Intro this is Minnesota today for Monday July 15th I'm Emily Reese and here's what's happening in Minnesota the Republican National Convention started today in Milwaukee reporter Mark zedek spoke with some members of Minnesota's delegation as they prepared for a bus ride to the area several miles from their Delegate Michael Bang hotel delegate Michael Bang from the Western miniapolis suburb of Mound says he thinks he and other delegates will be paying more attention than ever to their surroundings following the weekend assassination attempt of former president Donald Trump he also says he's hopeful the tragedy could help quell division in the country what happened uh was was heinous uh but it might actually bring our country together so I'm I'm very thankful for um all of us to have made it here safely and we ask for your prayers during this time for all of us to have a safe uh Journey down this road of uh historic times runs through Thursday I'm Mark sedlick Milwaukee Exel energy officials say power should be fully restored by the end of the day today Sarah Tamer has more EXL energy Power outage update reports around 26,000 customers remain without power as of Monday morning mostly in the West Metro severe storms swept through late Saturday and early Sunday causing power outages for tens of thousands of motans John Marshall is the regional vice president at XL Energy and says around 1,200 employees are working to fully restore power before Tuesday the storm itself saw a lot of rain a lot Storm impacts of saturation of the ground plus wind and so you saw a lot of big trees toppling over uh just a lot of vegetation impacts uh on this on the storm system in particular the outages came as the metro area experienced its first 90° day of the summer EXL energy officials are advising people to call them directly with any questions or concerns I'm Sarah Tamer lead ERS with Minneapolis Park workers the Minneapolis Park workers union and parkboard staff are back at the negotiating table today it's the first time both sides have met with a mediator in more than two weeks and since a number of workers walked off on the fourth of July kicking off the first strike in the Park's history the Union's business manager AJ Lang says he's optimistic they'll reach an agreement today but for the time being the picket lines remain but I do want to be clear Sports about the the fact that you know this is just a first step we're hopeful but our strike is still in full force full steam ahead the park board says about half of the Union is still working the union says 85% of the forestry division is on strike impacting the city's usual response to clearing Fallen branches and trees from public boulevards sidewalks and Parks after storms and Metropolitan Council asme union workers voted late last week to authorize a strike that Union representing more than 700 workers is seeking higher wages and an end to what the union leaders describe as unfair and discriminatory performance-based pay spokesperson for Metropolitan Council John Shadle says they look forward to returning to the bargaining table and are committed to reaching a settlement that's supportive of valued employees the Met Council oversees Regional planning public transit and Sewer services in the Twin Cities region the Minnesota Supreme Court plans to hear a case of a transgender woman who was denied entry into a powerlifting competition JC Cooper pursued powerlifting USA in 2021 after the organization denied her entry into women's weightlifting competitions a District Court ruled in her favor in 2023 finding that Cooper had been discriminated against but the Minnesota court of appeals partially overturn that ruling in March the Supreme Court will now consider whether this constituted a legal discrimination the nonprofit gender justice whose attorneys are representing Cooper says this case could have broad implications for transgender athletes in Minnesota elsewhere in sports the links lost to the Indiana Fever yesterday 81 to 74 rookie Caitlyn Clark had 17 points for the fever it was her first game at Target Center as a professional the links host the Atlanta Dream Wednesday at noon Minnesota Twins lost to the Giants yesterday in San Francisco 3-2 the twins are now on an All-Star break for a week Minnesota United hosts DC United on Wednesday Wednesday the loons played to a oneall draw in Houston on Saturday your forecast for Minnesota Weather tonight mostly clear slight chance of showers and storms lows will be in the mid-50s to the low 60s and tomorrow mostly sunny slight chance of afternoon thunderstorms highs will be in the mid 70s that's it for Minnesota today thanks for listening Phil picardi will have an update for you on Tuesday morning [Music]
