science degree in information systems please join me in welcoming Mr Michael delusa thank you hello and good evening to the Le Moine College faculty and administrators to the assembled family and friends and of course to my fellow post-graduate graduates and to those around the world joining us via live stream tonight's event will be presented with limited commercial Interruption my name is Mike DeLucia Le Mo college class of 1993 and 2024 as a returning student who has been around the block a few times I hope this evening to congratulate you to perhaps inspire you to offer what guidance and such wisdom as I can and so congratulations graduates we did it we've completed our studies in tumultuous times but for all of us here today there's clearly also been hope hope that tomorrow can be better that we can be better that we can make it better right otherwise why bother with such an intensive and demanding program of study I urge you to hold on to that hope and to stay focused on your goals keep in mind why you pursued an advanced degree it may be required in your field or a path to advancement it may be a love of learning a deep abiding desire to better understand ourselves in the world around us perhaps it was The Lure of the coveted puffy hat whatever the reason we've accomplished this goal at least from here some of us will head off in exciting new directions While others will continue on more or less the same trajectory but possessed of fresh knowledge improved critical thinking skills and a deep pervasive hatred of group projects however it is that you'll be getting your fins wet there's much more to come across 30 years of professional Endeavors I've been student and teacher worker manager executive businessman familyman mentor and mentee if any of those roles make you think perhaps this fellow has some worthwhile advice I offer the following for your consideration always find ways to add value in your work if you let AI do your job it won't be long before AI is doing your job never fall into the Trap of considering yourself to be indispensable to your employer I offer the reminder that Apple once fired Steve Jobs yes they did later hire him back but than he was after all Steve Jobs take your vacation time all of your vacation time no one will remember whatever brief and minor inconvenience was caused by your absence but the time to yourself to recharge to spend with friends and family you can't ever get that back it's long been a saying of mine that that which gets measured gets done this is true in managing projects and in business and in health care and in life prioritize set reasonable due dates accomplish your objectives reflect and then repeat interestingly I've been using that saying for so long I actually thought I'd coined it alas probably not it's more likely that I heard it somewhere internalized it and then forgot which brings me to my next bit of advice own your mistakes not just because they're a path to learning though they are not just because it's likely they'll come to light regardless though it is but because it's the right thing to do and I think you'll find that doing the right thing consistently will have an impact not just on you but on everyone you encounter and as you wish that others would do to you do so to them by nourishing others with your work your generosity or your care you nourish your own soul receive that which is given in gratitude be magnanimous in giving to others breathe you've got this whatever it is breathe if nothing else it is preferable to not breathing and considerably more sustainable take time to reflect and appreciate appreciate yourself for what you've accomplished appreciate those around you who've lightened your load consider what was well done and where there's opportunity for improvement the practice of lean management teaches us to embrace Kaizen or continuous Improvement those of us graduating tonight have embraced this Doctrine and at least this aspect of Our Lives don't let this be a Finish Line rather the continuation of your improvement keep learning keep growing keep improving yourself and those around you never stop that the world needs you the world needs us the readers the critical thinkers the caregivers and the healers people who have trained themselves to question the easy answers to ask for proof the leaders the diligent workers who have demonstrated that they can translate their passions into results embody the spirit of your Graduate Studies let that document that you'll hang on the wall remind you of what you've learned and how much more there is to know you know how to think you know how to adapt you know how to change now go show the others thank you thank you Michael at this time I invite Dr Renee Downey Hart professor of practice for management and Leadership and Human Resource Management to come to the podium you can wait is this good to introduce our commencement speaker now hello everyone and what a great night isn't it are you happy happy me too um I I I was delighted when they called me a couple weeks ago and said could you introduce Evelyn Ingram because Evelyn and I go back a few years we called it to our carrier days but you know um and I'm I'm delighted to be able to do that but I think you know who she is you've seen her on television on the news more than once she's a dolphin she's a force for change she believes in tomorrow and she even believes in castles in the city of Syracuse yes yes okay Evelyn Ingram did indeed go to work for a grocery store a few years ago right and she never looked back and I was asked to tell you more about her tonight so what did I do I went over to her social media page many speakers would say oh dear when they hear somebody introducing them but you're okay I got you okay I got you but I will tell you some of the things I found okay I found a wife a mom a sister a friend a creator of wonderful things for our city I found Evelyn at fun risers dancing at the Royal me Gala cheering Go Red For Women and reading to school children I found her sorting boxes so families could have Christmas in their kitchens and under their trees and I found her selling chocolate for scholarship funds for women of color she is also a woman who cooks at the Tucker Missionary Baptist Church and I bet that's come some kind of dinner right when that's happening um she and her husband Chino and you're up here with the whole family give a hello I I love it that you guys are all here um she and her husband Chino I lost my place but I'll be right there I know I just you know okay than reimagine I the provos is coaching me thank you um um are reimagining this outside creating opportunity with a shiny new vision in a beautiful old church I also saw Evelyn this is some of the stuff I just pull out dancing Chino and dancing and she celebrated e su Athletics that's her other alma mater wearing um an orange jacket an orange skirt and an orange vest so Dr lamir do you have a key to the bookstore I do could we get some gear later so we got some green hanging in that closet is that oh green and gold okay as long as we got that going on okay Evelyn my friend