Hello everyone and welcome to the new video Astronauts Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams went to the International Space Station last June in the Boeing Starliner space craft for a mission of only a few days in space but their trip was delayed due to technical reasons . stay in ISS i mean stay in International Space Station I wonder if they will have food to survive for that long I heard many people say in my childhood that astronauts eat capsule tablets later realized it was just nonsense then what do astronauts eat in space space exploration is the most interesting and curious thing One of the interesting aspects of space travel is how astronauts live, work and survive. Among the many challenges they face, one of the most critical is how they eat and stay nourished during their missions. On Earth, food is readily available. Eating is a simple task . Today I'm going to talk about what astronauts eat in space, how they prepare their food, how they stay healthy in zero gravity, and before we get into the specifics of what astronauts eat, it's important to understand the unique challenges they face when it comes to food in space. Everything including food and liquid is pulled down but in space there is microgravity which means things including food float around which makes eating in space quite different from what we experience on Earth Microgravity can cause food crumbs and liquids to float away increasing the risk of accidents These small particles can interfere with spacecraft equipment or astronauts Inhalation can cause serious health problems, so food for astronauts is specially designed to minimize these risks and ensure that it can be eaten safely in a zero- gravity environment . They mostly ate pureed, paste - like foods packaged in tubes. These early space foods were not very appealing, but they served the purpose of providing essential nutrients in a safe form . Some of the main types of space food are thermo-stabilized foods that have been treated to kill bacteria and enzymes that can cause spoilage . To eat these foods, astronauts use a spoon or fork to open the bag or can just as they would on Earth.Freeze drying is a process that removes almost all of the water from the food. The water they use comes from the space shuttle's life support systems and moisture from the air Water from various sources, including urine, is recycled and purified After rehydration, freeze-dried foods look and taste similar to those on Earth Common freeze-dried foods include fruits, soups, pasta dishes Astronauts enjoy snacks like people on Earth Space snacks are similar to those available on Earth, such as nuts, granola bars, cookies Foods However , these snacks are packaged in a way that ensures that they do not create a mess or easily spill over into the micrograph. This helps keep the spacecraft clean and prevents accidental damage to equipment. The pouches are designed to prevent them from floating around and causing problems.Water, coffee, tea, and fruit juice are some of the beverages available to astronauts. Fresh fruits and vegetables, such as apples, oranges, and carrots, are frequently sent into space in resupply machines. These foods are highly valued by spaceflight because they provide a taste of home and are a welcome change from the regular space diet. Space missions are long and challenging, so special treats are sometimes sent to boost morale. These treats are not a regular part of the meal, but they are a comforting reminder of life on Earth. Astronauts need to stay healthy and fit during their missions , so their diet is carefully planned. Nutritionists employ food scientists, etc. The number of calories an astronaut needs depends on various factors including their age, weight, and the physical demands of their mission. Generally, astronauts need 2500 to 3000 calories per day . Astronauts may require more calories to fuel their bodies . Foods such as breads and fruits are good sources of carbohydrates These foods are included in various forms such as thermo-stabilized food or dried options Fats are an integral part of the diet providing long-lasting energy and help in the absorption of vitamins Nuts seeds and oils are included in the space diet to provide healthy fats Some foods also contain fats from meat or dairy products Vitamins and minerals are essential for overall health, especially in space, where the body does not process nutrients as efficiently as on Earth. Staying hydrated in space is just as important as on Earth.Astronauts need to drink enough fluids to maintain their physical activity and prevent dehydration. To maintain proper hydration, they consume water as well as rehydrating beverages such as fruit juices and electrolyte drinks.Food preparation in space is not as simple as on Earth. There are no kitchens or stoves. However , space agencies have developed innovative heaters to ensure that astronauts can easily enjoy their meals. Space astronauts do not have traditional stoves, but special food heating facilities are available for astronauts. These warmers are small, portable ovens that use electricity to heat food bags or cans . The pouch can be opened and eaten directly from the pouch