Phillies shutdown by Ben Lively, Cleveland Guardians. Drop game 1 of series 3-1

[Applause] [Music] hello good evening out there to everybody uh we've been on air for a while but this is our new link the post game show link uh where the Phillies just got a double play there to get out of the top of the ninth and now they're entering the bottom of the ninth down three runs to one only run this game coming on a brace stot solo shot uh haven't been able to get anybody else home yet uh overall just kind of a uh a weird Vibes night down there really sloppy defense some awful umpiring in the beginning um not coming through just a sloppy game we think poor body language this game just kind of a weird evening down in Citizens Bank Park yeah unfortunately the biggest current concern for me out of everything is not the score it's not the ums it's the actual like you said the body language of the Phillies and I know during our watch long shout out to everybody who joined us during our watch long as we were hanging out in your living rooms with you or cars or man caves woman caves wherever you're watching from something just feels really off about the Phillies and I know we had spoke in our pregame show and in our emergency pod earlier today since we've had plenty of chances to talk all day about the Phillies about thinking that a trade for Austin Hayes the trade deadline should hopefully spark the Phillies yet here we are in the ninth and it feels like this is the most flat when I look at the season as a whole that I've seen and there's been some ugly losses from the Phillies this season but this one feels really off and really just uncharacteristic from the defense to the lack of emotion even on Bryson stott's beautiful home run like I don't have all the camera footage so I can't see obviously from here in the studio everything that The Dugout did and how the guys celebrated but even that like that should be a pickme up moment you finally get on the scoreboard it's a close game just feels like they've been very much going to the Motions yeah and now you get one of the best uh Bullpen arms in the game and Emanuel class who takes the mound here uh Brandon Marsh leading it off uh we'll get into the Brandon Marsh Austin Hayes uh situation after the game uh John Foley is going to join us from Citizens Bank Park uh once Rob Thompson speaks to the media curious what Rob has to say um I W I wonder how much he wanted to talk to Brandon and Johan uh before the game before speaking to the media to kind of break it to him that yeah at least for the foreseeable future you guys are going to be a platoon in center field um so the Brandon Marsh grounds out to second base Emanuel CL with one down here does not feel like the Phillies evening unfortunately no we talked about this guy a lot in the off season we did and now we get to see him um rocking the pink hair in there uh looks kind of cool yeah I think it works I need to see it down and like with an outfit I I just need to who scores runs off this guy like I he's got a s erra who's that team how does not any is three blown saves cios grounds out to the best third baseman in baseball so obviously about to be game we know class throws super hard but the cutter has just been so so good for him you know 96 97 cutter uh um obviously he gets just a ton of Chase he doesn't walk guys he strikes a ton of guys out like his stuff is filthy we know that yeah but like to me the the cutter has gotten better and better and better as uh a primary pitch like he's almost he doesn't even throw the four seam anymore like it's just he he is a dominant pitcher who basically comes at you the way that mariana rivera did he throws 80 81% Cutters jez it's disgusting it's uh I'm trying to think a lot of buang guys are having good years is he the is he the best uh I off the off the top of my head I would probably say Yes um strike obviously you know strikeout rates down a little bit he's struck out 40 over 47 which is uh a little bit lower than it was a couple years ago but he said a point this game is over he said a 6 whip 76 ra that's filthy he has given up I didn't realize it was that good he's so good he's unbelievable wow and he's still he might be the best contract in baseball uh as we're about to anticipate an a Phillies loss here let me just look that up fourth Series in a row that the Phillies have lost the first game e not a good stat that's something that's been a positive from this team is that they jump out on opponents score runs early score runs first and then win the first game of each series allowing you spot with a three hit evening wait a minute a little three hit uh night for Bryson uh yeah Emanuel class uh best contract in baseball he's giv up 25 hits this year you make that number 26 um Emanuel class for the Guardians this year 2.9 Million next year for the Guardians 4.9 million it's a steal 6.4 million the year after that and and then get this Tyler if he keeps it going they have Club options in 27 and 28 for 10 million per yeah it's un an unbelievable contract they would be almost foolish to not I mean unless something happens I know it's you know a couple years from now but like you're G to get an elite closer for four years for a grand total of what $28 million that's that's Insanity in this market it was a fiveyear $20 million contract with the two options unreal wow averages four million a year they had them for two million last year insane that must be cool so $2 million to bank uh that's the game he banked 44 saves 44 saes for2 million what what's the math on that yeah please uh check out that math real quick oh man that's filthy and that to your face in a close the game already down two runs it was over before it even started so and Ben Lively gets a player of the game what kind of special hell is this last year Emanuel class made a now granted again