with my partner Chris Singleton I'm John shy and it's going to be a hot one out there singy temperatures in the 90s right now around first pitch yeah boo some players love this heat they feel like there's no fear attacking the baseball don't have to worry about cold days and getting jammed but I tell you what for me was always about hydration because I could cramp up and you have to make sure that you stay up on your fluids and it's not just when the game starts this is something that you have to do days in advance if you're someone that's prone to crampy all right we'll be back to get this one started after this just about ready to go and on the mound now Charlie Morton Chris it's a little more common these days but still he's a strikeout per inning type of guy well I hear you about the strikeouts a lot more guys striking out today but when you consider having the ability to get that strike out particularly when you need it a Man On Third less than two outs situations where yeah maybe you're not a real high strikeout guy but just knowing you have the swing and Miss stuff in a big spot I think it's real critical and he's got it Alex call stands in now and watches strike one next offering upstairs one one St this one popped up marafield moving under it and there's one down as we take a look at the Nationals lineup this an offense Chris that's having a hard time scoring runs right now yeah sometimes things just aren't going to click and unfortunately what happens is players press they try to do a little bit more and they get out of their game you've got to let the game come to you if you chase it it's going to run from you so this is a team that just needs a calm down relax and understand that they're going to come out of this CJ Abrams in the Box here lets that one go for a ball the one the short stop takes a [Applause] ball that one finds the zone strike one kicks and fires three balls one [Music] strike and it's filled up [Applause] foul ball left side he'll see another one out base is empty he goes down looking up now for Washington James Wood down the line and that drops foul 01 now just missed just missed with that back door breaking ball if he gets a swing and miss or called strike 02 count instead it's 1-1 look for him to go back to that pitch later in this atat [Applause] two outs out there to Center Parris has a beat on it brings it in and that'll do it we'll go to the bottom of the first 0 and we're back and today's starter Patrick Corbin what do we have on him well he's been a very dependable starter for his club and what stands out for me is that left-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 against him and it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball maybe it's the release point maybe it's the motion but just some way somehow they've got to figure out a way to pick it up and try to have some success from the left side [Applause] swing and a miss and he was fooled the pitch started in and ended up on the outside edge just changing planes and very difficult especially for a left-handed hitter to [Music] track and he juk wouldn't chase that time and up and in and the count is two and two well he's so great about hitting the ball the other way he gets those arms extended so right there just trying to straighten him up a little bit so he doesn't have as much outside PL coverage the two- two spoils the two- strike pitch and he'll see another leftand hitter Waits swing and a miss and he's down on strikes he didn't make it easy for him on the mound but they still get the strike out well there's a small side of relief right there I mean just to keep that speed off the base pass it's not just the pitcher it's other guys that have to think about it from your infielders have to think about that Runner potentially stealing but also be in position to make a play as an outfielder you're thinking about a base hit to the Outfield I got to get to it quickly to try to keep this guy from taking an extra base so I think everyone just a little more relaxed that he didn't reach base Whit marfield up to the plate and the slider just misses and another [Applause] ball that one misses ball three and there's the automatic one 3-1 and he couldn't come up with it well he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot hitter didn't offer at it now he has somebody to worry about over it first so man aboard here's Marcelo Zuna first pitch doesn't find the zone marfield at first one gone and pitch in for a strike and the count even at one good approach right there you want to get something just a little higher that you can Elevate stay out of that double play Fair ball lead Runner touches second headed for third the throw in and the throws off line safe at third solid swing from start to end on time with everything really good balance nice extension and he made it out front for the line drive knock so one out with two a board and here's the first baseman Matt Olen base hit and Del Score first it's one ZIP fires to third not in time he's safe as they jump ahead a run scores went up there looking to be aggressive and got something he could handle you'll often hear the phrase short to it long through it and that's a great example of it right there got the Barrel in The Hitting Zone early squared it up with the well time swing and came away with a beautiful line drive into center field two on one out here's Ramone laurano seems like he's making contact with everything lately batting over 300 so far this