dig on that play and was able to get the ball uh in again underneath the safety just enough for the uh the touchdown but don't like to see the injured Western football player on the field is that Jacob Saunders Western had a number of ing injuries in their defensive backfield Rob Panabaker all Canadian halfback hasn't played in a number of weeks should be back next week coming off a hamstring injury Jordan Murphy who had a great start to this year and also has a hamstring injury so and by the sounds of it those uh those two guys you know they might have been able to gone but uh to have played tonight but you know considering the uh the scope of this game better to rest them better to you know let them have a couple of extra weeks of uh of recovery to get ready for Lauer at the very least and definitely for playoffs it also gives your other guys an opportunity to get some play time and um and some special teams time to improve their experiences so hky with the extra point and Western's lead is now just 22 3917 as University of Toronto so it's 620 to play in this third quarter Western leads Toronto 3917 and you're watching Mustangs football on oua TV oh [Music] 620 to play in this third quarter Western ready to receive the University of Toronto kickoff following the blues touchdown as a said worst conversion in the Red Zone just 25% for the blues so good for them for getting the major come on go from his five picking his way out to the 25 dances around one has some room on the outside oh by the Sho strings he could see the edge he wanted to get to that edge and he just gets tripped up by his foot nice play Brandon theodo the backup linebacker able to bring down kabango and so the the Mustangs with Evan HCK still at pivot will be out with a first down at their own 32 yd line some pretty good explosive speed off the return there from uh from him did you say he was a linebacker tiido yes wow pretty quick so three receivers to the right for Evan HCK Kean Edwards alone back play action HCK steps up into the pocket throws down in there's magn Jones is able to get close to the first down pardon me mosson Jamal with the catch so just watch Evan HCK pushed out of the pocket steps up drops it in for mosson Jamal and they're going to give him the first down so at their 42 yd Line near the right hash again Edward Wards the lone back three receivers to the wide side that's to HCK left they go in motion play action HCK going over the top has Jamal down the sideline stumbles Out of Bounds at about the 25 yd line so two in a row for moss and Jamal who came into this game as the leading receiver for the Mustangs for yards Savon mag Jones was the leading receiver in terms of number of catches Seth Robertson was the leading receiver in terms of number of touchdowns yeah that ball was a bit of a wobbler from Evan hillet getting out there number six it looked like Josh Carter was in great position but he's able to get the ball in big gain for Western so first down from the 25 three receivers on the left go in motion Edwards on the handoff has a crease up the middle Edwards taken down but he gets seven yards on the first down play Let's Take a look at mosson Jamal who now has over a 100 yards receiving great concentration by Jamal a nice work by Evan HCK giving him the outside shoulder yeah and he was just able to separate away from the defensive back and Fade Out to the sideline to get that uh they get that catch second down and a long three Edwards is the back taking the hand off looking to go off tackle left not much stutter steps steps inside looking to go outside great effort by Keon Edwards to get down to the 18 boy that was a long tough run for about a yard I tell you what the defensive uh unit there did a good job doing what they were supposed to do on the edge they did a good job containing then then Edwards would step up a lane the next guy would come in contain he would step up another lane and then he continued to sort of pursue outside before UFT was finally able to take him down so here's Brian G in for a field goal attempt second one of the game he was good from 4 five and no more as the first points of the game if you just joined us g hit the up hit the crossbar and just bounced over from 45 this is well within his range this is a 25 yard attempt from the left hash Robertson is the holder stap is down and little bit of a slice on that it looked like it yeah however easily within the goal post and so G makes the lead now 4217 34 4 to play and Toronto will get the ball on their own 35 Western has scored on their last five drives 31 points it looks like uh Western has put in some of their backups to have an opportunity to get some reps here number two Matt Williams on the fieldside corner and is in so he'll get an opportunity to to show his stuff number 18 Chris Cameron kogler as well but he was already in so first and 10 Barnett on the crossing pattern has his receiver there's Nick green puts his head down and Richard Adu before puts him down to the ground however not after a gain of 16 on the play so Nick green on the nice Crossing Road had a little time and it's going to be first down for Toronto 309 to play you know the fact that Matt Williams is in with Jacob Saunders having gone down in that last series we hope he's okay but probably precautionary decision to keep him off the field for this week and let him uh although we see Saunders riding the