the Pack 12 a western institution and the conference of Champions more than 100 years and today we get to round another it's an intriguing match up as these teams battle for this conference Trophy and continue the proud Legacy of this league this is a matchup we've all been waiting for two teams ranked in the top five battling for a precious conference title but also pointing to something even bigger the college football playoff as we'll see the number five team in the country the California Golden Bears taking on the second ranked team the Oregon Ducks 3A sports college football I'm Chris Fowler here in the booth with Kirk herb Street and I think we've talked long enough Kirk let's get this game [Applause] going the kickoff team is out there and here we go a conference Championship on the line right now bringing it out it's low and he's tackled just short of the 25 first down play call coming up how aggressive will it be quarterback's got it on the [Applause] option and now it's fumbled what a decision the ball bounces out of bounds so the offense will hold on to possession pretty easy call for the head coach he will accept that penalty of course this line getting set up it's a first down play from the shotgun it's a handoff they'll stop him behind the line for a loss of one that was that excellent linebacker with a clear path just running downhill quickly you know I think one of the great things about watching this guy play all year is his vision he just has great instincts that time the defensive line ate up all the linemen freed up the linebacker to get into the back field and the result is a tackle for a loss for the backer in complete he was hit as he threw that time and now third down coming up we see if the offense can move the chains off that incompletion now in third and very long looking to throw fires it to the Wi out and it's incomplete the defensive pressure affected his throw that time the Ducks will line up to find it away well there aren't very many things that can get to a quarterback of this magnitude but I think it's safe to say that good pressure by the defense can get to any quarterback can he make it he's a dangerous returner found a good Lane there they finally get him but excellent field position at the start of this drive the offense excellent field position to start this drive one man at the back field and he'll get the football they'll stop him behind the line for a loss of one Chris this is what i' love to see from a defense is the linebackers are scraping doing their job but you need help from the secondary and when you have aggressive tacklers on the back end you got a great defense this time the secondary makes the difference offense getting set it's second down they flip it to him on the Jet Sweep and he's tackled for a loss after the catch the defense all over that one that's one of those plays that works better against certain defensive looks but not every defense is the same they were all over that one let's see if they continue to attack to the outside in the perimeter to set something up down field now it's third down and long they would hate to waste this great field position scanning the field it's Mendoza quick throw to the left side it's picked off he tried to fire the ball into a tight window not much on the return tackled at the 17 and a big interception for this defense boy just a drive killer right there Chris and he didn't seem to throw that ball with much confidence put it up for grabs defense comes down and offense is back out on field last time was a quick three and out can they get a drive going this time and here's the handoff it's a quick spin move oh block that'll pick up first down yardage very near the 40 there's nothing more that helps an offense than committing to that running game and an explosive run like this on the ground keeps the confidence of your offensive lineup same with your back it helps everything else that you're doing as an offens in your Rhythm now you can come back with some counters try to take some shots off of play action and keep hammering away with that run game defense is coming after him and the sophomore Mak it an impact play well you got to do a better job with your fake as the quarterback the defense did not bite at all on the play action allowing them to continue to after the quarterback and come up with that sack we see if the offense can overcome that sack second and long drops back from the shotgun looking for an open man makes the catch it's Johnson Breaking Free at Midfield that is a huge play finally brought down at the 46 yd line Bo a nice completion here by this Oregon offense to be able to show you it's not just about the quarterback's ability to run associate that with that Oregon quarterback right that dual threat guy guy that can run it do not forget about their ability to throw the football out in Eugene think about Darren Thomas the career that he had started for a few years took his team all the way to the National Championship airing this one out toward the sideline he's got it right through the end zone and he scores touchdown Ducks they they try to add to the lead now with the Pat and the pat makes it seven nothing open Score give me time I'm a die now the kickoff team is out on the field and the returner decides the singal fair Catch C's offense takes the field now this offense trying to bounce back the last possession and then in a [Applause] p looking for his big tight end physical defending that one