[Music] hello Baseball fans and welcome inter league baseball on MLB The Show it's the Detroit Tigers and the San Diego Padres and we'll be back with the first pitch right after this [Applause] so just about set now today's starting pitcher Joe musgrow Chris what should we keep an eye on here with him well it hasn't been a great year so far in terms of ER but he's had some decent games and there have been some flashes of greatness if you will we'll see today if he's able to get ahead of hitters and perhaps get some swings and misses put himself in a position to bring that ra down because you know in the back of his mind Beyond The W he wants to have a better earned run average rolled softly but that goes foul the o1 is outside and it's a ball and a strike base hit that was smoked through the infield so a runner aboard to start the in [Applause] here's Riley [Applause] green that immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed [Applause] hitter a one down ball that's inside I think it's very important to establish the inside part of the plate early sets the tone for the rest of the game and the right-hander deals swing in a miss and it's one and two and he really sells the change up with that arm action nobody out run it first swing and a miss for the strike down chase the fast up the ladder for strike three he's locked in at the plate when he's using the whole field he was out in front there just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track good pitch for the strike [Applause] out and next to hit for Detroit Matt verling musgrow checks on first [Applause] and there's a foul [Applause] ball and the pitch fouled off left side this is one of those situations the infielders have to pre-plan and understand that the ball's got to be hit extremely hard right at them if they're going to have a chance to go for a double play and the pitch bouns it back with two [Applause] strikes the kick and the pitch Runner goes C on and miss a second out there and the inning is over trying to make something happen there on offense but that's the risk you run awesome strike him out throw him out double play to end the [Applause] inning back here at Petco Park and towing the slab in this one Casey M and Chris he's a guy that gets better when things get tough yeah he's definitely had a struggle so far this year as evidenced by that inflated whip but he's going to have to find a way to limit the base runners put his team in a position to win a ball game so we know he's prepared we know this guy is a competitor and we'll watch how he works in this one jerks and profar in the box now no balls in a [Applause] strike out to short Sweeney throws the first in time and a quick out number one as we take a look at the Padre's lineup and one guy who's been great for them jerks and proar and boo he leads the team in on base percentage and runs scored I mean those two things are pretty much connected because obviously you can't score without getting on base this is a guy who really acts as a catalyst for this lineup he swings and fouls one off one down Bas is empty foul ball goes down looking well just excellent location on that inside fast ball really locked him off and it's a hitter it's not typically what you're looking for you're trying to protect away and then in so he can be a little bit tardy with two strikes hard to tell if he was fooled or if he thought it' be called the ball but either way that's a really nice [Applause] pitch that's in there all right now he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the umpire's calls but at this point he's going to have to bear down and be ready to hit anything close to the zone and there's a ball that pitch just misses the inside corner two balls two strikes two [Applause] outs still two and two after the foul [Applause] ball the wind of the pitch and it skips in dir two out bace is empty swing and a miss struck him out Padre's go down one two three nothing doing there for the friar scoreless after [Music] one back here in San Diego top of the second now here's the Tigers cleanup hitter carry Carpenter all around I think if you asked any anyone in this organization who's the best hitter in the lineup they would say him musgrow back to work fast ball for a strike next off bring is in for a strike I understand you want to try to gauge that guy's fast but you also have to be aggressive and ready to hit in your zone now you're in a tough spot and that's in the dirt and that one moves his feet he might have to look for a different putaway pitch right here two two he's already seen the curveball couple of times in this at bat so might have it timed up and ready for it keeps the going with a foul ball and the pitch just outside and it's three and two really good take especially with two [Applause] strikes out there to Center Bogarts sizing this one up no trouble here puts it away for the out and there's one down that's a really nice play ranging back into the outfield for that catch we all know those can be a little tricky especially if the wind around out there and up next for Detroit Jace Young F off foul one down base