what's up Tailgators you're in the booth with tailgate Nate today welcome back to my channel and today I'm going to be giving you my biggest takeaways from week zero normally in this video I do five takeaways but because there just wasn't that many games on I'm going to go through my top four things that I took away from week zero and I know there were not that many games played but there are already some big big takeaways that I gathered at least from this past weekend and this past college football Saturday it is so good to have college football back and if you are as big of a college football nerd as I am you've got to hit that subscribe button and you've got to ring the bell because you have to know when I upload videos I'm going to be posting a lot during this college football season but just thank you so much for helping to support this channel by watching this video and really doing anything else you can to interact to this channel because it all helps to support what I life not only as a YouTuber but as a sports media student and in a iring Sports media professional and with all that being said let's dive on in talk about my biggest takeaways from week zero and the biggest thing is just an overall AR arching theme usually I like to do one or two just kind of big themes that I gathered from this past week and this past week well is this going to be a theme for the rest of the season we saw a ton of comebacks a ton of upsets are those going to be themes for the 2024 college football season some of you out there may be saying boy I hope so that'd make it a more fun season look it's already already going to be a fun season even if comebacks and upsets aren't really necessarily a big theme this season this season is still going to be really really fun but I mean at at the FBS level of course you had Georgia Tech upsetting Florida State we'll talk a lot more about that later some really good comebacks that you see on the outside two pictures there SMU coming back to beat Nevada Montana State down 17 twice to come back and beat New Mexico so we already have an FCS win over an FBS program more on all those games later but even if you go back to the FCS level and yes I did watch some FCS football here you had Tarleton State almost get upset by MCN a program that only had one win last year and it was due to a forfeit uh you had North Fork State almost knock off Florida A&M a team that I believe was ranked if not they were very close to being ranked in the preseason FCS pole that was only a one-point win for the Florida A&M Rattlers and what was just a very very good game and overall I mean you just had some really fun football this week lots of comebacks uh again the big upset being Georgia Tech beating Florida State if those are going to be themes for the college football season I mean I'm pushing all my chips to the center of the table I mean I'm going to be doing that already you know everything's going to be laid out in front of me and I'm just really excited to watch this college football season unfold but especially if we're going to be seeing some crazy comebacks some wild upset in these last minute game-winning walk-off fashion type games I mean you got me hooked already there were only I think between the FBS and FCS level like seven or eight games they all were exciting in their own way and I just was so happy to have football back this week but that is the big theme from week zero lots of good comebacks and lots of upsets we're going to be talking about two comebacks and one upset here in this video again as I focus on the FBS level so we're going to dive on into talking about well the first FCS win over an FBS opponent missed opportunities are going to down the New Mexico Lobos in their first game of the season and the first game under Bronco mendenhal now this was a game in which all reality New Mexico really should have won Montana State came in here as I believe a 12 to3 maybe even 14 point favorite they were in the teens I do believe actually I'm thinking about it but regardless Montana state was a double- digit favorite coming into this game they were ranked preseason 4 in the FCS pole in New Mexico just felt really disrespected and look they came out here with a point to prove and I got to tell you I was actually really impressed with this New Mexico team Devon dampier played really really well at quarterback not only with his arm but with his legs at times as well Eli Sanders seemed to fit into this offense really well the defense came up with a couple really big stops in fact two fumble returns for touchdowns here in this game but again it is the the lack of just capitalizing on your key opportunities which is what down New Mexico here in this game I think they were one for three on field goals in this game uh they might have even been one for four and I mean I can't really blame them at points the wind was absolutely whipping in New Mexico this week and they had gotten Windstorm warnings and everything like that but still regardless you failed to capitalize on those opportunities there were a couple other opportunities that you had such as I mean obviously the misfield goals as I've said both of which came in that second half but also I mean just some misplays and some miscues and that really killed the Lobos here in this game but the big story is on the side of Montana state they're down 17 points twice twice they were down 17 to