what's up what's up it is a good morning I got my man TJ per with me you see you got his hey it's literally about 8:30 when we recording this it'll drop probably about 10 he got the shades on already he feeling good and if you wonder why he feeling good he got the chief's Jersey on he has a son that just SW the Super Bowl L Michael Peron number 29 correct yes sir hey salute to you bro all I want to say is that has to be one of the most incredible feelings as a parent to have a son that not only makes it to the league goes through all the things he has to go through while being in the league gets on the Chiefs and win a Super Bowl thank you for coming on but tell me how was this weekend before we go on all the other stuff how was the weekend you was in Vegas you uh your pops was there right pops was was in Vegas I was in Vegas man tell me about it uh well first of all thank you for that introduction bro so now that we gonna get back to business I'll take my my uh my LS off yeah so the the the weekend was amazing man uh my pops was a coach for 30 something years on the high school level so this was a bucket list for him he's 73 years old he always wanted to go to Vegas and also he always want to attend a Super Bowl so my oldest son L Michel was able to make it to the Super Bowl and we were able to get him a ticket and I was able to spend some time that I'll never forget with my my father man so a lot of people say man uh make sure you spend all the time you can with your parents man cherish your parents so I I figured I'd take heed to that and spend some spend some time with him man man no that that was amazing to see think about it I could went to Vegas and party you feel me facts but I ain't go for that I went to support my son and I went to support my father generations of y'all out there right father son and Grandson yeah you could and grandson and and great grandson in like like Generations that's amazing to see like what like what did y'all do out there right you say you're not partying was it just a lot of bonding was it really what man honestly the way the way to Chief organization and the Super Bowl organization set everything up it wasn't really a need to try to go outside of the box like when we got there first of all it was tight security so we we had to pass like three sets of uh police officers bomb dogs um I had to present my credentials all of that stuff when we got to the hotel so we stayed in a hotel out in Lake Las Vegas which is about 30 minutes outside of the Las Vegas strip okay um the room was Immaculate um anything you can imagine golf courses swimming pools basketball courts Gourmet Mills um it was I mean the setup was very nice it was um unlike anything that I've ever been a part of um and it was just a real real you know I'm in the same hotel lobby with with uh Travis Kelce you know I walk as soon as I get there I see is peo you know it was just like whoa everything just started to kind of hit me all at once that this is real like um while being there I know the players on business I know your son's gonna kick it with you did you get a chance to talk to any of the other players wish him luck or did y'all just you know kind of walk by and passing throughout the the week of uh of being at that hotel no I got a chance to talk to a few players I got a chance to talk to um sne um the defense back number 38 yeah I got a chance to stop after the uh after the Super Bowl uh there was an after party and I got a chance to see uh Chris Jones which is their star defensive lineman and being in the hotel with the families you get to learn a lot about the players and I'm telling you like um I'm now a fan a huge fan of of Chris because there was after party going on and halfway through the Afterparty I get to the hotel thinking I'm leaving early and he's already there with his son in his lap yeah so that kind of tells you what kind of man he is just you know so it was again it was just amazing experience to be able to kind of see what life is like outside of football with all of these star studed players that's cool right there now coach Bridges Justin Bridges told me that you told him you was going to do a snow angel yeah he did he said man you need to do a snow angel in the confetti yeah I I didn't get to do a snow angel but but I did get to go out there and you know have a good time with all the Kansas City chief organization when they won exactly now that's cool so that gamees back and forth back and forth but before we get to the game how nervous are you as a parent knowing that your son's about to head out to Vegas you're about to go out to Vegas to watch him play in the Super Bowl like that has to the most you nervous you ever been probably for a game that you watched him play in or you played in like your en Tire life like what was your nerve levels leading up to the game that's a great question so it's two things that most people know about tjp Ry one I'm hardly ever on time and two I really don't drink alcohol I don't enjoy alcohol that much yeah I was three hours early for my flight yeah and I got lit at the airport lit in the VIP 6 so I end up meeting a uh Kansas City chief fan in TSA and uh we just one thing led to another he found out who I was I found out who he was he actually was a Chiefs fan and he attended the University of Florida which is where my son went to college so um and he ended up being actually a principal of an elementary school in cville so we just kicked it in in VIP man and uh I was super excited if that tells you anything exactly man now I I know how nervous I am and I I wanted the Chiefs to win but I didn't care right but i' be nervous just leading up to the game like man because I know what I would feel like if I was a player U like a p really cement that Legacy so I was scheduled to fly out Friday I canc to everything I had to do Wednesday and Thursday and stayed in