is empty comes up empty as he chases that one in the dirt quickly in an 02 count you've got to figure out a way to shorten your path to the baseball put it in play somewhere then you got a chance gets a piece and it stays 0 and two you can see he was trying to stay back long enough to handle the off speed pitch but just a little Tardy on the fast ball no score here in the second fights that one away and the count remains o and two a wi in the pitch foul ball it stays nothing in two [Applause] gets a piece and stays alive and the righty deals and now one and two swing and a miss struck him out not a great curveball there at all but clearly he wasn't looking for it because it just dropped right into the happy Zone and it looked like to me the swing was a little bit late tells me he gave up on it early and then just tried to have that emergency hack at the last second to put it in play Spencer torlon in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike swinging a foul straight [Applause] back in the air foul off first makes the grab and that's the inning nothing doing here this half now to the bottom of the second we're tied nothing nothing and we're back Machado up to the play Third you know Petco Park seems to be transforming into machado's Castle nobody's hit more home runs in this Ballpark and Machado passed Adrien Gonzalez for the top spot on the list in 2023 and that one missing low one and next offering is in for a strike Eric summersgill our PL umpire one thing to watch out for boo is what side of the plate Summers Gill might be favorite he usually sets up at an angle pitchers sometimes will try to figure that out early so they can attack that spot and get as many strike calls as possible what about an umpire's height how much of a role does that play in your experience and what the strike zone is like yeah I think it pushes the strike zone up a little bit which you know as a former hitter you like that you wanted the ball up you didn't want have to deal with stuff down in his Zone consistently it's sander Bogarts now as the game has moved along we see more and more information supplied by teams about the umpires I've been in clubhouses where they have pictures of all four guys nicknames hometowns and as well Hobbies listed just so you can kind of small talk the Umpire a little bit that's great kicks and fires and right back to the mound Bogart's retired off speed pitch and it looked like he just continued his momentum toward after releasing that perfect position to make a play and help himself out Jackson Merill the next to hit good power not great in the OBP Department [Applause] that misses the Zone ball one this lineup's going to have to find a way to make him work a little harder out there on the mound I mean he is just mowing him down he's settling in you got to make him uncomfortable maybe step out of the box call timeout do whatever it takes that one [Applause] missed a little out H there as he swings through [Applause] it and a swing and a miss and that's that three up three down for San Diego will move to the third with no score and welcome back to the ball now it's the DH Zack mckin catch number4 Jak so digging in Jake Rogers and Chris his big strength is defense but it is interesting in today's world of baseball compared to when you played a good defensive catcher is considered differently whatever you get offensively is a bonus but he's got to put the fingers down he's got to present pitches to the Umpire they're going to help his pitcher get more strikes swing and a line drive curling foul down the right side I think the other component is putting down the finger that the pitcher wants to throw and being on the same page and that's something that this guy does really Machado toss the second and that's two one hit in the inning but nothing more than that we head now to the home half of inning number three no score ready to go for the last half of the inning and now it's going to be David [Applause] Peralta as he turns on the rubbert with that good live arm delivers Bo his preparation is off the charts I was down in the clubhouse today trying to find him just to pick his brain a little bit he's so buried in that video room it's hard to get a chance to talk to him [Applause] next pitch misses two balls in a strike and another ball the 3-1 31 and he couldn't come up with it leading up for the p Luis cusano the next up for the [Applause] padr swing and a taper that rolls foul [Music] [Applause] the [Applause] pitch the two strikes may see some movement over there first base trying to stay out of the double play right here and he and a curve misses outside well that's kind of what you expect in an 02 count excellent job of the hitter to have the plate disciplined to lay off of that pitch broken back ground ball to Second good feed that's one over to First [Applause] here's the short stop at the play Mason McCoy swinging a foul back that's out of play McCoy in his rookie season 29 years old he joined the team as a free agent and the1 one in [Applause] one swinging a Miss as he was late one ball two [Applause] [Music] St ground ball left