Out Swinging right from their opening [Applause] whistle they move leaport sending him in motion on play action ah right away they're coming after him and they get him a sack on the opening snap of the game this is a defensive coordinator just testing the waters how is your protection plan do you have a plan for any linebacker or second level pressures well I think we got the answer on this one because they had no answer for it and you can bet he's going to continue to dial those up work to do now as they come up on second and long here's the first Carry for the Iowa State Cyclone David Montgomery and he'll bring this to about the 25 the rookie out of Florida State Jared verse on the tackle [Applause] this opening drive not going as scripted it is third and long now G here's a screen set up for Gibs he's going to be brought down very close to that line to gain they're going to Mark him just a bit short and now it's Fourth Down the initial reaction is how does this quarterback not throw the ball past the first down line to gain to try to extend this drive and the reality is cuz they've already decided they're going to go for it on fourth down if he doesn't pick up the extra yards after the catch they've got a fourth down play call they feel great about we're going to see what it looks like and good coverage by the Pug team they stop him before he can get any return cranked up the Rams Led Out by a Super Bowl champion Matthew Stafford second among all active passers in the NFL only Aaron roders has thrown for more yards to believe Greg it's already season 16 for the man out of the University of Georgia I had a coach tell me earlier in my career Mike specifically about the quarterback position if you don't have fast feet you better have a fast mind and here we have a guy that has played a lot of games under Center he has seen a lot of football and while he might not be as mobile he might not have the arm strength to make all the throws he had earlier in his career that experience behind Center that experience being in these moments for four and having that quick mind there's not a whole lot of defense is going to throw at him that he hasn't seen he decides to go with the safe throw and throws it well short of the sticks and at this level Mike you just can't miss layups like that a play fake now Stafford to throw that's to last year's rookie sensation puka AA and they'll be set up now up past the 40 with that one one Zone Route running Mike is very simple right I mean everyone wants to complicate offensive football and make it super technical once you come off the line of scrimmage after the ball is snapped and you know it's Zone coverage as long as it's sort of in the area the quarterback expects you to be my rule was just run where they're not and when he throws it catch it the motion man is NCA a first down throw for Stafford this one caught by Parkinson and they'll have it across Midfield down at the opposing 46 yd line every once in a while it just comes down to you need somebody in the Huddle to just make a play and it wasn't a whole lot fancy here the quarterback just dumps the ball down a quick underneath completion and then really it's the yards after catch that did the rest and that's what it takes you're not always going to have the perfect play you're not always going to dial up the perfect play against the perfect look sometimes players need to make plays and that was a good one there how often do we see linebackers be so fast trying to track down the ball carrier that they end up actually overrunning the play and allowing the running back to cut back but not this guy does a great job staying in Phase stretching this ball out sideways and he brings him down for a loss it's another run here for Williams and some good blocking bringing up a gain of nine as we get to third down very positive Returns on that run I mean really the only thing not to like is that they weren't able to move the chains you know what the way he ran there I think they go right back to him and see if he has even a bigger carry in cup in motion Stafford now on third down here's a screen set up to Williams and he will not quite get to the marker good job there defensively and now decision time what are you going to do on fourth down when you're willing to throw the ball short of the sticks on third down you know what that tells me Mike the decision to go for it on fourth down has already been made if you're able to pick it up with yards after the catch great but if not it's a fourth and short and you give yourself a realistic shot of converting on this fourth down and this is the danger of trying these long field goals remember Mike if you miss the other team gets the ball at the spot of the kick so it's going to end up setting them up for great field position as they start this next Drive the Lions offense going to take over now for the second time they'll search for the first points of this game as they begin the drive on First and 10 [Applause] [Applause] so they start this on the ground with [Applause] Montgomery second and a yard [Applause] one more time for Montgomery and they'll finally run him down but not before he takes it inside the 50 big hole up the middle the interior of this offensive line did a great job clearing some space the back saw it quick and he hit it and next thing you know he was in the secondary for a big pick we can still get a first down at the one first and 10 they go from the 11 the timing of these RPO Concepts that's the entire key remember Mike different than the college game these offensive lineman they're blocking for the run but if that ball gets pulled the pass option of the play they're not allowed downfield in the college game they get a threey window that they're allowed to be downfield even on a forward pass pass that's not the rule in the NFL these decisions have to be made quickly if not even after a good pickup you could be coming back due to a [Applause] flag from the gun it's G one take it in Damon Williams touchdown Detroit but you think back to their first possession of this game Mike it resulted in a punt not exactly the fast start the coaches told us was so important as this game unfolds they get the ball back for possession two now they try to find some Rhythm find their identity of the game plan and they come away with six so that's how you bounce back in this league it's not always going to be perfect really nice job settling into this game here with their second possession they'll line it up to kick the extra [Applause] point the kick is good and the lions will take a seven nothing lead [Applause] both teams ready to go once more as the kicks away Johnson now to return nice job by the return team as he takes it AC AC cross the 30yd line the Rams offense ready for their second possession they Trail here by a touchdown as this drive will start with a first down from the gun here's Stafford that's p in on the left by Thea here's a second and three fourth coming from the shotgun it's Stafford and that's going to be incomplete coverage was good that time the contact jarring the ball loose and forcing third down well defended there the quarterback's trying to attack this defense outside the numbers those really wide angle throws near the sideline sometimes could be very hard to defend so give a lot of credit to this secondary they were all on the same page and the ball Falls incomplete he'll drop this down to Williams and he's going to have the first down taken down after a short pick up of five but it will keep the drive going Mike I think we make so much of all these fancy routes right the selling the head fakes getting in and out of the break and while that's really important to create separation that's really more of a man beater that's when teams want to just play you one-on-one and you have to beat the defender against Zone defense that we saw here it's a lot more simpler understand the concept of the play understand where the holes in the defense are and get there and be friendly to the quarterback and if you're open stay open that's NFL route running that's what the best guys do they face second down and seven play action now for Stafford that'll be caught by the running back Williams and that's a first down it will be a gain of eight we see this week in and week out Mike these running backs in today's game they really have the skill set of a wide receiver so if you're going to guard him one-on-one and you know the offense is going to use him in the passing game you better have that guy you better have that matchup guy that you're confident to put on him and say okay you're going to go out there in space and defend the reer like this and after plays like that I'm not sure how much more man coverage they can afford to [Applause] play an enviable spot to operate from here's second in inches out of the gun Stafford he gets it into the hands of at and they'll pick up the first down a gain of about four offensively Landing a lot of body blows on this drive Mike just the ability to steadily March the ball down field and remain