welcome back to the Boston sports brothers podcast hey yo boys good to see you ony go let's go week three here we go uh we just had on Karen Gan an unbelievable episode like we had the chills at the end of that in terms of just getting to childood Memories her experience child Ood memories some of the events that she's been able to cover so fantastic interview with Karen gerian from masslive.com coming up on the episode in just a bit as always we're going to dive right into around town so many different things to touch on uh here on the Boston sports brothers podcast socks B's C's news on all three fellas let's Jump Right In Patriots talk for our listeners we're gonna really dive into uh lots of uh in-depth coverage with Karen Garian so Patriots talk on around town going to come with the Karen Garian interview right after we talk about the socks Sammy stats [ __ ] [ __ ] oh God the Astros oh God they won the series Kansas City but it has not been pretty over the weekend and heading here into a new week take it away B ma said as ma said today what an ass pounding that we took this weekend um it's just 40 strikeouts I mean there was conflict between players and fans and just everything you don't want to see at all um we have pictures going down in the you know uh the stretch of it and it SP like really ugly baseball because me of all people was looking forward to this this series up against Houston because it really is Talent against Talent um and I was really looking to see them do something at home and they just blew it they just blew it um with that being said I I can't fault the players I mean you can fault the players but at the same time the front office did nothing at the trade deadline to put them in a position to help them I mean this is a team is competing with the Red Sox I mean that is competing with the Yankees they're competing with the Orioles they're right there six and a half games out Dy who's that Sims guy he blows lcas Sims I feel so bad for him that's not even him I feel so bad for that I didn't watch the gam but I saw I saw the L next to his name many times this weekend thing with the socks though like we're seeing who like they're they're playing above where they should be right now we're seeing who they are they're one against the Dodgers the Yankees the Astros post allar break like those are contending teams the socks are just not there Unfortunately they just one like they're just not there it sucks sucks that's what Dan Jonesy calls them it's an illusion of contention he's been saying it all year long it's like they looks like they're there and then they're just and then so I mean see you had insult to injury this weekend with the whole Durant situation which I I think we have to touch on it's it's really unfortunate what happened in this day and age for that word to be used in any sort of setting yeah he issued his apology the Red Sox issued an apology he's suspended for two games but the the thing that just like bothers me is that it just plays right into this stereotype in Boston that that the city has with the racism and the homophobia and the like we I I think that everybody here obviously is extremely respectful of everyone and you can whatever you want to do in your life do in your life as long as it's not bothering other people but when that when when that stuff happens and it and you're a player representing the city and it says Boston on your shirt or Boston on your hat it's just like it's so unfortunate and now that this all gets brought back up again in terms of all being this kind of city where like most of my experiences when it comes to being in Boston are positive but it [ __ ] sucks and if you strike out six times in a series and a fan says to you go get a tennis racket walk it off walk it off but but I think that's but I think that's that's who Durant like I hate to say it but I think Duran has a little bit of a um he's a little bit of a hot head like he this is not the first time he's interacted with fans Kansas City it's just kind of like it's tough obviously he shouldn't have said what he said it's like the worst thing in the it's just disgusting but it's not the first time he's done like said something to a fan and I that just unfortunately I don't know if that's just him Big E here Big E here and like one thing that I would like to just say about this is like Joshua you said like it was disgusting there's no place for that so you know he's a professional he needs to act like one and this is either going to be a giant wakeup call for him or it's not and if it's not then sadly like his time in Boston may not be long and I hope that that's not the case because he's a talented player but I'd rather have a player that doesn't have a head so Jared dur figure it out be better and if you're not bye-bye house yeah this leader in the clubhouse this is a guy who's you know having one his best season uh so far uh he won the the All-Star MVP um he was he's really just making a name for himself and then all of a sudden you read the papers and it's not making a good name for himself anymore it's kind of going the reverse Direction and uh like all of you said I totally agree it's just uh it's really disappointing um with that it's it's just not a good situation there yeah but it it puts it's what Gabe just said in a nutshell you know his name was becoming something of being a great player for the team and this is what's going to stick with him for the rest of this season and who knows how long uh all right some other things socks wise The Big Three ker being called up what the [ __ ] is this all about all right so so we got our Guys Portland the big the big hopefully this is you know one The Big Three would be Kyle teal um Anthony and our guy Marcelo mayor are going from doublea Portland all the way up to triaa Wester who socks you might see them at the end of the year bearing injuries if we completely fall out of it or beginning of next year we could probably hope to see them next year I want to say maybe midseason they'd probably project to pop up are the socks waving the white flag right now is that a sign is this the first sign of the uh of what's to come for the rest of the year Dan as as Dan shonesy said all season long and unfort I kind have to agree with them um but like the optimistic red then no no no no no they're going to be fine it is the illusion of contention and there's just like this like sheet and um he said it perfectly he thinks Alex cor played his cards right uh to get the contract that he got um and now that he's got it he doesn't talk trash about the team like he did before uh you can hear it in the interviews and stuff uh he's coming up with excuses or here just FL like like lay players flat out now he's coming up with excuses for them so it'll be interesting yeah here sorry sorry I was gonna say I feel like I feel like the team right now you know that picture of the dog with the fire and he's sitting there with the table drinking the mug being like everything is fine that's where I feel like the team is right now like they're not admit that there's a fire going on but like we can all see it it's like pretty apparent we're not they know they're they're building they know they're building internally yeah they won't say it t yeah I mean Rangers and Orioles this week if they can get back on track and win these series like as we've said time and time again if you can stay in the race we'll stay interested but like weeks like this in the past couple weeks really since the All-Star break has just been not what you were looking for the pitching has has fallen off imens can I chime in on that for a second Jam at here um the the pitching is just like I did some