Is the Chinese-Built BYD Shark BETTER Than the All-American Tesla Cybertruck & Rivian R1T?

Intro USA vs China today is a truly special day because what we have here is a vehicle that could be groundbreaking for not only pickup trucks but the world in general Andre what is this crazy looking truck well yeah one of our viewers and Friends reached out to us and he said I have an all new brand new byd shark which is a Chinese made pickup truck that's right this is a brand new truck which has been promised to change the way that everybody looks at pickup trucks and it just so happens that this amazing viewer had family that have the two newest most exciting electric trucks from the USA the rivan r1t and of course the Tesla cyber truck so in today's video we're going to find out how does the best of China compare to the best of the US isn't that right Andre yeah let's do it dude so let's talk a little bit about BYD Shark vs the Rest this byd shark and what makes it so revolutionary this is a partial electric partial gasoline vehicle but it works in a really interesting way so let's talk to the powertrain Andre what's the battery how far can it go on a single charge yeah so this is really a plug in hybrid um and we can pop the hood right and really learn everything about it but it has approximately 295 Kow hour battery and byd says about 60 to 62 Mi of all electric range but it also has a fuel tank that's right so what byd here is doing is trying to offset some of the disadvantages of a folio electric truck and that has to do with Towing and Hauling and that kind of thing so when you run out of that 60 or so miles of range this vehicle has a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine a 1.5 L that will essentially recharge the battery so there's no physical connection between this engine and the wheels this acts as a generator and that's what makes this truck so unique yeah and um you get all the power all the time basically because byd says approximately 450 horsepower right and there's a um of course this gasoline engine internal combustion you have an electric motor in the front and an electric motor in the rear as well so let me take the camera Andre I'll film you for a sec you want to close up that hood yes let's talk about the size comparison so the Tesla cyber truck right now is considered more or less a full-size truck wouldn't you say yeah so it matters about how long it is right so um this is about um F-150 wheelbase about 145 Ines um and overall the Cyber truck is a little bit shorter than the Ford F-150 crew cab but this is something different because really this truck is a midsize uh it has a wheelbase that's approximately uh 3 and 1/2 in shorter than the Toyota Tacoma Crew Cab about 128 in and uh total length which is about an inch and a half longer than a Tacoma so I would call this truck a midsize what's interesting though is if you see this byd parked next next to the rivan it is quite a bit taller now the rivan of course is not in its offered height this is a quad motor with air suspension but the height difference between the two is pretty wild yeah you can kind of see that and there's no height adjustment here right the byd shark has about 9 in maybe just a little bit over 9 in of ground clearance and of course all-wheel drive four-wheel drive capability uh but only two Motors like that Foundation series uh cyber truck now Andre I'm going to give you the the camera back and let's talk about the design of these trucks because they have gone in a very different direction now the rivan is a very handsome vehicle it's very swoopy it's very modern it's very elegant and I really like what Ravine has done with this keeping it both aerodynamic but also looking a little rugged with these tow hooks down here and you can see in contrast the byd is much chunkier I definitely Andre see a little bit of F-150 here yes you know especially with this C clamp design of these headlights and then byd which stands for Build Your Dreams by the way is proud displayed across the front of the truck and then of of course compared to the Cyber truck it's like it's not even in the same league well cyber truck is I mean it's just its own thing right I mean cyber truck is really a wedge going down the road and the other two the shark and the ravan r1t they're a little bit more traditionally shaped right now what's cool I'm going to take this under and film you for a sec so if we look underneath the Tesla yes completely flat floor right because that's where that battery lives in this cybertruck now if you look underneath the byd interestingly enough it's a pretty similar concept because this vehicle doesn't have drive shafts like traditional gasoline truck instead what you get is a large flat battery complemented with the exhaust system which is pretty funny but it is also completely flat for the most part minus the fuel tank yeah really so in the middle here you see that square right uh that's really the battery and byd says it's also kind of integral to the frame right so it does have a full ladder frame but then the battery kind of ties in there um and this is the this is where the charge port is going to pop it open uh yep so there you see interestingly uh DC fast charging is also available yeah d uh j1772 port and DC Port um charge times it's not going to be as fast as something like the Tesla or the rivan no but then it doesn't have to be because it has that turbocharged 1.5 engine to recharge the battery exactly so uh byd says 30% to 80% for this 29 Kow battery in about 20 minutes which translates you know I did a little bit of math uh to about what 44 or 45 kilowatt speed of charging so not super fast let's look at the bed a much more conventional bed than of course what we would find in the Cyber truck and how do we pop it open there's a double tap