this is a sports custy [Applause] production hey there Heather H there's Jeff C welcome you to another Sports casty birthday boy and the birthday boy for today August the 9th is a former tennis player himself but he's a more known for being a tennis coach and Tennis commentator or ESPN he did win 20 singles titles in his ATP career and was actually like number four at one point in 1990 which was amazing in the Pete San and Andre Agy era he actually won a bronze medal at the 198 Olympics in the first Olympics that tennis became a metal sport in the modern era and he's coached several top players most notably Andre Agy Andy rodic Andy Murray Kish Cur and Coco goof who he's now coaching he's 63 years old his name is Brad Gilbert Brad Gilbert was born to a Jewish Family in Oakland California he began playing tennis at four years old after his father took up the sport who was a history teacher and an owner of a real estate firm despite being undersized he did become a pretty good player and then he went to Foothill College at Joo a junior college in California to play tennis for um I was part of the junior Davis Cup team in 1981 he took part in the Maba games in 1981 you know the biggest athletic award uh Athletics competition for Jewish athletes but anyway 1982 he went to Pepper dying to play tennis and reached the final of the NCAA tournament losing to Mike Leach 7563 he would go pro in 1982 and went in taipe his first top level event andway Gilbert won 20 top level singles to his career the Vegas was the ciny Masters in 1989 he was also runner up 20 times himself including since 1990 losing to Stephan edberg he was pretty good in 1989 he won five singles titles his b in sensey was huge because he beat Pete SAS Michael Chang Boris Becker and Stephen edberg just to get to the final anyway he only went to two quarterfinals in singles as he went to the quarters of the 87 US Open losing to Jimmy Conor and the quarters of wimbl in 1990 losing the Boris Becker he seemed to be pretty impressive and all that so anyway I like many many players of his era Gilbert did not have a major offensive weapon such as the overpowering serf or forehead his best asset was keeping the ball in play so yeah it was just anyway what happened so he was a good Davis Cup player to winning bronze at the Olympics and soul in tennis in 1988 what need some f the weird thing is after he won his 20th event in Brisbane he went to eight finals and never won so that was just pathetic there's Grand Slams couldn't do much just's two quarter final appearances part of the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and the peppery Hall of Fame and they well so in 1985 he retired as a player and became a tennis coach he knew what he could do so his first major project was Andre egy after egy fell a little flat but anyway Agy would actually be happy that Gilbert coached him Gilbert would coach Agy from 1984 to 2002 and at that time egy won six majors which was very impressive and all that so yeah Agy when he was challenging sis for number one in the world had Brad Gilbert in his corner and then in June 2003 he became the coach of Andy rodic who was the who became the 2003 US Open Champion under Gilbert's guidance and would get to the 24 Wimbledon finals so roic seemed okay but they parted ways in 2004 and then 2006 he would take care of Andy Murray so he was trying his best in 16 months of working together Gilbert Got Annie Murray to be number eight in the world of course that was before Annie Murray became part of the big four with Federer Nadal and jck and then you were concentrate on br's number two Alex banovich and all that but I don't think he did too much and then Gilbert went back to coaching by 2011 and was partnered with K Nishikori Japan and then he M work on a Trav basis with Sam query and then surprisingly after 11 years away from coaching he became the part of the coaching staff for Coco go and helping Coco golf win the 2023 US Open so Brad Gilbert knows something we don't know although golf did follow early in the Olympics tournament Gilbert's the tennis analyst for ESPN and the auor of the book winning ugly about how an average player can defeat a skilled opponent and better the mental game say I bet Gilbert is a fantastic commentary for ESPN basically the backbone of ESPN's tennis coverage especially the grand lamps he resides with his wife in Malibu having three children owns a tennis shop obviously he would so anyway Annie Murray did a fantastic job so he did a good job he got egy six grand slam titles got rodic at US Open got Andy Murray on the fast track to his career and took care of Coco taking care of Coco golf so what's there not to like about bad Gilbert and ESPN and tennis and all that I know I do like them my guys any i'mna do