Falls incomplete BRS up second down boy this quarterback has a lot of confidence in his arm he tried to thread the needle into double coverage lucky that one intercepted out of the shotgun he hands it off that's a solid gain moves the ball to the 29 so it's third and long from the 29 defense fig to bring pressure here dropping back we going to throw for the first down short pass finds the tight end they tackle him at the 43 but that's enough for a first down what a clutch play Here by this offense to convert on third down I know it's still early in this game but the fact that they dug themselves a hole to convert there and keep this drive alive they got a new set of downs and a chance to dig into this lead the Golden Bears will line up on First and 10 off an RPO the quarterback looks to his right and he's tackled after the catch how about this defense that is called team Pursuit swarming to this wide receiver on the screen not allowing him to get his momentum up field offense comes up to the line they might have a chance for a couple more plays before the quarter expires to throw it's Mendoza On The Run he'll let it go oh my it's caught down field that's a solid gain to move the six as the first quarter clock winds [Applause] down right there back at it to start the quarter offense getting set to run a first down play in the red area [Applause] it's coming to the line on second down this is important they want to avoid a third and long looking for a gap it's poot they'll stop him behind the line for a loss of one my gosh this offensive Line's got to do a better job of blocking the defense was zero in on the ball carrier and absolutely nowhere to go for the offense [Music] so here we go third down in the Red Zone the kind of play that decides football games oh a reverse he stopped short of the marker so it's fourth down now and the go coming on the field now the kick is good he knocked it right down the middle and that oh my gosh I mean it's almost too easy nice kick They Come Away with three points on the drive and now the kickoff team will boot it away and it's fielded can the returner make something happen here the coverage team able to bring him down and that powerful Oregon offense retakes the field punch it into the end zone the last time let's see if this defense has made some adjustments to stop him this time he'll hand it off picks up two so it's second and eight receivers now getting some new assignments before the snap looking to throw it's Gabriel lets it Go quickly makes the catch down field and a big game before he goes out of bounds the offense keeps churning gets a fresh set of downs the key on a third down between a quarterback and a wide receiver is the timer that quarterback knows that he's got to get the ball out quickly and on time to give his receiver a chance to not just make the catch and stay in bounds but to be able to give him a chance to maybe get up field and make a play theid got to take off explosive play Big gain across mid field to the 42 yeah you know this defense has got to be frustrated after giving a multiple conversions now on first downs there's another one but for the offense they're just playing very efficiently right now first down play call how aggressive will it be on the run it's James finds room with the 30 get makes it across the goal line touchdown again CHR all week I wondered if this back might get loose and come up with a big play like this the defense had their back turned couldn't really see where he was by the time they realized it he just had too much speed and he's able to take it to the end zone now the try here for the extra point the kick is up and good they tack on a point to their lead [Music] that's H to getting set to kick the ball off now and the fair catch signal for and taken so California's offense back out on the field now they've had to settle for field goals that won't work anymore they got to find the end zone this [Music] [Applause] time first play of the drive they come out throwing that's reeled in it's Anderson they make the tackle but that pass creates a solid gain Chris it's so easy to get excited about the receivers on the outside and their ability to make big plays but the slot receivers are just as exciting the especially with their finesse quickness and ability to make guys miss in the middle of that field Dy [Applause] offense getting set up here's second [Applause] down looking to pass it's Mendoza fires it to the Wi out he's got his man in the open field that's a big gain across Midfield all the way to the opponent's 35 what a pitch and catch by the quarterback and receiver for a big gain for this offense the offense finally producing here sets up a first and 10 s s and he drops back in the [Applause] gun pulls it in it's Anderson breaks into the clear it's a Sprint and he's finally forced out of bounds inside the 10 big play to set up a first and goal what a huge play by this offense a good throw nice accurate throw but I think it's the run after the catch that really impresses me and early in this game you got to think they're going to continue to go back to him until this defense shows that they can slow him down catch Made In The End Zone touchdown Golden Bears love to watch this quarterback go out and execute in this kind of situation he's doing a great job of ignoring the scoreboard and feeling a sense of pressure to have to play with more urgency right now he's executing we're only in the second quarter PL of time