that's some base hit into center field and they strike first as they take a one nothing lead well there you go the RBI machine another clutch run scoring it back yeah he's been so good in these situations call it clutch if you want but his resume speaks for itself here's Donovan Solano he's been a great free agent [Applause] side check swing on the first pitch a peel down to first didn't go Runners are at the corners one [Applause] away and that one sliced foul with a runner at third this is who they wanted to play he's so good at getting a run across in these situations two on one out spear to the mound Runner might be in trouble quickly to Second for one over to first that's two nicely done 163 and that will end the inning but they pick up one run on the RBI single it's now nothing ball game you're watching Major League Baseball on the show out of the fourth and stepping in is the Speedy Parker Meadows up and in on and over well these Tigers just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game so many of their outs have come from weak contact on pitches they're chasing outside of the strike zone you can't do much of anything with those locations and that's been true again today and here it comes ground ball up the middle that's a base hit so a man on base to start the inning that's back to back singles for him really nice job staying up the Middle with his OPP try to do too much with the pitch just shot it through the infield and now let's see if they force some action with good Wheels on the bases and next up for the Tigers Riley green 0 for one he struck out swinging last time first offering misses badly for ball one and as a pitcher when the hitters are swinging at everything you feel no need to challenge inside the zone you just keep working the corners and expanding that Strike Zone and Beyond and they just keep eating right out of your hand close but call the ball and now two and0 the pitch and a good eye there well here's a good opportunity in this inning to get on the scoreboard after that lead off hit the order coming up right behind them this is where they need to get going and he deals pitches in there three balls and a [Applause] strike right through there for a strike and boy that was the pit 31 you want to be really aggressive on the fast at the belt and Fs that one is absolutely belted and in one hops the wall Runner around third he scores to tie it up it's one1 gets it done to drive in the run and tie it back up he tried to jam him inside with the cutter and he got it in there but I a feeling he was sitting on that pitch that location because he was all over Runner and scor position no outs Matt verling up now for the Tigers that one well upstairs and it's one to0 runner in scoring position nobody out top half of inning number four foul ball there righty delivers edge of the zone for a strike and the count is one and two puts it in the air out towards left Center merrow under it and it's caught for the [Applause] out and here is carry Carpenter he's over and that curveball drops in there for a strike they must have been looking for something else cuz he gave up on that pitch a little early it was right down Main Street probably not going to see a better pitch to hit in this in back and now the count is [Applause] even grab ball up the middle throw over to cronenworth and that's an out not a bad outcome in that spot the runner moves up to Third and now they have a chance to drive in the goahead run it's not a knock but at the end of the day it's a good at B and next to hit for Detroit Jace Young And there's the strike oh one's the count [Applause] two outs with a runner of [Applause] third that one down the line jump throw across his body and very nicely done for the out Tigers grab one on this RBI double all even now at 1-1 back here at p park bottom four stepping in for San Diego Jake Cronin worth Cronin the rander back to work fast for a strike you know these Padres as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the plate they're chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone and those chases that are turning into a bunch of outs can they turn turn that around and stay within the Zone we'll see but I think they have to this one smoked out to left that takes care of prent work and there's one down not F at all right there he was clearly all over it but sometimes you hit it too hard and right at some looking for one of those Loop hits to get a knock [Music] sometimes B one [Applause] that one ripped but foul one out base is [Applause] empty bounc to the right side sends it to First already two gone here in the two second B [Applause] and here is Xander Bogarts 0 for one he grounded out and his first it [Applause] back that's through there for a strike all tied up we're here in the bottom of the fourth that one hammered left field that's back and out of here it's his eighth home run of the year and just like that they're out fromont it's 2-1 he absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer and you can see that's what he expects of himself at bat after a bat he's that confident that was one of those