guys uh some Shockers some not uh let's first give a proper introduction to today's guest though Nicholas Winkler come on down Wink in a word what did you think about today's cut down of the 49ers 53 man roster play the sound thank you nailed it unbelievable right uh so I think that the biggest surprises are let's start with the veteran players the ones that you think and hope are going to be big-time contributors to the San Francisco 49ers in 2024 one of them won't be and that is Elijah Mitchell has been placed on ir and he has not been given the designation to return so Elijah Mitchell season is over for the San Francisco 49ers that's it for Elijah Mitchell this year Kalia Davis was also placed on injured reserve with the designation to return so um we may see Kalia Davis again and it looks like we will not see Elijah Mitchell all year gone to IR but on the good side of things talanoa hufanga who we thought might start the season on the physically unable to perform list he's actually been activated so he's an active participant which means the 49ers don't expect him to miss you know up to four weeks like he would have to with the with the pup list designation he's going to be back sooner than that maybe even out there starting in week one guys so let's start with uh let's start with Mitchell and uh Croc we had talked about how much we like Jordan Mason looks like he could be a running back too I think he's got to clean some things up in pass Pro um but I thought a healthy Mitchell would still be ahead of him on the depth chart he's not here anymore Mitchell not only not healthy I mean this has been the storyline for him really throughout his career or at least after his rookie year just been banged up missed a lot of time and it's unfortunate especially for a back who Sho I said since his rookie year he banged up at times during his rookie year I think he missed four or five games and still almost ran for a thousand yards so someone that is just so talented but for whatever reason the injury bug just continues to bite him but fortunately for other guys right you know when you're maybe not a starter you're looking for any opportunity to be able to take advantage of it and I think with Jordan Mason questions maybe with the pass protection but there are no questions with how this guy runs the Rock and I think with Kyle Shanahan hey is not looking for Jordan Mason to be this you know three down back but can you come in push the pile a little bit maybe even finish off some games with your physicality uh in the Run game he could definitely do that so excited to see maybe Jordan Mason in a little bit more of an expanded role yeah right because we're talking about wanting to take some carries away from mcaffrey right that maybe there was a little bit too much on his plate throughout the whole season last year so JP Mason does seem like the kind of guy that would come in you know at the end the third fourth quarter or just even you know every couple of drives send him in there run him up the middle have him run some guys over remind him that you know not everybody's Shifty like mcaffrey like you're gonna have to take a few hits and then if you need some speed I mean you've got gendo he he flashed it again in that final preseason game showing you guys like hey look this this is why I I was the fastest running back coming out of college last year and that means running back Patrick Taylor Jr is somebody who's going to stick on the 53 man roster Croc when we projected it we did not project him to be around and I think Jordan Mason I think they should feel comfortable with him running the ball as a number two if his pass Pros up to Snuff then he can just be the straight backup and then obviously gendo has an opportunity to uh to return kicks and and do some of those things but I think the the big surprise on the running back group is Patrick Taylor Jr making the team because Elijah Mitchell's going to IR so that is what it looks like for the San Francisco 49ers group of running backs uh as it pertains to real quick I did like Patrick Taylor like over uh shraer like that was clear to me like if if there is any distinction between the two let's go Patrick Patrick Taylor and whatever you do with uh with shider maybe he's somebody that maybe they put on practice squad but uh I I just I don't know if he's an NFL running back so you might even be wasting your time putting him on practice squad as well as a Niner fan should they go out and sign Frank Gore Jr I mean he was cut today maybe you bring him put him on the practice squad he looked good in the preseason he was undrafted I might have taken him over straighter the begin with anyway I mean obviously it's a name value he Pro I don't know if he would have wanted to maybe that's why he didn't sign with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent they want to live in his dad's Shadow but love to see Frank Gore Jr on the practice squad for the 49ers uh so we'll see what happens there they got to fill out the practice squad and we'll get some announcements on that one tomorrow after players go through waivers um the the skill group is interesting so quarterbacks no surprise pie dobs Allen we don't even know the official quarterback to but had a feeling all three of those guys were going to make it um we just talked about