to get back in this game now they get set to kick it away this one will be fair caught and the Oregon offense comes back out on the field we have a shootout developing here each offense scoring touchdown in their last possession SS with the throw and the runner scoots out of bounds after gaining some decent yardage I understand the concept of bringing the Blitz and you hope that it gets home but if you don't you leave your corner in manto man situation against this wide receiver that is a tough task for this corner and he's going to lose that battle more often than not to the air it's Gabriel looks over the middle and that's complete he stop it at the 49 but that'll be a first down man I'd love that they continue to go back to this Talent wide receiver that's backto back plays with big gains and it's not surprising like I said Scouting Report all week long we heard about this guy's ability to make plays against this defense and the quarterback and the receiver right now have a nice rhythm going that's caught it's James that's an explosive game they've got him but they gained all the way to 28 the timeout is called important stage late here in the second quarter this offense is clicking and clearly everything seems to be working coordinator is calling good plays the quarterback and the rest of his receivers and running backs are executing and frankly this defense is showing almost no resistance they make the stop to get the ball carrier down was an excellent effort by this defense just staying in their run fits holding their own to line of scrimmage and then making a tackle just couldn't get enough of a push to get any yards at all offense getting set second down play here there's the snap they'll set up to throw finds that big tight end for a short pass defense spends their second timeout to try to regroup boy that's pretty good coverage here by this defense not much of a window to throw this ball into but the quarterback's accuracy and the size of the tight end picks up a nice [Music] game so the offense getting set this is not where you want to be against this defense third and long dropping back looking to throw for the first down looking to scramble and now tra behind the line it'll be a short loss and now the defense will call a timeout here there's something they didn't like about that look and they'll make an adjust before this important play coach electing to go for a field goal attempt he knocks this one right through was watching this guy in pregame he has got a strong leg I'm surprised here he's able to put three points up here for the offense and that one will bounce out of the back of the end zone the offense will start at the 25 C's offense back out on the field now they want to cut into this lead before halftime they have to work quickly now on First and 10 they'll look to throw it and he's looking to make a big Play Down field the pass is dropped incomplete would have had a huge gain took his eye off the ball a second and 10 after the previous play back to throw it's Mendoza receiver makes the grab that's a big game before he goes out of bounds it'll move the sticks more than enough for a first down that's a nice pick up there they buy some space in the zone and pick up the first down yeah really nice call here Chris to be able to pick up this first down on this drag route the quarterback does a nice job of being patient waiting for that window to open up in that zone and he put it right on the money for the receiver to have a chance to not just catch it but eventually get the here comes a deep shot and it's incomplete just 10 seconds remaining now so the offense looking to be efficient here not much time remaining before the end of the half looking to pass here on second down and he's going to launch it deep again oh grabs it near the sideline it's a huge gain and a huge gain before he scores out of bounds big yardage to set up a fresh set of downs so on first down the field goal unit will come out there trying to get three points before the half and the field goal is good oh Chris it's a nice kick here to polish off that drive with at least three points up on the board so here's the kickoff now offense settling for three tacking on a little bit of momentum before the half time break and here's the fair catch by The Return Man looks like one more play here before halftime they'll run it out of the shotgun and he'll be brought down and that will wrap up the first half of play and that will do it for the first half here Kevin Connor now has our halftime update the Ducks will kick it deep to begin the second half kick bounces out of the back to the end zone for a Touchback C's offense takes the field now [Applause] back to pass it's Mendoza pressure is coming that's incomplete even on a first down pass attempt he felt heavy pressure man you got to love this if your defensive coordinator it's all about affecting the quarterback and getting pressure on him this time they got to him and force that incompletion incomplete second down coming up hand off here from the shotgun Breaking Free at the 35 heads out of bounds after a solid gain more than enough to pick up a first down outstanding blocking on the left side of that offensive line that's really what opened up this play they did their job and you can see the results you first and get a big gain on the ground if I were them I'd keep going to that side and see how much more success they can have the offense really clicking against this embattled