hard work that we've put in as a team over the last few years um it's it's paying off slowly um I think everybody knew that I had the level to be able to play at this level but um didn't quite show it but luckily this summer I have you've played Novak tough in the past what's what's the biggest challenge in facing a player like him um just the big points are he steps up um you know he is one of the greatest of all time so um you know he's always going to bring it on those big points and and I think last two times I played him the big the big moments a little bit got got a little bit ahead of me so um hopefully this time's different good luck thank you just waiting now for Novak jokovic Novak how would you describe your level through the first two matches and how do you feel physically yeah first couple matches Under The Roof and you know the atmosphere is electric you know the the crowd's energy is amazing you know they get into it support 10 as they support a players so you know it's it's as a as a player obviously it's it's a great pleasure to be to be on the court and feel that feel that atmosphere thanks very much good luck [Music] New York here we go please welcome the players inside the Billy Jean King national tennis center here in New York we're into the third round today in the bottom half of the men's singles and we're about to enjoy the number 28 SE Alexi Po from Australia of course go up against the number two seed and defending Champion Novak jovic down at the bottom of the draw it's been a busy day on site today busy day session wins in this section of the draw for the number six seed Andre rublev and number N Seed Gregor demitro both coming through and straights a Titanic battle on this court this afternoon fabulous match won by Francis TF for that battle of the Americans coming through in five sets against Ben Shelton it's been a comfortable day weatherwise here in New York today pretty much perfect playing conditions these are the uh the temperatures this evening 22 C just over 70° F there isn't small chance of rain later but of course we have the Arash stadium roof which is currently open but we can slide that across if uh we do get any drops of rain and we will be able to continue the action this evening Le good all alongside former ATP Pro Colin Fleming in a commentary Booth ahead of this first match of the night session jovic up against poin Colin a warm welcome first of all how are you seeing this one yeah thank you Lee uh I'm I'm really excited uh for this first match of the night session this evening jovic poer and the Australian a player who is in the form of his life winning the Mass's 1,000 title and Montreal very good in his first two rounds and I think his primed to to throw everything he's got his big game at novette jovic I was here for the night session last night where we had a result that sent shot waves through the tournament Carlos alarz beaten by BK van Sano what does tonight's night session have in store for us yeah and you you do Wonder Don't You what sort of results that what sort of effect that result has on the rest of the draw some of the guys in the locker room like like poin does that feed around the rest of the rest of the players still in the draw and just remind them that anything is possible in this sport If I Was preparing a poin for this match I I would be highlighting that I think you know look at what is possible look at what bik vanan did by you know taking the game to one of the elite players and and and you know having himself at night having himself a career performance two minutes yes Al was out of source but it just shows you what's possible this man though you know I don't there's AR ever been anyone more experienced walking on to uh you know the big stage and an Arash night session and I'm sure he will be ready to go 199 titles so it would be extra special if he can go all the way here in New York in just over a week's time of course it would be a 25th major as well but doubling up with reaching a century that would be a special day yeah he just wouldn't put it past him the interesting thing you mentioned in the matchup for me jovic is you know pretty comfortable so far he was 4-2 down in that second set against Shera and that wasn't looking great the serve has been a question mark you see the uh the head tohe jovic leading the series three love the last meeting was wi year they also played at the Australian Open in recent times both been four sets so with that in mind with the big game of prop and with the the struggles on serve for jovic here I'm expecting poin to really get after the jovic serve you know attack the second try and make him unfor and I'm interested to see where jovic is with that part of his game yeah absolutely couple of close matches this year both at Grand Slam level as well the crowd has set ladies gent start to this one of course because of the length of the Shelton match then this night session just a little bit later than it would normally begin as noack team in position [Music] there changes in the team of course this year butos still a big part of set up and gar Gish has been brought back in to team jovic the X-Men zav mise there on the uh right picture in the white hoodie yeah he's the coach with h in that box tonight as well DAV his Cup captain of course keeping an eye of one of his [Music] charges this should be an awful lot of fun third round action here in New York the 2024 US Open Alexi poing up against Novak jovic Friday Night Under The Lights in New York City doesn't get much better than this so much bigger in the biggest purpose-built tennis stadium in the world 24 time major Champion Novak jovic fresh off his Olympic singles gold medal of course aiming once more for yet another major title it would be number 25 be career title 100 if he can achieve that next Sunday evening standing in his way this evening here Alexi poin who's having a career best season his first Masters 1000 CR those are the biggest tournaments on the ATP Tour that was in Canada can he bring some of that tennis tonight just first of all col for anyone who didn't see poin during that run in Canada there been an awful lot of tennis this this summer we've been squeezing in all all sorts of major tournaments can you just give us a a summary of what he was doing well that week on route to the title yeah sure I mean he's got a big game I like see poin the serve and the forehand are are the big weapons he likes to come forward as well behind those and try and finish at the net he's uh not as complete a player as someone like jovic his backhand poer in can be the the weakness I'm fully expecting jovic to try and pick that Wing apart this evening but he managed it well he managed to slice in Montreal and as I say that gave him a platform for the the serve of the 4 Around the Net play to do the talking not too much of a surprise to see go for a big 400 turn early on CH still with that sleeve on the the right knee that's been one of the complications the last few months injy that he picked up Roland gas forced him to withdraw from that tournament incredibly somehow made it back in time for Wimbledon though 4 no issues with the uh second serve so far oh 40 30 [Applause] jovic in uh his round one win over Ru Albert hit 10 double faults in three sets and then uh well the two in a bit sets against lazera he hit eight doubles just one from five first serves so far here but no sign of any double faults an opening hold from the ser first game let first [Music] service 59 there's M on the right of that shot in the white top very very good Pro himself