New York Giants Sign OT Matt Nelson And Bring Back WR Isaiah Hodgins | NFL Free Agency

[Music] what's up GI fans back at it with another video and in this video I want to talk about another three that the Giants have brought in big blue and talk about some internal moves within the YouTube at Big Blue Avenue love all of our fans so biggest news is the Giants bringing in a new offensive tackle Matt Nelson from the Detroit Lions After Five Seasons with them Nelson served as a backup tackle for Detroit the last few seasons um he came in to visit with the Giants on Wednesday signs the contract on Thursday the Giants have now added five new offensive linemen in this free agency period Nelson being the latest and Nelson is the first true swing tackle that the Giants have brought in you know a lot of people said Germaine illuminar is one um I do agree with that but I think he'll likely be starting at the right tackle position so the Giants need a backup and I think Nelson is definitely the guy for that role um you know because Evan Neil might kick into guard so it is important to because the Giants did lose Matt per to the Denver Broncos coming off his rookie contract Giants did not want want to bring him back due to his injury history and not really developing with big blue um Ty Phillips they lost to the season ending injury unfortunately last season you know the Giants need a vet out there and Nelson at 28 years old um has made a solid career for himself thus far as an undrafted free agent back in 2019 uh this past season he played in just three games but did have two starts no sacks allowed his pass blocking efficiency was sixth among t Les but deceiving number that is a very small sample size um he did miss some time with an ankle injury this past season he had surgery on it but what I like about Nelson his size his wingspan his long arms he doesn't have those you know little alligator arms he is 6'7 315 PBS 2021 he had 11 starts played in 13 games played 78% of the snaps that year uh gave up three sacks and 34 pressures 2020 he also had a start playing in 16 games and one thing to note here about Nelson too 9910 of his 171 career snaps have come in at right tackle so that is huge for the New York Giants so Matt Nelson joins John Ron Jr Jermaine leminar uh Aaron stinny and Austin schlotman as the fifth newest Giants offensive lineman which is crazy to say um also folks do want to apologize I know some issues on the last video with the video so if anything comes up definitely let me know um Giants I mentioned Matt per leaving for the Broncos Jihad ward has also left for the Minnesota Vikings at five sacks last season but two guys the Giants did bring back first quarterback dney Holmes back on a one-year deal you know coming off his rookie contract he didn't have any interest in leaving the team a 2020 fourth round pick he took a pace cut last year and lost his role on defense typically when that happens you see guys leave not the case here he didn't complain he became a solid special teams contributor he is the consumate team player in four years 11 starts in 54 games four interceptions 115 tackles 18 passes defended and two of those four picks did come last season so he still had somewhat of a role even though it was very diminished in other news this one a little bit surprised the Giants did not tender Isaiah hodin I thought he would test the open market and not return but report of the Giants have agreed to terms with hajin to come back pending a physical this is a huge signing and this is another context clue to me that Daniel Jones will be the starter in 2024 uh trying to run it back with the team that you know they had in 2022 I still think this doesn't change their plans in the draft as far as drafting a number one wide receiver at six overall but Hodgins played in all 17 games last year nine starts he had three touchdown receptions he did only play 46% of the offensive snaps so to get three touchdowns in that number is pretty impressive um this guy was a quavered off Quavers from the bills by the Giants in 2022 so you know fifth year guy now entering his third year with the team he is a touchdown maker that's what he's been he's made winning plays get a touchdown in that playoff game against the Vikings seven career touchdowns 58 catches he works the sidelines very well solid possession receiver tiptoes nicely 63 200lb build I'm happy he's back and now the receiver room is as follows you got Darius Slayton you got Jaylen hayatt juandale Robinson Isaiah McKenzie Isaiah Hodgins um gunar olesky and Bryce Ford weaton those are the seven and the likely draft a receiver making it eight bodies that could legitimately compete for a roster spot we Paris kampbell recently signed with the Eagles and he was a not a good sign but I'm happy hodin is back I'm happy the Giants got a true swing tackle um or backup tackle I should say in case Andrew Thomas or illuminar or Neil goes down so depth is the purpose of this video the Giants have gone out to acquire that in free agency