on this little button we have one of our gear bags here um it's bedlined actually this shark is fully optioned almost fully optioned so it has almost every feature that you can imagine in this in this shark yeah that's right and a more conventional bed design than certainly the cybertruck has with those big pillars have you seen where have you seen this before Tommy just ripped that off from Ford this looks like a Ford uh step tailgate step that's so funny but there's no handle I I've been looking you know on a Ford system there's also a handle that pops out right um this one doesn't have that doesn't appear to have that interesting but look at pretty usable bed size and I think a pretty usable truck size as well yeah can you walk around this way yeah check it out so there's um Outlets here in the bed very similar to what you could find in a cyber Tru or some others it's like 35 amps y yep so 3 Kow Max oh yeah 3 KW so uh this spec hasn't been published I I wasn't able to find it anywhere but it says right there 3 KW 110 volt and there is another attachment you can have where you can charge kind of B directionally right so you can charge other vehicles off of this or power some serious stuff off of this so Andre of the three trucks here we'll finish back up at the front which of the three design wise do you think is the best ah you know I know this is byd's basically first pickup truck that's why they put their badge very very boldly and in a big way but I'm kind of partial to the rivan my friend I like the rivan too actually I think it's a really nice design overall both are interesting trucks in their own ways they both have very different looks the rivan a little bit more swoopy the byd very chunky and the Tesla cyber truck a little bit of a door wedge but certainly unique in its own right but uh byd shark has the most range because you have that internal combustion engine right uh Bud says up to about 520 Mi total range well Andre I think there's only one thing for it we got to get them all out on the road and see what they're like so let's start with the Tesla then we'll go to the rivan and then we'll finish with the boid cuz this technology is pretty amazing or at least [Music] Cybertruck Test Drive different so we are starting in the Tesla cyber truck and looking at this interior of course it is minimalist very minimalist so you're not going to find hardly any hard buttons in this vehicle it's all going to be incorporated in this Giant Center screen the only buttons are really on the steering wheel and then over here for the window switches and of course steering wheel is a little bit of a misnomer because it really is a steering yolk yeah it's kind of a squirkle uh almost like a game controller would be so let's talk about driving the Cyber Tru now this is an incredibly different driving experience than anything on the market first of all four-wheel steering steer by wire technology there's no connection between the steering Yol and the wheels it's all electronic and it's like driving a spaceship yeah and it's um the experience is very unique because of the shape and like you said it has a lot of groundbreaking Technologies really 48 8 volt system that enables a lot of these features like um you know the four-wheel steering and Drive by wire and many many others yeah that's right and if you look at range right around 300 miles with the Tesla cyber Tru and then there's a couple different versions so let's talk horsepower yeah so this is basically a 600 horsepower machine the one we're driving right now and there's also the tri motor one that has even more horsepower of course and a higher price tag um we'll talk about the price near the end of this video right yeah we will and we'll talk about what that byd costs and what it could cost if it came to the US now the Driving Experience of the Cyber Tru is Pleasant I know this truck has received quite a bit of we we we'll say hate online in in recent months but it is one of the best driving vehicles in this segment I think it's just so smooth and comfortable and the suspension is well sorted it's a little noisy in here especially at highway speeds but it's pretty well isolated and here we'll do just one quick punch of the accelerator you ready yeah wa oh yeah jeez yep that really zooms yeah really really zooms and actually tfl Studios we uh our company we have a long-term cyber truck uh just configured this way yeah right um so we're very familiar with it I agree with you it's one of probably the best riding or dve you know handling as far as the Tesla is concerned Tesla vehicle and also one of the most comfy pickup trucks also yeah right and look it's weird right the the windshield is 13 mies from where I'm at and this a pillar is basically a parallelogram with the the rest of the vehicle I it's a very odd thing but that's kind of what makes it charming and unique and then of course you have the stainless steel construction that is bullet resistant up to a certain caliber so it's something that is unlike anything else on the market today and a couple of other features uh right uh 11,000 lb of Towing actually really good usable payload um on the on the Cyber truck so even know the bed is weird sh shaped right um and not you know perfectly square or rectangular um you could still put a lot of weight into this uh thing and also uh really um tow our large trailer with this yeah and that's a good point it it's a capable truck uh it also has locking differentials front and back so it's very good off-road four corner air suspension you can lift it to the Moon to get that additional clearance and it has a very unique Tesla based operating system right I mean it's kind of like their thing um it's their user interface and um no apple carplay right no Android auto build quality it's okay I um I I I'm not