Scoring Points | Will Penn State Score More in 2024? | Filmroom | Episode 138

this logo yes that's it's my preferred one too but don't tell don't tell uh don't tell the higher ups right um by the way speaking of the higher ups a little bit of housekeeping we're no longer Mercury we are officially the college sports Company still State media still hard State football but our corporate Folk management if you will the college sports company so yeah we were not canned yet no no just had to rework had to throw up some new logos up there so uh there we have that Sean um couple things to talk about today's show uh we already talked about the latest commit we actually broke the news last week of the latest commit and uh I don't want to maybe get ahead of myself here but we're going to try to maybe have some of these uh recruits on on the Pods at some point but the the last commit was tight end Matt Henderson four star tight end in the 2025 class from Virginia uh literally happened on the show last week so I wanted to just bring that up again case you know maybe people didn't turn until a little bit later on I think we didn't cover it um I believe he's a 13th member of the class from the eighth different state in the class class uh so there you go J Ben on YouTube says none of it makes any sense to me there's 400 names in regards to our uh to the podcast and how many how many different people there are so that's pretty funny um very true yeah just know the boys are always on Hardcore Penn State football that's all you need to know even though you have to find us at State media PSU and that's but that's right we're still hardcore Penn State football where you're find your podcast that's right um other than that last time we also talked about M Micah Parsons and sumo wrestling um not a whole bunch of breaking news the only other thing that we kind of caught in the tail in also is linebacker Keon Wy and potentially missing significant time um that that broke last week as well but now Sean we are like officially in like the dog days of of Summer if you will I know it's not technically Memorial Day yet but this is this is kind of where it gets a little bit slower and um you're kind of relying on whisperings here and there it's not slow in the sense of recruiting is about to to to he right yeah yeah this is um kind of the quote unquote slow time so this is kind of where podcast make their money um it's very easy to come up with content in the fall uh because there's so much going going on or even leading up to the season um in the month or month or two leading up to the season but like this is where you have to start getting creative um and still think we're gonna have a great show for you uh I know you mentioned Matt Henderson before I was able to I told you guys we do more research on him I did um you did your own research yeah just like done it's like Aaron Rogers um Sean do me a favor and uh bump your cam down to sub smiss if you can or just sit back a little bit if if you just sit back you're perfect yeah so um hend got a little Miami quarter zip on today I I do I do I don't think you have ever had that on before I may not have um yeah this is something that I wear around um but I don't think I've ever worn it here but doing a little rapping um anyway the um Henderson really fits a mold for what Penn State looks for in a tight end uh really going back to Mike Kiki who was ironically enough recruited by Bill O'Brien so really really athletic like when you watch when you watch him play when you watch his highlights his athleticism just stands out to me um looks like he's he's obviously going to need some work in the weight room but just reminds me a lot of giki like when giki was coming out was around it was really the same story um needed to learn how to be a tight end but the receiving skills were there so I think this is a guy just based off traits alone you're going to see uh shoot up rankings because right now he is a four-star on Rivals uh but 247 and on three either they just evaluated him or they haven't gotten to him yet um he's going to be highly regarded um I'm not saying he's gonna make a Luke Reynolds type uh type jump but it wouldn't surprise me if he's a fourstar guy on well I guess we'll consider ESPN to like three of the four uh recruiting sites yeah speaking of that we actually have one film room play today by tight end so good little transition there um got a couple fan questions to go over at the end of the show as well um Sean anything else that's really pressing your mind right now I have one thing I want to discuss but otherwise I'll let you go uh I saw there's um some debate about uh this is more of a general college football thing um about how the the powers that be are really debating the revenue sharing right now so I think we may see some like official official proposal on that within the next few weeks here so just something to keep an eye out for yeah and this wasn't something that I originally was going to talk about but I did see that there is some whisperings about Florida State leaving the ACC and that Clemson would be be following soon as well so keep that in the back of your mind as things kind of uh things develop this is the time where those things happen is right about now all the way until about July so um keep an eye out for that uh Jay well before we get to Jay Ben's comment on YouTube which we really appreciate the interaction on YouTube U make sure you've liked the video and if you haven't already subscribed make sure to subscribe there as well but uh this is one of those shows where we don't have a bunch of things to talk