month that one close rule the ball and that is ball one Lefty out of the stretch Runners at first and third on the ground to the left that's a base hit run scores comes through with the RBI he kind of rolled over on this pitch a little bit but he got enough behind it to shoot it through for a knock and you'll take that anytime you can get him to find a hole Adam Duval at the plate and that's in there at the knees Runners at first and second with one [Applause] gone inside corner and that's called a strike well lots of pitches thrown in this first inning it's kind of that nightmare scenario for starting pitching but you know what it's still early enough he can settle in he can get some length if he just cleans up his mechanics a little bit the pitch gets a piece and it stays 0 and two two on one out in the air right name or just a nickname yeah no clue and that's off the Inside Edge ball two anyways Rusty's got a good Zone very good on the corners of the plate but he'll give pitchers a little bit above the letters and below the knees if they're earning it the Braves up by two here at the top of the second to third Ella whips it across two up two down in the top of the second batting the third number two dirt another one two swings and misses struck him out Nationals go quietly they Trail things here to nothing and welcome back to the ballpark bottom half of inning number two and now Shawn Murphy this is a guy who is very highly regarded defensively fun to watch him control stuff behind the plate Good Game caller good at framing but it's that big arm that really stands out and there's a rocket into the Outfield and that rolls into the corner now he turns and heads for second now the tag at second and he's out trying for two got a love the hustle and the attitude there to try to stretch that single into a double but unfortunately thrown out at second base he was so close to being in scoring position Gio ell in the box now no balls in a strike [Applause] lined in the left Center base hit and now the lineup turns over with one away the B the center field so the lineup flips over Michael Harris digs in now he's over for one we talk about guys with good speed and definitely he has it but pushing the offense aside for just a second Chris it's the defensive side that I think the speed factors in the most that one missed well he gets the balls that get by most people at that position just really impressive because there are certain times the ball comes off the bat automatically that team that hit it thinks that they've got a base hit or they may have extra bases and he just takes it away and here it comes swing in a miss and he was full and two that's way outside and it's two and two Ella the base runner at first with one out cut on and Miss struck him out and now two gone thought it was a pretty good pitch top of the strike zone we're seeing more fast balls in that location hitters especially with two strikes have to be ready to pull the trigger Whit merfield the next to hit the walk and a run scored his first time that's outside and that's ball one and a pitch hot shot to third they get the force gets him easily ends the inning so it's no runs on two hits no errors and one left on base we head on now to the top of the third it's the Braves two and the Nationals nothing top half of the third inning and now it's Juan YZ YZ Morton back to work hit on the ground to the right side and it goes just foul the pitch outside low ball one wouldn't chase that time back toback breaking pitches away you get the feeling as a hitter that the pitcher is afraid of you that he doesn't want to challenge you so I think the confidence level is raised right here next offering is in for a strike and that one in the air center field Harris racing after it pulls it in on the run and there's one [Applause] away Joey Gallow steps to the plate there's a strike nowadays with Advanced metrics and increased use of moving the infielders around defense isn't necessarily about making errors are you able to get to the ball are you able to position fielders where hitters hit the ball but within the new shift rules oh and ball one in an area that goes unnoticed is the coach that's responsible for positioning and then uh the research person that's providing the information so what we're seeing in baseball so many more people behind the scenes that are contributing to the success between the lines that one misses in the dirt back when you played it wasn't the empirical data we have now it was a guy with a ruler and a diamond taking a colored pencil and drawing a line where he thought someone had hit the ball right that or just going off of gut or feeli what does it look like is swing is today what's the pitcher throwing they are sticking to the metrics and what seems to be most consistent for that hitter regardless of who the pitcher is on the mound number 30 now at the plate as he swings through strike one the Nets down by a pair we're here in the top half of inning number three next offering in there for a strike that strike two well that's that slurve right there threw it extremely well and talk about just a ton of breaks so tough to get that Barrel [Music] to swing and a ground ball out to short boots it and he's going to make it to First and we'll see how they score it looked to me like he kind of let the ball play him instead of playing the ball and it just ate him off the hands get stiff and even the best infielders make kinds of mistakes you just have to