look I'll admit it I may have been a little skeptical about Riley Leonard when Notre Dame added him in the transfer portal but after all the buildup this offseason which culminated in Leonard leading the Irish down the field in a game-winning drive on the road against Texas A&M I am a firm believer that he is the perfect fit for the Irish this season all that and more in today's mailbag edition of surprising considering how excited the fan base is after the season opening win against Texas A&M but I really appreciate every single one of you who sent in your questions if I don't get to yours today don't worry I'm going to be doing a mailbag every single Friday throughout the rest of the season so keep sending yours in and I promise I will get to them eventually but let's get right into it because we have a bunch to get to first one this is from Stan ekd or maybe it's stain KD either way is Riley Leonard already better than Sam Hartman okay like I don't think it's fair to say that after just one game especially one in which Riley Leonard statline wasn't particularly great he finished 18 of 30 158 passing yards 63 rushing yards and zero touchdowns and I also think Notre Dame fans are very quick to forget just how good Sam Hartman was at the beginning of last season like if notam gave the ball to Audrey gme a few more times on that last drive against Ohio State or if the defense was able to get a stop there on the last Drive Sam Hartman would have been the Heisman front runner at the end of September going into October he also carried the Irish 98 yards downfield with basically zero receivers to beat a Mike Elco defense too uh plus he ran for a fourth and 16 on that drive like he carried that offense in that game and yeah I obviously the Sam Hartman experience didn't quite live up to the hype that we all had about him before the season but he had some really good moments last year and I don't really know why people choose to pretend that they never happened but here is what I will say about Riley Leonard compared to Sam Hartman Sam Hartman would not have won that game against Texas A&M and Riley Leonard is a much better fit for this Irish team this version of this offense than Hartman would be Notre Dame needs a dual threat quarterback to make this year's offense work we know about the offensive line we know how young they are in experienced they are and they are going to struggle at times throughout this season they are absolutely going to allow some pressures just look at the Texas A&M game according to Pro Football Focus Ry Leonard was pressured 10 times against the agies didn't get sacked once now sure he had to scramble out of the pocket and there was that play when he ran out of bounds for a loss of two which technically isn't counted as a sack but he was only hit twice in this game in the pocket now he obviously got hit when he was running the ball but he was able to hold up because of his elusiveness I did not truly comprehended just how good he is at avoiding the sacks um that he he is and he showed that against sex A&M I I still think that Ian book was maybe the most elusive quarterback I've ever seen in the pocket outside of like Caleb Williams but most elusive noted aim quarterback like he had that absolutely dirty spin move where he would feel the rush coming from his backside roll around and then scramble to his left but Ian book was not nearly as much of a factor in the quarterback the designed quarterback run game as Riley Leonard is those 63 yards rushing were absolutely crucial for the Irish offense particularly late in the game like when they started running five wide quarterback power it was in automatic seven yards even if it didn't always look pretty what rileyy Leonard brought in that game and what he will continue to bring to the Irish offense as a runner going forward is such a valuable asset and he is going to have to do that a lot this season particularly in the big games if you watch a replay of Jeremiah Love's touchdown run there at the end of that game there are two linebackers in the box and they both take a step to the left when Riley Leonard carries out that fake and then once they realize he doesn't have the ball they go back in the box and by that point like that one step of hesitation allowed Jeremiah love to run past those guys on his way for a touchdown if Sam Hartman is the quarterback that's not going to happen because no one would have bit on his fak like there were multiple times last year when Sam Hartman could have kept the ball on a read option and he just didn't which is odd because he was a good runner at Wake Forest and we saw it on that fourth and 16 play and that touchdown run he had against Clemson like he had some Wheels if he ever decided to use them and we don't have to relive the fourth and one play uh against Ohio State last year but he could run he just chose not to that is not going to be the case for RI Leonard but I do think that going up against Northern Illinois notame is just going to ask him to not run as much because they do need to save his legs for the rest of the season but Sam Hartman and riy Leonard they're both veteran guys who are brought in to help lift this offense and basically make up for