REACTION: Hugh Freeze gave us a depth chart and talked about week one vs Alabama A&M | Auburn Tigers

radio Legend Daryl dapp hanging out with us as we react to What Hugh free said at his press conference the first of the year the regularly scheduled Monday pressers we're back baby we are back uh we we'll go in chronological order here and I think what people will be most interested in regarding the depth chart that they handed out to media and attendance there and to me the first thing you notice is all the ores on the right side of the page which is defense and so they've got I mean three or four starters listed at every defensive spot we've talked about the depth Daryl we've talked about the rotation possibilities and it sounds like freeze legitimately believes that it doesn't matter who starts it's just they're all gonna play yes he absolutely does gives no Credence to depth charts does not like them does not put any stock in if he said that he said it does matter to the players and their mamas I think that when he talked about the def defensive line it was very telling that he said six guys are going to play a lot of snaps yeah and I don't care who got goes out there first that they all be better be ready to play I like that and we T and we thought that Auburn was gonna have good defensive line depth and it looks like they are um I don't care who starts I mean you know we did that exercise where we did a a mock dep chart back I guess about a month and a half ago for Auburn daily and it was pretty close to what we had but it doesn't matter it does not matter who goes out there for the first snap and I love that it do it seems to me unless I'm reading too much into and I want you to be my fact checker on this okay it seems to me that the six dudes that he talks about are going to get Equitable snaps that you know you normally see a starter then a backup and and the Snaps are distributed and the plays are distributed accordingly to me it sounds like it's like in a pool and everybody's going to play similar snaps sure yeah I mean and to me that's kind of what the defensive side of the depth chart should be same with receiver and running back it's who do you think is going to get the most snaps to me that's what I look at it like I don't really care about you know who's out there the first snap of the game but it's like we all believe you know even though the defensive end spot is keldrick Faulk or zakus Walker or amarus Williams if you had to predict like the level of impact and who's going to be on the field the most like I think we would all say it's probably keldric by a long shot than amarus then zakus but uh sure I mean I don't think it's crazy to think that you're gonna see legit playing time from Philip bleedy from Malik blockton to Gage keys to TJ Lindsay and then also Isaiah Rees Jason Jones TR Carter and um Quint trell Jameson Travis yeah like all of those guys all of those guys are gonna play for sure but there will be a pecking order and there will be over the course of the Season guys who play more snaps than other guys and like I don't think that's a crazy thing to say but as far as starters I understand why he did this I do too and I and I you're right I mean as you get into game three and game four it starts to kind of filter and sift itself itself out um I still think when Auburn goes to Georgia there's going to be six dudes playing along the defensive line and when you look at plays at the end of the game I just feel like they're going to be very similar I I I really do you say when you say defensive line you mean d end as well or do you was talking about nose tackle interior interior yes who are the six in your mind um Travis Keys Carter Rees bleedy and Jason Jones okay yeah I'm cool with that did you say blockton I did not um and I didn't say Walker either um I'm saying that because he said six so I I don't you know I don't know he said six two or three times so who is he assuming isn't GNA get in the rotation I don't know blockton could get in there absolutely yeah I think your top three at knows in no particular order Rees Jones Jameson Travis and your top three of defensive tackle are bleedy blocked in and keys so we'll see as far as as far as other depth chart conversations the left side of the off of line was one of the first questions he asked because he talked about that last time uh they have Percy Lewis or Tyler Johnson listed as the left tackle starters every other starter on offense is straight up that's the only or he was asked about it said it was a rotation of Percy Lewis Tyler Johnson Dylan Wade and Braden Joiner all kind of rotating on that left side we'll see certainly seems like that battle isn't going anywhere my gut feeling just gut feeling on the left of the offensive line is they want Tyler Johnson to step up and take it that's that's the gut feeling I have with that and it doesn't sound like he had a particularly strong in to fall Camp is what I was told I think they want him to say hey this position is open come win it that that's the feeling I get wow that I'm gonna push back on that a little bit if that's the feeling that they that you have or if that's what they want then why did they go out and get Percy Lewis in the portal to be their starter and Rave about him in the after the spring and say this is a guy that I mean I it it it doesn't it's such a misevaluation I think he's under a chief so far yeah but you you not you don't throw in you don't give up on him this quick and hope that he gets unseated and and hopes that he gets beat out you went out and got a guy that was a two-year starter at Mississippi State to be a plug-and-play guy at offensive tackle if you've kicked the can on him already this far then that's that's a big- Time concern on a Miss of evaluating an offensive tackle maybe but where we've seen the misses add up in the past at Auburn is when they missed on a guy and they had to play him anyway they don't have to play a guy that they missed on anymore if Tyler Johnson's the better tackle than Percy you put Tyler Johnson in we talked about this last week at least the options are there I think you can miss on a guy and when you have depth and multiple options the Miss isn't as big of a deal as it typically is I think if you miss on Percy but you have Tyler Johnson maybe be ahead of schedule who cares if you missed or not your job is to fill out a roster and fill out an offense and and I think you check all of