going to hate on it too much cuz I think it's better than than than some folks would have you believe but it certainly doesn't feel like a Toyota in here it's not well and cost $100,000 Tommy yeah it's a lot of money so for 100k um and also like you said Real World Range is really kind of just under 300 miles right Tesla may tell you otherwise you know they may say over 300 but um in our experience it hasn't been but Tesla also has the network behind them right the charge Network which is very reliable uh um our office uh manager Grant just recently drove our truck from Denver to De Moine Iowa and had no issues whatsoever on the interstate super easy to run and operate yeah it's a really good point Andre so certainly the bed is one of the coolest Cybertruck Features or worst parts of the Cyber truck depending on how you look at it push a button that totle cover slides open a lots of room back here it's kind of strangely shaped with that bulkhead and then lot of trapezoids push button for the tailgate as well but it it works pretty good overall Andre yeah and there's a little cubby under here that's right so and there's also a front trunk so if we come over to the front of the Tesla and if I can find the pad for try on camera it's always a little befuddling to me Andre why they there's a little Buton a little push right uh there there you go the one-handed Wonder Andre smirnov yeah that's going to Glide open you got even more storage space it's about 7 cubic feet so no not a humongous amount of space but still there's something [Music] Rivian R1T Test Drive there okay now it's it's time to get into the rivan r1t once again this is a quad motor basically a top speec vehicle hey dude welcome to the interior of the here you go just hold this for just a second the camera thank you now look at this dashboard design right I love this quite a bit different than the Tesla in that they have Incorporated some different colors and textures and materials but similar Andre in the fact that it's all done through this one screen yeah there's um of course the Tesla doesn't have the kind of the stock for you know shifting in gear or turn signals signals yeah um but yeah I love this interior more than the Cyber Tru I would I would say it's a little bit more traditional and I think this interior is executed in a really good way no for sure and I also love having actual stocks thank goodness so that air suspension going to settle into the correct height no four-wheel steering in this truck right Andre nope and they took away our tank turn you know they kind of teased it initially and it it never came now is also worth noting that this is the Gen one rivan and there is a new updated Gen 2 that you recently which is even more powerful and more Bonkers that's right and they changed a lot of the stuff under the skin but the overall design is pretty similar wouldn't you say exactly so the body the interior is mostly the same what they did change for Gen 2 is really the kind of the electrical system they did you know some weight savings architecture uh they changed the architecture underneath um and added more power uh to their Motors this truck didn't need more power cuz it has 830 horsepower already yeah that's absolutely just insane number um really smooth in here and much more upright in the driving position so in the Cyber truck you're very leaned back right with that crazy windshield in this vehicle you're much more upright it is a little bit more truck-like but the Driving Experience is all car so you don't get any reverberation between the body and the frame because it is of course unibody um just like that cyber truck is unibody uh but let's let's talk about the power a little bit so I'm going to you're going to give it a little squirt yeah give it just a little bit of a squirt here pass don't want to hit the birds and oh wow oh jeez dude yeah this is just nuts lots of electric power and of course um two Motors in the front two Motors in the rear a quad motor system and you know what um they've been they've talked about this before the the wireless charging you know is you know the phone moves around but you do have you know plenty of space and it kind of has an outdoor feel to me as well yeah a little bit more adventurous than the than what we found in in in the C yeah you've got like the gear tunnel which we'll show you at the end so you can hold longer longer items in there which is cool so lots of thoughtful features in the rivan and overall a really nice driving truck and range wise interesting story too cuz you can get a rivan in the correct configuration dual motor to over 400 miles yeah depending on which battery uh you pick up and of course that's changing they now have a dual motor a tri motor system in Gen 2 as well um so you have different ranges and yes over 400 mil is possible which is really really cool and look I love rivan um I prefer them to cyber trucks in a lot of ways the build quality also feels pretty good in these vehicles and people are really loving that they love The Adventurous lifestyle this is four Motors versus two in the cybertruck and the by each wheel has it own individual motor no traditional locking differentials though so really the offered capability is a little bit more limited in this than you would find in the Tesla yeah I would agree um but a really high quality product and then we'll talk about pricing finally at the end but what what is what is something like this cost Andre yeah so they start really in the most basic configurations at about what 70 72,000 M uh but of course well we're in the launch edition right now so this is one of the most equipped and and um and so they go to about 90 95 but now the Gen 2s are going to be even more expensive that's right yeah so those are going to see a a price bump as well yeah all right