(Not So) Fun With Rebuses! NYT Crossword Thursday July 25 2024

well hello everyone and welcome to data cross puzzles I am Kevin and uh today we're going to do a Thursday puzzle uh so special day for me to to do this I have not really done too many Thursdays and uh today we have a non-standard grid uh this is a 16x 15 grid uh 16 or actually 16 columns by 15 rows so it's actually a 15 by 16 I I suppose uh this one is constructed by Damon J ginsky and this is his 47th puzzle being published in the New York Times and uh so he's a veteran Constructor here and this will be his 10th Thursday uh so uh going back to the theme Here we or the uh the grid uh a 16 or a 15x 16 grid um usually you need to make those uh I I I think when uh you're trying to fit a theme uh and so there must be I'm supposing that the there's going to be a 16 letter long clue that's what I'm guessing that's going to play hugely into the um into the theme and so uh I can already see it through the uh through this the screen here that uh yeah I think it's 27 across or 37 across is the probably right smack in the middle row uh go going all the way across uh that's going to be that's going to play a big role in solving this uh so Thursdays are a themed puzzle and um I don't do these often uh I'm not particularly great at them so but today I'm going to be mindful and go through each clue and really try to give my best effort to um to think through these so let's get started uh build up so a felet word for build up so so could be a mass m a m a SS if you build up a collection of something you amass a collection let's try to see if we can confirm that with one down blank Douglas home former British PM oh God goodness I'm not going to be good with um with British politics um especially former uh former politicians um Douglas home doesn't ring a bell maybe could be Adam or maybe it's a uh a different name uh let's see let's try two down hit the ball well in uh baseball slang I guess you could say you mash the ball there if you're not a fan of something maybe you're anti maybe and the pike relative so Pike could be a fish I think or uh this like that um uh spear or uh like yeah that you like stick things on like I guess I think a pike is like a spear like a a weapon uh I don't think so if this is anti then what would this one be P yeah I don't see it a big name in oh maybe this still is anti because I think the big name in cosmetics is Estee as an Estee Lauder or [Music] um ooh first uh theme uh clue here is a abiso cookie brand and there's an H in the in the second spot there and it's related to the theme let's just take a peek at the theme finishes in Grand style like the answers to the starred Clues maybe like goes out with a bang or something like that and then a Nabisco cookie B brand uh something that explod something exploding or something let's try to let's put anti into not a fan of and see if we can finish this um this upper left corner here nisco cookie brand [Music] thin maybe thin something symbols of sovereignty let's think about this one then um uh SE no I don't know about that that that wouldn't fit anyway um a pike relative don't know views as the future um these into sees maybe it sees some something BCS into let's try to get through 24 across and hopefully get some help here with five down either parent of Zeus oh boy uh so I think is this a classifier here uh like what were the parents of Zeus I mean gods [Music] or something H I don't know we're not going to get help there so Council abbreviated um and I think this spelling means that it is going to be a noun uh I don't think you say well I guess it could be a verb as well to counil um I'm not seeing a a three-letter abbreviation here for that though uh don't know I guess we'll try to get through the other Corners the other parts of the the grid before going back to the upper left corner um and and see if we can fill that out adjective that's been called one of the most hated words in the English language I think it's moist I think uh that one just like hits people Str strangely um and Hunter in the night sky is Orion and so the the constellation right with Orion's Belt the three stars and I think like oh goodness I think I want to say like something the belt like points to the north star or something like that to Polaris I think um we could be ity or yeah I think ity okay but then oh get a little bit more help with 20 one across a cookie brand for Nabisco well I mean chips a Hoy but is that would fit except for the S at the end chips of hoys chips of hoys okay all right so maybe one down is Alec and we wanted to be a little bit OB obis Skating here uh with cluing uh rather than giving like something like Alec bald or Alec Guinness uh so I guess yeah I'm still able to get through this upper left I think cuz a pike relative could be a lance right okay that's the um the one there oh maybe it is scepter and maybe it is C into and then oh yes okay so the parents of Zeus are Titans okay and then sees into seems correct and to head off could be to avert to get ahead of to avert disaster George RR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire for one is a saga songwriter noello don't know this name what name could fit in here with vo in the middle um I don't know a scroll holder an arm an aore ivore maybe I don't don't see any name that uh is familiar to me feature of what a could have Shoulda is a silent um uh wait what is it I guess this the V would be silent because you're taking out would have could have should have would have should have could have I guess maybe the V okay and then a specialty Espress espresso drink is probably a mocha aoka latte oh of course well in the actual okay so yeah it's silent l in these words yeah silent l so this is a mocha mocha latte uh the [Music] whole I don't know the whole whole difficult corner for for me to fill English town known for its Mineral Springs o okay new one for me here let's see English town known for its Mineral Springs don't know is uh is Damon by chance living in the in the UK uh because there's a there's a lot of British uh and English uh trivia in here major fantasy sports [Music] platform oh goodness um not Yahoo uh there's like the the beding ones um like Draft Kings and um oh I forget the other one FanDuel uh that won't fit goodness all right one's doing impressions uh the only thing that really fit fits that I see could be mines maybe and then that's right uh I don't know maybe this