good morning DJ and PK it's 975 The Zone welcome in it's finally game day it's Thursday it's here it's the UT and Southern Utah probably be a blowout but we don't care it'll be a football game we'll get a chance to see how healthy cam Rising looks we get to see a chance to see how healthy brand keithy looks you know do they look explosive and dynamic is Cam trying to run is he trying to avoid hits uh you know all that kind of stuff and then presumably they blow this open and we get to see Isaac Wilson and uh you know see what he can do as a true freshman so we also get to see a defense that should be dominant Junior tauna should be making a lot of plays this year here's Junior tuna with the media Junior how you feeling getting ready to go and hit some people man I'm excited uh man really really just can't wait till Thursday uh man I was just telling others that don't feel nervous at all if anything you just excited to see how how we're going to start this season and it's going to be great so can't wait to see Cam and everyone out there it's going to be I feel it's gonna be like just like all time so I'm excited you mentioned cam talk about healthy guys Frank ke's stepping back out there as well what's that like man it like why I said it'll be like all times I mean I can't wait to hear Bad Moon Rising r at ryes that's going to be nostalgic you know when you hear that you know it's a good time so um it's awesome just to see them out there so man I'm honestly just excited so you guys going to come see it you and cam share something you both kind of rose up out of that San Diego State game unexpected is that why you feel so connected with him man that too and man when I was a freshman coming in he man he kind of he he was my friend basically I mean obviously we're all friends but I mean yeah we all we're all friends that's the bottom one but he he took that part to to come out reach out to me and you know and I I look up to him a lot for that just because you know I was a younger I wasn't knowing I mean I already knew he was going to be someone just the way I was on scouting going against him he was going to be someone but he's he's a special friend special guy how has it made your defense better competing against this offense man it's it's freaking awesome the the old line and man they're going to be great and then man just overall offense they look so confident out there and I can't wait to see them perform just cuz they deserve they deserve to have that Junior last year there was a little bit of Heth problems for you yourself yeah how how nice is it to just go into the season knowing that you're healthy and ready to go man it's it's a blessing man uh can't it just help me reflect that I can't take anything for granted uh makes you makes me give more out there when I'm out on the field and uh just honestly bless and wouldn't want anyone to be in that situation but you know card puts us in those situations and you never know what you're going to see at the end so you just got to keep going you mentioned bad mood rising and how excited you are to hear that if Junior tuna could have a theme song what would it be Frick I'd probably say uh come and get your love by by uh for that one that one band I forgot one band yeah that one band I I know it I just see it come get you love yeah I be that one y Cam's leadership is very important to this team obviously but having him back out on the field you know what does it mean for the team overall now that he's fully healthy man uh having him out on the field it's it's like an instant confidence booster ifence everyone elevates um just because of his leadership and so having him out on the field is a big key into how everyone wants to play just cuz he has that Swagger and you guys heard a lot he has that Swagger and he really does it's just natural I don't know what it is but you know when you got it you know it makes you want to swing harder and just fight for your brother we're pretty familiar with the defensive tackle room and the defensive line overall but who are some of the the new faces young faces that you're excited to see take on Thursday man uh Dallas and uh Jonah Jonah so Dallas just has a natural pass R Us man he's super gifted talented same thing with Jonah Jon Jonah is a little wider but you know once he puts on that weight um man I guess the D tackles are in great hands we we had great rotation and so can't wait to see them out there on the field and honestly just our our whole room were well connected and so man I can't wait to get after the quarterbacks this year there's Junior tuna now here's one of the guys everybody wants to see Brant keithy is he being back to being the Brant keithy we saw two years ago because he missed a season and a half of football here's Brant keithy Utah tight end with the media what's the excitement level for you guys now for you and and uh cam coming in it feels good I'm just ready it's been a long fall Camp so uh just knocking off the rust but I feel really good and just waiting for Thursday what are you looking forward to most on Thursday just running out it'll feel good probably be a little nervous but um once the first snap goes away I'll feel good and just right at home have you and cam talked about how long it's been since you guys have actually played in ryes I mean it's been about a year it's been 2 years two years two years yeah it's been a long time but um it's gone by fast and I'm just looking forward to getting back on the field I asked coach Whit just kind of about how awesome is it to have a healthy Frank keithy returning and he said that allows the team