S2 | E29 Coleman Proctor, John Douch, Roy Cooper, Cinch Playoffs

[Music] it is time for the one and only the premere the only official podcast of pro rodeo your shoot bosses are ready so let's give it a go and talk some [Music] [Applause] Rodeo hello everyone and welcome into another exciting episode of the shoot bosses the official podcast of parodo Tanner bar Tracy rink here we're past the first weekend of September Tracy and uh things are winding down I'm excited the top 15's getting Tighter and Tighter and you know almost every event there's races we're watching and you know a lot to unfold here over the final three weeks of September yeah there's just so many big rodeos coming up obviously the people that qualified from palop to go to sou Falls it's a huge Rodeo the end the season there's a huge rodeo in Mandan there's just different rodeos the guys are going to try to hit to try to meet their count I it's going to be a fight to the Finish I just can't remember and I know it sounds cliche with so many guys being so tight from like 10 to 17 yeah uh usually it starts fading 12 to 1 or 12 yeah 13 to 17 usually it's like the back three or four spots that guys are trying to sneak into now there's just so much money out there that everything has changed but and it's it's that's a good thing it just makes the end of the season even that much more important two things one capitalize on your the horses or bulls you've drawn or the opportunities you have and two just make sure that you're healthy and ready to go and not give up those opportunities because once they come and gone they're gone and I should say 2A make sure your Rodeo count that you can count those rodeos in the world standings because we've seen you're going to need them because we've seen that happen before guys not realizing that they're over their count like maybe sou Falls doesn't count and you win $25,000 so it's it's a crazy time but it's exciting time and we were talking you know just looking at the bull riding top five in the world standings you know it's kind of unprecedented every guy in that top five you know if they were to have a really good last three and a half weeks here could be over 200,000 headed into the NFR have you ever seen that before no there's no way that's ever happened cuz usually the leader might have 250 I mean Stetson was different but like even when Sage was making his runs he might have been at 200 two little over 200 rarely guys behind him were I I mean maybe one guy but that that just says and that's a compliment to the amount of money that's out there amount of money and how even the field is right now yeah because we you know as bull riders well they can go to a different Association Well a different Association to just ride Bulls and the money's there well we've proven now with the money that's out there that if you're a good bull rider in the top 15 and even the top five you could probably make $300,000 in a year yeah and that's a great way to make a living and assuming you have some sponsors to help you cover the overhead but we back in the day and I always say like guys were getting in the NFR at 60,000 and maybe not even winning any money at the NFR they're probably lucky to break even on just the year so it's so much different now yeah and almost everybody inside that top five or inside that top 10 is you know closing in $150,000 so it's going to be a good race in Las Vegas more money up than ever so I can't wait to see how it shakes out let's go to our Pro rodo props kind of leads us to our our end of the season events we have here Tracy and this one's got to go to cinch you know a proud sponsor here of pro rodeo and also the palop rodeo at the Washington State Fair because you know they just had the Cinch playoffs there this past weekend and it is just a such a high class event Tracy everything from the contestant Hospitality to the action to the stock and you know just everything even surrounding the state fair we talked about it that's one of the cleanest prettiest state fairs I've ever been to In My Life yeah it's a beautiful Arena I mean it's made for Rodeo great crowds and but the fair aspect of it you and I go to a lot of rodeos that have the fair attached to it some fairs are different than others but that one is just it's almost like you're going to someone's house it's so clean I mean it's just such a cool environment trash anywhere I mean it's just bizarre uh that it's that I mean that's something you could obviously be proud of if you're but uh it's just great to see that rodeo still have so much prize money available to be part of this leg to get to sou Falls because obviously you have to do well in palala 90% of the time to get to sou Falls you know qualify for the 12 and to have two huge rodeos like that within like three weeks of each other and obviously there's another one in Mandan squeezed in as well it's unprecedented in PRCA history well you know that I think it was my first year trade Tracy the I guess what they would used to call the tour finale in 21 you know it used to end in PE up that was my first year was all right we're going to wrap this thing up in Po and pretty much the season was over exactly no I guess first year I think it was actually in SEL right and then it was just P up by itself and now you know it's grown into this giant thing where combined you know there's $2 million between su falls and PB that these guys can win in the last month of the season so it's it's really grown into something special here with PR Rodeo yeah and I mean CCH obviously being on board with that and the sponsorship and it just means like hey maybe I haven't had a great summer like I I'm chugging along and I'm right there I mean it's that one last hit because how many Cowboys would you ask like if there was one more Rodeo like if I could get in one bigger rodeo and I mean $20,000 at the end of the season I mean you could see how it could swing you from 18 to 15 or whatever it may be and it's just great that they have that those opportunities available cuz when I first started that those opportunities weren't available you pretty much knew who the top 14 guys were the 15 guy may sneak in yeah we'll have to we'll talk a little bit more about that that finish and peol it because it was good a lot of guys you know shuffled in the standings with their wins but we want to remind you that this episode of the shoe bosses is sponsored by Las Vegas the home of the NFR for 39 years you can come see why Vegas is a sports and entertainment capital of the world this December when Pro Rodeo's best saddle up and ride at the NFR so let's let's get into the little bit of that talk Tracy about the top 15 you know what the finishes npl up did for the world standings as we head into our Short Round and there were some big time implications on those world standings and first place check out there in in Pala $113,000 that's no uh that's nothing to scoff at yeah exactly and I mean it'll move guys a money it move guys up and down and 13,000 if you won it but most of those guys that won it won money in the rounds exactly so they're probably