this is relative because it's a lot of money to US everyday people uh but he made $45,000 per save geez wow that's it wow for one of the the the maybe the elite Premier closer in the game 45 $5,000 well um really not anything positive to say about tonight except I think Christopher Sanchez looked pretty good Bryson stot three hit game those are my positives the end have a nice day uh am I missing anything nope um Emanuel class is really good that's not positive for us that's positive for the C VD show yes oh I think it would be C you got to have c e v no there's no e probably C LV D huh c v d there's no vows oh that's probably like clv because you got to have a v in there clv d clv d CL or CLD CLD yeah I don't know anyway it doesn't it doesn't exist maybe one day it will and they can talk about Emanual CLA glowingly oh oops positive for the Phillies um that was it tomorrow's a new day The Sun Will Come Out Tom that's F and um there's still a lot of baseball left to be played this weekend and you can still win the series it is possible all the series that they've lost actually I mean most of I'd have to look back but the majority of this series in general has been them winning game one I wonder what the stat when for a while yeah I wonder what the stat is for when they lose game one but it unfortunately is the fourth straight Series where the Phillies Dro game one another ugly game one which as we know the first game sets a tone for the series it gives you some like you know Good Vibes going into the rest of weekend you now know you only have to win one more obviously winning the first one you could be thinking oh we can sweep but more importantly we just need to win one more game to win this series versus now you have to win the next two and uh the also unfortunate part about this is the fact that the Phillies are coming off of three straight series losses to the Oakland A's the Pittsburgh Pirates and then the Minnesota Twins and the vies are very low and today felt like you know like hitting rock bottom a little bit it just seemed very off and uh not a good day so yeah positives oh yeah I forgot that's what I'm supposed to be talking about positives uh thought Christopher Sanchez and we got to see Austin hay in AFF Phil's uniform bam I didn't even see him did they show him just on Twitter oh okay yeah he's here he's he's in uniform he's in a dug out and that's going to be a lot of Rob Thompson postgame uh discussion points we'll talk to as soon as he joins us after Rob's press conference um it is cool uh that does help a little bit with tonight's loss knowing that something different is on the horizon yeah uh Weston Wilson got the pinch at bat tonight the pinch hit tonight uh not Austin Hayes who did report in time but uh Rob Thompson decided to not use him this evening and uh I would fully expect tomorrow starting in left field uh and maybe we'll have to I guess the lineup doesn't change much cuz Martian stot flipped so he'll probably maybe they move castios up one for Hayes and put him in the seven but he's either going to be in the six or the seven hole probably I would anticipate him being a little bit lower um so that'll be cool I mean that's something tomorrow yeah this is so fun we have so much to talk about um I I just don't even know when you look at this team and how the game went um how do we get here I don't I don't know I think the biggest thing was we've had so many games now we've been seeing the offensive struggles and then today was non-existent offense outside of Bryson do of all people we've been talking about is Bryson Do's been been struggling and needs to be better and we been saying do the Phillies need to platoon second baseman with Bryson do and and Mundo Sosa well Bryson do today is the only reason you had that one run and was the only one that was able to hit the ball and now it's the defense also Bryce Harper with a some really sloppy plays Trey Turner who is known for his sloppy defensive plays but also had his you know there was miscues there was some weird had an off n definitely had an off night everybody had an off night everybody had team though has been winning games because of the fact that they've been picking each other up when one person has an off night somebody else steps up and lately nobody is really stepping up tonight we did see Bryson stot try but we've been seeing this season for the most part it's been by committee that this team's been winning games lately that committee is failing each other the body language not being able to make make the I think it's like The Snowball Effect you don't make the first play you miss on that pass you miss on that catch which then leads to another error or another mistake you miss on that and you're swinging at the first pitch um and then and now is snowballing into more mistakes and more just awful at bats this team right now uh as much as we talk about how contagious the high energy is right now it feels like so is the low energy yeah yeah and uh The Optimist in me keeps telling myself that this is just a downturn in the season and a lot of teams are experiencing uh losing streaks and this and that and I do believe they're I do believe this is temporary still uh but it's at the point now where a little bit of it's starting to creep into my mind like okay um are they more of a um slightly above 500 team than this world beat her best in baseball I still think one of the best you know two or three teams in baseball uh and it's going to take a couple more weeks of this probably two more weeks where if they don't snap out of it the bad thoughts will creep in but right now I'm still pretty pretty positive about uh the direction of this team and the team's going to get better before Tuesday I'm trying so hard to be positive you know I've been trying to spins on everything um and it's I'm running out of