49ers Update: The roster heading into Nashville

all right so my 24 hours of very strenuous travel is over it took me longer to get from Santa Clara to San Francisco yesterday then it took me to get from San Francisco to Nashville last night so the second part of the travel 24 hours went a whole lot more smoothly all napped done with the red eyee ready to talk about the 49ers roster headed into Nashville hello from Nashville by the way it is 2 12:00 p.m over here that means it's just afternoon can call this a lunch with Lombardi without food here on the I can't say the East Coast I could say in the central time zone in the South the 49ers are going to be taken off in a couple hours they're going to get to the hotel in Nashville around 8 o'clock tonight then the game is tomorrow evening I believe 7 o'clock Central 5:00 pm Pacific so what should you watch in that game well you should obviously be paying close attention to how this 49ers roster is going to shake out I also wrote in the athletic and it came out this morning five players to watch in the 49ers preseason game against the Tennessee Titans and that is something that I should probably put on the screen right now so we're going to grab that there's a nice picture of D Winters headlining this piece because I think d Winters is one of the players that fans have heard so much hype about from the 49ers themselves there he is 53 where's Navaro Bowman's old number but fans have heard so much hype about him from the players themselves Fred Warner of course said that D Winters uh performed maybe the best out of any player had the best OTAs of anybody on the 49ers roster as far as the strides that he was able to make then we watched the video of D locking down Christian mcaffrey might have been a little bit grabby on that one-onone drill but he still got the job done in coverage when you look at the roster then uh you see that right linebacker position you could see that that third linebacker spot is currently up for grabs because Dre Greenlaw is out meaning Campbell dandre Campbell is the two and then is the three gonna be Demetrius Flanigan Foles he's been banged up recently or can it be D Winters Jaylen Graham has also been getting some opportunities so when I consider these preseason games I look at the fact that you can't tackle during the practices you can't tackle Fully live to the ground the very first chance to tackle and to break tackles is going to be tomorrow night so we're gonna get a chance to see D Winters try to tackle people Jaylen Graham try to tackle people then we're gonna get to see the line the running backs break tackles so somebody like Cody Sher first chance to break tackles Bobby Turner talked about how important these preseason games are for evaluation so up and down the roster there are going to be opportunities for bubble guys to make moves starting tomorrow and the most famous 49er right now Brock pie one could argue that Brandon auk has been getting more headlines but I think that the quarterback is always more famous especially when he's as good as he is but the most famous 49er right now Brock perie he really launched his big to make the 53 man roster in a preseason game at Minnesota in 2022 so when you look at who's in that Brock birdie position right now on the 2024 roster that 2022 Brock birdie spot it is this guy over here Tanner morai hasn't had all too much of an opportunity during practices because they're are limited reps to go along around when there's a battle for the second quarterback spot that's happening right now between Josh dobs and Brandon Allen but Tanner morai is going to get significant snaps in this first pre-season game against the Tennessee Titans and he can show that he's a gamer just like Brock pie did in 2022 and then all of a sudden you can start having conversations about Tanner morai potentially staying in the building as far as the running back position well they Cod Raiders impressed them look how much pink there is shaded here at the running back position those are all injuries that the 49ers are dealing with with so mcaffrey Mitchell gendo Patrick Taylor that means that you've got Jordan Mason available Matt breida available Cody Sher available and kesan vaugh who they just signed available so big opportunity for somebody like Cody shrer he's likely gonna get a nice chunk of of snaps in this football game moving forward to the receiver position I mean we've been talking about iuk so much nothing new on that front quite literally Diana Rini on uh her podcast said this by the way about Brandon iuk Brandon auk wants to be there meaning San Francisco or the Bay Area Santa Clara to be technical he wants to play for San Francisco he moved his family out there in offseason they've settled down the reason I say nothing new is because that's exactly what Brandon iuk said a little bit over a month ago when he said my family is here I want to be here there's a social media post I think it went through the iuk daily that account anyway uh that continues to be the leading uh Topic at at the rumor mail the