walking away with probably 15 to $20,000 yeah anywhere from yeah I would say 10 to you know 19 20,000 yeah yeah I mean and that that that's a check that I mean it it's like when in San Antonio I mean it's it's a big rodeo it's like when in Fort Worth and to be that late in the season granted a lot of these guys probably are in the mix or they wouldn't be there they wouldn't have qualified even still be rodeoing too so obviously the 24 guys you were seeing there those are the guys that are fighting the fight really fight if you don't do well there it's still possible tough Cooper proved that you know as an example but you have to it becomes really really difficult if you're not in the mix or at least trying to win money there and a lot of guys did and even if you didn't qualify for sou Falls and you won maybe you won five or 6 thousand it's still a good rodeo still like winning every other regular season Rodeo right because the rodeos now like we don't have that Rodeo out there that you're going to walk to and win 10 grand outside of maybe ground money as a bull rider so yeah it's just fantastic and it's just great to see I mean and then you they go from there to P Pendleton and I mean they have all that stuff in Pendleton and then it just seems like the money just keeps adding up and stacking up and stacking up which is great for our contestants yeah let's start with some of those implications that it had and first of all you got to start with the you know the 2022 PRCA world champion bearback Rider Jess Pope because Pope has had a season that's been kind of up and down Tracy he's battled injuries in the spring he finally got out in the summer he's been on a heater though the last what month and a half I guess you would say and he comes out and sets the arena record uh 92 and a half points there in up on disco party and you know he just seems like he's on an absolute tear right now and how about this he goes he went into P up outside the top 15 in the world standings wi 16,450 bucks in Washington and now he's inside the top 10 of the world standings right just seems like he's on an unbelievable tear and that's going to have a big shakeup of you know guys that maybe thought they were in and now Jess takes one of their spots right and a guy like Jess Pope you can never count out he's won a World title but he also won three averages and he was in the to win four last year in round 10 so he's a guy that knows how to get it done in crunch time and those are guys that you have to assume that are probably going to do well in big events like that because they step up especially when they have the horse that you know they don't control the draw but guys like that usually take advantage of the draws they're given and give Jess credit I mean like you said he was scrapping and CLA the whole year he was in the I mean headed into what maybe beginning of August before maybe Dodge City he was set in 25th to 30th in the world standings right and that's a lot to ask of yourself like man I got to turn it up like really turn it up but some guys have that but some guys have exactly and and they have enough talent and they know have the knowhow to know what they need to do and it didn't surprise me with J because Jess is so fundamentally sound yeah and when he gets good horses he usually takes takes advantage of the situation I'm sure it was electric out there you were there in person yeah it was I'm sure it was crazy yeah well and the best thing about that Championship Sunday there in palop is they from an eight down to a four so you know you have everybody in the it's it's a one header Clean Slate on Sunday you got to be in the top four fastest times or best scores to get in and then when you get to that four everybody's letting everything hang you know you're at least winning I think $5,000 because I think it was 5,000 to Fourth 75th 7500 to third 9,000 to Second 13,000 to first so you know you're getting paid regardless so you let it all hang out and that kind of leads us right into our next talking point here of a guy that in the world standings that needed a jump to solidify his spot and that's B Trevor R and it looks like he you know I don't want to get ahead of myself because I think he's still 12th but there's about a 25 to $30,000 Gap there that uh looks like he could be headed back to his first NFR since 2017 right and and that's well that's a credit to him that still on the still on the grind I think he's 31 years old and riding bulls which is not no easy task and secondly it proves with the money out there and if you can do enough like you can get right back in the mix I mean without that kind of money at the C thing in palop and without that kind of money available and the ground money counting and all that he's probably not in the mech he probably would have called it a season yeah but you get a huge win like that now all of a sudden not only I going to the NFR I want to get as much as I can when I get there because obviously bull riding at the NFR is so temperamental and ground money counts anybody can win the Bulls I mean I know that's anybody can win any event but the Bulls especially with ground money yeah and we're recording this on on Wednesday here and last night in the X bowls finale you know we were watching it in Pendleton a guy like Trey kimy who's fighting for his life on the bubble rode with a broken foot you know he made a qualified ride had one of the top rides in round three made made a pretty good chunk of change you know it just shows that these guys are pulling out all the stops because they know how important it is to get to Vegas because you know that's where they really make a big amount of their money is when they get to the Thomas and Mac but they're clearing profit in Vegas once they get to Vegas not that they haven't made money and it's different for every event with time to event guys and horses and stuff and the travel but if you go to Vegas you get the 10,000 for qualifying granted you can use it for tickets or other things but that's when you start clearing money that's like okay I've made this now this is like that's like your Christmas bonus check it's all sitting there you win one round you $38,000 you're 33,000 this year but that average is 86,000 like that's insane so and you understand why because after September 30th at that point what does it matter like you've got to do anything possible known to man to try to right out the season to make it because if you made it then you have all of October and all of November to get healthy essentially eight weeks yeah well in some of these guys you know Tracy we talk about all the money they can make at the NR you got to think for these guys that are maybe 25 to 30 in the world standings you know the year comes to an end September 30th their next CH chance at Big Money probably January you know maybe outside of making a really good chunk of change at the circuit finals or these guys got to go work their day jobs you know that they have in that kind of down period of to just so you can keep going down the road right I mean so there's so much more involved if if