play at the level he has to be noticed again to be playing as well as he did the under 21 to him I know that's obviously the link with Lee car knowing him but the level of his performance has got him connections in the in in the Irish part of this equation to talk about um the match on Friday and I um I said I didn't think it would be much of a game for England because this the gulf between the two teams despite the fact that amazingly they had managed to draw draw six of the previous seven Internationals between the two countries I think the gulf is enormous at the moment so it's one of those no win situations Danny for England um so we have to look at the performance I guess any differences you noticed from the way Gareth Southgate put his team out indeed um I thought he did the simple things really well Lee carsley I'll tell you what they are if we don't need to repeat it but I think no Trent playing in his normal position fullback drifting into Midfield and spraying the passes like we see him do for Liverpool a left footer at left back very obvious but again probably the majority of the country was thinking that we needed that in the euros and we didn't take one for some bizarre reason the freedom I thought he gave rice and Mayu to decide when and if they go forward and not one of them it was either all rice bursting past Kane on many occasion Mayu on the edge of the Box on numerous occasions the freedom to actually make choices when that should be done and shouldn't be done um pace in the wide areas which is exactly what you need if you're going to play Harry Kane so I thought the simple things and the things that the majority of people wanted he did and what that did is it created a well if you look at it I think the numbers were something like 70 70 over 70% possession more shots on goal more touches in the opposition box and bigger expected goals than any of the seven games in the Euros now the counterarguments of that would be higher pressure the games in the Euros are against better opposition but I wouldn't say Slovakia and Slovenia are that much different than Republic of Ireland so I think there was lots to be pleased about I like Jack in the 10 I thought he was good I thought it was a good idea to play him in there because obviously hasn't got the pace to play wide I just I just liked a lot about it the only thing I would say Dan and I don't know what you think about this or I spoke about Darren briefly over a burger um big fat burger as well um was when Ireland did get a little spell in the game make the subs make the changes freshen it come on now now now because yeah that was that was really interesting to say Danny because um you're right England had so much control when they lost the control slightly but not complacently that's not that's not the right word but they were cruising put it that way and when you have the opportunity in International Football um you could yeah they could have changed some of the not the legs but even the mindes in there getting some players who are really making their debuts people like Gibbs white and Angel Gomez who we discussed before get them on let's some let them you know they'll be so intensely involved in the game that you won't get that kind of falling off of the performance that happened in the second half but overall Darren um I particularly like the idea that you can play greish and Gordon um that was a real threat and uh Jack was so good at at the 10 that Phil foden will be thinking okay there there's that no he won't he's a great football and I'm sure he's got lots of confidence but he' be thinking I I that is not an absolute given now that shirt look at that performance there well it's more Bellingham isn't I think Bellingham will still be quite comfortable but I know what you mean there's now three of them and Palmer four of them absolutely and that's Belling you could always you could always drop back yeah that was partly why I was having a little chuckle to myself because again it's a lovely problem to have it's not a bad thing at all um they've got different ways of playing all of them they give us the you know I often hear about people uh people saying pick X or Y because they offer something different well all of those guys offer something different from the other and they're all high class performers so that's not a problem for the country it's good competition for all of those players I love the fact that we saw Aston Villa Jack greish at the weekend who just played with a smile on his face with the joy of the game uh Danny was he's absolutely right schooling me over a very big tasty burger um Aston Villa ason vill Jack when he was oh I see what you mean sorry yeah yeah thought you'd forgotten the last four years no because I was about to say you were you were schooling me about the fact that what greish does now is what pep wants of him and given that he's an integral part of a team that won the treble last season who are we to doubt that but the there is a differ side of Jack which is just getting the ball and gambling through um defenses with a smile on his face and doing the kind of thing that earned him to move to Manchester City in the first place and the question there is you know on on this is no disrespect to malumu and and small bone I I identify the center of Ireland's Midfield as the as the weakness and of course Jack he was they were you know he and rice were wandering off them um at ease which one so the test for Jack if he's going to play in that position will always come against better opposition where people will um either mark him differently or he'll be stared with of the kind of perfect little ball that he was getting set set up with the whole time um Dan I ask you very quickly can I ask you something are you a are you as I've got older I've kind of moved towards just wanting to be happy about good performances rather than it's only Republic of Ireland it's only I don't know whatever particularly because us as a nation we've come up against lower caliber teams before and struggled and and stunk the place out and I don't know if we are yet at the stage where we can actually be saying it's only such and such or such and such until we reel off a really good consistent Runner performances that are really impressive is that fair I'm I'm not sure what your question is um everything you said is actually yeah it was order in the court order in the