hi Cremant middle school welcome back we did a really awesome job last week on a very difficult concept of comparing architecture styles from the Classical period to music of the Classical period I got a little really insightful responses from you guys and I really commend you on that they that wasn't an easy topic at all to try to make connections with but what you guys really got out of it was the essential element of the lesson was that during that time period people were creating arts and they were creating buildings and they were creating music in a certain style and that music in that style of building or painting or creating music was very symmetrical and very realistic and even though it was symmetrical and beautiful there were still some inner complexities to it so nice job on making those connections and again I appreciate how hard all of you are working so keep that up the middle school that was really great so this week the lesson it's very important for you to listen to the YouTube example that is in your lesson at the bottom of the assignment it gives you a link to watch and that link will link you to the music that is shown in this score this score is there just for your reference and so you can see a picture of the music that's being offered here but it's really important that you just listen to it and I do think that you will recognize this piece of music it's definitely recognizable so it's also really important to take a look at the student response last week we talked about classical music the Classical period a lot of the times we think of classical music as being just any kind of orchestral music something that the symphony would play but that is classical music but there's also a classical time period that existed and that Classical period of 1750 to 1820 was followed by another period of music making which was called the Romantic period and Beethoven was a composer during that time period and Beethoven was a really interesting guy we know that you know at the end of his life he was composing music death which is can you imagine doing that not having the ability to hear yet still composing these amazing master works of music but in the Romantic period what's different about this is that the forms and the music started to get very complex and not quite as simple and while in the Classical period music was light and very controlled it almost seemed stiff and staunch II like something that you would hear from a royal king or something like that the Romantic period started to explore more expressive and emotional ideas so Beethoven wrote in this romantic style period so it's really important to understand that this is different than the last music we listen to which was Mozart so describe how you might or describe the opening music of the symphony so this is Beethoven a symphony by Beethoven described it what does it sound like you should be familiar with doing this kind of activity from things that we've done the music class describe it what does the music sound like what are you hearing here think wonder use that thinking routine that we've used in music I hear I think I wonder that would be a really great way to answer this response for the described portion interpret would you consider this work more classical sounding or romantic sounding why well I gave you a hint that you know we're talking about the Romantic era and this music is much more emotional so describe why you think this might sound romantic or sound classical but if it's a lot more emotional and a lot more complex then that's probably your answer as to what style period this is evaluate there's something Beethoven was trying to communicate in this piece what might cause him to do that so that is again our evaluate questions are always kind of viewer thinking your idea your critical thinking about it and your response so what do you think Beethoven was trying to communicate there's no right or wrong answers but imagine yourself being Beethoven living back in that time and writing this really expressive music what do you think he was trying to create and what would cause him to do that why would he try to express emotion as opposed to just sticking to the clean simple style of just a few years earlier alright so hopefully that helps you guys um check in with me you don't have to check in daily but just you know once a week just so that I know you're out there and that you're doing well you know check in let me know if you have any questions I have always here during office hours one to two and you can always you know send me a message or an email if you need some help - all right take it easy middle school I know you noticed my glasses my eyes are starting to hurt from staring at this computer so much so you know go easy on me all right miss you guys take care see you next week