research um looking post allar break they given up 47 home runs in 21 games with an 8 and 13 record and cutter Crawford oh my God it's actually pretty incredible this is like you have to be really crappy to do this 13 home runs and four starts post All-Star break that's they're all coming off off speed or majority of them are coming off off speed stuff which is what Andrew Bailey's pitching philosophy is so honestly fix the this team fix the [ __ ] pitching and you're not terrible like that's all you got to do get a couple starters next year get number one Bonafide number one and you're good to go they had is not a number one he won't be a number one he's gonna be a number two and number Best Start break to make the playoffs and they're they're gonna fall way short so socks are struggling seems like the dog days of August have finally caught up to them and just all we can hope for is that they can turn it around it's a week by- week thing you know like they could go five in one or six in one this week and we'd be having a completely different discussion next week so exactly but it it doesn't look good um and with who know it you you gotta win and if they don't it's it's game over and we're not even having any sort of conversation about September other than the big three in Worster right now so socks we'll check in on them as always each week hopefully a playoff run but really not looking that way now but you know who did go on a run boys Team USA to the gold medal game vers USA USA USA USA bring home the HB real Steph Curry yeah little bit CRA with the Celtics in this segment of around town so combination of obviously talking about the the Celtics players so the gold medal game uh fantastic but let's rewind to the game vers Serbia because the comeback that they had that game was spectacular LeBron had that look in his eyes that we've all seen before versus Celtics and God damn it wasn't against us was against us finally what you were looking for for yourselves is a team you were rooting for so him and Curry go off at the end take down joic and all the [ __ ] uh those [ __ ] [ __ ] the gold we don't want to play a six foot T Wing against a swing heavy team St gold medal game Curry unbelievable at the end uh gold medal for Team USA fourth in a row you know LeBron KD and Curry probably their last Olympics Tatum really not not a big contributor compared to what he did in 2021 doesn't play Big E is Steve Kerr still in the Penalty Box yeah I think he's got to be in there I mean how do you have an all all-nba first team player not play in two of your games right and like granted I know there's a lot of Talent on that team uh but he's got to get some more minutes than what he actually got now that being said if they're trying to save save face for him and there's something else going on behind the scenes I've heard that some people think that he may have a rest issue and may not necessarily need surgery but may need to give some rest you know maybe they were doing him a little bit of a solid but from an Outsiders view not having any insiders knowledge yeah I think we got to be a little disappointed with how much Jason Tatum played now with that being said he he is one of very few players to have won an NBA title and an Olympic gold in the same off season so him Derek white and Drew holiday got to give them their flowers and especially Drew true holiday I think he is The Unsung player on the USA basketball team I know that they said that that was Devin Booker from Steve Kerr Steve K cerr you're in the py box so with all due respect not really GNA respect your opinion here but Drew holiday literally does everything he is the glue guy he also is money from the corner from three so I would just love to see Drew get his due because I really don't see anyone talking about him and um I just want to say drew thank you for your play uh with the US basketball team yeah and thank you to the Milwaukee Bucks for uh trading him that too uh Steph Curry to to watch what he did and for him to have that signature moment I mean we saw pretty much verbatim that happen back in 2022 N Night afterward uh we we yeah yeah plotty just just as you said it's so nice to have these players not have that look in their eye against the bosses Celtics I mean watching Curry just splash those threes I think it was like four threes in in like a matter of who knows how long but like two minutes I mean those were the most incredible shots and it's just like I can finally sit back and like enjoy this a little bit you know it was put my hand up it was and he can we also talk a little bit about France and how close France is France really is on the precipice we talk I was talking yabu with uh with a few folks and someone was like this guy's going to be in the NBA and I was like well he was there I I wouldn't be surprised if he gets a call in the offseason you know I know feba is very different than the NBA but the dude was playing overseas in China for years he clearly has developed he was a leader on the FR on the French team let's get him back not necessarily Boston but just get him back in the NBA I think be a d lineman that guy with you know would love that guy if you know what I mean real you know what I mean that Caboose has got no not got no give yeah how do you say caboose in frish [Laughter] but one other thing to know is on the women's side as well USA Women's Basketball got to give them their flowers as well with uh I believe eight executive gold medal we put out on social media if you're 35 or younger you've seen this team consistently win gold 61 game winning streak and Diana terasi Yukon legend of the game uh six gold medals I can't believe she's played in that's 24 years worth of Olympics that's insane wild a huge moment for Britney grinder too let's all not forget that Britney grinder was in prison um in Russia and this was the first time she played overseas since coming home and while she wasn't you know a world beater you know putting up you know 30 points and 10 rebounds still a contribut on this team and you know really powerful moment to see her and to see her reaction with her wife and her family there so want to give props to Britney grinder and uh cool to see that she's back as an Olympian and a gold medalist too yeah great to see great to see both and and you know Olympics wise us and China tied with gold medals I believe but us ran away with the overall medal count taking away uh you know the the the winning um I got a question for everyone here J Matt chiming in um do you guys like FEA versus NBA what's your take on that like it's a definitely a lot more contact it's uh it's not like flashy basketball like the NBA what what's your take what do you think like it I love FEA basketball uh solely for it brings back that like hardnose NBA play from like back in the 80s you know when Larry Bird was getting fights with guys and you know fists were flying and not necessarily that I want that in the NBA today but uh not that they like to fight anyways uh but you know it's it's it's fun to see a little bit more physicality in the game um I think it you know it forces the US to kind of change the way that they play too and I I think they kind of thrive in in those situations as well Big E here I like the physicality of the FBA you couple that with the NBA on NBC theme and it brings me back to like the early 2000s and I'm like let's go the game was so much more physical then I'm not saying that the game is bad now uh the game is wonderful in the NBA I love the NBA but there's something a little extra and FBA where that physicality is just like a couple notches higher and it's noticeable you can see it it's it's a great it's great to see the