to kind of be a little more at ease especially with how stacked the tight end room is how are you feeling how are is the team feeling I mean man you're healthy yeah I feel good run out there feel fast uh feel strong and just happy to be back out there and the team feels good and just waiting to play Southern Utah on Thursday what is your assessment of the tight end room overall we have a lot of talent a lot of guys that can do different things and I think that'll show it on Thursday and then just game after game it'll be awesome to see how team's Personnel against us outside of a win I mean what what do you consider success on on Thursday just playing uh all around football honestly and scoring a lot of points um making sure their offense doesn't score and just getting everybody playing time cuz uh after this we don't really play a lot of teams that we can afford to do that so playing against Southern Utah just getting everybody on the field and getting some playing time what have you seen from a guy like Caleb loner you know yeah he's a fast learner uh picked up never played football before and it's going to be awesome seeing on Thursday making some plays what did you miss most honestly just being out here um the games are fun everything but just being out here every single day and if you miss a practice it kind of sucks and kind of brings you down but every sing single day that I'm out here being able to compete at the highest level it feels great characterize this offense what we're going to see on the field come Thursday it's going to be awesome I don't think we're going to be running as much but uh it's good for me but um no it's awesome I think all around we have so many players around and um a lot of people are going to getting the ball and it's going to be interesting to see how that goes and um yeah it's going to be fun with the amount of football that you've played do you feel like the game has like really really slowed down for you it kind of feels like high school a little bit but um I mean I haven't played in two years so it's going to be a little different going out and playing a live game I played um just some thud and not no no really tackle so it's going to be fun being out there get tackled a little bit it's going to feel good getting hit and um just excited to get after this game and go into the next more coach Whit did mention that he gave you like a practice off here and there just so you do feel healthy and good how much has that helped you um but CU I know you obviously want to lock in and just go yeah uh I got him during fall camp but now every single day I got to every single day and it feels good got my legs under me and um I feel just right going into Thursday dude what people want to know are you going to take a Jet Sweep hand off this season we'll see you on Thursday oh boy there's Bri keithy now here's the quarterback cam Rising cam it's game week how you feeling excited just wish it wish it could be here already cam this we've heard a lot about this offense I mean you obviously get a firstand look of it what what do you you seeing about this offense maybe compared to years past that you've had uh just having depth having multiple guys that can go in and make big plays um when you have that usually it's going to just make sure you make you be able to run any type of play you want at any time so just having that ability is going to be special what are you looking forward to most just getting back on the field honestly just that first snap first time saying set go and and getting the ball right there um people are talking about rice cycle Stadium being the hardest in the Big 12 to play in and those guys are on your side side I know we talked about it over and over again but heading into this how excited you are to see the mus oh I'm I'm always ecstatic to see the mus they do a great job just making sure they're coming out making noise and anytime you got a crowd like that it's just going to make the game that much more enjoyable that much louder and just it's a great atmosphere to be a part of what things are you sort of looking to do to just throw yourself back into game action it's been so long but is there a step by-step process that you're wanting to take to like set go white 80 white 80 set go that's about it that's all I need got to ask you how you feeling excited just uh just Ching at the bit to get back out there Alex Smith is obviously being honored for one of the first members of the Ring of Honor I'm curious you know he went through an extensive leg injury you know you're you rehabed from your for some for such a long time was there any communication between you guys as you were going throughout your rehab process uh no I haven't I haven't talked to him I know his leg was a lot more complicated than mine I'm not I'm not even going to act like it's remotely close yeah but yeah I I I just looked at his story and just have have a tremendous amount of respect um knowing that he could get back and and and still do everything that he he's been able to I knew that I could do it just just taking that and seeing that be done right but not not the same don't don't don't me on that say oh my god do you have a a pitch count that you want to play and then maybe see some of your backups get into the game what satisfies you as far as playing time in this game um I I don't like to focus on that we got to go out there and and and score a lot of points in order for that to happen so we got to be focused on what we need to handle first and then if we can get everybody in that would be great but but that's not our Focus the decision