positive things to say oh you know I'm not GNA lie I've been trying to put on my positive Patty hat for the longest to look bigger picture I will still say and this is one like the last thing I've got is at least it's happening now and not September but we it's been too long of this like this rut has been continuing for far too long we just got a tweet from somebody four for four Philly fan and he's not alone a lot I've seen a lot of negativity about this team uh in regards to our postgame show pass this team stinks I'll check back in next Sunday after the Mariners sweep Us in Seattle and the lead is only three or four games you can still watch us like it's not our fault feel like we still have a job to do I was more focus on the lead is only going to be three or four games thing than not watching us yeah um but that's how you know a good chunk of the fan base feels right now they're down bad uh and you know since they're down bad I would tell them you did it right after our watch I think there's something going on in the did NCA football come out last uh so it came out officially on Friday athletes get Advanced copies yeah I'm sure they bought $1 copy they've probably had it for two weeks allar break yes yes they probably got it maybe they got it at the All-Star game they were like here Bry and Trey here's um here's 35 copies of NCA football for the Phillies Clubhouse take this back okay they start playing on the team playe you know what those guys they're stealing recruits from each other they're ready to fight I think they're fighting and I don't think it's a fight of like a real fight I mean that's a real that's could be a fight but like no but they're all starting to talk [ __ ] on each other behind each other's backs people going be like this is the dumbest show ever you guys don't even know what you're talking about I mean you know no in reality football beef in the locker room okay bucket getter 2 and5 is saying it did come out on the day of the Home Run Derby and let's be honest have we seen that excitement from the Phillies since the Home Run Derby think about how happy they were the the water jug and Alec bone was all smiles they were laughing and joking even the all okay the allstar game was still that but that was still the next day since that that allstar game excuse me I'm burping I don't know if people could hear in the bike I just want to say I don't think so okay fine he just told on yourself that's fine I should have just said dramatic pause have we seen those same Vibes think about the Twin series we are just actively noticing it but you think about the Minnesota Twin series the Pittsburgh Pirate series have we seen them Good Vibes even when they won gam Paul walked by and was like LSU would dominate all of you in NCA football and they're like oh Paulk something going on with the philes and we have to find out we have to put on our like we have the best working Theory so far we got to Fig like put on our Harriet the Spy or what other spies were there like back in the day The Hardy Boys they can be yeah we can be the Scooby-Doo crew like whatever it takes we got to we have to solve this mystery because for whatever reason it feels like after the allar break we haven't seen the same team yet it's like they turn into a whole new group and it's it's it's translating directly into their play the maybe Philly double assignment you got all the conspiracies does Garrett St need to get the Vibes going do they got to bring out the fog machine and some music and you know get let loose a little bit I wonder what team Austin Hayes would play with he's walking into this blood bath that is an NCA football obsess locker room some non conspiracy theory news for you guys if you're interest fine uh Sir Anthony Dominguez made his Orioles debut today he did oh wow how he do scoreless inning one strikeout two hits oh scoreless with them scoreless two hits two hits apparently also uh may have thrown the a pitch into the net like The netting so that's that sounds about right feel like he was always good for one of those like every two months so you know adrenaline's pumping and all that well I'm glad we figured out the Phillies issue though um so mean I'm just trying to S got to come in and flip a table and break the video game system no more NCA football in the Philly so I think so I mean what else could it be could it be did they accidentally eat the away cheese steaks maybe Jimmy and Ryan I listened to their podcast they said they would sneak some in those chees Stakes would definitely have you feel they not allowed to have them they would have to send like the Clubby over or somebody to sneak them for him something's changed something has changed they have not been the same because even when they were losing games it was hard fought it was the energy was there like lately this team has been very blasé Blas going through the motions defeated and obviously part of that too is you did lose you look at the last what is it now how many games that they've lost it was two against the A's two against the the Pirates two against the Twins and then you lost one today so you've lost seven games in the last 10 games um which I could have just Googled to figure it out a lot quicker but it was much more fun in my head what's changed nobody had a bad breakup since the nobody's been we got JT back not like you lost somebody to an injury was with this big of a okay you let go of wit s Anthony and Christian where they back Vanderbilt maybe he was talking all this [ __ ] like I'm G to start a dynasty in Vanderbilt and I'm going to run this locker room and then he left see it all goes back you know it makes a lot of David do like who who left the clubhouse that triggered this you know what they haven't been the same since London like the off they really haven't been the same since London the offense