back in the day there we go 1 wither when he won that title that Master's title in Canada a few weeks ago pretty much part of the buildup to the US Open back-to-back Masters Tournaments in Canada and Cincinnati if you're unfamiliar with the the structure of the ATB talk and why that's so significant there are nine Masters events those are the biggest the richest tournaments on tour with the most ranking points very very difficult to get your hands on one of those trophies almost impossible on the day s feder Nadal jovic and Andy Murray to a certain extent who dominated that scene we've seen a few more few different champions of late but still a phenomenal achievement 30 you can see jovic a really sort of intimidating return position there on the second serve moving right in that poer and just losing control long moved in again there just get didn't get enough on the the second Ser return left himself' already seen what poin is about big serving big strikes on the forehand like poin yet to drop a set through the draw beat Ru Alber to qualify comfortably in the first match 22 and four and then that match with laslo jera that finished sooner than we all expected because of jer's physical issues probably quite relieved but he got out of that match fairly quickly because it was brutally humid that night wasn't it that was the really hot day here in New York just 12 months ago jovic played jera on this very Court was two sets to love down before com coming back to win in in five was looking like he was going to lose the second set 4-2 done big return but jovic soaked it up nicely 39 I think we've lost a a tennis ball six in play any one time they're just trying to match up the the wear and tear and get a a six ball back in Playo Jansen in the chair all Monster Strike on return it was actually impressive the way jovic absorbed the first two balls of the point wasn't it the return in the first big forand then just uh cut it a little too fine trying a a short slice there to bring poin [Applause] forward like the start that Po's made you're playing on Arash for the first time in his career here but he looks pretty settled and relaxed next wonder how much those two meetings this year against jovic on big courts at two other Majors help him this evening I think it definitely helps and and the fact that they were both you know reasonably tight matches uh Australian Open jovic winning 63 46 7 6 63 and then at Wimbledon in the third round jovic winning 46 63 64 76 game up game three with a third Ace Ser after 11 minutes played 2-1 Shelton and TFO these iconic night sessions jovic back in Action 59 was a third title incidentally for poin first came in Singapore 2021 umag on Clay 2023 and then that Masters win Montreal Andre rublev in the finals sub quarter in the semis herat in the quarters demitro Ben Shelton as well some big wins yeah tennis is an amazing sport right because in in that round a 16 match against Gregor demitro and Canada save match points if he loses there not only does he not win Montreal but he he doesn't come into the US Open with anything like the the same confidence a breakthrough we for him it's that type of tennis that he's been playing this summer doesn't come in as a seed either does he significantly that just got him just inside the top 32 seedings that run jumped from 62 in the world he was when he started that week in Canada 30 in the world afterwards so that all helps doesn't it Grand Slam level just gives you a bit of extra protection in the early rounds this is be one of the reasons he's here tonight in the third round look as if po maybe had a play on that ball think he left it 14 clean strike from jovic G's made a good starty confidence fairly relaxed as well yeah and his first two rounds po over 40% of his serves have been UNR returned and he's he's getting a good number here already interesting to see how long he can sustain that though as jovic starts to get a read and a feel for the serve reminded to download the US Open app where you can follow your favorite players track all the scores the stats watch the highlights on there player news a new this year you can watch live 3D views of all singles matches that's available on the App Store [Applause] and you can find that on the Google Play Store as well such of Good Fortune to kick off game five well net cord lucky at anytime but especially here at the US Open the Nets are so heavy and so tightly strong it's rare you get a dead not net cord like that 15 on there's the first double for the big one down the T and just uh losing the trajectory percentage is just like his first two matches below 50% so far so looks the serve struggles might be continuing [Applause] 13 his team you can hear inside mik picking up those messages to Novak mention that the the poer in back down is that the weaker Wing early on here that jovic isn't just going to play to the back hand he he looks like he's he's really Keen to hit with purpose into the forehand corner of proper and to then open up the weakness again joov touch on the low side but number four four this the game number two seed how many times over the years have we seen him neutralized the big serve of an opponent one of the alltime great returners looks like he's just found his timing on the return here love that's the kind of shot now I'm not sure poin misses that against it other players some other players because yes it's love 30 his pressure on but he's he's wary of leaving that four and two Central and giving jovic a look at the pass in a real Hall here first break points big for hands that allow to maintain his consistency first one saved he did so well to hang in there jovic actually pummeling the forehand just waiting on this ball for him to really attack to the backand corner chose the drop shot which well he's how many times he made that in his career but this time the back hand drop shot down the line more chances to come jovic should he need both of them two saved 13 straightforward that one bck serve finding the mark finding the mark on a regular basis so far 71% first serves in so far for the Aussie that's a guy that one of Masters 1,000 in recent weeks you know the the confidence on pressure points more pressure though advantage jovit and for there a [Applause] number mil manovic there the fysio in the white T-shirt kear Gres alongside him Fitness coach fourth chance to break this sixth game back to the well big one the even bigger than the previous one which is around 120 I think at 3040 that one even bigger such a good service motion I love that the motion poin has such a consistent Ball Toss simple racket motion such aever combination just took the pace off dropped it short to coppering Forton was in full control V shic 129 mph serve proper in's biggest of the match so far just brilliant return neutralizes it he just squeezing him in this game isn't he sensing his opportunity there's the return off the forehand body that is not an easy return spaced himself so well this time the first serve can't save him a good second Ser [Applause] though yeah that's just a a brilliant serve jovic expecting something more Central possibly wide to the back hand CH got the desired results this should be a tremendous service game to win Advantage po the 25y old pretty deep in the court Novak it was a good time to throw it in that's a nice CH and a fabulous hold of s five break points saved it's a big time hold the first significant test of the match passed by Alexi poin and he's just not only held serve there but he's he sent a message to jovic you know that he he's up for the fight and