ladies and gentlemen welcome to another sold out Wrigley Field as we get set for the pills and the Chicago Cubs Jake garrietta and the rest of the Cubs have taken the field all the pregame festivities are complete and we're ready for a little baseball let's take a look at the Phillies lineup it's brought to you by Xfinity the official entertainment provider of the Philadelphia Phillies it'll be Cesar Hernandez leading it off again in second base they know nubo Herrera playing center field Michael Franco bats third place third Ryan Howard back in the lineup hitting Cleanup in first base Carlos Ruiz does the catching Cody ashees and left field batting Sixth and the bottom third of Galvis Brown and yes Cole Hamels who possibly is making his final start in the Phillies uniform only time will tell as Jake Arrieta will be making his 20th start he's going nowhere for the Cubs 11-5 a 2.52 earned run average that's ninth best in the National League he's only allowed eight home runs but has not allowed a home run in quite some time and the Budweiser Scouting Report Matt on Jake Arrieta very good four pitches he'll average about 94.4 in his fastball 19 starts this year 15 quality starts only four times as the opponent scored four runs or less four runs Augusta how about these numbers change out the Legacy in 118. curveball a buck 11. slider 206 and now they're raking his fastball 277 apparently so all his pitches are working very well right now well time for the Nissan keys to the game first for me most important is used Cole ham was used to Cutter more makes you change up even better and arietta attacked the fastball you do not want to get the two strikes with that curveball or the slider because that is his strikeout pitch well here's the first pitch of the game Cesar Hernandez leads it off it's fastball in there so we're underway 95 miles an hour on that fastball right at the knees [Applause] so he's our 274 with a home run in 23 RBIs who had two hits yesterday and he chops one back towards shortstop Castro right around the bag oh he waited too long he nearly beat that one Cesar's wondering if he got across the back before the throw Here Comes Pete McCannon Cesar immediately pointed toward the Dugout that was an awfully close play and it shouldn't have been that close I thought he beat it for a moment but Pete McCannon goes down the stairs and it's going to be 6-3 on the put out if you sleep you slip defense he's gonna make it very close at first base we'll see right here ball goes in the glove right there I guess by a half step they got him would have been interesting to see if Caesar would have stepped in front of the bag and stood on top of the bag I know we've talked about that with uh Cesar and a couple other guys about you know striding toward the base here's odobo he was up for one as a pinch hitter yesterday swings at the first pitch and it's 0-1 odubel hitting 274. he has a rookie leading 20 doubles on the year with two triples [Applause] and we've heard a lot about the curveball for Marietta last year it was about the slider well whatever he's doing his secondary pitches are extremely good no balls and two strikes to Herrera ball up and in one and two good luck at McDonald's Philly's home run jackpot contestant is Matt Moore of Wyomissing Phillies at home run at today's ball game then Matt will win 100 dollars one ball and two strikes and now time is called Herrera waited as long as he possibly could home plate umpire is the veteran Phil Cousy Jerry Davis the crew chief at first will little is at second Tony Randazzo around a third outside and it's two balls and two strikes [Applause] this evolution of Jake Arrieta was expected when he was with the Baltimore Orioles Orioles expected that he would be this good for them much sooner they may have rushed him a little bit it's a tad inside three and two but they wound up trading him I don't want to say for peanuts but they wound up trading him here to the Cubs and what they got was Steve Clevenger and Scott Feldman Joe Madden inherited Jake arriette and he's darn happy that he did fouled away and it remains three and two [Applause] last year he won 10 games he was injured in the early part of the Season won 10 games and 25 starts averaged over a strikeout for inning pitched he credited the slider a season ago because he threw it 29 of the time he had only thrown at 14 and Chris basio said man you got to get that more involved in the count he just got odubo Herrera awkwardly on a 97 mile an hour fastball they're two outs oh look at these comparisons Matt between Baltimore and the Cubs I mean 20 and 25 with Baltimore but the era almost three runs higher with the Orioles compared to the Cubs I mean he's getting to a place where he's feeling comfortable he's figuring out what kind of pitcher he is he's a power pitcher as we just saw with the 97 mile an hour fastball with very good movement Michael Franco's the batter he takes up high now I will say though his slider is more of a true cutter you're usually going about seven or eight miles less than your fastball he's known as cutter at 92 miles an hour well there it is right there the scoreboard had 90 on a slider and then he threw a pitch earlier see right here starts inner half doesn't move much it's just what you call the BET misser yep you are right Franco slams one out towards center field over the head of Fowler and it's going to one Hop Off The Ivy and it's just going to drop at the base of the brick wall so a two out double for Michael Franco well that's a good sign that ends an oh for sixth stretch for him and that's his 15th double of the year well it's a high Fastball Out of the strike zone that's a nice job getting hands on top of the barrel a message as to how shallow Fowler plays the center field I Slim Right There nice to see him go back up the middle on a base hit yeah I think he's been getting a little pull happy lately as we talked about yesterday Tom and that'll bring Howard to the plate for a chance to give the Phillies an early lead now with the runner at second base the the overshift on the right side is a little lighter for Ryan Howard it's not as deep so that usually benefits him takes outside 1-0 Matt that is the 164th double of the year for the Phillies I bring that up because they have gradually started climbing the charts and not only extra base hits but in the category of doubles and triples for a good portion of the year the Phillies were down toward the bottom of the national league in extra base hits overall and in those two categories now they're still down toward the bottom with home runs but they now have 164 doubles which is sixth in the National League they have 20 triples which is fifth in the National League 2-0 to Howard Howard rolls one over to second base threw him a curve ball and the put out goes 4-3 and the side is retired no runs one hit and one man left middle of the first it's the Phillies nothing Cole Hamels going to work against the Cubs let's take a look at Joe Madden's lineup for this afternoon's ball game he was a little upset with the strike zone in yesterday's game it's brought to you by Xfinity the official entertainment provider in the Philadelphia Phillies Fowler Brian and Rizzo followed by Solaire donorpia and Castro the shortstop the bottom third of David Ross Jake arrietta and Addison Russell and they will face left-hander Cole Hamels Hamels on the year five and seven an era just a hair under four which is so obscure for Cole Hamilton this juncture of the season but he's out he's a lot a lot of base runners and he's allowed his share home runs so far this season that's all he has and he's coming off two very bad outings and you've mentioned not throwing enough strikes Budweiser scuttering Port he's 3-1 versus a cup 2-4-0 era legs hitting a buck 95 versus his change up a buck 27 versus a curveball 12 quality starts and remember I would like to see him get down this year at this outing he's averaging just over like 16.5 pitches per inning which doesn't allow him to get very deep into games anymore first batter who faces Dexter Fowler and he delivers a fastball High over the years a lot of that has been due to Hamels allowing a lot of foul balls now those foul balls have really picked up in recent starts [Applause] two balls no strikes to Fowler oh we're hitting uh 236 on the year eight homers well velocity is good today three straight fastballs in the area of 94 miles an hour he usually dictates that health is not an issue and it's not [Applause] change up low [Applause] and there's ball four so Fowler draws a walk during the 2015 season Turkey Hill the official ice cream of the Phillies will contribute 100 for each Philly's Victory and five cents reached carton of Philly's Grand Slam ice cream sold to support the Phillies youth baseball and softball programs seemingly where Hamels has run into trouble too he's been concentrating on the base runner a little bit it seems like he's changed his mechanics at times as Bryant lifts one in the air to left center field as she says he has it and he comes running and the wind is blowing in this afternoon the faithful here in Chicago thought that had a chance to get out off the bat it's kind of different than yesterday yesterday went blowing out today going in from Right Center [Applause] [Music] if I was a pitcher which I'm not the most smart which I'm not real smart I would say I would pitch right-handers away and make them hit it into the jaws of the wind in right field yeah I think that did have an effect on that fly ball right there Anthony Rizzo's the batter Rizzo one for four yesterday he was hit by a pitch by the way that walk for Hamels was only the fourth lead off walk any inning this year [Applause] Rizzo has 16 home runs 51 RBIs one of those players that plays every day that's impressive though it's only the fourth walk for leading off an inning yeah considering his struggles yeah over the last couple starts I think it tells you he's been hit I mean we've shown the numbers and you've read about the numbers 14 earned runs in his last six of the third that's two starts that's an era of 19.89 the second base this could be two Hernandez hope he had trouble getting out of his glove so they won't be able to turn to four six on the put out at second base they do get the lead Runner [Applause] and a fielder's choice I just got Bob in the world but it kind of turned it a little bit tried a little quick to get the ball in the pan plus the ball wasn't him extremely hard on the ground well that'll bring up the largest human being on the field today check that too late they can't now yeah he's already in the box and Hamels is on the rubber so there's nothing they can do about it they want to check about to see if Freddie galbos was on