process behind you know not running as much or or being more safe with the football in your body I guess how I guess when you're on the field are you approaching that this season and compared to years's past go out there and play some football that's about it coach Whit uh complimented the fact that because you are healthy the team Vibe is great because we're going into it with Cam Rising under Center um what does that mean to you knowing that man you're a Vibe on this team um it's awesome I I love this team and and just to be a a small part of it and and have that much respect from coach Whit is is unreal I love coach Whit that's that's the guy a guy I always dreamed about playing for and and yeah just to to have him say that is special for sure cam speaking speaking of Vibes would you say the offense is hot to go yeah we're that's a song Hot to go H stupid stupid we are hot to go for sure a weird song to bring just one more did you and bran U share any thoughts about this game um not yet we we've uh we kind of just talked about what it's going to be like to get back on the field but we're just we're just ready for it all right there are the youths they play tonight BYU gets going Saturday night Jay Hill U defensive coordinator meeting with the media here's Jay safe to say then you're probably ready for a game after this grind of the past month you know what we're tired of hitting each other um tired of going against our own offense we're excited about playing somebody new um and uh this is a good opponent so we're excited for this game you got familiarity with Southern Illinois from your time of Weaver just one time you know Nick Hill was the head coach there at that point I I have tons of respect for him I think he's a great play caller I think he does a phenomenal job with his program I thought they were tough then they showed the same toughness and tenacity last year on film um and he's had a lot of really good teams there so uh they've got our full attention for sure how did Tanner wall uh basically win the starting free safties consistency um I like the whole group but um Tanner's been super consistent he shows up every day had a great summer and uh yeah he's graded out well so I'm excited to watch him play how how close is Ephraim AATA to being ready to play or contribute early on well ephraim's going to contribute and he's going to be a great player in this program for a long time um and this goes for a lot of the Freshman you're going to see those guys playing um and how much they play is going to be dependent upon how fast they pick up just the speed and physicality of the you know the P4 game but um we got a lot of young guys that I see their progression um coming along and you'll see more and more of them as they get older in the program on that safety step chart you got a lot of experience at strong safety and then very little outside of Tanner wall free safety will they be interchangeable or they are I mean I I feel comfortable we like I I've said this before we've got six guys that have started games in that room we got three really talented freshmen to to join to them um really there's probably 10 guys that we could play and win with but um yeah we'll see how they play and how they continue to earn more reps in the games to come this aren't naming a quarterback kind of like you guys AR does that help or hurt you guys at all n it doesn't really matter I think we have a good idea of the scheme that they'll play we've studied both quarterbacks and the Reps that they've had either at Southern Illinois or the other programs that they've been at so we've tried to study them and try to you know just uh identify what we think that they will do with those skill sets in their offense just stylistically what do they look like to you athletic um I think they both have good arms um I know what Nick Hills played with at quarterback over the last four or five years and they're competitive tough guys that usually do a good job of taking care of the football and we would expect nothing less from these guys how was Logan loule evolved since his days at Weber and now being a factor that o spot well I love coaching him um he was a great kid to recruit he came in right away and showed promise in his days at Weber and then the times he did play I thought he played really good and then when I get down to BYU he's become exactly what we hoped he would be he's physical does things right um and he's another one I think we'll have a really good year this year it's kind of a a deep cut question but when school starts are you expecting any players that didn't matriculate in for fall camp like tuy and AA do you expect them to en we're still hoping for one right now um and I I don't think it's fair to them yet who it is but we're still hoping to get one at the start of school all right there are some youths and cougars we're going to take a break when we come back John talty with a new book on exactly how much money is changing the game of college football and where it goes in the next 5 to 10 years John is next DJ and PK we're joined Now by John TTY national college football writer for 247 Sports and author of the new book the price John good morning hey guys appreciate you having me on thanks for coming on I assume it took very a very short amount of time to come up with the title of this except I know sometimes book companies have whole departments that do that kind of stuff but this seems right to the point the price it takes a lot of money to compete in college football but is this just about the money or is the price about other things as well yeah no