home runs where you really don't know if he got enough of it off the bat I mean he put a good swing on it clearly but I wouldn't say he really got The Sweet Spot on the bat the exit VW wasn't anything to impressive but it had all it needed for him to circle the pillows here's the kid Jackson Merill his first major league hit happened in Korea during the soul series with the Padres nearly 7,000 miles away from his hometown of Baltimore he had to travel across the world for his first career hit but I think that makes it even more special boo what a cool moment that was for him two down down nobody on that one to First Tolson and the inning is over one in the inning and it comes from a rather unlikely power source and this is now a 2-1 ball game it's Major League Baseball on the show we go to the top of the fifth now at the plate Spencer tolon you know the first manager to ever win a game here at Petco Park was Tony Gwyn yes Tony Gwyn they had a college baseball tournament here in March 2004 and Tony managed San Diego State to a win the pitch swings through the fast B up in the zone swing and a miss struck him out chase the fast up the ladder for strike three thought it was a pretty good pitch top of the strike zone we're seeing more fast balls in that location hitters especially with two strikes have to be ready to pull the trigger and next is the designated hitter Zack mckinstry and that one just missed off the outside edge he's been going after these guys consistently and as a result he's been able to keep his pitch count low throwing the ball very well well right [Applause] now that one close rule the ball and the count is two and0 he swings and hits a Fly ball center field Merill makes the play two [Applause] down now batter and the batter will be the short stop Trey Sweeny flyed to left his first time and that's off the Inside Edge ball one the Tigers trailing by a run and we're at the top of the fif next offering is in for a [Applause] strike big swing and a miss one ball two strik [Applause] [Music] this one lifted in the air left field profar settles under it makes the grab back here in San Diego and now David [Applause] Peralta here the right hter back to work that misses and that's ball [Applause] one pretty good pitch to take a pass at and a one count just not able to square it up and another ball two ball one stri up the middle Finds Its way through base hit well patience and discipline paid off right there as he got into an advantage count just kept it simple played Pepper with the middle of the infield and took it back where it came from and there's just no one there to knock it down [Applause] so up next Luis cusano he's over for one and that one just misses a ball and no [Applause] strikes out to Center Green on the Run long run tracks it down and there's one away up next that's short and the batter now Mason McCoy reached on an infield single this first time [Applause] right through there for a strike Peralta leads off first with one [Applause] away pass ball for a strike and it's own two don't play situation here he's been working up in the zone typically you look for guys to get that ground ball see if he adjusts on this next pitch and the righty deals face hit just kind of sliced that one into Center they get it in quickly so first and second now one out I don't think that pitch would have been called a strike but such a nice job of pulling his hands tight to the body and just getting enough of the barrel on it to be hard enough back up the middle for a knock so the San Diego batting order turns over now batting jerks in profar [Applause] just [Applause] missed Runners at first and second with one gone last half of inning number five the next pitch misses two and0 tough spot right here couple Runners on two ball count you can't nibble but you have to execute and finish your pitch if you leave something out over the plate it's going to bring some runs next offering is in for a [Applause] strike lays out oh it's off his clove gets it there in time though and that leaves them with Runners at second and third just a great effort all the way around at third base right there nice job to get a blove on it with the dive but it was a recovery that was so impressive doesn't hop to his feet and get the throw off in such a fluid motion over there I kind of doubt he gets the out Donovan Solano digs in now and takes low from ball one two on two outs that one misses and it's two and0 he's got a base open so the pressure to come in and really attack this hitter not as great as it would be if the bags were sacked and fouled off the 2-1 that one is upstairs I almost feel like he's frustrated a little bit he wants to be challenged Jak up next second and third two down and now a full Skippers seeing the offense just sputter not able to get anything going here comes a pitch lifted in the air now the left side could be extra faces now he turns and heads for second the throw in safe at second two hits for him in this one both for extra bases got to feel good about that I'm amazed at his ability to pull his hands inside and actually square that baseball off