The PlayStation 5 Pro Is Bad News For Gaming

I'm not really a Sony or Microsoft apologist nor am I a Nintendo apologist by any means but whenever you talk about something like this people will read into it whatever they want to if you criticize PlayStation people say you're a big Xbox fan if you criticize Xbox they'll say you're a big PlayStation fan if you criticize Nintendo they'll say you're the Antichrist but I will say that I don't really have an allegiance to any of these Brands I think that they have some cool characters pretty much all of them there are exclusive games that I like there are exclusive games that I don't understand why they were exclusive cuz I didn't think it added anything to it and there have been highs and lows of all these companies you check my channel I've called them out whenever I noticed them and honestly care about it uh because I think I'd be doing it every day if uh if I was you know calling out every single one of them but PlayStation has kind of pushed the PS5 Pro as their next step in gaming don't know why I have a lisp today but the PS5 pro has been getting criticized for a lot from its price point to its lack of disc drive all the way down to you know what it's kind of promoting as a gaming system and who it's cutting out but today I wanted to kind of take a look at this from the angle of physical gaming of physical media I genuinely think whether you care about physical games or you haven't bought one in the last 10 years I still think it's good to have options when things like this happen things like the PS5 Pro things like the Xbox series s and they do incredibly well no disc drive no push for physical nothing like that but Jay you could buy a separate disc drive I know and we will talk about that I promise you we will when things like that do well what it does is it sends a message to companies that do not actually care about the artistic side that do not care about the ownership side or you know what you own it sends a message to them that you don't want options that you don't want the ability to have options not that you don't want to buy physical but that you genuinely just want them to make the thing however they want sell it to you however they want and that you will consume it and that's what I want to talk about today at the end of the day how you spend your money is up to you if we were to you know micromanage everyone's wallet we'd have criticism of everybody myself included I've got my own criticisms of me but I just want to talk about what a system like this just like the Xbox series s could do to the marketplace to companies to show them what Gamers actually want or what video game players since they Gamers is kind of cringe actually want out of their media now if you enjoy this video you want to leave a like looking at it the price Point's pretty steep for what it offers and then to add on to it to make it an even better console it's even more money what worries me about the PS5 Pro is the same thing that worried me about the Xbox series s that I feel like a lot of people ignored at the time now when the Xbox series s was coming out and the series X obviously as well physical media production for Xbox was still in high swing you know it was still going strong there were still physical games coming out all the time pretty much everything was released for the most part both ways unless it was a smaller game and of course as well Game Pass was not nearly as big as it is now right I mean like it wasn't a a force of nature that it is nowadays and I understand why Game Pass caught on it's a pretty cheap way to get access to a lot of games access being the key word not ownership but access but Jay when you own a disc you don't own the game you do own a disc with a physical 1.0 build of a game on it though that you can install from the disc but jay most of those games don't work right without patches this is actually false there are games that don't work right without patches absolutely and that need massive updates or need a ton of additional content to be worth playing that's unfortunately something that in the modern landscape you need to do research on it sucks you shouldn't have to but you do but there are also a lot of games especially compilations of older games where the physical 1.0 build you know maybe of an HD remaster or maybe sometimes even of a new game straight out of box works perfectly fine and is very fun Stellar blade was an example of that actually recently now they will add in photo mode they will add in costumes and stuff like that over time so I understand the argument that the 1.0 build is not the perfect build of the game but it is a complete Game experience astrobot is actually another one recently that was a complete Game experience out of the box so there are lots of games that are still finished there are lots of games that are still done with that disc to me that says that unless there is a killer deal or we're looking at old retro games where the market is just a joke and people have inflated the prices of things far beyond what they should be when you can honestly just download a you know a ROM of it for free not that I'd endorse that I'm just saying that you know when these companies don't actually sell their games in a legal way and you have to go to an eBay scalper who's selling rule of rows for $500 or $11,000 or whatever on the PS2 I would understand it but my point is that when you buy these things right to me what it's saying to Sony to Microsoft Etc is the same thing that buying the Xbox series s said to Microsoft it said that that disc drive didn't matter it said that that option didn't matter and by the way the series s did sell very well in fact it's being blamed by a lot of Developers for holding back video game development because it was so much less powerful than some of its peers at the time uh the same way the Nintendo switch has gotten you know Flack for that as well so that's not just an Xbox Thing by any means when I have a disc it gives me an option it gives me the option of having that 1.0 build I could disconnect from the internet I could down you know install it right off the disc it doesn't always require a download in fact most of the time it doesn't and play it right there when things like this do very well and I'm hesitant to say