bike yep just trying to keep that knee warm and uh not let stiffen up first and 10 blues three receivers to the left nothing to the backside Barnett looking to go over the top on a Crossing pattern oh nice defensive work interesting play by UFT U Jackson Finley again swung everyone to the uh to the field side which pulled a du for o out and over top and they tried to sort of run that cross or back across into the boundary side where uh the DBS had vacated Jackson Finley from a safety position has another breakup he had four coming into this game that's his fifth he already forced a fumble to go with his three interceptions he's been a more than capable replacement for Dan Valente junor so good as the safety for so long abely yeah Finley's fun to watch He's athletic so second and 10 Barnett back to pass into the flats low able to skip it off the turf and nowhere to go after that though looked like oine was the receiver and he's able to get six yards on the play it'll be third down and four and and kind of curious It's 2 minutes left you're down by 25 you're in a not bad position in your punting although yeah don't give Weston more field position than they uh than they need I don't know Todd are you playing this one not to lose badly or do you want to play to win so let's see how Western defends the punt attempt from hanky gets it takes his time nice high kick into the night there's bra masseri down at his 11 makes one man miss stances around to Second and masseri has room to the 30 40 50 and then masseri down into UFT territory again great north south return by Braden masseri making about 40 yards on the return right back past the original line of scrimmage I know you'd never be one to say I told you so but had they gone for that and been an incomplete pass they would have been further ahead than they are now that's exactly right I think the kicker for UFT is going to go off and hold his head be uh he did the old kicker slide missing the tackle but that would have been a mismatch uh kicker on returner in that instance so the Mustang start again in UFT territory here's HCK Toano yasbeck yasbeck with a tough run right up the middle let's make it eight yards on the first down carry and this is where the Mustangs are hoping to do a little more damage on the ground UFT with just six defense Al linemen you'd have to think even with the mild temperatures this is the part of the game you're really are worn down at Todd yeah they're just going to uh they're just going to put their will onto the UFT line and just probably run the ball for much of the rest of the game and let the uh well certainly let Eric Anderson's backup get some uh a lot of reps in this half and and uh establish a bit of a run game the first year tackle getting the start today so yasbeck on the carry dances behind the line oh he's going to be close and again we're going to have decision time oh well you know go for it you need to practice this third down conversion you got the dogs to our point you know they're going to try and exert their will on on the uft's D line I I say you go for it and so here comes ran Court short yardage quarterback ball is just over point of the ball looks like it's just over the 45 looks like they have to get to the 45 so I'm going to say maybe two and a half feet is what they need ranc Court will take a look at the UFT yasbeck is the lone back ranc cour gets under Center and the push and they'll have the first down it looks like yeah and ran Court's an ideal quarterback for this a 65 248 pounds you could almost play offensive line himself so the odds are usually pretty good when he gets in and for the short yarded situations that they're going to convert so that's going to be the end of the third quarter Western now up 4217 on the University of Toronto Varsity Blues and you're watching Mustangs football on ouat TV [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so are they short no they haveen it by an inch Tonto what was Toronto looking at I think they before they extended the chain Mustang fans are you looking for Mustangs gear the bookstore and book Plus at Western or shop online at bookstore. uwo.ca so officially now the quarter has come to an end Todd however now we have a chance to discuss a few things looking at next week Western should be able to end you know this this game up 25 points Western uh looking to remain undefeated it'll be Western Lauer here next week for first place which not only comes with HomeField Advantage but I think even more importantly than that is that first week buy 100% that first week buy would be beneficial I think to all teams but certainly to Western right now like we just discussed earlier they have two hamstring injuries in the defensive backfield Eric Anderson at the right tackle position so and and clearly Evan HCK with a bit of an elbow issue so they would definitely look forward to the week off having just had one you know he get it gets a little dangerous in there and keeping the boys uh focused and motivated however you know sort of licking your wounds I think is sort of the more beneficial option with that uh with that buy I'm thinking back to 2017 I think they ended the season with an early Thanksgiving game and then a bye and then Ottawa and then a bye in the playoffs and then were able to because they only had you know a few games in that last month able to really recover for that four game playoff