the house I ain't want no chance of anything disrupting my flight facts I all need to bang my KNE on nothing on I don't need to get re ended none of that ddy hey I don't want nobody to hear hit me at the light nothing I'm going to stay right here at the C my man sat on the couch like this I just still man waiting until my moment man man hey that that's a beautiful thing now let's go back a little bit everybody wishes their kid could play in a Super Bowl right what was the journey like for L Michael to go from young man starting out playing football high school and which what high school did he go to he went to theor high school in Mobile Alabama okay and you went to Hoover right uh I did go to Hoover for my first year and then I went to Vier High School in Mobile Alabama okay so so where where where're Peewee will skip middle school then we go to Alabama we're out there in Alabama high school then he goes to Florida now he's in the uh NFL winning the Super Bowl what's that like to get a kid from peeee to the League what were some of those critical steps was it the focus because he was already a dog did we have to make him a dog was it the training what was it like for that Village to build him up that's a good question because the old cliche saying is it takes a village to raise a child and I'm here to say that it it really does man from the start of peeee football my cousin was there starting a a football organization so that he can be a part of it okay um L Michel was uh offensive lineman or something like that when he first started playing football and so having someone to believe in you that's in your family that's important um his mother his stepdad um his uncles aunts all of those people were vital so I think the the most critical part as a father for me is to embrace that Village and not try to control everything and let everybody play their part because it's just like the game of football if everybody do their part and is allowed to do their part then you're going to end up with a W and that's what happened with L Michel um from peeee football my cousin took the hems my cousin and my father because you got to remember I was I was 17 years old when L Mich was born okay and I was 11th grade in high school um at the time I was scared I didn't know um how to be a father I didn't know anything about being a father in fact so um I had people to step up during those times uh I had older cousins and his mother she was 15 years old so I was 17 his mom was 15 so L Michel didn't have a Bed full of roses of pieces and cream coming up um he he got the young version of me exactly and so he was able to get a lot of his motivation from some of the things that he didn't have that he wanted um and so it was just um a blessing for me to be able to have a son that that wanted a dream so bad the way he would do anything to get it exactly you know um going into high school is when I really saw that he could be uh a division one player um the eighth grade going from eighth grade into to nth grade was a very very pivotal time uh it was a time in which again his mom was 15 I was 17 so obviously we were co-parenting right so she was smart enough to understand that he needed his father so that that goes back to that Village you know she was smart enough to understand that regardless of what we had going on she was able to um relinquish some of that control and let him come stay with me so he came stayed with me uh that summer eighth grade year I outsourced uh some of the workouts that we did like of course I played football I understand working out and things like that but there was some things about what he wanted that I didn't know I didn't know how to catch I didn't know how to run routes you know I wasn't a skilled player when I played so I had to Outsource it from a guy named dalen uh Williams that played uh football at Alabama so we did three of days I had a guy come in that was a receiver I had a guy come in that was a specialist in speed and then I also had myself for strength training so um again it's not a oneman show it's not it's really about being able to understand the help that you need and allow that help to nurture your product yeah no 100% um and I can say you've done a great job since back then obviously that you're telling me and I know it to be true now you've done a lot with your uh youngest um Austin you know I've seen him with several teams from football baseball to uh hey that's how we met I outsourced that that come to yeah you know you mean you ask mind you you have a son that just won the Super Bowl and and you still get on the phone DP what do you think I should do with this son so then that that's why your kids are successful because you want them to be successful and you'll do the ne steps I don't care because I had one son go D1 already and one son now W the Super Bowl I'm still going to ask for help to get my kids in the best position most parents that have a kid that just plays varsity football knows everything in the world let alone go to Florida be the NFL win a Super Bowl and that's the biggest thing I know what I know I know what I need to help on and I'm going to ask questions on things I might or might not know people in a label Geniuses aren't the smartest people in the world they are clever for being able to find people that can help them get what they want facts every time every time so after um high school he goes to Florida what well Florida um it depends I can't remember exactly where they were at but Florida's been up down up down but it's still Florida where where was he ranked at as a recruit in high school oh so man listen he took the hard route man if he defines getting it out the mud yeah um at one point I don't even think he was ranked um his first 40 time was a 48 in the 10th grade uh we what we did was we ended up going to I think it was um under arour Rivals at the time and then