that pitch was off the plate so tough to get the barrel to anything in there now a pretty big advat coming up with a chance to even this ball game up Matt verling now at the plate first pitch misses man on second two down little Chopper rolls foul rander kicks deals swinging a foul over the screen and back out of play [Applause] and it's second that ball is foul and the pressure is building well he knows they don't want to give him anything to hit but when you've got opportunities to drive in runs you've got to a swing and a miss that retires the side and that'll do it he's in a tough spot had to make a great pitch did it got the strike out gets out of the jam clearly he's happy with those results and welcome back to the ballpark now here's Jake cronenworth M back to work here's a strike double barreled base hit so a man aboard now with one away [Applause] pretty much a model swing on that one as he ripped it into the opposite field Gap and I'm sure he's going to be watching that one back on video because that's the kind of Swing you want to bottle so many positives that led to that knock and here comes sander Bogarts he went deep back in the fourth a pretty important swing in the bat in this ball game yeah Bo he didn't waste any time he jumped all over that pitch and saw it the entire way you talk about squaring it up he didn't miss a stitch on the baseball there's a strike Barts measures 6' 2 in 220 lb and he was born in a Ruba that breaking ball is in for a strike and quickly it is nothing in [Applause] two ball one to Bogarts [Applause] would chase that time and now the count is full and another power hitter lurking in the on Deck Circle and the rander deals lined in left Center base hit they fired in quickly so it's first and second with only one away two consecutive base hits for these guys here moop that one in there for the knock definitely got that pitch on the outside of the cap a little bit but he made it work for it here comes the skipper and we're going to see a pitching change in this spot Casey m is done and as he heads for The Dugout we'll take a quick break new arm on the mound when we get back so the Tigers get a new arm from the pen Tyler hold and they felt it was time to bring on a left-handed reliever from the pin with the Lefty hitter coming up I think it's a good move I know I never liked when opposing teams did that to me so first and second with one gone so digging in now for San Diego Jackson Merill just [Applause] [Applause] missed two on one out and count one and [Applause] two left hand batter weights stays [Music] alive knocks that one away and we do it [Applause] again next offering is is down low well this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the Abad I'm sure there times where pitch would rather just give up a first pitch single than have to waste six or seven pitches on one hitter and now it's filled up David Peralta on deck for the Padres they try to get him to go chase the pitch down and away but he wouldn't bite outside and that is Ball Four that's a great atat he saw a lot of pitches and earned a walk well that sets up a really big atat in this game these are the moments where everyone in the stadium gets really locked in so Bas is loaded with one away David Peralta at the pl there's the strike tough situation right here so important as a pitcher to get ahead in the count as he did right there leftand hitter Waits here's a highfly ball out to Center brings it in run tags for home cut off now a throw home not in time he's safe and a run comes in to score sometimes all you got to do is your job and don't over complicate things keep it simple Runner third less than two outs put the ball in play and a nice job with the sack next it's the catcher for the Padre's Luis cusano got it started a little too early strike one [Applause] strike chases that one out of the Zone good job at damage control right there there one run in the inning but they leave two we're through six full it's the Padre's three and the Tigers [Applause] one we go to the top of the seven now here's the Tigers cleanup hitter carry Carpenter the wine of the pitch and that's off the Inside Edge ball one activity in the bullpen for San Diego Jeremiah Estrada a right-hander with big strikeout stuff is getting it fired up the Lefty warming up as well outside ball [Applause] two fast ball for a strike it really looks like these hitters have been in between with their timing today good fast excellent slider but they've not been able to commit to one velocity and stay there and a swing and a miss picks up strike out number seven a big first down here in the seventh VI of the punch out yeah it just does so much to change the out of an important in like this you get the lead off hitter so critical in setting the table when you got a tight game like this so a strike out really puts him on their heels swings and pulls it foul to the right side one down base is empty a good slider from an opposite-handed pitcher has to stay in that tunnel just a little bit longer otherwise recognition can cause you to Barrel it up and right cly could do anything Prof makes