push yeah that's a tough push that's those are tough games and they take a their own physical toll so to get deep into the season that rest definitely helps so first and 10 to start the fourth quarter quickly to the flats there's Seth Robertson on the reception pardon me that's Keo yasbeck out of the back field so making a few more targets out of the running backs this uh game they came in averaging about one and a half receptions between fullbacks and and running backs they were certainly more targeted this game and tell me you don't like that match up when he comes out of the back field and now you're oneon-one against a cornerback uh in that yasbeck and Edwards size that's uh that's a clear uh lesson in physics from 32 HCK trying to buy time to the to the outside can't find Savon magn Jones and so the pressure is able to affect the Western quarterback and it's second and 10 so Jamal isolated to the right three receivers to the left meseri is outside Seth Robertson inside of him tightest to the line will be Savon magne Jones they go in motion magn Jones behind the line looking to get out in the flat HCK trying to buy time he's got his receiver yasbeck and it's not going to be incomplete just looking to leak out of the back field they're trying again once again Savon magnet Jones in the flat well covered and so now it's going to be Brian G out for a field goal attempt yeah number 48 Ryan Stewart for UFT the linebacker 62 215 he had a beat on that uh play the whole time when he came downfield hard and met the ball carry with a face full of helmet that was a nice play by the UFT uh linebacker so although Brian G's long is 48 he hit the crossbar but was successful from 45 this one is oh easy 39 yards for him so so here's Brian G pardon me from 39 year yards Robertson is the holder G is up and through three more points for Brian G with lots of room to spare lots of room so six drives in a row the Mustangs have scored four touchdowns and now back-to-back field goals and the lead is 4517 1357 to play it looks like the wind is starting to pick up a little bit in the stadium as well the the flags on the top of the uprights are uh are much more horizontal than they were earlier in the game so perhaps that's how uh the field goal picked up a few extra yards compared to the one he kicked earlier the other direction so Barnett two receivers to his left double tight formation Garrett Ellis the lone back three receivers now do to the right Barnett back to pass trying to set up a screen to the left and it's intercepted big man with the interception there's a flag on the play and then they go after interception not quite sure what U is fired up about but it was number 60 Sebastian Holden who then got called for the penalty and then has something to say on the way off the field if you're losing by 28 I'm not quite sure you're in a position to mouth off to the other team there coach no yeah there's no point to being a tough guy at that point because uh the scoreboards telling you who the tough guys are so yeah at that point you just need to sort of get get back to uh your sideline and let your defense come on and try and do the best they can I mean I don't I don't play him for the tackle for sure if that was going to be a flag in its own but the extracurricular is at the end so sain hmid who was injured earlier in the game back in with the interception and even with the horse caller you're you're not as an offensive lineman in a position to make a tackle very often it's not something you're comfortable s if you're if you're in a position there's a turnover you're hitting a guy yeah you're going to put your shoulder into him yeah it's a little out of your wheelhouses for sure and I mean simple tug and pull them into your arms like for a bear hug and a tackles you know you're going to get away with that but when you throw them to the ground with the Jersey that's going to get called every time the uh the purpose of the uh and so with back to back with the horse caller tackle and the unnecessary the unsportsmanlike conduct the Mustangs get the ball in the one yeah so the Rancourt comes in as the short yardage quarterback is it to Keon Edwards for the uh and the uh referee now going over to talk to Toronto's head coach their Greg Marshall and explain the situation about why the ball considering it started at about the what would you say 30 yard line following the interception not very well disguised if we went back and looked at that replay Todd not very well disguised by U looked like they leaked their offens alignment a little early sort hmid was able to sniff it out and just kind of stood there and it was delivered right into his hands yeah and credit to Wesson they had about three defenders in the area so uh if he didn't catch it the ball carrier wasn't getting downfield at all it would have been snuffed out in a hurry but yeah if the ball was on the uh I don't if it was on the 30 or the 25 where the uh The Tackle and the first penalty ensued you know he add 15 to that and then another 15 to the one yard line so may maybe it was the 31 that uh that the tackle occurred so now getting the full lecture over on the sidelines Sebastian Holden so first down goal to go Rancor up under Center second effort third effort not quite sure is he in touchdown Western Jerome ranc cour from one yard out and make it seven drives in a row the Mustangs have scored second