hello and welcome to another episode of Back N Report with our good friend Carlos Torres Carlos how you doing this evening I'm doing great great Fred thank you for having me and happy to talk team sports hey team sports International competition we got no this is not a Ryder Cup year it is a soan cup year which is coming up in a couple weeks for the LPGA and the women players but we've got a president Cup coming up here at the end of the year up at Royal Montreal up in Canada uh uh teams were just picked today Carlos what do you think what's your what's your uh feelings about the upcoming President's Cup ah oh well do I really have to say my true feelings I don't know if I'm gonna watch it but I I knew what you're gonna say they might as well not hold it I don't care yeah it's I me after seeing the teams it's like oh my goodness uh but hey it is what it is I think uh the the selections from uh Jim furck he went on the safe side and uh picked the players that he had to to make sure that complement the other six I'm a little bit more worried about the depth of the international team uh but definitely we're going to talk about who's not going to be here as well so so far I think the teams look the weakest that I have they seen them in years right now well you've got those livv guys that aren't available able for either team and we'll talk about that in a minute you know but we're going to be up it's going to be held in Royal Monte all at the end of the month um Team USA of course is led by Scotty Sheffer Xander Schley Colin morow wam Clark Patrick kley and sahi theala all qualified on points they were the top six and then Jim six picks were right down the line Carlos 789 10 11 12 uh no controvers there you've got uh Sam Burns Tony fenile Russell Henley Keegan Bradley who's also the rder Cup captain coming up next year Brian Harmon and Max hom now who we don't have is Justin Thomas who made the big deal about getting on the team on the rder Cup team last year and then was such a kind of a flop uh also there's no Jordan Speed who just had hand surgery uh so he's not available or Billy horel who's kind of a veteran kind of player uh also you've got some guys who are in livv who maybe a Brooks Kea or a Dustin Johnson or a Bryson D Shambo that would could be a force but they're not eligible for this thing because they're suspended from PJ tour and the President's Cup is owned by the PJ tour what's your thoughts on these picks and these players for the United States well the only one that I really I'm a little bit on the fence it would be JT right um and uh Jordan Speed you mentioned it he just had surgery there's no way he can play Billy Ho well he he's a is a chewing if you're going to make him there with all the other six that are right there I don't think that he's going to make a difference maybe the veteran presence would have been fine but uh Justin Thomas is that like you you were saying it's difficult to just see the president Scott and not seeing him you know I can understand Jordan because of the he did E his way into the top 30 for the Tour Championship he did and he's been playing well lately uh yes he did have that stinker last year on the Ryder Cup but still he's like I consider him like the Sergio Garcia you gotta have that type of a presence in there um I mean like it's who would you have left off to put Justin on there that's the difficult thing playing right but because if I would have left somebody out it would have been somebody that is high on the on the on the list right now and that would have been Tony F now it would have been really You' left F now off yes for Justin Thomas yes I think the others are really Justified for it uh like Russell Henley has been playing really really well Keegan well he he has he's the one that has been doing great lately so definitely and Ryder cop Captain he's making this big deal about playing and even Jim furck said I knew he was going to make uh he was going to make it at the end of the day when he was named the Ryder Cup captain he's like renewed right now Brian Harman Haron and Max hmer has been great players the past couple of years so definitely I would have just taken out uh Tony Fina but of course they were not going to do that so that's why I think Justin Thomas is out at this time so Mike we is a captain of the uh international team of course it's being held in Canada and of course Mike is a revered Canadian because of his master's win in his great career on the PJ tour um and so there were no Canadians that qualified on points so the top six for the international team were hii matama sunj M Adam Scott who's been playing outstanding over the last couple months Tom Kim who you know played what do you go bogey double or bogey bogey to shoot himself out of the Tour Championship um but he's had a really good year uh Jason day and Benny an I haven't heard much of Benny on but he's obviously playing well good enough to get in there then Mike picked Christian bazen Hood Cory Connors McKenzie ues SE will Kim minw Le and Taylor pendrith oh by the way Carlos I didn't know if you knew this or not but both pendrith and Cory Connors went to school at Kent State in Ohio by the way I didn't know if you knew that or not but uh you know I just have to bring that up so uh he got his he got his Canadian guys in there yeah of course I I didn't know he got his Canadian guys in there and he got he got him yeah he did and I you know as I look at this I see some some things that could possibly work um you know bazen ho is not going to maybe be great for or fourball but he should be a really really good alternate shot player um forsome player uh tremendous putter uh his backstory is outstanding almost dying from rat poison when he was a kid and you know still having issues digestive issues and things with his with his stomach and uh but it it there there's some players here that can play a little bit McKenzie 's you know one of the best Potters on the tour um so minw minwu Lee long driver very Taylor pendri very long