you for the critical role you played in making today possible and of course a very warm welcome to the class of 2024 okay amen we thank you for these four years together you and all your fellow dolphins are Le Mo's Beating Heart four years I'd like to say that time flies but I'm not so sure that's always the case I know you remember 2020 do you remember eating in your dorm rooms wearing masks to class and bathing in hand sanitizer you applied to Le Moine right around the time that covid broke out and you came to Le Moine when covid was at its worst all new college students have to adjust to new places and people but you did it under conditions no other Le Moine students have ever faced now I don't want to play favorites but the class of 2023 had a normal first year until March they were able to get settled in before things went crazy and by the time the class of 2025 arrived life wasn't what you'd call normal but we kind of knew what we were dealing with you the class of 2024 left home and jumped straight into the jaws of the unknown in my book that makes you a remarkably resilient Class come on yeah yeah you were Brave to come but once you got here especially during that first year you were downright heroic it might not have felt that way but let's think of everything you did you rolled with the NeverEnding stream of changes and surprises you made new friends and learned new things you took care of business and of each other you did what had to be done under extremely difficult conditions and you stayed cheerful you kept your sense of humor and even had some fun and in a thousand different ways you did the right thing always looking ahead to a better tomorrow in a word heroic like I said it probably didn't feel that way but you showed the kind of Courage that underpins Humanity's greatest moments and its highest values it isn't glamorous or flashy or self-aggrandizing it is steady and quiet and humble it answers hardship with love and suffering with generosity it isn't a momentary impulse it is the work of a lifetime it does not conquer it persuades it is not discouraged by failures it draws inspiration from possibilities and the truest form of courage Finds Its expression in optimism faith hope and loving service we see this kind of courage in the lives of our honores Mary Beth fry has spent nearly 20 years feeding the hungry here in Syracuse that's something like two million meals two million times that people did not go hungry Dr James and Mary Carol have always been strong supporters of education and now through their incredible generosity they will help generations of students yet to come and father Francis Clooney has dedicated his academic career to comparative theology armed with the courage to challenge and illuminate his beliefs by the light of other Traditions he has built Bridges and open dialogue among people of different faiths Freeda jocks our commencement speaker has also encouraged dialogue working as the turtle Clan's cultural liaison for 40 years I am thrilled that Freda will be speaking to us today I've admired her for years she is an advocate and Champion for so many things peace democ y care for our world Education Service to others and Discerning our individual purpose and Mission but if I had to describe Freda in a single word I think that word would be Integrity Integrity in both its meanings honesty and a sense of unity and wholeness Freda insists that the true story of her people be told accurately representing the traditions and beliefs of the nonon in honestly describing the painful wrongs they've endured what inspires and humbles me the most however is that freda's Integrity extends to the way in which she responds to those wrongs true to the h no honos traditions of peace and the good mind Freda retains her kindness her optimism her genius for making connections among people and that my dear graduates brings me back to you your behavior during covid the ability to stay positive despite hardships was an [Music] inspiration I can't let you leave today without telling you how tremendously grateful and proud I will always be but leave you must so I will close with these remarks I'll end not with sage advice advice but with an Earnest request wherever you go whatever you do promise me you'll continue to show the kind of courage and optimism you've shown here at Le Moine the world needs people of Integrity people who do not get easily discouraged it needs people who improve the lives of their fellow beings it needs people who believe in small Solutions are better than in action it needs people who will never give up who will never lose faith in the future and it needs people who know how to laugh it needs you class of 2024 congratulations to each and every one of you stay well stay in touch God bless you and of course Fins Up [Applause] thank you president lamura it is now my pleasure to introduce the representative of as a first generation Guatemalan and American graduate I recognize there are other first generation students out there from different backgrounds and cultures from who are celebrating this Milestone today this wasn't easy as most of us may have struggled with impostor syndrome but we persevered and look where we are today standing next to the people who have helped us navigate all of this even though some of us may have drifted apart hopefully we can hold on to all the memories that we once shared together we will all carry peace of each other into our future lives that would define who we are and who we become growing up I'm pretty sure