international we talked about this last week in terms of like the players in their countries and how much it means to them and I I think that you can see you can see how passionate these players were in those crunch time moments at the end of these games and the end of these events um really really cool to see and I I I mean basketball-wise the other big story this week is uh John Henry I'm about to take his way away the [ __ ] ice machine in the because if he buys the Celtics right [ __ ] the fact of him doing that just please anybody but John Henry anybody here can you guys imagine if LeBron becomes a part owner of the Celtics is that so yeah just about to say how does that work he he would have to do something I think yeah how does it work with Tom Brady being an announcer right now and being a he's an announcer he's not active player that has nothing to do with uh yeah he have a did he have a piece while he was still playing or no that happened all afterwards I think after okay Tom's been out for a while now he's almost he's almost up for I mean he's you know he's getting there he's still got a couple more years but obviously first ballot we love you Tom be they should put him in right now love Tom they should love you Tommy they should welcome on the podcast any anytime to our listeners when the when the topic of the goat comes up we're going to devolve and just be like you know we love you Tom Brady we not saying we're all Fanboys but like when you grow up in this area and you witness the greatness that we saw how can you not be have to be I mean it was it was 20 years Elation and joy so dominance and and somebody who brought pure relation and joy to their job every day who's moving on to greener Jack Edwards uh a replacement named Gabe who's who's taking over for Mr Edwards so yeah talking Bruins here uh no player news per se uh no San contract still but we do have the new Jack Edwards in the booth Jud Sarat will be joining us now congrats Jud that's right so he will be joining uh and Andy Brickley um the color analyst for the in the next Booth uh he has called or I should say Jud Sarat has called um games on 985 Sports Hub um for quite some time since the 2017 2018 season so uh Jud Sarat bringing in uh bringing in some I think it's a great choice personally um I think that you can kind of I'm sure they I'm sure the Brun organization did their due just diligence and kind of uh kind of sweep the the nation for someone a voice but um in the end I think going with a homegrown kind of guy um was the right choice and we'll we'll definitely hear it uh this upcoming season Big E here I think the continuity is going to be great for people who listen on the radio just to be listening on nessen with Jud coming in Jud also was the uh play-by-play guy for the Chicago Blackhawks for a long period of time before he came over to do the Bruins so you know that run that the Blackhawks went on in you know the mid 2010s or the 2010s just in general he was there for all of that as well as you know the recent Bruin runs too so guy is tried and true and excited to see what he can do and I think the question I'd ask you Gabe is who do we hear as a replacement on 985 it's a it's a great question I believe Bobby beers beers is still gonna be calling games over there um I don't know we've been talking behind the scenes a little bit uh it seems like Ryan Johnson it might be uh is a popular pick amongst the the Boston Sports Bros here um what about any anybody else have any other uh thoughts on that I I like Ryan John J Matt here by the way um I like Ryan Johnston I think he's um I think he's great he he knows a lot about hockey like sneaky knows a lot about hockey he's he does the hockey uh show I believe on Saturday mornings I think with beersy um during the season so you know he does a weekly show he knows his stuff I believe he used to call games um in his past he has called G so um he already works for 95 The Sports Hub so that's obviously a seamless transition um but I I don't know I think there's uh a lot of potential there rooting for Ryan Johnson he's been doing that hockey show on 985 for many years and and knows it inside and out there's there's I'm sure many other worthy candidates but if there's somebody that comes to mind off the bat it's it's definitely him in that seamless transition with the whole 985 experience as well as Gabe mentioned nothing on the contract situation San wise uh training camp coming soon and in preseason as we talked about last week and you know we're I'm excited for the winter sports I I think this weekend you know really was like all right not that Summer's wrapping up but it's like we're you know I was at a bar and and the bar turn was like I haven't seen you since the end of June and it's like I guess that's like six seven weeks ago at this point you know so it'll be here before we know it and while the cold and all that nonsense that comes with that time of year the the the winter sports and the success of the teams hopefully as as we talked about with Karen uh you know we we don't know what's going to happen with that being said with in terms of Karen before I jump into Karen lots of Karen there any uh anything else in terms of Bruins or Olympics before we talk about our interview with Karen Gan all right I don't think so on my end we talked a lot last week Olympic wise uh we recapped the metal count and uh fantastic performance for the US 40 40 40 40 plus gold 40 plus silver 40 plus bronze uh jokovic Scotty Sheffer some of those big- time athletes walking away with their gold medals respectively uh kind of excited to move on from the Olympics so it's just like now let's let's get into football season let's start looking ahead to the sports here that that we're going to be following a little bit more closely and so uh one sport that we're following closely obviously is football and the entire situation with the New England Patriots and at this point in time we're going to dive right into our interview with Karen Garian of mass live and here is our interview with the fantastic Karen Gan welcome to the Boston sports brothers podcast we now welcome on our second guest and one of our favorite writers in all of Boston Sports media and journalism it is Karen Garian the 2022 winner of the Massachusetts sports writer of the Year award she's currently writing for masslive.com and was formerly with the Boston Herald for almost 40 years and she's been covering Boston Sports and the Patriots for that amount of time she also has a great podcast titled I on Foxboro that you can find on all the streaming platforms Karen we can't thank you enough for taking some time to join the Boston sports brothers tonight and I want to dive into something and I've been so happy that you've agreed to join us because there's a situation with Matthew judon that we've noticed over the past couple weeks um and it's that he's been using his social media from what we've seen in the middle of practice in preseason games like last week in the middle of the game he was posting that day he was on the pads at practice he posted and then came back out and had that conversation so is this something that has been talked about down in Foxboro has anybody else seen this happening um I think like I'm just speaking for myself but from my standpoint it's just a bad look if that's something he's doing well we've asked him about it and first off I want to say can I be a sister in this Brotherhood Club here you are the of course um we have asked him about it and uh last week in fact and he claims that he doesn't he doesn't he's not the guy who's responding on Twitter okay but again do you believe him or I mean wouldn't you want to be in