in all seriousness one of your quotes uh about working at Wegman's that grocery store as as she called it um said that you love working there because they let you be who you are and I'm going to say to you that who you are is exactly what we need in the world so my friend Devin come tell us more okay what an awesome introduction and I will say Dr Hart I do have on a green dress under this robe and I have my yellow rhinestone sandal so I think I'm in the right room right so I I'll say this uh one of the things that Dr Hart shared is that I want to be me and every opportunity I'm given I always ask you know who you're asking so I'm going to be me so today in order for me to be me I want to make sure that I come from uh a background of church and in the church I go to we make ourselves known so that means you may have to be vocal and respond to what I'm saying is that okay am all right all right is that okay graduates this should be an awesome great time for you to celebrate that's right so I just want to first um share that I want to thank uh all of you for being here today all of the the people in the room parents let me hear from you parents family friends I mean this room is full I don't know if I'm hearing enough family friends of course the graduates [Applause] and I also want to make sure that I acknowledge Dr lamura because she leads with Integrity she leads with Humanity she leads with creativity and she is the only president that was going to work with me to get a dental office and a Wegman that sounds odd right but only Dr the mura but I there's a backstory but I'll say that for another time but I appreciate the leadership that she has shown both to you as students I know that you are excited about what she's done of course I want to acknowledge our faculty faculty here are with us today but I must make sure that I recognize my circle I hope all of you have a circle and I have representatives of my circle here with me tonight I have what I call my sister girl Circle toana Montgomery and Jackie Wright who were here with me today thank you so much for your support I also have someone who I call is like a mother uh Mrs Marriott po who has served our community Faithfully she's here with her grandson Isaiah she wanted to give him the experience of being in a college uh setting and of course I want to acknowledge my own son who I am proud of him and I am proud proud of the person that he is becoming and finally and not lastly but most importantly I want want to acknowledge my husband Chino who was here with me who is the beat of my heart who supports me who lifts me who pushes me I appreciate you babe and thank you so much for being in my [Applause] life and when I thought about today you may not recognize it but today is a significant milestone in history of civil rights and education cuz guess what today is the seventh th anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court decision Brown vers Board of Education so May 17th 1954 they said that separating blacks and whites in public school settings is unconstitutional and look at this room today look at this room today look at it and look at me a black girl from Long Island New York who is both public and private educated private school educated standing before you as a commit as a commencement speaker and I am glad and glad to be part of this significant moment as we celebrate that so I'm going to what I can in a short and brief time speak into the lives of our awesome graduates of Le Mo college class of 2024 all right we got some dolphins in the room so as I was actually reflecting on what was I going to talk about today I started to think you know I wanted something that would be connect all of us something that would not um distinguish any one group so I started to think about something that was pretty simple and I thought about talking about something that we actually we all needed uh something that we all have been exposed to something that's vital to our well-being and many of you may know that I work for Wegman so you're probably like is she going to talk about [Music] food so if you said that graduates you have failed your last test CU I'm not talking about food tonight even though I hope everybody here is Wegman Shoppers hands yes all right I had to get that plug in but I'm actually um even though food is all the things I shared I'm actually going to talk about music don't You Love music you I mean I don't know it's just something about music it just puts me into another heads space it takes me into another realm it uplifts me it makes me smile make does it make you smile it makes me feel good and whatever genre of music that you like R&B gospel those are my favorites Opera Jazz hip-hop Rock reae country whatever is your preference don't you just love listening to music because it takes you to a place that sometime you need to just Escape so I just love to listen and hear the notes and the sounds of music because it really just it uplifts my spirit and it puts me in a good mood so I'll share that I am I would say I'm musically inclined I do sing a little bit here and there but I also as much as I love listening to music I actually also used to play the clarinet and you couldn't tell me nothing me playing that clarinet I actually my my friend who played the flute we were as they say if you're in a band or orchestra we were the first chair so we had the first chairs which me that which meant that we were kind of the best in that particular section and um I had aspirations of playing in a band gramlin State University which is a historically black and college and university and they have one of the most awesome bands that you can imagine just maybe maybe close to the Dolphins band I'll say maybe maybe close but I wanted to play in that band but it wasn't um in the cars for me to do that but I recall being young and playing and having the band concerts and the orchestra concerts and my parents coming to hear me play and me and my friends we were just like excited we were happy to have our parents in the room and after the con we run outside to see our parents and they would say you know oh y'all did a great job oh was awesome oh we loved it you know and how great we were and how great we sounded and actually I I really really believed them I did at that time I'm like yep we did it we worked it out but after hearing my own son play in his band concerts and his orchestra concerts no son not you cuz you play great I realized that my parents may not have been absolutely telling the truth honestly because uh some of that stuff it it don't sound the greatest um it could be actually a bunch of noise but you're learning and when I looked at it um even though we may have didn't sound as good as we thought and we may not have been as good as we thought but we practiced and we attended rehearsals and we worked hard so that we could be the best musicians that we can be so even though there were many times we were just making noise but to us it was great music and in that process of playing music we actually also learned we learned a lot we learned that how to read music we learned