the fact that they had an inexperienced quarterback room and they had not recruited the position that well in recent years and Riley Leonard's Poise on that drive that final DY for the Notre Dame offense is exactly what Notre Dame needed and that's why they went out and got him in the transfer portal he wasn't passing well early on in the game that much is true but he absolutely did on that last drive that pass of jayen greous was great the uh jump ball to Bo Collins was placed perfectly so we know he has it in him he needs to develop more and I think one thing that I think all notan fans are rooting for with the ri Leonard experience compared to Sam Hartman's is that Leonard continues to develop and get better as the season goes along whereas with Sam Hartman he peaked very early and then by the end of the year it wasn't that great and I think that's a big reason why so many people kind of turn their heads to the Sam Hartman experience Because by the end I mean even in that Stanford game Sam Hartman's last game wearing an notame uniform he threw a pick very early on in that game and obviously didn't play well against Clemson but hopefully the Ry Leonard experience is the complete opposite and that his game against the aies on Saturday will end up being his worst game of the season because Notre Dame is going to need him to be playing well if they want to knock off USC at the end of the year I know that's a far game away at the end of November but it's going to be very important for the Irish offense to be humming in that game because USC's offense looks looked really good which isn't a shock as they have Lincoln Riley as their play caller but they're going to have to have things ready to go in that game and I think that they will so as long as Ry Leonard stays healthy and he develops as a passer he is the type of quarterback that can win you games in the college football playoff and for the people who didn't want them and they wanted Notre Dame to just ride out there with angelli let me ask you this who would you have been more comfortable with out there on that last Drive Riley Leonard or Steve angelly I think we all know the answer to that question and Riley Leonard proved why on the field against tchm so it wasn't always pretty with rileyy Leonard but he's a huge reason why they won the game and he will continue to win them games going forward and I do think that in the end the rileyy Leonard experience is going to be much better than Sam Hartman because Leonard is a much better fit on this year's team okay speaking of Riley Leonard at Michael manini wants to know wo what do we need to see from Riley Leonard this weekend I want 50 plus rushing yards 250 plus passing yards in a 70% completion percentage personally I'm hoping he has less than 50 rushing yards because I don't want Notre Dame to have to run him much sure if he scrambles whatever if there's an open Lane he can get the first down fine and if they run a read option in the defensive end sells out to stop the running back and you can get an easy eight yards sure I'll take that but I really am hoping to see less quarterback power and less hits on Ryan Leonard because you go back and you rewatch that tape against Texas ANM and he took some shots there was obviously the targeting call very early on in the game which was maybe the most egregious maybe not the most egregious that's a bit of a stretch but textbook targeting from that Texas A&M safety very early on in the game I can't believe how quickly just bounced up from the ground like nothing had ever happened there and he took more shots as the game went on so they do need to preserve him because they are going to need need him later on and you don't want to have to resort to quarterback power over and over again in week two against Northern Illinois that's how you end up getting your starting quarterback hurt so I want less rushing yards but that's a good thing and I'd be very happy with 250 passing yards I'm a little bit less concerned with a 70% completion percentage because I'd rather see him push the ball down field a little bit and throw some passes that aren't necessarily high percentage the most important thing I want to see from him is convert on some third and Longs where he has to fit the ball in a tight window because the strength of this Northern Illinois defense is their secondary they were six in the country in pass yards allowed last year and they brought all their starters back Notre still should have more Talent than them on the outside but these guys are not going to make it very easy on Riley Leonard and i' lik him I'd like to see him make some plays that aren't easy like show that you have some NFL ability make sure you can show some Scouts that hey like it doesn't always have to be perfect for him to make an NFL caliber throw so I would really like to see that in this game I don't think it's going to be perfect this is still a developing offense specifically on the defensive line and then the relationship between the quarterbacks and the wide receivers like Riley Leonard looked like a guy who missed all of string practice and hadn't played live football in 11 months in that season opener and I don't think that all of those