Andre the bed and the rivan R1T Features this also has a power tunnel cover they're known to get a little stuck so the new rivan have a uh old school mechanical Tano but really good siiz bed rivian have a really long tailgate too which is pretty cool cool and then if we come over here Andre let's show them that gear tunnel so you can push a button up here on the bed rail that's going to pop open the little gear tunnel and check that out lots of space and also Outlets 110 volt in there um so yeah a lot of uh possibilities for storage yeah and a decent sized frunk but it is a little bit of a lift over right so you have to kind of uh bring some um the items in there that's exactly right BYD Shark Test Drive welcome this kind of feels like a normal pickup like a midsizer would be it does you're right so here can you hold this for just a second yeah so the byd Andre let's talk about this truck where it is sold and how the heck I'm behind the wheel right now so uh it's currently sold in Mexico and we are in Texas which is not far from Mexico and uh our friend uh let us borrow this truck this truck is not currently sold in the United States yeah that's right and with tariffs imposed on China I kind of highly doubt we would see this truck um unless they started manufacturing here but Andre look I think it's fair to say that a lot of Chinese vehicles in the past have had a reputation for being um poorly made poorly made and also copying Western designs yes this is the first vehicle I've been in in a long time where I I stepped in here and said wow this doesn't feel like a copy of a Tacoma or a Nissan and the build quality feels exceptional it's really good so what I noticed immediately when I touch the door here so this is kind of a softer material here not a huge sill but there's some nice stitching by the way this is one the top trims of the shark um as well cup holders we have really fast charging wireless charging 50 WTS dude dude that's crazy and then I love this you got this little control panel here and this is everything from your gear SEL to your mode selection between hybrid and start stop you can fold the tailgate here we got some fan speed Hill descent control look at look at this little Command Center yeah volume control um so everything is kind of lots of switches and that's what truck guys like and gals like lots of switches on the steering wheel as well yeah and then look at this so we have mode selections normal normal Eco and Sport but there's also terrain selection so I can go through okay some of the words are funny muddy LAN sandland grit it's sandland muddy land snowfield grass yes so I think some of their translations might be a little off that's okay that's okay though we're going to go back into the to sport while we drive dude we're going to sport so here we can see our Eevee range right now is estimated at 52 miles our gas range is estimated at 270 Mi and that's about half tank right maybe just a little bit over half tank so in theory dude you could get over 500 miles on a full tank with this vehicle pretty easily and I've noticed top trim but no sunroof so let's look at the screen now this is interesting because ooh uh fancy very fancy it changes orientation change orientation but this feels very Android based and it's got some cool features so here is our home screen right navigation this one's got Spotify and then phone connectivity these are individual little bubbles to go between different settings check that out though Android auto and apple carplay yep Wireless it's right there and then look at this this is a really interesting thing oh dude so look you could upload whatever you wanted to this car logs movies there there's 56 gab of total storage space me this feels so Android which is really interesting there's even like a little swipe to go back button there yeah and then as we go over here smart charging so we can turn on charging schedules which is quite good um by I'm not sure be internet internet connectivity thing and then look what I'm also impressed with is navigation so this is a vehicle not intended for the US market but what we're going to find is it's super easy to find um EV Chargers even here outside of El Paso it's going to list them all and show us exactly where they are and it's really really well done look it tell tells us the availability of them too it's pretty darn good yeah it's a an dual climate control system as well yeah we got climate zones here air purification vent and seat heating let me go let me turn on some ventilated seats O So OB look little leaves are starting to pop out the the number of features in here especially for the price point which will tell you at the end is amazing regen settings state of charge settings range mode Dynamic and standard smart charging you can um there's an immobilizer for the that system which is good for the charge port discharge settings under it there you go look at that vehicle to load uh-huh you mentioned there's our consumption so about 30.8 is what the owner's gettingg yeah yeah um so that's on once the battery is kind of depleted mostly um it switches to the engine and that's 30.8 MPG so Andre I'm going to go like this yes let's uh let's do the face me mode all right let's see what a Chinese truck drives like so initial quality Andre are you impressed yes initial quality first impression also heads up display um digital screens lots of levers and switches and buttons and the seat is comfortable yeah right this feels a lot more roomy in here than something like a Toyota Tacoma certainly feels a little smaller than that Tesla in here are you in sport mode by the way uh I am in sport mode EV sport mode and then I can also go to hybrid mode which we'll try out in a second here okay so cruising along perfectly quiet dual motor setup and and that horsepower 450 