it's the first day of 49ers training camp with pads and we may have gotten our first roster un seeding potentially someone jumping uh someone in the depth chart and it is in the form of the running back position now we understand the 49ers are led by Christian mcaffrey he is rb1 it's not up for debate there's no questioning it Christian mcav will never lose his job as long as he's healthy and a member of the San Francisco 49ers it's just not going to happen we know this but what we do know is that behind Christian mcaffrey there has been a battle somewhat percolating between Elijah Mitchell and Jordan Mason and when you think about it the San Francisco 49ers did draft Isaac gendo they also went out and got Cody Shader as an undrafted free agent and they brought in Patrick Taylor in free agency well we have our first official unofficial unofficial official I don't know it's not official yet but it does seem like Jordan Mason might have jumped Elijah Mitchell for the rb2 spot behind Christian mcaffrey because as we know Elijah Mitchell has been a kind of lock for that rb2 if he's healthy and Jordan Mason has just been kind of a special team guy and gets a carry here or there every once once in a while but he hasn't been used however whenever training camp comes around Jordan Mason is hyped quite a bit and I am one of those people who have been a part of the Jordan Mason Hive and it all started when he was a rookie when he came in as an undrafted free agent behind third round draft pick Ty Davis price who was just drafted and then just the year before Trey Surman who the 49ers traded up into the third round to select and they also had jichael Hasty on the squad who was having a strong Camp as well well Jordan Mason beat out all three of those guys none of those guys are on the 49ers roster anymore because of Jordan Mason and now it appears he has taken a another step this time in front of Elijah Mitchell and I'll tell you how that has come to fruition today was the first day of pads and Christian mcaffrey was not participating looked like to be a schedule rest day no Nick Bosa obviously no Trent or auk KD was used very sparingly today I don't even think he will participated in the team period so and we know there's issues up front with the 49ers offensive line so smart probably by K shanan not to put their work horse running back in potential danger running behind a rookie and some some new guys up front but it was Jordan Mason who got the first Carry of practice today and the reason why this is significant is because it's typically been Elijah Mitchell who would be the first to get that carry and when KY Shanahan was asked about this scenario in the press conference afterwards he said nothing against Elijah but JP runs at a high level and I mean it it's become almost kind of a running joke on Twitter that Kyle shanan just seemingly never says a ton of great things about Jordan Mason just in the sense of like he likes Elijah and you know Jordan has G garnered a lot of hype and we just haven't heard a whole lot from KY shanan in that regard so you know Twitter Twitter does its thing and and has fun with it well this is like the first time that we've like like oh I mean and this is again it's not to say that kaan has never heaped praise on Jordan Mason uh it's a bit of a running joke on Twitter but again I think it's significant I think it's signifies that there one is a true competition for that rb2 spot and it might be an indication that Jordan has proven that he can carry that load you know Elijah Mitchell did have a fumble during Friday's practice and you know Jordan Mason has been running extremely well and you can make the case that with Christian McCaffrey being used as sparingly as he has been that Jordan Mason has been the best running back in training camp I don't think that's a stretch by any means and so it does make sense then for Jordan Mason to get that bump but what does it mean in the long run do we think Jordan Mason is going to like take a strangle hold on the rb2 spot if he does is that yet another running back that Jordan Mason has made Expendable CU he's been he's been knocking him down on his way to the top of the 4900 depth chart so I I don't know it it's going to be very fascinating development I think of training camp to just kind of watch this play out because I also do believe that Elijah Mitchell and Jordan Mason are in the final years of their deals which means they both of them could be potentially trade candidates or extension candidates so it's going to be fascinating to see how this little battle plays out because it could correlate to a roster move when the 53 man roster is ultimately cut because if Cody Shrader comes out and he looks like a guy that could earn a roster spot and Isaac gendo as well who's obviously dealing with a bit of a hamstring injury and they feel they can get a turn on Elijah does that make Elijah so these are all just things that we think about when it comes to building out rosters and seeing who's taking steps forward Etc and then what that means from a roster building standpoint so I think this is going to be a very fascinating thing to monitor obviously I'm high on Jordan Mason and to be honest I've been high on Elijah Mitchell uh but so far from what I've seen in Camp the I definitely believe that Jordan Mason has been the better running back so what what does that look like who wins this job because kind of feels like we got a bit of a competition on our hands and to be fair there's competitions all across the roster this is football at the end of the day you should be competing iron sharpens iron whatever cliche you want to throw at it you want to see these guys battling it out and especially with Christian mcaffrey taking on such a large workload last year I think also too would make sense for the 49ers to give him more rest in certain situations to allow him to stay fresh for not only a 17 Game season but potentially upwards to 20 games with the postseason so integrating a backup running back more often could benefit Christian mcaffry and the offense in the long run and that just seems like something that's been you know Kyle hasn't been Ultra willing to take the foot off the you know figurative Christian mcaffrey gas pedal but maybe with Jordan performances uh Jordan Mason's performances this off season maybe just maybe Kyle Shanahan will open up a little bit to the notion of giving more carries to the rb2 on the roster the question remains though who will be the rb2 when the season begins that's a question I'm asking you and I want to see your comments down below and as always make sure to like And subscribe for more updates