cour please ask the question it was just that was you dressed up as a question the one really got bar suit on so yeah well as I say I always used to laugh at him because he's beautifully turned out and I'm something of a ragam muffin um he I was always saying Darren always looks like he just come from his brother's wedding doesn't it it's a brilliant it's a brilliant look um Trent Alexander Arnold is always going to be a talking point Danny but um what I thought was interesting the talking point here was he was just let play his natural game you're not going to turn him into I don't know um Maldini overnight he's not that kind of footballer but the game has changed since then as well and I thought he he showed that he can be the right back but also an extra Midfield of the that's the part we can never question and I think it looked to me like just said to him go out there and play the game you know you can play and boy did he benefit from it yeah I I think he looked very comfortable very confident um that comes from the freedom that the manager gave him I think the the hybrid role as it were starting at fullback and going into Midfield is exactly what he's doing at Liverpool so that's great um and I think also the majority of England games apart from probably what 10 maybe 15% over a period of two two years are always against teams where we dominate the ball yeah so you know KY Walker is not going to last forever so Trent is going to be playing more as the as the next year or two I think he'll play more so all he's got to do is make sure when we come up against a team who've got flying Wingers and have more of the ball that he's he's on it defensively and I actually think the first couple of games I've seen him play for Liverpool he looks as sharp and as fit and as agile defensively as I've seen him in a long time he's had a couple of real one-on-one situations where he's looked really mobile and able to turn quick and not found himself getting caught which is really promising so we'll have to wait and see um on that one down but yeah playing him in the role Republic of Ireland so I was a bit surprised and I'll go further than that later to wake up to headlines saying literally on National newspapers in England saying that he should be sacked if he does not sing God save the king um before the game yours was not one of those papers Darren I noted um I'm sure you had a discussion about it because uh you know the way social media works now everything is blown up into a huge issue I was what did what well your paper didn't do it what did you make of the Ferrari um well I I just I'm staggered by it I have to say um is it interesting yes is it as big a story as it has become not for me um and that's the reason why we took the decision not to put it anywhere other than where it should have been which was in the sports Pages um now I can't speak for other people's decision making at all um but I I just the whole issue around his singing or non- singing of the anthem was never an issue when he took charge of many of the players who he's elevated into the senior team now on the way to winning the European championship and as you know you keep referring to me in as my full title there are so many other things affecting everybody at the moment regardless of what team country what Your Allegiance is there so many other things affecting us rather than this and I just didn't see it as being anywhere near as important as some people have made it and I look people are talking about patriotism and this that and the other but those people how come they didn't know if they are that patriotic that he hadn't been singing it as England under 21 coach on the way to winning the title The because you're getting to to n the matter in some ways it wasn't about football and Sport at all it was about politics um and culture wars and getting um hits for your newspaper and or uh Twitter feed Dan were you surprised or do you think they manag such thing the uh the the national anthem well I'll come at it from a players's point of view I um I couldn't care less what my manager does and I couldn't tell less what my mate does next to me it's just a personal thing I did sing it um I was proud to sing it but it didn't bother them if one of the other Lads didn't I I think there's so many different ways that people Express themselves whether it be a manager a player look if you think of the Euros I've I've been at so many tournaments in the last yeah 10 12 years the Euro has being the most recent one you will never see a rendition of an Anthem better sang by supporters staff and players than Scotland or Italy right and they were bloody awful so what what what what what does the and I mean awful so what does it mean means that you care no you can words are just words you show how you care with actions it's what I've been taught by all my previous exes um and so FL flowers from theary is not cutting it down no no especially not the F they false ones I think you prove your worth or your passion by what you produce in the role you're in and the role he's in is to give the player players the freedom belief and strength and courage to play the way they do and the first half they did so let's just judge him on what he does with the team and how he motivates the players and how he coaches them and how the team sets up not on whether he decides to belt out a rendition of God saved the king you know come on it's ridiculous the world's gone mad yeah it really saddened me because it looked to me from a distance of 300 miles to the West like in some cases this were people talking about a country that's lost its own self-confidence if that's the the the mark of how you become the England manager you can sing the national anthem it was very sad now look I understand the modern media I work in it I'm part of it I do understand it and I understand that in Twitter and um other short form um means of expression you have to just get out the the the sort of edge of what you're saying and so some it appeared pretty unne on oh he must be sacked the ones I really had it in for um were the writers in sort of newspaper are long form websites where they have the chance you know you can't write a thousand words about this issue if unless you mention the background of why there is issues between um you know one country and another these two islands um otherwise you're just being willfully ignorant