right yeah um you know some different countries and regions measure horse power differently so it's approximately in that in that range yeah that's pretty good you're cutting off our heads there Andre sorry I'm getting excited okay so we're making the turn here and we're going to go ahead and plant it and see what the acceleration feels like this is our first initial drive if you want to find out more about what this thing drives like head over to tfl truck.com we have a much more in-depth review y so we're going to come on to our little straightaway here you can slow down a little bit and punch it we'll come to a stop EV sport mode all right got some regen there all right are you ready yeah here we go in three two one oh oh yeah what yes and I could feel the tires spinning a little bit so quite a bit of front end bias there as you accelerate um those tires are uh eager to to burn the fronts off at least yeah it it pretty decent Andre pretty good how's the steering feel if any it's pretty good the steering feels good it's a pretty quick ratio as well not a lot of turns lock to lock of course nothing like that Tesla cyber Tru that we were just in but let's go ahead and try to make this maneuver we're going to do a U-turn in this parking lot yeah really nice really tight turning radius for what it is smooth roll out too well it's not a huge truck now the one thing which I think really could be improved I'm not digging this ride quality it's very bouncy it feels like there's just not enough rebound control yeah I kind of feel all the imperfections a little bit yeah it's and it's also it's it's it's bouncy on the rebound but it's pretty harsh on that initial impact so the Springs are firm but the shocks feel very soft which it's kind of an odd odd uh combination well because this is kind of a hefty vehicle right it's not that lightweight exactly that's right it it it feels pretty heavy now it doesn't feel as big or cumbersome as like that rivan or as that cybertruck but you certainly do feel some of the mass as you drive it around so EV mode is perfectly civilized one thing very quiet too one thing I'm going to say is very limited regen it could be because our battery is near full but that certainly is not a one pedal setup and then the brakes are incredibly grabby it could be B immed it could be this truck is new but I would love to see a more linear and the the pedal is really firm so you just kind of not a lot of feedback right it's like pushing against a stone where you push push and then you kind of grab um so I think that this is where the US brands have it on term in terms of the the truck comparison is that the Driving Experience is not as refined which is interesting cuz it's really quiet it's quieter in here than some of the US yeah very very pleasant very quiet all right I'm going into the hybrid setting let me take it out of sport mode you can kind of see now um it changed the screen yeah interesting you can see though that engine's not coming on so I'm wondering if maybe how about sport make it sport I'm wondering if maybe the state of charge is too high no that engine is still remaining off which is interesting or maybe it's so quiet we can't even hear it well I think we would we would be able to detect it a little bit so we'll have to do some more experimenting with that the owner is also telling us Andre that the um charging has been very good it's got DC charging but he just plugs it in at home it's been no problem he also say he's been using level two mostly yeah and he also says the um adaptive cruise and the driver assistance Tech is excellent yeah which so like Lane keeping and all those features yeah we haven't had a really chance to try that out but we will on the tfl truck video so look guys I think overall Andre I'm pretty impressed and let's talk about the price on this truck what do this one run fully loaded hold on let me switch the camera um so according to the owner and once again uh he purchased it in Mexico right um equivalency uh when you translate that to US dollar $47,000 wow half the price less than half the price of the Cyber truck and about half the price of that rivan and you've got gasoline and electric power trins in here and more range the problem is though of course it's not in available in the US yes and also less Towing 5500 lb of Towing and we'll dive more deeper into it at the uh truck video that we're going to be filming uh but maybe a little bit less um capability right not as much payload not as big of a bed and also uh not as much Towing actually half the towing true good point good point but overall Andre for a vehicle that from a country that I think a lot of people dismiss especially in the truck Community this is a heck of an interesting product right out of the bat wouldn't you say yeah for a first attempt at least that we've seen here in North America in Mexico and um uh I'm really impressed but wait I have one Verdict more question for Tommy hey Tommy how's the rear seat you know Andre it's really good so this this is my leg room this seat is in a comfortable riding position at 6 ft tall lots of room really good headro this is a lot better than any midsize truck on the market I've seen wow so Andre I have to say um it's uh pretty cool what byd has done with this truck and I really like that range extender SL hybrid approach that they've taken really excited to see what the other American oems do to compete just on a technology standpoint by is feelingly killing it so a huge thank you to the owner for setting this shoot up and um for the price it's it's gonna be hard to beat if it ever made it to the US if they could get around the tariffs yeah but the price is a big unknown right I mean if it did come uh who knows how much it could it could cost in in reality exactly right well folks let us know
