the Washington commanders have signed Martavis Bryant and are working Johan Dawson in the slot so what is the deal with the w wide receiver situation in Washington DC we're gonna look at The Good the Bad and the Ugly within Martavis Bryant signing next on Washington football Maniacs what's good everybody it's your boy Brandon Scott again I appreciate you guys rocking with us over here Washington football maniac uh definitely real quick before we get into tonight's content if you are not a member of the Washington football man act definitely definitely consider becoming a member because we have a lot of good content coming your way with the season coming up preseason game number two is on Saturday so we're gonna do a lot of recap with that and again we have a lot of good content not only for the season coming up but a lot of good interviews so again definitely like subscribe hit that button man so you know when these dope videos come out so again the Washington commanders have signed Martavis Bryant yes Martavis Bryant who hasn't played football since 2018 in the NFL he has been signed and Johan Dawson is working the slot so I'm going to look at The Good the Bad and the Ugly for from the Martavis Bryant signings so let's get into the the good real quick now looking at Martavis Bryant um 64 again he has not played since 2018 last time he played in NFL game in 2018 obviously last football was with the XFL or the UFL my bad the um unified Football League um so take a look at him um 32 years old had 14 touchdown receptions in the first two seasons after the Pittsburgh still has selected him in the fourth round of the 2014 draft but he's had his issues with League the league substance abuse policy um the NFL suspended him in 2016 and after two more seasons included one with the Raiders and um at the time they were the Oakland Raiders he received an indefinite suspension after another violation in8 so but we're looking at the good real quick what what are the good dynamics of this move well Johan Dawson again they are working him in a slot I said this in the beginning of the off season I said this at the end of last season I said it time and time again that I believe that Jan Dawson is best served as a slot receiver five foot 11 you need a guy with some size off of of Terry mclen and that's why I thought that with this year's draft there were a lot of good wide re wide receiver prospects that I thought that the commanders should have picked up now overall and and I know before SM system I know we got Luke mcaffry but Again Luke mcaffry is a guy who is looked at more of a slight Receiver right now it could have be something to change we'll see but right now Luke mcaffry is looking more as a slot receiver and I think that with reverting Jan Dawson back to the slot you give Luke mcaffrey especially if you add in Dei Brown showing you know progress here I know it's one preseason game but he has shown progress in training camp and the first preseason game and you you know he very well could pick up that fourth spot Luke mcaffry give him some time to develop you know right now we're a team that we're not really slated to compete but we're also not gonna be trash either so when you got a guy like Luke mcaffry who I think is a really good Prospect I think that you know it was a really good move picking him up in the draft we don't necessarily have to put him in the fire we G let him develop get some reps here and there I definely you know give him as many reps as you can in preseason but you don't have to feel the need to put him out into the fire you know um so those are some other Dynamics look at but look at that M uh Martavis Bryant 64 so he does add some size opposite of T mclen if indeed they want to make him the number two guy now um he's he's obviously he obviously is a guy who has talent you know uh when he was with Pittsburg even um limited action with with Oakland were there at the time they were the Oakland Raiders he showed some potential now is he the answer well well we're gonna slide into the bad which is he hasn't played football since 2018 and you know how much can you really expect a guy who's 32 years old hasn't played the you know at the NFL level since 2018 to be a complimentary pece off C laoren I just I I don't know how much how you know how much expectations you can really have about that I mean like I said he has potential but then you know we you know in the realm of potential you're not talking about a guy we just picked up in the draft you're not talking about a guy who's a young Prospect who maybe didn't pan out their last stop and maybe this is change of seran move no look at that guy 32 years old so how much can you really expect the guy to contribute and how much pressure do can you see him realistically take off ter Malone mcloren and I I'm G say not much he's 32 and yes he's gonna get some reps and prees and I think he very well should but a guy who again is 32 and like I said I'm about to hit 40 so I'm not gonna see act like 32 is old but in in the realm of sports it is especially in in um positions like wide receiver to a certain degree that that that trend is changing a little bit at this wide receiv receiv position but running backs you know you know is another position where once you hit 32 man you I mean you're not looked at as a future at the position at at your perspective team anymore you're looking at as a as a veteran who hopefully you're trying to catch on one one year twoyear contract at that point you know and so yes there's potential with him yes he has size and I think that you know if he shows that he can hold down the number two spot I'm all for it but there's a lot of questions he's hasn't played football at the NFL level again since 2018 so I think you have to kind of stem your expectations that how much of an impact can you really have and like you said it's not a bad move but then you get into the ugly part right The Good the Bad and now you