you go to the NFR you're probably not getting a day job you're probably because if win 100,000 bucks or something yeah or 75 $100,000 I mean that's that's a good chunk of change for a yearly a yearly job just to get that kind of money and there's no overhead in Vegas like you're not tra once you get to Vegas you're in Vegas and I mean and it means so much to and guys Ryden I saw uh I remember back in the day will low rode at the NFR with a broken foot the entire NFR and I mean and we've got guys that are battling injury right now that are right in the mix and probably trying to hold on to Andel to make the NFR because they're not going to ride anymore so it just makes for a dramatic finish and that makes it better for us as Riders but it's just cool cool for the sport yeah let's break down some of those other PRCA event winners out in PL up steer wrestler JD struis uh Team Ropers Coleman Proctor and Logan medin we're actually gonna have Coleman on the the show he's going to join us to talk about that win in pup and you know just his pro rodeo career up to this point but he wins the rodeo with Logan medin saddle Bron Rider Ryder Wright actually wins I guess what you would call a tiebreaker with Lefty Holman they were both 89 in the finals in the final four shootout he ends up winning the tie Braker and then tie out Roper Shad Mayfield I mean there was a couple runs where he admitted to me I'm in a lot of pain man but that dude just keeps winning big rodeos he's won big rodeo after big rodeo here in 2024 yeah I mean and he won he won pup last year won pup last year he won Cheyenne this year he won you know Fort wor I I just hope for his sake I mean I don't know if he dials it back cuz he'll he won if I remember right he won sou Falls last year too he told me he's not taking a break until the end of the season so I mean hopefully for him when that break comes he can get healthy for the NFR because it'd be a shame to see him do everything he's done well he's got a golden shot at a world title and and yeah how many times do you have a shot to win a world title and he's been right in the mix to win a world title like the last five years he won in 2020 he the only thing that's missing in shad's resume and he's had the he's at the gold buckle so that's not missing is consistently performing well at the NFR and and the biggest thing I see is he's so good and he sees guys doing well in front of it's like Barry Bonds watches Samy Sosa hit a home run well then I'm gonna swing for the fences because I know I can hit it out if if somehow he can temper that enthusiasm and back it down a little I think he could win the world but there's just so you saw it last year with meded and he had he would had a 61 and Riley web and those guys get going so fast shad's just got so much talent I mean he's got athletic ability and Talent with which a lot of guys don't have he's got gifts that a lot of guys don't have yeah so it'll be interesting to see it shakes out and that kind of leads us right into our eight question segment another guy with a chance at a world title quietly having a really good year we're GNA have eight questions with the number F five ranked tie down rer in the world John DCH yeah and D he even told me he was trying to get in the all-around and might do a little steer wrestling yeah I don't know if he made that happen I don't know if he made that happen he's a big boy but he's tutor by one of the best ever in Joe Beaver and he's obviously absorbed a lot of that and he's got a lot of talent and he's he's one of those guys you can't sleep on John DH he's won rounds at the NFR oh yeah he knows how to win and it's like anything in Rodeo and Cody o proved it for years guys get hot there and all of a sudden it's like oh my gosh yeah you're winning a world title so let's go to our eight question segment with John douch favorite movie uh John Wayne the Cowboys favorite restaurant oh man Olive Garden favorite horse you've ridden uh pistol my gray I just got last year what's your favorite name for a horse uh definitely pistol what's your favorite hobby outside of rodeo Oh man I have to come back to that describe tie down roping in one word fast who's your Mentor Joe Beaver what's your favorite ice cream uh vanilla who would you want to be a tag team partner in the wrestling ring Chuck Norris or Bruce Lee oh man I'll go Chuck Norris we appreciate sitting down there with John DS Tracy and uh you know he is a genuine really really nice kid and he just continues to improve in his roping and you're top five you're in the world title hunt in Vegas yeah and he he's had to I mean granted Joe Beaver helped him but he's had to work his way to be great at just CU Jo is helping you doesn't mean okay I'm going to qualify for the NFR he puts in a ton of work his little brother just won that college National Finals Rodeo right yeah and he's going to be in the mix he's going to get on his permit next next year's the plan and then because he I guess he loves just training horses for John that's kind of what he does and when they both get going on the road though you know it' probably be great for just the family in general but he's a he's a quality Roper I mean he's proed things he gets gets toel but he's a great Roper yep so we appre appreciate John sitting down with us that's going to end it for our first segment here on the shoe bosses we're going to take a quick break when we come back we'll have your viewer question your historic NFR moment of the week and so much more all leading up to Coleman Proctor's interview on the back half we're back right after this Farm life means always hoping for the best but planning for uncertainty you have to be ready for the next everything the next Dawn the next season the next harvest the the next technology the next challenge and the Next Generation no matter what comes your way we can help keep you ready for the next welcome back into the shoe boss's podcast getting ready to sit down with a a guy that's had a lot of success in Rodeo made a lot of money in Rodeo eight trips to the NFR we're going to sit down with Team open header Coleman Proctor guys won a bunch of big rodeos won a lot of money and he's just great for the sport of rodeo he's great he's got a great personality he's done a lot of things outside of rodeo on TV and on broadcast and things that just just promote rodeo and those are the kind of guys we love but it's just good for the sport yeah let's promote another pro rodeo Hall of Famer in our Hall of Fame Spotlight 2015 inductee be back Rider Mark Garrett you know this is a South Dakota Cowboy that made nine trips to the National Finals Rodeo and he was known to to perform under the highest amount of stress Tracy and look no further than uh 1996 round 10 at the NFR he knew he needed a good ride to accomplish and everything was in front of him he goes for 83 points on Big Ben Rodeo company Spring Fling which is also a Hall of Famer in itself the horse but that that ride allowed him to not only win the round the world title and the NFR average all in Night 10 I'm sure that was about as much emotion and excitement