so efficient both run and pass as they continue to wear this defense out they have to find a way to end this drive with points anything short of that be a bit of a let down it'll be a run out of the gun with Williams and they bring him down inside the 25 yd line and a nice pick up there by the back with an explosive Run play and it's important to point out Mike this offensive play caller he's still working off that opening script it doesn't necessarily have to just be the first possession using formations using Run game and pass unmask the defense and understand where to take the play calling as the game unfolds to the goal line and in Cooper cup touchdown Los Angeles you know Mike at this level not all touchdowns are created equal there are some plays that result in touchdowns and then there are touchdown strikes and this one is the latter I mean you talk about a confidently thrown ball on the money downfield it doesn't get a lot better than this and his receiver is able to take it in for six Joshua cardi comes out now for the extra point [Applause] he's got it and the Rams will tie things up at 77 here in the opening quarter so back to level after the touchdown and time for the kickoff here's Craig Reynolds to return and it'll be brought down past the 25 decent field position to start this drive the Lions offense ready to see what they can do with this next possession they'll try to break out of this deadlock we are all even at seven as they start this drive first and 10 [Applause] on the ground Montgomery to start the drop and he'll get about six there setting up second down [Applause] out of the shotgun it's g under pressure and he'll go down they got him that's the rookie Jared verse fighting his way in to record the set and what stands out the most about verse Mike is really just his consistent production at the college level I mean his last three seasons all over nine sacks he's got explosive hands really good feet and it's that first step to get on the offensive lineman so fast that allows him to win so often they've got themselves a pretty physical pass rusher here in Los Angeles so backed up after the sack and now it's third and long to throw is gone he'll get this one complete to Safe BR and they will bring him down on the other side of Midfield this is Clinic tape for any young wide receiver out there watching this guy run routes he has the defender thinking everything is a go ball attack him vertically and then when you get to your route depth you stick that foot in the ground you break in balls on time results in a nice first down pickup they'll come up here first and [Applause] 10 Goff with the give to Montgomery he'll be stacked up at the line of scrimmage no gain on the play what makes great linebackers stand out from the pack is their instincts and their Vision in this case the linebacker has his keys brings him right where the ball is going and he's able to make a play at the point of attack and keep this to a no game they move leaport sending him in motion on second down gof brought in by the tight end Sam leapor 18 yds on the pickup there first down Detroit they've done a nice job spreading the ball around make the defense have to account for as many different weapons as possible here early but think back to our conversation with this coaching staff Mike they identified this guy as someone they needed to get involved early and often so that might be his first Target I don't think it's going to his last and they'll get about half of what they needed it's a pick up of five and sets up second and five the drag route we used to say this is day one install every single offense in the NFL has this sort of Route especially for the tight end position and depending on the speed and the run after catchability of the tight end sometimes it can lead to some of the biggest gains they move leaport sending him in motion a second down throw for G he'll find Montgomery out of the back field now they are in business inside the 15yd line it's like a texp methodical efficient NFL drive four for four throwing the ball mixing in some run you're just marching the ball down field at your will and they get a fresh set of downs now to see if they can convert this nice drive into some points this pass complete to Raymond and that keeps him ahead of schedule that's a first down completion of seven [Applause] yds here's second and three to [Applause] go Goff to throw that's called in at the two and he's in amanra safe br touchdown lions [Applause] a try here for the extra [Applause] point his kick is good and the liance will move out to a 14-7 lead [Applause] [Applause] the kickoff team is out on the field and we're back to it as the kicks away Johnson now to return he'll work his way across the 25 yd line the Rams offense getting set to get back to work they'll see if they can put something together here beginning with first and [Applause] 10 they'll start this on the ground it's Williams and that'll be a pickup of three second and [Applause] seven a shotgun sna to Stafford throw right side H in by cup and he's going to be brought down up past the 45 not a whole lot complicated about this play Mike that was understanding where the holes of the defense were remember in this Zone coverage you got to find green grass get past the first down marker be friendly to the quarterback and then the ball has to be out on time before those Zone Defenders can react to the receiver it's exactly how it played out here you can drop all the fancy plays you want but when the quarterback and the receiver see it through the same set of eyes it's virtually impossible to stop that's to the right side and incomplete it's rare to see an offense that finds themsel trailing and say well their quarterbacks been actually one of their biggest bright spots usually that doesn't go hand in hand so it's a little surprising to see him miss a throw like that on a day where he's completed passes at a highly efficient rate now it's a bootleg with Stafford that ball incomplete got the hands in there to break it up could have been a big Gainer instead it sets up a third down his offense is doing everything they can to quiet this crowd and even though they missed on that long attempt at least it sets the tone that they're going to continue to attack they're going to continue to be aggressive especially through the air and they can come up with the completion on one of those downfield passes it's going to go a long way to settling themselves into this game and he'll be taken down but they are in business inside the 30 yd line well it goes without saying you want to play wide receiver in the NFL Mike how well can you change directions how fast can you get your body from one direction to another and when you can cut like this guy I'm not sure how you guard [Applause] them a fresh set of downs to work with it is first down and 10 Stafford to throw again going right back to Nua complete certainly not the biggest play of the day but a good example of picking up positive yardage staying ahead of the chains by a well-timed ball and a well-timed route second down and three to the air again Stafford and they'll pick up the first down a gain of about [Applause] four again it's Stafford find it's NCA on the slant and he's going to be brought down on what will be the final play in this opening quarter so we are through one on Sunday Night Football 14-7 is our score and we are back to the Motor City inim moment two yds from six points it is first down and [Applause] goal they'll run it's Williams he'll get this forward no signal they're going to Mark him down at the one the ball a little closer now it is second and goal one more time for Williams and he won't quite get in down to the one setting up third and goal now Stafford on Third and goal that is caught by the tight end touchdown RS Greg it's the quarterback's best friend and you were that guy for a lot of years the tight end in a tight area with man coverage yeah it's really twofold Mike right first and foremost we see so many of these tight ends around the league that now have gotten to the point where one-on-one matchups that's Advantage offense but then even in the cases they don't create great separation Mike it's their size their catch radius it's such a friendly Target for the quarterback that when things get tight in the Red Zone they look to the tight [Applause] end the extra point from cardi is good and the Rams will tie things up we are all even at [Applause] 14 so back to level after the touchdown and time for the kickoff Reynolds now on the return and a decent return there he'll get this up just side of the 30 so Jared GFF and the Lions offense getting set for this next drive this one everything we could have hoped for to this point all even at 14 they'll start this drive with first down [Applause] [Applause] they move leaport sending him in motion G going to throw here on First and 10 hit as he threw it the pass is incomplete think he just rushed that decision just a little bit downfield I mean it's one thing to trust your guy to make a play in tight