that this one will because obviously it's gotten a lot of push back I think it's testing the waters and Xbox shows us that Xbox tested the waters with the series s and what did it tell them it told them that people valued Game Pass more than owning a physical item it told them that people valued a cheaper console which if you bought it I'm not [ __ ] on you I'm just telling you like I'm not attacking you I understand money being tight my first console was the PS2 I had it for 10 years almost before I got anything else I got a used Game Boy Advance in the middle there for like 50 bucks from a friend because my family was pretty poor we didn't we were not well off at all I understand going with a cheaper option that's not what I'm attacking here but it does tell these companies that you value affordability and cheapness over quality the thing with the PS5 Pro that's interesting is that it's the same idea as the series s except it's not cheaper so the disc drive has been stripped out there are some additional features that are supposed to make old and newer games play better but there is no disc drive and the vertical stand if you want to buy it costs extra as well so that's already something that uh is going to boost that price from $700 or Euros up there even more I believe and I think I'm not an economist but I believe €700 EUR is technically more than $700 us not sure why there's a price differential there but there is maybe it's tariffs and taxes things like that I don't know but what's interesting to me is that this is going to add another hurdle as well to the options let's say that this is as popular as the series S I don't think it will be because of the price point and because you know the stripped features with the series s the justification was it being significantly cheaper right same as the Nintendo switch light the handheld without the ability to dock it and put it on your TV the justification for that is this thing is cheaper you want it for younger people or maybe people who are not as economically advantaged or whatever you want to say want that that appeals to them CU then they're still able to game unfortunately a lot of people have been priced out of the hobby of gaming they really have a lot of people especially in today's economies don't have the kind of disposable income and that's what it is is disposable income uh that you have to save up outside of your Necessities like food clothing utilities Etc in order to get into this hobby Retro Gaming has become expensive building a PC if you want it to be good kind of expensive you know then you have to buy monitors as well getting these consoles is now a $500 United States us minimum for new ones now we're looking at something like $700 you know or more people have been priced out of this Hobby and I understand when they go for that cheaper option because they've been priced out of the Hobby and they want to still be able to enjoy the Hobby and that's fair but this is going to add another hurdle to physical gaming and the main reason it's going to do that is because of that external disc drive stripping out this disc drive what it does is it adds a barrier where you now have to go out of your way to buy another disc drive you have to go out of your way to buy this console then you have to go out of your way to buy a peripheral that you can then install in the console which by the way is being scalped now people are buying up the PS5 disc drive attachment and reselling it on eBay for multiple times the price cuz people are scummy that's what they'll always do they prey on uh people wanting to have fun that's really what it is and basically this hurdle will mean that people have to go out of their way to get this disc drive maybe they have to go out of their way to buy it on eBay maybe they have to go out of their way to buy it from Sony themselves either way they have to go out of their way to buy an additional peripheral what happens when we add peripherals to consoles or peripherals to computers or peripherals to anything that are not required well they're not going to be with every console right there's going to be a lot of people who buy that console who never get that peripheral that's obvious isn't it I mean it's an option again like physical gaming it's an option but you add that option and it adds to the price tag so now people have to go out of their way to buy that they have to go out of their way to install it on the system and then after that they now have to go out of their way to buy physical discs now normally this wouldn't be a problem you go to Target you go to Walmart you go to any of these stores I don't know about every other country what store you have just keep in mind I'm in the US you can find those physical discs especially for PlayStation and Nintendo but if you look at the Xbox sections in most targets Walmarts Etc they're smaller every year why do you think that is it's because the series s and the push for Game Pass even on series X Xbox One all these other things it has told video game developers and video game companies that that form of media physical gaming is not valued anymore that it does not matter that the benefits of it don't matter being able to own a 1.0 build being able to have a collectiable all those things being able to resell your game something you still can't really do with owning digital games by the way those things don't matter two people that option doesn't matter so now we're seeing games like Marvel versus Capcom the collection you know the basically the whole classic collection where it's got like Capcom and Marvel games and all these things on it and the Punisher game actually surprisingly fun game that game is getting its physical about 2 months after the actual digital launch the digital launch happening I believe when I record this like in the next day or two that's not a good sign and some people point to it and they say well you know it's because they wanted to get it out faster for digital okay let's just say this examp ex Le is fine Dead Rising another one that's coming out later on physical Lollipop Chainsaw another one that's coming out later on physical this is becoming more and more common or even the many many games that never get a physical that only get a physical through limited run like they don't