I love the title um and if your listeners haven't looked at it yet I love the the cover too it's I think it really pops and it's like the perfect book to like have on a bookshelf or somewhere because of the way that it looks but yeah it's a combination of the two it's obviously a play on all the money that's infiltrated the sport whether that's nil which I'm sure will talk about but also you know all the TV money which I know is very relevant to your audience with how the Pack 12 imploded um but it's a play on as well the the price that everyone within this world is paying right now it's a toll you know and I think whether it's the coaches the ads the administrators the players there's a lot of pressure and stress on these people because of just the unregulated nature of college football right now there's just a lot that you can benefit from but there's a lot of headaches that you have to deal with right now that you weren't dealing with a few years ago so there's just a lot happening within college football especially the last couple of years and that's really what we wanted to document in this book is just kind of how people at every level are trying to handle this and survive in this world I would think when you undertake a project like you did that as you're going through it there would be things that you would discover and learn and maybe even to the point of surprise maybe not I'm wondering what are what were those things yeah I think they happened throughout you know I think whether it was you the book initially started actually with the famous Nick sa and Jimbo Fisher war of words and it was kind of like what could possibly be happening within college football that these two guys who know each other pretty well and one a national championship together at LSU would be willing to just lob bombs at each other so that's where it started and for me was very important for us to explain kind of how we got to that moment and what was happening behind the scenes between those two guys and I think there some revealing details about how Nick sain conducted business down in LSU that that made Jimbo Fischer think he was a hypocrite in his comments about how A&M bought every player but there's a lot down the way I mean I think one of the ones that you we detail pretty heavily in the book was was Arizona um and kind of their rise under Jed fish but we get into a lot of how the Pack 12 imploded and I think just some of the details we uncovered of just all the mistakes that were made along the way the outrageous demands the the last minute efforts to save the conference you know I don't know if it was surprising but it was certainly revealing to me and I think that people who are interested in you know how did this conference that was around for I think 108 109 years implode the way it did I think will be you know certainly enlightened by the details that we uncovered that you know I haven't seen anywhere else well I believe there were a bunch of mistakes made and I have no doubt you can find a bunch more mistakes and they mess it up left and right the big 12 and the ACC went down different paths the Big 12 didn't start a network the Pack 12 did the AC started a network with a partner and the Pack 12 didn't they're getting pulled apart and relieved of their uh it hasn't happened yet with the ACC but it looks like it's going to relieved of their most powerful Brands when it comes back to the price the expression money loves money isn't that what is changing college football yeah I mean we have a a quote I think it was from uh Bobby Robbins who's the Arizona president who just talks about how you the pursuit of that you know kind of Almighty dollar is corrosive and I think that's been a huge part of what we've seen within college sports you know I go back to you know the Teddy Teddy Roosevelt quote uh comparison is the thief of joy and I come back to that a lot because I think that's it's not that people aren't making a lot of money it's that they see someone else making more money than them and that gets them upset and we saw that with the Pack 12 uh and it's you know some of this has been reported already but they wanted Big 10 money uh guess what they weren't worth Big 10 money but that they wanted that number not because uh they deserved it because that's what they saw and now you're seeing in the ACC Florida State Clemson it's not that they're not making a lot of money it's that they see the SEC and Big 10 making more and they want that same level so that's a huge part of why we are where we are within college football right now and to your point I think maybe one of the most surprising things of the last decade or so is that the Big 12 is in the position that it's in I mean I can think back to numerous times now where where it felt like all right if we're going to lose a power five conference it's probably going to be the the Big 12 whether it was you know losing Missouri and Texas A&M and Colorado whether it was you know almost losing Texas and Oklahoma a few years back with the Pack 12 then ultimately losing them to the SEC it just always felt like big 12 was the vulnerable conference because they didn't have the TV network they didn't have as much money but here they are looking pretty solid that doesn't mean they're going to last forever things happen fast as everybody knows um certainly the ACC knows that now but I just kind of find it interesting that what has always felt like kind of number five in the power rankings is now number three and feels you know at least semi secure compared to you know the ACC with you the farest State and Clemson