here in Miami lone Depot Park the show has an NL East matchup it's the Washington Nationals taking on the Miami Marlins and we'll be back with the first pitch right after this just about ready to roll and today's starter Edward Cabrera and singing a special day for him he's making his major league debut here and I'm sure he's got some nerves he'll be excited for that first pitch to be in and over with so that he can set a l to pitching just like he did in the minor leagues exciting moment he's got his family in town I think This Moment's going to be a huge tone Setter for his career swing and a liner foul off to the right well they gave up on that pitch early and it ended up staying in the zone I'm sure he's kicking himself and would like that pitch again and that's off the Inside Edge and it's two and one liner caught it second Martina is line up for the Nationals one guy leading the way offensively for this club right now and chaparo and boo he's their team leader in home runs so you know the pitchers on that other side man they took a lot of time preparing for him in that pregame meeting you know he's got a lot of pop and it's real pop it's not fluky at all he can absolutely change the Outlook of a game very quickly so watch out when he steps in drops in for a hit couldn't run it down safely into second he's got a [Applause] double James Wood with his first major league hit and this is a moment I'm sure he'll never forget congrats yeah great moment for him and his family a guy works so hard and has to wait so long for this to happen and when it does can kind of be overwhelming boo you still have to stay locked in on the game but it's great when you could take a minute to just appreciate what you've done and how hard you've worked to get here so aboard and now it's Luis Garcia looking for his first big league hit right here and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed [Applause] [Music] [Applause] hitter check on the runner wood Dives and can't get back in time he's picked off great job by the defense executing that daylight Play Perfect it's such a timing thing and that middle infielder and the Pitcher have to be on the same page and it's got to be a good throw nice job right there two outs fouled off he was [Applause] [Music] late the wi to the pitch swing and a miss had him out front for the strike out we'll go to the bottom of the first 0 back here in Miami and today's starting pitcher DJ hers what do we need to know here well he's been a real quality starter for his club and coming into this one what stands out for me is that right-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 on the year it seems they have a hard time picking up his release point and backing the ball into the zone so we'll see how right-handers do against him in this one Conor Norby stands in now and watches strike [Applause] one high Chopper to Third and he picks it up and he'll put it in his pocket [Applause] next offering is downstairs it's a good [Applause] take this one popped up fouled ground first Bas side puts it away for the out and there's one down and time now for the Marlins lineup getting Guys across the plate not exactly a forte for them this year as their offense is in the bottom third of the lead league in run scored Boog it becomes extremely frustrating and then what happens is guys press especially in run scoring opportunities and situations and on top of that I mean you really make it harder on your pitcher he feels like he's got to be perfect to go out there and win a ball game or at least to put the team in a position to win a ball game so they've got to figure out a way to relax get those Runners across when they have them on and especially when they're in scoring position and inside corner for a strike and the count even at one backto back fast balls in that last one called for a strike probably go away but look for him to come back in there to try to finish you [Applause] off and the pitch and another ball two two one out base is empty knocks that one away and we'll do it again one down base is empty swing and a miss slider got him for strike three and that's the first strike out of his major league career and it could be the first of many if he meets the goals he set for himself and the expectations others have for him he doesn't want to just win games he wants to dominate at this level do you think Young pitchers can sometimes get too caught up in trying to rack up pays early in their career Bo I think they can it's kind of like a hitter that doesn't have power The Thrill is still hitting a ball over the fence and so for a guy even if he doesn't have power stuff or strikeout stuff a strikeout is still something that makes him stick his chest out a little bit further two through a tough one that'll fire up the Dugout time to go hit and we're back Al the rookie DH Andre chaparo trying to pick up his first knock in the big leagues Cabrera back to work he was late there strike one Cabrera the tall right 25 lb and he was born in the Dominican [Applause] Republic ball to strike and that one fouled [Applause] off on the ground Norby slings to first one up one down third J up now for Washington Jose tenna check swing he went too far and it's a strike next offering is in for a [Applause] strike bounce to the left side rolls across the diamond two up two down they'll off to a great start he's really cruising out there on the mound he's got a chance to get through these first two innings with under 20 pitches That Could set him up to go deep into this game here's field that on the back hand and gather himself get his feet underneath him he had a long throw but he knew he had plenty of time to take that extra step secure the grip and finish the throw Otto Lopez thing to get out but today the conditions were right got just enough of it and I think the Back Spin really helped that thing carry and here's the rookie center fielder that's in there going one can there's one thing on his mind this at bat getting that first hit at the big league level and a good eye there one0 Line Drive short hop to third throws the first in time next to hit for the Nets James catch and there are two outs man boo I love watching an outfielder take on the wall to make that play and it's a lot easier to watch from up here because that can be painful in the end you know the Wall's coming up on you quickly so you have to maintain concentration in able to make that catch and hold on to it after contact Burger the next to hit takes [Applause] outside the Nationals up by two here in the last half of the Third next pitch misses way [Applause] outside right through there for a [Applause] strike two outs and a foul [Applause] ball and a swing and a miss and that's that so no run runs on no hits no errors and one left three Innings