he believes did not back down on the big points not body language after that as well just couple of nods to his team you like that one he it relish the big points that guy and knew how to compete plenty of that has rubbed off on Alexi poin [Applause] 59 again attacking into the the forehand corner it's always looking to upgrade in the point jovic he's not just hammering away at the popper in back hand [Applause] 39 the first Ser percentage is is low was below 50% in the first two rounds as well first service [Applause] 14 game inter super new B P first serveur fifth aov leads four games to three for set [Music] [Applause] 15 really anything to suggest that that Master title was around the corner for poin at his tennis coming into that he played played the Olympics as well so it was a very very quick turnaround for the Australian 16 there before Los to [Applause] Faro to that lost his opening two matches in Hamburg and umag two clay courts tournaments just before the Olympic Games suff a five match losing streak between Monte Carlo and the grass season so struggling for form during that period just love the way PO is carrying himself on the court here in this opening set mention it's his first appearance on ash but he looks like he belongs Steely look to the team real belief in what he's doing here 14 15 four that's good just dropped in time everybody inside the triing that ball as it dipped onto the back of the line jovic special isn't it that open stance back hand sliding into the corner for me it's the shot that he has has brought to the sport we've been players of course lots of players that can hit an open stands back but you know just the way he's able to slide you know well outside the The Singles Line and keep two hands on the racket where days gone by players you know even players in this current generation might be slicing because they don't move as well don't have as much stability more pressure on poer in here and that again he's got the answer served big so far when he's needed to next for service he done well once more really impressive set is putting together so far has been under a bit of pressure on serve and he held his nerves stayed calm was a great knife he found there into the corner had he dropped it any shorter jovic would have been waiting to pounce of course as well as he's played so far Colin and as well as he's done under pressure this is when it matters against someone like jovic yeah we're into the sharp end of the set this is where so often jovic sustains even UPS his level and on can have a drop off oh yes what a dick last world class and poin jovic with that trademark backhand drop shot know as he didn't just get there he found a beautiful little flick look at that so close to the net somehow able to play that angle with a bit of pace past jovic what a start to the game LED for service I think too many people are expecting that end product Ser skills from the big man looks like he's chasing the toss a little on that first s percentage is still hovering around 50 quite a few hit hard into the net first point of the game just shaking him up how do you see jovic Miss hit a ball like this especially in a game of this magnitude opportunity developing for the number 28 seed action wide 30 second serve it's huge and exactly the way he has to play those big points it's Brave effective yeah and he's done his homework he knows jovic likes this sliding second surf it was into the forehand and he was waiting for it how about that for a rip reminiscence of some of those 400 strikes from Canada a few weeks ago three break points break what a game that was and what a time to produce some of his best tennis he will serve for this opening set 5-4 po needs five games to four night session giant killing off the back of alarz losing last night way to go those first set's big isn't it in that respect jovic wins the opener then it becomes so much harder but upper SA see what happens if he can serve it out getting way ahead of ourselves here proper and just has to stay in the moment this would be less of a shock I think than last night sensation how good is this the right now he's making a lots of new fans in New York this evening so far well this level is off the charts six points in a row from four all most of them winers from poin he's got everything here he fully deserves these three opportunities coming up to wrap up this opening set goodness me this tennis has been off the charts the last 5 [Applause] minutes set points we got another big upset inside stay long way to go but that is the perfect start for Alexi poin who takes the opening set 64 not 15 this count in the the points tallied towards the end of that first set colum I think it was 10 you made it the last 10 points of the set went the way of poin well you go 11 in a row yeah too many people do that to jovic today and in that fashion you know it just taking control of the Court ovic breaks the Run 13 15 thir well second double you just see in the the middle of picture there in the front row is uh Boris bakovic the Serbian he just trying to give a few signals to jovic that's the his coach here in New York he was with him in the French has been the head coach at [Applause] the thumbs up for that first serve he needs more of those that's the thing is we can highlight the double fall the second serve but one way to protect your second serve is make more first number has been low done with this opening game yes smart slice there from poin down the line he knows the most likely shot from jovic is to come crosscourt into his big forehand probably the reason jovic just pulled it wide didn't want to leave it hanging in the middle of court [Applause] advantage jovic just Dro wide so you second double fall to this Opening Service game 18 remember Colin was telling us he struck during his opening two matches here which is a lot in five sets that was a half chance at juice for second serve butun Slips Away game point jovic first serve finds the net another double you seems to completely lost his rhythm in this opening game that's four of 10 first serves and three double faults it's hard to pick where his mind is as well keeping his emotions in check not really giving anything away numbers for the match but just four of 10 it's it's lower that percentage in this opening game what with the way he's serving you know he made a joke about it in the postmatch interview with Nick Kos you know easy to sort of make a joke about it when you've just uh won a match or well Jared just retired but at this moment in time it must be bothering him was a messy serice game but he's come through it it's the main thing first game second thing he wanted to do was to go down a set in an early break against a youngster who's been playing so well this evening there was a scenario where po poin came on court maybe didn't quite handle the occasion especially early on hasn't been the case though he's come out here on Arash and putting his best level on display just looks comfortable as well doesn't he you know when he's when he's playing good tennis there isn't a an elaborate celebration just a little couple of nods to his team mind straight back on the job wasting any energy in that regard and he's not getting ahead of himself either you know he'll be well aware that he's had some good wins in Canada this is best of five so it's a it's another level against someone like jovic I would imagine he may have been thinking pre-match though you played him at the Australian Open played with wward in both tough four set battles lost them both but I wasn't playing as well