the running back group but the the pass catchers I think there's multiple surprises and I think Brandon iuk and I think actually Ronnie Bell needs to send Brandon iuk his first game check if Brandon iuk misses his because I think it's the only reason why Ronnie Bell made the roster the other six guys was exactly as we expected it's uh it's auk holding in it's Deo Samuel it's Ricky piol Jawan Jennings Jacob coing and Chris connley those were the six I expected I did not expect a seventh even with auk doing what he's doing but Ronnie Bell made the roster and probably someone else had at another position had to take a hit because of that and we'll see how long Ronnie Bell sticks around if Brandon I comes back but I think that was one of the a big shocker as well I think so one of the other position groups that took a hit is that tight end group right I mean you look at who got kept only two tight ends you got teams like the Titans and the Bengals out there keeping five tight ends on their 53 man and we we're keeping two I I so what's more surprising guys the fact that the guy who's been running as tight end 2 the entire camp and preseason in Eric sober got released or that and that got beat out apparently by Jake tongas who was you know solid but unspectacular from what I saw in Camp and uh local guy losos native by the way Jake tongas so George KD and tongas the only tight ends that make the initial 53 man Rosser they're gonna add a player before the before the the week one starts they bring back sober does sober come back in week two but what's more surprising I think saber comes back now I I think he's gonna be somebody that gets added when they clear some things up they end up putting somebody on IR some designations get applied to guys and it opens up uh a roster spot and they'll probably bring him back and they've probably already told him they wanted to do that and they probably had to do it that way uh you probably couldn't do that with tongas because with some of the younger guys you have to like release them and then somebody claims them or excuse me you have to wave them and if somebody claims them off waivers they just have to go to that team with some of the veterans you can release them and just say hey don't even move out of the extended stay hotel you're in stay packed right there matter of fact go get you an apartment bringing you back we just needed to do this for roster space and yeah it might not just be uh Eric sober that they do that with it might be Rocky sin as well yeah a little wink wink a little like Hey we're gonna bring you back but we don't want to put the guy through waivers because we want to keep him and so we're going to bring you back tomorrow basically and so we'll find out exactly what that looks like I have the same feeling and I think saber's ahead of tongus when he does come back to the roster and he's going to be the tight end too but that was that was a shocking one because I just I didn't expect that one at all uh and the 49ers have had trouble finding a tight end two and the guy that had played the best you cut that that was a little surprising at first but but but Croc I think you're you're speaking some wisdom there uh is it more shocking the 49ers cut last year's third round pick in Cam latu and then their seventh round pick in Braden Willis as well so they they double dipped at the strongest position in the 2023 draft guys and neither one of them made it in the year two I was definitely surprised to see Bron Willis let go I think everybody kind of saw the latu situation written on the wall but with Bren Willis man he's coming out there like I talked about the first play where uh Brock pie hit Debo Samuel down the left sideline in the Raiders preseason game who's out there with him Braden Willis he split out wide we saw him split out wide we saw him at tight end we saw him at in the back field at the fullback position just his usage it was telling me that hey this is someone that we plan to use in multiple ways and I thought oh yeah he has a short line to making the 53 man roster but they let him go so I'd assume he's another one of those guys that they say hey we want to bring you back on practice squad uh maybe they offer him more money to make it to where he does stay with the 49ers while having him on P Squad but uh I I I would like to have him around because I think he brings a nice little versatility to the 49ers team yeah and I think that versatility would make the 49ers kind of choose him over latu right if they had to bring one guy back to the practice squad you'd go with the guy who could oh oh something's up with juice we can we can actually put Willis as fullback we can get him back there and and he's got good speed and you know latu just there were there were he got opportunities and it just looked like he had stone hands like it just looked like he couldn't make a catch and I know tight ends a lot of what you do is blocking out there but you also got to be able to have a be a threat to go out and catch a ball and if you're dropping everything throwing your way like Bren Willis just seems like more of a a good fit for the 49ers he's he's someone I think they'll want to get back on the practice squad a little bit versatile who knows maybe gets called up to the 53 again at some point uh he's just a little