Trips to the grocery store got a bit easier for some people in Lancaster County as the Dollar General Corporation works to provide shoppers with healthier food options. Fox 43 Sydney Nauman spoke to shoppers who said they were shocked to see those items on the shelves. I'm here today. Getting fresh produce for shoppers like Mary Cunningham, a trip to the store meant seeing new items on shelves. This week, I got some cherries. I got some grapes and I got some apples. This is not your traditional grocery store. The Dollar General in West Hempfield Township is the newest chain store to add fresh produce to its shelves, which shoppers say and a produce is really fresh. The produce is actually amazing. This edition is part of the Dollar General Corporation's Food First initiative which provides customers with healthier food options and a larger variety of products to shop. I'm amazed with the variety of things they have inside. In a press release company, officials said the expansion of private brands like Clover Valley has allowed them to make these changes, providing fresh fruits and vegetables in at least 3900 of its 20,000 stores as of 2023. And as a discount store, consumers say the prices for these products fit the bill. I can honestly say when I went in there, I was surprised I could get cherries for $2 like they're like 499 a pound at the regular supermarket. When comparing the West Hempfield dollar General produce prices to the nearest grocer giant food stores. Prices were considerably higher ranging from a dollar 50 to $3 more. With just over 17,000 people living in West Hempfield township in 20 $20 General explained in a press release that this expansion is crucial with many residents relying on the retailer for their basic everyday and household essentials. So this saves me a trip from going to the big stores. I could stop here on my way home. I just picked up bananas and stuff yesterday, which we couldn't do before. So it's really, really nice.