then as I am now you know I'm playing the best tennis of my career and in conditions that I like I would say these are his his best conditions pop in a nice uh you know Lively hardcore plenty of speed in the balls I think he may well have been fancing his chances and that's been apparent so far [Music] 145 F his F there one game shades of and came forward so well against alarz last night big return here from jovic love the way he just kept his momentum kept his feet moving through that half volley oh class from poin 5 up [Applause] [Music] 139 1 15 [Applause] m a former wwen semi-finalist of experience to pass on to poin 145 clean a game on Ser that will please doovic again joov serve a lot more reliable joov one betrayals by a set some love one of the the permanent fixtures of American men's tennis the last few years Forest singles ranking just outside the top 20 21 in the world four titles for Stevie one of the standout college careers as well yeah he was a legend of uh USC University of Southern C California's career with 72 straight singles wins and you know college tennis is a it's a good level strange return there for jovic to say just's skipping around a little it's hard to pick where he he's at with his sort of energy levels and keeping his emotions in check but slightly from me out 49 set down to poin and they played at wion this year Australian winning the first set of of that match before jovit came back and won in four set so maybe just trusting himself that he can slowly but surely turn this match in his favor had done so just a few weeks ago that was in the third round game same stage as this evening's contest two games on second sent all the information that you will possibly need regarding the US Open head to the official website usopen.org that's your online home for Point BYO live scoring all the highlights the real time stats on there all the draws tomorrow schedule of course day six of main draw action around the corner it's the official tournament website usopen.org fabulous L beautifully redirected as well sort of you see jovic doing to opponents but 15 beautiful Tas yeah I really feel there's a big opportunity here for poin in this second set he can get to two sets to love he becomes favorite for the match and jovic just with the way he's operating looking a little subdued slightly flat maybe poin can get two sets of Love Before the bear awakens if you like the bance now 30 really attacking the serve nicely this was a second serve that he he lent on with the back hand mentioned they played the Australian Open and Wimbledon this year so far returning from about a meter and a half closer to the Baseline on the first serve that he did in those matches so made a nice adjustment there here we go golden opportunities for the oie well that was the similar to the law that he broke the jovic serve with in the first set got over the backhand wing and again jovic looks a little uncomfortable trying to deal with [Applause] it for three chances it survives the first 15 14 [Applause] two of seven second serve points one in this set so far by jovic second there though up into the body he's pushed it and poer breaks again and he's in business now three G two second set and by one set to left 32 with that break position jovic was quick up out the chair there wasn't he well before the Umpire team in called time 15 could be because he's eager to try and get the break back or could be because he's uh to show some frustration [Applause] it was a great return from jovic to just drop that back end and exactly the right spot to make it difficult and he did so next team trying to get to get it going fire him up there we go beautiful combination probably the most dynamic electric Point we've seen from jovic look at the movement there such a good pass getting it down below the net got to try and use a point A Moment Like That to just find a spark still not much of a reaction sometimes all of a sudden with jovic it'll be a huge celebration after a point like that 145 [Applause] chance to attack with a forehand there just mistimed L sink again no reaction new go lead four games to two qu game you get a set in a break against no that jovic and Arthur Ash you know that's a situation where you can start to become slightly outcome focused maybe get ahead of yourself but no sign of that from Po and just the hammer and consolidates the break with the new ball serving two4 15 now F down there from jovic things though just wondered whether we might get emotion on this play that time but again nothing just straight back to the line he spoke prior to the French or his motivation has been a little in and out this year I think it's fair to say but you know he was certainly clear then that you know the slams playing for Serbia the Olympics were big motivations for him obviously his last tournament was the Olympics where he he won Gold he going through a period of maybe readjusting where the motivation lies we know that singles gold medal was sort of burning throughout his career wasn't it it's an individual sport there could be more going on as well definitely looking out of sort so far this evening game to come to the game now so he's still in touch in this second set po leads four games to three second set from Australia 28 seed is up set and a break on the 24 time major Champion Novak jovic he hasn't face play anywhere near his best tennis and he's looking at 5 we both think a little bit flat this evening but let's not take anything away from poin who's stepped on to the biggest Court in tennis and he's staying in his bubble isn't he yeah very much so jovic was on top of the the first half of the the opening set marginally the first in the match 40er serve had he broken there maybe we're looking at a different story but four all in the first po playing electric tennis to Win It jovic hasn't really laid a glove on him in this second set as yet 13 15 [Applause] feess combination 14 more angle he got a feel for the disguise on the pop and forehand gets himself into such a good position where he could go either way here inside out or inside in just at the last second where he he whips it for the winner 403 [Applause] get it's a cool Miss there from P for joov to just find some better fortunes tonight another unusual Miss on the number two seed ADV Vantage of poin it's poin off the hook you just can't believe it once he's got poin On The Run you're waiting for jovic to win the point but it's another M time forand forced eror starting to move again another game closer to a two set lead B leads five games to three second set right here says saav mise the position there's a lot of tension in that box though isn't there in some of some of the faces that's where a former player like mise hu in the Box as well one Masters at leing his opponents in his career you know fully aware that jovic isn't right here this is a big opportunity for for poin that gesture from mise almost let's go right here get it done before well maybe jovic sort of starts to feel better or starts to get a good vibe going on court talked about huitt helping him so much after the Olympics lost his verev in Paris on the clay but world number one was very complimentary and it's just doubled over there yeah he hold that back this is a real worry I'm not sure if it was on the back hand or or maybe the shot before as he twisted an ankle or something here just hesitated there and moving gingerly out to the back this is a worry for Alexi po we can run that off there was any sort of significant twist or going over on the ankle sometimes you do just get a sort