unathletic to me when I see him moving around for an undersized tight end he's not like super quick out there or dynamic and you know with the ball in his hands or I don't know if they liked what they saw with him when he was HB fullback doing that type of stuff too so I think Bron Willis he might be just a a little short in the athletic department and he was a player they thought well look if he gets swiped up get swiped up and it's not going to crush us completely so that's probably what didn't happen with Bren Willis even though he was out playing his fellow draft pick and latu and latu was just you know a bust of a pick from the start unfortunately uh and that's the way it goes sometimes sticking in that tight end room real quick uh poor Logan Thomas he comes in and like two days later be placed on ir and have an opportunity to return uh so that's going to be one corresponding move that's going to be one roster spot that does open up tomorrow there might be a couple of more of those players uh Amry Thomas comes to mind we'll get to the defense in a second because I wasn't sure he was worth that trouble in the first place um but Aaron Banks Jake brindle Spencer berford colon mckivitz Jaylen Moore John Fano Dominic puny and Nick zakel only count the offensive tackles guys col m c him mgit that's it Trent Williams is on the reserve did not report list they didn't keep any other tackles on the roster so someone else is coming back tomorrow uh if not two guys at offensive tackle before they play week one and so um I I think you look at some veteran players that were cut Chris Hubbert is the one that comes to mind I thought there was no way he couldn't make the team just because of that uh Brandon Parker as well uh so a couple tackles there do they go searching outside and I do think there's a potential for maybe another uh maybe another player or two that's added to the roster offensive line tight end most likely in-house maybe someone coming from the outside as well maybe a defensive end they could be shopping for as well so um yeah this is definitely a living breathing roster and is not done and obviously they're not going to go into the season with one offensive tackle guys yeah I mean one offensive tackle and even the one guy mcgz who is an offensive tackle he was like drafted to play guard it wasn't even like he started off at tackle and he started playing tackle more out of necessity as opposed to just oh this guy is so good at tackle let let's put him there so uh I think when people have had some issues with the draft and maybe let yes you got Dominique Poney that's somebody who has tackle experience but not maybe addressing tackle a little bit more in the draft to where at least there's some young developmental guy some depth you have none of that and you look down the line hopefully they do address that soon I'm sure they potentially will but you know you look at Trent Williams in the situation whether he plays this year or he ends up retiring or whatever it's not like he's going to be playing for another two three four years right so at what point do you start to prepare for hey even if it's a fourth round pick a fifth round pick but just someone who we can kind of groom and prepare and get better and potentially step in and be able to play The Tackle Spot guys we have to get to know somebody and that somebody is Sam uanu and uh we're going to have to get his name right too because I've butchered it and tried not to say it because I he wasn't somebody I expected to make the 53 man roster but I got to put some respect on his name uh if you try to read it it's not going to be correct for your brain so Sam okanu is how you pronounce it 61 269 pounds is what he listed as and the 49ers needed to bring one other defensive end maybe a guy that could play some inside because it's 61270 nearly is what He's listed as um that's an interesting body type right you think about remember Ronald Blair back in the day someone that could play outside a little inside as well um here's the here's the report on Sam okanu this is his draft report from Dame Brugler I think we need to get to know him a little bit better he lived in Liberia until he was 12 years old when he and his mother fled the country to the United States settling in L Massachusetts uh was a soccer player originally so he's got those soccer player feet then uh played football as a junior at L high school before picking it back up as a senior because of grade after originally quitting anyway uh he went to college Maryland uh transferred to Oregon where he spent the last three seasons posting career bests and uh went undrafted to the uh Tennessee Titans in the 2022 draft so this is year three for him and so he's bounced around a little bit but he impressed the 49ers enough with his ability uh you know Stout frame and I saw some flashes in preseason by thought I don't think he's going to make the roster but some injuries to both Floyd and yer gross MOS Sam okanu makes the initial 53 man roster for the 49ers joining Robert Beal and I think he needed an end that could stop the run a little bit and set the edge Robert Beal didn't look like he could do that great in the preseason in his second year so um to go with ygm and Leonard Floyd and obviously backing up uh Nick Bosa is Sam okanu and then the four interior guys no