defense they're going to run it back gets the carry Chris on the spread era over the years has always grown offensively but what I've been always impressed with defenses that really build their defense to play in space still have an ability to be sound at the line of scrimage and defend a running game exactly what we saw right there quarterback looking a pass here on second down finds a man open on the right side down field and a big game before he goes out of bounds the offense keeps churning gets a fresh set of downs great quarterbacks have answers no matter what the defense is at this time the quarterback and the receiver knew that they were going to be able to connect on that corner route before the ball was snapped the throw was so quick the defense didn't have much time to adjust here comes a first down pass attempt grab behind the line it's hot what down after picking up five yards so second and five the defense is so caught up and this guy running the football in this drive they forgot to defend him coming out of the back field nice positive play here keep it on the ground there's the handoff that's a big hit at the end but he earned a fresh set of downs look I realize on any play call when he's properly executed it can go to the house for a touchdown but the runs that can really make a game plan work are the ones where you get just what you need and he barely got the first down but he got it he's moving out of the pocket now nice grab it's quarter steps out of bounds after a nice gain finally some show of life from this offense Chris how about this nobody open initially he rolls out to be able to get out of the pocket away from the pressure and eventually finds the big tight end for those positive yards in that first down the golden bears looking to punch it in here it's first and goaly Qui pass here comes a Jet Sweep they've got him in the back field Nowhere to Run they'll lose a yard on the play this is a great job of being prepared by this defense almost anticipating this play they're in position to bring him down for a loss makes the catch can he get in the defense stops him just short of the end zone spotted at the one and here the tight end shows off his hands for a nice game love to see the big man get his touches see what they can do here third down and goal from the one [Applause] try to make it with a quarterback sneak touchdown cow he'll take the lead in the second half will try to add the lead down with the p Pat puts him up three kickoff team on the field getting set [Applause] now he'll return it from inside the five be tackled at the 17 strong job by the coverage team and the powerful Ducks offense retakes the field out of the shotgun he'll hand it off goes backwards losing three yard there Chris I think we all kind of get caught up in third down what what's an offense doing on third down I think what's also important is how well you defend first down if you can hold your opponents to a short gain or a tackle for a loss sacked it's a l back to the six this defense dominated the first half to helped didn't take the lead now as we see the beginning this second half same old same old they're just dominating the line of scrimmage and doing what they need to do drops back looking to throw for it on third down and he'll rifle this one deep to the right side this one is broken up Falls incomplete now the defense better be aggressive here themselves clearly we're seeing an approach by this offense that they're going to attack down field probably saw something in the first half that they could take advantage of they come out early and try to hit it for bigger he'll field it close to Midfield he's brought down but a good effort to make something of that return my God come do like this first down here for this offense off the play fake looking to throw he's running out of time here it's incomplete he was hit as he threw good pass rush there on first down well it's pretty simple the defensive line does a great job of getting after the quarterback and forcing him into that incompletion hand off to the right side and he's brought down short of the line to gain in what should be the last play of this third quarter first play of the quarter is a crucial one offense trying to convert this third down dropping back it's Rogers tight end has got it and he picks up the first down before they get him to the ground they bring him down but the better quarterback shows off that trademark arm strength when the defense gets these guys to third down they got a chance to get them off the field and instead they give up the first down so the clock will continue to move and the defense is really at the mercy of this offense at this point four set of bounds after a nice gain the offense is knocking on the door with a first and goal nothing better than an offense on first down to be able to pick up big positive yards like that you can either keep giving it to the back or it can set up play action and get the defense to come up to the line of scrimmage and you can throw it over top of it R down at the three after the completion the offense really threatening now the run to the left trying to find pder they'll stop him behind the line for a loss of one what a great play by the defense here getting close to the goal line not only they come up with a big stop but they send them backwards in the process emergency here got to cut into this lead it's third down and [Applause] goal they'll run it from the gun he's sworn