of sharp shooting pain and are able to to walk it off as you say game jovic efficient conclusion to the game from joov and it's all eyes on poin now poin needs five games to second set want it how severe is uh that problem he seems to have picked up the man from Australia serving for a TW set lead against jovic there's nothing WR with that opening nor either Big Time point just when you think he's under pressure in the rally produces something extra special the back end that time been featur tonight 39 serves T out from time to time too so far served bigger and much better than jovic well he's conjured up something special again shots like that make you think it's really going to be your Night 40 now this time beforehand somehow it just creeped over the net and actually made life very difficult for jovic actually put it in a more awkward position could he three set points lead to first service large proportion of this crowd unaware that's just clipped the net bounds on the way over [Applause] 45 m lon's looking more relaxed than anyone in that box former Champion here set point number two nice in second so cool second six games to four now he's in firm control inside AR two set lead over the four time champion hour and a half's tenis two sets jovic he's obviously here in person he's playing he's competing just not sure where L is for almost a little disengaged only he will truly know is it a motivation thing off the back of the Olympic gold is it the congestion of the Season he he has had a couple of weeks off first tournament since the Olympics maybe there's something else going on is he feeling 100% something from deep deep within if he's to win this match has done of course on so many occasions he's he's got previous in terms of turning these sorts of matches around remember Trail by two say to love [Applause] against sered this time last year on this court it was match first game third set [Music] played came back from two sets to love down to beat cner 2022 wiw in quarterfinal 59 two sets to love down to beat sit pass in the final of Ro on garos 2021 he has proven jovic throughout his career he he's got what it takes to recover from this position but as he got it tonight left [Music] 1 to [Applause] 38 left the court winning the second set sometimes that just gives the Mind time to [Applause] wander no indication there anything too problematic with with the ankle no that seems fine they have a chance here for jovic to start the comeback so far one under pressure to play in the opening set Jo for the first time Shing theet as if to see here we goovi visual watches on first point point has had since the first set and there we go some positive body language first comebacks from two sets off down start one game at a time [Applause] if he can hold here this match will have a very different feel all of a sudden by two sets 15 he's just needed that kind of reaction hasn't he the whole Shake of the racket the shout I think to show himself to show poin to show this crowd that he's he's engaged he's fighting and he wants this it's been a sort of shell walking around this stadium so far no doubt he's engaged now 15 [Applause] on amazing how the energy changes as well isn't it inside the stadium when you get that sort of reaction F inside stadium this evening 153 something for them to feed off and I'm sure poin will have noticed the reaction as well [Applause] leveler the first time in the match it's already six unforced terrorist from the Aussie in just two and a half games tempted to go big up the line he just missed though points to his own Baseline jovic must have from the very back edge of it early in the point 40 30 see I thought he missed long [Applause] that's use [Applause] [Music] that's Advantage joov inside up return from juice court so effective if he can make it didn't miss by much G he has burst into life only in his third set jovic leads three game a three game cushion already po two [Applause] set L 15 amazing these matches can change quickly he's to hold here now poin any hope of winning this set you said me last year in the third round of jera two sets love down right in the beginning of the third where just the whole feeling of the match changed similar [Applause] here it's the challenge of best of five set tennis of course uh majority of tournaments they play po m of shaking hands on one of the biggest wins of his career but he's still got a lot of work ultimate isn't it against the very very best in the world can you produce the base level required for long enough best a five set match ride the uh the highs and the lows point to the match incredible St from and even with all the commotion inside Ash he's able to maintain his composure cou the down the line and this over Miss noise in this place it just got louder and louder as the points unfolded 14 [Applause] 1 LED for service game good hold crucial hold keeps him in this third set jov leads is three games to one on third set it is the number two seed in charge of at least this set and stay connected to everything that's happening here at the US Open on the social media channels that's Facebook X Instagram Tik Tok YouTube and this year WhatsApp as well join the conversation with # usop 15 interesting we just saw the jovic team there and bis bakovic sort of leading on the tennis side but in recent times before the split with vich bichi like there was far more engagement and sort of emotion between player and team plenty of discussion going the stands but jovic sort of just very with on the court too much so here we go maybe things just going to take another turn yeah double faults number seven and eight for the night opportunity once again for Popin now that's more intensity from jovic there 153 physical intensity and a real intent in his play that's far more successful that net so far thought it's a real opportunity it was a weak second serve right on to the the forehand weapon of poin maybe couldn't believe his the ball he was receiving well credit to poin little chip getting the ball down L just asking a question but it's a pretty ugly attempt at the volley in all honesty maybe just wasn't sure whether to play short or deep in the court it looked a late decision to try and go back down the line nowhere near making it thank you this is why the previous hold served the Cru show for poer chance to break back now with the second serve well foolish if you miss it goty if you make it big moment 114 milph that second serve through the dice and survived four average first serve speed this evening 115 so that gives you an idea of aggressively he struck that surf advantage jovic sometimes a serve like that the second serve from jovic can win you one more than one point you could sometimes just shake the opponent up a little mentally H took the risk and SP the rewards has that in his locker do can be so dangerous the forehand is so loose by that I mean sort of up a whip with the racket usually want the rack head speed he can he can hurt you sometimes when you least expect it advantage of perhaps a few in the crowd not realizing that had been called wide not by much it brings up another chance for the Australian can he break back in this fifth game peace [Applause] in set number three back on serve 32 jovic leads three games to two third set he not too far away now from the huge win 5 bigest score never had a win over a top five player jovic is one of those of course the current world number two behind Yanik sner know he won that title in Canada didn't come up against the player ranked inside the top five that week 550 one win courtesy of