out over there 49ers are expected to play their starters in this game Kyle Shanahan saying that earlier this week and all of the healthy starters are expected to be in uniform for the ners and Kyle Shanahan said depending on how these drives and these possessions go it could be a drive if the offense marches right down the field he might pull them it could be for a quarter if they don't execute or he wants to see more it could be two quarters one and a half quarters a full half either way Niners expected to approach this game as a final dress rehearsal before they take on a really feisty New York Jets team week one on Monday night Night Football to the quarterback position Brock pretty struggled against a very good Saints defense he was out of whack he was forcing the issue throwing across field made bad decisions he was very frustrated clearly and we saw that with his body language and his actions with some of the players that he was playing with at the skill positions that he never practices with that he never plays in games with that he won't share the field with barring disaster and that certainly factored in to Brock pretty struggling against New Orleans against their number one unit he had three- fifths of his offensive line no skilled players played and you could certainly tell but you want to see Brock pretty bounce back in this game if he leads a couple of scoring drives it just eases a little bit of your concerns going into 2024 although I must say I'm not too concerned with Pro uh with big coock Brock Ricky peera he will not play which is a bummer and the ners getting some really bad news on the Ricky Pierce off front started training camp on the not football injury list with the hamstring injury and then shortly thereafter he injures his shoulder and he is not going to play in his rookie year after being the 31st overall pick a preseason snap not ideal a preseason game barely practiced at all and Mike silver of the San Francisco Chronicle said on KBR the ners were aware of the shoulder issue when he was in college and they were hoping that it wouldn't rear its ug ugly head and be an issue but there are long-term concerns about this shoulder and while this draft class for the Niners has looked really good Dominic pun Malik Mustafa Jacob calling Tatum Bethune jerett Kingston Renardo green those returns are really intriguing so far we've seen some great stuff on tape if you don't get contributions from your first round pick it's yet another highlevel whff in the draft for this regime let's talk defense here according to Pro Football Focus the ners have had the worst defense among all 32 teams in the preseason I get it it's the preseason but you have a new defensive coordinator Nick senson Niners haven't been able to get off the field on third Downs they've been a bad tackling team and I was thinking about this when I was coming to work Nick Sorenson might have to game plan in a Super Bowl in February against Andy Reid I know we're a long ways from that kle Shanahan tried to get the big fish he reached out the bill bich offered him the DC job but our eyes are going to be on Nick senson and if he struggles early people are going to be calling for his head asking for Brandon Staley to step in as DC the Niners defensive grade so far in the preseason overall grade 53.9 worst in the NFL their tackle grade 39 worst in the NFL their coverage grade 48 .1 second worst in the NFL and their run defense 50.8 fourth worst shout out to Kev Krueger on X the son of Larry Krueger for those numbers and they are not pleasant numbers to look at of course on the field for San Francisco still no Trent Williams he continues to hold out so he has not been at training camp no Brandon iuk playing tonight but he did travel with the team to Allegiance stadium in Las Vegas does it mean something nothing he continues to act as though he's a member of this team I know some people are going to say he's under contract still he could hold out CD Lamb's holding out Brandon auk is not holding out he's holding in to the offensive line how about Dominic Poney rookie third round pick out of Kansas he is going to be this team starting Right Guard I've been saying that for weeks Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch they confirm that news on the radio on separate appearances over the last couple of days he brings a streak of nastiness athleticism juice polish and overall talent to a Niners offensive line that really needs it I'm interested to see tonight will San Francisco continue to give him snaps and experience to get him ready for a really good Jets defensive front elsewhere along the offensive line a couple of players who we will be watching here tonight tonight udfa Center Drake nent out of Michigan and six round pick left guard jerck Kingston out of USC part of the reason why Dominic puny is so athletic agile and comfortable on the Move understanding the system and a good scheme fit he played a lot of left tackle at Kansas he did not give up a sack last year Jered Kingston played left tackle at USC he did not give up a sack last year the Niners have moved these players to the interior and they've reaped the dividends and the benefits of that they've performed well and Drake Nan who I was very high on as the