the bag when he caught the ball yeah and there is no neighborhood play anymore they can check on that but it's too late [Applause] all right so Madden's gonna go out and talk to will little the second base umpire it's not reviewable as we mentioned because the pitcher was on the rubber oh my goodness he's nowhere near the second basebag I totally missed that I mean he's nowhere near the second baseman yeah Hamels was on the Rubber and the batter was in the box so they can't review it and that is a huge break for the Phillies Matt I don't know if it was our depth perception or what but I didn't even see that I wasn't looking I was watching the first base to see how Rizzo was running down the line wow well so Solaire is the batter 261 with five homers and 26 RBIs wins one just foul pen doesn't move watch it again here's how quick it is [Applause] sure if the Umpire at second will little had the angle he was in front of the bag which is kind of the way we're looking Runner goes pitches High throw to second base is not in time stolen base number 14. for a big man he does move well for big man I think a lot of people sleep on them you know they don't worry about him trying to steal bases don't pay attention to him a whole lot but he gets extremely good jump he gets almost like a running jump dudes with the strong photo second base [Applause] one ball one strike to Solaire who is hit in 11 of his last 15 games that's brought his average to 261. [Applause] yesterday Chicago was 0 for eight with runners in scoring position they've got a runner and scoring position here and it's in the dirt three and one [Applause] on Deck batter is star is a Christian orphea [Applause] good change up and it's three and two [Applause] solar is listed at six foot four 215. the 215 is rather conservative he won't buy us today when we're outside the Dugout and he looks larger than six foot four [Applause] to back change Upson the side is retired well the go-to pitch Cole Hamels change up it's probably the best in baseball at times and he's able to pick up a strikeout to wrap up the bottom of the first the Cubs leave one in scoring position just like the fills and we'll go to the seconds great sunshiny afternoon a little cloud cover earlier today but the clouds have whipped away Ruiz takes a strike from Jake Arrieta current conditions 91. wins the Southwest at 11 miles it was hot down there outside 1-1 [Applause] I was impressed that Murph was not as red as a lobster yesterday after the game only a half a bottle your neck was burned pretty good yesterday well I'm currently hiding underneath the uh got here with the camera guy where are you at you can't see me I can't now you can now I can oh I see you yeah it's gonna be even hotter though underneath there nope it's nice down here outside [Applause] two balls two strikes about three feet away from uh Murph is Andres Blanco talking to Cesar Hernandez about turns getting the ball to second base it looks like we see that a lot Whitey doing those uh little teaching moments he's got a great relationship with uh his fellow Latin players he really has a great relationship with everybody [Applause] just watched him sort of yeah see they're trying to kind of going over what he could do to get rid of a quicker it looks like Cesar saying yeah the ball jumped up on me Carlos takes up and in and it's three and two [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] well it's important to have those type of players while he takes care of the Latinos the infielders apple one takes care of the bullpen friendship he takes care of everybody yeah coaches media fans probably going to lead out Andres too being a very good coach down the road if he chooses to three balls two strikes and Carlos takes outside ball four eight pitch at bat leads to a walk and Aria doesn't walk a lot of guys that's only the 29th walk of the season for him and 129 and two-thirds innings tonight on Comcast SportsNet check out a special Encore edition of Bob with World Cup champion Carly Lloyd watch breakfast on Broad in prime time tonight at 8 right here on Comcast SportsNet so here's Cody aschie Cody was talking today before the ball game about both of his extra base hits yesterday as he takes a fastball 2-1 I said I thought that ball you hit late in the game was out off the bat he said so did I said I got to stop hitting it right towards center field I got to pull it a little bit more he also did not go back to watch film as he bumps back toward the mound Ruiz is going to be out at second with a good throw they say that the Bobble occurred on the exchange and the out was already recorded So the putout goes one to six anyway Cody said he was not going to go back and watch the Pitch where Lester thought he was punched out on before the two-run double early in the game he said he's gonna he watched the the double but he didn't watch the Pitch before that that's because you always watch something good yeah something positive he said he was convinced though that it wasn't a strike when it came across the plate here's Freddie Galvez with the runner at first is it back to the net 0-1 well this is the one we're talking about he said he's convinced it was inside well the only way you're going to be able to tell us if you had a camera right over top of Home Plate looking straight down really that's the only way you're going to determine because it might have came around the inside corner might sound like a hitter right now yes you are but I that's kind of what he was saying one ball one strike to Galvis with the runner at first I think Cody by the way on that bunt was trying to bunted up the Third Base Line This is the shift didn't get there [Applause] yep get the top row put an umbrella up nobody's going to complain although if I were him I would latch it onto the fence instead of holding it the whole time I get tiring after a while the Miss Galvez strikes out two away second strikeout for arietta both structured so far have come off 96 mile an hour fastball right there up out of the Zone a little bit and the one to a double was 97 front door sinker now Dominic Brown he kind of talked about Dominic before the ball game today hitting 229 with no homers and eight RBIs he said obviously they'd like to see more power out of Dominic Brown he said but uh you know he is getting hits over the last uh several games so it's hard to to try to change something he said but they've been waiting all year for the power numbers to kind of pick up he said it is surprising that he does not have a home run here in the big leagues he said but he didn't hit many in the miners which is true said that he is not a run scorer he is should be a run producer [Applause] Duo pitches fouled back I would agree I would agree that uh a little disappointing that the has no home runs yet we talked about baby steps about the average of uh getting the average up slower he's getting some Knocks long conversation about a weekend said he was trying way too hard when he came back up trying to trust people uh trying to impress too many people it's that one sharply on one hop but right at Rizzo side is retired three unassisted no runs no hits and one man left will move to the bottom of the second inning till he's nothing and the Cubs nothing well you can see Lake Michigan uh in the backdrop there were a lot of boats that were out there today it was actually kind of rough the water looked rough as we were driving in but it was a little cloudier now the sun is drenching the playing field there could be a lot of folks out on the uh the beaches on Lake Michigan here's Chris donorfia to lead it off and he'll take a strike 0-1 canarfield had a pinch hit in yesterday's ball game hitting 302 [Applause] . breaking ball and it's all in tune last four pitches three chains ups and a curveball kind of lead you to believe that he still doesn't have feel for his fastball just yet there's the fastball it's fouled away 95 according to our gun here [Applause] [Music] [Applause] fastball on a call strike three I think he shocked him with that pitch I think he shocked him that he called it a strike well that too What a Way Starlin Castro is coming up let's check in with Greg Murphy well that certainly is good to see out of Cole Hamels and that's what Bob McClure and uh and Pete McKinnon are looking for out of Cole Hamels today as you guys mentioned at the top of the show you know he's had his share of troubles as Cole Hamels in the month of July and and it leads you to wonder why what is going wrong for Cole Hamels well with the help of our folks friends at Bloomberg Sports you take a look at uh his whip that's of course walks and hits Innings pitched early in the season 1.15 so just over one on average one base runner per inning but then you get into the month of July and he's averaging over two base runners per Innings it's partly because of walks partly because of hits as well and then you take a look at that other column that is right-handed batters and what they've been able to do against his change up 4-19 against his change up in the month of July that compared to 237 for the rest of the season so Matt you brought it up right at the beginning of the show one of your keys to the game is that he's got to throw his cutter better because that's going to make his change up better you know it's it's just it all works together especially for a guy like Cole Hamels he hasn't been very sharp in the month of July but hoping to turn that around today absolutely Murphy when you continue to not being able to throw your cutter inside for a purpose it could be a strike it can be a uh get guys off the plate all of a sudden that home plate becomes a little bigger guys start looking inside as a right-handed hitter now if you can't throw it in there for strikes or you're not thrown in there for a purpose they start looking up over the plate and that's the reason why the change-ups have been getting hit hopefully he has kind of figured some of that out he did have a bullpen session as uh he normally does and they were trying to work on some of those things the change up there and it's one ball one strike he said my track record speeds for itself the last two starts have not been up to my standards he said sometimes you just pitch yourself into a rut and that's essentially where I feel like I am right now what I've noticed different today with Cole Hamels is that everything is in slow motion now for him his delivery his turn of his body his arm going forward his approach towards the home plate everything is a lot it's a little slower motion oh he gets two strikeouts in the inning he threw a boatload of strikes in this hitting against the the Cubs offense so he struck out the first batter and he strikes out the last batter David Ross