FINAL Ohio State Football Depth Chart Projection For The 2024 Season

[Music] college football is back let's go Ohio State football is here for the 2024 season let's go Buckeye Nation I can't wait for Ohio State to kick things off this weekend in Columbus against the akan Zips I'm excited this is going to be a good one I'm hoping to see all the Horseshoe sell out 104,000 plus be there as Ohio state gets ready to gear up for this 2024 season and we're going to talk about today on the Ohio State football report the final depth Shar projections for this Ohio State team there's a lot of players that are solidified to be in their spots that have been there for a while now and that have been back for the last couple years but there's some new faces that we're going to talk about today and we're going to start with the quarterback room we touched on on a few episodes ago the Ohio State depth chart for the quarterbacks it starts with Will Howard the Kansas State man who has big 12 Championship experience he will be starting and then Devin Brown who's been here a few years since high school coming out of Utah a dual threat quarterback he's going to be the number two according to Ryan Day behind him a guy they also got on the transfer portal Julian saan Julian saan is somebody that I believe is a good quarterback I don't know if I totally agree that he should be quarterback three I think him and Devin Brown are kind of neck and neck exactly in terms of their playing style and their ability but I don't know if Saiyan was given a shot in this Ryan Day system as long as Devin Brown has so I think for this to be a debate of who's the backup to will Howard is really critical and I think you guys need to tell me why as well who you believe is the backup that needs to be behind will Howard I think it's a really type battle I know it's qb2 and not qb1 we're talking about but let's say will Howard goes down this is a big time player that needs to come in and play with these Ohio State weapons will be Devon Brown who did not do well in that Missouri game last year in the cono or Julian S who got to back up Jaylen milro and learn from Nick s at Alabama I think it's a tough one but I would have to say it's neck and neck and I don't know if it's qb2 and qb3 I think it's qb2 a and qb2 b so I think my take is that I'm comfortable with the way this QB dep chart shook out but I kind of wish Julian S made a true push to be number two and Ryan day kind of didn't talk about him enough in the press conference in terms of who's going to be backing up will Howard but let's not talk about the quarterbacks anymore let's get into the running back back Quan Judkins trayon Henderson your rb1 and two they lost a lot of depth in this transfer portal in terms of running backs chip trainum left went to Kentucky and then down Hayne went to University of Colorado he's going to be starting this year and so will trainum in the SEC for the wild cats so I think this is a really good running back room in terms of your two starters it's 1 a 1B it's not rb1 rb2 henders HED jins are equal than I think Judkins could even be the starter in a few days because I I think he's that good but right now Henderson I believe is going to be starting when it comes to akan game but a couple days from now that might change just because of the fact that Judkins has more athleticism than Henderson and Judkins has been more durable Henderson's been hurt in his career at Ohio State also SEC freshman offens of the year so I think that's a really big push for Ohio State to have now let's talk about the wide receivers this is where it gets very interesting for Ohio State in terms of their depth AA abuka great player we know what he can we're going to touch on what he needs to do in this 2024 season and repeat his 2022 year Carnell Tate the sophomore out of Chicago and IMG very solid we don't know exactly what he can turn into for the Buckeyes he replaces what Marvin Harrison did this past year and that's big shoes to fill and then there's Jeremiah Smith we've talked about him many times already on this show this guy's a freak and iron Buckeye somebody I really excited to watch I think all Ohio State fans are too behind him it's Brandon inis and I think Brandon inis is a very interesting player he was the number two player number two wide receiver in the recruiting class behind Carell T so they were the one and two in the receiving class in the 2023 rankings Brandon is it's his time to now step up I think he's going to be very critical but he has to go behind this guy Mecca abuka 2023 really wasn't his year he had a mid-season foot injury that's why his stats aren't as good as his sophomore campaign was in 2022 over 1100 yards 10 touchdowns averaging almost 6 yards per catch AA abuka is going to be a really good player for this Ohio State team but we need him to repeat that 2022 season or else Ohio State's really not going to have that single threat like they had with Marvin Harrison Jr last year and talking about not really any threats it's the tight end room no one sticks out as someone that's going to be a star Ohio State really hasn't had a tight end be that pivotal piece that they can rely on if none of their weapons are working they had Cate Stover last year he was pretty solid but Kate Stover wasn't being that guy where opponent like we need to have a double team with a linebacker and safety on him but it's going to be very interesting how they kind of do a tight end by committee this year and as I said earlier no one sticks out this room there's no stars there's no perennial Powerhouse players that college football's kind of used to and I think that's where it gets really interesting for this tight end room because we have will kacar the guy who comes in from Ohio University he knows the state of Ohio well but he play in the Mac that's a lot different than big 10 ball and going up against Oregon Michigan p State I think this tight end room needs to have that leader in G Scott Jr who's been here for four years now he was a converted wide receiver into a tight end and for G Scott Jr he needs to take that not just leadership role but that next jump in terms of being an athlete and a really good tight end the offensive line This is the biggest place of concern that a lot of people have been talking about online especially in the recruiting role with Justin fry the guy who came from UCLA just a few years ago looking at this offensive line you saw in the beginning of the year these are some new names that we're used to Josh Simmons who's the transfer from San Diego State he ended up having a really good second half of the Year Donovan Jackson we know everything about Donovan Jackson dude's been here four years he was all big 10 two years ago an all American two years ago Seth mclin this is very interesting he had the bad snap in the Rose bll for Alabama transferred to Ohio state do we think he can be better I really don't know then your right side this is where it gets really interesting Josh ryer who had an okay PF f grade not great and okay it was in the 70 to 80 range don't remember the exact grade but I don't know if Josh frier can really handle that right side in that Right Guard spot still up for grabs that was a projection of