by the defense how about that they run the football here on third down almost pick up the first down what it does though is gives them a much better chance if they decide to go for this and picking up that first down so fourth down now from the they'll go for it and the defense rise up for a big stop caught near the goine he did not get it a crucial play by the defense what a fourth down stop Chris I like the call here going for it on fourth down but the receiver has got to do a better job of knowing exactly where that first down marker is and run that route a yard or two beyond the sticks to be able to give yourself a chance to pick up the first down instead defense comes up with a stop and they get the ball back second down after that run on the previous play they'll try the right here finding space at the 20 it's a big game before he goes out of bounds it'll move the sticks more than enough for a first down the big fellows Kirk flowing to the right there the defense just has no answer it's a huge gain yeah and what a patience there by the running back just allowing those blocks to be set up there off to the right and then once he saw the in the defense accelerates through that hole to show you what kind of speed he has for a big gain and a first down grab near the STI it's James for set of bounds after a big game this offense set up with a first down the defense is spread all over the field creating some oneon-one matchups and a quarterback makes them pay for it come to the line to set a fresh set of downs [Applause] first and 10 here looking to throw the ball quick completion with the tight end heads out of bounds after a solid gain more than enough to pick up a first down well this is what coaches love to see quarterback with the ability to lead the defense properly and then just get it to the open man sometimes it sounds simple but it's tough to execute this time we have good recognition by the quarterback and he gets it down to the tight end you can see what he can do after the catch like about quickness that play is absolutely blown up time Chris I don't know if that's a misassignment by the offensive lineman or just really good instincts there by the defender but that play is blown up right at a snap fakes the hand off looking to throw makes the grab it's Johnson that football is out a potentially gamechanging play but who's got it the defense has picked up the football going the other way [Applause] not the news the coach was hoping to hear he took a chance calling a timeout to get the replay we'll see if that proves to be crucial so California's offense back out on the field now very important possession here defense did a great job preserving that three-point lead now it's the offense's turn to build that cushion to throw it's Mendoza and it's incomplete even in a first down throw he was under some heavy pressure second down after the [Applause] incompletion defense trying to Jam these receivers at the line to throw it here on second down it's a quick grab they bring him down but that's a solid gain on the play they bring him down but the sopt quarterback shows what a cannon he has quarterback sees that this defense is dropping way back in zone coverage so he does the right thing gets it underneath to that drag route and picks up a first [Applause] down and looking to throw now on first down crab behind the line it's OT and now it's the defense that calls timeout here trying to get organized and preserve as much clock as possible this is not how you draw it up as an offensive coordinator you got a first down play and you go backwards now you're behind the sticks and that play just never seemed to have much of a chance at all after the first down loss it's second and long the 22 back to throw again that one Falls incomplete looking for a flag get it brings up third down this is the one thing I love about this running back is his ability to get involved in the pass game runs a great route just then come down with a catch they're backed up here trying to make something happen on Third and long they'll use that running game trying to bleed the clock here he's not going to get the first down it's fourth down now and now a timeout taken by the defense trying to preserve as much clock as possible for their offense leading here in the fourth quarter will keep the offense on the field trying to stretch the lead and keep [Applause] possession crucial play here they go to the air he's got it that is enough for a first down they've got him but they convert on fourth down and the drive keeps going well the defense is in the right coverage here looked like they had exactly what they wanted to be able to come up with a stop here on fourth down but there's the timing between a quarterback and receiver they knew exactly where they needed to go great timing and a first down and the running back takes the hand off the sopher with a strong tackle there defense coordinator this week all week telling us about Gap Integrity not giving this running back any creases at all really sound defense on that [Applause] play what a tremendous run these guys have had and now they can call themselves Conference champions that's a tremendous achievement but we have to wait and see what the committee decides to do and if they'll get an invite to the college football playoff and that is going to wrap it up we enjoyed this one here from KB street I'm Chris fer and this has been another presentation of EA Sports college football