about so if you guys have things in the chat throw them in there and we'll be we'll be pretty interactive tonight um before we get to J Ben's point the only other thing I was going to mention was Clemson Georgia is officially a noon kick yeah and uh that really really makes it seem like the Penn State West Virginia game is likely going to be an evening kick um on I think ESPN most likely so uh keep that in mind you don't think we get big noon no I don't I think they already have a I think they already have their big noon for that week do they who who give me a second yeah because I I actually saw a lot of people speculating that it would be a big noon game um I don't think there's been a Thursday or Friday night announcement yet um which is something that pet state has played in uh P I think it was a it was a Thursday night game well okay I'm sorry so week two and week three they've decided okay week two it's Texas at Michigan week three is Alabama at Wisconsin so September 7th is Texas at Michigan so theoretically I don't think it's gonna be though yeah don't think so no let me see I mean I maybe I don't have like a scientific reason let me just here is it wishful thinking well partially because I think I'm going to be going to it um but let me see here I'll be coming home from the beach that day so so you don't necessarily care as much well I mean if it's at noon gonna have to leave at like s or 8 in the morning so which it'd be okay with me I still have to check with the fiance cuz I want to watch that game with uh want to watch that game with my grandpa who's definitely watching right now so hey Gramps um and um yeah I'll be coming home so I would kind of prefer to be a 330 game but it looks like all the 3:30 slots look pretty much booked so because see we have any a night game would have to benefit West Virginia I would it in my mind but just as a college football fan big new so they have the ABC game is Notre Dame at Texas A&M and they okay so they already have I think they have Fox game already too they have ESPN Western Kentucky at Alabama's at 7 p.m on ESPN so it's not looking good for the home team it's really not looking good for the home team USC LSU on Sunday that's actually a really fantastic game that might that game might be literally 55 to 62 but uh yeah now I didn't realize Alabama Western Kentucky was already at seven o'clock so I mean there's other options right like you know it could NBC hasn't said what their game is for that day either so that could potentially be the the NBC game again but man there's not a lot of big there's not a lot of fox options as far as big noon kick that I'm seeing here that I'm feeling good that might take the cake over it um there's really nothing that I can even like try to make myself feel better with I mean we've got a lot of really bad teams playing a lot of other really bad teams Wisconsin plays Western Michigan Washington plays Weber State ha y UCLA no I mean there's no F Fresno State Michigan what about Big 12 that's what I I I don't even see any good last year I think was it was Colorado TCU and that made everybody well a lot of dumb people think Colorado was some Contender for something yeah I don't see any yeah I Iowa State North Dakota not North Dakota State just North Dakota Oklahoma State South Dakota State not good Houston UNLV Gustin Joel ain't going to Vegas I mean there's really not much well set your alarms for 11: a.m. yeah I mean there's there there's really really not that much unfortunately but I maybe maybe it doesn't matter right maybe NBC gets that pick I heard NBC got more picks this year and ESPN got more picks this year I don't know and even though West Virginia is the home team NBC could still have that game right I assume so yeah I would think so um um all right anyway back to it here uh Jay Ben said without being run-of-the-mill Penn State pessimist I am dreading seeing Tyler ell in on the field potentially more with Abdul Carter moving and and Keon Wy now injured feel like you could have mixed and matched um couldn't agree more we talked about that a little bit on last week's episode but it's funny because I think they put Tyler Ellen's highlight on Twitter today and social media like you know they've been doing every player I didn't even bother to watch Tyler Ellen's highlights I mean I mean he had the play in the Ohio State game what did he do in the Ohio State game I can't remember he recovered that fumble on the punt oh that's right that hit off the player yes all right let's see here yeah see they didn't even do okay this isn't this is gonna look at really bad but they didn't even do film of him they just did a 30 second thing of him tackling uh what's his face from Ruckers and then a tackle in the Maryland game IND Indiana game and then a hurry on Iowa's quarterback and a tackle on Donovan Edwards that's it but not like actual highlights just like close in looks why why do you think they're doing those you think they're just doing to for fun or to keep people happy or I don't know but you know this is another weird thing that I didn't realize that we should start doing them these this year so I mean I'm assuming to give them a little bit more love from nil perspective like if you know who these guys are and where the plays they made like hey don't forget about them that's my guess but here's the other thing and maybe they did this before um when did the uh the summer players come in May I thought they usually didn't come into the second session yeah so the the way they're doing them because I thought the same thing there's some coming in May and then some are coming