coverage we see quarterbacks do that all the time but I think if he was a little bit more patient in his progression there was an easier throw out there that wouldn't make him have to throw such a tight window ball and put his receiver in a tight [Applause] spot throwing on second down gof to the right side that's St Brown and he'll Mark him down just shy of the 40 you can see this connection is just starting really to pick up they're seeing the game through the same set of eyes and that is the job of the receiver receiver what is my quarterback expecting from me where does he want me be there on time and it leads to Big gains like this on the handoff it's Montgomery and he'll get two on this one before being taken [Applause] down second down and eight [Applause] they'll stay on the ground again Montgomery and they'll have it across Midfield down at the opposing 46 yd line well this is something we don't see every day Mike a team playing with a traditional eye formation fullback it's kind of a lost start in today's modern game but in this case highly effective great job by the fullback clearing out the path for his running back and they're able to pick up the first down now the seconde man out of Alabama jir Gibbs and this defense not allowing much there they'll stop him at the [Applause] 45 here's a second and [Applause] knock they move leaport sending him in motion [Applause] he'll be forced to just throw that one away it's incomplete nice example there Mike of the quarterback just being smart with the ball understanding it didn't quite develop the way he had intended throw that ball out of Harm's Way live the play another down third and [Applause] none from the gun it's G he's got his tight end that's Le Porter that's his third catch of this first half and good enough for a first down I know I know I'm biased but listen you can't convince me Mike that there's a better option on the field especially when you got a guy like this then on third down or critical moments that's where the ball needs to go the size the speed the matchup problems that he creates if I was in a critical situation there is no doubt or I'm going with the ball he finds Raymond for the completion and he's close to another first down as he's brought down just shy of the marker here's second and two now G he's got it inside the five what a pick up a gain of 18 and it sets up first and goal I love the way the ball's been moving around to different guys this drive Mike I mean it really keeps the defense guessing and off balance and now this defense is going to have to figure out how to keep this offense out of the end zone because it's first and goal first and goal and here's Montgomery and he's going to go go backwards on that one they take him down back at the 6yd line I'd like to see that running back be a little bit more decisive with his cut Mike you can see he was a little hesitant and once you're late making that decision you just kind of get strong laterally great job there by the defense and he has no choice but to take that [Applause] loss G to throw to the end zone there but it is incomplete the Ty and Sam laapa the intended receiver and now they'll be looking at third and goal doesn't get much better than that had he gotten there just a little bit earlier he probably draws the flag a little late and it's probably a touchdown from the gun on third down it's gone and he'll take it on in halif Raymond touchdown Detroit and the show continues what a first happy he's had Greg a third touchdown pass with that one Mike what stood out to me the most so far is just the amount of space these guys have had to operate in I think if I'm this defensive coordinator me and my staff at halftime are revisiting this game plan they obviously felt good about it coming in but I don't think there's anything to feel good about thus [Applause] far an extra point ATT to [Applause] follow he gets it to go and the Lions have broken the deadlock as they move out to a 21- 14 lead [Applause] both teams ready to go once more as the kicks away this will be returned from the six good return here brings it up to the 33 yd line here come the Rams as their offense trots back onto the field they're searching here for the tying score down 2114 and they'll begin first and 10 the drive begins with a run by Williams and he'll get this to about the 36 yd line DJ reer as usual from that interior spot with the [Applause] play Cup in motion second down it's Stafford this one taken in by Parkinson and they'll whistle him down but not before he picks up a first down after a gain of seven this play is actually really well defended here but I'll tell you Mike as you know My Philosophy is the tight end is always open and this just supports my case oh a lot of chances on that one it was bouncing around but it falls incomplete was a fine line between trusting your arm and having a little bit too much faith in your arm right I think this is one of those situations here Mike where there was nowhere to go with the ball he tries to fit that one in there anyway and he's lucky that it just Falls incomplete now a second down throw for Stafford he'll be forc to just throw that one away it's incomplete you can't fault the quarterback on this one Mike he really didn't even have much of an opportunity by the time he hit the top of his drop and got his eyes down field the defense was all over him and he really had no choice but to just get that ball out of his hand and Live to play another snap throw on third down Stafford and that is incomplete Cooper cup was the intended receiver and it's going to be fourth down for the most part he's been very accurate with the ball he's completing over 60% of his passes but because they haven't been able to get any big explosive Place continue to push the ball down field hasn't really translated on the scoreboard just [Applause] yet Raymond going to return it and that is good coverage by the punt team and as they meet him and bring him down the Lions offense in their running back getting set for this next possession they lead by a touchdown as this drive begins with first and 10 [Applause] out of the shotgun it's G and this one is p in what a grab got the safe ground for a big one 32 yds Mike what we're seeing play out across the NFL is that if offensively it requires you to go the length of the field in a long methodical drive your chances of coming away with points continue to go down the more you snap the ball you have have to be able to generate shot plays pick up big explosive chunks cuz when you do your ability to score points typically tends to follow they move leaport sending him in motion on first down it's G they'll be forced to just throw that one away it's incomplete a rare Miss for a quarterback that we've seen really come out on fire throughout this entire contest I mean his completion percentage Mike is well above League average and frankly it's really the biggest reason why they find themselves out in front we'll try again it's second and 10 now Goff working fre downfield it is Williams a pick up of 14 on that one good for all Lions first down these Crossing concepts are frequently used Mike throughout the entire game all across the lead and what it does is it creates a lot of natural rubs you run out the backside of the defense and rely heavily on the yards after the catch and it's exactly how they're able to pick up this big game this pass complete to Raymond and he's close to another first down as he's brought down just shy of the marker similar to a tight end the slot receiver is often considered the safety blanket he makes all the difficult catches tends to be a little bit more around the line of scrimmage and so far today he's certainly lived up to that reputation on second down gump a very quick throw there but not on the same page with his Target that's incomplete even though it doesn't result in a sack when you dial up the right pressure at the right time Mike sometimes that's all it takes to lead to that incompletion the timing is just a little off between the quarterback and his intended target and the ball Falls incomplete they'll try and run it here with Montgomery well we have an early decision here Mike how aggressive does this coach want to be on this fourth down try I think you got to keep your offense out there you have a prime opportunity to take the fight to him extend this drive and hopefully be able to come away with [Applause] points the field goal unit on the sideline they'll line up to go for it on fourth down they'll go for it here's gof he'll get this one complete to Safe Brown It's a pick up of 12 as they wind up converting on fourth down on the move at the 14 yd line it's first and 10 here's a hand off to Montgomery and a nice run there he'll be stopped just shy of a first down a pickup of nine when the offense broke the Huddle in a line Mike I think everybody in the stadium knew this was going to be a run but the offense is kind of saying okay lineup I dare you to try to stop us and right now this defense has no [Applause] answers a second down throw for