most of us have seen the High School Musical movies we all pictured Our Lives to be nothing but a High School Musical but unfortunately the world had a different path in mind on March 13th 2020 we were all notified that schools were going to be closed for 2 weeks two weeks turned into two months and then turned into two years our college experience was drastically different from those who came before us we had a to new ways of living and learning facing challenges that no one could predicted yet in the face of adversity we focused on the positive as a class we came together supporting one another and making the most of our unique situation we said oh I apologize I remember our first night on campus we said goodbye to our families and said hello to the next chapter of Our Lives that Sunday night we all sat down on the grass and watch the fireworks light up the beautiful night sky that moment symbolized our beginning of our unique College Journey fill with unexpected twists turns incredible growth resilience and unity who knew that we would be able to do all of this with our beautiful tent situation around campus who knew that we will be meeting our future lifelong friends while wearing mask as we sit here today ready to embark on the next chapter of Our Lives I want to remind you of the incredible potential each of you possess we have already pres oh we already proven our resilience adaptability and the strength in the face of unpresented challenges now it's time for us to take these qualities and use them to make a positive impact on the world around us as Dolphins we've been taught to navigate through the depths of knowledge to communicate effectively and work together towards common goals these skills will serve us well as we venture out into the world seeking to make a difference in our chosen fields and communities remember the journey ahead will not always be easy but we have the tools and the support system to overcome any obstacle we have each other the bonds that we formed during our time at Lio and the unwavering support of our family friends and the ly College Community and now I would like to honor the two most important people in my life I'll be speaking in Spanish but y'all will get the just I apologize a little tears might be shed am mama [Music] for for Pap [Music] [Applause] we all have people out there who we are honoring our success for many of us we are the first ones to achieve this Milestone and the first ones to pay the past for those around us no matter who we are this diploma is not just ours it's also for our families who supported us on this unpredictable Journey so my fellow graduates as we leave this ceremony today let us do so with our heal held high ready to face the challenges and the opportunities that awaits us let us continue to learn grow and make a positive impact on the world just as we've done during our time at ly congratulations class of 2024 Loos we did it and I cannot wait to see the incredible things we'll achieve in the years to come thank you gracias thank you heny CE you are truly a credit to your class at a separate ceremony yesterday Le Moine College awarded honorary degrees to the following individuals Dr James J Caroll class of 1966 and Mary a Carroll the Reverend Francis Francis X cloney of the Society of Jesus Miss Mary Beth fry and Miss Freda jacqu honorary degrees are awarded to persons deserving of recognition by virtue of their scholarly distinction noteworthy public service or other outstanding contributions by their accomplishments they bring distinction to the college and serve as role models for our graduates I ask these honorary degree recipients with us today to rise and be [Applause] recognized among our honorary degree recipients is today's commencement speaker Miss Freda Jac anoga Clan mother of the turtle Clan at this time I invite the most Reverend Douglas Jia Bishop of Syracuse to come forward to read the degree citation from M Freda [Applause] Jac Freda shock onandaga Clan mother turtle Clan has served as a leader of the onandaga nation and within the hadani Confederacy for more than 40 years acting as a cultural leason within educational institutions across New York State and until her retirement working as a homeschool yison at on at onandaga Nation school she continues to be a dedicated educator respected leader and a powerful advocate for Humanity's responsibility to the Earth and to Future Generations ations she shares the gift of her knowledge teaching diverse audiences about the culture and values of the unaga nation Central fire of the hadani Confederacy the oldest living government founded on the principles of peace and democracy at Le Moine we are blessed to know Freda as a caring longstanding friend to the campus community for years she has con has consistently participated in Frank necessary and sometimes difficult conversations within the college with the college students faculty and staff we are without a doubt better for it Freedom brings us wisdom generous but firm CR critique and an intention to the shared values and goals that bind us to together as Community those values include the preservation of the environment the promotion of justice and the protection of our most vulnerable neighbors Freda is an expert at guiding her non-indigenous interlocutors toward a realization of their often unconscious ways of knowing the world of relating to land and to others she excels at revealing the often unrecognized ways that generations of immersion in a settler Colonial worldview grounded on systems of