it was uh Nike spark yep spark I didn't know anything about this stuff other than using Google to find Camp so I found those things and took him to it I didn't understand the strategics behind it so I just put him out there and let him run the 40 without excuse me without having any kind of coaching on it and he ran a 48 um he ended up getting getting some good film work together in high school being a three star eventually he went to every uh Nike spark every under aror camp and he was just the known by the time he was in the 12th grade he was a known face in the camp circuit and so at the end of his 11th grade year he was a three Star by the end of his 12th grade year he came back he was a three star and he put together a thousand yard season and double digit touchdowns I can't quite remember but um he came back and double down his senior year so junior year he had uh offers from mid major schools like Troy um ltech uh Southern M you know things like that but we weren't excited with that because we already knew what we wanted right when he came to Dallas to uh out with me and visit every summer we would go out to the stadium and work out like we would sneak in the TCU stadium and work out and we would sneak into uh North Texas stadium and work out now I'm driving at the time I was living in Arlington I'm driving from Arlington to Denton just for a workout with me and my son I'm driving uh to from Arlington to TCU and then we also went to SMU stadium so I I took him to those three colleges that were within my driving vicinity not just because I wanted to take him there but I wanted to create a vision in his head uh what people don't know is Success starts with your mental right you have to vision yourself scor a touchdown before you actually do it you have to vision yourself going to a division one school before you actually do it so what I wanted him to do was I didn't even say anything about why I did it to him when we driving out there I'm just saying we going over here to see what the stadium look like then all of a sudden we take the football and go on the field because I wanted his mind to ins subliminally see and feel what it was like to be where he wanted to be and so those things you have to not only speak into existence but you have to actually act into existence as well facts facts no that that's 100% true you have to see it you have to speak it you have to believe it before it ever happens like it ain't just going to happen if you didn't think it was going to happen because you're not gonna put in the necessary work to do those um things that that's something that I tell these kids all the time there's 12th grade year 12th grade year he ended up earning a fourth star okay um the spring of his 11th grade year Florida came to town okay okay um Florida came to town because he had gone to a an overnight camp he did a lot of camps with colleges but they were just like day camps go in and out yeah yeah so at the time that he went to the Florida Camp um there was Will muschamp was the coach actually okay they were pretty good they they were nine win team something like that yeah U and during the time he was at Camp he won like MV or something during the camp yeah um and there was a guy that was a director player Personnel when bus champ got fired and they brought mne in the player Personnel guy for mus champ stayed on staff okay and so when they were looking for running backs this player Personnel guy say hey man I don't know if you guys know but there's a kid down in Theodore Alabama that you need to go check out his name is l Michel peran and so um they did did um the running back coach uh Tim Skipper at the time went down the theater and gave him a private workout okay gave him a private workout called coach M Wayne after and said he liked what he saw they offered him uh two days later uh L Michel committed okay at the time we were I mean we living in Alabama so you know who the team is at the time Alabama so we had gone to Alabama at least 12 times yeah tuscalo was right down the road his mother would take him his stepdad would take him my dad would take him things like that and uh he really wanted that Alabama offer but if you remember at the time Alabama had that eye on Naji Harris which was a class below him so now you're looking at a kid who's a five star who's coming in that's gonna be younger than you then you also have Devin white who was a running back at the time he was a running back and Lineback at the time Devon ended up going to LSU and now plays for the BS yep uh I think Pro Bowl linebacker for the book yeah do so uh Nick Sav was cting Devon white at the time I think they had a viral video where he was in Nick sav's Cadillac or something on on the yeah on TV so all of those things my son watching now keep in mind Devin white from Louisiana Naji Harris from California so at the time Alabama is popping so they able to recruit all over the country yeah but here it is my son is the number one running back in Alabama he's being looked over yeah So eventually like I said before he came back and doubled down his 12th grade year with another 12200 yard season and a slew of touchdowns all of a sudden Nick Sav come calling man I'm so sorry I don't know how he slipped through the cracks um anything we can do for you we'll do it um come down to Alabama we want to offer you we want to show you the campus and so I'm like man we've been in the campus 12 times you know uh but at the end of the day uh he ended up going to Florida because he didn't want to be sloppy seconds he didn't want to feel like sloppy seconds and he told Nick sa and know funny story he told Nick sa and no the next week they gave his scholarship to a guy named Josh Jacobs oh Josh Jacobs was sign was going to Tulsa he was a three star no long athlete small recruit small recruit he was going to Tulsa Alabama gave him the offer my son