in July um okay and that's new that hasn't happened before like tyer Denmark for example isn't here yet okay but I saw Peter Gonzalez is here which yeah like where's taer Denmark and then I found out oh they're still doing that July thing so which makes me feel a lot better the fan question last week was which player that didn't enroll early is going to have a better impact now my guy my wide receiver has couple a month or two head start over your guy so I'm feeling pretty good yeah yeah so it's um so yeah those so those four guys I think it was Gonzalez speca Malachi Williams [Music] and um WR down Caleb Brewer Caleb Brewer yep so they're all there now so um so or the blog he says I don't think NBC has access to the Big 12 12 home games ah okay which would be not which would not be good for us yeah looks like us and juwel are coming Joel clatt just said we have the best atmosphere in college football though so I I did I saw that too so here's my thing though maybe they go see the national champions in Michigan take on whoever the hell I just said they were it wasn't an awful opponent who did I say Michigan's playing Fresno State pretty bad but not awful yeah and their Heyday Fresno State was a pretty good program um but yeah you never know I mean Gus and Joel love them some Michigan it's first game of the shwn Moore era yeah kind of trying to talk Fox into and doing this right now if you're listening come on just do it just go to Michigan Right Jay Ben says he has 10 Clips saved on his phone of him out of position he directly is a huge play for the opposing team if we're talking about inches these are the inches that need to be resolved um Jay Ben I don't know if you listen to us often but um preaching to the choir yeah like honestly look for a guy like a Tamir Robinson um we have some young linebackers here who may be nipping at um Ellen's heels to be the second guy so I know it's sucked losing Keon Wy who now I'm not a practice every day so I can't say definitively but every time I saw him I kind of thought he was better than Tyler Alon um I think there's a real chance that one of these Young Guns could come up behind him this year and maybe take that backup job Ive well for the blog he just ruined my whole day it was announced yesterday Fresno State Michigan's on NBC Prime Time darn ESPN hasn't even updated their schedule yet to show that so and peacock has Nebraska Colorado really I'm gon end up having to buy peacock at some point this year aren't I Oh I thought Fox would be all over that because Joel played at Colorado oh I'm sorry and he's he's and he's been weirdly silent on Colorado for the past like eight months I don't know after hyping Dion up all last summer well they're saying they're confusing me this says Big 10 Saturday night on NBC and peacock schedule week one and two and it says and it says week one Fresno State Michigan and then it says week two Nebraska Colorado so maybe I'm assuming Nebraska is a NBC one then yeah and that's probably because that's that's got to be a prank Time game yeah but I don't see what the peacock game is so that's why that doesn't make much sense to me the way they worded that but yeah that's probably what it is um Notre day might be peacock too what he has with the time frame for when it be decided who knows right I mean I would doubt they wait they're not going to like eight day window it I don't even know if they're allowed to do that for the first for the first yeah we'll know soon yeah next month people are picking right now so yeah pretty much every year we fight out around now for the first game Jay Ben says I'll start listening more appreciate the realistic viewpoints without just being overly down on them overall thank you appreciate that um all right so we've really kind of I mean this is okay but we've really kind of just gone all over the place here um so it sounds like it might end up being Fox newon kickoff that's what it's looking like like fun at this point they'd be kind of dumb not to right I mean like that's the whole point of fox doing this big newon kickoff it's not really for the good at college football or what the fans want but it is a money maker and people are going to be watching West Virginia and Penn State yeah yeah okay um Sean do you have anything else before we go to the film room no it's go go to [Music] [Music] filmer all righty let me pause that there welcome into the family clothline film room first play we are going to show you today from the blue and white game is a little tight end screen you know the reason I brought this play up Sean was I felt like we did a lot more of this kind of stuff early on and then it completely just disappeared by Midway point in the season and that just honestly shouldn't happen um wanted to give a shout out to the offensive line thought they did a really good job there but also really kind of wanted to bring up this play because I think Drew Aller does a really good job being patient with it uh but also to highlight C dinkin because dinkin is going to have to play a larger role in this offense this year and he he showed up big time especially on fourth down that was kind of the joke with him was he was always showing up on fourth down uh but he's going to have to contribute quite a bit more and um I think he's a great recipient for plays like this I think this is a guy you want to get out and space a little bit and let him do his thing so um simple play here but again really wanted to highlight two things one they need to do more of this and and two CLE dinkin is gonna have to be a big part of this offense yeah C dinkin feels like the