learn from it and move on so the batting order turns over Alex call digging in for the Nationals he popped out his first time that one's in there and that is strike one this might be a steel situation but that's not your average catcher behind the dish you have to be careful here [Applause] and now the 01 and that one is inside ball one run around the move that's in for a strike throw is low and he can't pick it two outs is a great time to try to steal second especially when you have a guy with some Wheels On First Defense probably knew it was coming but figured we better focus on trying to get this hitter [Applause] out two outs and one and scoring position and down on strikes and that is that so no runs on no hits one error and a runner left we head now to the home half of inning number three it's the Braves two and the Nationals nothing back here at Atlanta as we go to the last of the third at the batter Mar El Ozuna and a pitch he swings and fouls one off kicks and Deals and it's quickly nothing and two on the designated hitter and a foul ball he stays alive the wind of the pit that one misses now one and two in the air left field wood on his way in makes a nice grab at a full Sprint one away just pulled off of it a little bit right there that front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed if he does that he's going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some Authority instead of a fly out to left Olen in the box with one away as [Applause] through go Chris through the early stages he hasn't been very efficient in terms of the pitch count he's going to need to get some quick outs if he's going to get deeper into this game and that one is lifted in the air and that is that as we go to the top of the fourth and now up for Washington CJ Abrams ab and the rander back to work the short stop takes the ball well these NS as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the plate so many of their outs have come from weak contact on pitches they're chasing outside of the strik you can't do much of anything with those locations and that's been true again today next pitch is outside and as a pitcher when the hitters are swinging at everything you feel no need to challenge inside the zone you just keep working the corners and expanding that Strike Zone and Beyond and they just keep eating right out of your hand fouls one off two and two left and batter weights that one down the line and foul ball well he gave up on that pitch early and it ended up staying in the zone I'm sure he's kicking himself and would like that pitch again and there's a ball expect for that guy to come right at you with a fast ball something in the zone because he does not want to allow the lead off wall that one the other away makes the grab one away it's never fun going back to the Dugout after hitting the line drive that finds a glove but you will get some high fives you know when you make great contact you feel like you've done everything right but in this game of baseball not everything is in your control wood stands in here leaves that one off the inside bases empty one away top half of inning number four that's in there and the count one and one right through there for a [Applause] strike swings through that one it's a strike out now batting and now it's kebert Ruiz he's over one [Applause] right through there for a [Applause] strike little bit [Applause] [Music] low here's a one-1 that misses off the outside edge two and one there's a strike man this guy's got a great feel for his breaking ball today swing and a miss struck him out and a nice inning of work there as he sets him down one two three nothing doing for Washington they Trail it here two nothing and we're back here's the left fielder Adam Duval leel Adam Ball the line in the pitch there's a strike you know these Braves showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one they're doing a good job of working the pitch count and they've been able to push a couple of runs across to score as well call calls it in and there's one away still relatively early but with the pair of runs already on the board the ripple effect of that high pitch count might set him up to do more damage later in this game Aria here's Orlando Aria grounded out his first time ball one there next offering in there for a strike and one and one and another ball next offering misses down and away one down base is empty that's towards Center as this one sized up pulls it down and he makes the catch and there's two now the B the catcher two outs bace is empty so now to the plate for Atlanta Shawn Murphy he's build his reputation as one of the top framers in the sport that one's in there that's strike one noall two down nobody on we're here in the bottom of the fourth ripped to third but handled and that will end the inning make a great catch like that it's all about timing the jump his timing was perfect excellent grab and he comes down with it the inning is over and welcome back to for the right pitch to come their way and I'm seeing very patient bats out of them starter leash has to be getting tighter with his pitch count where it is but so far he's been really effective in this one ball on to strike that clicks the corner you know sometimes it just takes getting to the ball pain in order to be able to score runs and that might be the case [Applause] today the pitch ah that hit him and the lead off man is aboard to start the inning boo you have any memorable hit by pitches yourself