Kaitlyn Caitlyn that's actually Incorrect and normally I wouldn't cut you off but you're repeating disinformation today's breaking story is that testy rebuttal by Stacy Abrams prominent Democrat activist and former Georgia House of Representatives minority leader she was so incensed by a question by CNN anchor Caitlyn Collins that she felt compelled to fact check her in real time now we're used to seeing Fox News get instantly fact checked when they play gacha with Democrat leaders but it's less common on the more left-leaning CNN and I'll play the full exchange for you in just a minute you may remember Abrams as a rising star in the Democratic party and four years ago she was even floated as a vice president possibility and she has even gone on the record to say she'll be president by 2040 but in 2018 she ran for governor of Georgia and lost in a very controversial race and what she said about that and colins gotcha Gambit is what's in the clip you'll see shortly and more recently in fact just yesterday you may have seen that Abrams brought that same fiery energy to the stump for vice president Harris at a campaign stop in [Applause] Atlanta love you guys how to work and I'll share a little more of that later but first let's return to what led to Abram's confronting Collins in 2018 Abram's opponent for the Georgia gubinatorial seat was Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp who was in charge of Elections and voter registration during the election he was essentially in charge of overseeing his own election just a crazy conflict of interest to No One surprise Camp Juan and political scientist Michael Bernard and Daniel O'Neal described Kemp's many Shady actions in the election as the worst case of voter suppression in that election year and election law expert Richard L Hansen called Kemp perhaps the most incomp state chief elections officer in the 2018 elections pointing to a number of actions that jeopardized Georgia's election security and also to no one's surprise Abrams felt that she won the election but was robbed of it due to the underhanded voter suppression tactics by Kemp but in the end she accepted the results because that's what non- extremists do but it's that word one that's at the heart of her Interruption of Collins coming up in a few seconds and here's how she put the word into context in an interview with the New York Times magazine I feel comfortable now saying I won my larger point is look I won because we transformed the electorate we turned out people who had never voted we outmatched every Democrat in Georgia history but voter suppression is endemic and it's having a corrosive effect if we do not resolve this problem it will harm us all but what we call attention to are the 1.4 million plus who are purred Ed and the 53,000 who weren't processed and the thousands who were given provisional ballots my point is that I believe we have reached a place where those who share my values actually outnumber those who share the values of my opponent and that wasn't made manifest because of his structural racism and how he diminished people's ability to vote and now that you know the backstory That Awkward Moment where Abrams felt compelled to interrupt Caitlyn Collins will make sense well I do remember the time you you told the New York Times I won you did describe it as a stolen election the courts did side with the Secretary of State Brad raffensberger and some the challenges as well Kaitlyn Caitlyn that's actually Incorrect and normally I wouldn't cut you off but you're repeating disinformation what the court said if you read the entire uh opinion was that despite the flaws in the process that we acknowledge that the courts acknowledge they were no longer permitted to complete and fix them they could not correct the mistakes because the law had changed between 2018 and 2022 when the case was finally adjudicated there was never a moment where they said what happened was right what they said was there was no capacity to correct the mistakes and so it's important that we not only use the headlines but we read the fine print because that's where the mistakes are made that's where the challenges are I believed then and I believe now I have never been the governor of George I have never claimed to be the governor of George what I have said is that voters were denied their full rights courts agreed with me in the time of that election they agreed with me post elction the state made changes to the flaws some of them unfortunately too many of them have been restored in different ways and we continue to face voter suppression not only in Georgia but around the country because Republicans are using the ability to change the laws because we no longer have the protection of the Voting Rights Act to make it harder for average voters to show up at the polls and have their votes counted that should be the that should be where our f is that should be where our attention is and anyone who tries to distract us from that is not doing the work of protecting Democracy in America and I take your point that obviously you did not agree with the laws that were in place you didn't like the new ones that that Governor Kemp signed but and we do read past the headlines and the fine print and and one of them the court said that although Georgia's election system is not perfect the challenged practices violate neither the Constitution nor the Voting Rights Act and so I just wanted to give you a chance to to respond to that given it is something we've heard from Senator Ted Cruz and others on the show Stacy Abrams thank you for your time tonight thank you Caitlyn and respond she did and I think the bigger point is the distinction between what she said and her actions and Trump's election denialism she legally acknowledged that Brian Kemp secured a sufficient number of votes under the existing system to become the governor of Georgia and there was no Insurrection on the Georgia capital building despite the fact that she had much more cause than Trump did and that shows the Democratic party is the party of election Law and Order and the very different responses have had very different impacts on our democracy one while Abrams raised concerns about specific issues Trump's baseless claims have eroded trust in the entire system for millions of Americans two Abrams did not interfere with Kemp taking office Trump's actions disrupted the peaceful transfer of power a Cornerstone of democracy and three Abram's efforts focused on expanding voter access Trump's claims have fueled restrictive voting laws and election denialism among candidates and now I want to know what you think about the Abrams Collins Kur fuffle and your feelings of Abrams as a thought leader and influencer within the Democratic party and while you're commenting below I'll play a couple of more highlights from her compelling speech at the kamla Harris rally we've got 98 days to get this done we've got 98 days to show America what geia already knows we are a state of freem we have had dreams we got a basketball team call the dream we are a state that imagines more but we do something extra we we add a little Georgia twist we're not just scamers we are doers in the we are the ones who put our boots on the ground who put our door knocks on the doors who put the phones to our ears and if we're under the age of 25 and test everything cuz we don't know how phones work but we do the job of connecting we do the job of committing we do the job of changing America and we're going to do it again more