because you know the answers um and you just you decide to ignore those in favor of gathering up a few more clicks or hits from people who already in your Echo chamber um I thought I I I didn't think it was a a great moment for the British press and of course it won't go away it'll keep on with it um until he's appointed and then we'll s then it'll come up timing and don't do particularly well I think I think Danny look from my point of view I I've got lots of different kinds of skin in the game you know because yeah you know I'm born in this country I'm of Caribbean Heritage um and and and identity is important it's important to millions of people in this country um and and to be honest with you in all my what 20 odd years being talking about a variety of subjects on talk sport you know me I like to be honest and open and I love the fact that there is a diverse range of opinions on on on a lot of subjects so I get it and you know when I'm with journalists we argue about lots of stuff all the time we don't always agree but we respect each other's right to an opinion and I love the fact that we all have different opinions rather than everybody thinking like a formation dance team I just think as far as this particular issue is concerned um I hope it doesn't go down the road of robbing us of a very promising manager who knows how to win and is promoting teams from the under 21 side into uh the senior team I hope it doesn't see us going the way of say for example um Terry veniales uh when in 96 he gave us some terrific moments as England manager and then he lost his job for something that had nothing to do with football there's no suggestion that the fa are going to get rid of him because he won't Sing the anthem surely to no there's not but you would have thought so and I on the morning of the game it was the lead story on one BBC News Bulletin that I watched and Sky were also getting stuck into it as well all off the back of a few people who are I'm going to be honest about this they're entitled to opinion of course that's what I genuinely believe um you know who who say these things um because that is the way you get certain kinds of G on certain kinds of radio and TV stations but D can we just give you real context quickly the fact is that Lee Carley as an Ireland player and I was born in Birmingham sure didn't Sing the anthem as an English manager under 21s winning a trophy did not Sing the anthem no one question it no one says anything no and and as an England first team manager he remained consistent with his belief and behavior and didn't sing it again now if he had sang it after not singing it for all that time what would we call that disingenuous yeah trying to appease the masses what is it is that lead is that leadership is that leadership is leadership having the Coury conviction and I know things change all the time I grew up in a world where it wasn't compulsory nobody said the England team didn't sing the national anthem 25 years ago I I'll go back and check the uh the footage but it's just become a thing to beat people with and one of these another sort of as I'm going to use the phrase again a culture War um sort of brick bat with which to Belt people around the the head if they don't happen to share your opinions on everything if you win if if you win football matches by how you sing the national anthem Scotland would be world champions and Wales would be European Champions absolutely right and both great singers actually great great anthems listen we'll talk extend this further actually though because I've anthem people are entitled to their opinions on both ways of that the wider question is does the next permanent manager whoever he or she is need to be good with the the media um it comes after Lee KY himself said that his strength is coaching on the pitch and not necessarily uh talking to the likes of myself and Darren and Dany um and of course it comes after we've had a no issue with this for years and years and years because Gareth Southgate was so measured and often very very good with the media well speaking of talk sport the interim manager himself was asked how he can handle that the media if he does get the job permanently I think it's definitely something that I can handle I think it's you know you know the England manager obviously got and head coach has got that responsibility you know I think where where my my opinion is is is most valued is is around football and and IC football and uh you know the English game and not all not not just the um the senior team but the pathway um you know the amount of time now that I've worked for for englanders you know I've seen four or five um different generations of of players now that are coming through in different age groups so you know that's that's my strength Darren I guess I need to ask you this question first because um it would be putting our heads in the sand to say it doesn't matter about the England manager um you know ability in front of the media because if it's bad that becomes the issue itself um Lee is clearly um you know he's a smart guy and he he but he doesn't automatically appear to be as comfortable with it as say Gareth Southgate was um what what these days is the relationship you know what do you want from the the manager when you're a newspaper editor it's a good question I mean there are a couple of things that points that Danny made to me privately that actually I don't want to steal his Thunder on so I I'll let him make those over Pizza it was a very tasty burger oh you haven't got another one since no okay right no we haven't but you know it was a very um real education over a very tasty burger but um in all seriousness I I'll just make this separate point because I thought this before Lee got the interim job I do think personally he should have the full-time job because essentially the game is about winning but I would say there's an interesting kind of point of difference between the two because Southgate was terrific off the pitch in relation to issues that were of national importance at a really important time for the nation Darren you you forgive me if I interrupt because Danny will want to know this there's been a goal in the game between England and Austria's under 21s which way is it gone Abrahams the goal has gone to England England won Austria nil after 25 minutes uh James mcy was siid down inside the penalty area and