as you could have uh he provided it right there mark Garrett did yeah and he's Hall of Fame worthy as brothers I mean there as brother Marvin's in the Hall of Fame Garrett name is really well in South Dakota I mean you mentioned that name and with rodeo and they know what you're talking about welld deserving of getting in the hall and winning on a moment like that and that alone is worth a lot of credit do you know is he related to shorty Garrett by any chance I don't know if that family's related I don't believe so I was just thinking of you know bear back and Bron Riders up in that neck of the woods they might be disr I don't know because I remember we've done stuff with Shorty because he's qualified for the NFR I know at least once and I don't remember that tie in yeah well that's a definitely a a deserving pror Spotlight also in 996 when he when he made that 83-point ride he also set the record the NFR average record at the time obviously times have changed you know it's no longer I think it was 783 or 763 points on 10 heads so you know guys are making a little bit better rides but still uh you know historic moment there for for Garrett well the scores were so much different I mean there was a time when 83 and 84 was a great ride now we have 90s all all the time and when when I first got here 90s were like wow and now it's pretty much every Rodeo every big rodeo someone has a 90 so it's kind of hard to relate that but obviously he had the talent to do what he needed to do and to get into Hall of Fame welld deserving yeah let's talk about another historic moment we'll get Andrew to fire it up here for us as we get ready for our historic NFR moment of the week and uh we're going to let this one play out and then I'll give you a little description on uh what exactly happened here Tom Ferguson came in second and was one step closer to the all-around title he misses this one missed this C now he still has time because he holds in this event about a 19 second lead over the number two man we have 18 seconds topse now we've got 20 on the Winston scoreboard and on our scoreboard here that we see two wraps and a half inch and he is 265 got to love it Tracy we go back to the 1976 NFR in Oklahoma City Hall of Famer Roy super Looper Cooper wasn't going to let the world title or the average title slip away from him as you saw he missed on his first Loop but a lot of lot of people don't understand you get two Loops in Vegas or two Loops at the NFR obviously this was in Oklahoma City but he had to throw a second Loop 26.5 second time he kind of ran that thing around like a carousel but got it done and secured him his first world title yeah he it's it's crazy like the manism he has is so much like tough like because you see tough you know we see him nowadays and obviously tough's family as well but yeah I mean it it gives him so much credit cuz imagine the emotion of missing and then then missing on your second L and you lose it all yeah and then you miss on that one it's over you're not going to win the World title as rookie Yuri wins it I mean obviously goes into a legendary career eight-time world champion Hall of Famer uh and he proves it there I I I just can't imagine the nerves you would have had like circling around thinking I got to make this catch I got to make this catch CU you know he thinking if I don't it's over yeah well the best part thing about that was watch right here Tracy look how many loops and how tight he's like this calf is not getting up I don't know if the people that come out to to release the ties and everything they're probably like what he put this thing on with the cinder block yeah they were like in the stands like what just happened we're amazed but he end up he end up doing that kept him the world title and that's what Cody o did that time when he had that knee injury in 2001 he just needed to get a time like doesn't matter how you get it yeah you just need to so you stay in the average that's why we always speak the average is so important mhm what what's the time limit in tie down ring I thought it was 25 so maybe they it is now I think but I I don't know back I'm not sure back then he wasn't acting like it was like oh my gosh why on a timeline I think now it's 25 seconds yeah so back then a 26 and a half second time ended up securing it all so definitely an historic NFR moment as Tracy said Roy went on to have a a fantastic career and his son tough has you know done just just as well you know as him and he's looking for another gold buckle this year as well let's go on our viewer question this one comes from Trevor on YouTube Tracy I wants to know who's the youngest world champion in Rodeo history and for this one you got to go way back we're going all the way back to 1959 at the age of 18 years 3 months 21 days Jim rogriguez won a team roping title it's even more impressive because they only gave out one t title in Team Roping back then so he had to be better than all these veterans and he was what two months three months out of high school yeah and I believe he's from California I'm like 99% he was a California Roper cuz a lot of those guys back in the day were but yeah I just couldn't imagine being that young with all the veteran guys I mean it was an older crowd back then I would imagine like older guys competing and to be that good at that level and not counting both it seems weird to me that they didn't because I've gotten this conversation because you can have to invite guys to go with you too if your partner didn't make it so there was a lot of variables in there I know the the Rodriguez they put on schools all the time like if look through all the old PSNS one of the best ever but man 18 years old that's crazy well and then we we also you know we can't go through this without mention an Lewis you know I believe she was 10 years old ended up winning a barrel racing World title after she passed away and was a pretty tragic event Tracy before the rangler National Finals rode you yeah and obviously never want to see something like that happen and I mean especially someone so young it was just heartbreaking just heartbreaking yep and one thing that uh you know we as we kind of transition in here Tracy talking about all these young performers and what they've done in Rodeo uh what do you uh you got anything for for shos nation CB Nation well it is true in high school I benched 300 lb what happened to you on three lifts 100 200 300 the bar baby once again muscles I can tell that's I I was a power Club hero well what what people not everybody wears a cape when you're in that weight room it's all business yeah what everybody doesn't know is Cy actually has a bench press in his office he puts two Donuts on each side of the ball just gets after it and then gives himself a snack after he's done give myself a high five cuz no one else around here will yeah one guy we had to kick out Tracy uh was Buck he tried to get in there on your bench press and we had to tell him that he's delegated to the bottom half of this building he cannot step foot up top he's a bottom feeder that's where he belongs he's a bottom