situation looming over its head when you say these programs and schools and conferences wanted more money they're already making money but they want more I'm wondering did they feel for the very Act of being able to survive that it wasn't necessarily A want it was more of a need because you hear of stuff with all the stuff floating around that eventually some formation however it looks like of the Big 10 and SEC will break off and they'll be on the other side of the line and all these other conferences or schools will be almost forgotten on the wrong side of the line so the pressure to get it created a unrealistic expectation of needing versus wanting sure no I I don't disagree with that we write about that quite a bit in the book uh about that situation looming over this sport I think you've seen especially in the last let's say six months or so the SEC and Big 10 you know cozying up a lot more which I think scares a lot of people that are not in those conferences because you know I think each one of them could probably go on their own but the combined power of the SEC and the Big 10 with all the valuable properties that they have could break off and do its own thing and people believe that that those Wheels have been in motion and so that is certainly a concern um and yeah you want to be uh you want to be in that club and one of the the schools that we focus on in this book is Maryland which is in the club uh right now in the Big 10 but you know will they always be in the club would they make a top 40 cut off I don't know if they would and that's something that I talked very openly with their head coach Michael Boxley and their ad Damon Evans is how do you make sure that you're in that club that if you know they cut cut the line are you in or you out because nobody wants to be left out especially if you're in that power four level right now so I think you make a great point I do think people feel like we got to get as much as we can to prepare uh if that day comes down the line and you know we'll see we'll see whether it comes it doesn't feel like it's necessarily imminent part of that's because the TV contracts are you know wrapped up I think into for a lot of them into to the early 2030s but it's that's going to continue to be a situation people are monitoring and every time the SEC and the Big 10 make a move together there are other conferences that are concerned what that means you know big picture long-term wise so Ohio State Michigan Alabama and LSU these other big brands in the Big 10 SEC it seems like there's two places for them to get more money which seems inevitable that these big Brands want more money one less money or no money for Purdue and Vanderbilt and anybody else who isn't a power brand and letting these investment funds with the uh the the big big money The Venture capitalists letting them buy 10% Like the NFL is going to do or more like other leagues do are those two things going to happen are we going to have people who don't care at all about sports who only care about the money get their nose in Under the Tent yeah I think both of those things definitely have a likelihood you know I think you know be careful what you wish for right I'll start with the Venture Capital private Equity part of it you know I think what's amazing about college sports is that for as much money that it generates all the revenue that we see coming in they've never been run like actual businesses right they're not actually trying to get their top return on investment in some of these different things we've seen all the Olympic sports are essentially money losers there's a lot of things within athletic departments tutoring and dieticians and stuff that don't necessarily generate any money and so you know it's a little bit of you're let the fox into the hen house if you bring private Equity into to it and they start wanting it to be run like an actual business and wanting to see a certain return on investment every year there's going to be Cuts there's going to be changes to that model that are going to have to happen to your other point you know in the book we talked to former NCA president Mark Emer and he brought up that exact example where you know right now it's the bigger boys the bigger conferences plucking the top brands uh away from these other conferences the secc getting Texas and Oklahoma P 12 getting USC and Oregon and Washington and every body's happy right now in those conferences but at what point do the Alabama and Georgia and OSU say why am I getting the same cut as Vanderbilt as Mississippi State we've seen it happen now in the Pack 12 USC wanted a bigger cut and didn't get it we're seeing it right now in the ACC where Florida State and Clemson want a bigger cut and right now the Big 10 in SEC can kind of laugh at those situations but why wouldn't we think that would eventually come home for them as well so I think that's something that you know is probably if you're a Purdue like you mentioned you're a little concerned about right now you're happy you're glad that you're getting the full cut but uh you always have to be a little worried that one day Ohio State of Michigan say actually you're getting 70% moving forward so we get a little extra because we generate so much more interest and value for the conference when it comes to TV rights DJ and PK proudly presented by our title sponsor Black Desert Resort Utah's Premier Golf Resort coming up next Riley Jensen talking college football with PK and I DJ and PK it's 975 The Zone we are joined right now by Roy Jensen College football expert and mental performance Coach Riley good morning