Freeze-dried foods must be rehydrated before being eaten by astronauts Water is injected into the pouch using a specially designed water dispenser The process involves the amount of water required and the time required for rehydration varies depending on the food Once the food is fully rehydrated, it is ready-to-eat forks in space Knives use traditional utensils such as spoons but are specially designed for the environment. For example , the handle may be longer to facilitate use in microgravity or have magnets to prevent them from spilling. Some foods are eaten directly from their pouches with a spoon or fork. Astronauts need to clean up just as they do on Earth. However, water is a precious resource in space, so instead of water, astronauts use these wipes to clean their utensils, food bags, and surfaces where food has been eaten.Used wipes and any leftover food and packaging are stored in a waste container for later disposal . There are challenges. One concern is how microgravity affects digestion. On Earth , gravity helps move food through the digestive system . Although the lack of gravity in space may blind this process, studies have shown that astronauts can digest food in space just as they do on Earth. Space missions can be experienced for months or years so food must have a long shelf life. Most space foods are designed to last for years without refrigeration. This is achieved through processes such as thermo-stabilization, freeze-drying, and packaging . Essential to maintaining morale Space agencies work hard to provide a varied menu with different flavors and textures Astronauts are involved in food selection before a mission and they often do taste tests to make sure they enjoy the food Condiments like salt, pepper, ketchup, hot sauce and are given in liquid or powder form Food plays an important role in mental well-being, especially In the isolated and stressful environment of space, space travelers are far from home, so familiar foods and comforts provide a sense of normalcy. Space agencies recognize this and make efforts to include foods that astronauts enjoy and remind them of home.Special occasions such as holidays or birthdays are marked with special foods or treats to boost morale and create a celebratory mood.Astronauts come from diverse cultural backgrounds. Taking into account that some astronauts may have dietary restrictions or preferences, such as vegetarianism or allergies. For example, astronauts from different countries may have different staple foods, such as rice pasta or bread. Some astronauts may have dietary restrictions or preferences, such as vegetarianism or allergies . Factors are carefully considered New challenges and opportunities for space food arise with the prospect of long-distance missions to the Moon, Mars and beyond Space food growing is one of the hottest areas of research Growing plants in space provides a sustainable source of clean food and reduces the need for resupply missions from Earth Using hydroponic systems that allow plants to grow without soil Vegetables, herbs, and even fruits in space Growing Scientists are experimenting with these systems that provide plants with water and nutrients and light to mimic conditions they would have on Earth Astronauts successfully growing and eating spinach, radishes and other crops on the ISS show promising results 3D printing food is another innovative idea 3D food printers customize food Using edible materials such as dough purees and pastes to create layer by layer, this technology allows astronauts to create a wide variety of dishes with different flavors, textures and shapes, enabling them to tailor food to their specific nutritional needs while ensuring the right balance of nutrients . It has the potential to revolutionize how food is prepared and consumed.Space agencies are looking for ways to reduce waste and make space food packaging more sustainable.Current packaging methods generate significant amounts of waste that must be stored and eventually disposed of. Help reduce environmental impact and make them more sustainable on a long-term basis. As our understanding of nutrition and science advances, the concept of personalized nutrition is gaining attention. In the future, each astronaut's unique genetic makeup and health status can tailor space meals to mission requirements . This will ensure that they receive and prevent common problems faced by astronauts, such as loss of bone density, muscle atrophy, and immune system suppression.Dieting in space is a complex and fascinating process that involves careful planning, advanced technology, and a deep understanding of nutrition and human physiology. Relying on specially designed foods to maintain mental well-being As space exploration advances, the future of space food holds exciting possibilities, from growing crops in space to 3D printing customized meals for long-duration missions. These innovations will play a critical role in supporting and ensuring that astronauts can thrive.Ultimately, space food is not just about sustenance, it's about comfort, morality, and the human experience. As astronauts venture further into space, their food will continue to be an integral part of their journey.