three overall we'll head to the third here at Wrigley Fields what are you looking over at the flags the field flag yeah no that's not it what about the right field flag no they won't stop stop moving oh hammers will lead it off here in the third and Hamill swings at the first pitch and a towing one [Applause] 's on the year hitting a buck 39. no homers no RBIs on the end or just off the inside corner [Applause] so I get Abyss [Applause] now they're back to the middle and it's fielded easily by arietta one away here in the third and back to the top of the order for Cesar Hernandez All right we have to make sure that we emphasize on this question Matt that the answer they go in as they have to go in as a cup because you can look up at those flags and there's some guys up there that you can pop on that list so the Greg Maddox did not go in as a kid did not go in as a cub would he go in as a brave check swing by Hernandez they'll peel no swing and it's one ball and no strikes Cesar grounded out to shortstop his first time up five of the seven outs for arietta have been on the ground so that's somebody that's pounding the strike zone with late movement yep and that last pitch to Cesar was a nasty 92 mile an hour cut slider whatever you want to call there it is again [Applause] it's got a little bit you know he has better stuff but he's got a little bit emotion wise like David Buchanan where he's kind of rocks back a little bit before he comes forward I love his wind up it's simple it's very simple step in easy gas at 96. one of all two strikes to Cesar Cesar hitting 3 30 in his last seven last 27 games [Applause] [Applause] strikeout number three so he's got a strikeout in each inning so far which is kind of what we talked about it's now time for you to tweet your strongest fan photo use hashtag Philly photo data strong fan that's hashtag phillyphoto data strong fan and you just might see yourself in an upcoming broadcast brought to you by T-Mobile two away and here's odubel Herrera a little bit of a little bit of trouble with arietta this first step back [Applause] [Music] this is one toward left field and that's going to be out of the reach of donorfi it's going to go to the corner and odubel is going to get to at least second that's where he'll put the brakes on two out double his 21st of the year [Applause] try to do too much with that no he didn't they're kind of surprised that the ball actually stayed Fair nice easy swing foot down early right there kind of shock that it actually stayed Fair [Applause] so here's Franco he doubled his first time up Phillies have two hits today and both are doubles [Applause] just a bit outside with that first fastball and a two-in-one [Applause] should say 1-0 good job by Ross two balls no strikes today's game is also available in Spanish just use the sap button on your television or change the language through the menu cable box Boys Are Back In Philadelphia calling today's game Bill Angel and will [Applause] breaking ball and it's 3-0 [Applause] [Applause] almost like he worked around Michael Franco there to walk his second batter of the game [Applause] he seems like he's more content to face Howard than he was Franco in that spot Howard grounded out to second base his first time up so he's old for one [Applause] I think they're moving at us and Russell back a little bit lose the glove of Ross back to the screen so the runners will move up score that pass ball wow pitch it was upstairs no they're going to say pass ball that is the third pass ball for David Ross on the year and then he'll go out and talk to everybody okay this is a 96 mile an hour fastball pass ball pass ball I would love to see the guy that just scored that go down there and try to catch that ball 96. I don't think that's the I don't think that's the answer Matt I don't know if that uh you're expecting a fastball down the zone at 96 knee high and it is neck high or higher versus a hitter so we'll need to say second and third put the ball and play Ryan yeah let's get a base hit see if he can drive in two it was coming in pretty quick 96. five straight into the strike zone that one's in the air to left center field Fowler going back on it toward the track to the wall it is gone just over the basket in opposite field home run for Ryan Howard and the Phillies have taken a three-nothing lead it's the first home run Allowed by arietta and more than 50 innings three nothing fills well if you want to talk about a hanging curveball let's see the Philly fans are pretty excited doing the happy dance hanging curveball out over the plate and absolutely crushes his hands back we talked about how the hands are going back well to me it was a head down on the ball look at that head down on the ball point of contact strongman hitting the ball to left something with that for a three-run home run makes a winner of Matthew Moore of why I'm missing he's just 100 hours thanks to Ryan Howard in the McDonald's home run jackpot it is career home run number 351 for Ryan Howard that one's the opposite way by Ruiz I don't think Solaire is going to get it he won't that's going to be a fair ball and it's going to skip along the wall and Carlos Ruiz it's slowed up a little bit around first and started picking it back up again and then stopped to get it second base so he's there with a two out double [Applause] I have it the way this Innings turned all started with odubel herreras double the opposite way [Applause] Line to Line Tom that's all it is about hitting Line to Line Hey and you know what this is well and this guy has been tough to give up a tough tough to give up extra base hits and all four Phillies hits today have been extra base hits Chris basio is going out to talk to the right-hander you know we talked about That's Mike Jack Schmidt we talked about with Ryan Howard his hands getting in a power position head down on the baseball being able to stay on the ball a little longer if I'm in the home run you see right here the hands are going back the head's going down to the ball and he's going through it that's why he's driving with the left Center because it's not an easy win right now no No in fact if the win was uh blowing a little bit more that would have been up the bleachers the office away yesterday you're probably looking about three-fourths Rose of going out Chopper right side as she will be retired and the fills are retired here in the third however they take the early lead a three-run bomb off the bat of Ryan Howard he goes the opposite way and Cole Hamels has a lead that's a breaking ball he stayed with it and he fought it right through the wins the Phil's lead at three nothing as we go to the bottom of the Third Phillies have four hits today all four have been extra base hits and all four Matt have been with two out including the three-run home run by Ryan Howard Jay garrietta leads it off Marietta does have a home run this year for the Cubs [Applause] eight nine and one for Chicago it'll be Arrieta and then Addison Russell and Dexter Fowler loses the battle they hit a better walking up the stairs made it even blank [Applause] they have gotten the back of a patron as well and hit the back of that gentleman right there he's got his arms crossed and there was a beer vendor walking up the stairs it hit him as well and he didn't even blink one ball one strike the inside corner one and two boy he's throwing a lot of changeups here this afternoon a lot very good ones too fastball swung out and missed 95. that's four strikeouts for Hamels I have to keep track of that we've seen 196 mile an hour fastball today but he's basically averaging 95 with his fastball he said 95 probably seven times so far honestly I think the his slowest four-seeing fastball has been 94. he's thrown a couple of Cutters at 92 which has been his average on his fastball this year well now Addison Russell will be the batter Jack Swing foul ball and it's all in one Luis Garcia out runs Elvis arajo for that foul ball out in front of a change up Owen two and a fastball just misses inside one ball two strikes that's not a bad spot with that O2 pitch no it's a good mess it's fastball inside opens up the fastball or the change up for the curveball well there is the curveball and Hamels off the mound quickly two away that was the number nine hitter so now top of the order and it will be Dexter Fowler the walk to start the bottom of the first it's the only positive today for the Cubs well we talked about a delivery how easy it is right here you know the turn is very nice he's being able to get on top of his his curveball his change up his fastball whatever it is because the arm is being able to catch up to his body last couple starts his lower half and his upper half could so quick to home plate his arm never catches up but now it is and that's why he's been top of the ball again so the scouts who are watching here today Scouts from the Blue Jays Scouts from the Dodgers [Applause] he was former Phil Scout Dean desilis who's charting right there he's with the Toronto Blue Jays now with the Detroit Tigers during his professional career this lady right here is doing a scouting report as well yep and she's got a new wave scattering reports she's punching everything into the uh her iPhone two balls one strike to Fowler outside three in one [Applause] [Applause] over to shortstop big hop for Freddie galbus and an easy hitting four coal handles he's only allowed one ball out of the infield so far through the first three that was a Fly ball to left by Brian nothing across for the Cubs eight in a row retired by Hamilton and they'll send Freddie Galvez Dominic Brown Cole Hamels to the plate against Jake Arrieta Freddie struck out his first time up shows but offered at it and it's all in one [Applause] Owen two [Applause] Marietta had gone nine straight Innings without allowing a run against the Phillies dating back to last year he pitched a heck of a game against the Phils in 2014. seven Innings two hits nine strikeouts that day they have hit him though in past outings you just have to look at his era to know that and know the fact that he pitched a scoreless seven Innings last time out is earner and average is still over five against the fills as Galvez has retired on the ground up to shortstop what a way Dominic Brown's coming up all right Barefoot about the power numbers for Dominic Brown that Pete McCannon talked about today well they're not very good and that's what Pete McCann was talking about you know it was very interesting listening to him talk about Don Brown because he said I don't want to say too much because he doesn't want Dom to you know completely change his approach because he is getting base hits right now he has 24 base hits so far this year after being called up in