Morgan Rogers the astonvilla forward a little stuttering run up right footed smashed the ball into the roof of the net England one Austria nil it remains nil nil in the game between France and Belgium as I told you this game is very important to France now and the players have responded to the manager um because it does a great deal of needle in what they're not friendlies anymore and Mata gendi has just gone through the uh the the Belgian goalkeeper with with a fair amount of force shall I say no stronger than that the players have remarked to each other upon the tackle and the game moves on but there's been plenty of that so far um D Darren you're in the middle sorry of your Soliloquy yeah I was just making the point that as far as um Southgate is concerned he's raises a bar of what's expected of an England manager just because of the way that he was able to deal with so many difficult subjects which affected the nation the players from mental health to race to um George Floyd all of the different things that came up during his Reign he was outstanding he managed to bond a group of players that had been fractured a lot of players as Danny knows and so many of the people listening to the show know a lot of players didn't want to turn up for international Duty there were cleaks in the squad and he brought it together it's a real Club field to it so Southgate did a superb job away from the pitch lots of people have their own views about what happened on the pitch he was too safety first he didn't take fast enough decisions and difficult moments in the game so he wasn't a winner he got he took us to the brink but he wasn't a winner Carley's a winner and that's ultimately what you want from your National coach but I do think that he will need to have some of the things that Gareth had as well because Gareth was superb in front of the cameras the microphone and to be fair to Lee the fac Senior Team uh press team are superb at being able to judge the mood um judge the moment arm the England manager with the right things to say at the right times as well so he's surrounded by a terrific team but he will need to grow into that role if he's going to make a success of the job Dan I wonder what you think about it just I did I say I don't know Lee Carley I did a week of kickoffs with him so um I have met him and spent some time with him and my only advice to him would be and this is this is tricky is to be yourself if you're not if he's not comfortable with being a social commentator in the way that Gareth became very comfortable then probably does best to avoid it but overall what do you think because we've had such a mixture haven't we you know Sven gor and Erikson largely very well in with the Press Terry venal until he wasn't really well in with the Press they never liked Capello never really got to grips with him partially I guess because of the language barrier was so difficult those are and he was a tyrant thank you very much indeed um can I just say before Danny answers yeah and and you will know this anyway Dan anyway but just for people outside the Press cores changed over a lot of years so some of the managers you just mentioned they would have been head coaches or managers during the time of a very different group of journalists to the ones that are senior journalists now who are very even-handed who are very open-minded who um establish relationships and work to build on those relationships and many of whom will have followed Lee throughout his time as under 21 coach on the way to winning the European championship at that level as well Dan I mean it is important this this how he gets on with now what he says is a separate thing but it is important he gets on because Dar Darren's rightly pointed out there the world has changed anything the England manager says which would have been to about a dozen newspaper journalists 30 years ago is now to the whole world because of the way social media amplifies everything yeah I I think um Charisma and warmth um and being able to deal with the media really well helps you when you need to paper over the cracks I think it gives you popularity and if you're good at deflecting at times can give you extra time in a job if you're brilliant with the media I think that's true now if you're really good at what you do and his strength is as he said as a coach and getting a team to play good attack and winning football then do it being so good with the media isn't as relevant I actually think it's less important to be great with the media as an England manager that is with a club manager cuz I think you're doing it more as a club manager and there's more room for error I think with England you can pretty much be pretty PC with what you say because you have to be you're working for the fa granted Gareth did have a lot of topical issues he had to deal with I'm not convinced I or I I wouldn't as a player or a fan want my manager to be to um what's the word I wouldn't want him to be like an MP and have an opinion on everything the only problem with that just just just to more more ask more put it to you to answer is that when you are the England national team head coach your press conferences aren't populated only by football journalist that's your choice well it's not it is but you don't have an obligation to speak on some of the subjects gett spoke on you don't and that's the thing absolutely those people would still be there whether you choose to engage in people can ask you whatever you want if you ever I mean I know what on about club man but let's talk about the best managers in the world over the years Mourinho klopp Guardiola do you think they get railroaded in talking about subject railroaded talking subjects they don't want to talk about they talk about but klopp for example he's so loved by Liverpool fans and neutrals in in many precisely because he did speak about some stuff that didn't have anything to do with what was on the pitch the icing on the cake of any manager is if he's warm and charismatic and knows how to to speak to media and fans right that's the icing on the cake but the cake is made with the football on the pitch I totally agree we're agreed on that so yes in an Ideal World you'd want Lee carsley to be better than he is now with the media because he's a bit rigid and a bit cold I I I I don't think that's deliberate I think it's just who he is and he's new to it there's got to be