nothing came back to score 14 unanswered before New Mexico pushed it back double digits before the half then they were down 3114 shortly after the first half started again another fumble return touchdown on the first drive of the second half for Montana State they let New Mexico take the football back into the end zone and Montana State just looked dead well they scored with uh albe it would you take a look at that they scored with 10 seconds left and uh New Mexico well tried the whole lateral thing and there was a costly penalty in there and it just didn't work out Montana State recovers a fumble and that's how you get your first FCS win over an FBS opponent in 2024 and I mean look you could even say that missed opportunities were factors in other games here no much so more than this one does that mean the Bronco men and Hall era is going to be is going to start off not so well New Mexico's not going to have that great of record I mean wouldn't I wouldn't be too sure again this is the first game teams are only going to improve from here New Mexico's going to capitalize on the opportunities later in the season that they were that they missed in this game and I think overall New Mexico's going to going to be able to learn from this experience Bronco menal has been doing this for a long time he's going to have the right message for his guys and I think New Mexico could end up being fairly competitive this year there is a lot of stuff that I saw that I liked but a huge comeback win for Montana state gets the first FCS win of the season I was really really excited to watch the SMU Mustangs because I had them being a team that I thought was going to be pretty competitive in the ACC well they have to improve their play from from last week especially on the discipline front Okay let's talk about this SMU was just not disciplined in that game at all in fact there were ejections there were fights I think even an SMU player the ejection happened because an SMU player spit on a Nevada player which I mean come on like be classy you just can't do that but I mean let me read you this 11 penalties for 125 yards that is what SMU had yesterday in their win over Nevada now again I say win they were able to come back it looked like they were dead in the water but RJ Maryland the guy that is going to be on the right hand side of your screen where number 82 he's got the football there was absolutely Sensational for the Mustangs in this game eight catches for 162 yards and one touchdown that helped SMU come back to win this game 29 to 24 Nevada just couldn't do anything on their final drive but again we'll talk more about SMU here in just a little bit but I do got to tell you first and foremost I was actually really impressed with Nevada in this game I did not think they were going to be or I should say I didn't think they were going to show up as well as they did uh really really impressed with uh Brendan Lewis at times at the quarterback position of course things that he can improve on there but was really impressed with his ability to get out of the pocket and run Shawn dollars and Savon red each had a couple of moments there as well where I thought hey they looked really good and this Nevada defense really well coached and honestly if everything went perfectly right for Nevada they probably should have picked off Preston Stone and Kevin Jennings at least four or five times here in this game the reality of it was you only got one pick but let's go back to Preston stone for a minute he made a lot of bad throws here in this game and for a quarterback that only threw six picks last year and was so so good for this Mustang program you need to see better from him especially if SMU is going to be a team that can contend in the ACC because they have enough talent to do it and I think they provve that throughout points in this game Preston Stone especially in that second half really woke up got it together and started to deliver on some really really big throws even kenning Jennings uh when when he came in and played he ended up playing fairly uh decently in that first half as well brashard Smith gave you a really good game on the ground and you just have a lot of other Talent uh and especially that Talent defensively to where look it struggled in this game but it was a really good unit last year with a lot of good returning pieces things are going to get better for the SMU Mustangs but there are a lot of reasons to be concerned here entering uh uh there next week again you still got TCU coming up here on the schedule and then you got to run through a whole gaet of ACC competition not going to be easy for the SMU Mustangs a team that I still really like but they got to get more from Preston Stone and they must clean up those discipline issues because they could have killed them in this Nevada game not only with picks but with penalties as well of course though we have to talk about the biggest game of the weekend and it was the first game that kicked off the college football season the air lingis classic in Dublin Ireland saw the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and a whole bunch of streaks Florida state had going they knock off a top 10 opponent and my biggest takeaway from that one is look I've been saying it pretty much all prediction season but Georgia Tech if everything goes well for them this year they are a real ACC sleeper and I will tell you why here