this is Sean sport in podcast form the aflw season gets underway this weekend it's going to be awesome m driis scho is our freal Docker star she's an absolute Superstar actually really love her and we've been waiting for her to come in she Nathan's already told us about a video that's on her phone that we're all going to see at the same time em good morning first of all hello everyone hi thanks for having me Nate's like I hate talking footy I want to skip straight to this video we're going to talk with footy second you need to talk okay so story time yeah what what's happening okay so my middle brother Nathan who did play for freem mantle on the weekend has just come back from a leg injury he did fall on his leg and got cked however it was kind of an external C which means the bleed was between his skin and his muscle he then had to have an operation to basically remove the blood that was kind of pooling in that area so I've got a video here that I want all you to see come over this side come over this side come over this side all right everyone's okay with bud no one's going to pass out yeah yeah this is a knee this is a knee joint it is unbelievable it is like raspberry jam coming that's unbelievable so that was pulled above his muscle between his skin it was not going the surgeon literally says in there this isn't going anywhere anytime soon you know when you go to Crispy Cream and you get a jam donut and you squeeze the jam out of the donut constantly but way more Jam way more jam and so this is a problem for quite some time for him wasn't it yes it was it was ongoing that so they did um release all of that and then obviously the risk of infection then just goes through the roof so he was in hospital for about 3 weeks had to have a drain put into his leg as well because this just wasn't going by the look of that he need a spoon drain put into his leg that that is that is a lot of jam how does the human body H it's that interesting the human body can do something to turn your your blood into Jam Jam N for you get the toast out we need a crumpet in here that that is amazing I knew that I I didn't know that that was the the exact injury that Nathan was suffering from I was waiting for him to come back and then you know it was a bit interrupted through the year to be able to get some traction going Jesus and his leg kind of withered away as well yeah just there was it basically shrunk kind of like when you see people obviously do their knee and things like that they obviously can't use their quad properly so that just so now he's got one of his legs and one of this Nathan's legs one filled with Gem and one not no he's he's back better than ever now but his scar is very gnarly it's halfway up his leg um just from those three surgeries he had to have in in a short period of time so em you were saying I actually asked you about Nathan cuz he just played the last couple of games and come off soon to now hear that and see that in action it's a huge comeback you must have been so proud to see your brother out there yeah definitely I don't think we expected him to play football at all this year and for him to get back especially in two very crucial games for Freo yeah from that um is super exciting and I guess really positive for him moving forward but just for us as a family we had obviously my youngest brother Aiden go through a concussion period as well so I think when you saw Nath play footy he just played with so much confidence and just like he really wanted to be there I think probably because Aiden couldn't do that as well now so there's a bit of a bit of that so can in his career hasn't it he's had to yeah he yeah yeah that's tough oh that's sad how's that how's the family with that yeah it was really tough at the time um my parents typical country people said it might knock some sense into him I said uh probably inappropriate um but um no Aiden's actually got no symptoms he's he's doing abely fine obviously just the risk of him getting hit again is the reason he won't play football but again just gives Nathan and I a bit more gratitude whenever we go out there to actually play well you know what I'm really glad that Nathan's back playing cuz football looks like it's his Jam Lally n's been waiting to say that line here we go B he rang the bellone with Aiden I'm we're going to get to the AFL W season a second but with Aiden right for everybody out there Aiden is a a flash he can run like would he consider going into Athletics funny you say that Sean he's actually training five times a week for in atics Victoria at the moment he's staying over in Melbourne and he's training with an Athletics coach and um what event is he they have told him that he's 400 will be the best but he's doing four two and ones and um yeah they said they looked at his PSA times from Wesley College last year and said he'll be able to qualify and potentially even trade for the store gift or something like that what about something like bz no sprinters do that you know put him in no I don't know honestly I think he's just yeah keep the world is his oyster at the moment so I feel like he's just going to keep his options open it's amazing to hear uh your family story all three of us playing AFL football and all this this is crazy right so your mom and dad were they country stars I I met them but they're country stars on the gas but are they C you stars in the in anyone else's opinion well you have to check if Dad has a heartbeat most of the time he's that Rel um but Mom did play high level netball so she played State netball and volleyball as well um yeah my dad was a really good cricketer um and also played a bit of footy but he reckons he popped too many fingers so that's what um made him retire but no I think they were they were very good at what they did and Mom had more of the determination so she took it to the next level I think if Dad wanted to he probably could have but he's very nonchalant all right the season gets underway against ID at Windy Hill you get to play at I always want to go I've only been there I've never had run around on Windy Hill so that would be uh great in itself but how are your Poise we had Simon garlic on N posed the question that no other AFL team had suggested that freem will be in the mix where do you think things are at for the boys or for for us yeah we're in a really good position like I I was saying a that before we've been training for the last seven months or so I think the girls are just so fired up to actually play games like we kind of get deprived of games all year so the fact that we get 11 games this season as well rather than 10 is just another opportunity to get better and I think a second year under Lisa web as