has not been the same since London I'm not blaming London for that but that seems to be the offensive break point where things just haven't been right since you know some of that was uh injury related JT was still down for a little bit um but yeah their pitching hasn't been the same since that's when we started to see the the you know awful starts by Ranger then Aaron then Zach and every was kind of taking turns of just having some really bad outings the London series was two days off before one day off after then you went to uh Boston then you went down to Baltimore it does feel like well no it actually is the truth of their results play overall has has never recovered has not recovered since then but like how do you get back to that then yeah uh I see Michael Baran Rob Thompson is currently talking so we'll be talking with John Foley in a little bit Michael baran's tweeting uh looks like Rob was talking a little bit about Trey Turner I think defensively uh Michael Baran bad job by you framing who he's talking about uh the Tweet just says I think he's going through a rough time right now not Fielding ground balls as much as throwing on the Run that's Trey right that's a th% Trey the issue is and he also said uh just throw the ball accurately and cover our assignments and we'll be okay okay more cons more more thought Little League stuff more tonight was like literally sloppy tonight was like a maybe the worst umpired first three Innings of a baseball game I've ever seen in my life cannot wait for this dude's scard so bad Kevin long got this by the way is the guy that had a 78% called strike one game um so he is kind of notorious for this a little bit yeah I'm not saying it's the reason they lost and then on top of it the sloppy Fielding which was just like really bad all around is that I hate to say this Trey Turner since his return he came back mid June 10 home runs in the month of July great offensively yes defensively defensively he's he's been bad and when you think about and I'm not saying please don't take this the wrong way me saying like Trey Turner shouldn't be out there but when you think about defensively when Trey was out Bryson St and Mundo Sosa at second base and shortstop was very clean very minimal errors we have been seeing the Phillies consistently it feels like making more and more errors and tonight was like it all coming together what was the final count do you have the box score open Tyler it feel it felt like four or five errors yeah I don't know the errors have been I would well it you know I be that not going to be that high because they don't end up that properly yeah we saw way more it felt like 17 we definitely saw more than that so I don't think Trey is like tre's not our concerned bucket getter 215 you they saying he's the least of our concerns but like defensively those errors are something we're seeing more and more throughout the team like you Bryce making those plays today you don't see that often Bryce even had some like it just is very lackluster just off and like you said Little League plays but so speaking of Bryce was just curious about because it feels like he's in a slump um all right so I'll give you his numbers over the last seven 14 and 28 days it is over the last 17 days he's hitting just 185 with an on base of 185 slugging 440 uh over the last 14 days he's hitting 235 on base 333 slugging 551 and over the last 28 days hitting 214 3 13 on base 476 slugging um so Bryce I would say is in a little bit of a funk yeah he is uh Trey Turner kind of carried you Nick castios had a good month of July schwarber in a little bit of Slum like these and the reason I bring this up is these guys are going to come back like yeah they're gonna find the back of their baseball cards sure so Trey kind of stayed stable ciano's kind of stepped up uh but Harper schwarber JT even is a little slow coming back off defensively look great on a throwout tonight down the third Baseline these guys are going to come back so like this is a temporary hiccup because Bryce Harper is not going to stay cold forever yeah exactly and I want to give a shout out to Ian uh who's in the chat right now who's saying long time listener first time caller welcome wish we had you here on a better Phillies postgame show but when you look at the slumps I think that's what it has to come down to who is most likely to be able to get out of that slump like we don't know what got Phil right we don't know what got the at this point but who is most likely to be able to work themselves out of it um Jose avar Bryson Stott today offensively did feel I mean we did obviously see the great home run we did obviously see the hits that he had and was the only one that was able to contribute okay positive Nick casianos has worked himself out for the most part of his slump that he had in the beginning of the Season uh who else Kyle schwarber another one so it is really interesting that we are getting these slumps but now it's going to be really even more important to see how do they work out of this how soon can they work out of this and when can they get back because if if you get Bryce hitting again for instance on top of Trey's been doing well um Bryson can continue what we saw tonight now that can start to swing things back the other way and start to get the Vibes high and get the team moving in the right direction yeah and Tyler just wrote up on our screen here Rob Thompson did just confirm Austin Hayes will be starting tomorrow night uh versus the Guardians uh and our old friend Carlos Carrasco so not only do we see Ben Lively but then we see Carlos Carrasco and backtack kns Tyler Phillips uh going for the Phillies tomorrow on Austin Hayes night yeah you know the Philly stopper Tyler Phillips yeah well he kind of oddly has been a little bit lately last two starts and then the Sunday Day game is