tegro being in that spot Carson hensman could still be there Luke Montgomery could shift on over I really don't know what exactly is going to happen for Justin fry and Ryan day to make that decision but they need to make it soon and they need to have confidence in that right side the line protecting will Howard because last year it was not great for Kyle McCord and we know Kyle McCord wasn't the best quarterback in the country but he could have been a lot better if he had protection so I am really worried about this o line this year this offensive line is not what we're used to seeing when we have a lot of first round picks on this Ohio State team we had Paris Johnson Jr just two years ago we know how good Paris Johnson Juniors Taylor Decker has been an Ohio State lineman there's been so many guys that have come through this Ohio State room and danan Jones even someone who's very underrated who is now turned to a pretty good NFL player so it makes me think how worried should we be about this offensive line and like should this be the time to be worried should this be the group to be worried about my answer is yes and I want you to scale in the comments one to 10 how worried you are one not worried at all they equivalate to the wide receiver room I'm all good 10 sound the alarms this could be bad especially with Michigan's defensive line being so good with Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant that could be problems come November let's look at the PFF stats quickly for Donovan Jackson he had a 69.9 PFF great over overall okay that's not bad pass blocking great around the 73 but what really sticks out to me is he only allowed one sack on that offensive line this past year in his position at left guard no penalties that's huge and I think for Donovan Jackson he needs to be that leader that we saw a few years ago in terms of production and being that guy to solidify an offensive line that needs it really bad especially with some new guys coming in and playing around him so I think Donovan Jackson he's the fourth best interior lineman returning this year in the country in terms of his grades he needs to be that guy once again if not even better now let's turn to defense this is the exciting part of this team which is weird to think because Ohio State a few years ago really didn't have the defense that they had in terms of their offense with all the guys they had look at this defensive line I mean this is a great D line room right here Jack Sawyer Ty Hamilton Ty Williams in jtt and there's a lot of depth as well they were ranked the number one defensive line in college football and with Ty Williams returning his run defense the stops he had 26 of them which was top within the power four or fourth excuse me but still in the top five he was a force to be reckon with and that's within the inside then you have JT and Jack so on the outside who are really good I think the production needs to step up especially for JT we need someone to be that Nick Bosa of this year for Ohio State because we haven't had that in a while but then looking at the Ohio State linebacker room this is a room that doesn't talked about enough and I know why it's the production it really hasn't been there the last few years Cody Simon started two years ago got bench last year came in during the Notre Dame game excuse me Notre Dame game he was good against Notre Dame he was one of the best defensive players but he really didn't have that production you need from a starting linebacker for sunny Styles he kind of plays that safety hybrid the will linebacker look that Jim NS loves Sunny styles for the AG is he's only 19 years old but he's going to his third year technically I think for sunny Styles this year needs to be the big leap and then you see CJ Hicks in the backup right there CJ Hicks was the hyped up best linebacker in the country a few years ago in terms of recruiting where has he been we don't know and I think we need to see something from CJ hick real soon the cornerback depth chart well this is a talented room right here when you look at this this is Bia what Ohio state says every year their Bia best in America in terms of the DBS this is the best in America in terms of the quarterback room Denzel Burke who was a freshman All-American who was just outstanding last year pass breakups was outstanding like I can't say enough about Denzel bur in terms of what he's able to do on the field and lock down your number one wide receiver this is the most talented starter out of any room for Ohio State the cornerback room you have Jordan Hancock the guy who came from Clemson a few years ago who really solidified himself as a starter on the outside and Davis igbos some he brought that sec ferociousness to the Big 10 and he's really stuck with it ever since he got to Ohio State this room led by Tim Walton I'm excited to watch this room lock down some of the receivers this year and talking about Denzel Burke even further his pass his PFF grade overall and his coverage grade were in the top 80 in the country overall in terms of all defensive players but when you break it down specifically for cornerbacks the pbus were off the charts what he was able to do he led the Big 10 this past year in pbus and he was like Rivas Island but in college and and let's speak about the rest of the Buckeyes now the safety room lean Ransom guy who's been here for a while a captain number eight switched from number 12 to8 he had his up and downs while being a buckeye and then there's Caleb DS who comes in Caleb Downs this guy is going to be awesome to watch I mean look at the accolades he brings in to Ohio State over 100 tackles as a freshman as a safety the pbus in interceptions pretty solid but he was fourth overall in the entire sec in terms of what he did for tackles he was a first team all- americ in according to PFF he was SEC All Team all first team all freshman team and he was the SEC freshman year on the defense you bring that into Ohio state with the history they've had at safeties and quarterbacks that equals success he is the best athlete on this team no doubt about it I mean you're bringing in a guy who has experience under sa for a year is there a better Coach out there to have experience from to learn from no and then there's Ryan Day who's not a defensive coach but he's a very good overall leader I think what he's going to learn from Jim nolles however now that's big knowledge's Power and I think he can really learn some things but H knows a ton he doesn't even look like a freshman out there he's going to be a sophomore he's going to be really good for Ohio State and let's round it all out with the Special Teams not a ton of big names here but Jaden Fielding does return as the the kicker for Ohio State the guy who everyone's been talking about as of late on the left is Nick mclary The Freshman from Australia who has a hammer of a leg he supposedly can put the ball 90 yards in the air do you believe that I don't know if I do there are videos that have surfaced of him punting the ball really far I don't know the exact measurements but let's say Ohio state has to punt the ball away which we hope that doesn't happen this year with the way their offense is supposed to look he has to punt the ball