charge of your account although I guess when you're a BigTime football player you have other people run certain things yeah that makes sense to me it's just a whether it's him or someone else like you got to be mindful of that that that that you're doing that during times that just don't make any sense right right but well I guess they didn't get the memo we'll have to we'll have to uh get an email into the inbox at some point excellent well we also want to talk that was that was sort of the the lead question that I've been stewing on for a couple weeks but uh all other brothers here have some questions for you and Big E Eric matowski is gonna dive into the first preseason game and Eric take it away my friend hey Karen Eric here uh just curious to get what some of your biggest takeaways from the first preseason game against Carolina were it was you know obviously a sloppy game we uh didn't see a lot of Drake may we saw a lot of bayy zappy and a lot of Joe Milton and what are you hoping to see in game two this week against Philly U more regulars playing I mean that you know it was so bad that there wasn't a lot to take away I mean the first string offense quote unquote played one series and they were gone okay okay we're GNA see a lot of Joe Milton no one series he was gone the guy who you expect to be gone bayy zappy plays seven series and it's like what can you glean from a player who's not in their plans I mean what do can you really learn not much if you asked me and then Joe Milton came in and kind of right on Q uh late in the game against the scrub of Scrubs look like a superstar so uh I don't know it was kind of a it was kind of a weird night uh from the perspective of trying to get a handle on the Patriots uh but you know their issues are still their issues their offensive line uh they still need tackle help and if you listen to Gerard Mayo they didn't want to put Drake May in another series you know they were going to put their backup offensive line in and they were like petrified of putting him out there with that line so that doesn't give you a good feeling um but all that being said I mean I think you know the defense looked good five sacks but again Carolina didn't play its starters so again how much can you really judge you know you can't and Joe Milton was playing against you and me so it's do you do you chalk that up to to sort of the first game almost like Jitters and and them wanting to be extremely cautious I don't know I mean I can't even I think if you listen to them they've had they have a plan they have a plan on how they want to use people they have a plan on their quarterbacks and they're just kind of adhering to the plan I think in tomorrow's game uh not game The Joint practice session with Philadelphia I think that's where they think that they can learn a lot you know assuming there's no fights um because you're you're really going you're going going up against you know Philadelphia isn't going to hold out their their top players you know they're all going to get reps that's the whole point of the whole thing you know they're number ones going against your number ones uh you know same thing with oneon-one drills so you get to see a little more and you get to see it for quite a bit of time as opposed to one series seven seven snaps and you're out the door so I think they think they're going to learn quite a bit more uh with the joint practices and perhaps game two well I certainly hope so because you know last game was it's tough to watch at certain times and obviously it's a preseason game it's the first one but you also mentioned that their issues are still their issues and I think there's been a lot of chatter out there that this wide receiver group is one of the weakest in the NFL do you feel like there's anyone in this group that can turn some heads this season especially with two rookies being added to the mix with Po and Baker yeah I do first off I mean I think pop Douglas is very good the issue with him is that he's so little that he's G he gets hurt and you know I was saying this to one of my colleagues today you know we see him back there Fielding punts and Fielding kickoffs i' said no I wouldn't have him do any of that stuff you know because he's actually one of their few receivers if he gets going will will cause a tension you know they'll defense are going to have to pay attention to him they don't have anyone else like that so I mean he can get open quickly which is probably you know he's going to be jacobe Brett's best friend because of that reason the line can't block if you have to pass you got to get get it to somebody who can get open really quickly so and that's that's what pop can do if he's hurt you take that away and you're going to see about a hundred sacks yeah the the offensive struggles for this team are are concern I think you know the defense is going to be there every week but as Eric was saying the the wide receiver rooms unproven if somebody goes down the depth is brutal uh obviously Juju gone this week so that's you know they're starting to make their moves there who do you see the I I think we've all agreed that there's four locks with poke uh Baker Douglas Kendrick Bourne depending on where he starts but who do you see rounding out the wide receiver group um probably KJ Osborne who they signed as a a free agent I I thought he started off slowly to camp but he's come on especially you know they've focused a lot now more on the Red Zone he he gets open and he makes plays in that area so you can't have you can't have enough of that um I think Jaylen rager has had a decent camp but he's a guy I want bringing the kicks back with the new kickoff Rule and he's a guy I'd put out there for punts too because you can sacrifice him you can't sacrifice pop Douglas and I think J Jaylen rager is pretty darn good at it so uh and he's also if you put him in the offense he gives you a bit of a speed element that they really don't I mean unless you call tawon thoron I mean tawon thoron is had a decent camp but is he going to stay healthy another one yeah um so you still need to have some speed and uh keeping rager kind of provides that I yeah it'll be interesting to see I would love to see if these next you know the joint practices the two preseason games that are ahead sort of dictate how that all shakes out but we want to we also want to talk about obviously there a whole new regime down in Foxboro so Gabe take it away in terms of how things have changed down there yeah uh hey Karen it's uh Gabe here um I just wanted to talk Vibes a little bit um I know you hang out down at training camp uh for every practice um how have uh how's the atmosphere been like uh under Gerard Mayo uh versus say Bill belich when you say atmosphere do you mean with among the players or just the vibe with the media and the head coach so I would say kind of uh whole of that like atmosphere between maybe fans uh watching if there are any fans watching practices um and also just kind of the how the players are are interacting on the field and uh kind of interacting with Gerard Mayo a little bit Yeah well I can tell you uh before Juju Smith Schuster left um way back in uh the mini camp that they had and we got to talk to him for a little bit he talked a lot about how the the vibe was different with gerro and I think I think you know there's less tension in the air or there's less I I don't know and and it's and it's by Design you know gerod doesn't you know wants to have a little bit of a light lighter atmosphere bill bellich um I think you know old school coach he Lo he thought tension was good and he thought players would Thrive if they all of them felt that you know their jobs are on the line