The three changes that must be made to the Rising Star after Reid & Darcy fiasco - Footy Classified

extraordinarily Harley Reed in his first season almost as he goes west coast go it's as simple as that at the moment isn't it he's been the spark and Ross L spoke about this at halime on the game on the weekend and Adam Simpson afterwards thought Harley raid lit him lit him up with about six or seven clearances and 12 so we'll put time into him um wind taker will sort of match him up and try and quieten him you know his first half was blistering and he got managed pretty well in the second half we'll keep working with him um on how to manage the to run with uh we keep working on the rest of our group and how to manage that situation and what we can do to help but it's all part of his learning they can't say they weren't warned r l even said which player he's going to put on him was it the tag was that the the thing that held him up the it was brilliant it great coaching from Ross and excellent from wi Hager and a credit to Harley Reed that he's getting tagged this year I got some sympathy for him but when I spoke about his work rate and that being a focus for him this is why because you're going to get tagged and you have to work through and this is his record after halftime essentially he drops away in his last quarters he's been really quiet so that will be the next Evolution how do I work and prepare myself so I can have Marcus Bonelli like last quarters now he's he's a mile away from Marcus bonell in his career in terms of where he's at but that is the next Evolution and he's just going to have to cop that team see how vulnerable he is to that and you would be mad to play West Coast and not go after Harley Reeds significantly physically so Harley Reeds out of the rising star so is Sam Darcy and that brings us to the house of Hutch I love it kills me every time utterly ridiculous but I'll play along anyway the rising star needs a complete reset it's one of the great Awards in football but it's fundamentally broken in its eligibility criteria and judging and here's the three things that are needed to fix it and fix it into next year one the definition of Fest needs to be completely changed these days you can be suspended U you robbed out for things beyond your control it's going to take the best kids out by average two or three or four eligable kids are going to be suspended they're more inclined to make a mistake because they're young so we' got to fix that definition put a higher barrier on it and make sure that the pull the players to it must be first year players we are in a situation this year with Dempsey who's an outstanding young player he's been in the system three years has gone through the dong Factory played a bunch of reserves games and might out witht the first year Sam daring is better prepared than Harley red is a first year if if Harley red had not won the rising star this year it would have been a travesty uh if he was eligible and three and I'm sorry K it's not aimed at you or any of your wonderful colleagues but no more media identities as judges it just doesn't work you're forced to sit and comment in situations like yesterday on the Sunday Footy Show where you're asked about your view of how fasal or otherwise it is without the two best players in um others have said they like tall players small players we're a running commentary it's a wagering product it needs to be that's that's the biggest issue for me the fact that it's a wagering product I agree about the media selectors and it's the all Australian selectors what about the all the all Australian team having media Iden I'm less I think the the catchman of players who could win it is so small that you're so much more exposed to the views of those who are commoning dayto day on the game and it has to be first year players because we've seen some brilliant first year players not win because of seconde players coming through I mean no no disrespect to leis Taylor but that's a classic example was one of many before we go to the break but I don't agree about the feris there are other awards for first year players to win I don't think they if they've been suspended tough before we go to the break a key AFL resignation with Kylie Rogers moving this afternoon Caro to the VRC as its new chief executive yeah this is a bit of a shock to Andrew Dylan and his administration so his his executive is looking relatively inexperienced now and I think that's going to be a problem for the AFL and the new commercial boss of the AFL has is a key appointment now for Andrew Dylan I kyly Rogers my understanding is was certainly on Richmond's long list I think he was contacted by the Richmond Head Hunters um he also looked I think at the Hawthorne job last year so um he's gone to another industry so everyone who went for the top AFL job who didn't get it has now left their jobs Brendan gal knocked back a big job at the AFL going to Tasmania of course Travis old gone to the Grand Prix and now Carly Rogers to the VRC and coup for the VRC which have a way to look at it for the tuns of kly Rogers
