[Music] tonight members located three deceased individuals three people found dead in a Lloydminster home is being investigated as a triple homicide the government announces a forestry plant in Prince Albert is back on track and they're either upgrading their bike or they're making it unrecognizable what happens to Stolen Bikes in Saskatoon we went looking and came back with some answers this is CBC Saskatchewan news it is Thursday September 12th and the CBC Saskatchewan News starts right now good evening and thanks for watching we begin in the Border City of Lloydminster where three people have been found dead inside a home our CMP are releasing few details but say the incident is being investigated as a triple homicide now CBC did speak with people familiar with that home who say a father and his two adult sons lived there Julia Wong has the latest it's still a very active crime scene at this house that you see here behind me in Lloyd Minister after the bodies of three people were discovered inside now their bodies were found by police who were conducting a well-being check around 600 p.m. Wednesday night officers have been on scene coming in and out of the house removing items there are yellow evidence markers on the ground and at one point officers were using a metal detector to survey the ground rcmb have been staying tight lipped they're not releasing much information they're not saying the ages of the victims whether they're male or female the identities of the three people and what the relationship between the three people was they are saying that this was a targeted isolated incident and they are stressing that this was not random now something of this nature it's understandable the community is shaken RCMP are saying that the suspect or suspects remain at large and they are calling these deaths murders at the same time they are reiterating that there's no immediate concern for Public Safety at this time it doesn't appear to be a random act so we're not the general public is if they're not involved in this type of activity or any types of criminal activity and I'm again I'm not saying these were criminals at all I don't I I don't know the investigation but generally it's when it's targeted there's there's a reason we live in a a world that things do happen but in the same token as I just related this is not everyday occurrences in Lloyd Minister Alberta Saskatchewan so I remind people to be aware of that step back give your family a hug with Floyd Minister being a border City RCP officers from both Alberta and tatan are involved in this investigation autopsies on the three bodies are expected in the coming days Julia Wong CBC News Lloydminster election season is heating up the even though the RIT has yet to drop many stakeholders have expectations of the candidates and that includes the Saskatchewan teachers Federation they've launched their own campaign called the vote for public education it outlines challenges teachers are facing in classrooms it also calls for three key commitments restore and maintain per student funding address class class size and complexity and address growing concerns of violence in schools the stf's President says the campaign is nonpartisan we want all parties and candidates to know what the most pressing most pressing issues are in our schools we also want to provide information so voters can make their own informed decisions on each party's education platform we want candidates to commit to addressing the public education crisis and to follow through on those commitments when they form government the provincial election is expected to be held on or anytime before October 28th beot says the demands from the stf also apply to those running in the upcoming Schoolboard elections those will run along with the Municipal elections set for November 13th now speaking of campaigns the Saskatchewan NDP is promising to cut provincial sales tax on some grocery items it says the cut will help families save roughly $500 over four years the announcement is the latest in a string of tax cut promises from the NDP over the last week that includes a bid to remove tax on gas and children's clothing the promises have come without a plan for financing but NDP leader Carla Beck says they'll soon release a fully costed platform that balances the budget it's about offering relief at a time when people are putting food back at the grocery store using um you know food banks uh this is this is about investing in in the priorities that Saskatchewan people um want their government to be paying attention to and not wasting money mismanaging projects like we've seen the government do year after year some basic grocery items are already exempt from the provincial sales tax Beck says they'll add more items to that list as of now the province levies 6% PST on items that are not exempt Premier Mo made his own announcement today plans to build a new OSB plant in Prince Albert are back on track the was first announced years ago and promised to employ hundreds of people but it never happened prou dial brings us the latest on what's changed the provincial government is increasing how much Timber can be harvested by the saskat based company one sky Forest Products it's expanding to 1.2 million cubic meters this very much is a foundational step Premier Scott Mo says this will set the stage for the company to open an oriented strand board or OSB Mill in Prince Albert OSB has become a popular building material for homes that investment will spur 800 direct and indirect jobs in the region many of these jobs will go to indigenous as well as non-indigenous people and that's how we ensure that all people benefit from the success ba mayor Greg Dion says it's great news for the city because when I talk about for Street I talk about careers not jobs careers these are careers because you get a job at the OSB plant you're going to be able to buy a house buy a car you know survive with your family the OSB Mill was first announced several years ago and the company was planning to move an Old Mill to Prince Albert and start the production in 2022 that didn't happen the company says getting access to more Timber means a project will now go ahead it plans to build a new Mill at Double the cost the price tag $500 million it's because it's a new versus versus a used one and so obviously when you get into a new shiny car versus a used one there's a difference and so we're very excited that it's 500 million and within the city limits so that means taxes for the city of PA this new allocation comes from what was initially assigned to indonation company paper Excellence which isn't opening a mill for indigenous Partners it's great news to you ownership means that we will benefit from the