the grab two away and up next for Detroit Spencer [Applause] Tolsen out in front with the swing and that is strike one I really like how he's been attacking hits early in at bats he's thrown strikes on the first pitch to over 70% of the guys he's faced next offering upstairs well it's been a very impressive outing so far his command has been a big part of it even when he misses he misses outside the strike zone which is exactly what a pitcher wants inside and hit you know boo you always say how important is to have a good feel for the game I I say after the game you step into the box I'll throw some fast Falls at you no actually I think we're good Chris and that skips in dir B one no [Applause] stri they get the force third out and that ends the frame one left for Detroit and it remains a 3-1 ball game [Applause] we're back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh Shelby Miller and we all know about a slider it's just filthy man and one of the better ones in the game I'd say spin rate's very high and it just breaks a ton and now the short stop Mason McCoy the short stop M the pitch and first off ring is fouled off kicks andand deal and it's fouled away the 02 that's foul off to the right side keeps the ab going the pitch inside B one slider misses outside [Applause] the two two and they'll do it again kicks and fires gets a piece there we'll do it again and here comes hard ground ball base KN he forced a lot of pitches to be thrown and ends up collecting a hit nice and bad right there not just the result but also seen a lot of pitches made him really work out there the M he wasn't able to elevate it but he put a great swing on it right on time good balanced approach and just blasted it through the infield here's the switch inting left fielder jerx in profar profar gets a piece there McCoy gets his lead at first nobody out and a foul [Applause] ball right-handed reliever [Applause] one and the one two misses to even the count still just the second batter of the inning and on the mount he's already thrown 13 pitches they got him working hard out there and the pitch keeps the back going with a foul ball runner at first with no outs [Applause] here got him looking for the strike out fast ball at the letters froze him for strike three so here's the Padre's DH Donovan solo 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out runner on the goal pitch in for a strike pretty close play on that one perfect throw probably gets him that throw was just a little wide to the third base side of the B so he had to reach a little bit to get it could have been just enough to make the difference there [Applause] and the pitch swinging a miss that strike two [Applause] two ouch he had two strikes on him and he hit him seem a little bit focus on executing that pitch right there not staying through the Target and clearly not the release point he [Applause] wanted cranworth stands in here tried to hold back his swing there but went around the Padres trying to break this one open here the bottom of the seven [Applause] ground ball right side could be two the flip to Second not in time at first it's a fielder's Choice well that's great hustle out of the box to get down the line knowing that a double play will end the inning good job at the Finish reaching out for the bag now they have Runners on the corners and still an opportunity to pick up some runs here's Manny Machado now breaking ball in there for a strike [Applause] and a pitch and that's downed away I got one ball one [Applause] stke that misses two and one it's a big opportunity right here but I love the way he's slowing the game down he's shrinking his Zone making sure he gets the pitch that he wants to [Applause] hit two two that misses off the outside edge Xander Bogart would be next if they can extend the inning and he's homered already so I'm sure he'd love a chance to do some more damage [Applause] here two outs fights it off he see another at the belt fights swing and a miss struck him out slider got him for strike three so it's no runs on a hit no errors and two are left eighth inning coming up it's the Padres three and the Tigers one welcome back and a new arm on the m to start Jeremiah Estrada these are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves late and close there's not much margin for error but at the same time there's a reason they're put in these situations and a pitch Sweeny up to hit for the third time as he lays off inside ball [Applause] one hard hit right side Bogart's with the throw to first lead off man is out here in the eighth couple of pitches and a quick out Rogers Jake Rogers up now for the [Music] Tigers swing and a miss strike one well in this one the offense has sputtered somebody's got to find find a way to get on keep the line moving and manufacture at least one run then maybe you get two or three the pitch and a foul [Applause] ball swing and a miss at the splitter and it's a strike out if you can set up a good two strike splitter with fast the pitch it's going to be so tough to recognize that gesture swing to get a piece of it clearly had him reaching for it