complete it's the Nationals two and the Marlins nothing and welcome back to the ballpark start of the fourth and now up for Washington Luis Garcia here comes a pitch that's inside and it's w to [Applause] know that one is absolutely belted and that gets down into the Gap around first and hustling for second now he launches a throw over his head and he's into second with nobody out Luis Garcia with his first major league hit and this is a moment I'm sure he'll never forget congrats yeah great moment for him and his family a guy works so hard and has to wait so long for this to happen and when it does can kind of be overwhelming boo you still have to stay locked in on the game but it's great when you could take a minute to just appreciate what you've done and how hard you worked to get here now it's the Nationals cleanup hitter Andres chaparo he's over one [Applause] that one finds the Zone one [Applause] one runner in scoring position nobody out top half of inning number four and there's a foul [Applause] ball and o two swings and misses not what you're looking for after the lead off double a strike out and there's one away take a look at the three pitch sequence here pretty simple in terms of putting them away at the plate once your head 02 as a pitcher you can really expand the zone and see how aggressive that hitter is going to be trying to protect in battle and right there clearly he was in swing mode but all you can do is hope to foul that off up now for Washington Jose tenna and a foul ball at the belt and [Music] fires Garcia leads off second with one gone in the inning swing and a miss stru him out pulled the string of the change up so backto back strikeouts now and they still haven't managed to do anything with the lead off double yeah Bo and you just don't want to get careless here if you've done a really good job to get two outs after that lead off doubled as you mentioned and just got to execute your pitches and it's a non-issue CJ Abrams now at the plate that one finds the zone and it's own and one [Applause] [Applause] just missed next offering is in for a strike another got now to an early lead but you don't want to take these opportunities for granted with two outs still lock in with at B drive in that run you may not have another runner in scoring position the rest of this ball game inside and hit him he had two strikes on him and he hit him here's Joey Gallow that wasn't even close you know sometimes a guy will barely miss the zone and hit someone but right there he completely lost the handle and that's when it gets a little scary and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter [Applause] good eye in that spot one ball one [Applause] strike two outs that's a good piece of hitting right there it's early but you still want to move the runner up and give your team a chance to score that's exactly what happened so you better believe your teammates are happy with the after that at [Applause] bat and fouled off Runner around at third one gone swings and misses and a count is old and two big Jam right there I hate it as a hitter but standing in center field you can't help but chuckle a little bit next pitch is outside O2 fast way out of the Zone I think he's trying to speed him up got to stay back off speed's probably coming swing and a miss and he chases that one in the dirt gets the out two down after the strike out and an excellent job keeping it right there oh I'm not sure what he was waiting on right there you got the change up and still late on it you rarely see that it almost makes you think that he was trying to set the pitcher up I mean you can't catch up to the off speed stuff there's no way you're going to touch a fast and now here is Griffin Kut in the air left side makes the grab and that'll end the inning one left for Miami and they're down two nothing and we're back and now the switch catcher Drew Millis it's interesting he plays kind of a a power spot defensively but runs pretty well so when you're looking at that position you're not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed but he does lifted in the air out to left makes the catch for the out one down that's a really nice play ranging back into the outfield for that catch we all know those could be a little tricky especially if the wind swirling around out there here's the center fielder and he grounds one to the right side Norby tosses to First and the first two set down at the top of the fifth the right field number three Dylan Cruz now it's the right fielder Dylan Cruz well on the mound very efficient able to produce an outcome it seems like within the third or fourth pitch just about every bat two down nobody on we're at the top of the F that one hammer but pulled [Applause] foul two down nobody on swing and a miss struck him out and it's a one two three inning Nationals go quietly they're up two nothing back here in Lone def Park we head to the bottom of the fif here's the first baseman David Hensley Henley line of the pitch fast ball for a strike going one over 80% of his first pitches are strikes you're doing that you could have a really good day out there in the mound next offering is down low you know these Marlins just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game chasing pitches has been a big part of the story we've seen it quite a bit today it's been tough for him to make contact at times and it just doesn't look like they're seeing it very well as a group up theid middle and he can't come up with it David Hensley with his first major league hit and this is a moment I'm sure he'll never forget congrats yeah great moment for him and his family a guy works so hard and has to wait so long for work to get here now it's the Marlins catcher yeah that's a little high and on the mound you know confidence has to be pretty high with all of the swings and misses he's had him eaten out of the palm of his hand pretty much all game the pitch check swing did he go yes he did one ball one [Applause] strike and that is cut on and miss and that's strike two with two strikes may see some movement over there at first base trying to stay out of the double play right here flyball down the line makes the grab on the run under tagging from first safe he beats it excellent play out there and he does it in a huge spot that wall it can very easily jar the ball loose when you bang into it so that could have been a really different outcome back to the top of the lineup next to hit Conor [Applause] Nory it's offline and he scores so he gets two Milestones with that hit his first big leag knock and he drives in his first run as well yeah you love to get both of those out of the way with just one swing of the bat and it makes the special moment even more special it's not just an individual accomplishment when you're also