wealth generated create employment and meaningful careers for our people and involve our business in the supply chain one sky plans to begin construction next year and open the Mill in 2027 prsh CBC News Prince Albert the progressive conservative party of Saskatchewan has decided not to merge with the Buffalo party of Saskatchewan PC leader Rose bushel spoke to reporters at a news conference today she says after discussions an agreement could not be reached bushel says it was the PCS who reached out to start talks but ultimately decided against it due to some different focuses in policy while there were a few things that we had in common with the Buffalo party including the love for that we all have for this great Province unfortunately there were many things that kept us apart these include but are not limited to the Buffalo party's extensive focus on out of scope Federal and international issues while we are sympathetic to their focus on these things we the progressive conservative party and skatan feel the primary focus of our party is local and on provincial issues exclusively Bushell did not rule out a future merger CBC did speak to the leader of the Buffalo party Phil zja says he's disappointed with the PC's decision but says his party is excited about the upcoming election campaign it is one of the most frustrating parts of owning a bicycle the fear of it being stolen the reality is a lot of people never get their bikes back Dan zki takes us to where some of those bikes end up ever wonder what happens to Stolen Bikes well they may end up at a Chop Shop like this vacant lot in Saskatoon thieves will take a bike and then break it down into its parts for resale immediate thought is there's a lot of Stolen Bikes here the thieves take bikes and swap out Parts either because something wasn't working or because it it starts to make the bike look different and when somebody has a stolen bike and they give a description to the police that's what they're looking for um so I've seen cases where you know they they swap out the wheels they swap out the seat they swap out uh other components and they're either upgrading their bike or they're making it unrecognizable police didn't know about the site and say no one has complained but they want reports of any suspicious activity people have taken things into their own hands in online groups there are multiple posts a day of Stolen Bikes spotted in the city people who have had theirs taken share photos of what to look out for there are posts about thieves cutting locks stealing from Parks schools and yards one guy said he's had three bikes stolen from him in 3 months according to police stats about 800 bikes a year are reported as missing now some people do get their bikes back but not from here Dan zakreski CBC News Saskatoon celebrations continue to Mark the 150th anniversary of treaty 4 and while people who mention his name standing ready says her ancestor want to share the lands in a good way she wants to make sure that happens for future generations and to be here as a treaty person and we're all she's not the only one honoring the past while trying to protect the future Elders of sapoa crenation in Manitoba are camping with 50 families to celebrate the treaty anniversary their family's father Chief Roy quill was given a treaty for medal in 1970 from the queen it's a reminder of the promises the queen made to their father years ago Marilyn Stevens is the elist who was 20 years old when her father was given the medal I'll be gone I won't be coming here as I do every year I've studied 1979 here I was quite young back then and I've been coming back year after year trying to push for better life for our children many Elders say they want the youth to learn their history with the treaties I was brought up to look I was brought up to listen and I was brought up to learn and to be proud of how resilient their ancestors were Louise beigle CBC news for Cal well it is officially coat season at least in some parts of the day a cooler cloudy walk for some people today out in Saskatoon but it certainly did not get them down but worry not the sunshine will return for the weekend but not without some rain first and then the clouds come back Ethan we'll have your forecast for us after the break stay with us [Music] welcome back two SpaceX astronauts have joined an incredibly elite club carrying out the first ever all civilian spacewalk billionaire Jared isaacman was the first to exit the capsule and taken the view back at home we all have a lot of work to do but from here bir sure looks like a perfect world [Applause] the purpose of the Space Walk was to test out spacex's brand new space suits the crew has traveled farther into space than any human since NASA's Apollo project more than 50 years ago the weather update is brought to you by Capital GMC Buick Cadillac employee pricing is on [Music] now weather specialist Ethan Williams joins me now you tell me you have a forecast that is out of this world oh good one I'll bring us back down to earth how about with some reality in terms of our our forecast uh well not quite out of this world but we do have uh something happening right now that is not really all that common for September and that is some severe weather this is a severe thunderstorm warning that has just popped up within the last 30 minutes or so here it's for the RMS of elm Thorp and Redburn which includes aen Lee and you can't see it here but Rolo is right here along Highway 39 and this cell is moving mostly to the north right now it'll uh probably cross the Trans Canada just west of Regina within the next little while nickel to pingpong ball-sized tail possible with this and some very strong wind gusts as well and as we zoom out you can see that we actually have a larger severe thunderstorm watch uh within the kind of this yellow border here that encompasses much of South Central and Southeastern Saskatchewan including the city of Regina and you can see those cells beginning to move up from Montana and even through North Dakota as well a few starting to slip up otherwise uh this whole low pressure system which has been bringing the severe weather also bringing some showers to portions of West Central Saskatchewan today and it's really been raining in parts of Southeastern Alberta as well and it's been windy along with that too we've seen gusts near 60 at times uh close to the Manitoba border and you can see where the rain is falling because the temperatures are really holding back in Western and Northern parts of the province and then into the little bit of sunshine that we had today in South Central and Southeastern regions we're still into the 20s some 10 degrees colder though as you go West toward the Alberta border so