Curry versus our sweet boy Ranger and then The Reeling Yankees are on Deck after the guardian series uh but a little bit looking forward to Austin Hayes uh it looks like at least for the first couple weeks that he's going to be your everyday left fielder so his numbers versus left or versus righties this year uh down a little bit but he has hit them in the past numbers vers lefties exceptional you guys talked about him earlier on the emergency podcast I think he's hitting what like 333 versus lefties this year um so a real big upgrade there uh not many home runs uh but Camden Yards is a difficult place um I think I all over the last three years he'd have 11 or 12 more home runs in Citizens Bank just from a stadium change um so you know a little bit of excitement hopefully some new energy in that Clubhouse tomorrow night because we'll talk to John about it tonight weird Vibes bad bad energy from the team uh and and it translated to defensively just being inept more or less and it's kind of amazing they only allowed three runs considering how bad they were yeah I think we should be definitely fortunate that it wasn't only a a 3-1 game because it was very ugly Trey Turner that was his 12th error on the season as we know Unfortunately they also do not track errors sometimes to correct way we've had some errors that have been later ruled not an error and things like that um just overall very sloppy play for the Phillies it's unfortunate to see how this team is in their own way and dropping games giving up runs and you look at a day like today to be honest they could have played a half decent game defensively and with how little the Guardians offense can score still won the game and that's something the Phillies were doing earlier in the season that's a difference that now they are losing those games they're not getting the lucky bounce they're not getting that lucky play they're not squeezing out winds today is a day you could have actually came in and struggled had a couple errors in the start of the game go down even when they were down 3 0 Bryson th gets that second deck home run build off of that still still lots of baseball left to be played and still won the game because you actually had for your team Orion and Jose and they got out they got in they got out you're you know Christopher Sanchez we said was was solid today your pitchers your Bullpen they did their job if the offense could have given you something you actually still could have won this game and it was the same thing against the twins it was the same thing against the Pirates they're not losing games outside of the A's whooping their butt they're not losing games where almost like a white flag team is is just dominating it's literally the Phillies giving away results here's some errors here our offense is struggling score two runs three runs that's enough to beat us yeah so that's the that's like the frustrating part too because these are still winnable games that they're in if they could just get if you could string together a couple of strong Innings the end one in Minnesota one in Pittsburgh you gave them you gave them yeah and those are Series wins that you know uh you really could have used uh shout out to Bailey Andrews in the chat uh some go on Twitter from time to time so fun in store as we continue to be able to hang out with our uh our die hards and our and all the fun so yeah yeah I hear the uh the noises call uh yeah said oh [ __ ] it's John Foley's music I uh I hear Citizens Bank Park noise in the back ground so I have a feeling John fulley will be joining us momentarily um excited to hear what Rob had to say exactly about Austin Hayes I that is a little bit of a pep in the step tomorrow something different well I like the fact that uh Dave NE braski was mentioning how they've liked Austin Hayes for years and have actually tried to acquire him the last two trade deadlines and have been asked for much more than they actually want to give and he's a good hitter they were saying so many positive things about how he hasn't played it although he hasn't played at all or much this season how he's gotten squeezed out in playing time with the amount of young field young Outfitters that they have and so he's been on their radar which in my opinion just even says a lot about who he is as a player that he's been someone they've been watching closely and are excited to finally be able to land so I'm excited to be able to hear from John when he's ready to have a chance to uh hear what's going on down there at S Bank Park because I know in the chat you got Regal Eagles saying you know the team is playing like garbage I know chip chips and cellos was saying it's time for a team meeting what's up all you guys in the chat VHS Queen is saying some things so yeah I don't know it's just chaos yeah I mean people look the Phillies have been historically a terrible franchise and there's been a lot of losing and a lot of heartbreak over the years and there there have been collaps in the past I do not think we are on the verge of one of those at all uh but let's bring in our own John Foley down from Citizens Bank Park John you're fresh off the Rob Thompson um press conference before we get to the Austin hay stuff uh that was an absolutely disgusting game did Rob Thompson convey uh or look like he just watched a disgusting baseball game all around uh he sure did I think um you know the the move was somber I you know this is still a team with the best record in baseball um but obviously things are not going well well right now and uh you know you could see it and that you know Rob's not a guy that's going to throw his players under the bus but I think um it was clear that uh the effort tonight was disappointing especially defensively early um the umpires did not help he was asked about that and said you know talks to those guys just