the middle of June uh just over 100 played appearances at this point the problem is that he has only four extra base hits and all four of those have been doubles and and Pete said look we need Don Brown not to be a run scorer but to be a run producer and that has not happened this year now he likes the fact that he's getting on base he likes the fact that he's getting his base hits but he says ultimately if Don Brown is going to be a corner outfielder in the big leagues he's going to need to produce the way that he did a couple years back when he had that big month of May when he was hitting home runs and that that's what they're looking for so it's a fine you know kind of a juggling act for Pete McCannon trying to get the appropriate amount of time for not only Don brown but the other outfielders the young outfielders that uh that they're trying to get a good look at and to see whether or not they have a guy that can produce runs because at the end of the day that's what Don Brown has to be in order to be successful yeah he did say that he hasn't uh he has followed the reports on Aaron Altair who's done well in Triple A uh he hasn't he hasn't watched them intently but he does know what what Aaron's been doing in double A in AAA and he said that he's obviously put up solid numbers that one will leak through the left side of the infield they were playing in a pole so base hit for Brown it's that shift and it's a one out single we'll bring Cole Hamels to the plate Hamels grounded out to the pitcher his first time up they'll ask him just to try to sacrifice here I would think so and he bunts to the right nice punt sure was the most successful 2-4 on the foot out and a runner in scoring position tonight on Philly's Clubhouse we'll get you ready for Pat Pearl's Wall of Fame night on July 31st with a look back to the Phillies career that began as the number one overall pick and ended with a parade with Elvis down Broad Street plus see what all the buzz is about without field Prospect Aaron Altair Philly's Clubhouse presented by Mercedes-Benz tonight at 7 30 right here on Comcast SportsNet [Applause] Cesar Hernandez the batter now with the runner in scoring position [Applause] swinging to miss said it's all in one so here's my thought process on air um D Brown yeah give them a week put them in an area where he's going to be a guy who has an opportunity to drive in rocks so you put them in the middle of the order throw them out there for seven straight games so do that one more time yeah he hasn't hit he said fifth a couple times but as you had it he hadn't had a chance to stay in the fifth of the five all four yeah certainly not in an RBI situation today right he's in he's in an area where he is going to get pitched like an eight-hole hitter is going to get pitched to him right very tough if I walk him I walk him hopefully he goes out of the strike zone and look I'm not I'm not defending the guy I am on his side though because I still believe that the power numbers are there it's just a matter of until he finds that power swing again [Applause] inside and it's two and two to Cesar Hernandez is this not fluke for a guy to go out there and have the incredible five or six weeks that he had to put up those type of numbers and never find it again it is odd you're right you know it is I mean it's not going to be a six Six Week player that strikes out and the side is retired four strikeouts for arietta no runs one hit and one man left in scoring position middle of the fourth Phillies thanks to Orion Howard home run lead it three nothing didn't matter which way it was blowing before with Ryan Howard at the plate Howard went the opposite way with a three-run home run here's Chris Bryan his Fly ball to left field is the only out recorded in this game by an outfielder as Cole Hamels will go to work [Applause] emmels has thrown has retired nine straight hitters since the walk to Fowler to begin the bottom of the first inning that's how good he's been [Applause] a one pitch breaking ball oh and two well he's found something [Applause] well I think what helps is that he's thrown six of eleven out of 11 hitters who've thrown six first pitch strikes and out of those six pitches five of them has chain jumps to miss strikeout number five for Hamels 10 in a row retired by Cole you see Church wants it down the Zone he got it down the zone [Applause] [Music] the Rizzo reached on a fielder's Choice his first time up change up [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] good location two seamer inside 95 miles an hour [Applause] the only thing he could do with that pitch is one hit it off the shin or two hitting about three quarters of Mile foul let's see what he counters with here with the count one ball and two strikes and that one's lined out toward right field Dominic Brown hesitates for a moment that makes the catch and they're two outs [Applause] it'll bring Jorge Solaire to the blade [Music] all right well there you go his average pit speed he's forcing fastball 90-95 [Applause] Solaris struck out his first time up he just threw one soft pitch after another to him just like right there it's all in one so there defected from Cuba and picked up his residency in Haiti and signed a nine-year contract with the Cubs [Applause] 22 years old affected in 2011. so that time he was just turned 18. [Applause] her ball and it's one and two 2011 that's not when Ron Santos went into the Hall of Fame [Applause] all right so you got one nine years is upstanding it's a great contract very talented player [Applause] [Applause] with the dirt and it's three and two [Music] he had two three ball counts in the first inning third overall fourth overall yeah Fowler twice [Applause] that's something we wanted to keep an eye on too the number of foul balls there haven't been as many foul balls given up by Hamilton strictly when there's two strikes right he's been able to put hitters away swinging to miss he got him he threw him a fastball or excuse me he threw them change up at 86 miles an hour six strikeouts for Hamels side is retired in order one two three go the Cubs it's the second time today he's had at least two strikeouts in an inning and we'll move to the fifth here in Chicago swings at the first pitch grounds it to the right side Rizzo's got it fires it to arietta in time what a way double thought he had gotten there and arietta's foot was not on the bag the Alaska is Bruce Suter 2006. I wouldn't have got that clock back out of phillies.com to find a view of the winner of a Philly's prize pack I'll take two for three any day nice job Flags help a little bit but they're a little deceiving your guys up on the flagpole and left field Fergie Michael takes a strike on one [Applause] Tapper foul Owen two [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] there's the 1-2 pitch to Franco that one has scalded out toward left center field it might put a hole in the brick wall it's a one Hopper into the Ivy and it drops out after Fowler had said that it was in doesn't matter it came out quick enough that Franco has to hold up at second double of the game for Franco that's what we're talking about with all these extra base hits the Phillies have been hitting lately well there was where there's no problem with the ivy last time Ryan Howard was up Ryan is bringing the lumber brought to you by Yellowwood brand pressures treated fine that he is he gets a curveball down the Zone back in the third inning Runners on second and third and hits that thing two rows deep for a huge ring in the lumber yellow wood here's the other thing too he did that after it looked like they were working around Michael Franco whether they were or not who knows but Marietta wasn't close to the plate against Franco Howard now with 17 home runs 51 runs batted in 351 for his career that ties him with uh the great Dick Allen on the all-time list inside Chris basio going out to talk to Arrieta he's lost the strike zone again here what's that Tom I think it's safe to say that the numbers you were given earlier but the doubles the triples yeah five of the six base hits today extra base hits yeah and eight of the last 10 hits the Phillies have had for extra base hits [Applause] and it's all a good sign I mean you know again [Applause] Phillies are still in last place in the division but they've shown some signs of coming out of this malaise over the last handful of games well I like the Ambassador putting together they're they're getting at bats they're getting two out knocks they're taking advantage of other teams mistakes yeah which that didn't take earlier in the season don't mind the power numbers might not be there for home runs but the doubles are building up and that's how you start rallies with Revere and uh guys like that I mean Revere's among the leaders in triples anyway so he's going to push that number up but it's good it does put pressure on the opposition oh it does I mean and these guys are getting in the Philly centers are getting into better hitting uh hitters counts they're being patient Ryan Howard had no up you know he wasn't even thinking about swinging that 3-0 pitch he was willing to take the walk and allow the person behind you to try to drive you and the guy in front anyone well now here's Carlos Ruiz [Applause] looks like the Cubs May think about a little Bullpen action very shortly Carlos has doubled today he's also Watts Phillies have six hits [Applause] [Applause] time has called again [Applause] foreign [Music] [Music] David Ross but he couldn't get him to come out he couldn't get his attention so Carlos was just helping him out it's a catcher helping a catcher right there man just a friendly game yeah people helping people no balls one strike to Ruiz and then Carlos fights went off foul over the Phillies dugout take a look at this this is here we go Carlos looking at Ariana oops he wants a dude oh it's so great [Laughter] [Applause] down the way [Applause] [Applause] Carlos lays off it evens the count two balls and two strikes [Applause] seems safe to say the Phillies have gotten to arietta here he does not have his best stuff yeah and it's it's nice to see that through about four and a third Innings this is going to be pitch number 81. yeah he doesn't look comfortable I think about all the times that Carlos has asked for time and this at bat alone [Applause] give two pitch to Ruiz and a strength three call under the outside part of the plate Marietta has five strikeouts here today and Cody as she's coming up from our home to yours a collection of Philly's recipes the Phillies wives healthy recipe book featuring 36 favorite Tasty Recipes from Philly's players and coaches it's on sale now for 19.99 at the Majestic Clubhouse door newbies.com or by calling 877 go fills