Brandon iuk situation but we're here to talk about the 49ers roster as it stands right now I mentioned this at SFO last night the 49ers can start finding Brandon auk if he's not ready to play in this game which I I don't think he will be uh 785 ,000 it's a lot I don't know if they're going to play that kind of hard ball we're still trying to gauge exactly where the 49ers are as far as determining whether or not to put Brandon onuk in a box but do not expect to see him on the field now it's gonna be interesting Will He travel with the team I I doubt that as well but we're on Uncharted Territory here so why don't we just wait back wait back kick back wait and see what happens Debo Samuel's not going to play either Jan Jennings a starter he won't play Jennings is from this area covered his football camp a couple weeks ago I think that I can uh maybe repost that that video that we made with Jawan Jennings I might actually even find that here in a second um Jacob coing is back from his injury so we might have our first chance to see the 49ers rookie out of Arizona piol has been dealing with the shoulder it would surprise me if he played just due to that Conley obviously a veteran won't play maybe somebody like T Trent Taylor has to pick up a lot of the slack for the 49ers Taylor lives here as well offseason it's just going to be a bunch of guys that live here in Nashville playing Jordan Mason Trent Taylor obviously Jawan Jennings is is from the area but he's not going to play in this football game but it's just funny because they also signed kesan vaugh uh the running back who is from here so it seems like they're just focusing on locals to be able to play in front of their families during this game all kidding aside I think that's just coincidental but receiving position is probably going to be uh looking at guys who uh are not prominent as far as 53 man roster projections go chosen Anderson is technically not on the team yet the 49ers have to make another roster move to make room for him the 49ers did bring in a new punter and that new punter used to punt for the Steelers that was a according to AR uh that's it's Presley Harin III and that's according to Ari marof my sports update on Twitter Presley Harvin III punted for Pittsburgh over the past few seasons and the 49ers have needed a punter to take the place of Mitch wishnowski who's got some knee irritation so Presley Arvin III aboard for one preseason game I'm not quite sure how big that paycheck's going to be but he'll make a little bit of money for it we'll go ahead and put him on the roster right now as depth behind Mitch wishnowski and with that and with the addition of Robbie chosen Anderson the 49ers are going to need to make two more roster transactions to make those two transactions official they haven't announced the Harvin signing and they haven't announced the uh signing of chosen Anderson but we know that those two are going to happen it's just a matter of what the corresponding move can will be now it's very possible that in the case of Robbie Anderson or chosen Anderson it's very possible that because he hasn't practiced with the 49ers yet they're not going to throw him into any game action with the 49ers yet which means they don't have to officially sign him until after the game so they're gonna have a look at a lot of these guys on the bubble during the game on Saturday and then they'll cut one or two players based on the game at least one and then sign chosen Anderson after that in the case of Presley Arvin I thiri the new punter well the 49ers are going to need to make a roster move now because they need him for this game if Mitch wisnowski has got the knee irritation and C kick so keep an eye on who the 49ers might part ways with over the course of the next few hours before this game to see how they're going to fit that in the 90 man roster currently what you're seeing right now has 92 players on it tight end room Mason Pine I'm really excited to see him in a a preseason game I think that he is probably destined for the 49ers practice squad but he's obviously got to secure that and this will be his first NFL action somebody like cam latu it may be a last gasp for cam latu who hasn't really wowed anybody at training camp hasn't dropped as many passes as last year but he has made some mistakes and uh yes he's a third round pick but the 49ers have shown over the past couple years of willingness to move on from third round picks after the second training camp if it isn't good and if Cam lotu continues to underwhelm then the 49ers will have no choice but to to move on it's going to be a crowded 53-man roster Dominic puny and the first team offensive line and I've updated the roster here to illustrate that obviously Trent Williams is not with the team right now so Jaylen Moore the second is slotting in for him but Dominic Poney banks at left guard Brendle at Center and Colton mckivitz at right tackle are all expected to play for the 49ers at least for the start of this game because they want to get their first team offensive line as part of uh the