Cory Connor great iron player so if these guys can come out and play at 90% of their best I see the international team being a good competition for the American team who maybe has doesn't have a couple of the guys on there because you're livv or someplace else like Justin Thomas who didn't make the team you know you got some new guys in there Carlos that may fold under the pressure on the United States team I think so and and we go back to the last time when Ernie Els had that team that nobody expected to to do anything and they really came out live and one of the things that we can expect here is the Canadian guys are going to play with the the home crowd here so he not only picked them up because they were Canadians but definitely good Canadian players are going to be playing here at home so one of the things that they have going I I think one of the things that is important always in these team competitions is Chemistry Between The Players I don't see that kind of great camaraderie on the US US team yes they know each other but I don't even though if you try to pair him because this player May compliment this other one I don't see them having that kind of like Jordan SP and Justin Thomas and the other pairings that we've had in the past before yes they're great individual players but can they actually and the experience here in the president Cup in this type of competition is not that big so when you come to think about it those players like Hideki is playing Amazing sunj IM is a great player Adam Scott is playing out of his world right now Tom King Tom Kim has been playing immensely great Jason day is the experience here and he on and off but this is the type of competition that he likes and I know for a fact Ming W Le I think is gonna be the Dark Horse from the international uh Team he has that type of play and mind mentality to come here and play well so yeah if uh the us is going to overlook the Internationals they're in for it I mean they're in their home uh course and uh this players have nothing to lose just like that other team from Ernie Els and I think it's going to be closer than what people think from the US side you still got kley and shafley will probably play together they always do um one of the things that intrigues me too is you've got good buddies Sam Burns and Scotty Sheffer who like to play together they're from you know they're down there in Dallas they play together all the time but we saw that the Ryder Cup that was disastrous they were terrible together and Sam Burns is so up and down you know Scotty's very even Keel and Sam could be really really good or he could be really really bad uh there doesn't seem to be a lot of in between with him so that's going to be curious to watch as well and now so one more question for you Carlos before we leave this so we talked about on the US Team livv guys Bryson G chambo Dustin Johnson Brook CIA they're not around they're not available also for the international team they can't get walking nean or Cam Smith or Louie us tyen who do you think is hurt more by players that left for the livv the international team or the United States team considering how the the the chambo DJ's really playing so bad right now that I don't think he'll make a difference if he would have been available for it Brooks has been on and off he hasn't really been the same player anymore I think Bryson would be the only player that you would say wow that's the one that I would have liked and and this is coming from me that you know that I always say Bryson is not a team player but this Bryson dambo 2.0 seems like he would be really good for this type of competition I think the ones really hurting are the Internationals because those three players specifically are three stalwarts of the president cup and H Neiman Cameron Smith and Louis us heising so definitely they could have used that help more than really the Americans could have used any of the others car thanks for taking a few minutes talk to us about uh the upcoming president cup here at the end of the month I want to just mention real briefly too that while we're talking about this the Curtis cup wrapped up last weekend which is a meeting of a team from young women amateurs from Great Britain and Ireland against a team of young women uh from amateurs from the United States and uh Great Britain and Ireland just won this thing uh which it's unusual the the United States wins almost every time in the Curtis cup uh but they really played well I watched the singles on Sunday was really exciting very well done uh really enjoyed it and also coming up at the solheim cup next week uh the week of like uh September the 14th along in there um so that's going to be exciting it'll be in Virginia right outside of uh Washington DC at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club uh we've seen a president Club held there and some other tournaments over the years so really good track uh and those teams are picked and ready to go uh Carlos a lot of great golf still going on even though the PJ tour season is W is wound down we've got the LPGA to finish up we've got the solheim we got the President's Cup uh we got the world tour DP World Tour to finish out their season we got college golf starting up I got two really good college uh golf uh tournaments here in Michigan this next week so I'm going to go to one them down at American Dunes uh and uh looking forward to that so uh again definitely those team competitions are going to be great I can't wait to see the solheim cop is going to be a great great tournament and uh that if they repeat that 1414 again it could be again an amazing show definitely the Sol I'm cup the Europeans won the last three in a row and five out of the last seven uh the United States has been taking it in the year really bad on these assaulting cups they need a win big time Stacy Lewis needs to get her girls going they I think they they're the slight favorites but again that has always been the case and look how the Euros come back and win them