hey what's happening fellas college football is kicking off what are you going to be looking for in games everybody all the the local teams here Utah BYU Utah State the three full subdivision teams are all playing money games at home they all ought to win they all to win comfortably so let's start with the youths what do you want to see in that game assuming the final score is you know sided and decisive the way money games are supposed to be they aren't always but the way they're supposed to be what are you looking for what do you want to see what are you checking out in this game um I'm I'm really looking at at at keii I'm looking at cam Rising I'm looking at some of these guys that have been injured to look for um them to kind of knock some rust off and hopefully you know by the end of the second quarter couple of drives that just feel really really efficient when it comes to the University of Utah because you know everybody always just goes oh yeah well he had an ACL oh yeah you know this guy had a concussion it's it's not that easy to come back from and it takes a couple of hits and it takes a couple of things mentally for you to be able to shake that off and feel like okay I'm ready to go so I'm looking I'm looking for them to be able to to kind of knock some of the cobwebs off and and be able to be efficient in their offense in the first game against Southern Utah yeah that's all this game is about it's about keithy and rising and then cheering for Alex Smith other than that uh move on to the next one true true I mean I mean is is there anything in football besides quarterbacks PK I mean you know not in this situation uh because of him being out and keithy being out almost two years in terms of action because he he was in the first conference game two years back and then that's it and get it over with and everybody have a good time and then move on my thought for you is we're talking about expectations for the youths it's either playoff or it's not that's the only thing if it's playoff they've had a successful season they'll see what they do if they get there and what they do and if they don't make it no matter what the circumstances it's a bitter disappointment simple as that no I I think you're right and I think that's the sign of a good program I mean when I've talked to my friends and when I've talked to you know young players that participated in my old Camp Mountain West Elite and they played it at P5 schools P4 schools now I guess is what we're calling them um if you don't go to to the playoffs or to to compete for some sort of national championship or one of the one of the big four bowl games those teams don't feel they feel like the season was a disaster and I I think that's a compliment to the program that Kyle's built I think that's a compliment to the program that is here at the University of Utah is there are high expectations and I really do feel like if they if they don't win the conference or go to the playoffs like you're talking about it will be there there'll be a lot of people that are disappointed but I mean pressure is a privilege that's kind of a fun that's kind of the fun part about a team like this if you were offered the UTS or the field in the Big 12 who would you take I would take the youth I think they have a tough one right away at Oklahoma State and then I just think I this could be perception and I know that the Big 12 is a step up clearly from the Mountain West or from you know any of the group of five conferences but it's not a Step Up um from the Pack 12 and the way that the University of Utah plays is not typical Pack 12 football this is power football and I don't the Pack 12 the Big 12 I don't get the impression that they're the real physical teams and I think there's going to be teams in this conference that that really have some difficulty with with kind of the power the defense and the physicality of of the University Utah football by wayu doesn't announce it I think it'll be rett's laugh um what are you looking to see and how important is it whoever it might be that they get out there and show well well I think it's important whenever you're a quarterback in your first game you want to you want to feel like you show well and I don't know why when I was playing if I if I didn't play well against the what would be a onea school I know we don't call it that now but if I didn't if I wasn't really sharp and if I didn't play well I felt I felt embarrassed I didn't I I didn't feel good about the way that I was playing of course you know you win the game and you get through it but if you didn't feel like you were sharp it doesn't feel good I think we'll see both quarterbacks I think redl will start but I think both of them want to show well and and show what they're capable of and show that they're capable of putting their team in the end zone I mean that's that's the bottom line right and the way that the offense played last year um you know the lack of sacks last year from the defense I think those are the two things that you're looking for with BYU you want you want BYU to be sharp offensively you want you want to see that they can run the ball you want the quarterbacks to be sharp and then you really want to see this team and last year was not typical of Jay Hill teams you really want to see this BYU team get after quarterbacks and really get get to the quarterback when they get a chance when you talk to people and I know that because of your age you know coaches and have conversations with them are we going to be talking about somebody at the end of the season a big star who we're not talking about now is