touchdown of the season from Jerome rancour not quite as pretty as his first one when he took it from 22 yards out on the quarterback keeper but they all count for the same amount of points Todd yeah I think that one surprised everybody earlier in the season he was uh definitely able to uh Rumble and nobody would have expected that that's not his game but this one here was I mean 65 you're just leaning that ball into the end zone and he's not a small 65 he's pretty powerful so so G puts on the exclamation point make it 5217 so Rancourt on the first one not quite sure he's in but then just keeps his legs going and with the forward lean there's Keon Edwards right there cheering them on we don't have like we see in American football Todd and you and I have had this conversation about whether or not we like that push from behind you know the Eagles have the tush push or brotherly shove is the one I like from Philadelphia I I I'm I'm I'm not sure I know we get the origins from rugby right and we see The Ruck often when a play but if a plays downfield I don't mind it I just think it's kind of odd to see it to start the play not a not the biggest fan in Canadian football is slightly different yeah and it's not pretty but you know when you are utilizing the rules of the game fair enough so G from the 45 puts another one right in a small area for Nick green green has a little room down the sidelines oh hits the pile taken down at about the 29 yard yeah I kind of thought if he just uh took a step to the left instead of running over his own player he would have had a gap in a lane there to go but instead he tries to Pummel over his own player so let's take the look at this field level replay here's green just oh one little diagonal step looked like he had a lane well Sebastian Holden still in the game so the left tackle who got back-to-back penalties putting Western on the doorstep and at left tackle so handoff there is Garrett Ellis with the carry and he's got a first down on the play this this is going to be a nice little battle to watch Holden versus hmid for the rest of the game these two clearly do not have an affinity for each other yeah and you got to be careful because he gets another one of those he could be sitting for the rest of the game and you might lose him for another one but uh you know and there's no purpose for it at this point but nice inside Zone run there by UFT to pick up first down so once again Garett Ellis second year running back he's replaced Adam Williams who went down with a knee injury and he's got another first down as they get right to the Midfield mark and it looks like number 75 is on a knee looking for a trainer for UFT so that's Cole Davenport first year left guard University of Toronto not a lot of experience on this offens of line Holden the left tackle is a seconde player Colt dport is a firste player Benedict adoray is a firste guard on the right and Gavin heon firste tackle on the right Garrison pile has as much experience combined he's a fifth year Center so the center with 5 years of experience that's as much as the rest of the line has combined Sebastian St just coming in to replace Davenport at the guard position next week University of Toronto is going to be at home against waterl one of those teams is going to be three and five and they're going to be matched with gel and Carlton at three and five so first down nice Ellis almost escapes gets three yards on the carry and it's second down and seven yeah I think next week uh Tommy the laier western game here at home is going to be uh probably the most exciting game of uh of the season in the oua for sure one versus two one of them coming away as a number one team in the province on the victory so seven yards to go Ellis is the Deep back three receivers to the left empty back field now Barnett with time down the middle oh broke it up nicely and it's going to be third down nice work by Matt Williams the cornerback there to close on the receiver yeah great great closure on the receiver there it looked like uh the UFT player was maybe hoping for a little bit of a help from the referees there but I think it was so well timed up by the Western Defender that there's no penalty thrown it thrown at all and uh as a defensive back coach that's exactly what you want your guys to do so hanky on to punt or hold on no they're not they're going to go for it so it's third down University Toronto deciding not to punt this late in the game play action Barnett and it's intercepted and looking to go to the end zone there's Matt Williams 30 2520 Matt Williams touchdown pick six on the third down just stepped in front of the receiver not quite sure Barnett's Target on that well I know who the target was just not sure where he was throwing it to well the the receiver had a little bit of a stumble there the UFT receiver there at the 50 yd line and the went over his head but when the wheels fall off it falls off the last time they had to make a decision on third down they kick the ball and they ended up getting a big return to return it back to uh to the the to the almost to the point of the kick this time they decide to go for it and the ball goes the other way for six points so the slip on the play by UFT the UFT receiver is number 20 can't find him on my roster either coach so with the extra point 5917 1038 to play in the pick six so possibly could have been 80 which was Jared Curry