Forgotten man in this tight end room with Luke Reynolds there Andrew Raper um but CLE dinkin was productive last year especially for a third tight end so I don't think it's going to be easy to LeapFrog him for any of these uh any of these guys coming up behind him um and yeah there were lots of issues with uch last year one of them was going away from what worked and just you know he'd show something and be like oh that's great and then we just wouldn't see it again you know the people always say like you know he you know oh got more stuff up their sleeve like early in the season with like your Stitch it was like he was putting stuff back in his sleeve as the season went on he took it off the table right um all right so I want to go to this play Because all right well let me just start the recording family clothesline film room brings you this play I wanted to bring this one up Sean because I saw some some Drew Aller slander on on X the other day and you know we're not very massive derler fans we're pretty realistic with how his gamees been so far but somebody was like showing his box score stats and like oh look J's still garbage well yes it was windy but I also wanted to show this play that obviously didn't count and uh and you'll see why but this to me is is a really nice play by Drew Aller here now again very windy maybe the ball placement could have been a little bit better but I this is still probably a touchdown the true freshman belgrave shorter doesn't get all up in the business here of Trey Wallace what I really like which makes me feel a lot better and maybe he did this knowing that he technically couldn't be hit but he did hang in the pocket and deliver this football now does he do this in a non scrimmage situation where he can actually be hit I don't know but he did hang in there and deliver a catchable football That Was Then erased by the penalty so um I you know I don't I'm not doing this to to crap on belgrave shorter because I thought he actually had a really good blue and white game but to show hey box score-wise this this would have been six and a really nice play if if not for the pass interference so um again who knows maybe he's sacked there in real life maybe he doesn't hang in there as much in a real game but regardless he did in this situation yeah it was a confident throw and when Drew struggled last year when you'd go back and watch the games you would most of the time you would see before the ball's even thrown he doesn't look calm in the pocket and fce you know on the other hand when he'd have his best throws just look so confident coming out of his hand I just looks so um he just looks so comfortable with the ball coming out of his hand this is a good example of it um guy gets interfered with and you know you look at it this way yeah I mean it's not a touchdown because of the interference but it's 15 yard gain so you have to think of it that way and giving your guys a chance to make a play that's something else we didn't see enough from drewal last year so yeah you're saying just just throw it up there throw it deep as the great Corey Gyer would say front of the Pod Cory gger by the way last one I want to show you here this one kind of curious on again this film room is brought to you by family clothline this is a play where I think Drew Allard may have done this wrong now back up in the game here at running back could have is you know affected this play quite a bit but this is going to be a play that they ran a lot with Mike geich um the last two years and this is just your simple RPO as the ability to throw this out in the flat and or run it if he wants now the mesh doesn't really seem to be comfortable and it's a little bit botched from the get-go but theoretically this defensive end maybe hangs tight and maybe he should hand this off and and 54 just ruined the play but I still think that he collapsed enough where Aller could have pulled this ball and got either then went downhill and forced this this uh next Defender to either take him or take the tight end or he could have just thrown it out there real quick and just given his guy a chance in space either way this to me is what Andy cotal Nikki is gonna have to figure out with Drew Aller our defense is going to respect allers running ability enough where you can run these kind of plays because last year they didn't and because of that it never really worked the way you wanted it to and and they weren't able to have the same uh explosiveness and fluidness in the running game when they had bo pil in there so this is just one example it's early on again backup running backs in the game but they're probably going to run this play at some point during the year and my question is is he going to the confidence to pull this ball and then is he going to be able to flick it is he going to um threaten the defense enough with his legs to where this play is going to be successful yeah that was a small but consistent problem Penn State had all his season last year because Drew jaler rarely ever kept the ball and you have to cater to what your quarterback is comfortable with doing and evidently J was not comfortable keeping the football in these read options last season that's fine but I thought they went back to that well too many times and just we're getting nothing with it because all it does is delay everything when there's no threat from the quarterback and running back gains a couple yards at most and that's if the offensive line does a good job and here they really don't do a good job because 54 blows the play up uh but nonetheless if you have a quarterback comfortable keeping yeah