says can't worry about that um you need to need to keep playing um yeah it was it was a tough one it wasn't great Lively John before Rene hops in about Hayes I want to give him my theory okay I was like this is what we just cooked up John NCA football came out on the Home Run Derby is NCA football uh breaking apart this locker room is there is there beef over recruiting and dynasties uh are they playing NCA football and is it ripping this Phillies team apart your thoughts Jamie I think that's entirely possible uh you know I have a 13-year-old kid and uh he's he's been playing that non-stop for like he hasn't slept it's all done anything he's just he's just been playing for a week straight so you know a lot of these younger guys I would imagine are up until like four in the morning just like him and uh maybe that maybe that shows up on the field okay thought so nailed it I was right Renee guys absolutely Jamie has absolutely been obsessed with this game it's so time I look he's playing the game I come in early sometimes I hope my wife isn't watching just to sneak in a game on the dynasty it's so good he's lit obsessed um but it's fine everything's fine there's a lot of people that are just like Jamie sitting glued to their their computers and or their games excuse me all right so John I before I actually get into Austin Hayes I know Rob doesn't say much and he's not going to single on any players did he say any thoughts about like what's going to be able to be fixed changed done differently to help minimize defensive errors get the offense going was there any talk about kind of next steps because I think the frustrating part I know a lot of people in our chat are saying this is that it feels like these issues haven't been addressed and here we are it's been four straight series now as we're going into the Cleveland Guardians series of staying the same issues offense is struggling and not scoring defense is now having a lot of errors and uncharacteristic uncharacteristic mistakes excuse me anything from Rob regarding like moving forward plans tweaks whatever can be impl mented no I mean that's just really not a style right like he's he's going to protect his guys he's going to say but like behind behind closed doors with the players I would imagine there there are some discussions happening um but he's absolutely just I mean we all know his his sort of attitude and um I think I think players like that he always has his back uh but it can be frustrating at these press conferences where he sort of want answers what's going to happen what's the spark how do we turn this around and there's really not much there it's just you know faith in the guys it's a long season you're going to hit rough patches which you know has a certain amount of Merit to it um 162 games you know we we look at some of these other Seasons where the Phillies won 100 plus games and you know they have they have rough patches of their own um so I it's not crazy that this would happen now I do think it's an it's an opportunity moment the Phillies are going to struggle that would be right before the trade deadline to demonstrate hey maybe some help some more help is needed here and in addition to Hay um but there weren't a lot of clear answers as to you know how do you and really what can you say about some of these errors early on um you know uh he he was asked about Turner in particular and and Turner's defense you you know he called it he called it a rough patch I don't know I don't know how accurate that is we' we've got a pretty large sample size on yeah I was going to say it might just be he is what he is at this point it might just be is what it is and you got to take the good the bad with the good and you know offensively outweighs his erors but it's still frustrating I mean he he can make some incredible plays but uh it's sometimes some of the routine stuff is what gets to him and um you know it's frustrating definitely yeah John brayon hot one of the positives tonight kind of snaps out of it a little bit you know uh buggy ones uh buggy whips one up into the second deck in right field three hit night really encouraging to see out of Bryson stot yeah absolutely I mean Bryson St getting going it would be an absolute game changer for this team right I mean he's been you know sort of making making his way along uh you know in 24ish uh but yeah three hits tonight the Home Run you got to think if you want to lining out today's game Brayson St is it um that he he looked a lot better tonight at the plate now you were obviously you're down at Citizens Bank Park you have the opportunity to see a lot more than we can as we're sitting here in the studio watching whatever the the TV cameras give us access to was we picked up on it seemed like the Philly's body language was just very off today very like even when Bryson do hit that incredible home run it's a 3-1 game still a lot of baseball left to be played and you never really it never really feel like the Phillies mentally were there did you see any of that in person was it maybe just the TV cameras the angling you know what it was the body language and the overall like morale like for you in person around the Phillies you know I I don't think it was just the cameras I I think you could feel it here in the ballpark it was it was the players it was the fans um you know I know we talked we did a lot of these postgame shows here from the ballpark early in the season and we just talked about what a party it was um how Immaculate The Vibes were I would say tonight was sort of the opposite it start it started off really strange right you had you had the defensive misc's you had uh some really terrible home plate umpiring um ask you about that and and you know th those aren't you never want to blame the umpires um you know some early defensive misc should you should be able to