some nerves there's got to be Jesus this is a big deal I've got to make sure I don't say anything too stupid and he's not I think you'll see him evolve I hope we do where he's a bit more warm and a bit more humorous because people like that it's engaging so you want him to be engaging But ultimately what will engage him is the team playing good football and what will disengage him from the fans is playing crap football you know I listen we we we we've been talking about this since even before the show and we're agreed that he's a he's a guy who knows how to win he's a good fit for the national team coach he will bring through from the under 21 uh side players that have won before for him and he will integrate them into the first team I think we have to be a little bit careful calling him a that problem he's not the only one but I was pleased to see him looking sharp I thought he did did all right in the game he' be disappointed he didn't score but I thought he looked much healthier and sharper than he did in the Euros um he's obviously scored already for Munich this season and look the fact that only nine of the players have got through 100 caps tells you all you need to know about how difficult that task is the only thing moving forward I think he'll beat shilon the reason I the reason I'll do is I do is not not just because of his quality and his passion to play but I think also we're really lacking a true competitor for him you know somebody who really pushes him we haven't got one I know Watkins had the season of his life and and he is different but even he started in interim charge it was only initially for the first two games which is this September Camp what are the conversations that that that you've had and and what was your um what were you told that the fa wanted from you well it was to it was to oversee the um the Nations League qualifiers so with three camps um that could change that could change um you know I'm not um I'm not precious enough to think it's about me it's it's about getting the best person for the job um it's it's important that I I keep um I keep the ship almost pointing in the right direction and um you know and do a good job within their minds he actually played some good stuff I enjoyed watching it absolutely because at the weekend I think it might have been the best I've seen England play for a little while just popping that they pushed each other yes and they both wanted to outdo each other although Messi might not say out Li order I think that's more obvious with Ronaldo but I think Messi improved because of Ronaldo as well to to have I know how difficult it is to maintain a level of of good football never to his level but of you know high level played a long time in the Premier League and the reality is you have to sacrifice a lot now to do it to what to the level he's at to be one of the best players we've ever seen takes 10 times a sacrifice to stay on top of that pyramid and he deserves all the ploted he get even if he's a bit Marite you know he is having himself he is pain sometimes with some of the things he does with his historyonics with his tears and his Tantrums acting like a child but but uh as a lover of a headed goal he has been the best headed finish heading finisher along with Ed jeo in the world for about a decade half the way he gets up that ridiculous physique and and gets their goals not matter because the quality isn't the caliber of English football of course they matter say they' gone and done it for Swindon absolutely or let's say he went to Scotland for hearts or someone still count you know so I don't have any problem I think where there might be a debate eventually is um because I think you say Striker but I I I still see Ronaldo as a for a forward a Winger who's become a goal scorer um rather than a striker um so then the debate would be who's the best player uh ever um and no I I I see where Danny's coming from because for year he didn't play he didn't stay out wide for that long no so I think he has spent at least three quarters of his career as a striker so you can judge him on that I would and his goals tell you that but I know what you mean I do know what you mean because I see him as a forward more as a more than cuz he's so versatile you could stick him out W obviously the the now that he's getting on you couldn't put him anywhere else but the center forward position um and there were times that man united for example that he needed to have it on a plate for him I I think it would be a fair shout to say he's the best Striker we've ever I I to to me as a he's not the best player but he's the best Striker no and doesn't pain me because you know we grow up with our own impressions of how the game is when somebody comes along and breaks those Impressions um you know Jimmy grees Etc um you have to be honest with yourself he just is an absolute phenomenon um and you know if if he was to choose to go and play I don't know in another League where perhaps even below um the standard in Saudi Arabia the physical condition is in he could get 2,000 goals being careful and do you know it's the point that Danny made is so true in in that whatever the level of game he play is playing at the fact is that he is someone utterly committed to living his life right eating right training right doing all the things that will put him in the best possible condition to be able to go out and give his best but even if the even if the if the league is lesser and it's easier in people's head to score but the the people he are the people he's playing with isn't modri and Cru anymore so everything drops nobody else has scored as many goals as him in Saudi and that would make it when everything around him drops it makes it even harder for so long ago from Scotland qualifying for their first major tournament in a long time there at the euros and everything was Rosy in the camp you could see good players coming through they younger players who got off to play in places like Italy Steve Clark appear to have it all under control I think I'm right in saying they haven't won in the last 13 games and last night once again thanks to the I say the force of nature to repeat a phrase that is Cristiano Ronaldo they even lost the point they were getting in Portugal in a 2-1 defeat um I don't know Dan I I wouldn't expect you to watch um Scotland quite as close as you watch England but watching the games and