get a MSRP retail widely Mass distributed physical copy what they get is a digital and then 6 months to a year later maybe they get a limited run games physical still a better option than not having an option but again we're seeing more and more of these games get pushed back more and more of these games get physical you know releases that are either incomplete or just are months to to a year later I mean even I think my friend Alex podcast now he covered this he talked a little bit about this trend with physical games that it's more and more of them coming out later so now we have another console which has already boosted the price point of what gaming is probably going to be on things like whatever the PlayStation 6 is or it stand in whatever the next Xbox machine is which I think might even just not have physical discs at all at this point I don't know it's now raised that cost but also removed that option so you now have that barrier of buying that disc drive like I said installing it you have to get it separately from someone else or from Sony who knows depending on if it's available at the time or being scalped then you have to actually go out of your way to buy those disc you might have to go to the store you might have to order it online it's not that instant gratification of getting it immediately and on top of all of that some of them don't come out for months later now look PC is doing fine and it is all digital I understand that I'm not lost on that I built my own PC took me a very long time to save up for the money for it and I still don't have good monitors I still have monitors that are like 10 years old at this point need to be replaced cuz the bottom of one of them is burning out I get not having a lot of money and going for cheaper options or having to wait a long time to buy what you want that's usually what I do is I don't go for the cheaper option I just wait forever to buy what I want and save up money slowly at a time because that's just where I'm at in life I I just can't drop the money on stuff I get it but I do prefer to have options even for my PC I own a dis drive and it's for some of those classic games that are harder to find through digital media Outlets you know they're they're not some of them aren't even purchasable anymore I think it's sad though that as we've gotten further out people have given up that option they haven't said I like both they haven't said well I prefer digital but I'll buy physical too they've just given up the option entirely to the point where now these companies can set the price and again I think this is why we're at you know where we are with the PS5 Pro a lack of direct competition has been cited as one of the reasons why this price is probably so high well when we get to digital games what do you think is going to happen when there is no competition there's no physical games well now you can do whatever you want with it just like they do with PC games now PC is doing fine but DRM is a huge problem you know having these random programs inserted into your games or affecting your games almost like malware it's a problem to the point where there will be people who pirate new games just so they don't have to deal with these stupid security you know things that eat up resources on their computer there are no real options for PC other than steam so sometimes Gog which is you know Galaxy games and epic game store and for a while there was really only Steam and Gog the same thing is going to happen with console as we tell people we don't value options there will be a lack of direct competitor and they're able to do whatever they want with these games and as physical games aren't printed I do worry about the future of video game preservation you know why I worry about it because there's games coming out now that are compilations of old games or remakes of old games that are censored for example a curat Toriyama Creator I truly respect behind the you know the character designs of things like I believe Chrono Trigger you know made Dragon Ball and also Dragon Quest character designs things like that he died right and yet now we're seeing character designs he worked on be censored after his death and re-released if there is no physical of a game who is to say that you can't just go back in and Patch it in those censorships later on you know who is to say that there will be a preserved copy easily accessible of that original game like let's say that I made a game tomorrow and in 20 years they they choose to censor it but it was digital only and it was only released on PS5 well now it's going to be harder to back that up it's going to be harder to have a physical copy of that I can dump PS2 discs onto my computer and play them through an emulator right now I have that option or someone could find a ROM of a game no longer available they have both options my point that I feel like a lot of people Miss in these videos cuz they want to defend one side or the other is that options are key options are what cause these products to be better without options they almost always get worse because you don't have an incentive to price things affordably you don't have an incentive to include every feature you don't have an incentive not to censor you don't have an incentive to listen to the audience at all and I don't mean insane activist people or like crazy Fringe people I mean the actual audience that values your games you don't have an incentive CU you're the only game pun intended in town so they can either buy from you or they can buy from nowhere the same reason I say I don't want there to be only one console on the market the same reason I say I don't want Xbox to straight up fail or I don't want Nintendo or Sony to straight up fail because that lack of competition I have never seen it lead to good things in the media industry in particular lack of competition is you had things like the phone industry split up into a bunch of smaller companies with antitrust laws lack of competition is why you see huge corporations nowadays able to do whatever they want and get away with providing poor customer service because there's no other option to buy from that's just what it is and you take it or leave it I don't want gaming to go that way too that's not what I want and I don't understand why some people do