overcome that and and score some runs but it did just sort of give the feeling of this wow this maybe isn't their night and and the fans could pick up on it early and uh it uh it wasn't great it wasn't great but you know what it's July 26th let it happen now let's figure it out maybe get some help at the trade deadline and uh let's let's not have a few nights like this uh in October because that's that's when really matter and that's that's when it'll send you home uh so John what did Rob Thompson have to say uh Austin hay starting tomorrow looks like uh from what Dave dumbrowski said earlier to Rob's kind of comments earlier that he's going to be the starting every day left fielder for at least the first little bit I think maybe give Marsh a chance to get healthy a little bit and see what those two give you as a platoon in center field what did Rob have to say yeah so so that's really interesting here with hay because when he was first acquired my immediate thought was okay you've now cobbled together fantastic left fielder between Marsh uh with an 800 plus Ops against um against righties and and Hayes uh really a fantastic hitter against lefties this seems like the perfect fit and then Rob's comments earlier today indicated that actually well we don't really see Hayes as a platoon player we think he's going to be every day out there and left but then also there was a followup question I think uh Tim Kelly from Phil Nation asked well uh so then if Hayes is playing every day and left is going to be a platoon between Marsh and Roos in center and Rob said we don't know that yet I I have I have a lot of people to talk to about that and I think if you if you add all that up it doesn't quite makes sense right like somebody's going to have to sit sometimes um so I I I think it's sort of to be determined where this is really going to shake out I think it might just be based a little bit on on the performance of the actual players on the field and what they do I think it definitely sounds like they plan to maybe give Hayes extended run um out in left field um as an everyday player and and see what he has against both righties and lefties he has very extreme splits in 2024 they're not quite as extreme uh over the course of his career but he definitely hits um he definitely has left he better um it's it's more like 790 Ops to 720 Ops yes his career splits and his 2024 splits are just you only if you looked at only his 2024 splits you would only want him to be a platoon player um but Rob maybe sees something more there or at least wants to give him a chance or like you said Jamie maybe it's a little bit of a half step here while while Mars gets healthier yeah if he's dealing with some stuff I did ask so I I I asked Rob in today's press conference um it was interesting me that wasn't even the first player Off the Bench yeah we talked about that dard six hours on Air Tonight Wilson got the pinch ad bad there yeah I thought that was interesting so I asked Rob about it he said you know just sort of based on his experience when he sees players switch a team and just come in that day that it can be a tough tough job to go up there and pinch hit so he just sort of want to give him a day to acclimate himself and he'll be in the starting lineup tomorrow um and see how he goes from there but yeah that that was surprising that you acquire the guy a lot of these other players who have come from Triple A and whatnot Rob tosses him right in um it did seem like uh he wants he wants Hayes to have sort of like a a clean Start begin of the game sort of like a reliever with a fresh inning right like he wants to come in beginning of the game this is the day you're starting um and see how it goes from there but it'll really be interesting to see how it shakes out because you know uh you you've got three guys there for two spots and if you're not going to have a straight platoon with either of them um gets kind of murky unless unless there's another move that were not aware of that is what's Poss that is what's bizarre because uh Chelsea James who's a uh writer with a national baseball reporter with the Washington Post actually was mentioning earlier the reason why the Phillies did not come or speculation around the reason why the Phillies could not come to a deal for Lane Thomas is because the Nationals were trying to move Lane Thomas on a deal to have him be an everyday player not to be a platoon piece and they were able to land um Austin Hayes under a platoon piece expectation and deal whereas the Nationals wanted more for Lane Thomas to be traded as an everyday piece so if you're GNA trade less for Austin Hayes as a platoon piece but then make him an everyday piece it's just like this is bizarre what's really happening here so I think time will tell of course of what really is to be done uh and the plan is for the Outfield but it does feel like essentially there's more in the works not maybe just with the bullpen maybe there's some more we don't really know about I know in the chat Bailey Andrews is talking about needing another center fielder along with those two bull pin arms I know others are mentioning some uh ideas that I've been seeing throughout this Philly 7's got another conspiracy or crazy thought of could they move Cassy um in TR in in talks for Lis Robert Jr it just leads to a whole lot of speculation if we know Austin Hayes might not be a platoon piece but instead being everyday left fielder what does that mean for the team so lots John going on anything else that you took away from all the different insight and being you know my last thought is just kind of final final pieces that maybe you heard that you want to share with us uh as we wrap up here yeah I guess the the only thing I would want to add as we wrap up here is that um it definitely seems like there are things in the in the works as