every minute so I mean he was a tough hard-nosed old school coach who kind of ruled by fear and again that's not a bad thing that's how some coaches coach and many of them from his era um Gerard Mayo is more of a new age new school coach who while he was raised and brought up in Bill bich system coached by Bill coach with Bill I think he might have a better understanding of today's player that not everyone is yes or no sir players nowadays want explanations to things they they want to know why they're doing things and they and they want you know they want a a less they want a fun Act atmosphere right and I think and in some respects Gerard is trying to provide that what's interesting is you know in in that breath he is providing a better atmosphere but on the other hand he's had these guys in pads more way more than belich ever did so you know I was just going to ask how that translates onto the practice field uh that more laidback uh attitude maybe in the locker room well it seems like he's he's going hard on the practice right but I I do think the players enjoy being able to communicate with him and I think they they enjoy that he's upfront his door is always open they're not afraid to approach him they're not afraid to ask him a question um so I think you know in that sense it's a lot lighter and looser but again is that going to translate on the field is that going to translate into more wins big question I think the next big question in terms of wins is is this whole quarterback situation and how that's going to shake out because I think I think the the depth chart has been sort of predetermined here in terms of how the season's going to start but Josh matowski let's talk about the third overall pick hey Karen it's Josh here yeah I think this is uh one of the topics that everyone is the most interested in I mean this could be Make It or Break It for the next what five to 10 years for the Patriots potentially um so in your opinion I know we got to see only three pass attempts on uh last Thursday but how does Drake may look overall in your in your opinion I would say uneven but but again I I think a lot of that is expected I I think you've even seen it with the other rookie quarterbacks in their performances uh that we've seen in their pre preseason in games although they've gotten some of them have gotten a lot more reps but I think you do see the unevenness you see good plays you see some not so good plays you see some confusion and then you see oh yeah he gets it I think it's kind of typical rookie stuff um to this point but the issue with Drake May is because I think they've already decided how things are going to go they've already decided that J jacobe Brett is going to be the guy I mean Drake May is saddled with twos and threes you know he's like the number two he doesn't get the starting offensive line in practice he doesn't get the starting rece you know I mean he doesn't go against the the starting defense and I think it's just it's hard to really assess him in the environment that he has but it it could also be and I don't know this for a fact the coaching staff doesn't feel he's quite ready for it yet I don't know but might he be better with better players who knows it's it's such a tough situation down there because it's he's coming into a whole team that's trying to figure things out here for the first year with you know as you we've talked about the atmosphere and um just a completely different sense of how things are going down there but um he's learning a new system too whereas jacobe brassette knows the system having played for Alex velt he's trying to to change a lot he's trying to help improve his foot work he's trying to learn how to he didn't play Under Center in college so he's trying to learn how to play Under Center he's trying to learn how to read a defense I mean there's there's just so much going on you know with him and learning and figuring things out sometimes you can almost see it it's my foot as he's going through it and and and there's hesitation is did I did I use the right footwork did I drop back the right way did I do this right did I do that right I I think when he gets to to the point where like all that is cleared out of his brain and and it's just coming natural I think that's when you'll see the real Drake may I think we all gotta remember he's he's just 21 right exactly yeah Karen do you think that he'll see the field at all this season at any point um I would say yes I mean I can't promise that but no I think I can't promise it uh you want him to I would yeah of course because here's the deal this is they I it's like this is a rebuilding year and your the Patriots have to accept that it's rebuilding and I think they're approaching it like they want to win as many games as they can but by doing that again that's why jacobe brassette is starting you know because he's a competent veteran um and they think they have a good defense but their future is Drake May right so I don't know I just hope that they're developing him the right way but I also think I also think they're a little snake bit snake bit might not be the right word by what happened to uh ma oh think they have the roster around him or are they doing him would they be doing him a disservice by putting him in with the line that they have and you know would would he be seeing ghosts as you know another his personally if he's gonna be put in with the second line yeah he's gonna be seeing ghost I think ultimately what'll happen with the top line again they have to figure it out if if they can get somebody capable playing right tackle maybe that's a core for because that's the position he played maybe whoever they put at left tackle it's like you can you can help one side you can't help too you can have the running back chip on a pass play you can have the tight end help block you know help the left tackle out you get into real trouble if you have to help out both sides so that's what again they're trying to figure out can they trust one of the tackles and if they can you know they can kind of patch the other side together kind of thing I don't think Eagles this weekend what's that it'll be tough against the Eagles that's for sure yeah well again they are using it as a as kind of a litmus test I think you know but if me I'm I'm still plumx you you you pay Mike U all this money to keep him you give him essentially tackle money not the best tackle money but you pay the guy he basically bailed them out last year by moving over to right tackle he played a competent right tackle so if he can take up one of those places as I said you can send help to whoever's on the other side right and I think they've decided City sa is is a is a good enough guard and he's been okay find one more guard but again I'm not what do I know I'm I'm I'm just not like you've been down I'm just the girl who covers the team no no you've seen you've seen it all and You' you you've seen The Good the Bad and the Ugly and we we've been harping on some of the the Bad and the Ugly here to start but let's let's shift our focus a little bit I think uh one of the other things that we that we want to talk about is what what players on the team do you potentially see uh having success is there is there anyone that comes to mind I know we talked a little bit about pop Douglas but anybody else that you think might have a breakout season or shine well the given how the offense is designed yeah rre Stevenson because they're going to be really runhe heavy and uh he looks he looks look he's looked great in the practices and again if if they if they give him that little bit opening put it this way if the Run game can get going that will just help the pass