surprise there it's Javon Hargrave it's Malik Collins it's Jordan Elliott and it is Kevin given uh either one of you have a scout report on Sam okano to drop on us no don't don't do like a spelling be or anything because I will fail miserably well the SC I think last season games that's it well the our previous recording when we were talking about some of the guys that may potentially make it we we were a little disrespectful we kind of dismissed him and had to shorten his name to just Sam o because couldn't figure out how to say his last name and maybe he is a name now that we have to get a little used to knowing how to say it absolutely uh linebackers no surprises here uh I guess the big surprise is probably that seventh round rookie Tatum Bon did make the roster uh he joins Curtis Robinson Demetrius Flanigan fos D Winters and obviously Fred Warner and DeAndre Campbell are going to be the starters to start the season with Dre Greenlaw out and that means that last year's seventh round linebacker uh Jaylen Graham did not make the roster so that was probably the big cut there at uh at linebacker did did we see the 49ers keeping seven linebackers am I Trier does that seem like a pretty big number well Dr Greenlaw is on the injured list so he doesn't count so it's truly only six and um I think it was a I think they just didn't want to I think they had too many young players that they they wanted to keep they they thought Tatum Beth's tape was probably good in the preseason he might get snatched up on waivers and they weren't willing to do that I think that's really what it came down to with either taking five or taking six so they took six and they took Tatum bethon another reason why there's only two tight ends on this squad flan fou is another guy who continues to uh stick around and I've talked about it for people that might be confused as to you know why he's out there it's not like you see him flying around making a bunch of tackles but special teams coordinators they get their guy as well and he might be somebody who they feel like has a big impact on multiple special teams units and we saw multiple times during the preseason how important special teams can be and the 49ers didn't look great going in to the preseason heading into the regular season here on special team so hopefully they can kind of get that tightened up Jason in the chat says beun looked like the best linebacker on the field in the preseason he looks so natural as a run Defender uh I still have some questions about coverage what that's going to ultimately look like but but clearly he looked good enough to make a roster and I loved what I saw there and I think he's someone that could absolutely be you know a long-term backup at the inside linebacker spot uh with his uh with his ability to just stop the run it just really looked really natural the way he played like what I saw from D wiers too right oh the way he flies around yeah and you can be athletic and not be good in coverage too that's the other thing and you can be not that fast and still be smart and be good in zone and droing into the right places so kind of you know we get to wait and see with those guys and I and I think another another aspect of it Croc is special teams I think linebackers are valuable with the new kick kickoff return rule I think you want to have as many linebackers out there as possible right I feel like it's that's not about being super fast right yeah I think the skill set is linebacker safety and hopefully your kicker doesn't have to make a lot of tackles next guys uh the rest of the defense the defensive backs specifically what were our biggest takes from the final 50 three who made it who didn't the full list of of cuts as well to finish up this episode of lock down 49ers all right guys Amry thas I thought Ambry Thomas was going to get I I thought Amry Thomas and Elijah Mitchell were gonna be flipped I thought Amry Thomas was going to go on ir and it was kind of going to be you know he sails away and you forget about him and he doesn't he wasn't going to make the roster anyway and I thought Elijah Mitchell they would keep him around maybe short-term IR gain a roster spot back and do that thing but um they actually cut rock Yin and ended up bringing back they cut Rockin and they cut Sam wac to bring back Ambry Thomas who I presume will end up going on IR eventually and you know give them a new spot where they could bring back somebody in another position maybe um but that means they at least have some hope or maybe there's an injury designation uh an injury waiver I have no idea what's going to happen but I just I didn't really expect Amry Thomas to be someone who made the roster and uh he's part of a group that for some reason they put the the official release from the 49ers put dador Lenor as just defensive back he's the only player that's not a corner not a safety it just puts defensive back so uh I kind of like that but at first I saw Corners I was like there's a name missing there and no they they called dador Lenor a DB instead of a CB but it's Trev Ward it's Ambry Thomas it's Isaac Edam it's Daryl lutter Jr which we weren't sure about yesterday Croc and Renardo green along with dador Lenor at corner your thoughts our resident cornerback specialist COC yeah seeing darl lutter make it over rockus sin you