problems are just going to go away after one game even though Notre Dame is going up against the M team it's going to take some time but I think that we need to see real evidence that he is going in the right direction as as a passer because those were some of my concerns about him when he um came over from duke and I think that there was nothing really in the first half of that game that made me feel a whole lot better but then what he did in the second half really made me feel optimistic about what he can do and how much he can develop as the season goes on because he clearly developed within that game and considering Notre schedule eases up and they aren't going to go up against defense as good as sex A&M every single week I think he's going to get better as the year goes on and I think that by the end of the year we're going to be talking about Riley Leonard's pass the game much differently than we are today okay we got a ton more questions to get to and coming up after this it is time for me to address the haters who were taken aback by the mere suggestion that Notre Dame could potentially have a lackluster performance against Northern Illinois today's episode because it is a long one I love the way that he sets this up here's a question if A&M had won this game would they be talking about a possible let down next week against State no if this was Alabama who squeaked out a tough win against the same A&M team in Kyle Field and was playing Georgia Southern next week would anyone be talking a possible let down not on your life so the semi- recent past experiences with different coaches and players should not apply I'm tired of the explanation that Notre Dame is going to struggle against significantly inferior opponents because they had a tough win last week and we have a knack for having let down games afterwards enough of that I grew up a fan with era Divine Holtz this kind of anticipatory excuse making was not a thing back then let's get back to that Wily Wily Willy I mean how dare I suggest that Notre Dame might not be as emotionally ready to go to play a team in the Mac after playing an extremely hardfought game on the road in 100 degree Heat against a good SEC SEC team in the season opener my bad but look I'm not picking un willly here uh there were a lot of people in my comments that were not happy at the suggestion that Notre Dame could potentially have a letdown performance against Northern Illinois because teams in the past specifically Notre aame teams have had let down performances after a big time game like this here's a thing that a lot of you guys don't understand like I'm not making anticipatory excuses these are just predictions that I'm making I've got to give you some content right I'm gonna make a prediction and I could absolutely be wrong about my prediction but in order to make an informed prediction I rely on stats and research and history tells us that this is a spot where Notre Dame might not play their best and it's not just Notre Dame other college teams around the country have let Downs all the time not to mention Willie the fact that the two teams that you mentioned mcne State and Georgia Southern aren't nearly as good as Northern Illinois who brings back 18 starters and they were a favorite to make it to the MAC Championship in the preseason yes this team is still not anywhere close to the level of talented that Notre Dame is but still they're a veteran group and they could potentially pose problems against zre Dame like I guarantee you back in 2022 if anyone had said yeah I think Marshall is going to upset Notre Dame you would have called them insane and guess what happened they lost this happens these are 18 to 23 year old kids and the coaching staff is going to do everything they can to get the message across that they cannot let up in this game but it's human nature to kind of take the foot off the gas a little bit it's hard to bring that level of energy and enthusiasm until into every single game it's borderline impossible and how many college teams every single year go out and dominate every single one of their opponents even the ones that they're far better than it doesn't always happen even Georgia struggled a couple games last year I mean they were on the ropes against uh South Carolina they struggled against Auburn who was terrible they had some bad games even Alabama in the peak of the Sabin days they had some bad losses like it was very rare for Alabama to go undefeated under Nick Sabin so it just happens college football has some crazy outcomes and I'm not even saying that Notre is going to lose I've been very clear that I think Notre is going to run away with this game in the second half and they're going to end up winning by double digits but I wouldn't be shocked if there's not coming out clicking particularly on offense at the start of the game I'm not worried at all about this defense like the defense is going to shut down Northern Illinois that is I feel very good about but I wouldn't be surprised if the offense takes a few drives to really get going and for those of you that think Lou holtz's teams were immune to let down games let's do a little history lesson 1987 Lou Holtz was the coach not during beat number 