game so much you can set up play action you know that buys the quarterback time there's like so much you can do if your run game is effective if your run game isn't effective they will be dead I mean there'll be like no hope so um but I do think uh I do think with [Music] and you know I don't know if you can count on him coming back this season um but I think you know I think the defense is going to be just fine and I put this way if they're not they're really gonna have a long season h i we can only hope that it's better than last year because by December it was tough sleding yeah so to um kind of wrap things up uh I mean interlace everyone's questions together um how how far do think this team this year can go is it going to be like just one of those kind of rebuild years where they're kind of muddling the boat or are they going to kind of maybe kind of sneak in well here's the best thing here's the best thing I think you can look forward to where they they should hope happens okay that they'll be competitive in all the games I mean I think they're going to start slowly I mean the schedule is just really tough but you know between new coach coaches new quarterback new system the teams they're playing against you know I think it's going to take them a while to all gel I think it's going to take him a while to get the offense going but I do think the the best thing that can happen is if they C they build momentum during the year and that they're really starting to look and play much better toward the end now maybe that's with jacobe or maybe that's with Drake may I would see say the best thing is if some Drake May takes over I don't know Midway three quarters of the way and then once he gets in if he's comfortable with everything and they start looking better and they start winning more games and they end on a on a positive note they can take that momentum into the following year I mean I've seen it happen I saw it happen when Parcels was here and took over a bad team and rebuilt and you know I think they lost like a ton of games in the beginning and then they they gather you know they started winning toward the end with with bledo bichi came in five- win team I think to start but they started beating teams toward the end of that year and again gaining some momentum showing signs of Hope and it's not just hope for the fandom it's hope for the guys in the locker room kind of seeing that what all these coaches are preaching what they've assembled okay this is starting to work this is starting to make sense boy we get another year we get some more players in next year hey we're ready to go that's the best I think and you know what I I wouldn't necessarily judge wins and losses I I would look at the eye test do they look better do they look better than the product that they put out last year are they competitive against these all these good teams and these good quarterbacks that they're facing because last year they couldn't even beat terrible teams you know with third string quarterbacks playing right so the Jets in the last game oh my god oh so if if they start looking better or the Giants right my God uh Tommy Tommy deito they could not be Tommy DeVito yeah I think the best example of that go ahead Karen go ahead no I was just gonna say I think it's just about I mean they're gonna like start really low bad but again it's the progression do they look like they they're getting better does Gerard looks like he has a handle on the team do does he do these coaches look like they know what they're doing on Sidelines you know the whole operation right but as I said that's probably what their goals are this year too right right I said if that is their goals this year but if they if they still look like they're clueless three quarters of the way through the year or toward the end of the year that would be a disaster yeah and and I don't I I can only hope and we can only hope that that sort of happens the team that comes to mind is that Detroit team I think from two years ago that came and we were actually I think a few of us were at that game I think Big E we were at that game Jared G was terrible and then he just you know they they went on that run towards the end of the year they beat Green Bay to keep him out of the playoffs and then they went on that run uh the following year to the NFC Championship so not to say that's happening with this team if it does that's my point you're just Illustrated what I was telling you because again as you said they were awful Detroit awful and then something clicked in and they started to build a little bit they started to get more confidence then they knock off a good team again toward the end of the year they keep a team out of the playoffs and all of a sudden their season ends on a kind of a hopeful note they don't get in the playoffs but then they were a completely different team the year after you know after that kind of buildup process yeah one can only hope with this team and I think they lay the foundation this year and hopefully they're they're off and sailing into some better times here ahead because because the last few years were we're tough and ever since number 12 walked out the door it's it's it's been a revolving door of what's going to happen next um but Karen we want to sort of wrap things up with not talking about the team but talking a little bit about yourself you've been doing this for uh incredibly long time no no not it's wisdom it's wisdom great for a hundred come on I we can only hope we're looking at no just kidding uh but but we we'd love to talk about so when you started it you know it's it's a whole different ball game than it is right now over like how have things changed over the course of time from the coverage like what sort of things have remained the same obviously the introduction of technology and how that has played a role is different but what have you seen as some of the major things that that you've noted over the years Bigg thing biggest thing is the internet okay so let's say say I started I was hired out of diapers and but I've been in the business about 40 years so okay just to kind of preface that but when I started way back um there was no internet there was no there was no social media there was no you know I would file a story from practice or whatever wherever I was and that was it for my day pretty much I mean if something happened you know okay you get information but again I work for a newspaper if it was past deadline well write it for the next day and that's it with with the Advent of social media the job is now pretty much 247 um I mean you have to be alert to things and if things happen to happen at 11 o'clock at night well guess what uh either wake up or you got to get something up online so I mean that's I think that's a huge difference you know for people covering teams um and you know I think teams now are also a little a lot more media weary and uh and again I think that's and it's I think the internet has a lot to do with that as well I mean it's it's a tough climate for athletes dealing with social media dealing with you know writers who rip them and then the whole fandom that they can see ripping them on social media uh I mean by the same token when things are going well you know it it's kind of the flipp and reverse of that I I know coach bich used to tell his players you know stay off so I mean it's just it's like a drain you know for them but now I I think he lost the the battle because everyone has Twitter or X accounts you know and it's hard for athletes to stay away from you know people who are knocking them like you Matthew judon if it's Matthew judon or whoever is handling his account right it's just a whole