as a professional pundit what is going wrong a team that was you know cruising along quite nicely suddenly cannot get themselves into a winning position well I think the um the Euros was a big disappointment for lots of reasons um mainly to do with quality and and I think also a little bit of fear they they seem to freeze a little bit if I'm honest I expected more from them because they'd shown in the qualifiers especially with the performances against Spain for example that they are competitive and they're full of energy and they got some quality so it's not like they don't possess it they just didn't show it which was a big shame especially for the amount of fans they had there I thought the last two games although they've lost them both late on the last two games I've seen I had to look at the highlights of both and I thought they did all right I thought they were a bit more of a threat bit more expansive played with confidence couple of silly mistakes at the weekend of course late goal against Portugal not sure you ever expect a win against Portugal anyway with with their quality but I think there was some positive to take out of the last two performances that's for sure ultimately they a side that relies on togetherness being hard to be competitive without the ball not particularly got an abundance of talent in attacking areas so they're always a bit goal shy so they have to be perfect defensively they've just lost a bit of confidence I think after the after the Euros um and stats can be a tad misleading but that is a worrying one what you just said to not win for that many games because 13 games you don't play good teams every time do you no you've got a mixture there of opportunity haven't you and you haven't turned them into results let me just tell you that uh uh heading for the hour mark in leyon France have doubled their lead against Belgium um and what to say I'm not I'm not making this up the quality and the competitiveness this is like a European semi-final this um let me just check we got the Goan demele has added to Randle K moani's earlier goal um on 56 minutes to make it France to Belgium nil that's in the Nations League Of course um the problem I guess when this sort of run happens Darren is that the previous achievements very quickly get for forgotten and the attention inevitably turns since you can't change the players at International level to the manager um I I look I don't know who they would get to be better than Steve Clark frankly but that's the qu that's that's the question I'll soon be starting asking isn't it they will um and they'll be looking around and is always the way and Steve knows that having been in management for a long time that when the team doesn't win but the pressure starts to be come on in search of somebody who can what I would say is exactly the same as Danny why would you change a guy who gets the players believing in themselves and the way they play the manner that they went about their business on Sunday night and I did see the game I watched it with my son um who gave me a bit of stick when Ronaldo scored um but I thought SP uh Scotland played really well really well they played with belief uh they got forward they put pressure on they were a threat set pieces Scott took his goal really well Momin and scored he scored in the one previous as well didn't he he did he did two in as many games got 10 in his last 17 something nuts like that for for Scotland I started the entire show by saying how underrated he is and I think if he didn't if his Club side wasn't Manchester United I think we'd be speaking about him in much sorry we the The Wider public would be speaking about him in much more glowing terms I also think Gilmore's terrific player I'm so surprised Brighton got rid of him I know they've signed some other midfielders but he's a super Talent he was the best player on the pitch against Manchester United in the second weekend of the season and I think he he he he wasn't used in the Euros as much as he should have been I was amazed by that but ultimately for Scotland down it's very simple isn't it it's they're trying to qualify for every big tournament and then qualification I mean they've qualified for the last two Euros which is an achievement in itself Scotland have been in the wilderness for a long time terms of qualification so there some positives there but it's when they get to the tournaments not being able to translate that do you know what I would like to see personally um and they're good enough they are a good enough side for me to say this in a really constructive way obviously they're wonderful Travelers they have a great party I I wonder if that narrative has run its course now and it's time for maybe for that investment that needs to go in Scotland as a nation has produced some magnificent players over many decades and just like England can get to work to develop players I just would love to see a a cohort of young talented Scottish wonderful players like a greater cohort should we say come through the ranks and really show themselves to be a force on the international stage it would be terrific I'm sure the only go go ahead then qualifying for tournas the only other thing they could do is move to South America um we have we have I'm not being fa we have ourselves a ludic ludicrous situation now where the comall qualifiers are going on for the next World Cup um there are 10 teams in South America of course there are 13 countries but some of those play their football in conquer CF in the Caribbean Part of of the competition six of these South American teams qualify automatically now in the league and one goes in the playoffs you have to really try Ultra hard hello Bolivia um you have to try really very very hard indeed um Peru actually making the biggest mess with it this time around to not qualify from South America MH it used to be said that the World Cup the World Cup was overpacked with European teams You could argue now South America over represented as well um I guess Danny also pressed on another point if you're a nation outside of the powerhouses what you want is a generation that comes along with a great Striker um and Scotland haven't got that at the moment we know no one wants to play Norway in the next lot of qualifiers because they're going to combine lling Harland and S lot up front nobody wants to play Sweden where um isak and goerz um they won