just about ready to go and on the hill here today Justin Verlander and singing a special day for him he's making his major league debut here and I'm sure he's got some nerves he'll be excited for that first pitch to be in and over with so that he can settle in to pitching just like he did in the minor leagues exciting moment he's got his family in town I think This Moment's going to be a huge tone Setter for his career next one misses and that's ball two and that one in the air center field McCormick has it sized up one away take a look at the lineup they do a lot of things well in this offense singy they control the strike zone they make pitchers work hard for outs and as a result one of the better OBP teams in the league well what I love about it is it's an organizational philosophy whether you go to instructional League whether you go to spring training you see these players even during batting practice when it doesn't matter they're practicing that type of approach Boo and when you have that filtering through the organization even when you call up a player they step right in and continue with the pattern that they have established at this level which ultimately leads to a lot of success this is JJ blade you know you translate on base percentage it's basically this teams that have a high on base percentage they don't make outs at a very high rate as my buddy Joe Sheen says OBP is life swing and a Fly ball in the air out towards right center field that one gets down for a hit so a two out keeps the inning alive JJ bade with his first major league hit and this is a moment I'm sure he'll never forget congrats yeah great moment for him and his family a guy works so hard and has to wait so long for this to happen and when it does can kind of be overwhelming Bo you still have to stay locked in on the game but it's great when you could take a minute to just appreciate what you've done and how hard you work to get here so two down and now a chance for sheay langers Verlander moved to First leay back in on a dive the pitch and that's too high ball four the left so two on with two away so here's Brown at the plate left hand batter Waits swings and misses and it's one and two well lots of pitches thrown in this first inning it's kind of that nightmare scenario for starting pitching but you know what it's still early enough he can settle in he can get some length if he just cleans up his mechanics a little bit swing and a miss for the strike out chase the fast up the ladder for strike three so it's no runs on a hit no errors and two are left and now the Astros go to work for the first time no [Music] score back here in Houston and pitching in this one for Oakland JT gin what do you got on him Chris well he's been a real quality starter for his club and coming into this one stands out for me is that right-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 on the year it seems they have a hard time picking up his release point and tracking the ball into the zone so we'll see how right-handers do against him in this one bottom of the first and now it's going to be Jose Altuve trying to pick up his first knock in the big leagues swinging a Miss as he was late that time here's a player known for playing better in Day games which is not always the case I mean Day game are different boo things change from game times to your daily routine but he sure makes the transition look [Applause] easy that's outside and it's a full count got him swinging and one away and that's the first strike out of his major league career and it could be the first of many if he meets the goals he set for himself and the expectations others have for him he doesn't want to just win games he wants to dominate at this level do you think Young pitchers could sometimes get too caught up to try to rack up KS early in their career H I think they can it's kind of like a hitter that doesn't have power The Thrill is still hitting the ball over the fence and so for a guy even if he doesn't have power stuff or strikeout stuff a strike out is still something let's take a look at our lineup this is a veteran Le lineup right here a lot of players with plenty of experience singy yeah no doubt about that boo these guys have been around the game for a long time and they may not have the flash that they once did but they've got the wisdom to be able to understand different situations be able to think with the opponent and sometimes this one's Fair down the line and left and it's going to be extra bases and he starts his afternoon off of the better hitters on this roster to get them on the board in the first thanks to the three-hole hitter extending the inning good at bat with two outs and he gets bregman and that is that well this guy competes hard we see the emotion there I love it great job of getting out of the jam top of the second here's the second baseman sack gell he's someone that you might not describe as having Elite level speed but he can Absol abolutely move and it is a factor in his game swings through down this guy's definitely a plus Runner but what I'd love about him is that he goes all out every single time never takes a break it's got drilled out towards left center field that's well struck and it hits the fence makes the turn and heads for second and his first big league hit as a double Zack gell with his first major league hit and this is the moment I'm sure he'll never forget congrats yeah great moment for him and his family a guy works so hard and has to wait so long for this to happen and when it does can kind of be overwhelming boo you still have to stay locked in on the game but it's great when you could take a minute to just appreciate what you've done and how hard you worked to get here digging in for Oakland Tristan Gray [Applause] [Music] man it's second and that one lifted in the air center field McCormick has it sized up makes the catch rer tags it second and he makes it up to third with one away [Applause] here's the rookie third baseman it's interesting he plays kind of a a power spot defensively but runs pretty well so when you're looking at that position you're