went to Florida three years later Josh Jacobs is going first round in three years my son still at Florida does that mean Josh Jacobs was the better running back no yeah Josh Jacobs went to Alabama who had a line and a reputation for winning so um if there's any parents out there you know sometimes you have to do what you have to do to make the best business move for your child regardless of who you're a fan of I wasn't an Alabama fan at all um but again he that's a whole another story but he went he ended up taking that scholarship going to the league my son spent four years his final year became the Orange Bowl MVP he letter all three years played actually his freshman year so yeah had wonderful career at Florida but things just never was easy in fact his little league offensive line wasn't good his middle school career he didn't play running back his high school offensive line wasn't the best his college offensive line wasn't the best and so now I'm super excited to see what his talents will look like uh once he transitions into a playing role next year with the Chiefs because this will be the first time he'll be able to H have an offensive line that's really stellar and then he got drafted by the Jets in 2020 that offensive line was building so now next year uh you got Clyde Edward air who is uh in his final year of his contract yeah and then you got uh McKennon who's a vet who's kind of Asian out so we don't know if they're going to bring him back or not um but we do know that you have L Michel per who's now under contract so let me re let me rewind a little bit so with the Chiefs he came over after being cut from the Jets okay the Jets cut him after two years um the Jets had Adam gase at the time when he was drafted and then they fired Adam gase and brought in Salah from San Francisco quick question what round what round was he drafted for the so so the uh parents can kind of follow this oh so ended up being drafted pick 120 in the fourth round okay fourth round pick years during Co yeah okay so again getting it all the way out of the mud uh his first year he spent playing games with no fans then he went on to play his second year he injured his ankle so uh third year solid comes in then of course he draft drafts a running back uh bring his guys in fourth year he drafts another running back by the name of Bree Hall so that leaves us in the back of the running back room right so at the end of training camp the CH the Jets cutting his morale is low knowing he has all of the talent in the world but it's just not working out with people seeing him as a fit for what they're trying to do um and then he ended up going through this phase of where you having a try out for teams I don't I know if if parents or people understand this but once you get cut you have to try out an audition for teams that are interested uh your agent calls you tells you okay the Indianapolis Colts are interested um and and you don't have a choice you have to go you have to put your talent on showcase so he went to after being cut by the Jets Indianapolis called him um he didn't want to go to Indianapolis to be quite honest with you yeah uh Houston Kyle he had to sit in the in a waiting room or in the cafeteria for three hours for someone to come see him and work him out after staying overnight for a flight no sleep um and several a host of other teams called it he ended up Landing in Philadelphia after all of that okay Philadelphia signed him on to the practice squad they cut him in a week because they need roster space for somebody else yeah after Philadelphia cut him he went back home to Fort Lauderdale that's where his house is and uh God was all time the Miami Dolphins signed him to the practice squad okay so had a wonderful time in Miami uh facility 25 minutes from the house uh spent that season on practice squad Miami I think exited the playoffs maybe the second week um after the Miami Dolphins exited the playoffs uh uh the Kansas City Chiefs hopped on him immediately and wanted to sign him to their practice squad okay stayed on their practice squad for a year um and then ended up uh going in the training camp last man on the depth chart at running back um behind the undrafted free agent um got his opportunity in pre-season and went slap off yeah uh got his opportunity went slap off and uh then ended up getting moved as the the he was basically the fourth running back behind Pacho elair and McKennon okay so they only Kansas City only took three running backs on that 52 man roster at the start of the this past year yeah so then I think jet ended up getting hurt uh later on in the season and Clyde got sick and he got his chance and they used him three times you get three times as a practice squad member to get called up before they have to sign you okay after that third time McKennon ended up hurting his uh growing pulling his tearing is growing and that's when L Michel per got his shot and uh today that's what you see week 18 he ended up having a over a 100 yards a purpose um and now he's pretty much a staple uh um unless I mean you know he's a staple for the 52 man roster next year he's on contract until the end of next year and all I can say is God is good because it was a long journey he's he's a true what you call a true journeyman in the NFL and not even just the NFL but his entire career he's just taken the long route and every time he prevails so shout out to him for his uh perseverance man I couldn't I couldn't be more thankful for more for a persevering child man no no that story is crazy and it's well it would be crazy to the the people listening in right now for me that's normal because right I I've trained these guys I understand bouncing from the teams going in at year four running a 40 for a team like Dy bro like we playing football why am I running a 40 like come in make sure I'm healthy do you like what you see or or