understand again this is the roster politics aspect of it I think just watching the games uh you know watching the rep count watching how guys were executing I don't know what they're saying in meetings but it felt like rockson played well and it felt like lutter wasn't terrible but a little bit more up and down and when you talk about roster politics you got a young guy who you just drafted and then you look at the way the season went started on like kind of ir came back late you know got a little bit of playing time it showed that they do like him having him active in the Super Bowl and then this year he's getting a lot of time in the preseason and you're curious to see how that's going to work out with a veteran but once again being a veteran bites a defensive back in the butt so I am curious to see if they bring rockon back because the initial report on Amber Thomas was like a broken form or broken elbow so he's I would assume that he's gonna be out for some amount of time they're gonna probably designate him put him on ir and then bring a guy like roeton back what about Sam wack versus theen we back there's something missing with wack that the coaching staff doesn't like and I feel like I might like him a little more Croc what do you think about Sam wac I feel like he's someone who's G to get picked up by another team that might appreciate his skills more like maybe even the Washington commanders I I hope that whoever picks him up picks him up and they say you know we're gonna play you at cornerback because I get it he's not the the tallest of guys only 5 foot n but he has speed he has length with his arms like that is where he looks to be more natural and watching him play on the outside it it just looked like more of a a fit form that's not to say he doesn't have nickel versatility I mean we watched him pick off two passes his rookie year in the pre first preseason game uh so he knows how to make plays from the nickel spot but for me you know I think his path was going to be showing more versatility as to why they should keep him and maybe they there's something they didn't quite like at the nickel spot but if a team signs him and says all right we're gonna play you on the outside I I think he can potentially show a little bit more there and you know again the best news of the day is at safety talu aonga he's not on the pup list that means the 49ers expect him back soon and he might even roll out there in week one as the starter which would be huge for the 49ers defense and obviously he's activated now so he's on the official 53 along with Jer Brown who's going to start at free safety you got George Odum and Malik Mustafa either of them could start at strong safety if hufanga is not ready to go and you know they could bring somebody up from the practice squad at that point if if huanga uh is inactive early in the season that was the thought process there and and only four safeties make the roster I'm guessing one or two are going to be back either on the 53 or on the practice squad as well and and you like to the young guy Mahoney right CR yeah I lik him a little bit but you know they let him go I'm not surprised the part I'm surprised with is Letting Go both Mahoney and Walker but like you said with tonu funga uh looks like she's going to be active you could see how like all right we we have some space for or we didn't have enough space for one of these guys but I I just expect Mahoney to be brought back on practice squad and wink uh the wit watch continues into 2024 because no Presley Harvin as booming as his punts were he got cut and yeah it is Mitch wishnowski is the punter no surprises there Jake Moody the kicker and uh Tabor pepper The Long Snapper finishing up the Special Teams portion of the 49ers final initial living 53 man roster and I no doubt in the next even 24 hours there going to be some changes maybe even a trade potentially coming you feel bad like I hope someone like okanu like they don't they might trade for a defens event tomorrow and then all of a sudden now he gets cut again and then maybe he is up on the practice squad if that's the case you know there's going to be some of those things where yeah I think I made the roster yeah oh man I was only on the roster for 24 hours and then I got released because something else happened Brandon IU came back and now Ronnie Bell is gone I wonder if they thought they could get something for Ronnie Bell in trade and that was kind of them calling the Bluffs of other teams and they're like okay well look he made the roster now so you're going to have to trade for him and you think you think it's Belle's spot and not not Conley who might get cut when I comes back I would keep Conley I think he's better I would too I'm just saying they kind of you know just seems like they play a similar position I think it's possible and I think we could have seen a thing where you know that you could bring the the the sober The Rockin thing where this guy's been around the league you can bring him back he's he agrees as like hey I'm not I'm not going somewhere else you're going to bring me back tomorrow that's cool not to put the young guy on waivers I could see a situation like that I just think that uh I just think Conley's ahead of him in the depth chart whether it's special teams you know coverage units whether it's