is's going to be able to maybe he'd still have to beat he'd still have to beat 45 to the outside but at the but if that happens then you just toss it off to then you just toss it off to rapley and uh going toward the flat so it's a small issue with the offense but it it caused some it did cause issues last season you're right this is something that going forward cotal Nikki has to adjust to and it may mean that only B when he gets in runs read options and that's fine with me yeah 50 really whiffs on his block there too that doesn't help things but I still think you see enough of a collapse there where you can pull this ball and and afterwards you can see Aller kind of like chicking his head like did he did did the running back clamp down on it too much and he was trying to pull it who knows but regardless like those are things you got to clean up before obviously the season starts that will do for the film room um I'm going to I'm trying to just do like three plays every week to keep it interesting I I might even go to some older film back during the season um I might go to some opponent film for maybe some of the the players to pay attention to but G to try to keep doing a couple episodes um or a couple couple Clips each episode um all right I think Sean we're uh we're ready for the fan questions yep bring him on all righty for the blocky says feels like in this moment it just felt like the uh the running back said F this this is my moment and didn't let Aller pull it yeah I mean that's that's that's possible as well I see that we're not really getting that to there we go don't know what that was all about um all right let's speaking of codal Nikki let's just start there shall we all right ban questions brought to you by us potato chips look talked to you about the honey bar garlic or honey barbecue it's my favorite chip flavor but they've got pretzels they've got snacks they've got all sorts of things going on there um first question is brought to you by something voted rights I can't even read it all the way um what do you think about the new offensive coordinator's ability to develop wide receivers quickly this season and where will that need to fall on the priority list for the offense and then his favorite restaurant we asked this week he says love the tavern um so I think it's extremely high on the list right I mean he's going to have Marcus Hagen obviously helping him but I mean I think you kind of have to figure out you kind of have to figure out the wide receivers and is it development or is it just putting him in better positions to succeed but I'm gonna say this Sean I'm gonna get out in front of it this year I'm just gonna say straight up the receivers also own some of the responsibility to get better as well sure of course yeah and I think that's a big part of big part of this you know Steve Jones said and he's been around a long long time and he goes to all the practices so out of anybody I mean I would to quite say he covers team because he works for the school um but anybody who comments on this team publicly nobody knows more and he said every single great player he's ever he's ever seen a pet State they all have one thing in common they all want to be coached hard they all want to be coached and they all you know that's the one trait that you see in every one of them so yeah there's a want Factor here as well from other receivers cuz we've talked at nauseum this is it's not a talent issue it's about getting better and yes a lot of that it falls on the coach it's coach's job to get the most out of his players and that falls on Marcus hains that falls on Andy codel Nikki that falls on James Franklin that's that's an everybody thing and they didn't do a good enough job last season so but yeah part of it is on the players doing extra work putting that you know trying to be that first guy in last guy last guy out and from The Whispers we heard around the program there weren't a lot of guys like that in the receiver room last season so you're going to need more of that and maybe with Julian Fleming coming in you will find that um I'll say this about the offensive coordinator Andy codal Nikki um he just was at Kansas and Kansas had a much more explosive offense than Penn State last season so he has the ability to make to make something out of nothing and not not to say that those Kansas guys are nothing but like compared to the recruiting rankings that Pence that Penn State guys have yeah way less Talent there um and they were more explosive so yeah he has the ability to do it um it's just something that has to get done and I'll say this too about Andy Cotto Nikki he's never been at a and it's and I I like him I think he was a good hire I was very very happy with the hire he's never been at a place like Penn State he's been at Kansas they're happy if they go eight and four they're happy if they go nine and three so the expectations and the margin of error are completely different than anywhere he's ever been okay so yeah I mean it's on him to get this right now flip side Mike gich was in a was at a ton of Big Time schools uh didn't really help here so it's it's it's not obvious the answer to just go try to steal a guy from Ohio State like no that's not always the answer either but it's just something to keep in the back of your mind and uh yeah it's a high priority and I've never been to the tavern uh really good prime rib yeah it always looked good in there I just never went all right next UTS fan question brought to you by a personal friend of the Pod Randy cely why am I not more optimistic about this season losses along the offensive line