a retirement over a top five play that was against sit pass in Paris 2021 but doesn't strictly go down as a a victory given the Greek retired after six games of that [Music] [Applause] 135 the error is now flowing again for jovic just that bit of energy and emotion when he broke for two love it's gone again crowd is is has gone a little flatter a little quieter 145 just looks very low on energy I have to say thought that was good off the strings 4 [Applause] [Music] sh [Applause] use [Applause] that return we're back to witness another break another twist right on PO in a hurry rushed him into has liked the t- serve often on the big points to the ad courts if he goes for it again here jovic wants some noise he's got the break Midway through this third set yeah you sp it was a good point for poin but this volley was little almost like he wanted to play the short volley and then he he just doubted himself left it hanging and Goodness Me did this ash crowd respond to jovic thank [Applause] you so once more back in front back in control now back just waiting for one or two of our guests to satday thank you ladies and gentlemen the players are ready and he will serve at 4-2 very nice 4 that look easy 15 [Applause] we've got some Aussies in the house shouts of Aussie Aussie Aussie the chance we ringing around Melbourne Park every January Australian's doing well in the men's draw there's another back on this court tomorrow Christopher oconnell will take on yanex sinner the session tomorrow back to another two Australian men 15 in action in the third round in the top half tomorrow Alex stor the number 10 SE plays Dan Evans and Jordan Thompson who be who be here match the number seven seed in the previous round he takes on araldi so four Aussies into the third round of the men's draw hunting in a pack Le and H it will be pleased with their results stuck Ah that's more like the drop we've come to enjoy and admire yeah big hitting that forand down the line to give him control I thought he telegraphed this drop shot in hindsight poin probably should have gone down the line but it's another really positive point for jovic look at the space there signs that he's starting a kind of different here yeah not just fewer erors but starting to attack with the the Precision we're used to seeing you know the accuracy tight to the sidelines the depth in the four definitely starting to to feel better here jovic and opens up the 52 lead getting closer to taking under the here in New York by two sets to so can Alexi poer in keep this third set alive live trailing 5-2 now kind of test for him now got to keep believing he can get across the line against one of the best in the business tonight yeah 5 now perhaps just as importantly perhaps more importantly ReDiscover that the level of tennis that got him into a two set lead yeah he's just he's lost a bit of the intensity particularly early in the set after he took the break from the court recovered for for a short period not being at the sustained high level that we saw in the first two sets it can often happen for players that are relatively less experienced playing best of five sets you know you you win the first two and you have a a bit of a lapse trovich has improved as well he still nowhere near his b but his level has improved in this third set good look at the four here look at the grip the Western grip but he's very loose with the grip on the Racket and is's able to just whip it through 30 on it's almost impossible to defend against that sort of quality Here Comes Novak 30 40 looking to finish this set in [Applause] style second seed with set point squeeze that zovic this and inside Ash Stadium champ is back in business eight times he's come back from a two set deficit will this be another night to remember for the Serb 59 oh so [Applause] now you would expect a response here from poin so it just feels important you jovic is the master isn't he sort of management momentum throughout these matches but feels important for him to start this four set strongly going to try and keep poing down keep himself sort of more energized more engaged sasty from jovic starting to feel it we've seen it so many times from him out just yet but I do think he needs a a solid couple of service games just to to settle himself yeah he needs to keep this fourth set tight doesn't he he's broken three times in that third set remember game fundamentally is based on the big serve attacking game not being broken very often 15 [Applause] 30 do without those creeping in for to hand over any cheap points at this [Applause] stage winner Big Time forand ball just at the right height able to just smack through the back of it has definitely got a read on the serve though hasn't he that poin is liking these served his forehand on the bigger moments interesting to see poing goes te again here and if he does will jovic be waiting for it you could see jovic even if that serve went in was was waiting for that return he's got a read on the proper in game a good stage that's an example I actually think it wasn't a bad thing that he missed the first serve I think with that first serve had gone in jovic was waiting for it and would have probably done something meaningful with the return quality second into the body enough on that approach oh near enough and here comes jovic again bringing the crow into this match jovic that's not going to get it done against jovic short and [Applause] [Music] Central chance to strike early as he did in the third sets second serve is the first bre Point into the body jovic just caught off balance LED for service almost perfect tough to take isn't it you're so desperate for the ace Advantage at po [Applause] characteristic error there just didn't quite get down and stay down with the [Applause] slice please a good decision to go back behind and a good hold just the needed at this stage of the match and a massive release of tension here for poin probably just starting to feel like the match was slipping away from him look at that that's a war cry he is right up for this here 5 now [Applause] good defense thr everything jovic 3 left no way through [Applause] real intensity to these points now 1 15 jovic is is playing better poin trying to restle back control to think early stages of theal you know if it goes to two sets all hard to see jovic not converting the comeback in that situation ation but po can just stay with and then maybe get on top of these early stages is it's best chance has to be to win this in four beautiful one of his best starting to reel off some big time tennis again might be too little in the context of this game but good signs G serves working back nine of 10 by two sets to one was lacking somewhat in sets numbers one and two huge test of poin self-belief at this stage [Applause] love stamina Focus all those many many elements that are required to be a top level tennis player are required to be the very best on the biggest stages doesn't get bigger than this 30 [Applause] oh surprising Miss there on one of the most 15 and 30 reliable two-handed back cans we've ever seen just giving poin an element of breathing space here still needs to get things right up again is an inspired half volley there under extreme pressure 1530 really awkward return from jovic and he just stayed so stable mentally and physically through the half volley he knew that was big 14 sh Thomas just so much more on that shot isn't it so much more intensity really ripped the forehand [Applause] yes an awful lot in terms of outpouring of emotion from Novak every now and again yeah between points