different Dynamic uh you know that's kind of crept into sports right now players break their own news you know um so it's just it's just a whole different can of worms makes sense and I mean the the access to information and and 247 365 nature of it is is definitely there it feels like every day there's there's something new that comes to the Forefront and before you know it it's like all right on on to the next yeah it's like old news in like two seconds yeah that's that's everything um what what big moments over the course of your career stick out is there any behind the-scenes stories or any any any nuggets of information that would be great for people to know that Karen Gan his witness oh my God we would be here all day and night I mean oh my God I I couldn't have dropped into the Boston Sports scene at a at a better time you know I was there when the Red Sox finally broke the curse I mean I covered I covered them from 03 down to the Yankees that year uh that was amazing I covered the you know Adam vineries them upsetting the Rams when it all started I was there I've been to every Patriots Super Bowl every Patriots playoff game uh I've been in most of the Red Sox the Bruins and the Celtics um but I have to um you know the only because it they it was brought up recently the All-Star game at Fenway Park you know where Pedro struck out the first five guys or whatever it was that moment watch being in the ballpark for that Home Run Derby uh with Maguire and Sosa and and griffy you know that was unbelievable but the thing for me my biggest memory from that um I think I I don't know if we knew that Ted Williams was going to be a part of that ceremony but him coming out in the car but I had interviewed him a week or two prior to that and it might have been like the last recorded interview with I don't think he did many if any after that but I got him on the phone and his voice is just bellowing into but I have that I have that interview you know on a cassette player and it's like wow you know um just you know for me it's all these greats and Superstar athletes that I've met and even even the Lesser lights you know good people are good people um but as I said I I am like one of the luckiest people in the world having been dropped into you know covering Boston Sports and the four decades that I've been able to cover you know between all the Championships all the Amazing Stories both great and not so great I mean the flake gate spy gate Aaron Hernandez I've been there for all of those I've written about every single thing um but it's never boring it's never dull and that's a great thing and that's why it's the best sports city in the world we you know we were everything you just said hits home to you know the the five of us who've pretty much been watching since you started your career and have experienced the the highs and lows of Boston Sports um guys any takeaways from that that that like that was I think it's safe to say that you're living out our Dream every every one of our dreams and wow that just to be in your shoes for a day just can't imagine honestly you have to Pi seen you have to pick the right day you know while I'm sitting out there in in the rain last week uh during training camp getting drenched like get your footwork going you're not going you're not going yippe I get to watch train prce yeah and know that that Fenway 99 um that that All-Star Game you know brought me back to you know sitting in you know and in my bedroom just just head up and just like you said just watching the balls just go flying out and then everyone just like kind of circling around Ted Williams just for me it was just like it was an unreal moment and and that that that was the thing I I wrote about you know that moment and you know it's funny like you I'm sitting there and going because I knew I was going to about it or you know we kind of pre-assign things you know cuz I did the Ted story before they wanted me to stay with Ted you know during the game and it's like and again I didn't know what was going to happen or how it was going to happen but when that happened and it's like you know as a writer the gravity of the moment you know what you're seeing is Iconic and so special and then it's like Karen don't think about it because it's like you want to do it justice and you just hope and pray you do do it justice and so so that add a little bit of pressure um but you know it was it was great when one of my colleagues wrote me a note from the day after and you know basically said you nailed it so that made me feel really good but when you again when you get such moments like that you really you really want to do it justice you know because and I'll tell you why when I the reason I became a sports writer aside from being an athlete and loving Sports I loved reading about sports I I grew up reading the Boston Globe in some great writers Lee monville uh amongst many and I was so captured by how they brought the action to life in their words or they brought what they saw to light or brought you something that maybe you didn't see just from watching on TV and I just loved I you know I would just read their stuff day after day after day and then say to myself God I hope I can do that one day you know or or I hope I can be as good at conveying you know conveying what everyone is seeing you know and and having it in print and Karen that's that's like the best way we can sort of end on things is because we've been we've been fortunate to be reading you for a long period of time but for those who may be new to you uh where can they find you where can you get all of your Karen Garian information both in Fr in audio and video you can get definitely get me on the massive website uh masslive.com uh I do occasionally I'm on Twitter or X at kargan and I do do the ion Foxboro podcast uh I try and have guests in and you can get that on Spotify on Apple I think I think you can I think that's posted just about everywhere so uh you know Google me and you'll find me love it love it well Karen from on behalf of the five of us we really can't thank you enough this has been one of the most amazing experiences to be able to talk with you and go in depth about the current team and and to hear the last you know 10 minutes of of recall some of those moments that you've gotten to experience is is truly awesome and I think we can all say it's about time they bring an All-Star game back to Fenway Park that that's much NE so Karen if you can put a word in with anybody you know please I I will I certainly will I don't know if it'll top that one but uh you know it's always good to create new memories right absolutely Karen last thing from me as well just wanted to say it's an honor to speak with you as you had mentioned you grew up reading uh these great writers and we feel fortunate enough that we've had that experience with you uh throughout our years as well so thank you again for the time we really do appreciate it agreed thanks guys I really appreciate it I liked being the sister for one night sister anytime you're welcome invitation is always open to the first ever sister on the Boston sports brothers podcast Karen Geri and find her at masslive.com I onf foxb podcast Karen thank you so much for joining us we hope to talk to you during the season we'll check fantastic guest talking all things Patriots and some great behind the scenes in terms of her career we're gonna go right into yeah oh oh yeah biggie take it away baby I got an oh yeah for you guys oh yeah oh yeah my my oh yeah for this week is uh Team USA men and women's basketball coming up clutch during the end of the fourth quarter in both games and sealing the gold medal against the Home Country