audition to start the preseason they want these guys working together all right the 49ers have made the course responding moves just in time perfect 49ers have announced a couple roster moves so let me get this for you they signed defensive lineman Jonathan Garvin and punter Presley Harvin III okay that's just what I just said in order to make room on the roster they placed Austin Bryant on ir and released Logan Thomas so that's it for the Logan Thomas era turns out that the 49ers weren't weren't happy with the progress that he that he made or or couldn't make blocking wise 55 catches for Washington last year but as I had reported they needed to get more blocking out of him it was a different type of system in San Francisco than in Washington where blocking comes first for these tight ends and it's a tough technique to learn these guys have to be extended offensive lineman so Logan Thomas is the 49ers cut to make room alongside the Austin Bryant IR designation that makes room for Presley Harvin I third and Jonathan Garvin they still have not signed chosen Anderson so what I predicted about two or three minutes ago I think is going to come true they'll wait to sign chosen Anderson until after this game so here we go Austin Bryant is a defensive lineman who's going to be headed to IR that likely ends his season unless they use one of the two return designations for him We'll erase Austin Bryant here and we'll move Austin Bryant to IR where Drake Jackson now is as well Jackson season is finished and we'll also take Logan Thomas erase him from here and now the 49ers only have three tight ends on the inside of my 53 man picture are they only going to carry three or is Cam latu gonna be the fourth Jake tonas by the way has had not had a bad training camp so keep an eye out for Jake Tas Jonathan Garvin is the defensive lineman that the for 49ers have signed I'll very briefly tell you about Jonathan Garvin was with the Packers from 2020 to 2022 out of the NFL since then with the Birmingham stallions this year in the UFL Jonathan Garvin out of Miami a seventh round pick just like Tatum bethon he going to be playing some defensive end for the 49 miners he's about 260 PBS 64 about 260 so we can go ahead and put Garvin into the Austin Bryant spot they just put Bryant on IR Justin Garvin veteran takes his place so there's your 49ers roster 91 total people on there but that's just my I'm cheating a little bit right I'm I'm getting ahead of myself chosen Anderson will be on this team but they're not going to officially announce it until after after this first preseason game wasn't out of practice yesterday either because he's not officially signed yet that's the 49ers roster heading into Nashville perfect time for a roster update from the 49ers we can keep on moving through quickly here on defense what do we expect at the defensive line position tomorrow well some Kalia Davis maybe T McGill Evan Anderson looking forward to seeing him Shaquelle Brown the former Titan I think a lot of these backup defensive tackles who are vying for that final rotation spot I think it's going to be a big day for them Robert Beal Jr too he's vying for that fourth and final defensive end rotational spot important day for him linebacker I can't wait to see Tatum bethon out of Florida State this is a guy who's his defensive coordinator said he's trying to take people's heads off in college ball and you've got to make sure that he stays restrained enough to not pick up penalties and stuff like that it's kind of like Dre green law but it's a trade-off that that you like to make bethon not great in coverage tight hips I think that that was something that was agreed upon you know even on his college tape and in one-on ones he struggled a bit in coverage as well but he is the type of player it's not really fair to him until you can go tackle live to the ground because he's an enforcer type so look out for Tatum bethon the 49ers seventh round pick at that linebacker position out of Florida State he's going to get a chance to play tomorrow I wonder what they're going to do at the DB positions are let ronard green Malik Mustafa those guys play I would assume so we're not going to see Ward we're not going to see yadam by the way yadam has has been hurt lately it's missed a couple practices we can shade him there in pink not gonna see Lenor I doubt that you see Jer Brown so you probably see a lot of Malak Mustafa a lot of Renardo green darell lutter Jr has been out of practice but working off on the side in his jersey so I don't know if he'll be back in time for the game you'll definitely see a lot of Ambry a lot of Samuel wack those are Bubble guys now at this point and we'll see if Tracy Walker the the new safety is able to suit up for the 49ers Jaylen Mahone by the way speaking of the Nashville connections Jaylen Mahoney went to college in Vanderbilt so he's gonna have a chance to uh make a move potentially for the practice squad back near his old stomping grounds all right that's it that's a look at the 49ers roster wanted to give you guys a quick little