but in the points there's definitely more yeah intensity more purpose to his play look in the eyes again the S of laser that we' seen at times in his career the big moments when he really dials in it's a quality serve there from poin remember in the first set in a couple of really tough holes just to to stay with jovic early on well we'll see two G foret hold of service was pushing that and well to survive a little test [Applause] ped shop.org is the official shop for the 2024 US Open merchandise all the US Open bu accessories for the whole family available official US Open shop online home of merch here from flushing meows usopenshop.org spectator you mean right ladies and Gentlemen please do not make any noise and doing the ready thank you [Applause] electric from po nothing wrong with the point that jovic played good serve attack ball the AI moving well defending [Applause] well he Mick the point from jovic continues to maintain very impressive first percentage in this set 13 of 14 he's made bit different story in that respect as well number that was way down opening passages of play Oh What a point can you believe it he's done it again second time in the game almost a carbon copy this time two hands on the back hand gets it down low and jovic cannot believe it thank you can he turn this quality thank you into a break of [Music] serve jaic defends now he wants some noise she getting tasty you response this is gutsy from jovic break point down to come forwards to force the issue he got the job done sets one and two you would almost question did he really want it tonight got her answer now he does now yeah fully engaged oh oh he that Sur how to play on that and now it's F's turn to engage Advantage he's got plenty of support inside this Stadium as well this is good stuff there was no doubt jovic had a play on this ball and hard to believe he left it it was never going long well inside the Baseline and look at this ladies and gentlemen talk about being up for the fight point for the Australian can he strike that was nice call this game this one back and fourth fascinating fifth game in this fourth set these guys have just come into the middle of the ring and started throwing hakers at each other the gloves are off this is good fun feeling like this could be a pivotal game everybody's feeling it decided to go B just couldn't quite control time look at the eyes from jovic they were locked down the court at poin as all as if to say is that all you've got well and I wonder what reaction he might bring if he holds here this is what I refer to in the second set you know he he's almost poked the bear with that g in the crowd up poing he's entitled to do it but he's got jovic's attention can you believe it and keeps this game going not sure it was the cleanest foran he's hit tonight but it have just enough topsman on it maybe as a result of a slightest in Miss hits whip on that ball dipping in a hurry well inside the line in the end 17th winner off that wing Advantage hasn't been intimidated by the the challenge this evening hasn't been afraid and [Applause] engaging showing his emotion third break points of this fifth game please monster second serve Under Pressure not for the first time this evening ladies and Gentlemen please do not make any noise the first and second service great Point saved motion thank you why such a great Champion makes more often than not proper almost indicating he knew it was coming he just he couldn't deal with it 117 mph that second serve please [Applause] advantage on the ninth double fults of the evening first in this set he not going to cost him the service follows see something continue for jov looks like he's just telling his team to come [Applause] down comilation Bing Mr jovic [Applause] still have a first serve what a start pan breaks takes control of this fourth set it's all happening jovic in big big trouble now poin with the break 3-2 [Applause] enough time isn't that and there was enough in that previous game where you know you saw jovic giving him the eyes and he's engaged isn't he mentally he'll want to come back here and prove a point to poer in you feel he's going to make life very difficult for the a for service certainly going to make him earn it out now 30 [Applause] about to witness an immediate response Unis that me such a big [Applause] Point didn't really get up and move through the [Applause] shot is worth reminding ourselves since jovic's first tournament on hardcour for quite some time didn't play after Paris of course the Olympics I should say that's hardc Court March match was in March at Indian [Applause] Wells here he comes again 154 held his nerve under the overheads under the [Applause] lights he wants this jovic make no mistake about it oh is make a pass terrific step under pressure on the first break point is saved well complete change up there bringing jovic into the net he completely fed the great man who thought he was going down the line with the pass to Mal trying to stay calm he's looking very calm surface at least inter the heart about they come down a touch after that most recent Ace a 12th just started to change things up in this set hasn't he majority of the break points previously in this match has been the first serve down the T that was the ace wide that was a make how has that cut the line he was late on it Advantage you're expecting it to just drift wide caught a piece of the line jovic can't believe that [Applause] one of them smiling for different reasons game points pop in again another and it takes him just a little bit closer to the biggest win of his career lead gam up with the serve Direction got him twice out wide there with jovic expecting the t- [Applause] surf 2006 the last time stovic lost before the fourth round here at the US Open the man to do it is sitting in pin's [Applause] box just take a moment to reflect on that 2006 15 almost 20 years ago it's incredible I did hear that right the last time he lost before the fourth round Lon Hugh at 2006 beat him in the third round here H also the last Australian to beat jovic in a grand slam was poin who became the first Australian to win a masters event since Leon huitt when he won in Canada well he's had a Time violation jovic but I think he'll be allowed some discretion here just to change his racket after the double fault [Applause] 59 yeah the shot clock just being started now so seeo yanson using some common sense there 30 to [Music] oh dou two in the game right yep a double break make life a lot easier for poin you feel if jovic can keep it to one break he's got every chance of getting back on serve but he's on the edge here oh what a what a what a Moment 4 30 poin must have felt he was in such a good position after he struck such a good backhand game point for the second seat this time some good passes tonight good times and he's disguised this again jovic though gives him the running forehand remember last time he flicked it crosscourt that's what jovic covered this time but the ball actually fairly Central I think if jovic had just kept his balance he might have be able to react to that quality from poer and though Leed for service oh it's good can you believe it he's got him again on Earth did he chase that down Advantage po this is is playing the tennis of his life thank you first ever appearance and he's never going to forget it break point for the 28th seed to go up a double break let for surely that would be enough if he can convert here to all but seal victory let for serve yes nice call how many times has he done that under pressure and must win Point