isn't goes out with a bang the spellers clarification yeah uh it might not be go out with the bang I don't really see anything helping me here that to that upper right corner is going to be really difficult for me totally perp fxed um a Gabe if your mouth is open you're you're like very confused so maybe this isn't goes out with a bang cuz I don't alternate spellings no Al not alternate spells but alternate um definitions uh you know alternate meanings alternate um what's the origin of the word what is the um what are the things that they use sound right sis this one this this feels just tortured to me sorry sorry Damon this is um this one's rough this is a rough puzzle oh boy um here some um uh some of the more highbrow uh solvers are probably uh loving this one but uh I got to say I'm I would not recommend this one to newbies um to beginners not even maybe people like me and intermediate solvers this is this is torturous okay um this is a torturous P puzzle here totally perplexed is maybe maybe at awe not in awe at awe that's so weird that would be so weird oh boy I am just having a very difficult time here um goes out with a bang I really think it's goes out with a bang but then what is all these other oh goodness um so I'm 30 minutes in I think I think I'm just about Happy with um with with how how good of a a shot I've given it so I think I might just start looking up some of the factual Clues here although I didn't see musical aptitude this is ear uh and then that's right maybe uhuh but then that's like truth or I don't know major fantasy sports isn't it Yahoo or my goodness what is it I don't know fantasy sports platforms of of modern times um last time I I did this it was like on ESPN or something like that one's doing impressions probably ends in s and then transforms also ends in s okay um so Impressions could also mean that you're like indenting something right um maybe it ends with e ERS that's right maybe yeah oh wait a minute oh oh oh maybe I'm seeing something totally wrong here because chips aoy is the brand and then we're tacking on an S here at the end wait why is there a why I put an S there because the down we have a Rebus by the way uh to enter this on um on the on the desktop he to hit Escape um or click the the there's like a RIS button right above the uh the the clue list um okay why was I putting that in there it's got to be bang at the end that's why that's why the bang is in there Yahoo bang okay oh right the exclamation point also known as a bang um it's bang symbol exciting in a noisy or violent way loud bang don't know okay okay we might be able to get somewhere with this then let's try to take a deep breath and at see could be perplexed try to get my brain back back in this and maybe we can rally to get this puzzle finished uh spell clar clarification maybe as in one's doing impressions could be apers somebody who Apes another imitating Peter Lori is it uh and then this has to be a bang Bangles is the okay rigid bracelets are bangal that makes okay gosh ah reuses are this was a pretty [Music] um I feel like it was a well disguised Reus because I don't I don't know this should have been obvious to me this should have should have jumped out at me this the whole shebang I don't know my brain's not just wasn't wasn't thinking about that so maybe a scroll holder is an arm but then a plant in the aliam family is is a leam um maybe it's not a vert head off it has to be a scroll holder like you hold it up with your arms right I'm thinking that it's just as basic as that um oh gosh it's this puzzle this puzzle um I want to put the this in in pencil here and we will come back to that corner because that is the most suspect um well that side is the most suspect to me right now um something bang will a Cather no set in 1880s Nebraska uh but what is 56 down an RSVP convenience oh oh oh this comes up frequently it's a self um what is the A okay so let's go ahead and hopefully try to finish this crossb uh it is running very long here so um if you're a I I'm sure that the season solvers have have probably have long left but uh if you're an a beginner then uh you know and you're looking things up to like me then don't feel too bad because I have no idea how to finish this puzzle um I made a lot of Headway with the other corners and um just having having a very difficult time here um so hopefully we can uh can finish this off here so if you ran what so you say something aloud ran could be aired that it ran on TV um and we're starting to get a little bit sluggish here a digression could be and a side okay a digression like you go off on a tangent or as I am want to do as well oh maybe it's Bart Star Bart Star was the geared towards older people uh people Gen X and older um so don't feel too bad if you're not not doing well with this one this is this this not uh not modern no uh one of 11 in the 12 Days of Christmas or the piper I guess and Otis Day and the nights are the B is the band that performs show in Animal House papy is for un Padre uh okay and I'm not far off thank you for that that that is very nice of you to to to say that I amum uh I'm glad that I'm not far off but uh why what what am I off on let's go over and um I'm going to take a look at uh songwriter noello let's go and search wkip uh noell let's disambiguate Clara Nolla Davies is uh the Welsh singer named after Clara noello uh and other uses or the Ivar ivore nollo award so I think I'm on the right track here I think I'm I'm not a fan of this puzzle um it's a little a little little outdated uh maybe it's been sitting in the queue for a long ass time who knows um I don't know uh let me look at rexword let's go to rexword let's see what what Rex has to say about this puzzle today uh let's Sor okay oh I forgot one okay yeah I forgot the uh oh right of course this was a themed clue as well I forgot the themed clue can we [Music] finish definitely did not go out with a bang here uh this was a a fizzle but uh got through it um yeah uh yeah uh this was a Thursday puzzle and uh from a vet and Constructor um so um oh look they put the the exclamation points in there for us afterwards very nice okay uh well I'll be back tomorrow for another puzzle um it really sucks that this took a a large part of my day now now I'm stuck uh going to have to go back and edit and um or maybe not so just leave everything in who's going to watch this anyway you guys don't watch this if you if you're watching this like leave