feeder Buck if you see Buck you give him a kick in the butt because he's a bottom feeder he doesn't need to be around anybody in public he needs to avoid people well let's see what he's got for your parod word of the day I'm buck official correspondent of the shoot boss is the official podcast of the PRCA my word for the day is green as in Cowboys are chasing green and money to try to get in the top 15 to get to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Teton Ridge when it comes the buck and green I tried to chase some green on my own it didn't work out so well try it again bud where am I in 1936 a group of cowboys and cowg girls came together for the common good of rodeo they accomplished a feat that sparked a fire of greatness in countless Western athletes stay there today the Western lifestyle burns on in our contestants and fans hearts and souls we aim to preserve the cowboy coat and keep the Western lifestyle alive together as one we we are pro rodeo welcome back into the shoe bosses podcast the official podcast of pro rodeo Tracy we talked about it off the top of the show getting ready to sit down with eight-time NFR qualifier Coleman Proctor he's had another great season with his partner Logan Medlin and uh kind appreciate him enough jumping on here to talk about rodeo with us yeah and I've said it countless times not only he's a great Roper great team roper he's a great Ambassador for the sport of rodeo he's done so many things in the media and different things so we're glad to have him on board here yeah man Coleman's joining us now Coleman good to see you man I know I S you what just three or four days ago when you picked up the win out there in pup you know how how's it been since then chance to kind of settle in and you know see what that $113,000 did for you guys well first of all it's always good to see you because that means I'm winning right you know what I mean you don't you don't seem to interview a lot of the guys that arm so that's great anytime that we get to jump on here and hang out that means that I must have been doing something good uh yeah I haven't slowed down much you know we came right over to Pendleton uh doing good at doing good at palot you know making the Governor's Cup it allowed for our week to open up a lot we didn't have to go to do the rat race of all the T rodeos my partner ended up driving his family home and I picked up Junior ngara here at Pendleton because I'm on the bubble in the steer open and as we make a charge for that allaround world title you know making the ster open finals is going to be huge so I was coming to Pendleton either way and I got the opportunity to pick up Junior Nar so shoot we've had a busy week here in Pendleton so far that's pretty sweet man uh is K did Caleb have to go somewhere too so you and Junior just figured uh you'd give her heck out there you know what's funny is like with the Governor's Cup and the way the tour points are working this year you know Caleb had rodeoed in the winter without Junior oh yeah when he was coming back from injury and uh so Caleb had more tour points than Junior and Junior just felt like he needed to go to Pendleton try to secure some more points of course Pendleton being the last big tour Rodeo that we have you know there's a lot more points available on the table so it kind of worked out great for me and Logan you know I will say this Logan he wasn't about to drive by it like he wasn't going to let me just pick up a ke Roper steer Roper he was he was coming and uh when Junior needed to run he he felt comfortable enough to that I had a good partner that he could he could head her on home that's awesome awesome have you ever rope with Junior before you know we've run some extras at the rodeos before and it was funny because like the other day at K Washington there was a turnout and we they had to run the steer so I headed him and Junior healed him and I mean we've made several runs on extra steers and we always kind of laugh about how you know we got pretty good chemistry so and it's turned out good over here so far we placed on our first one and uh we're currently leading it so hopefully a big run on Saturday and it'll be a you know might be one of them deals if you win Pendleton with Junior you just never rope with him again you know what I mean you just check that one off the list call it good call it good I have had to field a lot of phone calls though because when you win 20,000 with your partner at one rodeo and then you're entered with a different partner the following Monday you know there's a lot of questions to get popped up no for everybody out there Logan and I are still roping together as far as I know unless he's cut me that's great Coleman I want to ask you a little bit about that allaround race that you mentioned you know it seems like maybe in years past stetson's kind of ran away with it you know he's had a couple hundred thousand doll lead headed into September but it's wide open here in 2024 is that something you kind of set out to here this season when you knew that there was going to be an opening to let's give this a try or were you thinking you were going to do more steer open this year regardless well you know I started steer open here a couple years ago and it's been a big goal of mine to make the steer open finals and I've worked really hard at it uh this kind of funny because after Cheyenne I finally showed up in the standings and everybody's like oh you gonna try to make the finals now and I'm like well I've been trying since January you know but uh I think you know knowing this year coming into this year you were obviously gonna have a lead on Stetson like you know he wasn't supposed to come back until about Reno so it was like man if we can get busy and get going and get hot right here at least have some sort of a fighting chance and of course you know what Stetson does so great he rides ranked Bulls I mean incredible his his his sadle Bron riding is you know amazing but man like what he really stands out is he can ride really rank bulls and he wins a lot in the bull riding so you know not knowing how coming off that injury how he would do and all the events it's like man there might be a chance and so uh you obviously it was on the Forefront of my mind I've been working at it hard all year my dad just uh really opened up to the idea the other day he's like you know son if you get hot and that steer open a little bit you might have a chance at all around I'm like well Chief that's that's been the plan you know all year so that's that's really been my my focus this year getting started was I really wanted to make the steer open finals you know and the National Finals I just think it's so cool all my great Heroes teoman You Know Rich Skelton you know all the greats that would make the steer open finals and the National Finals in the same year I just think that's the coolest thing ever so you know I certainly want to get added to that list of cowboys you mentioned the steer roping and I've done a lot with steer roping in the nfsr for years it seems like the transition to have you have to have