during late April 1983 to perform at the short-lived BB magon theatrical venue on blor Street on three consecutive nights while in town ctv's Flagship news magazine program W5 did a feature on Carrie that aired nationally in Canada back in La within months he landed the main role on the duck Factory a sitcom being developed veloped for NBC and in late November 1983 still got to debut his impressionist act on The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson via a promotional appearance for the sitcom about to start airing nationally in the United States on the same network 34 in the meantime he was cast for a supporting role in the Warner Bros comedy production Finders Keepers shot in the Canadian province of Alberta during late summer 1983 for his Tonight Show appearance that aired on American Thanksgiving 21-year-old Carrie went through his most popular Impressions Elvis Presley lii bnov Jack Nicholson Bruce D Clint Eastwood Charles Bronson Michael Landon James Dean at the Extraterrestrial Charles Nelson Riley characters from My Three Sons and Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy and Rapid succession 35 after completing is set though getting the okay gesture from Carson the impressionist comic was notably not waved over by the host to join him on the couch a usual indication that while sufficiently pleased the powerful host was probably not ecstatic about the performance at the Royal York hotel's Ballroom 39 by the time he made his debut appearance on NBC's Late Night with David Letterman in Late July 1984 the network had already cancelled the duck Factory Carrie went back to turn with his impressionist act including off an opening for Rodney Dangerfield after being noticed doing standup by producer Samuel Goldwin Jr and contacted to audition for a teen horror sex comedy being developed by the Samuel Goldwin company Carrie landed a starring role in Once Bitten shot in early 1985 40 Cary would continue getting film roles throughout late summer and early fall 1985 he shot a supporting part in Francis Ford capa's Peggy Sue got married which went into a long post- production process 40 in parallel he decided to try out for Saturday night life again this time ahead of the show's 1985 86 season being prepared by returning executive producer Lauren Michaels who was looking to hire an all new cast 5 years removed from his previous SNL audition 23-year-old Cary was rejected Ed again reportedly never even getting the chance to audition his material post nuclear Elvis hybrid impression and impersonation of Henry Fonda from On Golden Pond in front of executive producer Michaels due to the show's producers and Senior writers Al Franken Tom Davis and Jim Downey deciding that Michaels would not like it 41 unlike his previous SNL rejection Carrie now had a bit of a film career to fall back on in addition to his impressionist standup act Once Bitten was released in mid November 1985 and turned turned out to be a modest box office hit despite drawing poor reviews back on the comedy club circuit with impressions in Fall 1986 Carrie audition for SNL's upcoming season his third attempt at getting on The Ensemble sketch comedy show finally managing to perform for the show's executive producer Lauren Michaels at a Burbank studio with returning cast members Dennis Miller John Lovitz and Nora dun also watching the audition Carrie was rejected again 41 among the group of hopefuls auditioning alongside carrye on this occasion were Dana Carvey and Phil Hartman both of whom were hired 41 sensing that doing only Impressions was turning into a career dead end Carrie set out to develop a new Live Comedy act 42 much to the dismay of comedy club Owners booking him he began abandoning trademark celebrity Impressions opting instead to try adding observational and character humor to his comedic repertoire a process that often involved forcing himself to improvise and scramble in front of dissatisfied live audiences that came to see him do Impressions 42 from 1990 to 1994 Kerrie was a regular cast member of The Ensemble comedy television series and Living Color 43 the popularity of the series helped him to land his first few major film roles 1994 1998 rise to fame Carrie played the lead role in Ace Ventura Pet Detective which was released in February 1994 and went on to grow $72 million in the United States and Canada 44 following its success and before the release of his next film The Mask which was anticipated to be another hit Morgan Creek Productions paid him $5 million to reprise his role as Ace Ventura and new line Cinema offered him $7 million to make a sequel to the mask and paid him $7 million to appear in Dumb and Dumber a nearly 10-fold increase on his salary for Ace Ventura 4546 The Mask released in July 1994 gross $351 million worldwide 4748 and Dumb and Dumber released in December 1994 was another Commercial Success grossing over $270 million worldwide 49 Carrie received his first Golden Globe Award nomination for best actor for his work in the mask and was voted second on Quigley's top 10 money making Stars poll behind Tom Hanks 50 Carrie portrayed the Batman villain The Riddler and the Joel schacher directed superhero film Batman Forever 1995 the film received mixed reviews but was a box office success he reprised his role as Ace Ventura in Ace Ventura when Nature Calls which was also released in 1995 like the original film it was well received by the public but poorly received by critics it was a huge box office success earning $212 million worldwide in addition to Breaking records with a $40 million opening weekend 51 Cary became the first actor to be paid $20 million for his next film The Cable Guy 1996 52 directed by Ben Stiller the film was a satirical black comedy in which Carrie played a lonely menacing cable TV installer who infiltrates the life of one of his customers played by Matthew broadrick the role was a departure from the hapless hyper overconfident after a series of misfortunes Bruce complains to God that he's the one that should be fired Bruce receives a message on his pager which takes him to an empty Warehouse where he meets God God offers to give Bruce his powers to prove that he is doing the job correctly God tells Bruce that he cannot tell others he has God's powers to avoid the media pension nor can he use the powers to alter Free Will Bruce is initially jubilant with the powers using them for personal gains such as regaining his previous job and impressing his girlfriend Grace Connelly Bruce finds ways of using his powers around Buffalo to cause miraculous events to occur at otherwise mundane events that he covers such as discovering Jimmy Hoffa's body during a segment on police training or causing a meteor to harmlessly land near a cook off earning him the nickname Mr exclusive Bruce then causes Evan to embarrass himself on air causing Evan to be fired in favor of Bruce as the new anchor Bruce continues to hear voices in his head and reencounters God who explains the voices are prayers that Bruce must deal with Bruce creates a computerized email like system to receive the prayers and respond but finds that the influx is far too many for him to handle and sets the program to answer every prayer yes automatically Bruce attends a party celebrating his promotion when Grace arrives she finds Bruce kissing his co-anchor Susan Orga after she forcefully comes on to him and quickly leaves Bruce follows her trying to use his powers to convince her to stay but cannot influence her Free Will as Bruce looks around he realizes that Buffalo has fallen into chaos due to his actions parts of the city believe the apocalypse is nearly upon Earth due to the meteor strikes while a large number of people all having prayed to win the multi-million dollar lottery and received only $17 in return have started rioting in the streets Bruce returns to God who explains that he cannot solve all the problems and Bruce must figure out a way himself Bruce then starts to help others without using his powers including giving Evan his job back he returns to his computer at home and goes about answering prayers earnestly as he reads through them he finds a prayer from Grace wishing for his success and well-being as Bruce reads it another prayer from Grace arrives this one wishing not to be in with him anymore stunned by this development Bruce walks alone on a highway asking God to take back his powers and leaving his Fate In His Hands Bruce is suddenly hit by a truck and regains Consciousness in a white void God Appears and he asks Bruce what he really wants Bruce admits that he only wants to make sure Grace Finds a man that would make her happy God agrees and Bruce finds himself in the hospital where his doctors help him recover Grace finally arrives at the hospital and reconciles with Bruce following his recovery Bruce returns to his field reporting job but decides to take more pleasure in the simple stories in Buffalo instead in June 2000 it was announced that Universal Pictures had paid over $1 million for a spec script titled Bruce Almighty 6 with the intention of positioning the script as a