questionable receiver upgrades all new off all new coordinators and an upgrade in opponents I struggle to see a nine win season and for a quick meal he says CC Peppers The Tavern for a tradition in history lots of good options so two for the tavern Sean why isn't Randy cely or why why do you agree or don't agree with Randy cely to be optimistic about the season without knowing him personally I understand being cautious about it um you know we were carried by the defense through big parts of last season and the defense in all likelihood won't be as good this season still think they'll be good but that was an elite defense that you saw and I'm not convinced this is going to be an elite defense it'll be really good though um so I understand not being too high especially when you can't really trust the offense so I really think it's going to come down to how much worse is the defense and how much better is the offense and that'll probably tell the story of the year um I could definitely see a nine- win season I think I would to call nine the floor but um you look at the schedule Ohio state was Ohio State uh Washington's not as scary as they looked back in their title run um they don't play Oregon they have to go to USC that'll be a challenging game and I think the West Virginia game could tell the story of this season really I think it reminds me a lot of the Purdue game from 2022 and it could really set things in Motion in a good way or a bad way so this is a big big opener yeah Purdue um Indiana 2020 yeah that's another one on the flip side so and and I agree I mean here's my thing about it and why I'm cautiously optimistic is there's just so much talent still that I agree with you like a floor of nine wins seems to be like a solid floor they can go to 10 they can go to 11 wins on upgrades at quarterback and wide receiver um and and getting away with with a little bit less depth at linebacker that we've already discussed and the corners being good enough um you always need a little bit of luck in this sprinkled in there too but I think they have so much talent that it people just like try to Resort back to this like Penn State 8 and four team and kind of forget like they have so much talent now compared to like the mid 2000s 2010s where they don't lose like a couple good players and all of a sudden they're back to eight and four like the overall depth of this team is still phenomenal compared to anything we've ever experienced but do they have enough dogs at the correct positions to get them further along I don't know but I agree kind of a floor of nine wins is kind of where I'm at right now early early on I'd probably put my floor at eight but yeah we're right around the same all righty last question last fan question presented by UTS will gamble Penn State points per game last year was 36.2 three with anal Cody Nikki will you guys take the over or under on that number and then same for our defense we allowed 13.4 six points per game would you guys take the under or over for that number in 2024 his favorite place to eat Peta Cabana Grill or pit Cabana Grill sorry yep Sean I'm gon let you go first there okay uh defense I'll take the over uh 13.6 that's pretty that's really really good uh so I think it'll be a little higher not much though uh on offense I could see it going and go either way um but it's my job to have a take so I'll take the slight over um but really in my mind it's not really that relevant um on offense for the year because look you could put up like last year's offense was really inflated by playing the um asses of the world we played Delaware uh a dead Michigan State team so it was really inflated by some pretty awful teams and yeah it looked a lot better than it ended up being it's about how do you look against Ohio State how do you look against uh West Virginia USC you should be able actually should be able to put up a lot of points against yeah you should be able to put up a lot of points against them uh Washington so it's about how you look against the teams that that are really really good that I more interested in because last year you play Ohio State you played Michigan you scored 15 against michig michan and we scored what 10 or 12 against Ohio State so those were the numbers like those were the important numbers um that those were the important scores that really a lot of penate fans are using to Define last season and I think in a lot of ways that's fair I agreed with you and so I pulled it up because I was curious Penn State average 31.3 points per game in conference so that to me is a more realistic number and even with that number I would feel better taking the over partly because they're going to play USC this year uh that that's going to help things a little bit in that regard I agree with you I would take the over for the defense I mean what they did last year was phenomenal and I expect the quarterbacks to be better in the Big 10 last year the quarterbacks were awful in the Big 10 last year and that that definitely helped things I don't I don't know how much better the quarterbacks are going to be this year but I expect them to at least be a little bit better um and so I mean heck the defense could still just average 15 points per game who knows but I think it's going to be more than that 13 and then offensively I think they do do a little bit better um but we'll have to wait and see there Franklin fanatic says I think the team will have a much better attitude in 20 24 Sean what are your thoughts on that well that's that's important especially at certain positions um this season so I hope so I hope so um I think at the