domination which naturalize resource extraction and the concept of land ownership have eded both obvious and submerged patterns of thinking and all those it affects these patterns have been integrated for so long that they are often seen as natural Universal approaches to the world rather than the culturally and historically contingent contingent Concepts that they are and bringing these lenses to the surface for her listeners she encourages the refraining retraining of habituated thoughts to foreground just relationships among communities and care for the Earth our common home Freda does all this with tremendous generosity of spirit and with an unceasing effort to see clearly the strength and struggles of those she encounters it is my honor to introduce Miss Freda jock [Applause] nanu I'm thankful you're well so happy that everybody can be here today that you're well enough to be here so I was given 10 minutes that's not a long time and I'm accustomed to just talking away for hours so I have written it in my speech and hopefully uh I'll keep within the time wean AA as part of the hodon which many of you know as the iroise Confederacy have lived through a great deal of trauma we are not perfect but we have some valuable lessons to share from our culture in history first of all I'm thankful you're well let us recognize how beautiful our surroundings are Creator G gave all parts of creation duties to perform and we can see how they the grasses trees Birds Waters the lifegiving foods the bird life the sun moon and stars all are all doing their duties from the time of creation Creator Gave All Humans the duty to be thankful Creator gave all people on Earth ways to give appreciation and Thanksgiving to all parts of creation you all have come from somewhere on Earth where there may be indigenous people who continue to follow their original directions and have maintained their ways of giving Thanksgiving I encourage you if you are interested to research the original ways of the people of your origin our people the hod aoni have a history of recovering from a very violent time where violence was so prevalent that very few people died a natural death we came to peace without War at the beginning of time all peoples were given good instruction to be loving kind and caring to one another we existed for thousands of years in a peaceful way here in hodon land but people began to forget and it got so violent that the it got so that the most violent men became the leaders and revenge killing became rampant the Creator sent a messenger of Peace who was born on the other side of Ontario he was sent to help end this very violent era I'd like to share a lesson that I call Healing For Peace as The Peacemaker was traveling over the woods and Hills there was a situation happening here at anoda where a man named henta who had several daughters experienced a great tragedy it started with another man who lived at anaga who asked to marry Hay's oldest daughter henta refused used him the man asked for the second daughter he was refused again he went on to asked for the third daughter he was refused this m Man became so angry that he killed all but one a toddler of ha's daughters ha's heart was on the ground with grief ha wento into the woods to care for himself as a human being carrying that great grief I went have thought about how he was as a human consumed with grief he began making strings of beads each string of beads representing a part of his being affected by grief his eyes were puffy and red he could hardly see it was as if he was seeing through a tunnel tunnel vision he was no longer able to see the beauty around him it was as if as if his ears were shut off when his daughters died he no longer heard the birds singing he was not aware if someone tried to speak to him his throat was raspy and dry he had cried so many tears he could hardly speak he made more strings of beads to represent other ways he was affected by grief one day The Peacemaker happened to come near and he heard henta reviewing the meaning behind the strings he had made The Peacemaker was overtaken by compassion for henta and stopped to use the strings to help henta recover The Peacemaker used a soft white do skin to wipe ha's eyes and asked the Creator to clear his sight so haa went to enjoy all the beauty around him again the PE Peacemaker used the soft feather to clear ha's ears and he asked the Creator to open his hearing so he might hear all the birds you might hear all the beautiful sounds of Creation The Peacemaker took a fresh cup of water and haaa was asked to drink it he had him drink it and he asked the Creator to clear ha's throat so that hawin could speak clearly once again The Peacemaker went on to cover all the strings that hawi had made and when he was finished henta could stand he could carry a clear and good mind and no longer wanted to kill that man who had killed his daughters The Peacemaker asked ha went to travel to travel with him on his journey to carry the message of Peace after recovering from my own trauma I know that it's possible to express and release strong emotions that can hinder your ability to carry on in a peaceful a to carry on a peaceful and fulfilling life I believe that henta was asked to travel with The Peacemaker as proof that you can recover from any trauma many of our people have learned this lesson again after our boarding school experiences some returned home from boarding school carrying anger sometimes r AG because of their mistreatment in boarding school this anger and rage sometimes