all right that was uh Senator markk Kelly from Arizona a border state very much at the center of immigration challenges immigration policy is considered one of the biggest political challenges for the Democratic party and for kamla Harris in particular a recent poll from CBS the BBC's us partner found that 48% of likely voters believe us Southern border crossings will go up if Miss Harris wins the election 72% believe they will decrease under Donald Trump and Trump in his Republican allies have made immigration a focal point of their criticisms of Harris calling her a failed border Zar and the former president leaned into that narrative on Thursday while campaigning in the Battleground and border state of Arizona we had a borders are who was the borders she loved the title but she didn't want to do the work because she's lazy and probably more importantly than being lazy she uh wants to have an open border and you say who would want an open border where criminals can pour into our country and all you have to do is walk up there if you have the courage to do it and go to that open section stand there for a little while you'll be running back here very quickly so we went from the best numbers in recorded history to the worst numbers in recorded history or any other history and we have a Marxist that's running and I don't think you can let her this country is not ready for a Marxist president that's what our Warriors do but Democrats at the convention have fired back praising the Biden administ A's efforts on immigration they blame former president Trump for standing in the way of a bipartisan border security deal that fell apart earlier this year and Democratic senator Chris Murphy was the lead Democratic negotiator on that deal in his speech at the convention on Wednesday he called Harris quote tough as Nails on immigration and spoke about the failed measure Donald Trump's allies weren't just in the room they helped us write the whole bill it was a bipartisan bill it was a tough Bill $20 billion in new border security gave the president the emergency power to shut down the Border made compassionate but serious reforms to our Asylum system one Republican said it would have had almost unanimous support if it weren't for Donald Trump trump killed that bill and he did because he knew that if we fixed the Border he'd lose his ability to divide us his ability to Fan the Flames of fear about people who come from different places right you guys know this right hate and division that's Trump's oxygen right people people like Trump and JD Vance they need it to survive in politics okay we have we have our US Special correspondent caddy K back with us here caddy great to see you again we've just been talking a bit about immigration and we did see that split screen today didn't we of the convention going on here with this enthusiasm and Donald Trump On the Border in Arizona really taking that line of attack against kamla Harris saying she's a failed borders are what did you think of that look so what I I hear from people in the Trump campaign is that every time um Donald Trump is speaking about the economy about the border and about um immigration issues around that then those are good days and crime those are good days for Donald Trump so to see him on the border like that talking about those issues what the Democrats are trying to counter that with clearly is trying to say look this is on you we did everything we could to try and get that tough border Bill through it was uh sponsored by a republican by a Conservative Republican and Donald Trump killed it that's a pretty nuanced message to get to people now the advantage for the Democrats at the moment is that border crossings are down 40% since December and so you don't have the day-to-day images like we had over the course of the winter suia remember you're reporting on them of those people coming across the border that is helping Democrats as much as anything that's pretty much controlled by Mexico if Mexico carries on making the decision to uh enforce border regulations to keep people away from the southern border then that will help Kamala Harris because you won't have those images going into the election but it's still something that constantly in poll after poll it plls very high and Donald Trump is still ahead of KLA Harris in the polls on that yeah we just spoke to a congresswoman from Nevada briefly just a little while ago and she said look the Border numbers are down this is not going to be as big of an issue but of course Donald Trump will make it an issue you said for him in his campaign it is a good day when he's staying on policy like he did today um do you think that we're starting to see a pattern of that as he's going you know to these Battleground States and delivering these speeches you've seen a little bit of a pattern of that this week so you saw it in Michigan when he was talking about the economy this was a week that was meant to be focused on issues it was build as being focused on issues there were three big rallies three big issues that they were going to tackle the Border being one of them the trouble is and I hear this and it's a complaint that I hear from Trump's strategists and advisers is that then the president can talk for 45 minutes about immigration and then if he you know talks about the Jewish Governor Josh Shapiro that's what gets attention or if he uses the name Barack Hussein Obama again that's going to get a lot of attention it gets a lot of pickup in the Press so he's a candidate who is torn up as he says he's polling his own rally goers right and they're saying no we don't want you just to talk about policy Economic Policy that's boring we want the Trump show I mean the Trump show Trump rallies you've been to them I've been to them they're kind of a festival in a way and and that's what his rally go as once and Donald Trump feeds off the crowd so when they he pulls them and they tell him that you know they want him to go on attack that's what he wants to do yeah he says I am am that's his happier place yeah