I'll be picking up a book when I get back to Philly there's pretty good recipes in there you think your macaroni and cheese would be in there Lobster lobster mac and cheese at the race go to Yahoo is up with Runners on first and second takes a breaking ball it's all in one [Applause] what'd you think of the mac and cheese today up here in the lunchroom it was good would have been better if there was Lobster in it believe it that one's a line drive caught by Rizzo hit well by ashy side is retired and a little more butter no runs one one hit then two men left middle of the fifth Philly's up three nothing over the Cubs bottom of the fifth inning Phillies three and the Cubs nothing Cole Hamels has gone through the first four Innings without allowing a hit he's only allowed one base runner the walk to Dexter Fowler back in the first inning he was erased on a fielder's choice so since the walk he's retired 12th consecutive where he's gotten 12 consecutive outs six strikeouts overall kristenorphia leaves it off a breaking ball in its own one he's throwing everything he wants to he's thrown less Cutters than we expected today yes more curveballs which I like to see because the leg was hitting 127 versus his curveball [Applause] it's Owen too last time Hamels has gone this far without allowing a hit was when he had to combine no hitter last year on Labor Day against the Braves Braves [Applause] then ironic that day he was throwing 95-96 as well but he was walking everybody true today's walk one [Applause] he's got donorfia Castro and Ross he struck the norfy out looking his first time up and shocked him with a fastball curve ball out to right field Dominic Brown is there and one out talk about foul balls and how important they are for Hamels to limit them and it's this way for any pitcher he's only had four foul balls today I mean that's huge there have been games where he's had four foul balls to the first hitter yeah splits they've been good he has 11 swings and misses and the speeds on his pitches [Applause] stroke takes low [Applause] Castro grounded out to third his first time up he just tapped it [Applause] [Applause] [Music] two balls one strike to Castro [Applause] cops came into today's ball game out of the wild card they were half game up yesterday they lost the Giants won the Giants are now a half game ahead of them Pittsburgh and San Francisco have the wild card at this point I mean we're getting close to game number 100 it's still a long ways to go to look at it Cubs are right behind them and then the Mets are three and a half out of the wild card 3-1 pitch to Castro swinging Abyss cutter three and two or is that a two seamer two seamer yeah really had an action like a cutter though SEMA runs down the cutter runs left to right I guess is the better way of putting it [Applause] popped him up Howard over toward the tarp he's not going to have room [Applause] maybe before they added those seats he might have had room not a girl [Applause] good phone call [Applause] now to right field Dominic Brown floats back he's under it makes the catch two outs two outs here in the fifth inning time to check our our photo of the day with Murph Murph all right thanks Tom was promised earlier in the game we have selected the data strong fan photo of the game all you have to do is tweet your strongest fan photo to hashtag phillyphoto data strong fan and you just might see yourself an upcoming broadcast it's all brought to you by T-Mobile today's photo comes from PSU mom27 that's Mother's Day in the Hall of Fame club and she was looking for Mike Schmidt and she had to settle for the next best thing in the large Hall of Fame photo of one of our broadcast Partners Mike Schmidt so a great photo from PSU mom27 we'll continue to do this side it's all brought to you by T-Mobile so make sure you send in your photos out towards shallow Center odubo Herrera tracks it down so the no-hitter is intact for Cole Hamels he's gone five innings without allowing a base set he's walked just one batter will go to the sixth the Phillies on top three nothing foreign [Music] thank you [Music] foreign dependence Blue Cross Philly of the week is playing a big role for the Phillies in platoon and coming off the bench Franco's arm is as strong as ever helping the team defend from the outfields Off the Bench and pinch hitting Jeff has embraced the job and delivered again and again putting himself among the league leaders in pinches Frenchie walked on to the Phillies roster this winter and is walking off with good memories during the season and they're brought to you by Independence Blue Cross live Fearless well he was the hero again in yesterday's ball game Jeff Francoeur Pete mccadden said that uh he's gonna have to start thinking about putting him back in the lineup against right-handers from time to time we go to the top of the sixth inning Freddie Galvez leads it off it'll be the bottom third Galvez Brown and Hamels Galvez is open today against Arrieta and so in one pours the fastball in on the inside corner Philly scored three runs on a three-run home run by Ryan Howard [Applause] Jason Mott was coming running in charging trying to get that foul ball before the uh security officer picked it up Mr schrodes the bullpen coach so he wanted to throw it at oh Freddy thought he got a piece of that one six strikeouts for Arrieta I don't know if he's gonna get that ball back Matt to throw it at him [Applause] his Dominic crowd who singled his first his last time up he grounded out his first time he's one for two Owen two [Applause] Chopper foul toward Juan Samwell and the count one remains one and two I think Tom I think I have a pretty good idea how to make a uh something where you can make a lot of money off of oh good that's always good let's have a a attached to your left hip yeah or your right hip and every time it starts to leak it zaption like a stun gun would that be just for the normal normal population or you mean for a hitter for hitter one two pitch uh the swing of the Miss he went up and in and then got zapped while he did it seven strikeouts for arietta found the Phillies wherever you are with mlb.com at bat the number one app for live baseball that bat is up to the moment at any moment with in-game highlights live look-ins replay reviews radio broadcast stat cast and more get mlb.com at bat for your smartphone or tablet it's not a good idea I think it's a great idea just a reminder to keep your hip in there yeah what would you get if you didn't open your hip hop you'd get a good swing because your hip would stay in there your upper body your lower half would be good ammo swings and misses that one it's 0-1-1 and Hamill strikes out so arietta strikes out the side eight K's today for Jake Arrieta however the fills lead it three nothing as we go to the bottom of the sixth well Jake arrieta's day is done as the wind is flowing in here at Wrigley Field he'll watch as the Cubs will send up a pinch hitter Cole Hamels though has been fantastic this afternoon heck of a bounce back considering his last two starts well it is it's a great bounce back and it's a great uh day of controlling his changeup being able to get his fastball into 95-96 a lot of swinging misses today not a lot of foul balls only left five foul balls the whole game so today he had a very good game plan knowing that he wants to throw five speed pitches early and finish the hitters off with a good fastball for arietta he'll be uh he'll be lifted from this game with 94 pitches met and eight strikeouts he gave up the three-run home run to Ryan Howard that's pretty much it you take a look at the line for Cole and as we begin the bottom of the sixth inning Jonathan Herrera will lead it off as a pinch hitter he takes a fastball on the inside corner Owen one Herrera hitting 253 and as Travis Wood former starting pitcher for the Cubs warms up in the bullpen oh and two to Herrera his numbers is a pinch hitter the Cubs only have a four-man bench two catchers on their bed schwarber and Tea Garden they have Chris Coughlin Chicago actually has good numbers against Hamels I know it's Lefty on Lefty [Applause] a little high and it's two balls and two strikes [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] Phillies baseball is brought to you by Budweiser Budweiser still brewed the hard way this boat's for you it's two strikes and three and two [Applause] on Deck hitter is Addison Russell [Applause] three toward the second deck pinballing around [Applause] Hamilton's 71 pitches with nobody out here in the sixth inning the best he's looked in quite a while as he said it was just in a rut he may have gotten himself out of that rut bring it a Miss he got him got him strikeout number seven for Cole [Applause] [Music] got a little help there fastball from The Zone Ball Four you get in that area where you found some pictures off you're battling battling three balls two strikes you have tendency to open up your strikes on a little wider well now Russell who's grounded back to the mound a little Tapper just to the left of it his first time up takes upstairs 1-0 [Applause] you might hear the internal PA announcing the line on Jake Arrieta Stadium opened in 1914 I think they bought the internal PA in 1915. I mean that sounds old school doesn't it Matt [Applause] sounds like a horse racing going on it does sound like a horse race huh one ball one strike to Russell ball waved that one and two [Applause] [Applause] well that's where his fastball has sat a lot today 95 miles an hour with that one there [Applause] animals has his signs and he got him dug out by Ruiz strikeout number eight and they're two gone here in the sixth inning Dexter Fowler will be the batter nice easy delivery and gets on top of the change up it's a hitter you think okay I have to protect maybe fastball oh man change up nice pick by Ruiz yep every time the Phillies pitchers retire the opposition one two three Comcast will make a contribution to Philly's Charities Phillies baseball is brought to you by Xfinity official entertainment provider of the Philadelphia Phillies four times today [Applause] one ball no strikes to Fallon side 2-0 [Applause] walked [Applause] ball four so Fowler walks on four pitches so the two base runners today have been two walks to Dexter Fowler one in the first and one in the sixth inning 17 straight retired by hamills until that walk right there he's seen 14 pitches he's always swung once today [Applause] and one time he's flying near the ground ball or shortstops well now you have to be careful with Kris Bryant although you have a three-nothing lead Brian's evolving into one of the more dangerous hitters internationally but he will strike out a lot 114 times this year low and it's 1-0 Carlos is recognizing that it's time