THE CITY OF MINNEAPOLIS. YOU KNOW, IT IS A SOMBER DAY IN MINNESOTA AS THE CITY OF MINNEAPOLIS MOURNS A POLICE OFFICER KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY, AS WELL AS A CIVILIAN KILLED IN THAT SAME INCIDENT. THANKS FOR JOINING US HERE ON THIS FRIDAY ON THE FOX NINE MORNING NEWS AT 11. AND ON FOX LOCAL, I'M TOM BUTLER. THURSDAY'S MASS SHOOTING HAS A LOT OF PEOPLE GRIEVING AND LOOKING FOR ANSWERS. WE HAVE TEAM COVERAGE OF THE STORY FOR YOU. SE KWON HAS MORE ON THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF OFFICER JAMAL MITCHELL. BUT FIRST, LET'S START WITH BILL KELLER, WITH MORE ON WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THIS DEADLY SHOOTING BILL. GOOD MORNING. GOOD MORNING TOM. THERE ARE STILL SO MANY UNANSWERED QUESTIONS. BUT THIS MORNING THE BCA IS LEADING THE INVESTIGATION INTO THIS COMPLEX CASE THAT HAS TWO SEPARATE CRIME SCENES. HERE'S WHAT WE KNOW. IT ALL STARTED JUST AFTER 5 P.M. YESTERDAY EVENING. THAT'S WHEN OFFICERS WERE CALLED TO AN APARTMENT BUILDING ON BLAISDELL AVENUE SOUTH. THIS WAS FOR A REPORT OF A SHOOTING WHILE IN ROUTE, AN OFFICER STOPPED TO HELP WHAT APPEARED TO BE POSSIBLE VICTIMS. THAT'S WHEN AUTHORITIES SAY OFFICER JAMAL MITCHELL WAS SHOT IN WHAT THEY DESCRIBED AS AN AMBUSH. THE OFFICER DIED AT THE HOSPITAL. A SECOND OFFICER EXCHANGED GUNFIRE WITH THAT SUSPECT. THE SUSPECT DIED AT THE SCENE. THE OTHER OFFICER WHO WAS SHOT IS EXPECTED TO RECOVER. A PERSON IN THE APARTMENT BUILDING WAS ALSO KILLED. THREE OTHERS ALSO WOUNDED, INCLUDING A MINNEAPOLIS FIREFIGHTER. POLICE CHIEF BRIAN O'HARA. SPEAKING ABOUT THE DIFFICULT LOSS OVERNIGHT. THIS IS THE WORST CALL A POLICE CHIEF CAN GET. IS THAT ONE OF YOUR OWN HAS GIVEN THEIR LIFE IN THE LINE OF DUTY? IT'S BEYOND COMPREHENSION. TODAY IS A SAD DAY FOR THE MINNEAPOLIS POLICE DEPARTMENT AND FOR THE CITY OF MINNEAPOLIS. AND I ASK THAT YOU REMEMBER THE DANGERS THAT OUR POLICE OFFICERS ARE WILLING TO FACE DAY AND NIGHT. AND THE PRICE THEY MIGHT ULTIMATELY HAVE TO PAY. WELL, GOVERNOR TIM WALZ HAS ORDERED THAT FLAGS FLY AT HALF STAFF TODAY IN MITCHELL'S HONOR. THE GOVERNOR SPOKE LAST NIGHT ABOUT THE TRAGIC LOSS AND THIS EPIDEMIC OF GUN VIOLENCE. THESE PRESS CONFERENCES CANNOT BE THE NORM. THE FUNERALS WE ATTEND AND THE FOLKS WHO WERE WILLING TO SERVE AT A TIME. THIS IS REALLY HARD JOB. IT'S A REALLY HARD JOB, AND IT'S REALLY HARD WITH LOTS OF GUNS ON THE STREET. AND IT'S REALLY HARD IF THOSE FOLKS CAN'T FEEL US UNIFIED BEHIND THEM TO MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE PROVIDING EVERY SINGLE THING WE CAN TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY GET WHAT THEY NEED TO DO THEIR JOB TO PROTECT ALL OF US, BUT TO PROTECT THEMSELVES. THEIR FAMILIES DESERVE TO KNOW THEY'RE COMING HOME. MITCHELL IS THE FIRST MINNEAPOLIS POLICE OFFICER TO BE SHOT AND KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY. THE LAST ONE, 2002. NOW, IN THE MEANTIME, POLICE OFFICERS FROM ACROSS THE AREA, THEY'LL BE IN MINNEAPOLIS HELPING THE LAW ENFORCEMENT HERE WHILE THE DEPARTMENT COPES WITH THIS HORRIFIC LOSS.