in a minute but there also is that Florida state has some work to do but let's talk about the winning side of this first Georgia Tech is such a ACC sleeper it is ridiculous in fact now uh they might even be ranked in the very next poll that comes out I believe after week one I don't know if one is going to come out here this this next week just the one team playing right but I do believe that Georgia Tech has the possibility to be ranked you have to find out if I'm going to rank him after week one again I'm not going to release a new poll because only one ranked team played obviously they're going to drop not whole much point to me but Georgia Tech was absolutely outstanding and look you came into this game Thinking H well Georgia Tech you know they got to be able to win the line of scrimmage to win this game and maybe they had the advantage to do it offensively but defense defensively it's a defense that didn't get a whole lot of pass rush to the quarterback last year it's a rush defense that was absolutely awful last season and all of those were different here in this game the pass rush for Georgia Tech was absolutely outstanding they got back uh one sack seven tackles for loss a whole bunch of quarterback pressures on dju they forced him into some really bad throws and even though they didn't force a turnover in this game Georgia Tech had such a better pass rush their Rush defense was exceptionally better and they did win the line of scrimmage you kind of figured they were going to win it offensively they just got a lot of good players with Jamal Haynes uh Chad Alexander And even hannes King ability to get outside of the pocket and run and that's a very experienced offensive line when you lose a bunch of defensive line players like Florida state did you're going to have the advantage there on the offensive front that's exactly what Georgia Tech had here in this game but when you go back and you take a look at the other uh the other side of the ball I mean the defense was really good for Georgia Tech as well right again IID mentioned uh that uh pressure was good and I want to talk about hannes King for a second while the stat line is not going to blow you away he was 11 for 16 for 146 yards no touchdowns no picks 15 carries on the ground for 54 yards none of that is going to be absolutely outstanding but he made some big time throws some absolutely huge plays and how about the kicker Aiden Burr we did not have a college kicker situation here but he missed I believe it was a 51 y earlier in the game he pushed it wide to the left and this one he absolutely absolutely nailed there was no question that it was going in Georgia Tech walks off Florida State watch out for the yellow jackets this year they got a pretty tough road I still of course they have to play Georgia I think they have NC State they have Clemson they have Syracuse they have Louisville on the schedule it's a really hard Road for this Georgia Tech Team to get into an ACC Championship game but after everything they showed in that game they can get it done now let's talk about the losing side for a little bit Florida state has got a lot of work to do I was really really excited to watch dju play and I honestly just wasn't that impressed he didn't push the ball down field that much I think he threw maybe five or six passes that were more than 10 yards down field and he didn't have a lot of success with those passes now albe it dju yes I know there a lot of jokes going around he didn't play well so on and so forth but the reality is it's going to get better for dju and especially at the end of the game and in a couple of huge fourth down situations he came through for this team on a couple of really big time throws now obviously again I've said all or I guess all segment long talking about this game that Georgia Tech won the line of scrimmage made it really hard for Florida State to run the football they got a lot of running back Talent back there that is going to get better but apart from that first drive they just couldn't really run the ball on this Georgia Tech Team Georgia Tech really improved as the game went along and by no means is Florida State out of the college football playoff conversation maybe in a four team year this might be a game where you look at and say say yikes it is going to be really really hard and Flor State's going to need a lot of help to get into the college football playoff the reality of it is it's one loss yes it's in conference makes your job a little bit harder Florida state is nowhere near out of college football playoff conversation and I think things are going to get better for this FSU team this season but again they got some pretty difficult games this year as well they still have Clemson what if Florida really emerges this season and a couple other tough games on the schedule as well but Georgia Tech with the Irish upset the luck of the yellow jackets prevails and that's to do it for my week zero takeaways the videos will be kind of around this long and I'll shorten things here but again every week I'll give you my top five takeaways from the previous week's action and then we'll dive on into coverage of next week coming up next is going to be all Al be it it's a very belated video but I will give you my official pre-season college football playoff predictions remember to play hard but tailgate harder and I'll see all you guys in the next video goodbye