was the receiver on that play if we go back and look at the replay again could possibly see it Mustangs now with back-to-back interceptions on possessions it was Jared Curry so once again Curry The Target just slipped and then it was Matt Williams was able to just stand his ground and with a down receiver just stepped around him and a great job by the Western Defenders after the interception to get downfield and and block for the returners so he could get that ball into the end zone Lawrence Bowers Kane leading that charge so G again Green from the five looking for a crease more up the middle oh takes a big hit as he crosses the 25 yd line although they gave up a punt return for a touchdown against Windsor I think their kick coverage has been very good this year for the Mustangs so Barnett takes a hit at the end from hmid stays on the ground not sure if we've seen the end of Barnett no he's back in I thought he was dead after that that hit I didn't see it in the original play but he took a lick from the defensive lineman from Western and but he's still going he's back in here so that was saen hmid again so Barnett handing the ball off oh high tackle is there going to be a flag or do he get him around the front of got him around the beginning I thought maybe had a face mask on that but it must have got the shoulder pad instead but uh no matter that running back came to a halt in a hurry so second and nine balls on the 27 yd line you know and good uh good for uh the uh the UFT quarterback to get up and get back in the series it would have been easy to sort of pack it in after that hit but Barnett still at it throwing the ball on the read again looking for curry can't find him into his hands knocked out and it's going to be third down what's do a nice job smothering the receivers in the defensive backfield right now in this quarter they're uh they're all over him and Barnett is not getting as much room to throw as he was earlier in this game so hanky back to punt Kabongo the lone returner so hanky with the catch kabango on the Fly no yards is going to be the call and kabango steps Out of Bounds at about Midfield another flag on the play yeah number 26 Bren Parker knew it right right away as soon as that ball landed into the returner's arms he knew he was inside that Halo rule he knew he was going to get a flag and there wasn't much he could do he was just getting downfield and the ball did not go quite as far as uh as the coverage was expecting it to as a coverage guy that one's tough because he under kicked that one yes 100% And so you're going as hard as you can to get into a spot on the field and when you see the returner coming up you can only put the brakes on yeah and the rule there is you got to watch the returner and once you get to a point where that Ball's coming down earlier than you expect you got to start to gather those feet and you know slow down and one of the dangers of this is is if you get inside the Halo rule the natural reaction is to Veer off and try and get outside that 5 yard Halo but if you do that horizontally you're giving it a lane for the return of to run down you know so you want to break and Retreat backwards and stay in your lane but you know like you said that was going to be too difficult for that to happen and as such so unnecessary roughness and no yards from Toronto put them together and I believe it's 30 yards so it's down to the 26 yard line I'll be interested to see the penalty yards after this game we've seen 60 in this quarter alone on two plays yeah you don't want to give free yards to Western that's for sure so receivers in motion Jerome rancour now in a quarterback there's keano yasbeck on the carry keeps feet going as he spins down to the 18 Toronto desperately trying to yank it out so there's jome ranc Court big quarterback as you said 65 240 plus pounds now into the game for the Mustangs coming into this game 50 66% completion percentage one touchdown has two now on the ground here's yasbeck on the carry bounces off one looking to get outside oh and a great stiff arm yasbeck taken down at the six and boy oh boy what a stiff arm to get around the end while a u player is on the ground we'll see that replay I love watching yasbeck run I mean different than Keon Edwards who himself is a powerful Runner yasbeck number for Western God at 6 feet 209 lb he is an explosive Runner and we just saw an example of that as he pushed number 34 he took a odd tackle at the end of that play well when you're tackling yzc you got a tackle him low and now the risk of that is always getting a helmet in the knee or or worse so yeah yasek down is not something that the Western sideline will want to see that's for sure so I'm sure Keon Edwards will be coming back in but if you can get to your third running back at this point that would be the safer play at this point of the game so yesb getting attended to you know this is maybe where we bring Troy Thompson or Ethan Dolby into the game and let them carry the ball the rest of the uh the rest of this quarter to get them out of this uh game in full health so well there's a well there's a Timeout on the field we will take one as well just 816 to play in this game in Western comfortably ahead 5917 you're watching Mustangs football on oua TV L you're more than your successes you're more than your failures you're the wor it's dirty work work that hurts work that defines you it's