a great horse in steer roping not that you don't in NE a timed events but steer roping it was that is that big the biggest climb to find that horse that you compete at that level to hopefully get to Mulan you know that's been something I was very blessed with I had some great friends that are that are great steer Ropers and I got started off right CA low he didn't want to sell him and but he kind of he allowed me to buy him let's put it that way he uh he wanted me to have a good horse to learn on and that's that's been a huge huge Advantage for me getting started because once you ride a good one and you understand what you're looking for you know like you said in that event it is so important to have a teammate I mean that not only they got to be really good at their job they have to really like you you know what I mean there's no it's not like asking your wife to go play round of golf I mean she can be mad and still you enjoy your day right but in the steer open he better be on your team the whole way and and I've really came into some great horses I've uh I got another great horse that belongs to a good friend of mine over there at Southern Ranch is Shane Boston and he has really came on and made a horse I mean he has been outstanding I've wrote him all summer that's why I rode at Cheyenne kind of allowed me to rest my older horse and now I'm on him over here at Pendleton and he's fresh and going so I feel real deep in that herd selection of the steer open I got four great ones that I like a lot uh you know obviously I want to make it to the steer open finals it's kind of a HomeTown Rodeo for me they do the back number ceremony at my uncle's Winery you know so it's they do the kkut I guess over there so I mean we're gonna go over there kind of go through that taster line maybe I'll get the top 15 guys besides myself maybe send them through that taster line a little extra you know what I mean let's get them a little bit buzzed up maybe and then I can have an advantage going into round one I love it Coleman uh you know we talk about partners and different things like that and Andrew Rosario you can't see him on camera right now but he's our producer here in the shoot bosses podcast he actually had a question for you Andrew you want to ask him his question here a little yeah Coleman so I don't know if you saw we did a a YouTube video with JC and and Buddy Hawkins talking about like their their life going up and down the road and my and my question was um if let's say like you or your partner going through like kind of a low or like kind of a cold streak and they're going through a hot streak how do you catch that spark from your partner and to kind of match that Synergy so you are both kind of peing at the same time you know main thing about Team Roping is we're both headed for the same the same goal the whole time and that you know you don't get divided in your house if you will you know like Logan and I we come off of Cheyenne having a lot of momentum things are rolling really well and then it kind of took an Abrupt turn and we went about a month without really catching one clean and making a good run and it's just something that you're always trying to pick your guy up or he's picking you up you know you got got his support you're giving him your support and then you know luckily for us we got to Ellensburg and and we had some good friends up there jamy fiser invited me out and and he allowed us to use his practice pin and we got to get in there and grind at it you know that's something we don't get to do on the road a lot you run a lot more uh practice steer stering through the windshield than you do actually in the arena so you know to to be able to get into an arena and and have a practice like we'd have back home you know really allowed us to get our stuff kind of back on the same page and get you know just kind of get our Rhythm back together I mean it's just like any good team sport you know you got have good Rhythm you you can't have just one outstanding player you got to have a team working together and that that really is what turned it around for us you know we left there we went to W Wala we made two great runs we made a great run on our first one at Ellensburg and then the then I dropped the ball on the second one and then we come back of course and went to Pala and probably what helped us more than anything was I took a break I went home and I played Mr Mom for about a week and dealing with three little girls and my wife had to be gone on a business trip so it was just all on me there one night and you know about between bath time and and reading stories at night and practicing our soccer I realized head and steers is pretty easy I love it Coleman one thing I gotta ask you because obviously we've you know been around you if I think I've been around you and probably interviewed you 10 15 times at this point you know how do you always keep your perspective in life because it seems like you always have a you know whether things are going good or bad you know you might be angry after a run but you quickly flip that script and have a have a good perspective and just overall just having a great time out on the road you know is that something you focus on is just trying to to have that perspective and kind of keep Rodeo you know as part of your life but not all of your life you know the main thing for me I think growing up is is guys like me and Jake Long we grew up together and we didn't you know we didn't come from the background of having you know parents that made the finals and and this was a pipe dream for just a couple of little broke kids of Northeast Oklahoma that love to rope and I think and and you lose sight of that because this is our job you know it's what we do to make a living it's what how we provide for our families but it is easy to lose sight of that is what we've wanted to do our whole life and so to keep that perspective what I finally learned was you're not going to win every time and that's it's a hard fact I mean if you were to do percentages you probably lose I would say 60 or 70% more than you win and the main thing I always try to tell every student I have and every young kid out there is you know I'm either winning or I'm learning but either way I'm not losing because if you know I go back to the National Finals in 2019 my first chance to really win a gold buckle and I mean I felt flat on my face I wrote ter terrible you know I went in too high strong and just I took the experience of 2019 and I used that when I went back in 2021 so and if I'm taking those losses and those bad performances every time and and learning something from them and bouncing back then then really 2019 wasn't a bad finals it was a great opportunity to learn something and so you know that's the perspective I take I'm as competitive as they come I don't care if for flipping quarters I don't care what we're doing I want to win U but main thing is I always just try to focus on there's been a lot of people that have sacrificed to let me live this life and to chase this dream and there's been a lot of people that rode with