driving in a run for your team that's an IT bat he's never going to forget for his major league debut and a moment he will never forget better believe that it's always so special the first time you get into a big league ball game I did it as a position player but for him as a pitcher I'm sure there's some nerves there probably don't want to squeeze the baseball too tight just relax and do what you're capable of doing and here is Griffin conai outside low one [Applause] and0 man on second two down and there's the [Applause] strike now [Applause] Miss swing in a Miss as he was late that time wow good luck catching up to that [Applause] one the pitch swings and misses struck him out sometimes he wears the emotion on the sleeve but that's okay as as long as you get results and right there thrilled with the punch out to get out of a jam all set for the start of the inning and now the catcher comes up to him Drew [Applause] Millis and a pitch that one fouled off righty to the plate check swing he one too far and it's a strike and down on strikes one gone here and now the center fielder you talk about Elite defensive players especially in the middle of the diamond and thisy guy is at the top of the list that's down and in yeah we go beyond just the you know Fielding percentage and you know what it looks like but the ability to have a range and you know close holes that you know are normally there against an average Defender but this guy is special and you can see it in his first step quickness [Applause] liner Bas hit and now the lineup turns over with one away now right [Applause] and now up for Washington Dylan [Applause] Cruz turned on but that's foul down the third Baseline H and the one thing about that is speed never goes in a slump and defense should neither hitting wise you can struggle you can lose your mechanics but the thing that you can do consistently every single game is play great defense if you're talented in that way and this is what this guy does pitch out but no action now move to First and he Dives back in safely [Applause] here's a one-1 and a foul ball one run game one out one on got him swinging came inside with that two strike fast nicely and just bunched him up on the inside part of the plate couldn't get around on it and catch it out front any times if you do it's a foul ball and you know a lot of pitchers they really don't like working inside with two stries because they do not want to hit that batter and when they've got him up against the ropes got to figure out a way to put him away did a nice job right there wood stands in with two away as he takes a [Music] [Applause] [Music] ball and the rhander deals run around the go throw a second great jump and that is a stolen base it won't even close two outs is a great time to try to steal second especially when you have a guy with some Wheels On First Defense probably knew it was coming but figured we better focus on trying to get this hitter out two outs and one in scoring position R goes again pitch misses in throw save that's a stolen base very risky right there to try to steal third with two outs and a Leander at the plate and there's an been Lane for that catcher to throw down but he gambled now he's at third 90 ft closer goes just foul clearly trying to stay back a little bit longer for that change off as he fouls that fast ball back swings through it and that's a strike out a big first down here in the seventh fi of the punch out yeah it just does so much to change the Outlook of an important inning like this lead off hitter so critical in setting the table when you got a tight game like this so strike out really well he didn't want to go after him with the fast all in that nothing but off speed stuff even with all the change UPS and somehow he was still early on the swing so I think he had to be thinking it improve your game but ultimately you either have it or you don't up the middle now the throw to first on the Run not in time he's safe a nice job getting there good throw but very difficult to get out of play there's one guy that I can think about Boo who started as a third baseman Alex Gordon and then became an elite perennial gold Glover out in left field for the Kansas City Royals but he's a guy when you watch him play you would imagine that that's all he ever played in his life was the out two outs chase that time yeah some guys just have instincts right I mean that's the way it goes we talk about Larry Walker the Hall of Famer and his Instinct on the bases despite the fact that he didn't play a ton of baseball as a kid bows It Off still one and two remember Mark cat is a real good defensive outfielder good instincts not great speed and down on strikes he goes and that'll do it no runs one hit no errors and a man left five six and seven will lead things off in the bottom of the night it's the Nationals three and the Marlins two we're back and on the mound is the closer Kyle finan a chance at his first save of the Year number 67 Kyle well one run game now the third baseman Jonah BR so important to stay within yourself especially for this hitter not known to be a power guy or a home run hitter he needs to set the table by getting on with a walker a base hit and the pitch on the ground right side can't glove it cleanly but he Wis the foot race the first good job of knowing how much time he had there that's why you hug the lines on the corners late in a ball game like this positioned perfectly and up next for Miami Otto Lopez known for his late inning heroics in there and it's own one [Applause] there's the strike well we call that keyho holding even though it's piece and stays [Music] alive 3-2 now Ball Four he Lo in and that'll keep the line moving that's a great at he saw a lot of pitches and earned a one here the bottom of the n one and now the right fielder Griffin kok for three with two strikeouts and a fly out swing and a miss it's amazing to me how many closers and backend relievers just throw absolute gas these days I never had a [Applause] chance left hand hitter Waits and that one moves his feet [Applause] kicks and fires outside low the count now two and two to lay off that pitch [Applause] down rander kick steals still two and two after the foul ball [Applause] struck him out looking and they're down to their last out well he's going to have some thinking to do when he leaves the ballark after this his third strike out and this one looking obviously so he's been a little overmatched he's got to find a way just to be more competitive up there at the plate Marlins down to their final out and at the play for Miami David Hensley swing in a Miss as he was out front typically The Outfield defense will play a little bit deeper just to keep the ball in front make sure that runner on first doesn't come all the way around to score
