JESSICA GUAY, KDKA NEWS. >> JESSICA THANK YOU. >>> IT WAS A TERRIFYING FEW MINUTES FOR PEOPLE IN MORGANTOWN LAST NIGHT AS A SEVERE STORMER TO THE ROOF OF A BUILDING AND UPROOTED TREES AND PUT MORE THAN 20 PEOPLE OUT OF THEIR HOMES. THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAID IT WAS NOT A TORNADO BUT STRAIGHT-LINE WINDS. WE HAVE MORE FROM MORGANTOWN WITH HOW PEOPLE ARE PICKING UP THE PIECES. >> Reporter: KIM, I WANT TO SHOW YOU THE AFTERMATH OF LAST NIGHT'S STORM. TAKE A LOOK AT THIS. WORKERS LEFT TO PICK UP THE PIECES AFTER WINDS UP TO 100 MILES PER HOUR TORE THE ROOF RIGHT OFF LEAVING DEBRIS SCATTERED ACROSS THE PARKING LOT. >> IT SOUNDED LIKE A LOCOMOTIVE COMING THROUGH. >> Reporter: HE DESCRIBES THE SOUND HE HEARD BEFORE INTENSE WINDS TORE THROUGH THE MORGANTOWN AREA SUNDAY NIGHT. YOU CAN DRIVE AROUND HERE FOR MILES WITHOUT SEEING ANY DAMAGE. BUT IN THIS ONE SPOT IT LOOKS LIKE THE STORM HAD JUST SWOOPED DOWN ON TOP OF THEM TEARING THE ROOF OFF THE FORMER RAMADA INN. HE CONSIDERED HIMSELF LUCKY. >> I AM SURPRISED. I LIVE JUST OVER THE HILL AND IT COULD HAVE COME STRAIGHT OVER HERE, YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN? >> Reporter: THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE EXAMINED ALL OF THIS AND SAID IT'S THE RESULT OF STRAIGHT-LINE WINDS, MEASURED AT GROUND LEVEL FOR 60 TO 70 MILES PER HOUR AND WINDS ON THE ROOF OF THIS BUILDING WERE CLOSER TO 90 TO 100 MILES PER HOUR. >> THIS HOTEL IS UP ON THE HILL. YOU KNOW, THERE IS NOTHING BLOCKING IT, AND YOU GO FURTHER UP, AND THAT SHOWS HOW FAST A THUNDERSTORM CAN INCREASE WITH HEIGHT. >> Reporter: THE WINDS WERE SO STRONG THEY PICKED UP A 25- POUND AIR COMPRESSOR AND BLEW TO ACROSS THE PARKING LOT. PEOPLE ARE STAYING IN EMERGENCY SHELTERS. >> WE ARE GRATEFUL THAT NO ONE WAS INJURED, NO ONE IN THE BARTLETT HOUSE THAT WAS IN WERE INJURED. >> Reporter: THIS BUILDING WAS TRANSFORMED INTO NON-PROFIT HUB CALLED PEOPLE'S HOPE, AIMED AT HELPING PEOPLE WITH SUBSTANCE ABUSE ISSUES AND HOMELESSNESS AND HOUSES HEALTH SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS INCLUDING THE SALVATION ARMY. THE BUILDING WAS CONDEMNED. THE WORKERS HAVE ALREADY STARTED ON A NEW ROOF. >> THERE IS SOMEONE WHO COULD BE AFFECTED MUCH WORSE. BUT WE ARE GRATEFUL THAT WE HAVE THE RESOURCES TO HELP OTHERS