got the ugly I mean he's had issues with substance abuse now do I think that marijuana is the devil no I think that it should be legalized on a national level and for the reason for that is that one you're going to curb a lot of drug sales coming over from places like Mexico or other places and two it's going to take a lot of pressure off the opioid epidemic so I think that marijuana is definitely something that could be legalized on a national point now obviously there's not a political channel so I'm going to kind of divert from that but but saying that you looking at leagues like the NFL the NBA I mean the NBA doesn't even test for it anymore and you you're looking at pretty much across the board most leagues aren't even testing for it and aren't even penalizing people for using marijuana to deal with pain so when you look at the realm of football um the problems that football in the NFL in particular has had with opioids and issues the players had why they're employed by the NFL and while they you know go into the next chapter of Life as a cilian you know you can look at the situation with marijuana and or substance abuse issues with Martavis Brian say well he's young guy who was using the substance that you know is not harmful and has a taboo that's not warranted fair enough but then it was still illegal and that come say you know illegal is illegal whether you know no matter how you try to twist it he should not have you know used that even though it was used widespread in NFL level so am I going to knock him too hard for marijuana use no but it's still illegal you got caught you know move on so um like I said to me that's the ugly you know issues you know off the field you know when you're trying to solidify an atmosphere of culture and what you know especially first year coaching staff you know first year GM you know new owner going into his first you know um or his second year as ownership man you know you're trying to you're trying to to solidify a culture here and do you neula to bring in the guy who is synonymous with breaking the rules I I don't know I mean I I I I would believe that you know and I hope to believe that the organization whether it was a coach of Staff general manager or even ownership they vetted him they talked to him they saw where's his that so I think they they definitely did the due diligence before making this move because again you know it's very risky to sign a 32 year old receiver who hasn't played football at the NFL level since 2018 who's got issu with substance abuse now again I get it marijuana and I'm not I I don't even have a bad opinion about marijuana but it goes back to the rules or the rules but on the flip side of that coin you best believe that they vetted him they talked to him they saw where his at and obviously there a new landscape when it comes to that so maybe they looked at it like look you took your L you Haven played ball since 201 2018 so he definitely took his L and maybe you know obviously he's maybe personally Mart is looking at it as a new beginning you a fresh start so um those are some Dynamics to look at like I said very interesting in wide receiver situation now look at at the signing of Martavis Bryant which I like I said curb your expectations 6'4 he does add size he does add some skill to the other side of Terry mclen AKA scarier Terry but you know looking at this wide receiver situation um do we necessarily need him and how much can he really impact this team I mean is he even looked at as a guy who can stick with the team because we're going to pull up the death charge but I mean we all know that right now the commanders have a lot of talent wide receiver but the biggest thing right now is and this is why I said that we needed to Target a bigger more physical receiver in draft you know Luke mcaffry doesn't exactly fit that Moe even though I think he's gonna be successful here in DC he's gonna be a scrappy wide receiver who best served at the slot um but right now I mean you know because looking at at the draft overall great draft you know you know receivers one part outside Luke mcaffry was part that I really wanted us to hit obviously left tackle even though Brandon Coleman is looking like he can definitely fulfill that oh because looking at Luke McCaffrey 6'2 so I mean he's not he's kind of that gray area with between 62 64 where you know you're not small at receiver but you're not exactly a 66 guy or 67 guy at receiver either but um looking at the dep shars uh real quick guys um a lot of talent I mean Johan dson again they're working him in the slot 51 guys so he's not exactly that physical guy with size opposite Terry mclen um but we have Luke mcaffrey dami Brown has shown promise uh alamid zakas I mean he he has been really really solid James Crowder looked primarily as a special teams guy and a guy who's a veteran voice in the locker room but then you also add in the fact that Mitchell Tinsley uh Byron Pringle he played well last year uh again tsle he he played well Casmir Allen's a guy who's looked at as a special teams guy so I mean you're realistically you're looking at carrying six receivers um with the final 53 men roster and right now it's a battle between who's going to be number four number five and number six so um looking at the current dep chart from ESPN something that change depending on what the outlet is but right now they have they still have Johan doson opposite as jry McLaren and Luke mcaffrey at the slot so I think we're gonna get a clearer picture of what is clearly you know what's the situation with the wide receiver group once you get past you know game two and game three of the preseason and they start making cuts and and really give you a more clear picture of you know who are they looking at at the wi receiver sit you know um position man because you got a lot of guys who have shown that they can contribute I mean again you know Brian Pringle had a pretty good year last year you