gof it is brought in in the end zone Damon Williams touchdown ran that's his second touchdown so far here in the first half and that is number two Greg he is off to some kind of start in this one two quarters and two receiving touchdowns Mike this is one of those situations where as a defensive coordinator you've got to give your group and answer cuz right now they don't have one for this guy extra point attempt to come here he's got it and the Lions have doubled their advantage it is now a 28-4 game [Applause] [Applause] [Music] the kickoff team is out on the field and we're back to it as the kicks away from the six here comes a return and he'll be brought down just beyond the 25 yd line Matthew Stafford and the Rams offense getting set to go again and he's had things all his way in the first half those numbers are Sensational he looks to add to him with another drive here first and 10 no Kua snags it over the middle and they'll bring him down but not until he gets to the 38 yd line do a nice job there to move the chains early in this drive but now as they approach Midfield continue to keep your foot on the gas don't get conservative don't start sitting on the ball cross Midfield and go anytime you find yourself on your opponent's side of the field you have to be thinking points throw left side but that's going to be in complete timing and Trust critical elements of this quick passing game if your Target and the quarterback are not on the same page it winds up being an incompletion and a wasted down they'll try again here second and 10 a shotgun snapped to Stafford this one caught by Parkinson well he's brought down that pass is going to pick up four and bring up third down you can see the eyes of the quarterback he's trying to push this ball initially downfield but with the defense doing a good job keeping a lid on the coverage he's forced to check this ball down to the shallow route but this is something that they know in the future if I need a couple yards they can come back to this play this one complete to Atwell he's going to have the first down so they convert on third down with a pick up of [Applause] [Applause] nine tight end the motion man to the right they'll throw once more here's Stafford he'll be taken down rather swiftly after a gain of just three it's not the big play they were hoping for but first down efficiency staying ahead of the chains is what every offense is trying to find and it brings up a manageable second down they're going to motion the tight end over here to the air again Stafford and they'll take this down inside the 35 there's this misconception out there Mike that in the NFL you have to run the same amount of run plays as you do pass plays everyone talks about being balanced but as you're seeing in this drive you can fall on one side of that coin a little bit more as long as you're able to remain effective and efficient so far their passing game has dominated here early and that last pickup leads to a first down and deep for the back of the end zone so I like the aggressiveness of the call but as the rest of the game unfolds Mike there needs to be better overall execution little bit cleaner next thing you know they're going to hit some of those big shots out of the shotgun they give it to Williams he'll be stopped after a short game to about the 30 Jack Campbell the former first round pick there to wrap him up 21 is the line to gain as we hit third down Atwell s in motion here a play fake now now Stafford to throw and he will get into the end zone 2 two Atwell touchdown La you know there's so many key factors that allow a play like this mike to have so much success and of course like anything it starts with the quarterback being accurate it's such a big part of NFL football right now is the run after the catch but the accuracy of the ball allows the receiver to turn into a runner after securing the catch so great job there by the quarterback and then sometimes it's just a foot race to the pylon and speed kills and wide receiver gets the ball secures it and he does the rest on comes Joshua cardi for the extra point it's up and through and the Rams are back to within seven it's 2821 both teams ready to go once more as the kicks away [Applause] Reynolds now on the return he'll get this up to the 28 yd line nice place for the drive to start the Lions offense and Jared G set to go to work once more and he has done everything you could ask of him coming into this one he spread it around hasn't taken many chances and potentially on his way to a big game throwing the football [Applause] they'll break the Huddle coming up now for first and [Applause] 10 they'll run to the right with Montgomery and he tries to get back to the line of scrimmage but will not happen here think he's going to lose a yard well they try to get the Run game started here early on this drive Mike and they're just going to have to do a better job up front there's really nowhere for this ball carrier to go you never want to lose yards on first down but that's exactly the case here on second down Montgomery he'll pop this ahead for about four but it will set up third [Applause] down so two minutes to play in a back and fourth first half Greg and I back from Ford Field in Detroit in in a moment [Applause] G that's over the middle taken in by Lea and he puts his head down and he picks up the first down well nothing real fancy here Mike not a huge pickup but anytime on third down you got to know where the sticks are who's your most reliable player and I think everybody in this booth knows exactly what position that is [Applause] they'll come up first and 10 at the [Applause] 40 throwing Here Is Gone fires quickly it is complete on the slam and they'll have it across Midfield down at the opposing 46 yd line and now you can see they're really getting in rhythm in this two-minute drive now after that last completion Mike they cross Midfield now the mindset goes to all right we got to come away with some points they've got a quarterback who's in complete control and they got to see if they can finish this thing off and he's brought down after a gain of six on first down following the completion we'll get a stoppage here for an injured player halime is looming so the athletic training staff to get a chance to look him over during the break [Applause] they'll come up now for second down and four to throw is G here's a screen set up for GBS and that's going to be a first down a pickup of nine [Applause] from the gun it's Goff he's going to let this one go for Raymond so of course you prefer to connect on that throw but think about it like this Mike the more they continue to test this defense down field the more it's going to open up some of those shorter passes [Applause] underneath throwing on second down Goff the ball deflected at least a couple of times but it'll fall to the ground it's incomplete he was looking for jir Gibbs out of the back field now it's going to be third down throwing G and on third down that ball incomplete great pass rushers live for third down especially when they know the offense has to be one-dimensional and this is a great example here Mike they can just pin their ears back and go they know there is no threat for run it is a must pass situation and for this offense they're lucky it didn't result in a sack good snap good hold good kick and the Lions going to tack on three more extending the lead here late in the first half [Applause] [Applause] they didn't leave much time on the clock to put together a drive here at the end of the first half and the kickoffs coming their way Johnson now to return and he'll be brought down past the 25 decent field position to start this drive Rams offense going to get it one final time in this first half but deficit is at 10 so an important Drive forthcoming getting started with first and [Applause] 10 they'll start this one with a three tight end look and they're just going to run it here up the middle and this is going to be a Rams first down as the tackles made at about the 38 yd line [Applause] from the gun here's Stafford quick throw here is complete and they bring him down but not until he crosses [Applause] [Applause] Midfield so they come to the line for first down and [Applause] 10 working out of the gun Stafford who Els another catch for his favorite Target and that keeps him ahead of schedule that's a first down completion of seven yds here's a second and three fourth coming to throw is Stafford he'll take a shot here back of the end zone that's going to be incomplete they took a shot on the final Play Prayer not answered and that is how this first half will come to an end all right Michael thanks very much as we welcome you you into our downtown Orlando studios and the EA Sports halftime report in the first half it was the veteran quarterback Jared gof who had command of the offense he had it going right away two touchdown passes in the first quarter two more in the second four touchdown passes all told and he's likely not done yet Coach thank you not a rest at the break for the defensive coordinators