11 Alabama 37-6 on November 14th what happened the next week oh they lost to unranked Penn State 21 to2 1988 not letdowns I'll give you that 1989 beat number two m Mig 24 to9 very ear on in the season next week they barely beat unranked Michigan State the very next week 1990 they lost to unranked Stanford at home 36- 31 coming off ranked wins against Michigan and Michigan State that Stanford team finished five and six by the way 1993 see I didn't even want to do this but you're making me do this not you Willie but everyone else who's been giving me hell the past few days knocked off number one Florida state in the game of the century what what happened the following week I think you know the answer and this is not even to disparage Holtz he was an amazing football coach arguably the greatest coach in the history of Notre Dame but the point is that even teams who are coached by one of the best with a bunch of talent can be success susceptible to let Downs because it's human nature hopefully that's not the case with Notre Dame I really hope it's not I hope they come out and dominate and I would be ecstatic to come on the Pod next week and be like I was completely wrong this team is laser focused they're ready to go I'm an IDI for even suggesting that Northern Illinois could contend with this team I would love that okay but I'm making a prediction and I don't think that's going to happen so that is my response to Willie and a lot of other people who are not so happy okay moving on speaking of trap games at Jack burke4 which Trap game on this schedule is your biggest concern to be honest with you I don't really think that there's a true Trap game in the sense of like Notre Dame has a big win and then the next week they're you know in danger of losing because I think they might have a slow start but they're not going to lose to Northern Illinois but Miami is uh Miami of Ohio is a game that I brought up during uh preseason Awards with Luke Smith like I made the point that they could be tricky just because they have a really good defense they have legit dudes on their team so yes it's a Max schal but they had their best season ever last year Chuck Martin is going to have those guys ready to go but I don't think Miami of Ohio is going to beat them I could just see that being a close game at some point in like the second half of no doesn't come out ready to play I I mean if Louisville is a trap game then we've got serious issues here that should not be a trap game that should be a Revenge game Notre Dame should come out on fire in that game to make up for what happened last year but Louisville has just given Notre Dame some trouble since they started playing each other once snan became like a partial member of the ACC they played Louisville four times in the past 10 years and they are two- two with two pretty ugly wins so obviously they got smacked last year in 2023 and then you go back to that game in 2020 the co year notame won that game I don't remember the final score I think it was like 14 to9 it was hideous it was an ugly game one of the sleepiest games ever but they did get to win in that and that Louisville team was not good um and then 2019 they opened the season against Louisville Louisville was terrible the year before and I thought they were going to smoke him nope Louisville came out they scored two touchdowns very early on and then Notre Dame ended up running away with the game in the second half but I remember the big takeaway after that game is that Notre Dame is screwed against Georgia they ended up figuring it out and only losing to Georgia by a touchdown but that was not a great performance either 2014 Reggie bonnafon who killed me as a high school football player literally ended my high school career by throwing for 200 and running for 200 uh sure I'm over it I think I brought up that up like five times before on a different podcast like people are probably so sick of hearing about that but anyway Louisville beat Notre Dame in 2014 so even though I think Notre is better than them I'm worried about that game I'll be there but I'm worried about it but again it shouldn't be a trap game maybe Florida state is a trap game because we're all just completely writing them off so maybe I don't to be I'm just kind of reaching here because I think they're going to be done by that point in the season a lot of these guys are there because of nil and different things like that so if they're completely out of the mix by November I don't think you're going to see a super inspired Florida State team heading into South B when the weather's probably cold to play a very physical Notre aim team George Tech we can't call them a trap game at this point they're not going to surprise anyone and USC is in trap game that's a really tough game against a rivalry uh or it's a tough rivalry um game on the road at the end of the season so there really aren't many trap games that I think notame is going to be in danger of losing now there are certainly games where notame could lose where they're the better team but not in the true sense of the word Trap game all right when we come back which young players are ready to shine in their opportunity against Northern Illinois that's next