that fire that burns inside you you it's always been you you're the work Nast you want that smoke give him that B did you see who they brought in did they bring Keon in or I think Troy Thompson [Music] [Applause] 816 to play first down for the Mustangs keano yasbeck walking off gingerly following that great carry but just an awkward tackle at the end Troy Thompson now into the game first down Mustangs offset to left to Jerome rancour Thompson on the handoff bounces back to the left Nowhere to Run nice play by Toronto to stop the first down run yeah they definitely Clos that up inside I mean the the option for the running back now is to bounce it to the outside I'm not sure Troy Thompson's quite as uh Fleet of foot to do that but the uh the outside edge was there and Rancor was probably there to even help set the edge a little bit but can't get there as such no gain second down three receivers to the left they go in motion Rancourt play action keeps it himself Rancourt turns it up and rancour lowers the shoulder into the end zone that's a tough tough man to stop at full speed yeah and the Mustangs with Jerome Rancor second of the game now have 65 points on the board yeah p number 34 the uh the defensive half back for UFT had to uh be ready to take him on one-on-one that's uh again a physics lesson that 34 isn't going to win and that's after already being pushed into the turf by yasbeck two plays earlier so G with the extra point it's good Let me just count these up Todd one two three four five six seven eight possessions in a row but nine scores cuz they had a pick six in there as well Toronto defense which started out fairly Stout I mean this game was 1110 at one point it's now just turned into a route well it turned into a route a while ago I believe uh with a minute to 40 to go in the second quarter that's when really the game changed it was Western getting that first touchdown seven yards out from Keon Edwards with about a minute 40 to go and then forcing a fumble on uh the next drive so short drive to score again and then a dynamic return and then Brian G on the mercy kick out of bounds so G kicks it out of bounds it's 25 yards from where the ball was kicked so Toronto will start at their 40 yard line with half a quarter left to play mercifully well look after playing uh Western this week you know with UFT playing waterl next week I mean if your bench is healthy here you know the the opportunity to play a team as powerful of as Western you know coach Marshall for UFT can go into this week and just say hey look it here's the things we did well against the team as good as Western let's do that against waterl and you know this potential for good outcome as opposed to you know uft's players maybe feeling down and disheveled after uh this performance and and potentially not having the momentum against waterl so we'll have to see so kinel philli now in at quarterback given the handoff Philips started the year as the Toronto pivot completion percentage of 52% but over the course of four or five games no touchdowns just one interception I think what we saw from Barnett I can see why they made the change yeah I like Barnett's uh I like his touch I like his presence in the pocket yeah other than does enough play other than that first quarter I mean he's had a great game and other than this fourth quarter where Western hasn't given the receivers much room to breathe he's been great at completing passes and getting the ball in those zones now to be fair he threw three three interceptions yeah one of them the first one was his fault right the second one the receiver slipped yes the third one he threw it to a defensive lineman covering up that that that was his fault and yeah the screen that's a little bit different than a than a passing route but still nonetheless he has to know to not throw that when there's so many black jerseys around you're running back in the screen throw it away but you know these are the lessons you learned when you're playing against a great team like Western so third down and [Music] short UFT obviously going for it receivers Go In Motion Western bringing some pressure handing the ball off oh met in the back field Josh maik had nowhere to go as the defense just fired through through and it's going to be first down for the Mustangs great play Olivier Ru the seconde linebacker coming in on the Stop and it's clear that coach uh defensive coordinator Paul Gleason's not letting up on the ponies he's still bringing a little bit of heat and not sitting back passively well timed by ruay from his linebacker position so we see Philip on the snap giving the ball off and Ru is already in the back field along with sain hmid so first down Mustangs Sorry 4 receivers Go In Motion keeping the ball himself rancore looking to go to the outside steps out of bounds gain of about five yards looking around the US Sports top 10 thanks to Jake Williams great battle Montreal Laval however haven't seen a score like this in a long time Montreal shut out Laval 28 nothing M so the number two Montreal Caravan shut out Laval 28 nothing Wilford laier beat number Wilford laor at number four beat number eight Windsor 40 to7 St F ofx beat Mount Allison 52-7 I'm sorry but number five for St FX all right Saskatchewan lost to Alberta who's the number 19 2320 flag on the play UBC lost to Calgary 20 to6 Windsor as we said lost to Wilford Lauer Queens be 12 2417 