maybe high school college no but I almost did get decapitated by a foul ball at old Tiger Stadium tenna batting for the second time and that's strike one well he's really working him away this bat sometimes take a little bit off velocity try to get a roll over something on the ground stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield righty to the plate the Nationals hitless so far in the game the next pitch misses and that's ball three now a highfly ball out to left Center sizes this one up drops into the glove and there's one down now B the Des Juan YZ here's Juan YZ 0 for one with a fly out to Center yeah goes 6' one 26 years old and he's usually a first baseman but today he's the designated hitter next pitches outside some people say that first basem kind of have the day off regularly because they don't run around a whole lot but when you think about it they are involved in just about every single play and there's a lot of stress that gets put on their legs so a welld deserved day at the DH spot for him Garcia over at first with one away and another ball and ball four to a board he's making things difficult for himself right now out there on the mound but you know his confidence should still be high enough to get out of this but he's going to have to buckle down right here so first and second with one man gone here's Joey Gallow 0 for one he struck out swinging last time there's the swing in a Miss at the dish looking to lift the ball in the air in this spot anything but the inning ending double play boo that misses the zone and a count even one and one one out Runners at first and second that missed by a lot two and one it's a big opportunity right here but I love the way he's slowing the game down he's shrinking his Zone making sure he gets the pitch that he wants to hit swinging a foul over the screen and back at of play that's down and in going to lay off that pitch down number 30 up next for Washington tying run is at first and we're at the top of the fifth and that'll load the bases a great back and forth and that it bad he had to lay off some really close pitches and somehow Boogie found a way to keep the bat on his shoulder right there I'll tell you right now I couldn't have done it number 30 in the box now take strike one tough situation right here so important as a pitcher to get ahead in the count as he did right there flips to Second Double Play What a TN killing to end the inning just trying to sneak one through with the bases loaded but an excellent job by the defense to turn that one and get out of this [Applause] Jam ready to go for the last half of the inning now in for the Braves Gio Ella and a pitch wouldn't chase that time you know these Braves doing a good job of Simply getting the bat on the ball in this game and the numbers back that up the numbers tell us they're averaging more than a hit every inning and they've only struck out twice so they keep finding ways to put their bat on the ball got the back going too soon at strike two that's to third tenna throws across the diamond and the lead off man set down in their half of the fifth that's what a sinker designed to do get a guy to roll over a little bit hit the ball on the ground kill some worms while you're at it guy who's in the line of first and foremost because of what he contributes defensively Chris and when you talk about preventing runs from being scored this guy is a big contributor the 10 I was always told it's hard to take you off the field when you play really good defense especially at a premier position and that's what he does and another ball the hitting is going to come around he's going to figure it out but right now his big asset is the way he plays the game on defense next offering is in for a strike that one misses so a lead off walk it feels to me like his time on the mound is running short starting to show some signs of fatigue so we'll see how much longer they let him go here's CJ Abrams to hit oh he doesn't get the call one and0 now this guys definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here try to close that Gap but you know at the very least if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first it feels like it's really important of getting back into this ball game the pitch that one misses now two balls in a strike that one is absolutely belted and it one hops the wall coming home he scores it's 2-1 and just like that the no hitter is over that pitch came off the bat really well in the center field and he clearly put a nice swing on it and anytime you can get one to drop in out there you know you stung it pretty good because it seems like center fielders these days to a man these guys can run down just about everything hit their way throw to Second save and now it's going to be James Wood there's a strike no ball one strike with the he missed a hitable off speed pitch right there not sure exactly with the timing sometimes you get a backup breaking ball you're expecting it to make its move at the end it never does and you're tied up bomber deals one and two swing and a base hit a leadoff single and the go-ahead run is aboard pretty much a model swing on that one as he ripped it into the opposite field Gap and I'm sure he's going to be watching that one back on video because that's the kind of Swing you want to bottle so many positives that led to that knock Juan YZ will hit next [Applause] that's a strike if you're a base runner you got to stay dialed in here look for anything in the