Will ENGLAND's new manager Lee Carsley get the best out of Cole Palmer and Anthony Gordon?

was the one time it wasn't full adult football but it was the under 21 euros and England beat Spain 1 nil with Cosley as a manager and the two guys up front were Palmer and Anthony [Music] [Music] Gordon welcome everyone to another edition of the is podcast I'm your host sahill here with Rahi and here with Bick live from London UK welcoming Bick back to the show Bick how have you been Bick has changed his name to bickram recently apparently according to those watching on YouTube yeah no it's it's always in b i you know uh different season different me I guess po Euros poost Euros so we of course will be covering today few different topics for those enjoying the podcast we'll be bringing you podcast twice a week and on for this particular podcast since we have our lovely friend from the UK we'll always have we'll have a focus a little bit on European football which we know raah he loves very much I do I do I had a question though for for bickram would that be would you be one of the first name on the back of the Jersey kind of guys would you go for b as I'm very traditional very traditional last name very traditional surname your numbers got to be aligned to your position black boots everything got you got you okay I see how it it's a good segue actually it's not a segue at all but it's a segue into our first topic of course so the US was not the only team national team in the world who B who lost their manager and it was of course England was another one and right now England has appointed an interim manager Lee carsley who magically played for Ireland we'll get into that and all that because England has a match coming up with Ireland but also just wanting to kind of talk a little bit about some of the players that perform well over the weekend in the Premier League and how is Lee carsley gonna get it all ready and going and jelling together for the Nations League which starts next week boys so let's let's start there didn't they do this with Southgate too interim into full-time manager yeah exactly uh Southgate was appointed in very controversial circumstances with Sam allise um taking a bit of a bung apparently allegedly um so they just thought okay for continuity sake let's let's promote one of these Junior guys up up the rank see what he does and I think you know uh the rest is history South Kate had a really good run with the team um but that time also had to come to an end so I think I think it's the right decision um and the good thing is Cosley knows a lot of these guys quite well uh two the guys scor the weekend yeah yeah so I mean like he's he's worked with these players um I like the fact that I think they've done the right thing because um there's two ways of thinking about it right one is okay let's let's get a bigname manager firstly who's available secondly there's always um there's always a push for them to be English I guess Cosley played for Ireland but you know Let's ignore that for a second yeah um there's there's always push for them to be English or have been in the game for a long time there's not really that many managers available and this made this made a lot of sense and again if he doesn't perform you can always bring someone in afterwards but at least you've given him a run you've given him a shot and this is someone who's been successful with some of these guys yeah raah as as a proud Englishman since since you are actually though know to be fair raahi has spent a good amount of time in England you know live in London so and if there's one thing I do know British people as with their athletes and footballers are some of the most mentally fragile people you'll ever meet and so with that means is well they don't they is seething B our resent English is seething over there and expressing and boasting about their talent it's this weird sort of Fine Line they tow about not really wanting to offend other people and therefore not really being too proud but at the same time having this inherent Pride it's a bit strange right what the way it manifests itself in these major tournaments is that the players I think don't know really what to do and they start off very nervous uh consumed by the pressure of the occasion and then as they kind of grow into a tournament as they hear all the hate then eventually maybe they get fueled by it and they've done better in recent years in managing that pressure but I think this is the right move be because it's also a pressure that takes the takes some of that pressure off the players I feel like because now you're appointing someone who no one really is knows it's continuity it's someone they like it's someone they're used to it's not a bigname manager you know my issue with bringing a bigname manager would be now would be like okay if you bring bring in a uran club now with England has to win a tournament right they have to win a tournament because you brought in a manager with expectations with their reputation this feels like let's keep it on the radar let's keep it quiet let's not turn up the volume when the volume's already been pretty loud and now I think it allows the players to ease into it they've already found some comfort I don't think you need to break something sorry that that wasn't broken and and so I think this is a good move it's the smart move it's the quiet move but it takes a lot of the pressure off the players and so for me I I think it's it's the right way to go it reminds me of scalone with Argentina right that's what it reminds me of a a manager that people aren't familiar with but he might not up having a ton of success and the foundation's there the Southgate Foundation is there regardless of what you think about Southgate yeah yeah and I think the other thing I'm going to ignore what you said about like the mental fragility and all that I mean some of that is true uh but uh I also think that for international football right at the end of the day you don't you don't get to spend as much time with these guys you're not able to sort of drill tactically into them the way you would as a as a club manager you get them for a few days for the Internationals then then they're gone and then for the tournaments you get them for a slightly longer period but not enough to sort of drill the tactics into them the same way so it's about having a happier Camp it's about making sure everyone's mentally there so I think kle knows these guys so I think that that's a huge advantage and like even with Spain their manager at the Euros he he's not someone who managed a lot of clubs or any of that um so yeah I think I think it's uh and we've seen that timeing again right you mentioned scalone um so yeah I I think I think in that sense it's a good move the other thing about Cosley is he plays a more attacking Style than Southgate and I think that's one of those things that England fans would just especially with the attacking talent that England has currently yeah England fans just wanted some of that it'd be nice to see some more enjoyable football rather than what we saw at the Euros well that's the thing Talent can you get the players to enjoy themselves a little more especially early on in these tournaments it's so painful to watch and you can see it on the faces of the players it's it's they're not out there enjoying themselves and yet when they're with their Club teams you know they're enjoying themselves Saka is having a great time playing for Arsenal Cole Palmer's you know the star at Chelsea there's so many moments of pure joy you see that you don't see transfer over to England I mean Jude Bellingham Jude Bellingham was half the player in the summer that we he's was one of the best players for the best club in the world yeah or maybe first or second best club in the world and he didn't look like that in the