me through the highs and the lows and all of it and I just feel like any time that anytime I have a bad attitude about it or anytime that I want to get sour I just remember how many people have given up so much to let me do this and I just don't want to be ungrateful is there you speaking of the highs the lows is there one rodeo you've won so many great rodeos and been to the NFR and everything outside of the gold buckle what what did Rodeo do you want to check off your list that you you've been to all these great rodeos that you want to win before you call it a career all of them the next one I guess you know like of course Pendleton is huge you know Pendleton Selenas and Cheyenne you know I've been fortunate to win the all around shine a couple times and and I've never won like a single event there I've had a chance in that steer open twice now they just need to run the third steer in slack I'm so good in the slack but they always want to put it in the perf I always joke they can't let me be that many times without I'm going to do good on that last one one day but you know definitely those three you know San anon's always been a rodeo that's very special uh to my heart apologize about that people are trying to get a hold of me uh you know San Antonio I've won it once I've had a chance to win it several times and uh it just hasn't worked out but that's definitely another big one I want to check off my list and you know I want to win the average of the finals I think that's you know in today's world to be able to place along the go rounds you know and be fast enough and then be the fastest man on 10 head I mean I think that's such an accomplishment and uh I think I would have to say that probably the NFR average or when Pendleton sanone Houston all the big ones I just want to win them all let's just never lose let's just always win that's what I want to do I love it Coleman you know before we let you go here because we know that you're out there at pendlton got a lot going on but uh you know what's your mindset obviously you punch your ticket once again to to su falls and have an opportunity up there with with Logan and it's a place where you guys found a lot of success out a year ago yeah I'm excited you know I got Heisman he's been down at C my good friends down there uh they've been getting him legged up and ready he's been swimming he looks like a boxer ready for a heavyweight match you know he's in exceptionally better shape than I am I'm sad to say but uh you know looking forward to getting back on him obviously the Governor's Cup anytime you take a selfie with the governor like you need to return the next year I mean that's just Unwritten rule that has to happen and uh we're very excited you know that was a lot of pressure making that fourman round at palala that was a huge side of relief is getting that punched and getting that done we were a little far back in the T points not saying it wouldn't have been possible but we'd have really had to get hot this week and do good uh so obviously that's a huge Advantage for us we know how much success we can have there we know how good our team is in those conditions in that setup once I get back on that little bay horse you know I'm really looking forward to it so you gonna fight the fight with the steer open I mean I know you're at Pendleton and they have steer open there is there are you kind of go to as many steer open as you can check off the Box before September 30 30th to try to get to Mulan absolutely you know that's been the plan all year I've drove from the Short Round at Nampa and drove 13 hours straight through pulled in 10 before I was up got on my horse and roped the neck so I mean I've done it all summer and I'm not going to quit now uh I'm entering the there a lot of little ones left at the end but but the big ones for me are doing good here at Pendleton started off yesterday good one second in the first round need to come back and win something good in that next round and finish up solid in the average you know that's going to be obviously the biggest carrot right to make the whole deal work is doing good here and capitalizing it with big money on the line I mean that's that's your job as a cowboy anyways is is to get them doctored whenever they you know just no different than if we were at the house the sickest one he's doctor Pendleton's the sickest Rodeo we get to go to so uh I'm gonna try to go to as me as I can but of course with the great rodeo at M Dan North Dakota coming up next weekend that takes away the opportunity to go to a few of the little steer opens and then of course with the Governor's Cup so we're looking at I got Pendleton and amarilla left realistically for the open those are the two that I'll kind of make my stand draw My Line in the Sand and go for the best Coleman I think you still have my favorite quote of all time I think it was two years ago maybe when you guys won in P up you told me I don't remember what the cowboy was but you said you know I haven't seen him miss a pair of heels since Moby Dick was a minnow and I think that'll for that that was Klay Smith man you hav't seen him this one forever I'm telling you that's myor kind of almost the same way this year you know Logan he Logan heals that sear so fast and he brought a slack down right between his horse's ears and so it just jerked out of his hand he couldn't find it and I mean you got an All-Star point guard right there who had opportunity to go play college basketball right did you see the hands on him getting it and I mean he grabs it he had about that much rope left when he grabs his slack and gets him aali and we went 49 obviously in a fourman round with the with the the caliber teams that were up you don't expect that to win the championship which is what you're there for you know that's let's be honest that's you know you want to win those cinch playoffs you want to win the big ones and uh so we wrote out you know I'm excited because I know that we're guaranteed third we've had you know an amazing Rodeo so far we won both the rounds we've been in before that so any kind of check's going to make it a great Rodeo for us uh and then some teams stubbed their toe and I told Logan you know he was disappointed there of course riding out and I said man I think what we did I thought you played it just right because had we blasted that steer then the last two teams they know they got a blasting you know what I mean but whenever we go 49 now it gives them a little time to think like oh hey maybe we can just lay it up a little bit like maybe it worked in our favor kind of like if you've been sending fast balls you throw one change up you know maybe you can catch them off Pace a little and it worked out in our favor yeah well Logan man we can't thank you enough it's always awesome to get to chat with you I know Tracy and I uh we enjoy watching your rope but also just your personality make it fun to cover the sport of rodeo and uh we can't thank you enough well I appreciate you guys having me on it was good talking to you yeah there oh I do want to say hey I do want to say happy birthday