Oxford may ban evening outdoor activities due to EEE

Right now, a community that's at a critical risk level for EEE is considering taking drastic action because of it. So officials in Oxford are looking at joining neighboring communities in implementing a controversial solution. So let's go to NBC. Ten S Alysha Palumbo, she's in Oxford to explain the fall youth sports season. Is about to kick off, but parents and coaches of the Oxford Webster Youth Football and Cheer program are getting fired up that their kids might not be able to take the field. My son would be absolutely crushed. I think it's absolutely ludicrous following the Bay state's first confirmed human case of EEE in four years in central Mass last week, Oxford, Webster and several surrounding towns are at critical or high risk, and now multiple communities are beginning to impose a curfew of sorts to limit exposure to infected mosquitoes when they're most active. From dusk until dawn. EEE is really serious, and it's in our area. It's in our region. We really need to be mindful. Tonight Oxford's director of public health is going to recommend that the Board of Health orders no outdoor activities after 6 p.m. through the end of September and after 5 p.m. in October, until the first hard frost. This basically shuts our season down from day one. We can't afford to find another place to play. Neighboring towns are already closing. We just don't have the options to go elsewhere. And as the president of the youth football program in town, Bobby Poirier knows they can't practice any earlier than they already do. Cannot start earlier. Our parents already struggle with the 530 time frame. Parents say while they take the risks seriously, they think they should be able to decide whether their children practice outside. Three years ago, we shut down the whole world. You know, we already affected these children's lives in that aspect, and now we're going to shut down sports for them as well, too.