Euros yeah so so there's two players coming out of the weekend that I want to focus on one of course is Anthony Gordon who scored for uh Castle The Equalizer and the second is Cole Palmer who was basically playing in a very Central position over the weekend and led to Chelsea's you know 6-2 demolition of wolves away scored a goal set up goals uh so it was these are the two players I think that's going to be interesting uh what is carsley gonna do with them it's I'm glad you asked that uh so one of the stats that bent around was how England English teams have played Spanish teams 23 or 24 times since I don't know 2001 and Spanish teams have beaten them every single time recently or 2023 was the one time it wasn't full adult football but it was the under 21 euros and England beat Spain one- nil with Cosley as a manager and the two guys up front were Palmer and Anthony Gordon so you know I I think I mean obviously he'll he knows these guys well so I'm hoping that Gordon will get more of a run I think he's someone who will really stretch the Left Flank create more space in the middle for Palmer and others to exploit so I I don't know what formation he'll go with with England uh in that match they played a 442 which is you know quite rare in this day and age um but I suspect Palmer is going to play a big part I think there's a you know people would probably have him as a first name on the sheet if you ask the average fan like who who you'd want to be in the team I would say ahead of Bellingham um and then hopefully an Anthony Gordon can play on the left and really stretch it out I'd rather have him than Phil foron because I think Phil Phil foron didn't really like didn't do anything in the tournament really yeah so Anthony Gordon's an interesting one because that is one mistake that I think Southgate made certainly that that was to not play a player of his quality I think was a mistake and Bick you've watched some games with our dad our dad always has some some Capital points to make and and the whole tournament all he could talk about was I think he called him Craig Gordon he always gets the name wrong but he but he was talking you got to play Craig Gordon Gordon's got to be on the field and honestly he generally has some key points in every tournament I think he was right he's a player Anthony Gordon's a player and I don't know why he didn't make it Off the Bench I think it was a mistake Phil foron didn't look the player that we saw for Man City I get their reputation but at least change it up once in a while yeah I mean if you you know like the guy who has it assisted Spain's second goal or winning goal in the final urella had a Dreadful season last year he's still not rated in England I mean he's still not I I don't think he's a great player but he had that moment and like you know he did really well because he was playing down the left stretching out uh stretching out Spain's attack and I think Anthony Gordon is something similar I think he's he's probably more highly rated uh and I don't think you should just play players on reputation you play players on what they do for the team he's direct he's more direct player yeah yeah and also like for forden's part of a very well-oiled machine at City you can't replicate that in international football yeah that's the thing International Football is quite a different it's it's different in in a sense right and and you know for two things that that I'll quickly point out is one is you're getting the very best of that player on that day so even a player like kukara who week in and week out you know Holland burned him the in the first game of the Premier League season but he's not going to do that in a in in a game for Spain when the guy's locked in and you know like it's it's a you know matter of this is you know the the pl for your country you got to be locked in for 90 minutes and you know the second thing is like you said it's a different it's a different uh game because you know there's different Personnel on the field there's different tactics different styles all that kind of stuff um so so that that's that's a very different situation and especially when you're an England team that has the pace I think they need to play a little more direct than they have right because yes they have technical players but they really have where they excel at think is the speed athleticism with some of these guys Jude Bellingham plays great at PACE right his ability to control the ball in in situ in 50-50 situation situations with the ball's moving quickly that's their strength not a sort of purely possession based game and I think they had too many players they kept cutting into the center and it became a game that wasn't it didn't play to their strengths you want Jude Bellingham in the on the ball in sort of almost broken situations you know yeah yeah I agree with that and I also think that's English football's identity at the end of the day you know that's something they were criticized for back in the day just like only being physical not having enough technical players I think they do have the technical players now but if you look at you know the soul and like the heart and soul of English football is still about Pace it's about getting the ball down to the wing Crossing it in um and having those strong and fast players and you can obviously you know add to that some players with good technical ability and I think all these players do have good technical ability but I think that's that's the identity of English football and I think that's what they should stick to um yeah so I I I'm I'm quite excited about Cosley I think you know I think he'll be he'll be a good addition there's not as much pressure on the team it's obviously like a year and a bit it'll get serious with the World Cup qualification uh but I think the focus now will be the Nations League well England of course is in group b or or League B I should say because of the dmal performance they had in the last Nations league so they get the the beauty of the first match against Ireland and then Finland but finishing up on this point which is very interesting of course Lee carsley is is an Englishman like Bick but had roots in Ireland his grandmother I believe it was so he played for Ireland and now his first match in charge of the national team is against Ireland how ironic yeah he was he he is from Birmingham though he that's that's where he's born and you know I think a lot of these players are eligible for Ireland so it's it's it's not quite the same but he has s the national anthem for them I guess so you know it is it is it is somewhat meaningful it's it's not without meaning yes it's it's an interesting yeah go ahead right no no I just said this is also not the Irish team of of of the past right it's it's a particularly weak Irish team I would say at this stage yeah yeah let's see let's see Howland does it's a very interesting phenomenon though because you play for a different national team you of course like you said B he's from Birmingham he spent you know majority of his life living in England not Ireland but then it's and you set up a situation like that where there's definitely pictures of him in the green so you know that's going to be an interesting thing same same with Dean rice the way yes Dean rice and Jack Gish yeah exactly there you go yeah if far Le Car much rather coach England than Ireland right now that's for sure yeah yeah well you know I I think all our Irish fans out there let's hear what you got to say about Mr Lee carsley so we'll go from there uh of course the England national team is back in Action next week against Ireland Lee Carley's first matchback as the coach of the national team and of course bick gets to watch his beloved national team again please subscribe to the channel for those of you watching on YouTube we'll be back in a bit [Music]