this thing is going to play out probably through the next 24 hours here's something like this a few more stray showers and thunderstorms through South Central and Southeastern Saskatchewan tonight we're going to see another system start to uh form around the center of this low in West Central areas tomorrow morning and then this becomes mostly a northern Saskatchewan weather story tomorrow afternoon as it continues to move northward things are going to start to clear out overnight Saturday though for South and Central still getting a bit of some lingering rain to the North and then we're nice and clear as we head into the weekend for most of us but not before we see maybe another 10 to 20 millimeters in West Central parts of the province further south and east from there we're in the dry sector of this system in Regina and the southeast so we're really just catching a few sprinkles here and there Northern Saskatchewan we could see amounts maybe in the 15 to 25 millimeter range especially into the Churchill region good news for the forest fire situation there that'll hopefully start to put out a few of those fires going to still be quite Gusty 50 to 60 kilomet an hour winds as we head into the next couple of days and that likely means that we're going to see the smoke move back in to South and Central as we head into the latter part of tomorrow and the first part of Saturday before that starts to move northward so Regina quick look at your forecast we see that a little bit of unsettled weather for tomorrow and then clearing for the weekend and then the unsettled weather and cooler weather moving in back next week that'll be the same for Saskatoon as well where we could actually see a few more thunderstorms again next week Sam but when it clears we can see the stars exactly shoot for the stars I say thanks Ean you're welcome oh boy a daredevil biker has managed to ride the waves in the Black Sea off the coast of Georgia yes he is riding on water to pull off this stunt the wheels needed to be fitted with handmade skis to help Glide over the surface he also had to build up momentum on the beach before entering the sea the highp speed kept him afloat as he traveled all the way to another town 33 km up the coast we'll be back after the break [Music] Saskatoon native Aaron Bowers describes herself as half woman half fish and she's going to put that to the test later this month when she attempts to swim across the English Channel if successful she'll become just the 28th Canadian to make the demanding 34 kmet Crossing she told our Adam Hunter she's also doing it in honor of her dad Kelly Bowers it's a swim I've sort of always wanted to do and I've been gradually building up my distance in open water over the last sort of five to 10 years and it's sort of the Pinnacle of the sport so um when I had the opportunity to to do it this year it was um sort of the culmination of a bunch of different perfect things and the time is right and I'm all trained up so yeah I'm ready to go over and take it on you're facing a 21 Mile Stretch of water across England and France uh which is a very busy uh one of the biggest uh shipping lanes in the world and so you're also dealing with a number of different crosscurrents is another reason that makes makes it really challenging plus uh the water temperature and the marine life that could be in there as well so it's it's a tends to be a fairly grueling swim there's a number of uh classic Open Water swims around the world but this one is sort of the uh the jewel in the crown uh if you will I I I was fortunate enough to take the Chunnel this year at Easter and I never once occurred to me that someone would be swimming uh I thought about the ships passing and all that that you described but you know what's what do you think is going to be going through mind when you're when you're in the water just knowing that you're in such a historic uh body of water and there's so much happening at the same time yeah yeah it's a really historic swim um I I imagine that I will be worrying about running into jellyfish and getting stung by those guys uh the temperature is going to be a little bit colder than I've had the opportunity to train in this summer kind of since the early season so you know I'll be thinking warm thoughts definitely um I will be in communication with the people who are on the boat beside me so they'll be feeding me um every hour for the first six hours then every half hour after that um and just concentrating on my stroke and you know keeping everything together and uh looking forward to to Landing in France and then getting back on the boat and heading back to England and going to the pub what inspired you to to go on this this journey and and I know you you said at 12 you wanted to do this but you know you kept the promise to yourself these years later what has inspired you to to Really fulfill this this wish yeah this year is actually the fifth anniversary of the passing of my dad so my dad died suddenly in 2019 and um it's the fiveyear anniversary this year so uh for me it's a an like it's an opportunity to fundraise uh sort of in his honor it's an opportunity to you know to do something that he would really have been proud of me for uh and you know he would have loved to have been on the boat with me had uh you know had he still been alive at this time and it's just a way to sort of Honor his memory and you know all of the support and and love that he kind of put into me as like an athlete as a child and and that so it's it's a great way to um to sort of celebrate his memory as well that's a big part of [Music] it and Ethan's back with one last look at your weather and we are starting to see a little bit of that smoke move in tonight probably in Regina we're left with a chance of showers after the risk of some severe thunderstorms this evening uh into tomorrow morning maybe a little bit of that lingering Haze the winds start to pick up a bit but we're in the dry slot of this low pressure system so we'll likely get some clearing Skies before a little bit of cloud starts to build in chance of an afternoon shower and yeah those winds picking up a little bit from the southwest for Saskatoon likely some showers at midnight tonight this will likely be fog for you at times tomorrow morning uh with the chance of showers and then some light rain by the afternoon as that fog clears away and maybe a Rumble of Thunder into the afternoon before Skies clear clouds clear away for the weekend Sam all right thanks Ethan you're welcome and that is it for us tonight for news anytime you can head to cbc.ca Sask you can subscribe to the CBC Saskatchewan YouTube channel or download the CBC News app thank you so much for watching have a great night [Music]