trying to figure out how to stop these offenses at as we get ready for the second half third quarter set to commence and we're back underway here on EA Sports now return coming from the seven now an opening pass the 30 oh very good field position to start as the return is past the 40th Kiren will Willam and the Rams offense ready to get back to work they'll have very good starting field position as they set up past the [Applause] 40 quick throw taken in that's a nice pick up on a first down throw it's a gain of [Applause] eight they'll come to the line now on second and two off the bootleg it's Stafford he gets it into the hands of thatw and that's a first down it will be a gain of eight you can just see the frustration of the defender you see him get off the quarterback he's like man hold that ball for one tick longer man I'm there to record the sack nice job by the quarterback having that timing and Rhythm to get that ball out of his hand you can imagine he got close this time that Defender he's going to keep coming and don't be surprised if he eventually gets to him and he's not going to get too far tackle after a gain of just a yard here's second and [Applause] nine Cup in motion on the give it's Williams and he nearly got free but as it is gain of six and it sets up third down out of the gun Stafford open man right side he's got it and they are in great shape he's taken down inside the 10 big time conversion there on third down finding yourself trailing at the moment the last thing you want to do is waste this promising possession now with that throw they find themselves deep in their opponent's territory they have to come away with the touchdown to try to cut into this deficit well a chance to get right back in it here first down and goal Cup in motion here's a run and and they are all over that on defense good surch drops him back let's put him at the 9yd line where a Defender makes his tackles tells you a lot about his abilities and for an interior defensive lineman Mike to make plays on the outside of the formation just speaks to his speed his effort his ability to run down the line and we saw it here and he takes the back down for a loss Stafford now on second down that's to the end zone but it's in goes without saying like you have to be smart with the ball especially down here in the Red Zone you're already in scoring position I understand they're trying to come away with a touchdown but at the very least Come Away with three worst case scenario is you turn the ball over and you come away with nothing now Stafford on Third and goal he pulls it in around the five and he'll get this inside inside the five but no further great job by the defense it sets up fourth down I think this one of those plays that when the ball carrier watches this back in the film room tomorrow he's going to be a little frustrated with himself if he could just have made that one guy Miss he picks up the first down instead he gets brought down short of the sticks and now they got a fourth down decision to make Hardy's kick is good and the Rams are able to get it back within a score yeah he does a nice job handling that kick there but I think offensively you come back to the sideline and you're thinking we have to find a way to finish these drives I mean to be in first and goal and settle for three that can be very deflating for an offense settling for too many field goals the kickoff team is out on the field and we're back to it as the kicks away to return it's khil dorsy he'll work his way across the 25 yd line the home team's offense and their quarterback set to take the field once more and he's been as good as advertised take you through some of the highlights four touchdown passes on point with his receivers right throughout and continuing to master running and executing the this [Applause] [Applause] offense set to go now on First and 10 they'll bring St Brown in motion they'll go play action with gof that's a short one caught by leapa this pitch and catch may have looked routine but I promise you Mike these types of anticipatory throws especially outside the numbers they don't occur without countless reps often times when nobody's even watching second and a [Applause] yard a carry here for Montgomery and he's going to be brought down up past the 45 pretty much just more of the same from what we saw with this back in the first half and he doesn't need much he gets a little bit of space and then he can create the rest it's the combination of patience vision and then the burst to hit the hole once he sees it this guy's been a handful all day one more time for Montgomery and he finds his space tackled after a gain of seven on first down [Applause] here's second and three to [Applause] go they move leaport sending him in motion on second down gof down the field he's got sefe round and they're going to move this ball inside the 25 yard line now so far here today putting points on the board certainly hasn't been a problem and plays like that are wide think about it Mike sometimes you just have to take what the defense gives you and not force something that's not there and that mid-range pass results in a fresh set of downs they move leaport sending him in motion he'll find Montgomery out of the back field this is a great example Mike of playing zone defense at a high level they're trying to threaten him they're trying to put two guys in his Zone and see which guy he's going to choose in this case they try to out leverage him into the flat he's not having it he brings him down for no [Applause] game a second down throw for gof oh and this one's going to wind up incomplete that's one you'd think he'd be able to Coral he can't find the handle and it's going to lead to a third down so the receiver does everything right except for the most important part he runs a nice route great great separation downfield but now you just got to finish that thing off with a catch they move leaport sending him in motion off the play fake here's G oh the blitz overwhelming the offensive line and down he goes when you can bring cornerbacks on pressure man that changes everything for the defensive play caller offenses spend all week worrying about linebackers defensive lineman how are they going to protect the quarterback but when you can time up a secondary pressure like this man often times there's no answer for it [Applause] Dan Campbell will opt to bring out the field goal unit this one from just under 50 yds he is two for two that kick is good and the lions will extend their lead and this is what you want I mean you clearly have the advantage but you want to continue to apply pressure can you score every time you get the ball they're able to do that here they tack on free and extend their lead [Applause] [Music] both teams ready to go once more as the kicks away he'll start at the four and he'll be brought down just beyond the 25 yd line the Rams offense and Matthew St heading back onto the field and he has been a nightmare to scheme against throughout this one this defense has been picked apart that is born out in those impressive numbers he has been terrific all game [Applause] long here's first and [Applause] 10 on play action it's Stafford that is caught downfield by C and he's down inside the 40 yd line everyone talks about all the physical qualities to play quarterback in the NFL Mike and of course that's a given but it's really the cerebral approach to the game that separates the best from everybody else and I think both of those things were on display there as he did not only a great job of finding the vulnerabilities of the back end but then once his guy was was there it was that arm talent that put the ball in the exact right spot to allow his guy to make the big Play here's a handoff to Williams and he's brought down after a gain of [Applause] accomplish they'll come up on a second down and eight a shotgun snapped to Stafford finds MCA on the slant and they'll work this close to a first down maybe just a tad short don't need much it is third and Ines he'll try to run for it with Williams and nothing on that one back to the line of scrimmage and that is it you could just see the frustration on the running back's face as he's getting helped up off the ground Mike there was just nowhere to go from the moment he was handed the ball give credit to the defense great job they only need a yard and it's Fourth Down Stafford to throw it he'll look middle and he's got his man complete and he's going to have a Rams first down they find a way to convert on Fourth and 10 whatever they've talked about in the locker room at the halftime break seems to have worked they've come out with a new established energy you could see it when they took the field now this offense seems to be building on it because chunk play just a little bit of Rhythm that they can build off of they got a long way to go to get back into this game but so far off to a good start taking on Defenders plowing forward a pick up of five this just shows why you can't count on just one guy to take him down he's a powerful enough