know in limited action Mitch Tinsley a dog receivers Zaki is the guy who could play I mean James Crowder vet special teams guy and Dei Brown has definitely looked solid in you you know so far so you know adding Mart Bryant where does he fit in and if you're going to relegate John Dawson the slot then you're looking at probably put him opposite of Terry mcloren and I don't know if that's the recipe for Success man to be honest with you um and and I'm G be honest with you I'm not in favor of the signing I I don't see the point now Jan Dawson I get he's had an up and down Camp he's had an up and down Camp so far and him he's going to year three both me and Greg said that look he's one of these guys that a lot of pressure in Johan Dawson he's got to show something in year three you know year one showed a lot of promise you saw you know the potential with him coming out of Penn State and making that trade adding him but year two was just you know left a lot to the imagination so year three he's got to show something but at this point I you know yeah you working with slot but you know you're going to the game too the preseason so I'm thinking that you go ahead and you you make him number two and you and you put mcaffry at number three and then you know I'm looking at it in like you said this is kind of a premature wide receiver um prediction but if I'm going to I just don't see where he really slots in I mean because I don't think it's a recipe of success to put him opposite tan Clen you know you don't know what he can do at this point you know maybe you'll see get a clear picture of what his you know what your expectations are for him Martavis that is and what he can really do but he hasn't played ball in six years and he's 32 years old and while that's not old in in the general scope of things you know six years is a long time not to play and that's why I still think it's crazy when we still talking about Colin Ka coming back because it's like he ain't played the ball in how many years man like and that's not even talk about all the other stuff surrounding him you know it's just you know you don't play organized football especially at the NFL level for six years I mean I don't know you know if there's any expectation comeing and be a starter I think that's crazy in my opinion so at this point you might as well continue to roll with Johan Dawson and two and hope that he breaks out and continue to put that time in you know definitely you know Cliff kingsburry definitely put him in the best position to be successful but I think at this point you you continue to roll with Jan Dawson opposite of Terry McLaren and see what luuka mcaffer can do for you at the at slot um because you know Dei Brown is not a slot guy he's he's a deep threat so I can see him best served at the force receiver number five is hard man because zakas is a guy that I like Brian Pringle is a guy I like but you could see martas and that's another thing right now it's not guaranteed he makes a team you so I think that again s your expectations about what Martavis Bryant can really do at this point could he be a factor for the the Wasing commanders absolutely you know he you know he's shown that he can play but right now we we're seeing if he can just make it through preseason game one and two and see if he can contribute and if he can cool then we'll talk about the wide receiver situation in depth because that that's a decision that I don't want man because you have a lot of talenter in my opinion for a team that's kind of in a great area you're still valuating players to see who's the long-term piece obviously Terry is you know we're hoping that Jan dossi can find have that breakout campaign and Luke mcaffrey I think is very intriguing wide receiver Prospect who I would have no problem with him starting out as a starting slot receiver but you know looking at the rest of the receiver group you know obviously you looking at five I think they're gonna carry six receivers and you know Mark Martavis Bryant I don't think is really a threat for anybody right now I think they're kind of looking at like can this be a Reclamation project can we see if we can get him straight but what his potential fit is right now he's a guy that's just trying to make the team in my opinion so I'm not going to put too much on this move because I think that I I personally don't understand the move I think that what we have is enough but I can looking at through the lens of a Reclamation project maybe you see you could be a special teams guys see if you can figure him out we'll see so you guys and let us know in the comments section what you guys thinking do you like the move for Martavis Bryant do you not like the move and why and where do you see you know where do you see him slotting in is he a threat to maybe star because I don't think so but you guys you know let me know uh what you guys think where does Martavis Bryant fit in as far as the wide receiver group in Washington DC so again guys um this week um obviously Friday we're going to do a preview for the second preseason game for the Washington commanders and we're going to do uh a prediction for the 53 man roster this week so definitely be on the lookout for that because like I said me and Greg we're gonna be ramping it up man because the season is on its way here so we're definitely going again we're going to be doing live Recaps after each game in the regular season uh we didn't do a live recap for the first preseason game but we will be doing a live cap for preseason game one and two and obviously after every regular season game so again appreciate you guys man we will see you guys later on this week man we're going to predict the 53 man roster and again on Friday we're going to do a pre uh preseason game number two um preview so definitely definitely be on the lookout for that so again appreciate you guys man Hail to the commanders and peace see you guys next time [Applause] [Music] oh