not but hey the crazy thing is is the Colts was the only one that made him run the 40 but you're right when he ran when he was asked to run the 40 it was like what you know like they asking me to run a 40 so like you said why am I running 40 year four there I had a guy in year eight have to run a 40 14 after being a starter they like no we still want to see how fast you are dang BR you can't just look at the film and note but but yeah it it's crazy but it's a shout out to him and a testament to him of the hard work throughout life got him ready for the hard work and the ups and downs that he'll need to go through in the NFL and that's like how me and you have talked about stop pulling your kid out of situations that aren't favorable to them now once the Situation's over move to a different team but in the middle of that season as long as they're not hurting your kid or disrespecting your kid let your kid finish because you pull your kid out too many one day he might be in L Michael's um seat in the NFL and he won't know how to fight through that you can't just pull yourself out the NFL there's nowhere else to go so when you've done that over and over B overl look me I had to do this in high school now when it happens in the league I've done it a million times and I know how to fight through this and I'm prepared for these ups and downs um bro for real we went to UCLA I flew him to California four times for UCL see him they never offered him yeah and the running backs that they offered I don't even know where they are today yeah it be like that too like they're no longer nowhere you know and at the time he was coming out there was a kid named Dylan Moses that was the man yeah I remember that name Dylan plays for the Memphis I don't even know some team in the usfl yeah um so it's just again like you said don't pull them let him go through some things and perseverance the cream will always rise to the Top If they really like that facts every every time to um to end this give the parents one it could be just words or advice or whatever you want to end it with but give them just that last bit of things for their child to do we talked about a lot of good things but let them know hey if you have a kid right now that is in elementary this is what I would do it could be from the training to school to whatever if you have a child right now that's starting out in youth football it's two two to three things that I would do yeah number one is I would keep them involved in something active consistently there is no magic cookbook uh this this journey is a very grueling journey and it requires Relentless um effort and Relentless consistency uh number two um I would say allow your village to nurture your child get some good people around you and once you assign them to whatever their responsibilities are with helping your child trust them and get out the way uh and number three uh again just be positive when they're at facilities like like yours DP uh stay out of the way let let the trainer do his job let the coach do his job and you talk to him on the way home talk to him before practice talk to him after practice and be encouraging uh don't get in the way uh make sure that what you have going on emotionally doesn't get in the way of what they have going on physically and emotionally because you got to understand they have a mind as well they have emotions as well so they're going to and this is this is the most important thing and I'm going to end right here parents kids hear your phone conversations when they're in the back seat so if you're on the phone with your friend talking about the coach talking about how he this and that then they hear it and then they develop their own uh understanding of what you just said and they start to adapt feelings like yours so there's no way you can tell me that a seveny old doesn't like the coach he doesn't like the coach because you don't so if you have anything negative to say about the people that you assigned to nurture your kid because you got to understand you took him to that Park you took him to that trainer so if you take him to the trainer and it's some going the way you don't want to go wanted to go have those conversations away from your child because they need to be in a positive mind State the entire time man no th those are bars right there those are gems man um and that's one of the biggest thing like said we'll end it on that but that's one of the biggest things is you expect your kid to play hard and work hard after hearing oh this coach terrible he don't like my son I don't like him well kids especially nowadays they know everything you talking about time they in the back seat listen to everything you say they gonna go to practice with an attitude and they gonna have run and because they know even subliminally they're trying to be a kid and do it right but sublimely they know my mom and daddy don't like him they don't respect him so as a kid I'm forming like you said my own thoughts on it and I'm losing respect without even knowing it because I'm hearing it in the back seat or at the house or from the stands you don't know what you're doing coach well dang he doesn't know what I'm doing so why should I be trying hard so don't like what he's doing why should I exactly that's bars right there man I appreciate you for your time this morning we'll be jumping back on to do uh several more of these but I really appreciate you from jumping on because parents needed to hear a lot of this and for your son to be a Super Bowl champ they need to hear a Super Bowl champ don't mean it was easy no usually it means it was a very hard road to get to where it was if I got all the way there it was a lot of this it's not this to get there so I appreciate your time and just the information you gave to everybody um today man for sure appreciate it DP no problem have a good one go cheese yes sir