you know on the field I think connley starts in place of uh in place of Brandon IU if the you know if if he's not ready to go for week one and ideally you know you start to work in Ricky Piera yeah right yeah still got the blue jersey on hopefully is ready to go by week one two which would be but great question right there who's doing the pun returning right is probably Bell right uh it's cing I think it's cow you think so yeah trust the rookie out there all right I I don't think Bell has shown enough to trust him anyway either so I think you know C's more Dynamic and he looked good I think he dropped a couple early in Camp and then had the injury but then once he came back I think he's been lights out I didn't see him look like he would had any problems catching punts in the preseason games and and so um I think Cowen gets the yeah gets the Jersey there for me I like it real quick I'm GNA run through I'm G actually put it up on the screen so everyone can see it and uh and you guys stop me if you if you have one that's like man I cannot believe that one that was the most surprising so if you're watching on YouTube it's gonna be up on the screen as well so here are the official roster moves all of them uh that happened today Ben B Robbie chosen Chris hubard defensive tackle T McGill who I thought was on the cusp Brandon Parker Eric sober Trent Taylor Logan Thomas Tracy Walker the safety Nick Williams and rock Yin all veteran players that were released and then the uh the younger players on rookie contracts that were waved and not released are Isaac allone defensive lineman Evan Anderson defensive lineman Alex Barrett Shaquelle Brown Jonathan Garvin you had a couple more offensive lineman and Sebastian Gutierrez and sixth round pick Jared Kingston which is sort of a mild surprise but again they they needed tackles and not interior offensive lineman uh to make this roster so just too many numbers on the interior I think for Jered Kingston even though I thought he held his own pretty well in the preseason wide receiver third round pick Danny gray gone tied end third round pick Cameron latu gone you had cornerback Jak Chase Lucas with safety Jaylen Mahoney uh another Center in Drake nent that I think will be back on the practice squad along with tight end Mason Pine running back Cody Shader tight end Braden Willis I think all those guys are prime uh Prime individuals to bring back to the practice squad Samuel wac Tanner Moray quarterback uh let's see Tay Martin wide receiver as well and I think that is all of the Official Cuts and Waves for the San Francisco 49ers uh what was the one thing that stood out to you wink probably suburn just because like you said we we pretty much saw him as tight end two throughout the postseason when we went out to practice he was running with the twos and he was out there with the ones as well like he to me seemed like a guy who was was locked down and was GNA see a lot lot of two tight end set action so that was surprising uh once again with people that you know looked at that list remember if they were released they're free to sign anywhere right now guys that are waved you can be claimed by anyone so a lot of teams with some of these players on like rookie contracts or some of those they don't want to subject those guys to being picked up when they can tell a veteran hey just hang tight don't move we're going to be signing you back tomorrow guys that are way you don't have that option if somebody claims him they claim him right I think this is pretty legit from Dr Steve Brule Bell does everything none of it good but he does it all and you yeah there's some utility to Bell being on the roost and I get that the great thing about Bill you go back to this time last year people were really high on him oh he's a hot strong preseason you know he played well and uh that just kind of shows you how fast things happen in the NFL where you know you would assume that oh he's only going to get better from year to year and watching him in this preseason it felt like he was kind of feeling the heat a little bit more thanks everybody for making this your first listen I want to go programming announcement is postcast is a new initiative here the lockdown podcast Network for every team uh there is going to be a postcast podcast that is live after every episode COC it's not going to change anything that Croc and I are doing at all it is uh it's it's Croc and I are going to go live after games most of the time sometimes we might not be able to and then the postcast will be there for you uh if if you really if you really need it you can do both shows back to back but you know every sport every team it's just something that the uh the network wanted to do because you know some hosts are at the stadiums hosting you know uh covering games in a reporter role they're not able to go live afterwards the network just really wanted to make sure that every podcast had something live after all the games in all the sports so that includes lockd on 49ers so host Eric inel is the guy that is doing the uh instant reactions live on the lockon 49ers audio feed and also on the new if you haven't checked it out there is the locked on San Francisco YouTube page so you're not going to find the postcast on YouTube you're going to find it only on the lockon 49ers audio feed the