not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed but he does and another ball and I think that skill set really upgrades the position because when you have that kind of speed it makes the whole team that much better [Applause] kicks and Deals swing and a miss what about him playing another position on defense one that would require a little more range absolutely and I think if push came to shove where they had to make a a move aren a game could surprise a lot of people you might even be able to put him in center field sharp grounder that's through for a base hit run scores easily and it's one [Applause] nothing so he gets two Milestones with that hit his first big leag knock and he drives in his first run as well yeah you love to get both of those out of the way with just one swing of the bat and it makes the special moment even more special it's not just an individual accomplishment when you're also driving in a run for your team that's an it bad he's never going to forget Runner on at first with one gone striding to the plate now for Oakland Jacob Wilson here's the pitch Runner goes ball outside save at second with a stolen base singy he definitely showed off the wheels there yeah and it turned out to be a bang bang play stat cast gives us the data and that stolen base wasn't possible without that Sprint [Applause] speed 32 in the dirt and the throws offline safe at third so a wild pitch allow the runner to [Applause] advance that's towards Center base hit and a run in to score now a long throw home in there safely and they take a two-run lead so he he gets two Milestones with that hit his first big league knock and he drives in his first run as well yeah you love to get both of those out of the way with just one swing of the bat and it makes over Lawrence Butler up next for the A's left-and hitter Waits close one doesn't get the call two and one and a pitch comes up empty that's strike two and the pitch that one just misses three and two now really good take especially with two strikes outside and that is ball four now Brent ler up next for the a s he's got a history of coming through in the big spots I know I like to talk about I'm not sure whether clutch actually exists but you look at the numbers and this guy always seems to deliver in those spots Di and he can't hang on still able to get it there in time so a tough play but well after putting up a nice Inning on offense got some runs across this is where you look for the starter to go out there have a shutdown inning don't give that other team any hope uh you just hope that he can get through this inning get the bats back up there while they're hot it's his first strike out at this level but it definitely won't be his last so you know these early are all part of the process for a rookie and trust me big league pitching just looks different than minor league pitching he still has plenty of opportunties ahead of him in this one though and next to hit for Houston Jeremy Peña the one-1 late on that fast ball one ball two strikes kicks and fires now the slide ball to Right Center it falls in and that's a hit Jeremy Peña with his first major league hit and this is a moment I'm sure he'll never forget congrats yeah great moment for him and his family a guy works so hard and has to wait so long for this to happen and when it does can kind of be overwhelming this is a guy who is very highly regarded defensively fun to watch him control stuff behind the plate good game call good at framing but it's that big arm that really stands out next offering in there for a strike and the count is filled up you come into the game knowing that unless the ball's in the dirt or gets by him we're probably not going to steal anything today so that's where you want to get a little more aggressive on your secondary lead and hope that some base hits some slogs some home runs can come into play [Applause] [Applause] and a payoff pitch knocks that one away and we'll do it again well I'll say this as a former position player and base stealer when you come into a game and you've got a guy like this behind the dish with a big arm you really have to change your approach can't try to steal cu will get thrown out maybe get a little bigger lead be aggressive on the secondary but this type of guy shuts the running game down here's the left fielder Seth [Music] [Applause] you consider the way the game is run now doesn't even matter that much if your starter doesn't go that deep deep because teams are really aggressively building their bullpens out towards Right Center when you see a guy take a slider on the outside part of the plate and hit an opposite field home run fires you up because not only is he flexing the muscles to show the pop that kind of approach he's got it run tags from third he's in score the sa F it's 3-1 well that's a quality of bat right there you know the situation you need something in the air and deep enough and that's exactly what he the play that ball exploded off his Bat and off the warning track as well as it bounced over the fence it sounded really good too just put together a really nice swing and just missed a home run Vic kartini at the plate right through there for a strike the one two and to swing and a miss inning over and it could have been worse he in tough spot had to make a great pitch did it got the strike out gets out of the jam clearly he's happy with those results and we we're back John chambie with Chris Singleton and set to lead off the fourth number 12 and the pitch swing and a miss chased it out of there as a speedy potential base runner when with two strikes you just struggle to put the ball in play you don't even have to get a hit at that point you can help your team just by reaching on an eye on the pitch count this time of the year guys can start to run on fumes a little bit mechanics can drop off and we know they need him to be fresh and ready for big innings in October swing and a there's not much margin for error but at the same time there's a reason they're put in these situations looking to get the tying run on base close but called a ball now two balls in a strike well play