to go out and chatting with Cole [Applause] from the longest city that he's had so far 18 pitches so far this inning he had 15 in the first other than that a whole lot of heavy lifting for him Runner goes and have that base stolen Fowler slides in safely we've got a great job it's his 16th stolen base of the Season it wasn't there was a strike to Brian one ball one strike I mean a lot of scattering Parts you know that you can still call Hamels bottom minus so what you make your pitch out of the inning absolutely give a three-run lead go get the batter [Applause] the ball has bounced right past the backside of Anthony Rizzo it's one and two [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] got him struck him out with a 91 mile an hour cutter nine strikeouts for Hamels he strikes out three here in the sixth inning no runs no hits in fact he hasn't allowed a hit today and just one man left on base he's walked just two here are the strikeouts of the inning Herrera goes after a high fastball and then a great pick by Ruiz on Russell's at Baton finally he gets Brian to wrap up the bottom of the sixth time now for your Delaware Valley Honda dealers game summary the Phillies leaded three nothing thanks to a home run by Ryan Howard back in the third his 17th of the Year Cole Hamels though is quickly becoming the story line here today six no-hit Innings the only two base runners two walks to Dexter Fowler nine strikeouts through six innings for Cole and as we go to the top of the seven Travis Wood will take over for Jake arrietta who struck out eight over six innings for the Cubs there's Cole trying to keep cool in The Dugout really hard to keep cool in this dugout there is no air basically circulating through there except for there's a fan or something [Applause] I mean there's nothing Cesar Hernandez leaded off against Travis Wood one ball one strike to him [Applause] his numbers 27 games this year 10 home runs allowed he has started and relieved out toward left Center playable for dinorphia and one out Travis with the scatter report on him is he throws everything cut fastball curveball change slider knuckleball tops out at 91 miles an hour you know he ranges from 70 with his with his curveball to 91 with his fastball mentioned he was a starting pitcher at one point and now relegated to the bullpen he has traditionally given the Phil some trouble [Applause] oh dubo Herrera is the hitter he shows bunt takes High 1-0 's one for three is struck out he's doubled and scored he's also grounded out knows his double they got things rolling against arietta in the third because then they worked around Franco walked him and it opened up the door for Howard to hit the home run I want to sit foul toward us and on to the roof and it's gone forever [Applause] back to the screen one and two to Herrera [Applause] [Applause] no dubo fights it off to left to norfia into the shadows of light stanchions makes the catch for the second out so he's just honored a couple days ago two more extraordinary Scholars at Citizens Bank Park and if you want to nominate an extraordinary scholar they'll be accepted till the 3rd of August go to phillies.com scholar for more information two winners will be selected in August and September to wrap up the season you must have a 3.0 GPA or better to qualify they're also going to ask you to write an essay which I'm sure you can if you're an extraordinary scholar here's Michael Franco who has two doubles today and a walk takes on the uh off the outside corner 1-0 Cole Hamels doesn't seem to be bothered at all the fact that he hasn't allowed a hit because he's sitting there talking to Carlos Ruiz an entire half inning [Applause] the athletic trainers came over to make sure he was hydrated [Applause] two balls no strikes to Franco way inside 3-0 throw him a strike 3-0 green light oh man that's a swing right there dungeon 2030 3-1 swims are for the fans grip it and rip it 'll try to keep your balance [Applause] he'll walk for the second time so a two-out walk and Howard's coming up I asked Michael about that butt yesterday in that outstanding play with David Ross he goes oh was I surprised and I said yeah you look surprised he said all I was thinking was let me get there let me get there let me get there and I informed him that you know David Ross's 22 butt hits he goes well I won't be playing that far back easy but base is loaded two outs I said it almost worked he said it did almost work s outside want to know here's that play we're talking about David Ross the batter well he was so far back and not even a close play [Applause] in the air the right center field towering shot Fowler going back so is Solaire Fowler is on the track and he makes the catch and the side is retired no runs no hits one man left that guy right there is going to lead it off when we come back in the bottom of the seventh I know that Marlon Anderson predicted two home runs today for Ryan Howard I'm sure he jumped up from his seat on that last ball that he hit out toward the track in right center field Cole Hamels goes to work here in the bottom of the seventh inning he has gone into the seventh inning three different times in his career with a no-hitter so this will be number four you see what he done in his previous uh two starts six in the third combined 14 earned runs well Anthony Rizzo will lead things off here in the bottom of the seventh Rizzo takes on the inside corner it's 0-1 [Music] it's time Cole went into the seventh inning with a no-hitter was in June of 2010 against San Diego Adrian Gonzalez broke it up with two outs with a home run tries to get it inside again but it's a little too far and it's one ball and one strike pitch count is comfortable 87 right right now with two pitches thrown here in the seventh [Applause] and a foul ball one and two it's time now for our course like cold hard fact brought to you by Frost brewed Coors Light [Applause] Rizzo's Ops nowadays percentage and sluggy percentage combined 9-13 that's really good very good remember earlier in the day when I said the only thing you can do with that two steam inside is hit it a mile foul yeah we're headed off your foot he just did [Applause] side and it's 2-2 [Applause] down the left field line and that will be out of play 90th pitch thrown by hamills his longest no-hit bid was six and two thirds that was uh back uh in September of 2006 against the Astros of all teams Phillies always have trouble against the Astros Adam Everett broke it up with two outs in the seventh swinging to miss he got him he went fishing outside the strike zone 10 strikeouts for Cole Hamels well there's one out here in the seventh inning [Music] this is the pitch right here it's gonna surprise you that he's throwing you a changeup even battle with the fastball inside the fastball away a curveball earlier in his fourth a second I've met now all of a sudden he comes up the change up and it kind of surprises you because you don't expect to see a change up from a left-hander oh there's the distribution of bouts dominating with the 10 strikeouts Jorge Solaris The Hitter and he takes a curveball outside 1-0 [Applause] Hamels is now 30 strikeouts shy of second place all time in Philly's history that's spot held by Robin Roberts inside the soul there two balls one strike one out here in the bottom of the seventh inning [Applause] it's good location 94 miles an hour right at the knees [Applause] the lair's taking a stroll he doesn't think that was a strike 35 000 plus the Umpire in the stands don't agree either [Applause] 2-2 pitch down and Away Solaire has strikeout victim number 11. straight strikeouts for Hamels actually it's the walk but five straight As far as outs go does not like the bat doesn't like it It's gotta hurt hot day like this probably cramp up that hammy thus content attack they made all day three stray coats there's dinar FIA he's over two he's struck out in flight out takes a curve ball it's 0-1 that's a get me over curve and start him off [Applause] check swing did he go yes he did says Jerry Davis the body did more than the bat did [Applause] and now the O2 pitch zway and avenge up it's the longest call seven no hit Innings he's only allowed two base runners here this afternoon he's hanging on to a three-nothing lead and maybe a little history as we go to the eighth so far in 2015 there have been two no-hitters Chris Heston and Max Scherzer well Cole Hamels has seven no hit Innings here today and he's part of our Hyundai defensive plays of the game Matt well the rough all through with pitching now Rizzo Change-Up Dosa down next to their change up first gets up there gets another change up so three strikeouts went down three change UPS that's your defensive player brought to you by your local Hyundai dealership Carlos Ruiz greets Travis Wood or excuse me James Russell with the ball up the middle what a play by Addison Russell he stayed on the bag Rizzo did 4-3 on the putout what a way here at the top of the eighth inning well he just showed up the shorts showed off a shortstop's arm [Applause] that he did once again unfortunately it happens to a catcher [Applause] up down strong throw get stressed by Roosevelt first base [Applause] Cody Ashe takes High James Russell pitched in yesterday's ball game for the Cubs Ramirez is uh warming up for Chicago at the knees one ball one strike [Applause] Russell's numbers 0-2 a 2.35 earned run average can you believe that the story Tom the scouting report on James Russell is identical to Travis Wood [Music] fastball 91 Travis Wood 91. [Applause] this is Neil Ramirez in the bullpen I've always liked James Russell I thought he's been a pretty good left-handed pitcher Chuck swing by ashy three balls two strikes [Applause] off the end of the bat back toward the middle a base hit past Castro so what out single for Cody Ashe Freddie Galvez is coming up let's check in with Barefoot the major league no foot Murph all right thanks Tom brought to you by St Joseph's University and a rough season continues to disappoint in Boston as the Red Sox have announced they are placing Dustin Pedroia back on the disabled list second baseman suffered a right hamstring pull something he's been dealing with you'll remember he was on the DL earlier this season from late June into the All-Star break with that same hamstring injury he was also in the middle of a one for 22 stint since being back off the DL says it's bothering him they're putting him back on and hoping that the rest will get it right with them the news is better for the Atlanta Braves as they welcome back uh their power back Freddie Freeman off the disabled list he has been on there since the middle of June with that wrist injury but he had one rehab game he went two for four hit a home run they said hey good