well is really helping us I think coming in with one year under your belt is is really hard to implement a new game plan and I think this year we've um we've certainly done very well at that it's just going to be interesting to see how we go up against a different opposition and someone like ESS and they pulled our pants down last year so I'm just hoping to get out there and actually give them a red hot crack you're going to smack a few over right pull your pants down and red hot crack in the same that's great no I I do say the horns are out um yeah I get called the Raging Bull sometimes and I'm certainly raging it's going to be great you know um when I was down the club a few months ago whenever it was and there was a a new Irish girl that joined the team now that's a bit of fun the the Irish are infiltrating um men and women sport over here so the men are trying to get hold of those professional galic footballers and and the women's team as well so it's always good to have a good good source of talent you got a few we got a few and the skills Translate an Irish person even working with you or in your group it always feels like you're about to go to the pub they're so lovely now we love the girls and um yeah their snap on like on goal is absolutely unreal because of the way they play gay we actually had two of the gay boys come down and train with our men's team as well it was very funny Sean you love this went one of them went up to one of the other Irish girls and said so how does this work did you just get paid cash after the game the innocent in that comment was just like you don't get paid a set to play g a $50 vout to the rebel like surely we could up a couple Rebel your Fitness um M how's how's your preparation gone are you do you feel fitter and stronger than ever yeah absolutely I mean that's the generic answer but definitely we've been working so hard I think the main thing they're focusing on from a strength and conditioning perspective is highspeed running I think that's where the game's going as you see in the men's game but the same with the women's so uh we still obviously work on that aob Bic capacity but at the moment it's been kind of that high Sprint effort and just repeat efforts that sounds awful I'd prefer that Nathan really oh ask me to run a lap of the overl gassed ask me to do like 10 20 me Sprint I'm fine yeah I prefer but also that's that's um my position as well as a Defender you kind of just going up and back up and back and short sharp as opposed to running all day you would have been good a British bulldog also you could run through people could you so what time are you out are you flying today yeah flying today we got a big day at the club um much like the boys we go do some walkthroughs this morning then have our strength session and then we're straight on a plane to MB very pumped you be watching Nate that you might not know anything about the football but you can point out number three form well plenty of things happening down at Freo Doland at the moment after the weekend's performance by the men's team we let's put that aside for a second but the women are action this weekend we are going to catch up with Emma o Driscoll a little bit later on but the big kahun at the football club the CEO Simon garlic has taken some time out of his morning to join us now okay Gallow Johnny thanks for having me on mate yeah absolutely you're heading to the airport to get over to uh watch the women play this weekend we are mate yeah um incredibly excited we get Lisa web second year as coach um some amazing new recruits hasn't been an offseason without his challenges obviously losing our Skipper to a knee injury unfortunately and um former MVP turbo uh going through her pregnancy which is incredibly exciting um but some new recruits that have come in um clearly an understanding of the game plan that leea is implementing and some great work that the whole Department's done has us looking forward to round one at Windy Hill this Saturday mate Simon were you surprised when you heard that no other captain in the aflw thought that Freeman could win the flag because I would have thought that they that somebody would have thought they'd be up there not really now we as you know we um for a lot of victorians we don't tend to exist or we sort of exist occasionally when they when we play them um that's for every single company and every sing person working here in wa that's right you can see I've got the healthy chip West you you'd be proud to know um so kind of kind of where that is a bit of a badge of honor that um you know we've just come off the Men season where were incredibly disappointed I think anyone rated us to make a finals birth which ultimately unfortunately turned out to be the case but we certainly had that those expectations so not a surprise but just nice little motivated I think yeah s garlic I want you to be honest with us right now and tell us the truth are you ready here's your question who is better to travel with who is better to travel with the the the women's team or the men's team who do you prefer to travel with uh definitely the women's team and is that because of the smell or is it just the general Vibe what is it as I'm saying that I'm just wonder I'm just I'm pretty I'm pretty confident none of the men's team are going to be awake at this point so I'm hoping this this doesn't get back back but yes there is a body situation far worse with the men's as you can imagine hey Simon I saw you on the news just the other day you did hold a press conference we answering all the question about uh the men's Fallout on Sunday all to play for looked like the pressure got to him but the last three weeks four weeks in particular is it hard to I mean this is me you know I was at my mom and dad's last night me brothers and Dad and everyone's coming at me right so I'm defending and giving answers and that's that's you know they should to do this but you know Shawn Darcy was injured the whole year realistically we had him in here all time he was injured Alex missing the last couple of months but he caught all of our games to be honest to go out but then the yeah I was looking at statistically uh you know the main um the main things that we were very good at they really fell off the cliff in the last three weeks so how did you view the situation oh I would just as disappointed as everyone in the m Family household I think um so we we're clearly gotted we we we didn't reach our expectations internally I mentioned before we don't really care about what people on the outside think but you know when you're sitting third on the ladder at 12 and a half wins at Round 20 um you know it gives you a massive opportunity and