somebody going to emerge anywhere in the state I don't care is there some player you're looking at and and the rest of us are all sleeping on them well I don't know if they I don't I don't know who's sleeping on this guy because I think we all think he's pretty good but the defensive tackle for the University of Utah He's the first one that comes to my to my head is is Keanu tanasa yeah I mean he's made huge strides since last season he's quick he's physical he's Relentless he he should have a great season and from what I'm hearing through the Great Vine he's one of the best leaders that the University of Utah has and I think you're just going to see tianu tanasa as like a household name one of those big- time names on the defensive line from the University of Utah when we go forward so I don't know I don't know that I'm picking something that's like really out there um I also think that um uh and I forget his first name is it is it keano Hill that changed from wide receiver to tight air yes I think I think he's someone that we need to keep our eye on because from what I'm hearing he has like not lost his speed with the size that he has now so he's put on 20 to 25 pounds and he hasn't lost his speed now does that translate to being able to block and and be able to catch the ball I don't know but I'm I'm not sure that you always have to be a tight end that that is a great blocker anymore I think I think there's a place in college football for someone who can be a great tight end who really is just a matchup nightmare where you know a linebacker is too slow to cover him and a safety is too small to hang with him and so th that's those are the two matchups that I think or the two players that I think might really stick out um to the listeners out there that are thinking about their teams how cool and unusual is that Riley dropping a pair of Kos they have the same first name that's all you need to know that is weird o right there that's I mean that's how I memorized it I mean you know the CTE and some of the things that I have trouble with if I if I don't have like something like that to remember it's really hard for me to do that kind of stuff and plus tasu every time he sees me he says hello well that's because that's because I I think great recognized great I don't know where I got that from but I think great recognized great he's a very personable young man isn't he yes I mean for I've never met him but everything that I hear about this guy and I've heard from five or six different sources about just what what a great person this guy is yeah but the cool part is he's a great football player too I mean uh you know when you could do both both of those that's hard he's an emerging star once tuna leaves he'll be the next household name along the defensive line no question that no question that is what is it's looking like because I believe he's just a sophomore although who knows with the NCA restoring eligibility four years later who knows what what that means but I think that's what is point at this point you can play like seven eight years and collect nil there's there's some fun things going on and retire right and then retire retire as a 25y old you know yeah we're gonna have College football guys announcing their retirement right it used to be it used to be that a 25y old was a guy that was a returned missionary with a gray shirt and a red shirt now it's that you just got a lot of Eligibility back and you were paid nil for a few years and so yeah I made a statement uh with Scotty we were talking about Boise or the field now he hates Boise so he took the field but I'm taking Boise every time right I don't see how you don't I mean last year was a down year for them the coach got fired and what happened I believe they won the league didn't they I I think they did yeah did so and they've got an American fort quarterback no less who who by the way is a really fun athlete to watch he's got a little brother that plays wide receiver at Lehigh and he is he's a really fun quarterback to watch and I don't know it's if it's because I was a six- foot quarterback but I just I'd love to see smaller guys go and compete and battle and actually win some spots it'll be fun to watch him I'll be cheering I'll I'll I'll I'll be cheered for Matson up there at boyy state for sure this year your Aggie have an interm coach who had to introduce himself to the offense CU why would they know the brand new defensive coordinator and they've got I think plenty of difficulty built into that schedule USC and Utah back toback so a one and two start seems highly likely and Washington State and Boise State further down the road what are you expecting out of your Aggies what's the best case and worst case number for them well so when you were gone I think you were sick for a couple days and and and PK and I talked a little bit about this like it is stacked against them and I think I think there's two things that can happen one is that they pull together and it becomes us against the world or it really really fractures into some really difficult situations I just don't think that schedule I mean you're talking about University of Utah USC boisee State and Washington State on the schedule I mean that just doesn't I mean that's just a hard hard thing to overcome I think if you're Utah State best case scenario is you get to six wins and you get to go to a bowl game worst case scenario is this thing falls apart because the hard part about this is coaches and players don't have any stability right now I mean you have an interim coach you don't know that you're going to be the next head