Queens inter league baseball on MLB The Show it's the Boston Red Sox going up against the New York Mets first pitch coming at you right after the break so almost ready to get underway and today's starter Jose kintana well he comes at hitters with a five pitch mix so for him it's always interesting to see how he utilizes those weapons he may lean on one or two pitches depending on how things are going and how things are working but if he can control four or even five of those offerings look out hitters it's going to be a tough day he's really going to be able to keep those guys off balance and now here's a speed threat outfielder jiren Duran fast ball in for a strike and we're underway the wine of the pitch and a swinging a [Applause] Miss gets a piece and it stays 0 and two the wi to the pitch good job to fight that one off you could see he was trying to stay back long enough to handle the off speed pitch but just a little Tardy on the fast ball that one not close it's a ball in two strikes and a foul ball he stays alive well he's having a tough time getting a pitch by him as a hitter you feel pretty confident that you're seeing different pitches still able to make some type of contact and the onew misses to even the count on the ground to third lays out but he can't squeeze it he decides to hold on to it and so they end up with some speed on it first man aboard and here is [Applause] des and there's a strike on the outside corner kintana a former Allstar he features a sinker a for seamer a curve a change up and occasionally mixes in the [Applause] slur the pitch a little bit High and the count is one and one Durant gets his lead at first with nobody out lifted in the air now the left side that one gets down for a hit well those kind of Lucky soft hits will always make you smile kind of just punts it out there the other way didn't hit it real hard but he got just enough of it to dunk it behind the infield and I tell you what you'll take those every day you can get him now batting Tristan casus in the air pretty deep out to center field makes the grab Runner tags from third and in comes the first run of the game as the Red Sox Take the Lead sometimes all you got to do is your job and don't over complicate things keep it simple Runner third less than two outs put the ball in play and a nice job with the sack fly masataka Yoshida digs in now and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter the pitch in the dirt and that's ball one well with the amount of pitches that can end up in the dirt a good secondary lead doesn't have to get away from the catcher but if you're anticipating based off the trajectory get yourself in the scoring [Applause] position that one blasted deep to right Marte drop step going back and out of here he Nails one out to right and they throw a pair on the board it's three nothing really great job anticipation there he knows he throws the Sinker that one down in the zone you're trying to beat it to the spot it's getting to well he [Applause] won base is empty one away here's Trevor story now and he can't come up with it and he's going to make it to First and we'll see how they score it one gone runner at first here's the rookie right fielder Willer Abu and a pitch out but nothing going on Red Sox already leading and that's off the Inside Edge and the count is two and0 and now the Lefty that one misses and that's ball three [Applause] and he walked him on four pitches that just came apart right there four pitch walk and Guy the play was not going to help him out by swinging at something out of the zone two on with one out now the left fielder Tyler O'Neal that one finds the zone and that is strike one well with this many pitches thrown here in this first inning I mean you're giving the other team a really good look he's going to have to find a way to get some weak contact maybe a swing and miss get into that Dugout and hit the reset button two on one out comes up empty that strike two good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand looks so good and then by the time he gets in The Hitting Zone hard to get the barrel to it gets a piece there we'll do it again Runners at first and second with one gone that Miss inside and the count one and [Applause] two got him looking two away just locked him up right there for the second out and that's an a bat he's probably going to be thinking about for a little while didn't pull the trigger not how you want to go down in an RBI spot so now you got to hope your teammate behind you can pick you up Von Grom stands in here leaves that one off the inside fast ball for a strike and it's one and [Applause] one ground ball right side Alonso takes it himself that ends the inning and they limit the damage but they strike for three in the inning two on this two-run home run it's now three nothing back here at City Field and starting this one Nick pavetta what's the word on him well that 12 to6 curveball explodes out of the hand and because he's able to throw the high fast ball at the top of the strike zone for a strike hitters commit to that pitch and before they know it they're swinging over the top of that curveball now here is Brandon nmo here comes a pitch and that's in the dirt sometimes pitchers working backwards starting with the breaking ball but it's a tricky approach he almost wants to bait you out there to throw that stuff to start the Adat next offering is in for a strike just missed the count two and one sliced hard but foul the two- two gets a piece and stays alive here's a two- two and another ball outside and that is ball four it's tough after falling behind a hitter two balls and no strikes but now at least he gets a fresh start against a new batter but he needs to get back into the strike zone and start pitching with conviction and now here's Jeff mcneel first pitch doesn't find the zone and the rander deals and it's even upstead of letting the hitter get his arms extended tied him up a little bit slightly up slightly in nmo on at first nobody out the one- one is fouled