they're the 10th ranked team so that's a look around the US Sports top 10 looks like Western will remain at number one with the victory tonight it's next week that really will determine the top 10 ratings with Lauer now up to number three I would assume perhaps even number two but I think Montreal's trouncing of Laval will secure that number two may even put him with a couple of number one votes beat lval handily you may get a couple of number one votes for Montreal following that so offside for Western second down and 10 receivers go in motion for Rancor handing the ball off through the line is Thompson trying to get something going not much there and he's going to get five yards on the carry it's going to be third down yeah looking ahead to uh you know when you start to get into the ort uh playoffs the uh the oua having to go to Quebec this year will be a great matchup between the uh the number one coming out of each of those provinces so no returner for UF so Western making some du of Toronto luckily able to sub someone on they had no returners back but Western with late substitutions allows University of Toronto to get people on so Western only had 10 players on youf ton only U only had 11 think everyone now they're back at 12 everyone's fallen asleep but not very good awareness by UFT by not dropping at least a linebacker of back just in case the ball was punted so OT overloading the left side just sort of set up the return Williamson oo wobbler off the side of his foot terrible punt for his average so Williamson I am not even sure you got 20 yards on that kick trying to directionalize it yeah I I mean for all intents and purposes Todd this game is over however the stats are not going to explain that no no I mean it's gonna it's gonna be one where it's like oh he had a 20- yard punt yeah and I'm sure he was trying to you know kick it out of the bounds out of bounds on the boundary side probably down around the 5 yd line so that there's no return and again trying to reduce the amount of people that you're getting contacted at this point of the game it just sort of keeps things uh under control but yeah not qu that was a little bit shorter than he was expecting I'm sure so 410 to play kinel philli in his quarterback first down looking to roll outside under pressure escapes from a tackler looking downfield throws across his body oh threw the hands of the receiver uft's had more than a few occasions where a ball has gone through their hands and it's going to be second and 10 yeah the UFT receivers didn't help him out very much there once he get out of the pocket they really got to start moving a little bit to uh to shake off the Western Defenders instead they just sort of sit they run the hooks and they just sort of sit in their spots instead of dragging out with him Marcus Robinson firste defensive tackle made nice pressure however Philip was able to get around him but still nice upfield pressure by Robinson on that play yeah the first year uh uh player from South collegia also a great thrower in track and field so philli over to the sidelines was it an equipment issue there the referee allowing some sort of change to be made they didn't call a timeout play clock ready to go so maybe there was something on philli that they didn't agree with they okay they did call a timeout all right three receivers to the right mat the running back taking the hand off looking for a gap up the middle Josh madik has about 12 yards on the carry and it's going to be a first down for Toronto he he just put his head down and went found a seam it was able to pick up the 12 yards good thing there was no variation to the hole he was going to hit yeah and nobody in his way just straight up the middle I think he's just saying where is everybody why am I not getting hit three receivers to the left mik the lone running back Mustangs just bringing four mik with the carry cuts it back inside good ball security as they try to knock it out and it's going to be it was rue again trying to free the ball from the grasp of matsik but unable to do so it's going to be second down maybe about two yards was that number 51 Muhammad Rita on the tackle good to see Mohammad Rita into the game first year player getting his first experience out there as well looking for number 72 Luca blazzy from Toronto who's getting some playing time tonight Phillip handed the ball off there's matsik up the middle oh takes a big hit oh and a Clos line took a huge hit at the end yeah Matt maic's only 5 foot n so when you got a big linebacker bearing down on you very often it's going to the tackle is going to come from up high which was the case there so bloy Luca bloy the firste player double teamed spins off and makes the tackle nice play by the young defensive lineman it's exactly what you want to do in these situations when given the opportunity to play first and 10 though mat on the hand off has some room up front finds a hole puts his shoulder down he's able to get another first down so just coming up to two minutes to play nice Tackle by number 18 Chris Cameron kogler from Western stepping up into the hole with the uh the the UFT running back running full speed atam Chris Cameron kogler now taking over Jackson Finley his evening is done so Cameron kogler moves over from the defensive halfback position Bo into the safety spot nice job the experienced player who's a transfer to Western has played