enough Freddie Freeman's coming back up to the Braves I would imagine we'll be back in the starting lineup tonight when they take on the St Louis Cardinals guys all right Murph we appreciate it I'm a little concerned you're a little red out there Murph are you really layering up are you just telling us no I think it's just a reflection off my red shirt to be honest with you oh really I'm okay I'm all right all right I've been hiding Freddie Galvis is the cat one ball no strikes with the runner at first base [Applause] to the right [Applause] ball and one strike [Applause] another foul ball to the right this one down to the first level one ball two strikes [Applause] [Applause] one of two as the runner leads off first little bloop out toward right field Solaire coming in and it's not going to be caught it's kicked around by Russell that allows ashy to go to Third and Galvez quickly to Second the throw gets away one run is in this may score two Galvez coming all the way home the throat of the plate not in time he scores standing and the Phillies lead is up to five it's a five-nothing ball game as the Cubs are throwing it all around the playing fields that should have to score that a double no RBI and an E3 it's uh well Texas Ledger Russell dives off his glove Rizzo thinks he has a chance to throw Galvez at a second base lo and behold no one stand up second base goes the bullpen he comes up he fires the second base somewhat through a cutter nobody there goes in the bullpen and allows Freddie gels to score from a false it well out toward right field toward the well Solaire is there and he makes the catch two outs and Cole Hamels will bat here in the top of the eighth inning [Applause] [Music] fastball and it's 0-1 [Applause] swinging to miss snowballs two strikes [Applause] and a lighter out toward left center field that's going to split the Gap and go all the way to the ivy Hamill's on his way to Second that's where he'll stop he'll have a two out double it's his first extra base hit of the year these are kind of opened things up here in the eighth inning a five-run lead [Applause] [Music] [Applause] here's Cesar Hernandez with the rudder at second base [Applause] that saves our lines went into left field that'll be a bait said Hamilton will stop at third and let's see if the Cubs make a change here you got odubel coming up so you want the Lefty to stay in but they're hitting them around here might be a little bit rattled by that play that little bloop by Freddie Galvis into right field [Applause] here's Ramirez the right-hander pull Hamels over Third Base Cesar Hernandez at first base Herrera is coming up [Applause] [Applause] thank you another game of double-digit hits for the Phillies [Applause] out toward left center field to Northfield On The Run he'll get to a spot makes the catch side is retired oh Dibble hits it hard two run score both runs are earned runs Phillies lead two Cole Hamels back to work in the bottom of the eighth inning small Matt Stairs and Greg Murphy I'm Tom McCarthy Cole Hamels taking his time after doubling his uh last time up at the plate he was part of the last no hitter it was the combined no-hitter on Labor Day last year in Atlanta he threw six Jake diekman threw one Ken Giles one Jonathan papelbond one this one's been a little more special though 12 strikeouts for Hamels here this afternoon he's walked two batters that's it he walked Fowler twice to start the game and then once in the sixth inning he's had all of his pitches but it's been his fastball and his change up that have been the best pitches here this afternoon well it has and has also getting me over curveball early in the count to get ahead and then all of a sudden makes his change up in this fastball even better Star when Castro leads it off now he did run the bases uh after the double and his last at bat I don't know how much of a burden that was for him after throwing 99 pitches before the start of the eighth inning curveball at its 1-1 Castro is over two he's grounded to third he's also fly to right at a play one ball two strikes any questions about Cole Hamels I think a bit answered here today talked about his last two starts 14 earned runs six in the third Innings of work now that's not an issue anymore at least not today what two pitch fouled back again just above the screen in the Press Box [Applause] Fly ball right field Dominic Brown's been a little busy recently comes running in to make the catch Castro's retired one away yeah David Ross will be the batter now again you got to keep in mind that Ross has 22 Bud hits during his career and Franco knows that now so Franco's still going to play back behind the bag I know it's a No-No map [Music] but he still has to be aware of it it's a double no no Ross has struck out he's also fly to Center [Applause] breaking ball inside Kyle schwarber has come out of the on Deck Circle for the Cubs pitcher's spot is up after Ross [Applause] this was not in agreement with Phil Cousy the home plate umpire [Applause] Tom is another supposed to meet at the batter's box somebody's got to get him back in there one and two you didn't like the first one I'm going to throw a second one good pitches both of them you know instead of the cutter today that has been one of his better pitches the curveball it does in the air to left center field that ball is drilled Herrera On The Run toward the ivy makes the catch and then splash down kicks up a bunch of dust two outs here in the eighth inning all right well dubo red a long way this ball looked good off the bat yeah and it looked even better because he was playing the opposite field makes a nice play and just eats the Dust it's like Pig so here's schwarber to pinch it Hamill's at 108 pitches we've said it's a short bench for the Cubs so now they're down to two bench players they play schwarber to pull takes a strike it's 0-1 that was the cutter or a cutter from Hamels 86 miles an hour as fastballs topped off at 96 today it sat consistently around 95. Owen two he has 12 strikeouts his career high in strikeouts is 15. he did that back on April 21st 2007. [Applause] Hamels is ready so shoreburne outside try to creep a little bit more and it's one and two you can sense that the fans are getting into this more and more with each passing pitch [Applause] good 50 years since the Cubs have been no hit toward the middle flag down by Hamels he'll flip to First and the no-hitter is intact eight no hit hittings for Cole Hamels this afternoon Philly fans are coming to their feet they're sensing something he's three outs away from finishing off a no-hitter this afternoon at Wrigley Field it's five nothing Phillies yes the strikeout's been a big deal but Cole hemel's defense on that final play was as well quick reactions by Cole Hamels to flag down that ground ball to finish up the bottom of the eighth inning so now he'll sit and wait and watch his offense go to work at the top of the ninth he's allowed two base shredders today just two walks to Dexter Fowler and that's it so now as we go to the top of the ninth inning if you look at his line 12 strikeouts no hits eight Innings and here's that last out all those ground balls you're taking spring training the pfp the pitcher's field in practice pays off in that situation right there one throwing a strike but two getting in a good Fielding position to be able to make him play it back up the middle Kyle schwarber will come on to catch after pinch hitting for the Cubs and Neil Ramirez will be the new pitcher Ramirez will face Mike calfranco and as we go to the top of the ninth inning five nothing Phillies on top they scored three on a three-run home run by Ryan Howard and they scored two on a throwing error by Anthony Rizzo Franco has a couple doubles today first pitch is over it's oh and one Neil Ramirez three pitch pitcher fastball slider and a cut fastball to right-handers look away that one's in there it's one and two it'll be Franco Howard and Ruiz three four and five for the Phillies they're in the top of the ninth inning though he's Advantage 10 hits here this afternoon he would have backed the pitching of Cole Hamels off the hands a pop-up on the right side Rizzo is there and he'll make the call and the catch one away and here's Ryan Howard Howard has a three-run home run today he went out toward the track his last time up the move Chris Bryant over to the right side Bryant will go into shovel right field as an extra defender on the pull side [Applause] they don't change the defense alignment that they play it normal we've seen teams where the third baseman will go way back in the grass these guys they don't play very deep in right field no that's probably the shallowest that we've seen he's usually back in this area here then again if you're back that far you're right on top of the right fielder so [Applause] all right fastball 0-2 [Applause] [Applause] well here's our WB basic delivery of the game this is all Cole Hamilton is needed here this afternoon so far comes back in the third inning gets a curveball down the zone hits it just for enough from left summer for a big three-run home run Mason's delivery of the game one ball two strikes to Howard with one out here in the top of the ninth and a breaking ball just misses inside [Applause] Howard hits one out toward right center field Solaire going back on it toward the track and it is a one hop over the screen over the basket I should say and into the seats so a ground rule double 19th double of the year for Howard so he's in scoring position [Applause] and Carlos Ruiz is coming up Ryan has swung the Bell well today oh yeah hitting the home run to left Center this is a bad driving the Deep to Right Center and yesterday I know you don't live in the past but yesterday he would have three home runs because the wind's blowing out today that's cutting the win to Right Center his last it Matty flew up it's almost the same spot fans are getting on the fan who got the ball in the ground will double for some reason they wanted to throw it back it's not a home run shouldn't throw it back Carlos is up Carlos takes inside one ball and no strikes welcome to Wrigley yeah [Applause] [Applause] grab all over the third and Brian has it looks Howard back to second two outs and Cody as she's coming up [Music] [Applause] [Applause] Runner leads off second base with two outs breaking ball waved at 0-1 [Applause] Ashley in this game is one for four Singleton scored in the eighth inning is also lined out to First that was probably the sharpest ball that he's hit here today [Applause] no balls one strike inside and low one ball one strike now I see why they're raised for so many years we're leading the league and shifts on the Outfield yeah now it's the Pirates who lead the league and ships