positions that we talk about the most with the attitude I think it will be better because there's more adults in the room now I think the leadership just in general get we talked about this back in January or whatever it was but getting Devon Ellie back was huge for them from a from a leadership perspective um getting Julian Fleming was huge we think from a leadership perspective so you got to feel better about that group and uh and that that should go a long way with some of those things um Sean the EP you know the episode today was called scoring points so I mean I guess to wrap it up and I love that question because it did help us get there but to wrap up today's episode you know how does Penn State score more points in it his game that matter I don't know go to an Cal Nikki yeah um no I mean I think and how much is it I mean I guess to to help you out here like do we just need better quarterback play is it that simple that's part of it but I don't think it's the whole story um you know something I brought up last week was a forgotten part of last season was we didn't run the ball well enough like they weren't we weren't terrible running the ball but Nick Singleton especially like the first two-thirds of the Season just wasn't good running the ball um now I know Franklin will defend him and say he was better at sophomore season than his freshman year and some aspects he was but from what we needed from him he he wasn't and it was probably partly on him partly on the line um and that's a way that that's a Surefire way to open up the offense is run the ball better and it's going to theoretically open things up for the receivers for Drew Allard to play better uh yeah part of it falls on Drew and part of it falls on the coaches to put their best guys in positions to succeed because that was also something that we didn't do a good enough job with uh with Nick Singleton in particular um they didn't bounce him to the outside really until Mike Urich was fired and that's where that's where uh Nick Singleton has chance to do most of his damage getting him in getting him out in space so um it's everything in my mind yeah and I think you summed it up really well there the biggest thing to me was you know we film room last year was difficult difficult during the season because when we saw the plays we were like look a lot of times the plays were there to be made especially the Ohio State game that was probably one of the most painful games Adam brenman even backed us up on that like that was a painful game because of the lack of execution now that slowly kind of changed as we got further into the season Michigan game especially was maybe a little bit less good play calling and a little bit um Less on the poor execution but there was plenty of opportunities to make plays especially early on and you're just thinking again football is so much about momentum and the lack of a couple plays executing makes a huge difference as far as the confidence I it just changes the whole complexity of the team so I agree with everything you said early on too starting out strong against West Virginia could really set the course for the entire season which I don't know where you're at right now but that to me is going to be a a big part of this and and and I don't know if I feel good about that West Virginia game or not yeah yeah it's gonna be a close one in my mind and I want to do more research you and a half right now yeah that's too high you think it's too high I think so yeah I mean it's gonna be even if it's big noon kickoff it will take the sale take the wind out of the sales of the environment a bit but still it's going to be a rowdy crowd and yeah they're going to I I think they're a little unhappy with how the game ended last season you know we we were really desperate to cover the spread kind of forgot about that yeah so there could be some hurt feelings I mean I always think it's stop us um but still that's motivation and you're going to want to try to get back at the team who did that and so there's and there's um the historic rivalry between West Virginia and Penn State so I think that probably means a little bit more to West Virginia than it does to Penn State and yeah it's goingon to be a tough game and West Virginia is a damn good football team like they were better last year than people thought they'd be and I think they're going to be even better this season so yeah I'm not feeling as good as I did going into last year's game I'll say that yeah but they do not have Zack Frasier which I think is going to be a big part of it he was one of the best players that Pence played last year oh another thing I wanted to say oh yeah um you said start out the season another way like this offense could be better every game it felt like last season except the West Virginia game they started off so slow on offense they have to get off to better starts because every single game it felt like we were behind the eightball even against like crappy teams yeah we still just slep walk through the first quarter didn't matter e some people put a lot of stock into that whole 11:00 a.m. start in the midwest but no we could have been playing on the moon we just started slow each week so that's another thing I want to see better this season easy enough well I think that's all we have uh no episode next week and then we'll be back the following week there might be something before then but keep an eye out for that Sean Kane any final thoughts no I think we're good here awesome thank you guys especially Jay Ben Franklin fanatic and for the blogging for keeping it live in the chat we will be back
