Lee carsley has stated that he will not sing England's national anthem when he oversees his first match as interim head coach against the Republic of Ireland this Saturday carsley born in Birmingham but capped 40 times for Ireland through his grandmother will head back to Dublin after stepping in for Gareth Southgate for at least the beginning of the Nations League campaign the 50-year-old who led England's under 21s to European Glory last year and has been part of the faas coaching set up since 2015 said he won't change his pre-match habit of not singing God Save the King because he prefers to focus on the football this was always something I struggled with while playing for Ireland said carsley who disclosed last week at his unveiling that he had informal talks about managing Ireland earlier this year the gap between the warm-up walking onto the pitch and the delay with the anthems it's something I've never done I've always focused on the game and my first actions I found during that time my mind could wander I've always been focused on the football and that's something I've carried into my coaching we had the Anthem with the under 21s too and I'm in a Zone by then I'm thinking about how the opposition will set up and our first movements I have the utmost respect for both anthems and fully appreciate how much they mean to both Nations I respect that deeply England Captain Harry Kane who also has Irish Roots acknowledged that Dean rice and Jack greish might face a hostile reception if selected given their decision to switch allegiance to England after playing for Ireland's youth teams and in Rice's case also at senior level everyone follows their own career path and they started briefly with Ireland before continuing with England so they're mature enough to handle that said Kane it will be a tough game the atmosphere will be intense we expect it to be a bit hostile but that's not unusual for an away game my my grandparents were Irish but with my career progressing through the England youth setup and then the 21s and the senior team Ireland was never something I really considered or was offered Kane is poised to earn his 99th cap with a chance to reach his Century against Finland on Tuesday the Bayern Munich Striker had a challenging Euro 2024 despite adding three goals to his International tally bringing it to 66 Kane was substituted during the semi-final against the Netherlands and again after 61 minutes of the final against Spain he admitted his performances weren't up to his usual standards but believes he can Thrive under carsley there was plenty of talk about me and my fitness during the Euros but I felt fine physically Kan said did the games go as I'd hoped no not really but I think a lot of us underperformed individually we did remarkably well to reach where we did that was most ly down to our team spirit and the chemistry we've built over the years but when things don't go as planned people always look for something to blame from my perspective I've come back in a good place and I've started the season strong with Ali Watkins with drawing and carsley leaving Ivan Tony out of the squad England doesn't have another number nine the Netherlands coach Ronald colan recently shut the door on Steven Bern's International career following his move to the Saudi Pro Le league but carsley expressed a desire to see Tony play before making any decisions as an interim coach I don't think I can definitively rule anyone in or out he said it would be really interesting to see Ivan play observe the level Tempo and standard we have access to the games so I'll be closely watching his progress out there it would be great to watch a live game and get a feel for the atmosphere and Pace because sometimes you miss that on video but yes he's certainly not ruled out we have to be cautious I have a perception of the football over there but I haven't seen it in person so I think it would be premature to rule someone in or out