both their qualifiers by three goals um at the weekend um they both between them they shared the six goals um nobody would want to play Sweden because they've got their what talent they've got is at the front of the team because it's easier to organize defensively you know I saw this for a you know a decade and a half with the Republic of Ireland who got lots of very good results because Robbie Keane would get them a goal the rest of the team played their hearts out because they knew that if they if they kept the score line narrow that Kean would pop up somewhere and score a goal Scotland just don't have that Liverpool and talk about extending my contract now Danny we know that Liverpool um have to have similar talks with Mo Salah and Trent Alexander Arnold um I want you to be dispassionate here is it important they keep Virgil vany for another two years or can you see any scenario where it's worth moving him on absolutely not he thank God you said that question of Sanity he's the most important one yeah by a mile now Salah is a a great and would be in my oldtime besti Liverpool 11 since I've been a kid head of Steve Highway yeah and Craig Johnston yeah and Sammy Lee the the thing is with Virgil it's not just how good he is and how good he looks this season by the way looks super fit and sharp but it's the influence he has on others every time he plays with somebody they they always get better and look better and we could name all the center RS he's had alongside him over the past six years seven years they've all looked better because of him and he brings a calmness to that Liverpool team and a presence and a fear amongst OPP opposition and the and the other thing is how good he is in both boxes on set plays now there's no coincidence over the years Liverpool set plays records have been so good because of mainly because of him he's a real threat so he's not just a wonderful footballer he's a wonderful influence and I think when you watch generally obviously there'll be an exception where he has a bad day and he's had one Bad season in his whole time at Liverpool but when players play against Virgil forwards even the best ones you can see the respect I wouldn't call it fear the respect that they've got for him very few try and run him very very few try and fight him very few really try and play on him because they know they can't get away they move somewhere else and his presence alone gives you comfort as a player and a fan totally agree I don't see any other Center half out there at the moment who you would you know even if Liverpool decided right you know we'll we we'll pay the 65 whatever it is 70 for gay for example let's just use that as a sure you knowwe whatever yeah yeah or BR weight I I both super talents who are really like good footballers and could play alongside Virgil and be comfortable and really but not replace him the level of play he's played for more than half a decade now has been you know he did have that struggle after his injury he did have a struggle C is the only one Dan you could Cel is the only one you could say is starting to look like he's got the same presence yeah if you if you um don't watch the video of the of the game against Italy at the weekend um it wasn't his fault he was exposed several times by a French Midfield appeared disinterested in the game yeah it's and it's again it's the same thing with celba isn't it's that mixture of physical power and presence Allied to his football um abilities and you I'm glad you said what you said Dan because I don't know where I've watched this with Liverpool in recent times where the opposition they do take their best striking option we usually only have one up front they try to get him where does the player or the coaches are saying now first thing you got to do is get yourself away from Van dijk whatever chance you've got the other fell whoever the other fell is um physically opposing Virgil Van djk is a mugs game um the problem they've got at the moment with Liverpool obviously starting the season well as canate looks great as well so when you're a strike you're thinking oh God better drop off sure well yeah but you can't all play 10 as gr soon as once famous said it's the easiest position to play we can't all be number 10 true I was interested in what you said there about he being the most important because because I mean I can I get what you might say about Mo Salah because as a forward is coming into the Autumn of his career unless of course he's going to go the Cristiano Ronaldo route um keep if they i' try and get them both on threeyear contracts and pay them what they want Trent yeah absolutely well Trent ideally would stay I mean I I thought he would be a more simple a more simple puzzle to solve in in terms of his contract because he's SC to his Liverpool lad the the big concern for me is that it's not done already and why CU that's not a difficult sell Trent two year like two years to go on his contract why or 18 months even why is that conversation not happened why has it not been concluded that is a real question mark to me now does it suggest to you that he himself has some doubts about staying now I think it does especially if the Madrid is is there as an option the Madrid lure is huge even for a SC if you're him Dan you've won all there is to win is there a challenge is there any more of a challenge um it's very difficult question so I I felt like I'd done everything I ever wanted dreamt of while while I was playing for Liverpool and I don't think I would have wanted to go anywhere else but I can never say never because I wasn't in that position but I do understand that when I got to Liverpool then Steve MC manman was there yeah yeah wonderful talent and um he had a lot to achieve still with Liverpool but he made that decision and who can blame him how how well he did when he went over there so Danny I I don't blame you you were a fantastic club and you might have thought you want to stay there for life but of course you hadn't yet played for Tottenham Hotspur that's true so there was always there was always something further down the line at the end of The Yellow Brick Road Danny there was another great mountain to climb listen let's go back to kennworth road because been a further goal in the under 21 International watching for talk sports I said all not we could and I might be wrong here but let's just look at the other options the fact