Runner you got to have guys coming in support when that first hit is made it takes a team effort to stop him especially once he gets going second down it's Stafford Nua snags it over the middle and this drive is going to continue he's taken down but they are set up with first and goal these are the type of plays that drive a coach crazy in the film room and you have to learn as a quarterback to avoid you can take some chances you can push the ball down field but not only to pick up a couple yards you got to pick your chances of when you want to be aggressive and that is Hot In The End Zone he's in Cooper up touchdown Los Angeles that his second touchdown tonight that is yet another touchdown pass what a game he is having throwing his fourth touchdown score of the game it's one thing Mike to throw four touchdowns but it's really the ease in which he's carved this defense up that has stood out the most the defense has had no answers for this passing game and he has just completely had his way with this group cardi now to add the extra point the kick is good and the Rams are back within a field goal the lead is three the kickoff team is out on the field and we're back to it as the kicks away to return it it's dorsy and he'll work this one past the 25 to right about the 28 yard line the home team's offense and their running back set to go once more and as you take a look at the numbers you have to imagine he was the topic of conversation in that locker room at halftime they got to find a way to slow him down nothing they've done has worked so [Applause] far a fresh set of downs to work with it is first down and 10 out of the shot go it's G he's got leapa open on the left side and he'll be brought down but not before they get this all the way up near Midfield well any fear they might have had that they'd come out of the halftime break flat has completely gone out the window immediately back in the attack mode continuing to take the fight to the defense they're not content Mike here is just having the lead they're looking to extend it couple more plays like that they're going to find them eles in scoring territory and that'll be intercepted by travius White and the Rams are going to take over once again at their 37 yd line you know Mike anytime a team can go nickel or dime and come off the field with an interception I just am constantly reminded of the importance of defensive back depth when you're building an NFL roster I mean think back this is not the old NFL base 34 base 43 offenses are going to roll out 2 3 four highlevel wide receivers at you in this past first modern era if you can't roll out five DBS and all of them hold their own and be trusted to hold up you are going to struggle defending these pass first modern offenses ball rests at the 37 it's first and [Applause] 10 from the shotgun it's Stafford and he'll be brought down just shy of [Applause] Midfield a give and here comes Williams and he'll move this ahead for about four yds Campbell the former first round pick there to wrap him up here's a second and six from the gun here's Stafford there's Batman again another catch here's a third down and four working out of the gun Stafford and they're going to get to him and take him down taking back to the other side of Midfield through the first half it was clear this pass ction this offensive line unit they were clearly up for the challenge the pass rush was non-existent but here in the second half you can sense a little bit more urgency you can see them start playing with a little more speed and intensity and it pays off there with their first sack of the day the Rams punting unit coming out he's on for the second time they'll try to get something inside the 10 and no return forthcoming it's a Touchback and will come out to the 20 yd line the home team's offense and they're running back getting ready to go back to work and you have to imagine the defense is saying how do we stop this guy he has run rough shot through him to this point in the third [Applause] quarter the drive begins at the 20 here's first and 10 [Applause] they move leaport sending him in [Music] motion it is caught left side by St Brown nice gain here he's going to be marked down at the 35 yd line this may look like a simple connection Mike just pitch and catch but I can promise you the amount of time these two guys have spent together on the practice field in the meeting rooms just getting on the same page seeing the game through the same set of eyes it makes what's pretty difficult seem a lot easier GF with the give to Montgomery what more could you ask for on first down nice run of eight setting up second and short [Applause] here's gof the pass rush gets home and he goes down as a cornerback you're only going to get so many of these chances each game to make plays in the back field and so far this guy continues to take advantage of them that's two sacks so far and with the way this game was going I wouldn't be surprised to see another [Applause] Here Comes third and [Applause] six from the gun it's C he'll get this one complete to Safe Brown he's got a touchdown on the books from earlier and that catch gets a first down these hitch routes they're usually just designed to pick up a few safe yards an easy completion get some Rhythm for your quarterback however this time he's able to make a little magic happen after the catch and turn it into something much bigger than even they were probably anticipating that's out to the flat and it's complete and they'll get about half of what they needed it's a pick up of five and sets up second and five all right so there's really three areas that a modern NFL running back has to excel at number one the traditional handoffs yes you have to operate out of the back field like a traditional running back number two you have to be excellent and reliable in pass protection and maybe bigger than all of them you have to be at least serviceable out of the back field in the passing and they'll move this one down inside the 40 yd line well if it ain't broke don't fix it they clearly have a mismatch in their favor and every time they've looked his way he's continued to make big plays if I'm this coordinator I think I'm giving him one more shot and see if he can push this thing over the goal line and Come Away with six they move leaport sending him in motion now Montgomery and he'll take this forward for about three it's second down [Applause] on play action gof that is brought in at the 10 and he's going to be taken down he had two touchdowns earlier looking to see what he can do here in this second half that grab gets them a first down so no shortage of offense in this one as we end the third and Sunday Night Football continues after this so not quite first and goal it's first and 10 they're pretty [Applause] close here's Montgomery and he's going to be stopped in his track tracks he lose a couple of yards on that one at this stage in the fourth quarter great job by the defense understanding exactly what the offense is trying to do they're trying to bleed the clock shorten the game they completely sold out to stop the run able to take him down for a loss last play went the wrong way it sets up second along it's second down and 12 that's hauled in at the two and he's into the end zone that might be the not out punch David Montgomery touchdown Detroit everything you want to do right there Greg in the fourth quarter get the ball with the lead and extend it to a two-score Advantage yeah and I think this just might end up being too much to overcome you said it once you get a two-score lead this late in the fourth quarter there's just not enough possessions to be had to claw yourself back in [Applause] it point after coming up [Applause] here he knocks it through and the lions will open it up even further here in this fourth quarter both teams ready to go once more as the kicks away Johnson now to [Applause] return he's across the 20 taken down just shy of the 25 the visitors offense and their quarterback headed out for their next possession and this defense might be about ready to wave the White Flag nothing they have tried to throw at him has been successful he just processes things so quickly making the right read seemingly every time so here's a first and 10 now they'll start from the 24 out of the gun Stafford and that one knocked away it's incomplete to sa football as a game of inches may be an understatement after that last play I mean if he gets there just a little bit quicker he can get two hands on it and reel it in instead of just forcing the incomplete he could have had himself a pick he'll try again here second and [Applause] 10 here's Stafford and he will not get away terrific open field tackle gets him down behind the line to play Corner in this league Mike you have to have great reactions and instincts in this case he trusts those instincts from the jump and he's able to send the offense going backwards as a result third and [Applause] long they'll keep it on the ground H Team headed out for the RS a fair catch signal and they'll have it just outside