coach you don't know that there's not people being interviewed at every single game that you coach this year and I think it's just a really really difficult situation because you know these coaches have to they have to reach out and they have to network and yeah it's nice to have a job for the season but if all of a sudden like things go really bad in conference and they know they're not going to be bow eligible those last those last five four games of the year they're just going to be on the phone looking for jobs they're not really going to be as concerned about coaching and developing and all those things if if they're not in a good spot so I it's hard for me to predict a really successful season I'm hoping for it I'm hoping these players can Galvanize together but man it just seems like a lot to overcome yeah that that's an excellent point I was thinking about that too if this thing gets South it's sort of going to be like every man for himself at that point and that's a that's a worst case scenario you can't win college football if you're playing for yourself right ask ask any former college football player that's Had a Bad season and guys started being individuals I mean it it it goes It goes south fast and in a competitive world with a lot of egos you get the defense pitted against the offense you get individuals pitted against individuals and then you have coaches with instability I mean it's a recipe for disaster so I'm hoping for the best it doesn't if if it doesn't go well I I I don't know that you can blame the team or the coaches it's just a hard situation it's a really hard situation our question for uh you fans right now best case worst case you want to put numbers on it or you're with PK just just get to the playoffs I don't even care if you're 12 and 0 11 And1 10 and two just get to the playoffs I don't I don't care about the record you know I think best case scenario is you get to the playoffs I think worst case scenario is you don't get to the playoffs like it's really true I mean you you talk to to guys that have played for Oklahoma State you talk to people that played for LSU you talk to people that have played for Florida like if they're not in a big bowl game that has a lot of attention mean shoot we saw last year with Georgia and Florida State people were freaking they were done they're like we're not in the playoff get the freak out of here go no you're right yeah just wholesale passing the bull games you got that was still an orange that was still an orange bll right like y get the freak out of here that's what they said and of course they were talking about leaving Miami and going down to the keys right I mean GTFO let's [Laughter] go so I don't know it's it's an interesting thing that's going on in college football and because of nil and the transfers it's I do I my heart and I know nobody nobody's heart goes out the coaches but it is really hard to like build team in this in this new world and it it will take a different type of Coach to be able to handle and massage these new situations um yeah and we've seen that with coaches and I've seen it really in basketball too coaches and football with saving coaches are like yeah I'm out I'm not doing this yeah so but but the other team you're playing has the same problem so that part's a wash I think it's more does the individual want to do it I mean it may be hard for you to build that team but the same for the whoever's across the sideline I think it's what coaches are willing to do I mean right now you you literally have to recruit and pay players every year because they're all on onee contracts and say hey if you don't treat me right get me the freak out of [Laughter] here he laughs at his own to stay on the same theme that we've been talking about it's like hey man if you don't pay if you're not treating me like how I feel I need to be treated and I think that's the hard part about college is there's like there's no like contracts you know what I mean like at least with a pro you got a fouryear you know you got a three-year deal a fourth year option where they can't they can't really leave right now it's like hey man I don't like you you don't like me I'm out you know and uh that's hard that's hard to build a team and that's where I think it's different right now than pro football is that there's not any um there's not any structure to to how the payments happen yeah well if there is Trent Williams is over there on the sideline like uh restructure how the payments happen or I'm not playing right well you know guys I'm I'm behind the scenes on a lot of different things like there's even volleyball girls that are going to be like seniors in different programs that are like yeah we're yeah maybe we won't get paid but we want to restructure so that we we only have to practice this many times a week that we only have to do that so they're even like making demands in different ways that way like hey if you want me to come back for my senior year I get Mondays off you know and and these coaches have to deal with it and they have to figure it out so then you have coaches like Randy Ray they're like forget this I'm out of here right and I'm not I'm not going to deal with this or or you have coaches that are like yeah dude I'll do this I can deal with this I'll freaking figure out a way to pay them I'll figure out a way to do this because they're because they're younger and they're hungry but at a certain point there's certain coaches that have been doing it a certain way they're not willing to do that there's right Jensen coming up next what is trending the headlines are on the way