on lock on Sean O'Brien 7 would Holden stays have started last week if he were still with Notre name I think most people would say yes initially but honestly no I don't think so he didn't even start for Tennessee in their season opener that would be miles kelman a transfer from Alabama stays did finish the game with two catches for 13 yards but Tennessee absolutely smoked Chattanooga and Holden stayes was really not a part of the offense and to be honest with you a big reason why Holden stays left is because Cooper Flanigan and Eli raran were taking some of his reps away at the end of last season so considering the growth that those two guys have made in their careers and particularly over the last year at Notre Dame I think Holden stayes would have been a good piece to have for depth purposes like we know he has talent he put up that huge game against NC State so it's not like he's just void of ability but I I just honestly think that Eli ran and Cooper Flanigan are better I would like to see a little bit more from the tight ends in this game Cooper Flanigan did have a nice catch on that corner route he had a great block on Jeremiah Love's touchdown run but we didn't see much from Eli Ren Notre him could absolutely have used their tight ends especially on third Downs I don't think we're going to see a ton of Mitchell Evans in this game as he still recovers from his tour in ACL but no man I I really don't think Holden stays would have started on this team okay next up at CS Janis who will be the first notan player to record their first career touchdown he says he's going with Christian Gray that is a bold call CS jennis I would say the safe bet is anias Williams because he plays running back and if Notre Dame is um up big in the second half anas Williams could have a chance to get the ball and run in for a touchdown so that's the safe pick but I love that CS Jenis is basically predicting Christian Gray is going to get a pick six in this game hey I would love that I said before this season that Christian Gray is going to end up leading the team in interceptions now Marty not feeling that great about it because it looks like Xavier watts is just going to pick up up right where he left off already has one interception this season after having seven last season so we're going to have to wait and see great did have a great shot at getting an interception uh maybe even a pick six against Texas A&M on that fourth and two but he knocked it down will take it because it ended the game here's a wild card though for you KK Smith on a deep shot because we know that Jordan fisan is going to be out for this game and probably next week maybe even the next two weeks as well KK Smith is the next man in at wide receiver and even though Notre is going to rotate guys a lot I wouldn't be surprised if KK Smith goes out there maybe runs a slot fade the Northern Illinois defense isn't going to be keying on him because they don't know who he is he's never really played meaningful snaps for Notre name before then he just like goes out there and scores a touchdown it is not lost on me that Mike Den Brock mentioned KK Smith he was the second person he mentioned as Notre Dame's best deep threat behind Chris Mitchell so if you wanted to go first touchdown Notre Dame uniform I mean you could say Bo Collins Chris Mitchell but I think it's going to be KK Smith I was going to say Cooper Flanigan but he actually scored a touchdown for last year also keep an eye out for Jane Harrison heard a great stat on Irish Illustrated Insider that out of 50 kickoffs for Northern Illinois last season only eight were touchbacks which means that Notre Dame is probably going to have some shots here maybe not many because I don't think the defense is going to be scoring points but if they give up a couple field goals and then they get the ball at the start of the game at half watch out for Jaye Harrison that's all I'm going to say I could absolutely see him returning one to the house in this game k at Nathan Coleman 45 which backup player are you most excited to see on the field assuming that Notre Dame blows out Northern Illinois I mean jayen Osberry but he's not really a backup he only played 17 snaps against Tex A&M but that's probably going to be uh that's going to be changing here real soon because he was all over the field like he is just so good and notam just has five really good linebackers so they're going to have to rotate him in and Jack Kaiser is obviously going to take the bulk of those snaps but I was so impressed with what Jane osy did like I said he was not out there often but when he was out there he was all over the ball his great instincts great great athleticism just can move sideline to sideline like he's an awesome pie for this notame defense and I think that as the season goes on they're probably going to have to tighten up that rotation a little bit probably not in this game though because they're playing Northern Illinois like you could constantly rotate these guys in and out but I'm excited to see him if we're talking about a true backup though Bryce Young on defense he's an absolute monster he's on the kickoff team and he's 6'7 240 plus pounds or whatever he is he's a freak of nature and