but you're right ground ball into that shift Russell to his right a few steps throws out ashy in the side is retired no runs one hit and one man left swell the fills put three up in the third two in the eighth inning the Cubs have nothing no runs no hits and only two base runners this afternoon Cole Hamels will go to work in the ninth inning looking for the 13th no-hitter in Philadelphia Phillies franchise history of course his first the longest he had gone without allowing a hit was six and two thirds before today he's been relaxed this afternoon his mechanics have been outstanding his fastball has had life to it it's topped out at 96 miles an hour and he has struck out 12. and the Phillies fans who have come out to Chicago to see a very special place Wrigley Field or hoping they see something very special here this afternoon the most games without being no hit the Cubs are at 7920. it's been 50 years since Sandy Koufax no hit the Chicago Cubs that was the last time they've been no hit no the all-time no-hitters for the Phillies we mentioned there have been 12 including the combined no-hitter in 2014. Roy Halliday had two in 2010. of course the perfect game against the Florida Marlins and then the no-hitter in the National League Division Series this is what Cole has done here this afternoon the 12 strikeouts have been electric here this afternoon they have they've all got into different styles it's a good fastball 95. good curveballs very good change up still in position bearing isolated really being under in hot conditions being very cool all day you know not putting too much pressure on himself his energy today was all about pitching he was on the mound doing extremely well throwing strikes and mixed an unbelievable changeups after change up either the first pitch or the third pitch did not matter and then Herrera may be a nice play in left field [Applause] and then how was the little pfp pitcher's good in practice well changes for the fills as we go to the bottom of the ninth inning Ben Revere will take over in left field it'll be Addison Russell Russell Dexter Fowler and Chris Bryan for the Cubs here in the bottom of the ninth inning Cole Hamel started the game the Phillies combined for the no-hitter on Labor Day last year he went six Innings and the first pitch to Russell change up waved at Owen one 111 pitches to start the inning for Cole he's at 112 right now Russell is over two he's grounded back to the mound he's also struck out curveball High one ball one strike [Applause] tried another curveball a check swing they won't appeal and it's two balls in one strike to Russell [Applause] three and one Hamels wanted the extra day because he wanted the extra Bullpen to work out some mechanical issues it certainly has paid off here this afternoon [Applause] foul back it's three and two nowhere near the number of foul balls he's used to nowhere near the number of three ball counts he's been accustomed to in the last several starts but he's got a three ball two strike count here ground ball left side Franco will cut it off hurries the throw in time one outs a little nervous energy for some of the Phillies fans still in the dripping Sunshine over the first base dugout Hamels during his career is pitched in some Big Time moments World Series MVP had a stellar 2008 postseason you would think that something like this does not rattle somebody like Cole Hamels here's Dexter Fowler Fowler cuts on the first one it's 0-1 that's Owen Fowler's second swing of the day yep he's walked twice he's grounded out once [Applause] Owen two fastball still at 94. it still has electric life to it [Applause] well he's reached a new season high in pitches now with 121 as the count goes to one and two but at this point on a warm afternoon toward the end of July his arm is as loose as it can be [Applause] binder you got speed in Fowler too and the infielders know that and they can't sit back on everything [Applause] the one-two pitch and a call strike three right down the Chute Fowler goes down looking two outs here in the ninth inning strikeout number 13 for Hamels nothing really sure what Fowler's arguing about this is probably the best pitch he has seen all day it's a fastball right down the middle right there one out away from a no-hitter [Applause] [Music] there have been two no-no's this year Chris Heston of the Giants against the Mets Max Scherzer of the Nationals against the Pirates Chris Bryant's the batteries all for three in the first pitch grounded foul it's all in one 41 687. on their feet here at Wrigley Field a third in sunshine the rest in the shadows and the 0-1 pitch the pie one ball one strike 113 career wins for Cole Hamels a handful of postseason wins but he's one out away from his first ever no-hitter curveball waved at one and two 5 43 central time on Saturday July 25th Hamill's in the wine the 1-2 pitch curveball outside it's 2-2 takes a little walk behind the mound takes a little breather he's got his signs Brian is ready and now the 2-2 pitch in the dirt three and two the man Jimmy Rollins named Hollywood is trying to ride a beautiful script here this afternoon the 3-2 pitch to Chris Bryant in the air to center field Herrera going back toward the wall does he have it he reaches down did he make the catch he made the catch 13th no hitter and Philadelphia stream has a little bit of drama right at the end Cole Hamels he is back and his teammates are mobbing him right around the pitcher's Mounds unbelievable a remarkable afternoon a remarkable finish unbelievable feat by Carl hamills a 129 pitches this afternoon odumo Herrera I don't know if they want to kick him or hug him what a day here at Wrigley Field a building that's a little more than a hundred years old the Cubs have not been no hit in 50 years but this afternoon Cole Hamels the Lefty from Southern California as cool as a cucumber on a 94 degree day pitches the 13th no-hitter in Philadelphia Phillies history what a game Here's the final out Chris Bryan really put a charge into this one he did when it came off the bat very hot I thought man this is gonna go off the ball Herrera gets back overrides it totally football catch he had it all the way at least that's how he felt and a smile from Cole Hamels it wasn't the first of the day but it was probably the most relaxed of the day you don't think his teammates are the Phillies fans were into this moment there you go look at the reaction from the coaches that's awesome well Cole Hamels watching the entire time after a few seconds you know he wanted to shake his head Nicole Hamels down to the field with Greg Murphy after being mobbed by his teammates what a day for the left-hander win number 114 is pretty darn special very special indeed here with Cole Hamels first of all congratulations uh what a way to end it uh what was going through your mind when he was going back on that oh that feels better though that feels good no I'm you know I hung that and uh you know those types of pitches go out of the yard and especially with you know Brian his power I just unfortunately uh the wind is was my favorite today and you know Herrera made two phenomenal catches out there to definitely uh you know pick me up and uh you know just exciting just to pick the team up and and you know we're just playing really well and it's been fun to really see just everybody's participating and uh I guess it's nice to finally participate myself well it certainly is nice to watch and you know you flirted with no hitters before and you've been a part of a combined no-hitter before obviously your first uh all by yourself how is this different how does this feel emotionally what's going through your head uh it's you know just being able to Pound The Zone I think that was kind of something that I really wanted to do today was you know I had a few things I was working on uh you know for the past couple days and it was really it's just trying to be aggressive in the zone um you know and I don't think I was doing that too well the past couple games so you know when you do when you're doing that you're able to get ahead and you know you make them swing at bad pitches uh and you know and then you're able to kind of capitalize when they do that you described yourself over the last couple weeks in a rut uh so you were out of that rut was it mechanical that you change anything that you changed or just what you said pounding the zone no you know you know when when things aren't uh working well mechanically uh you know you're trying to uh you're trying to find the zone and and once you're able to finally find that click uh you know then everything just falls into place and I think that's kind of what happens is you have to be able to establish it with the work that you have for the past couple days and especially in the bullpen uh and then once you're able to feel comfortable that then it just goes and you just go out there and let it happen and that's kind of what uh I've always been able to do unfortunately I just wasn't able to do it for uh you know the last couple games you have shared a lot of things with Carlos Ruiz over the years including a World Series Championship but uh pretty pretty special to have him part of this as well oh always you know he's he and I have always been on the same page and uh you know we've been been able to build something really special with just knowing uh you know how to pitch guys before he even needs to put down the signs and I think that's something that you know really shows uh you know the work that he's done and the confidence that I have in him and you know this is something special I know we've been to the postseason and done that but you know this is always something special and we're always trying to do something a little bit more I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't ask if you gave any thought to the idea that this might be your last start in a Phillies uniform no you know it's it's something where uh I just have to go out there and I'm trying to enjoy the moment of uh you know being being able to be out here and uh you know being able to pitch and you know what I like to do most is to be successful at it so you know that's that's kind of my focus you know is to be able to enjoy what I'm able to do not a lot of people get to be in this situation and I think that's kind of sometimes you take it for granted so you know just being able to come out here enjoy the moment and obviously this happened well no matter what happens in the future I made a little history today congratulations skull on the no hitter it was fun to watch thank you all right guys let's head it back upstairs Murph outstanding interview I mean outstanding interview great questions great answers from Paul hamills that was As Good As It Gets