all over the defensive backfield no stranger to the safety position Western bringing some numbers matsik not much room there matsik is able to get maybe three yards Olivia Ru is the tackler little extracurricular after the play again so second down close to seven three receivers to the short side of the field for kinale philli back to pass steps up in the pocket looking to run has a blocker ahead of him gets the first down avoids a big hit and steps Out of Bounds at about the 38 yd line nice job by 13 is at 125 to play and Phillip able to find the soft spot in the defense I think his coach will tell him make sure you tuck that ball away when you're running that ball in the open field because that's how you'll get the ball stripped as a quarterback but you know he's keeping it out there as an option you know in case he wanted to throw it or at least you know letting the defense think he might want to throw it so first and 10 trying to trying to get some consolation points here 85 seconds left ball in the 37 yd line Philip handed the ball off run right up the middle o bit of a pinball action for Kyle neppa first year running back has a gain of about five on the play Mak sort of ran into the uh the butt of his lead uh Blocker on that play it's empty the bench time for you of t as well lots of backups getting some action right now game is well out of hand Toronto taking its time Philip with three receivers to his right double tight formation just the one back back to pass looking for down the middle taking a shot over the top oh it's going to be pass interference butat touchdown great concentration by the receiver to pull that ball in despite the pass interference by the Western Defender so Christopher Joseph with the touchdown 32 yards so 33 yards officially and able just to get in behind Callum jinsky on the seam route into the end zone so here's hanky for his third extra point attempt of the night and he's good so 55 seconds left in this game and make it 6624 next week the Mustangs host the Lauer Golden Hawks West currently ranked number one of the nation Lauer ranked number four battle for first place home field advantage and a bye I expect a large rockus crowd however as we know a little weather dependent sometimes yeah yeah unfortunately this time of year yeah you can have uh some fair weather fans for sure but Western Mustang fans are usually known to be pretty supportive so hopefully we get a full house next weekend I mean the Western laor is a pretty good draw I mean number one and two in the province and uh what' you say number one and four in the country one and four in the country I would say now one and three following Laval's loss to Montreal and and Lor putting up an impressive win against Windsor so one and three both undefeated traditional rivalry between the two purple schools especially come playoff season I mean as much as we'd love to have you sit and watch us on oatv we'd rather see you here in the stands come on out next week it'll be a big game so hanky with a Low Roller leaves it for kabanga looking for some room kabanga wheels up and gets another good return about the 39 yard line and Rancor in to finish this game just 46 seconds could pull it off with two knels if you use the clock wisely depending how aggressive Toronto is on their def defense just victory formation let 5 Seconds come off the clock and you should be able to run this clock out yep I think at this point there is nothing to prove for either team no even the backups just you know what and to uft's credit I mean they were able to prove a little something at the end of the game which I think is positive they can take out of this game into next week and is that that's a fact that the end of this game they were able to put a touchdown in against Western so I think rancor made a I mean it's one of those minor errors you can excuse but take as much time as you can when you snap the ball before you take a knee like now there you go perfect under 20 seconds some good clock watch in there by the referee and ranc court and so now and some good Sportsman like play by UFT there because you know they were just letting that allowing that clock to run down and so now the clock will run down Rancor can snap it take one final knee and this is not going to be a situation like Mario chryst ball in Miami so that's the final snap of the game and the Mustangs 6624 in a game that was tight until about 2 minutes left in the second quarter Western was leading 1110 and since then outscored the UFT blues 55-4 and as part of blackout night it is a fireworks display as the lines form for the customary end theame handshakes now if Under Armour had a design jerseys like the uh photographers vests on the field that'd be nice because they light up nicely in the light blue light but they've turned the lights out here at Western stadium so we can watch the uh firework show nice touch by Western so is the handshake lines go through Western extends their unbeaten streak to seven they sit a top the oua tied with the lauia Golden Hawks and that sets up next week's pivotal matchup for first place the first seed in the playoffs and a Buy in the first week between Western and Lauer on behalf of our chief statistician and Rak onour Jake Williams on behalf of the executive producer Dan D our director is Nick M Nick MC Pickers Todd McKay is my partner my name is Tom McConnell enjoy the rest of your