in France on their home court just what can you say the dominance of the men and women's basketball team um we're living in a golden era right now and you know I I do think that while we are living in the golden area era uh we are going to see these other teams catch up but how sweet it was this past week so congrats to both the USA men's and women's team for their success oh yeah oh yeah oh yeah anyway you got a yo Biggie or no Yos oh I got a yo let me tell you about this one Yao for this week jiren Duran come on dude throwing around homophobic slurs that's not a good look for anyone uh especially an athlete be better man come on yeah yeah oh yeah oh you sound Canadian he y oh Penalty Box him in the Penalty Box jiren dur two games Susy in The Penalty Box absolutely games F time I give I've give him a five five minute major for that like that's not a minor penalty be better pretty pretty bad we had a we had a much more serious conversation about it at the beginning of the episode and it it that just can't happen it just can't uh and oh yeah that we have for here or sorry for right now is did anybody see Blake Griffin Payton pitard I did he was the officient right give that give Blake Griffin a ring please oh yeah I'm gonna give an oh yeah to pton Pritchard on the lovely marriage of to his lovely wife Emma McDonald and like you said Blake Griffin what he was the the the officient I mean come on what does this guy do he jumps over Kia cars he can officiate weddings can't he do honestly he's part of the Stay Ready group you know like stay ready he's always staying ready you never know you know come off the bench and officiate a wedding for if you need I give hey Blake if if you want to unretire we we gladly take you back that minimum that minimum we got of the week yeah o is the socks for me I mean it's been it's been ugly it's not been good not been good boys finding out the True Team the true colors of the socks we need going going back to the wedding uh talk wedding there was other weddings in Boston Sports this uh this past week uh David Pau got married oh yeah in Croatia in Croatia I heard uh the spaghetti buffet was incredible um but it was cool it was just cool seeing pictures on his social with all like all the Bruins players you got Brad marshan Cree was there he was a grman him and him and Tory Krug that would like that kind of warned my heart a little bit to see those guys that close a relationship they have to be a groomsman at his wedding so that was really cool very cool I do think that's one thing about Boston Sports is like the players actually become friends and like they're the the teams are closer uh from that perspective in their personal lives than maybe some other places so oh yeah nice job full pasta bar at the pasta wedding de you got some Penny Angel here cinara Alfredo little lady in the [ __ ] action you know you want a little pesan on that I'll tell you when I say when going going I didn't say when yet oh my god well hey one more quick oh yeah I just got as we talked about before I just got to give a shout out again for the fourth or fifth or sixth or seven times to our guys Tatum holiday and D way on yeah yeah so uh you know we'll see what happens this year hopefully Tatum can use it as motivation and uh we can bring in another one uh Jaylen Brown too some motivation for you my friend for not being picked when you should have been picked so we're we're here to support you as well indeed indeed so y o with the Penalty Box here as we move into the the final segments here on the Boston sports brothers podcast Steve Kerr for obvious reasons not playing Tatum just head scratching as Sam just mentioned hopefully it's motivation for the Celtics to go on a on a repeat run this year uh Fenway Sports Group the entire ownership I I thinking about LeBron being an owner of multiple boss sports teams terrible uh the ice shut is currently broken John Henry and if you want any chance of getting it fixed you stay away from purchasing the Boston Celtics and jiren Durant for obvious reasons as well so Penalty Box is is getting a little bit more full and uh you know the who knows who else might end up in there over the next couple weeks can I throw thr can I throw some one potentially on The Penalty Box um and I like don't I think I know the committee but it's like the whole Olympic Committee with the gymnastics thing anybody seen what's going on with that with Jordan Jord yeah potentially have gave that medal back yeah I the whole Olympic Committee might be in the Penalty Box for this because this is all debacle right now stuff them all in stuff them more the merrier baby yeah it's going to be like when you actually see The Penalty Box and there's not like after a major fight it's to everybody so penalty box is full this week full this week I say if Fenway Sports Group buys the Celtics we we need to protest in front of the Garden or something we get arrested like the uh other are we gonna be the the the Celtics 5 like the Brady 4 let's do it I'm there there if it gives us a free invitation to like some event down the road I'm all for it no we're not looking for any handouts we just want no fway Sports Group involvement in anything else than this Red Sox and if you want to sell the Red Sox to Steve Paduka or anybody else that'd be great too the pike boys the pike another week down we look ahead to preseason game number two practices Pats and the Eagles this week as Karen talked about so hopefully we clean something out of that and what's going on uh with the Pats hope to see some more of Drake and the socks just got to win some series to get back in it here anything else on the Pike boys as we head into another week no I'm excited for uh this next preseason game I think like Karen said it's gonna be a litmus test for the for the pat so we'll we'll see I'm hoping God I'm praying I'm hoping that may play a little bit more um but we'll see the only thing I care about this week for the next preseason game please no more more no more Bailey zappy please put please stop that zappy fever is no no more that's Dar and over with for sure yeah I'm also uh I'm also excited to for the Eagles Patriots game um I do have family that grew up in the Philadelphia area not to say that I am an Eagles fan by any means but uh uh I always love the matchup I think it brings out some of the best in the two teams um I hope Drake May gets more than a couple throws off this time I really want to see what that kid has to offer so uh it's a it's an exciting game to look forward to Gabe can we give a little shout out to Uncle e uncle e uncle e is dying to get on the podcast appreciate it one day we'll do your philly minute we promise maybe we promise you you'll get on here don't worry thanks to everybody that's a great way to to wrap things up this week uh we've had some great feedback from friends and family uh each week we're we're getting better here and and we're really excited for some guests that we're going to mix into conversations we're going to do some episodes that are just the five of us as we move forward as well so you know we're getting into a rhythm here we're getting some fantastic folks to join us uh and really looking forward to what's ahead this fall when all these Sports really start to ramp back up on the Boston sports brothers podcast so that's going to take it into another week here looking ahead boys to what's what we're GNA talk about next week and and really shift into full-on Patriots mode and uh that will be the main focus socks as well so it's been great to chat with all of you fine gentlemen this evening great combo with Karen I think we can all say and as always follow us on all the social media where