dirt try your best to get in scoring position the goahead run a board at first nobody out and that's in the dirt and that's ball one and there's a ball the pitch swings through that with two strikes may see some movement over there at first base trying to stay out of the double play right [Applause] here hardliner no trouble here puts it away for the ey and there's one [Applause] down and now it's Joey Galla you know this is kind of a tough matchup as a left-handed hitter facing a left-handed pitcher what you tell yourself is hitter's got holes in his swing because he's got so much power pitcher still can get a little too tight afraid to make a mistake number 30 in the on Deck Circle for the Nets let's see if he gives him anything to hit here and a breaking ball drops in for a strike on the ground could be two it's in and out of his glove but plenty of time to recover and that's the second out that's a good piece of hitting right there the job was to move the runner up and give your team a chance to score the go-ahead Run that's exactly what happened so you better believe your teammates are happy with you after that advat number 30 in the box now takes strike one oh he's really working that inside corner with the cutter I tell you what I hated that pitch so tough to get the barrel to and to keep it fair strike on the inside corner and a bat like this is almost over as it begins in this situation you have no idea what the next pitch is going to be you just got to hope that you can make contact that misses going to count one and two that's a really good take and another ball two and two inside just missed really good take especially with two strikes Alex call in the on Deck Circle two down there just kept it simple played Pepper with the middle of the infield and took it back where it came from and there was just no one there to knock it down here's Shawn Murphy Outfield playing very deep not wanting anything over their heads Swang in a miss one one no ball one strike trying to keep this a two two game here the bottom of the seven swinging a miss o and two wow good luck catching up to that one at the belt and fires cuts and misses it's a strike out he had him out in front which isn't easy to do against a hitter like this known for using the entire field just couldn't sit back long enough on that one giorella to the plate bounced up the middle into the Outfield Bas hit and that moves the goahead run to scoring position with two gone didn't take long to get a result for that at bat really nice job staying up the Middle with his approach he didn't try to do too much with the pitch just shot it through the infield now a good opportunity to potentially Jump Ahead in this game here in the later Innings back to the top of the lineup so now to the plate for Atlanta Michael Harris and the first pitch misses for ball one [Applause] swung on belted that one back hulls it in on the warning track no runs on two hits no errors and two men left stranded we look ahead to inning number eight we are tied 22 welcome back and a new arm of the mound to start Ronaldo Lopez well you see the ra very solid and that doesn't always tell you the whole story but he's been really good so far this year Alex call now at the plate Fielder Alex PA and a pitch and ball one to the right fielder and strike two well that's really the money spot down and away if you can locate that consistently it's going to be real tall for hitters to square that up that's what you love to see relievers do coming out of that bullpen swings and misses St him out blew the express right by his back for strike three we saw a solid effort out of their starter and the bullpen is following suit controversial with the call I think he got a little bit of favor on the mound no question about it it's not exactly what you want to see in a big spot like that and I'm sure there's some chirping going on from The Dugout making it clear that wasn't his best call behind the play today and the batter now James Wood missed inside with the Curve Lopez 30 years old now he joined the team as a free agent two outs there's a strike 95 of that one [Applause] and a swinging a Miss there one [Applause] two now one miss well he might have to look for a different putaway pitch right here two two he's already seen the curveball couple of times in this at bat so might have it timed up and ready for it righty delivers that one misses counts full three and two Hebert Ruiz to bat next two down dolman on line dry base hit up next to thetion go ahead run on base here's the catcher Hebert Ruiz 0 for three with two ground outs and a strike out that's in there it's 0 and one two gone the possible go-ahead run at first Lopez checks the runner and he Dives back in safely and here it comes foul ball still o and two you can see he was trying to stay back long enough to handle the off speed pitch but just a little Tardy on the fast ball this one in the air under it and and that's the third [Applause] out Nationals leave one and this game is still tied at 2 and two back now new pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eight Robert Garcia well he's been a really tough guy to take deep this season you usually have to string some hits together in order to get to him at the play with marfield marfield here comes a pitch ball one there you don't want to get beat by a fast ball in and he spits on that [Applause] one outside now two and0 kicks andand Marcelo Zuna up next and the pitch fou off down the right [Applause] side the pitch and now the count filled up three and two and boy that was the pitch 3-1 you want to be really aggressive on the fast good plate appearance there able to take the walk second walk of the game for him and he's been really patient at the play game plan that he's sticking to is's just not going outside of what he's looking for up there no outs runner at first Marcelo Zuna next up for the Braves marfield Dives back in fouled off he was late with the go-ahead run at first here the bottom half of the eighth inning up in in one and one activity in the Washington Bullpen DJ herds looks to be getting ready for Dave Martinez ferir also throwing kicks and fires and that's in for a strike that ball is foul and the pressure is building nobody out runner at first breaking ball and that got him he had two strikes on him and he hit him now the pressure is already high and now it's been cranked up to another level man his head must be spinning out there on the mound he's got to find a way to slow things down that breathing technique [Applause] boo let every out Olen swings through it for strike one good pitch right there anytime you can get one by a bat of this caliber especially with Runners on it's got to give you some confidence out there on the mound that you can win this battle swing and a miss and it's own and two well if he's going to do something special right here it's going to have to happen with two strikes battling here as he fouls it away marfield on second Williams on at first with nobody out got him swinging and that is a the pitcher and the hitter you can learn a lot about a guy by how he handles these pressure situations [Applause] and a base hit on the line throw comes in quickly holds that goahead run at third and there're still one away just a clutch at bat right there big time swing when this team really needed it really good swing right there he got a pitch that he knew he could handle allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws now that sets up a huge atat in this ball game Adam Duvall next up for the Braves that one finds the Zone strike one B is loaded one [Applause] away swing and a highfly ball to left squeezes it Runner tags for home L the pl sa and they take the lead well that can be a tough one with the bases loaded you can try to do too much but there he didn't he stayed within himself he got that run in with the sack fly would have been nice if the runners behind could have advanced but they'll take what they got on the ground to First Gallow steps on the bag that ends the inning and they limit the damage two men left stranded but they do push across one ninth inning coming up it's the Braves three and the Nationals two welcome back and here comes the closer Rael elus he's been so good against lefties Luis Garcia digging in for the Nationals as he turns on the rubber with that good live arm delivers that's in there strike one wow that's 89 on the gun and it's a change up it's like good hitting if you're looking for it but because of the speed differential between the fast ball and that pitch really hard for a hitter to get on time with it looking to get the tying run on base tough to take a two- strike change up that just missed think it Frozen and the right-hander deals keeps the it back going with a foul ball left-and hitter Waits hacks and misses it's a strike out well that right there is what you want to see out of your closer come in and close the door cancel any hope that that opponent has in making some type of comeback in the ball game tell you what that helps him settle in and that helps everybody else relax a little bit to get these other two outs tenna in the box now takes strike one one run game here in the top of the ninth just missed that one well upstairs and it's two and two the pitch foul ball another two- two upcoming he's gone off speed he needs to elevate here with two strikes out of the Zone ripped into left for a base hit and now the tying run is into scoring position a perfect example right there that plate discipline it pays off the deeper he gets into a cow the more comfortable he becomes and he usually wins the battle now a move being made at second base entering as the pinch Runner Nasim Nunes one out runner at second Juan YZ digging in for the Nationals first pitch doesn't find the Zone well comfortable or not these are the situations closers they seem to live for when you get into some hot water a jam tough spot whatever you want to call it but this is where they earn their keepy so the tying run at second on the ground to Third throws the first in time well there's a lot riding on that in Bat right there nice job of the pitcher to Bear Down make the pitch get the ground ball excellent piece of work Joy so they're down to their final out and now the first baseman Joey Gallow trying to deliver is the hero in the dirt and that is ball one trying to close out a one-run lead here at the top of the night all doubled up on the off speed there we talk about the power fast ball but he's working a little differently here lifted in the air right center field Paris after it he's got it ball game and the Braves strand the tying run on base to win well this turned out to be an exciting very wellplayed game always feels great when you can take the lead in the eighth at home come out in the ninth crowd will be behind that pitcher as he tries to get those final three outs everybody goes home happy with a win like this a 32 final score in this one they