their own 20 that's Alan ra St Brown and the rest of the Detroit offense heading out for their next possession and he's looking to finish strong he has been unquestionably the star of the show as they have just absolutely had no answer on the defensive side of the ball first and 10 now gof and he can't hang on through the contact it's incomplete what a good job defensively to meet him just as the ball was arriving and it'll be second down really nice job there by the defense defending the middle of the field that is the most valuable real estate on the field they know every single offense is trying to attack the defense between the hashes so give credit they took away all the throwing lanes and that ball Falls incomplete and they'll work this close to a first down maybe just a tad [Applause] short this would go a long way to sealing this one third and a yard they'll run with [Applause] Montgomery here's the Lions punt team now as they try to play the field position game here protecting a fourth quarter [Applause] lead and that's a nice job of getting to him making sure that return was not going anywhere the Rams offense getting those helmets back on ready to head out for their next possession they'll start it here with a first and 10 now it's Stafford who else another catch for his favorite Target and he's going to be brought down up past the 45 and this is a tricky part of the game for any defense you find yourself protecting a late lead and the age-old question is do you remain aggressive do you try to just keep the ball from being thrown over your head and make everything be tackled and played in front of you that's what every defensive coordinator struggles with so they can't get too soft here as they try to hold on to this lead here late and they're going to work this down inside the 45 well as you can see on this run this is a back who is not going to shy away from contact he actually welcomes it his ability to run through contact break tackles and still have the speed and burst to pick up this big yards they'll come up here first and 10 on the play fake here's Stafford [Applause] here's second and [Applause] six the motion man is NCA now a second down throw for Stafford they try to set up the screen but this one doomed from the start it's incomplete just seems like another case of predetermining where the quarterback is going to go with the ball he had a lot of good route options on that last concept I I think if he just remains a little bit more patient read the play out let it unfold will lead to some easier and better completions the motion man is ncua throw it on third down Stafford pass is completed to cup he's going to have the first down so they convert on third down with a pickup of Nine the drag route is certainly not the most complicated route on the route tree but a really nice job there using the scheme to create separation he did a really nice job there working across the middle of the field as he made himself [Applause] open Cup in motion on first down Stafford and he got rid of that one quickly before the receiver even knew what was going on that's incomplete up until that incompletion they've done a really nice job on this drive Mike picking up fresh sets of downs and typically throwing the ball on first down is a great way to do it it's actually the easiest down in football to operate in but now they find themselves in second and 10 do you keep it in the air and try to get the first down here or is the idea to just make third down manageable and take your chances picking up a key third down throwing again Stafford that'll be caught by the running back Williams and they'll get about eight out of that one but still little work to do now on third down there's a lot of ways to get the ball in the hands of your running backs and it's not always by just handing it to them in this case it's a simple check down picks up a good gain brings up third down now a third and two they'll run here and they get it at the 18 yd line the drive stays alive first down picked up nothing real fancy about this call here Mike right in this third and short just get the ball to your running back make sure he has enough space to pick up the first down and they're able to convert so they move inside the 20 first and 10 at the 18 the shotgun snapped to Stafford he gets it into the hands of Atwell and he will score game on 2 two Atwell touchdown Rams he's got another one his second touchdown of the evening Greg they are pecking away at this one now very big touchdown gets them right Within Reach of pulling this comeback off well Mike at the very least they've given themselves a chance but can they get a stop and get the ball back again for a chance to go down and really make this one interesting the kick is good important extra point the difference is just three a field goal here in the fourth quarter [Applause] so they've cut into the lead now just a field goal behind as they kick it up Reynolds now on the return and he's brought down right at the 25 yd line the Lions offense and receiver ran Ross St Brown set for this next possession and he's had some kind of game they made it a point to get him involved early boy did that pay great dividends to this [Applause] point from the 25 they'll go to work first and [Applause] 10 the motion man is Raymond gof going to throw here on First and 10 quick slap CAU by St Brown and he's going to get this to the 37 yd line a lot could go wrong anytime you decide to put the ball in the air here late in the fourth quarter as you're trying to run out the clock and protect this lead but at the same time I like that they haven't gone super concerned just hand off right hand off left and it just turns into tackling practice so I like the balance of making the defense defend everything cuz right now possess the ball protect the ball and ultimately just run the clock out they'll work now on second and four throwing gof a ball deep for the end zone and he's into the end zone yet again Jam Williams touchdown Lian his big night continues his third touchdown of the game so add another touchdown and touchdown pass for that matter he has thrown six already in this one amazing stuff [Applause] now the extra [Applause] point he's got it and the lions are able to extend the lead [Applause] [Music] [Music] the kickoff team is out on the field and we're back to it as the kicks away this will be returned from the six and it'll be brought down past the 25 decent field position to start this drive PUK and AA and this Rams offense come back onto the field will'll try to establish some tempo as they start this one with first and 10 [Applause] back to throw Stafford this one caught by Parkinson and they'll get about half of what they needed it's a pick up of five and sets up second and five [Applause] now Stafford looking to set up the screen there but he decides not to force it and it's incomplete I know this play results in an incomplete pass but I think this is a really good job by the quarterback his clock was going off he felt that Rush he had no immediate Target to go to with the ball instead throw it away don't take the sack live for another day the motion man is NCA Stafford now on third down unloads downfield looking for NCA that is incomplete well read that time defensively making a difficult downfield and that's going to bring up a fourth down nothing scarier for a quarterback Mike than just seeing that ball popped up in the air it feels like that ball is in the air for an eternity and all you hope is that it just harmlessly falls to the ground and fortunately for the offense that's exactly what it did he'll look middle he's got his man complete and he's going to have the Rams first down it'll have it by a lot it turns out to be a big gor on fourth down some teams just have a stronger appetite for being willing to go for fourth down tries even on their side of the field Mike and we're seeing it so much more often the days of just punting the ball back and forth and saying hey we're going to play good defense remember the better your defense that doesn't mean you should punt the better your defense the more chances you should take on offense off play action it's Stafford and he can't hang on through the contact it's incomplete what a good job defensively to meet him just as the ball was arriving and it'll be second down they nearly connected on the big play downfield but he's not quite able to hold on to that ball through the contact you can chalk that one up as a win defensively they'll throw once more here's Stafford and a good effort there defensively it's knocked away and incomplete nice job there by the defender he's able to break up the pass but I think if he's able to get there just a little bit sooner now you can get two hands on the ball and give yourself a chance to come down with an even bigger play and Come Away with the [Applause] pick Stafford to throw again it's complete he's got C and they're going to be set up in the Red Zone they've got it inside the 15 if you want to score points at a high level in the NFL you have to