the fact that he came in in the goal line package for Notre Dame against Texas A&M shows the trust that this coaching staff has in Bryce young at such a young age so he's going to be an absolutely phenomenal player for the Irish he's already on the depth chart which is impressive and if he continues his Ascent he could go down as like an all-time great because it wasn't that long ago where we're talking about Bryce young as like a oh a legacy offer you know yeah he's a big kid top 300 Prospect or just outside the top 300 Prospect all that then he ended up being a five star after a senior season and now he's already getting some reps there in Notre Dame's biggest game of the season so I think we're GNA see a little bit more from Bryce young in this game and I cannot wait all right last one this one comes from at sandre w you could probably figure out who that is besides the Texas A&M game what is your favorite game that you have attended and why okay so I think if we're talking alltime favorite Notre Dame games it's actually very easy and I've talked about this before so sorry if you've heard this before but it's USC 2017 it was my senior year at Notre Dame it was an absolutely perfect weather day Notre Dame absolutely handled USC like the most dominant Notre Dame win over USC in my entire lifetime and those were two pretty good teams like that was the Sam darnold year so it wasn't like they were beating up on USC when they were at their worst that was a good team in a big game in Notre Dame dominated them from start to finish I remember the tailgate in Legacy Village before the game was all time because the game was played in middle of October and it was like 78 degrees in South Bend you don't get that very often that time of year and as a matter of fact I think all the good weather that we had for that year my senior season was spared in that game because every single game after that was horrendous weather like Wake Forest NC State Navy it was cold and rainy for all of those games but you know what I'll take it cuz that USC game was so fun after the game after the game was a blast at the time everything still felt attainable for that Notre him team they only had one loss against Georgia so it felt like they were back especially coming off to that abysmal 2016 season like that was just an alltime night in that stadium so best game ever that's got to be it for me plus I was a student so it's just a different level of fun for going games away from Notre Stadium which I think is actually what this question intended to ask if we can count Wisconsin in 2021 as a road game that's certainly up there that fourth quarter was so much fun in Soldier Field and then that we kept the party going at rales in Chicago and then you got the Chris Tyrie touchdown the Jack haiser pick six to put it away Drew Pine coming in I think he threw a touchdown pass that kind of feels like a fever dream now looking back that was a ton of fun but also I got to say Dublin last year I mean that was just an unbelievable sporting experience that transcends just Notre Dame games for me being able to go to Ireland for the first time with my family see so many of my friends who I graduated with and then the stadium itself was awesome Notre Dame destroyed Navy it wasn't even your typical Navy game where it's like kind of just brutal to get through because they're running the triple option no that was an awesome experience but yeah that those are definitely up there I got to mention um UCLA that was what when did Brady find some Mar oh yeah 2006 pretty boring game but when jeffar broke open that touchdown um that was an alltime moment for me as a kid too plus I was 10 and I was so obsessed with Notre Dame football already and that was like you know when they were good for the first time in my childhood so that's an all-timer too but um a lot of great games a lot of fun I've been fortunate enough to go to a bunch of them but I have to say man that Texas A&M game was up there at the very top and I'm hoping that when I go to the Louisville game it's pretty anticlimactic they win and when I go to USC at the end of the year just anticlimactic and they win and then maybe at the end of the year we're talking about a playoff semi-final game that notame wins and maybe that that takes the crown for my favorite game that I've ever attended but that is a wrap for episode number 300 of lock down Iris thanks again for making this your first listen of the day and before we go I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has tuned in since I took over as the host of this podcast 300 episodes is a lot and I put a lot of is cool to see some of you really enjoy it and continue to watch and listen that really motivates me I take it very seriously and I have a lot of fun doing this and the last thing I'm going to say is we're just getting started like this is not a Victory lap whatsoever even though I'm grateful for the growth and support of the show 300 episodes in I I think we're really just scratching the surface here and there are a lot more exciting things to come so 300 down 300 plus more to go and I can't wait it's a whole lot of fun if you are still listening after my little dieet tribe that I just had