udfa I think has a chance to make this team at at some point unseat Jake brindle as the Niner starting center for puny let's talk overall offensive lineman here in addition to nja and Kingston puny 30 pass blocking snaps against the Saints one pressure given up first two preseason games 44 pass blocking reps one pressure and then Jer King 61 pass blocking reps in the preseason one pressure given up in two games Drake nen against the Saints no pressures on 29 snaps the only Center not to allow a pressure on 60 snaps this preseason he has allowed one pressure n's offensive line needs to be better and getting an influx of Youth Talent could help him accomplish that take a look at a Jeopardy because up to this point he's been a little bit of a disappointment as a former first round pick this is a player with a ton of athletic upside who can play defensive tackle defensive end just hasn't panned out for the Raiders keep your eyes out for him tonight to see if he can play well to make that Raiders team or if he could be a trade candidate for The ners Who if you pair him up with Chris kerak best defensive line coach in the NFL I think that you can maximize the player and the ners have a need at DT and at Edge Byron young is a cut candidate for the Raiders his roster spot getting a little warm as well he was a third round pick in 2023 this Raiders team has not drafted well over the last couple of years the Raiders offensive weaknesses quarterback play has not been good regardless of which quarterback has been in there Gardner muu or Aiden oconnell the offensive line run blocking has also not been good and then the Red Zone play calling has been abysmal the Raiders this postgame show and instant reaction there's so much to talk about with what transpired as far as player performances players improving their stock roster battles that and a whole lot more there's also some injury news that we want to get to and this is a little bit concerning moving forward forward for San Francisco I know that there's a little bit of a lull until week one against the New York Jets on Monday Night Football but I've talked about this on the show how the ners are thin at a couple of different positions Ed rusher defensive tackle two of those positions so it was not ideal that on the second Drive defensively of the game for San Francisco and a lot of starters got some decent runway in this ball game we saw Leonard Floyd and yur gr Matos both go down and both Leonard Floyd MOS I think he's do potentially for a breakout year this is a player who can fulfill that ardan key Charles amenu role great athlete really long he could play inside outside hopefully he's okay he kind of got twisted up a little bit on that second drive so we'll monitor those injuries and hopefully it's nothing serious because San Francisco very light at Ed rusher and if there are injuries there and those players Miss some time you have to wonder if San Francisco could make an external move before we continue to move forward during our instant reaction postgame show make sure you available at the end of the night Brock pretty goes nine of 12 96 yards no touchdowns and a pick let's talk about that interception so the interception I don't think was a great read from Brock py I think it was a predetermined decision he kind of locked in on Debo who didn't run the best route it went off Debo's hands the ball was a little bit High deflected intercepted returned Brock pie actually made the tackle at the end of that return not ideal that you see that I wouldn't throw that ball if I was Brock pie it was a bad route from Debo as I mentioned it was also a really good play by the DB to get his hand in there to punch that football free why did that pick happen though there was a play before that where the ners would have been faced with a third and one obvious running situation after a really good play by Isaac Reno who we'll talk about here but bra Willis was called for a penalty that made it a third and six knocked the Niners into a situation and be which it became a passing situation and then py gets intercepted so kind of a Snowball Effect there for San Francisco there were some really good things from Brock py he made some incredible plays first play from scrimmage he threw nearly a 30 yard ball downfield to Debo Samuel excellent throw gave him a chance put it where he was able to make a play Debo got two feet down terrific throw and then later Brock prie as he was getting drilled through a straight up dime to George KD it was a little bit high but if you go back and watch it py had to throw that ball high it was the classic pry over the middle area of the field throwing with such timing accuracy anticipation where KD goes up and gets it and it's right over the outstretched hands of the DB so some good some bad from Brock pie I also like the play where things broke down nothing developed downfield and pretty scampered improvisational play picking up a first down with his legs I frankly want to see more of that from him this year because I think he's a really underrated outside of structure quarterback an underrated athlete another concern that I have this Snider's defense going into this preseason finale I know it's the preseason right they were the worst rated def