it and it probably demonstrates that clearly we've got the capability to play football at the best level he they Sydney and Sydney had some brilliant wins against the dogs and and top four teams throughout the year um but the reality is we we couldn't cut it at the end shy and we didn't we weren't good enough for long enough now you're right I saw Hayes write an article that as you know most of his are really insightful talked about if you take if you take Harris Andrews Oscar mcer and Joe Dan out of brisban it makes a difference now that's that's true and that's the reality but when if I sit there and talk about that it sounds like excuse making and that's not what we're about we just couldn't get it done at the end we l them by 25 points you know early in that that's the game that you're really rud isn't it that result you can pull well you can pull it all apart now I mean running into an open goal against Colin would you win that um even against gws who clearly are a top four side we went up there without those three players and again we're running into an open goal to go in front with three and a half minutes to go so we were we we were we were there but not enough and we were a young Squad there's clearly a lot of talent we think the foundations of a Premiership standard list are there but we're learning some harsh lessons and and no finals topes games in those last three weeks and it's going to burn I know it's burning the group now and it's going to burn over the preseason and we've just got to make sure we do the work to get better again yeah now the big call at the moment is the fact that everyone's talking about freem manels cache of draft picks which is exciting right and the club and the team at the moment is built on going to the draft but there is a point where you decide to um throw it in the mix and get out get some you know veteran players or some exp there's a few on the market there's so many and then how do you do it so the Chad Warner at the Sydney Swans is someone that every everyone wants to get a hold of I mean even Nathan knows that I know who is uh we also had that Coy piet's now throwing his name up that's the town for leam Baker and of course Shay Bolton so there's four guys that West Australian could be West Australian band at some stage so who is in your cart online when you add to cart before you go go and press purchase who we got uh well it's a great question because as you say there there seems to be a plethora of choice at the moment but the reality is shorty y there's so many factors you got to take into account because there's the cost you know from a pure a direct perspective in terms of what a player will cost you from it a salary cap perspective there's the cost to bring a player in and that can depend upon whether they contracted or not and um that can have ramifications for you down the track because if you give up a significant amount from a draft perspective that might seem all well and good at the time when you bring some some you know established talent in but how does that impact you down the track when you you you might be missing some young Talent from a drafting point of view so there's a lot to think about it's a boring answer I know guys but that work that work that work's been going on for six months particular in relation to this upcoming trade period and it all becomes a bit of a frenzy towards the end but David walls and his team have done a phenomenal job as Seany said in relation to building the list through the draft primarily um obviously we've we've complemented that with Luke Jackson coming in Jordan Clark Jeremy sharp of recent times so we're clearly a club that's shaping is a strong destination for wa players coming back we've just got to make sure they're the right type of player um they fit the age profile which as Sean said can be a bit older for us now because we're such a young yeah that's right a bit of experience isn't going to go astray yeah and then and then there's then there's the character element as well too and how will they fit into a dynamic as a team and as a club so a lot to think about but but we're really well placed and we can we we I said the other day that we're going to be really aggressive but do it in a responsible way that helps us get better hey actually while we while you're here I should go and get Amy because there's a there's a situation that involves Sean yourself and our producer okay while you do that uh are you sitting up the front are you s sitting up the front end of the plane no mate I always try to do the right thing being a 5 foot 10 very short man you try and give it up to we've got on who and a of others so we'll make sure that the um the tall players and stuff get the right thing Jo all right so um Simon you might know Shan um you know pretty well to the point where you know that Shawn loves making bet with people and sometimes Shan can't be trusted with his word Monday we'll be fine we'll be fine and I said Sean there is no chance like it's too short notice it's the last blah blah blah and then then he said all right we'll make a I I bet we can I bet I can so we made a bet and what did we bet Sean oh a cart of Mato ging beer so about $890 okay so we shook on it Nat saw the BET take place 100% I put the request in heard back from Tanya yesterday said to sha on Monday whatever we you know we could I gave you the opportunity to be able to your opportunity Sean you what I'm hearing is Sean gave gave Amy the opportunity to do her job is that right 100% okay right yep she couldn't deliver couldn't deliver so then what happened Simon I threw you a text message yesterday no but you didn't deliver on Monday it was about getting Monday mate I gave you I gave Amy the ample opportunity to possibly was you could get him said I can get Simon on Monday and I said I don't didn't even get him on Tuesday this is said let's make a bet Monday came and went we didn't have him on just to be clear Simon um Sean o Amy at I that's where they're going Simon Okay okay I see where this is going um but it just shows this the power of sha mcmanis in in the town of Perth doesn't it Amy Amy through the proper channels tried to do her best couldn't quite deliver and then sh sends out a quick text and here we are we are three days after days after the fact you two what are you twoo guys doing first of all I thought Simon was going to be a levelheaded man here but he's been purple purple you didn't deliver on the day or the day after or the day after that once again so you had plenty of opportunity to deliver what the right people and let them do their job and I get we hide Amy she's the best in the bus and I want to take the shine away from bye G looking