shame continue to bring difficulties to their lives although not all have have recovered from their experience their families endured in boarding school many have found ways to peacefully recover from them humans experience trauma wherever you are on earth there are many ways to heal from trauma it is good to know that you can recover and find your way back to a good mind and loving heart even now in our our in our protocols in modern time a procedure where Nations meet one nation will recognize the other's loss since they last met this is then reciprocated by The Other Nation this procedure was followed not too long ago ago when our Representatives traveled to Washington DC to visit the state department in 2002 2014 by recognizing loss in this protocol I feel it's a reminder never to enter into a time again where killing is out of control and how important peace is we are at a time when most of us may find ourselves dealing with a natural disaster it is my wish to share some of the knowledge and direction to help you with what you may have to live in through in the future to start with I suggest that you get in the habit of thinking of others get to know your neighbors I know it's difficult in the city but our cities are not immune to disasters you will benefit from helping each other it is very easy to get depressed at this time before depression takes over stop and help someone a neighbor may need help with yard work help them whatever skills you have use them to help others this will help you boost your self-esteem and help you feel better as you go through life and have to deal with hurt loss violence or harm of any kind give yourself time to deal with the strong feelings you have about it find a trusting friend or counselor to listen what to what occurred to you just having someone recognize your hurt can be a first step in your healing as you attempt to recover try to have an intent to release any anger or rage some time shame that you have about your circumstance recover as best you can so when you find yourself dealing with a natural disaster you will be more able to respond in a good way and also be available to comfort and support your family and Community thank you for listening today [Applause] thank you freder for your kind generous and inspiring words we have one final short message for our graduates I ask that you please direct your attention to the screen the class of 2024 [Applause] following the ceremony we ask that our guests remain in their places until the platform party the faculty and all of the graduates have left the commencement site will all who are able to please rise our benediction will be offered by the Reverend Donald Kirby of the Society of Jesus Superior of the Le Moine College Jesuit Community following the benediction the Le Moine College commencement Ensemble and choir will lead us in the singing of the alma moer we all have so much to be thankful for this morning so let us just pause for a moment and quiet our hearts merciful and loving Creator we ask your blessing upon these new graduates of Le Moine College bless their families their friends and those who have assisted them on their journey and we pray that you bestow on them three lasting gifts first help them to remember what our commencement speaker Freda jacqu so well demonstrated by her words and her example to be a fulfilled human being we must enter into into three very important relationships a relationship with our creator with all of our brothers and sisters and with our mother earth our common home we pray that we will learn to treat these relationships as our sacred trust secondly we pray that we remember that you are a god of surprise who would have ever thought that what you said through the prophet Isaiah and Jeremiah would be true before I formed you in the womb I knew you before you were born I set you apart I appointed you as a prophet to the Nations Lord you have created each of these students for a unique purpose and you love them we pray that each graduate is able to discover and to bring to fruition that purpose and finally in the Christian tradition today is we celebrate Pentecost on that day the spirit of God and a great force hovered over God's people and gave them a boldness of spirit May that same Spirit be given to each of you our graduates and with that may you have a deep trust that God is always with you until the end of time Creator God mother and father look at these young people you know each of them by name heal and transform their relationships with all of their brothers and sisters accompany these young people on their Journey give them peace this day and forever more we ask this in the name of your son amen [Music] the stand the be to all and on [Music] the we to [Music] your [Music] heart that we stand your the and we are yours and of may your IDE be your Praises [Music] ever as on the you stand your on our from Ro heart our We Stand Your Heart the and we are yours for and [Music] [Applause] the 74th commencement of Le Mo college is now concluded graduates go forth and change the world for the better as you have learned to do care for yourself and others as whole persons whose Body Mind and Spirit need nurturing seek Justice and build communities that are hospitable and welcoming to all serve as wise custodians of our common home planet Earth to create a sustainable future for generations to come and know that we at Le Moine will always be here to support you and welcome you home to the heights may God bless each and every one of you today and always