that you have to pay attention to how long a note is held or how loud it's going to be played and we also learned that there are different musical note Styles and one of those Styles if you know music is staccato and staccato means that you sp that the notes are very sharp and short you know that staccato there's another term that's called piano and piano means you play pretty quietly and there's even another term that says pianis which is real real quiet but then there's another term that they say that's loud Forte and then fortisimo which is very very loud there are also two concepts called de Crescendo which means that you start soft and you gra get louder and there's also in a um I'm sorry you gradually get softer that's de Crescendo but then cresendo is increasing in sound you start soft and then you gradually get louder and we learned that every song has a musical note style and every song also has a climax or a chorus and that's when the music just gets real good I mean that's the chorus that's the call this you vibing you know your hand hands are clapping your fingers are popping your feet feet are stomping that's when the music gets good and you probably all are wondering now why in the world is she telling us this about music we are sitting here we want to get our degrees we're Fanning what in the world does my graduation ceremony have to do with music well when I think about it I'm going to actually use the concept of cresendo as a metaphor to your college experience because in cresendo it really is a gradual climax you go from note to note one note at a time so if I'm using that as a metaphor to what your college experience has been your college experience has been a crescendo a gradual rise filled with challenges you've had some triumphs you've had some moments of profound growth and there were times I if I would recall I'm sure that in the beginning of your college experience you may have been piano or quiet because you wasn't sure what was on the other side but then as you got through the program and continued and progressed you started to sing Forte and Loud because you were like look I know what I'm doing I'm confident I know how to do it I know where to do it so I share that in this journey called life you're going to have some de crescendos and some crescendos you're going to have some lows you're going to have some highs some valleys some mountaintops but you've learn to navigate these harmonies and the dissensions you're going to have good times and challenging times and I'm sure you've dealt with that on this campus but you've dealt with it with Grace and with determination and you've actually found your Rhythm if I had to say because you've been dis discovering your passions and laying the groundwork for what is to come but with each passing semester you embrace the challenges before you each one adding some depth and richness to your Symphony now today as you stand here on the cusp of graduating and getting your master's degree in whatever discipline you have chosen that is an accomplishment and I urge you to reflect on the crescendos that brought you here those moments those countless hours of study the late nights in the library juggling full-time jobs and fames spouses children those moments that you may have had doubt those moments that you may have had Triumph but each note each experience has contributed to the Masterpiece or the symphony which is your college graduation and I'll share that every Crescendo has a Peak and today getting this degree that may be your educational climax you may say this is as far as you want to go in formal education but for many of you you may have other aspirations or other crescendos that you're striving for so today this is the preparation for the next symy in Symphony in your life but but but but but please remember the cresendo is not the end of the music it's just a transition to something greater and you have something greater in store for you so as you venture forth into the world know that the cresendo that you are obtaining today has prepared you for challenges and opportunities that lie ahead embrace the crinos yet to come with the same fervor and determination that have brought you to this moment so today graduates this is your Crescendo moment it's time for you to stand up be heard in your Forte voice it's your cresendo moment to embrace the present it's your Crescendo moment to conquer the challenges it's your Crescendo moment to merge as a Victor for you are a champion you are a winner you are born to succeed but wait wait wait wait the best part of this is that guess what you are the conductor so it's your life and you own it you hold a baton in your hand so whatever way you wave that baton is the direction that your life will take and I would be remiss if I didn't share with you coming from as a preacher's daughter that if you trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not unto your own understanding but if you acknowledge Him He Shall direct all of your past and I have to say you have to have the faith to believe is there anyone here who has the Matthew 17 Faith which says if you have the faith the size of a grain of a mustard seed you shall say to that mountain move you shall say to that mountain move and that M Mountain will move because nothing shall be impossible of you now we know that there will be setbacks and there will be some decrescendos but if you believe in what the Bible says and don't get dismayed but don't you be weary and well-doing for in due season you shall reap if you faint not and if I was in the church somebody would say amen amen so finally I'm going to say to you make some noise be heard we know that noise sometime is defined as disruption and noise is defined as unwanted and something that may interfere but I'm going to be like Congressman John Lewis who turned the coin good trouble and I'm going to turn the go I'm going to coin the term good noise noise that me make people stand up and notice you noise that makes people step aside when you enter the room whether that room is a board room or a surgery room or any kind of room you enter your presence is known so I want to hear you make some good noise Make yourself be known make yourself be be heard for this is your Crescendo moment say it loud Crescendo so today is merely the beginning of a symphony of possibilities so as you enter into the world and Venture there don't be afraid to raise your voice to make yourself heard to advocate for what you believe in make good noise about helping others make good noise for the dreams that you hold dear make good noise for those things that ignite your passions make good noise for the communities you will uplift make some good noise for the people you will help along the way class of 2024 I need you to make some good noise Make some good noise Crescendo Crescendo Crescendo cresendo this is your Crescendo moment make some good noise [Applause] congratulations thank you Evelyn for that very inspiring and energetic and insightful set of remarks we have one final message for our graduates please direct your attention to the screen