to my dad today is his birthday 70 what is he 73 years old this year I'm not to do the math but yeah so happy birthday chief well make sure that gets in there thanks Coleman appreciate it Coleman safe travels have a good day y you too there it is Tracy Coleman Proctor such a great interview such a great Roper and uh like you you said before we went on an ambassador of the sport of Ro that the sport really does need and he's really taken that by the reins yeah and he's well spoken and he just knows the history of the sport and to for him to get to syruping would be a big deal he's gonna have to make up a decent amount of he's just going to have to do well at at Pendleton and amarello but it would there's so many greats to done well in Team Roping or tie down Roy Cooper and T wolman and all these guys that have Joe Beaver all these guys have qualified for both Trevor Brazil and tough Cooper and I mean it just means a lot to those guys and I think more than anything it proves their worth that hey I'm not just a team roper I can do this I'm a cowboy and that and steer roping is considered the cow the true Cowboys Cowboy event but I you know and he's right there in the mix for the average I mean he's won the American before he's won won huge rodeos it's not like he hasn't done well in Vegas Vegas is just the best of the best and maybe this is this year you never know but there couldn't be a better Ambassador or more Wells spoken guy for us at the PRCA than Coleman Proctor yeah no doubt about that Andrew you got something you want to talk about real quick yeah I just wanted to talk to real quick um I know we love Superman here but how cool is this allaround race right now yeah five people five cow boys that can really make a shot for it at the N ofr I just want to see what y'all thoughts are I know like I said I know we love STS I know we love this is kind of a really cool Hound race in my opinion well Tracy talked about it in his most recent digital PSN that came out that'll also be in the the October print is the all-around race is wide open right now and it's and it's going to be a great race you have your Savvy vets you have former World Champs in there uh you have new guys that have stepped into into the Limelight so it is going to be pretty entertaining yeah it's just it's going to come down to guys they're just going to have to stay in the average they're going to have to stay in the average because the money's so big in the average but I mean wayy Shala does he stay in the mix does he stay in the average I mean all these guys and does shad does shad Mayfield finally have the NFR that he's always dreamed of I mean he's won a World title but he didn't have his best NFR in 2020 he'd be the first to admit that can he have that NFR that consistent NFR if he does he could probably win it I mean because he's so talented that because if he's in the average this means he's winning checks I I'm just excited to see what Vegas will do to other people because like a guy like how you going to handle Vegas Wy Shaw has never been to Vegas he's done a gr great things in college and high school but it's like saying yeah he was a great high school player and he was great in college but doesn't mean you're going to play well on Sundays in the NFL I mean it's a different a different environment and the biggest thing that Vegas proves every year is it's a marathon I mean there's a lot of different things in involved in that Marathon good draws good caves whatever but it's still a marathon and you got to be able to pace yourself to be there on round 10 and I know if I were competing and and speaking onto those guys I I would just want to have the chance in round 10 can I still win this but if I put myself in position and done enough to still be there in round 10 don't falter so early that it's not you're not in the mix round 10 then then I go for whatever I got because it's the last round of the rodeo well and I I also think Tracy you you talk about that mentality I don't think you can have that mentality if I'm being honest with you I don't I don't think you can have that mentality I think you just go out and do what youve do you know what got you to this point you know Shad Mayfield obviously you know he might have a mentality to go fast but if he starts pulling back and thinking about what he's doing it could cost him the world title as well so I think you just go in there and you perform the way you performed the entire year you don't think about it and at the end of the 10 days it shakes out how it shakes out yeah and I agree with that because some I I agree with that you can't ask somebody to be something they're not because once they try to do something they can't do or aren't accustomed to doing they're going to look like they can't do it yeah and Marty Yates is the same way Marty Yates goes for you know he goes for the home run every swing I it just shad's so talented that is like my gosh like can you back it off well it's not even only Shad you know it's every Haven Med and all these guys but but in Vegas and we see it in person and and on TV it looks great because it's live but like there's so much pressure like whether those guys want to admit it you see a guy get an 88 Point bull ride you want to go 90 you see a guy get a 6.4 run like Haven meded you want to go 61 like if you're naturally like Coleman Proctor says you know you're so competitive the last thing you want to do is hey oh I'm going to go out there and not perform as good as I can it's basically what you're saying I'm goingon to safety up and I know it's hard and I've seen guys and I I've watched Trevor Brazil have to have like a 13sec run to win tied down World title and not get it yeah I mean it's Trevor Brazil like of all guys so it it's just it's a fine line you walk and I don't know what the answer is because I'm not at that level talent-wise some guys can flip the switch and some guys can't you just you hate to see guys just not be in the mix in round 10 because they have so much talent well and I think it you know for me It ultimately comes down to maybe you take that mentality if you're round eight and round nine and you know you have a really good chance to win in the average and you just got to pull back a little bit but I don't think you can do it early on because it could ultimately end up costing you money so it's going to be fun to watch it Che out uh it's a good question for me Andrew the all-around race definitely one to watch you know six seven guys all on the hunt there in Vegas to to iron it out and at the end of the 10 days we'll know who the all-around champ is and I'm sure it'll be a great storyline nonetheless whoever it ends up being but uh that's going to do it for another great episode of the shoot bosses we're getting close to ending the top 15 and knowing who that's going to be and September 30th is when it all comes to an end but we'll continue to follow those races for you right here on the show but until then keep on roding danger R by Passion and pride to pain and fear is no stranger but it's last needs to be satisfied hook on it's Second Ride