is Liverpool might be thinking I don't know if they've had a brief conversation with Trent representatives and the type of money he'd be asking for maybe they think well hold on maybe we've got a right back in Connor Bradley who could be a superstar in on in in his own right you know how well he did he he looks an absolutely phenomenal player I'm not suggesting he's got Trent's talent but in a different way we don't know yet do we that's well he's not got his passing talent and his you know that wonderful football brain but he's he's got lots of other attributes I mean some of his performances last year when he came to the team were absolutely phenomenal so make my point B in his down is that maybe Liverpool aren't as Keen to throw huge contra tracks at Players as they once were because M Salah said in his interview that they hadn't spoken to him which I found absolutely incredible but it's interesting that in both those positions you mentioned Bradley at right back they brought Kaz in who will play the right side of the attack and it looks as though Liverpool are future proofing themselves against um and deciding if once we do start talking it looks as though things aren't going our way we're still covered we're going to be okay Y and he may also be a Victor him um again this is smoke in the air I haven't got anything solid yet but we saw the last transfer window that English clubs whether it's to do with financial Fair Play What or something else coming down the line that we don't know about yet but they did not go out and spend huge amounts of monies on players the way they have done in the past and they certainly weren't looking to sign free agents who are on gigantic wages Adrien rabio for instance still hasn't got a club because 300 Grand a week at Juventus yes and and part of that is is exactly as you say but also part of it with with Liverpool is that the workers gone in already to build what is an outstanding Squad so now they only need to make the Finish put finishing touches they're only you know each season they need maybe one two maximum players to to upgrade or maintain whatever standard they've set for themselves um I think with the biggest clubs when you put that work in season in season out transfer wise and the recruitment at Arsenal is outstanding the recruitment at Manchester City's outstanding they too they don't need to do that much business I think that's where Liverpool are right now well they've already got the lad from Valencia mammad Ashville the keeper they must be thinking i' had conversations with Allison about what cuz he's got what two years left yeah so that's they are they are planning and thinking ahead but the van dijk is the big I'm telling you now my my opinion on this is that watching Liverpool's offensers to do he's the one that needs to get sorted first think then that I've seen a lot of Center halfes get better with age and although people talk about him being 33 years of age I think about Tony Adams being the leader at Arsenal deep into his 30s and I think of so many other players who rather than their game dropping off into in their 30s that that they are still leaders they're still organizers they still got the authority there are very few players in the Premier League I'd probably saying Europe with the authority of a Virgil vend I don't I I personally think his level has remained remarkably consistent apart from that one season where him and the team were really poor I say really poor compared to their levels he he doesn't look on the slide at all no um so I think the benefit of him now is that he's more of a leader and more confident in what he is than he's ever to score two in the first what five minutes of the game and what they've done in these two games is they've really stamped the way that Craig Bellamy wants to play because they've been open they've been expansive they've been exciting I'll be honest in this game Dan's been schooling me with just how ludicrously um risky risky they've been in the second half because they really he was Burnley coach last year don't forget that well indeed and there was a moment probably about a minute before the move began for the second goal where Dan said they've got six players in the SEC in the opposition half here if one ball catches them out they're finished and that's exactly what went on to happen and I just think that he will probably concede goals along the way but Bellamy has talked about wanting to instill the memory and the the philosophy of Gary speed in this Wales team and you can see it already well there was a real there was a real um 2-1 there was a not in injury time Wales got in down the right hand wing on the right wing Dan and there was four men in the Box waiting for the cross and the two one up in injury time and I'm thinking and you know what he tried to cross it and I'm thinking just run it in the corner but this is you know what would they wouldn't have washed in your day of play but you know what so much to be positive for Craig B really pleased for him lots of energy players playing for the show nice positive like Risk front foot but risky but why not when they feel like they're up against the team they have equal quality to why not go after it why not take the risk the belief they'll get from this game so many people see Welles as a push over post gar Bal they haven't got The Cutting Edge they haven't got the striker they haven't got the belief I tell you what they'll take a lot of belief from these two performances because they were terrific under Bellamy and I'll tell you what the the importance of this result is that so many times in recent years the Wales campaigns have founded because they get really poor results away from home um in games where you expect them to get something and and I actually yeah bit like Danny I admire Craig for this go you know it's you can't you can't go to France and and take them on you know away from home but Montenegro is a different matter um give yourself a chance of winning by going for them and they've done that tonight theyve got a great start of course that really does help um and that's that that's good and because the other thing uh on transure Express last night um we had our Turkish correspondent on ctin J yiles who was disappointed that turkey hadn't won in the principality I had to point out to him that Wales are a terribly difficult team to beat at home the crowd in