defense among 32 teams in the NFL and now you have this new defensive coordinator Nick senson who's very unproven and the ners tackling has been a straight up joke throughout the preseason they can't tackle anybody it leads to Extended plays extended drives it can't happen in the regular season now the ners didn't play the likes of charvarius Ward and Fred Warner and Nick Bosa that obviously is going to help out this defense but the tackling simply needs to be better and the Niners were playing against the Raiders backups sticking with this offensive movement here or going back at least to the offense first drive first play The Deep ball from pry to Debo it was awesome KD had a first down there was a pitch play to Jordan Mason Jordan Mason is a really good running back in this league Jordan Mason is one of the more underrated players on this ners team I feel as though if he were given more carry somewhere else he could be a very productive running back it just seems like anytime he runs the ball it's a five or six yard pickup he has good Balance power Vision patience he keeps his feet and his legs churning at all times eight carries for 42 yards including a touch down here tonight he has a lot of juice and I want to see the Niners manage the workload for Christian mcaffrey a little bit more so that they can get Jordan Mason more involved because he is clearly the second best running back on this team but how about the play of Isaac gendo tonight Isaac gendo as a runner runs with Power Balance speed he's decisive he had 11 carries for 32 yards look not a good yards per carry right but how about the 93 yard kickoff return that he had which he nearly took back to the crib there you saw at 220 how he Glides running a 4340 yard dash where he started far side of the field cut it all the way back and then nearly took it back for a touchdown there is such special ability that Isaac gendo possesses he has to figure out the hamstring issues but if he can he could be a part of this running back rotation and he could be the week one kickoff returner because you don't have a lot of players who look like that who run like that and in back-to-back weeks you've seen Jacob coing who last week popped this week scored a touchdown on a wonderfully thrown Ball by Josh dobs who found a keyhole Keyhole he's making some plays he could be your team's punt returner contributing as a rookie and then Isaac greno can contribute maybe in the running back rotation but most likely as a player who can impact this team as a kickoff returner now I do want to mention Nick SEL he's filled in for Aaron banks at left guard we've talked a lot of good so far in this postgame show that experiment it's not working out Nick Cel is getting bullied at left guard for San Francisco if he has to start week one against the Jets ahead of Aaron Banks not good not good at all and then lastly offensively cam latu has improved his stock he might be able to make this team it looked as though he was a third round pick who was definitely going to get cut but he had a couple of nice catches special teams plays he had some good blocks in this game I believe he had a seal block on that Isaac Reno returned for a touchdown he's a player who it's hard to justify letting go of a third round pick did he earn himself a roster spot tonight maybe because he also looked natural catching the football he's really improved from last year you have to at least give him that we'll talk defense special teams and more coming video defensively we saw Leonard Floyd pop before he got hurt it looked to almost be a sack but Nathan Peterman did pick up one yard it was good to see him make an immediate impact he has pass rush out year reonardo green put some more good plays on tape had some good coverage he did give up a touchdown and on that play he was whistled for a hold but you continue to see him stacking up some good reps the 49ers speaking of cornerback are so deep at corner like for instance Rock Yim has had a really good preseason he's a veteran he's been in this league for a little while he could play yet he might not have a spot on this team because the Niners are so deep at corner I think you have to find a way to have him on the 53 Samuel wac stock down for him he gave up a touchdown on Tyreek McAllister in which he just looked really really sloppy Tatum Bethune continues to be around the football and I think there might be a spot for him on the 53 he also made a play on special teams he's just very active very instinctual always seems to be around the ball as a seventh round pick if you can make plays defensively and contribute on special teams there's a spot for you I also want to mention that Dominic puny played well once again offensively and then special teams you have the Isaac gendo return you have Jacob coing giving you some juice as a Return Man the Niner special teams unit they continue to be trash during the preseason they gave up an 81 yard touchdown return for a touchdown to Tyreek mallister who had himself a night now Isaac Reno did return with a 93 yard return and answered that but tackling getting off the field on third down special teams lapses injuries those are some concerns that I have as we look ahead to week one for San Francisco here so that does it