those boxes if that's the case Auburn has missed on guys in the past and that was the only option so to me I do think there is a difference here I think that it's different in this day and age though because of nil allocation and only having so much nil budget when you spend the nil dollars you did to go get a Percy Lewis at left tackle that could have been better spent elsewhere if you felt like Johnson could have taken that role is all I'm saying sure I get it I get it but the other side of that coin is Percy's done after this year so it's not like you're in a situation where you got to have an awkward conversation right at the end of the year if he isn't the best option at left tackle so we'll see we'll see and then uh just to wrap up the the dep start conversation he did say they're still looking at safety trying to figure out safety which I assume which I assume is Sylvester Smith and Caleb wooden even though they're listed at different safety spots on defense that's just kind of what I've heard throughout fall Camp is those back I think Thompson is penciled in as a solid starter who's next to Jared Thompson yeah I'll tell you something I found interesting it could just be that I missed the boat on this but I'm really intrigued by the the or on the backup slot receiver that Malcolm Simmons I I just thought he was an outside guy and they've got him listed as the backup to ber Lewis or Sam Jackson right behind Lewis both of them that's pretty cool yeah the scrimmage where he was like feasting the the semiopen scrimmage they had him in motion a lot you typically see that with your slot guy so we'll see we'll certainly see what that looks like um and then with kicker they have Alex mcferson listed as a starter but freeze was asked about it sounds like towns meoo is gonna be expected he's preparing to be the starter but it sounds like Alex is on his way to recovery um and being that guy you don't have to rush that which is good after seeing with the spring performance of towns Magoo 100% you can wait a couple weeks to make sure he's fully 100% strong and his strength and knock the rust off you know that's a good thing about kicking right I mean you can kick and practice on the side and that kind of thing 100% 100% okay uh what did H free say during his presser it to me I I think there's kind of a few themes outside of the depth chart related conversation that we already touched on uh including an interesting role did he mean this when he talked about Sam Jackson that's coming now go to 5our energy.com today darl when he uh when he was asked about Sam Jackson he listed him among the wide receiver the slot wide receivers there's kind of been some question like how they would use him and so he listed him with the slots which makes sense Robert Lewis um Bryce Kane Malcolm Simmons and then he talked about how blessed they were to have them and all that and then kind of made just an off-handed comment I didn't think much of it you did of we may even see him at Wildcat you think he kind of reacted after he said it to say hey maybe he was kind of teasing something I just you know he was listing how they were going to utilize him they said jet sweeps they said screens and end the passing game and then he said you might even see him in Wildcat you never know and I I don't think he says that I I think we will see him in the Wildcat at some at some point sure or else unless he's trying to give somebody something to think about but I don't I think he will now I know a lot of people sometimes really get frustrated with the wild cat but think about this Sam Jackson in that role could be a guy that could throw off of the Wildcat formation normally I mean K on Johnson did it I'm against it by the way gim yeah I'm against it I mean we saw this obviously how it's used matters but like we saw this essentially with Robbie last year and just the way it was used and the timing never made sense I think it can be used and implemented in situations where it does make sense but the way it was used last year did it it it stalled the offense more than once and I I just think that was concerning so if they do it I hope it's handled differently than it was a year ago yeah I think about you know the jet I mean the Wildcats that booby Whitlow used to run it a lot and had some success inside the five and then handed the ball off to sha Shivers out of the Wildcat which the famous painting uh where he takes off the D the Alabama guys helmet on the Jet Sweep was that was that from a wildcat play it was it was from a Wild play but it wasn't sea Shan Shivers wasn't in the Wildcat but he got a handoff yeah yeah I don't remember I believe so it was from a wild cat a running back uh handing the ball off so yeah and that might have been I don't remember if it was Whit low but I don't remember who it was in the backfield but he did and and then it was the Jet Sweep off of that so I I I wasn't a big Wildcat guy I mean I hated it as well but I think that you if you can utilize it and throw some wrinkles in it it can be effective when he was uh talking about Alabama A&M which we'll talk more about them as the week goes on he talked about that they sounds like they still got a quarterback battle and I've got I've already uh recorded a show with their head coach and he talks about that as well so that'll drop later in the week but yeah so and then the other thing was he was asked about like assuming Keon Scott was good to go which it sounds like he's questionable for Saturday assuming he was healthy what the punt returner situation look like and he said Keon Scott Dre which is kls um Bryce Malcolm and then he said if it's a situation where they just have to catch it and he pounded his fist on the desk and said where we just have to maintain possession boy that wasn't a call back yeah yeah let's put will Upton back there uh in the Iron Bowl last year maybe we win but yeah so I thought that was interesting um two upper classmen with keontay and KS and then two freshman with Bryce Kane and Malcolm Simmons it's good I mean there's options and it sounds like he feels comfortable with any of those four actually Five Guys which is pretty sweet to have like you said Auburn would have loved to have had that towards the end of last year right no question no question uh all right cool we just wanted to kind of hop on real quick and react to uh the depth chart and and some of the things that H free set Daryl how can people check out