must win game and he's just smoked that a out wide 124 milph yeah what pressure I'll just hit the biggest serve of the match out wide right in the corner incredible serve a stroke of three hours advantage jovic [Applause] it's a number we discussed at the start of the match they served Fair few double faults and he opening two matches here up to 12 now this evening and back to juice still more work to do Advantage jovic silky smooth two-hander here made it look a lot easier than it [Applause] [Music] was please oh just cannot get out of this [Applause] game it's unbelievable once the Gremlins get in the system on the second serve they they tend to stay for a while that's just as bad as a ER this is the back way [Applause] long well if Noak jovic was there for the taking it's right here right now it's been erratic service game chance number two for poin [Applause] enormous pressure on this second serve again missed it went big with a server and small couldn't control the [Applause] forand G Victory he was serve the biggest win of his life service hold away escapes him just a word on how rare it would be love if we were to see poin take out the number two seed this evening with the the defeat for alcaras last night the last time we've lost the the second and third seeds in the men's draw before the round of 16 was 1973 here the second and third seeds that year elen starzi and Arthur Ash markable L 13 24 hours not there yet yeah incredible puts into context uh the magnitude of the upset last night and potentially this to follow but you know so often the hardest game to win is the last one poin six times prior to this he's made the third round of a grand slam but he's never made the fourth run as he's never beaten a top five player that's the thing you know he won the in Montreal take anything away from that event but in my eyes this would been the biggest win of his career yeah just the profile of the match the stage that he's playing on the quality of the opposition first [Applause] Saved 3040 two down 31 mil an hour that's that's his biggest this evening break point number three oh that's ridiculous what a pickup he's got himself back to juice yes well it is ridiculous but it's not surprising this is the kind of night Alexi poin is having of course he's made that the reaction off his body advantage jovic that's pretty cool isn't he despite the circumstances [Applause] [Music] and that's one break of serve that's disappeared quickly B Le five games to three jovic you know he could easily have let the match go the frustration of how poor his service game at 24 was he played on the fact he knew it would be a tough game for poin showed all his experience there around as he very quick to get this game underway 50 now CAU from Andre aasy you know little clock that runs out on you in tennis until po room wins the last Point jovic has a fighting chance here and he he he's he's hanging around [Applause] 15 [Applause] all now he would dearly love it if he could get this done right here Alexi poin 1 15 the dra another service game want to finish off the biggest win of his career 24,000 people 25 what is this at 2 four doesn't really matter all of that is now is what lies ahead jovic wants one more look at the popper and serve oh 403 four of 15 second serve points in this set six doubles completely lost the feeling and the belief in his second serve himself within touching distance once more [Applause] h the Bas advantage j he's always going to be the play you got to look at a second serve that's how close it was it's the right way to go for proper and he can't back off and hope that jich will give him this he's got to keep going for it right to the end joov missed the approach some good defense from jovic and he's still alive just but he's still fighting poin will get one more chance to fin this off five four five games to four four set and by two sets to one thank you this is a unique stadium in tennis it's getting louder and louder that's the St he was looking for 5 now jov knows that big part of this game is out of his control everything he touches he'll try and put in [Music] play make that return there slipp it away from him now 1 now he please 49 whats a serve what A noise he's on the plank the champion is out the bigest of this man's life 26 64 and yes another huge huge shock here in New York Alexi poin into new territory had the majors what a summer for this guy a four set victory over the four-time champion [Applause] [Applause] well lightning strikes twice in New York second consecutive night session on ash we've lost one of the the big Nam one of the tournament favorites jovic didn't really look at the races certainly the first two sets a little disengaged mentally he looked flat low on energy capitalize going to slow start to set three from poin he looked back in it in set four but take nothing away from Alexi poin what a performance great reception here for the defending [Applause] Champion 25th Grand Slam will have to wait for jovic a 100th title will have to wait for jovic we'll find out more I'm sure when he speaks to the world's media it's here from this young Australian what it means to him to produce a result like that speaking to Chris Buon Alexi what a match with some incredible points you've had your battle against Novak before how'd you get it done today uh Third Time Lucky I guess um no honestly we had some battles uh at Australian Open at Wimbledon I had my chances in those matches but didn't take him this match was a little bit different I was able to take my chances when I had him and uh yeah played some good tennis into the round of 16 for the first time in your career and you do it beating the greatest of all time what are the emotions you're feeling right now yeah it's uh it's unbelievable because I've I've been in the third round about 15 times in my career but I haven't been able to get past to the fourth round and to be able to do it against uh the greatest of all time uh to get into the fourth round is is unbelievable you know so yeah it's a great feeling and the hard work has paid off congratulations what a show you put on tonight Alexi bar everybody he certainly did he's a he's a cool customer isn't he very composed assessment and Analysis of what it's feeling like and that has blown the bottom section of the draw wide open certainly has there's a few of the stats from the the match summary the one that jumps off the page to me forand winners look at that the pop forehand was large and in charge all evening I mean the forehand he hit to break for the first time in that fourth set will live long in the memory that was a rocket 96 mph one of the great reactions to match and talk about a draw that is now wide openly as you say yeah look at this Ru through to face demitro in the round of 16 tifo who came through against Shelton will play Alexi poin it's going to be a fascinating second week here in New York shock wave still reverberating around this famous Stadium what a night for this man into the round of 16 for the first time in his career what a way to do it beating the 24 time major champion and recent of course Olympic gold medalist on the biggest stage in tennis holding his nerve impressively well that concludes coverage of match number one we've still got more tennis to come this evening we'll be back with more live tennis shortly from our Le good Colin Fleming it's by for now [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] w yeah [Applause] [Applause] and second TR [Applause] [Applause] sh [Applause] again St r [Applause] again sh [Applause] G sett 26 to1 6 64