disatisfied as as fans are I I think you could sense the same thing from Rob Thompson in this press conference I think you know we're all we're all watching the same thing here and uh it's it's a problem it's they're still the team with the best record in baseball um I think I think the Braves are falling behind the Mets tonight the now in second place John so they've built themselves a nice little they've built themselves a nice little lead that will let them figure these kinds of things out it it gives you it doesn't make every night um it doesn't make every game sort of do or die like it's fun it's not yeah it's not it's not a lot of fun on nice like tonight but they do have the luxury of being able to try and figure some things out like play Hayes and left field for a while can he be an everyday guy do you want him to be an everyday day guy um and and you sort of see where you go from there now the trade deadline is the Counterpoint to that the trade deadline is approaching rapidly um so if you want to do some more I know there's a they will add at least one Bullpen piece definitely um yeah possibly two now that Sir Anthony is gone um I my guess had been a a left-hander that probably I think they're going for Tanner Scott I think they're going for a big splash yeah Tanner Scott was my guess for Lefty but once s Anthony's out uh now you start to think well maybe maybe he left the Ed already maybe and if you've gone sort of small on the Outfield maybe that means they're going to go big uh in the bullpen so we'll see what happens there either we Scot um I don't know about Mason Miller in his in his broken non-throwing hand um oh go I wouldn't I wouldn't say it's out of the question because you did just ship out a right-handed reliever and sort of the the theory behind that was well um as for as much as he's done for this Phillies team right now and probably for the rest of the season you're not really going to rely on him on in high leverage situations and it's probably not going to be helpful in the postseason despite some past postseason success um so if sanon's gone out now it sort of feels like you need left-hander and right-hander so I think they get two I think they get two I think you know saving the prospects John I think that was a big deal to get Haze in here for not giving up prospects so I think that allows you to go attack the bullpen through Pro ects and uh you know I think they make one Splash move maybe one type of like low-level Insurance type of move um but we'll see what happens were any names coming up tonight in the Press Box or did anybody ask Rob about it he's not really the guy to ask about trades but uh did it come up at all yeah Thompson not not so much the guy who's who's gon toh talk traits um but you know I think fans are familiar with all the names that are out there and uh you do I would I would be surprised actually at this point going relatively small with a marginal move in the Outfield and preserving all your prospects sort of preserving all your ammo for a possible trade for one or two relievers um it would be really surprising if the if the team with the best record in baseball that's sort of struggling right now and has a re a couple really clear sort of flawed areas it would be very surprising to me if they didn't do something significant um and it it didn't you know it it hasn't materialized in the Outfield with that first move um you know nothing that they've done honestly precludes them for going after uh Luis Robert Jr uh you know and nothing that they've done precludes them from going after Mason Miller uh or Tanner Scott so I reading between the lines I would I would expect something bigger than what we've seen so far and honestly just just the the discussion about the Outfield is just as presently constituted it doesn't make it ton of sense to me if if Hayes is going to play right you have three players you have Hayes and you have roas uh you have Hayes roas and uh Marsh and and brand Mars or yeah maybe they come out left field with something with Nick yeah but you've got you've got three guys for two spots that indicates that there's going to be some sort of platoon I so it's interesting I I would mov or someone's getting moved or or they're not done yet like things were precursor to uh next move um so it's it's it's really intriguing what they're what they're going to do here in these next few days leading up to our uh big live trade deadline show I think oh John uh Billy Murphy's Saloon came in tonight yeah woo good stuff food was I'm rocking one of their awesome shirts uh the food was phenomenal so we're really looking forward to Tuesday 5 to seven at Billy Murphy Saloon out in East Falls uh should be a great one I I kind of with you I think two moves are coming we'll see what happens but the Phillies are definitely going to get better by Tuesday uh John hopefully they can take the series hopefully they can win Saturday and Sunday down there you know it's not impossible they've it's been done before for um we'll see if Tyler Phillips can be the Philly stopper tomorrow versus old friend Carlos Carrasco hey he's been tun doing a pretty good job so far um Philips so like yeah let's see if he can can keep that rolling and um yeah would be it'd be great to to pull out these these next two win of series because uh it's been a few series4 years it's been yeah yeah no I fact check that 84 years it's been play last one the series so and hey and after Cleveland it's not getting any easier you got the Yankees coming to town you got West Coast trip with the Dodgers the Yanke might be a slum Buster right now so that could be cool Fair yeah Fair Point at the trade deadline last season would they have would that have made a difference in the NLCS it's an impossible question to answer but it couldn't have hurt couldn't have hurt I mean everybody