generate explosive plays and after that big chunk pass play they find themselves now down there in the red zone and this is where you have to finish [Applause] drives down at the 12 it's first and [Applause] 10 to the air again Stafford and he can't hang on through the contact it's incomplete what a good job defensively to meet him just as the ball was arriving and it'll be second down they couldn't quite connect there on that short pass Mike and I just think it's worth reminding everyone how different the concepts are down here in the Red Zone than what the rest of the game plan calls for in the normal part of the field off the bootleg it's Stafford he'll be forced to just throw that one away it's incomplete at this level you just would expect a little bit better execution and accuracy on those intermediate throws think he had an opportunity there for a nice pickup off Target off Rhythm ends up getting away from [Applause] him again it's Stafford that's to the end zone but they can't connect it's incomplete I like the idea of taking your shot there on third down pushing the ball down field looking for the touchdown but now as it brings up fourth down you're already this close you're in field goal range but do you keep that offense on the field and try to maintain possession and see if you can come away with [Applause] six and this one right down the middle it's good and they are indeed back within one score it's always a little bit of a let down Mike you find yourself deep in the red zone and you have to just settle for a short field goal like that in this case he's able to put it through and they get three so the field goal makes it a onore game here in the fourth quarter as they kick it away Reynolds now on the return and he'll be taken down right at the 29 yd line so Jared G and the Lions offense getting set for this next drive and he has been masterful so far leading this offense keeping the mistakes to a minimum on point with his passes generally one step ahead of the defense all game long they'll break the Huddle coming up now for first and 10 they move leaport sending him in motion on play action and the rush too strong they're in there in a Flash for the sack if they win this game this pass rush is going to be a big reason why the five sacks speak for itself but their ability to disrupt the timing of this offense that can't be overstated [Applause] work to do now as they come up on second and long Williams in motion on second down G quick slant taken in by Alro well that helps going to be a much more manageable third down getting some good yardage on that second down play after that first down sack I think we both kind of looked at each other and said all right well there goes this drive but a really nice job there in the passing game on second down that big chunk brings them from second and long to now at least third and manageable they move leaport sending him in motion off the play fake here's G oh no chance there under a heavy Rush he goes down so after surrendering their sixth sack of the game I looked down on the sideline Mike and found their our offensive line coach he grabbed his headset removed it and he slammed it on the ground and truthfully I don't blame him his unit has been getting worked up front all day in pass [Applause] protection the Lions will punt this ball away to return is Williams and he'll be brought down short return and they'll take over there here comes Cooper Cup and the rest of the LA offense set for this next Rams possession they Trail here by a touchdown as this drive will start with a first down back to throw is Stafford looking middle and complete with Allen and they will bring him down on the other side of Midfield well the run after catch is certainly nice and they're definitely going to take it but watch the savviness of the route running certain guys just have a better field for running these slant routes than others and it's a nice result they'll fake the hand off now Stafford and this one is pulled in what a grab and they're going to be set up in the Red Zone they've got it inside the 15 this is pretty high level quarterback play right here he knew before the snap all he had to do is manipulate one Defender with his eyes and once he bit ball comes out on the money big pickup they can still get a first down at the one first and 10 they go from the 11 who else another catch for his favorite Target and they'll get about half of what they needed it's a pick up of five and sets up second and five and that's going to do it with that last throw he surpasses Norm van brockland most passing yards ever in a game van brockland at 554 over 70 years ago 1951 help from The oine Help from the receivers an incredible performance an NFL record set here Stafford now on second down he'll swing this one out wide to his running back and a good job rallying to the football hold him just a gain of a yard and sets up third down down defensive coordinators preach all the time play past defense with vision it's exactly the case here they're able to Rally to the ball keep that to a short game time now becoming a factor as we get the third down from the gun here's Stafford and this is too far over the end line it's incomplete that's one he'd love to have back an opportunity to score six was right there for the taking just wasn't quite meant to be got to have it fourth and four they'll snap it here's Stafford to the goal line and in Huka nakua touchdown La a huge touchdown there in the fourth quarter and now just a point away from tying the game and that's one of those drives Mike where you know your best is needed can you come through here late and give your team a chance they're an extra point away from tying this thing up and we got ourselves a ball game so they're not level yet a critical extrao attempt to follow the kick is good and that will tie this game here in the fourth quarter all even fourth quarter everything we've wanted what's in store in the remaining [Applause] time he'll work his way across the 25 yd line the Lions offense and their quarterback ready to go once more and you get a look at the numbers they don't even tell the whole story this has been a tremendous performance to this [Applause] point here's first [Applause] down they move leaport sending him in motion they'll stick to the ground and he'll be taken down as the clock kicks towards two minutes to [Applause] play so two minutes left to play in the second half Greg and I back for the conclusion in a moment here's a second and three fourth coming they'll drop to throw over the middle he's got sa Brown and that's going to be a first down a pick up of [Applause] nine from the gun it's to he'll be forced to just throw that one away it's incomplete all right so this is why you get paid the big bucks these are the possessions as a quarterback you need to deliver for your team everybody talks about two minute everybody drills it every single week but when it comes down to this moment in the game your quarterback needs to be on point and after that first down incompletion it just makes things that much harder into the hands of Brock Wright and he'll be marked down down at the 45 yd line so the hope is when you call these underneath drag routes you're trying to have your tight end come out the backside of the defense in space so when you put the ball on them early it leads to Big yards after the catch in this case they don't get the real big play they were hoping for but they'll definitely take it catches made by wri defense does a nice job here initially using Zone coverage to take away the middle of the field that's the most valuable real estate in football quarterback gets off his first read sees some openings to the sideline and him and his receiver are able to [Applause] connect Montgomery and that one shut down pretty quickly he'll get back to the line of scrimmage nothing more [Applause] needing to convert here on Third and [Applause] inches they'll run now a timeout Rams that's number two buck is stopped 55 seconds remaining here in the game [Applause] they still have all three timeouts and here we go with first and [Applause] 10 here's Gibbs he'll be taken down after a gain of two the Rams use their third and final timeout to get the stoppage with just over 50 seconds to go in this [Applause] one second down eight for the first [Applause] down on the handoff it's Montgomery and the lions are going to have a first and goal coming up they try to finish off this drive with six points it's been a really nice drive they've been able to put together Mike and I think the key word is balance not having to rely too heavily on either the run or the pass continue to mix it up going back and forth keep the defense off balance lot of success first and goal and here's Montgomery to the 5 yd line [Applause] so now a big spot coming here this to win the game the lions called their first timeout [Applause] so now out comes the field goal unit in this pressure spot this one he's got to have this kick is good and it's celebration time a walkoff victory on the game's final play so