off [Applause] got him one gone here man at first here's Francisco Lindor Center Field Durant under this one he's got it and there's two away here's a Mets lineup now this is a veteran Le lineup right here a lot of players with plenty of experience singy yeah no doubt about that boo these players have been around the game for a long time and they may not have the flash that they once did but they've got the wisdom to be able to understand different situations be able to think with the opponent and sometimes in front of the opponent and you always seem to see a team like this they come to the ballpark they know how to get down to business and they understand what the job is at hand two outs right through there for a strike well I think that pitch surprised all of us right down the middle doesn't get a swing not very often you see a hitter lay off a cookie like that got it by him for the [Applause] K met strand one they Trail it here three nothing back here in Queens and now Conor Wong kintana back to work swinging a Miss strike one this Ball's chopped on the ground and he picks it up in foul territory ripped on the ground to Second sends it to first one up one [Applause] down so the lineup flips over now batting jiren Duran reached on an infield single this first [Applause] time and that is in for a strike and it's own and one and there's a ball Matthew Ross umpiring behind home played for us in this one he's got a reputation for having a bit of a wide Strike Zone Chris yeah no doubt boo he rewards pitchers when they're working the edges and sometimes a little bit beyond that so for the hitters just have to really be aware don't miss your pitch when you get it early in the count that misses two and two battling here as he fouls it away one out base is empty that one the other way and that's just foul kicks and fires bals it back with two strikes now he's desperately looking for that swing and Miss he's going to have to just change speeds a little bit try to move it around create just a little bit of Illusion at the end and they'll do it again next offering is downstairs fights it off he'll see another quite the matchup we're seeing here six foul balls in this it bat alone really making him work out there the W to kick the pitch out off again and it remains three and two one down base is empty swings and misses struck him out I got to think that was the plan all the way he set him up with the high fast ball and then bury that curveball down low to get him swinging now especially with how effective pitchers work up in the zone these days that's a devastating combination and that one fouled off two out Bas is empty hacks and misses it's a strike out one two three go the Red Socks but they lead it three nothing we head to the bottom of the second Starling Marte up to hit the wi in the pitch ground ball left side and foul ball the one on the ground right side he takes it on his own that's one out the bottom of the [Music] second now it's DJ Stewart that one a little bit High one and0 fast ball for a strike looks like a really good fast ball today you can hear that catcher mitt popping looking forward to hearing a lot of that one in this [Applause] one righty to the plate swings through it and that's a strike out well classic pitch sequencing there to change eye levels for the punch out that fast ball on the pitch before was up it was very competitive and that gets you thinking that he might try to climb the ladder but then the curveball out of that same tunnel just falls off the table and you can't make contact the Red Soxs leading by three bottom half of inning number two comes up empty he finds himself in a tough situation early just got to try to simplify it take a knock the other way if you can and a swing and a miss and that's that nothing doing for the Mets they Trail in this one three nothing top half of the Third third inning so stepping in for Boston Tristan casus the pitch wouldn't chase that time you know these Red Sox doing a great job boo of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way and I'm seeing very patient bats out of them it's not just the three runs they've already scored on top of that they forced this starter to throw more pitches than he wanted to at this point of the game Vader makes the grab one down now next is the designated hitter masataka Yoshida he's already homered here in this one and that pitch count is impactful because if they can keep making him work hard out there it may Force the bullpen to get involved a little sooner rather than later that's inside and now two and0 hard hit left side Lindor on the first now two away here's Trevor story he's over one you talk about Elite defensive players especially in the middle of the diamond and this guy is at the top of the list just missed yeah we go beyond just the you know Fielding percentage and you know what it looks like but the ability to have a range and you know close holes that you know are normally there against an average Defender but this guy is special and you can see it in his first step quickness swinging a foul back that's out of play hog and the one thing about that is speed never goes in a slump and defense shouldn't either hitting wise you can struggle you can lose your mechanics but the thing that you can do consistently every single game is play great defense if you're talented in that way and this is what this guy does and down on strikes and good work there as he gets a one two three Red Sox go down quietly but they lead at three nothing and we're back set for the bottom of the third now the third baseman Brett batty the pitch [Applause] and another ball and a foul ball and he deals breaking ball through there for a strike man this guy's got a great feel for his breaking ball today [Applause] two two keeps theb back going with a foul ball swing and a miss struck him out he had him out in front which isn't easy to do against a hitter like this known for using the entire field just couldn't sit back long enough on that one and first off ring is fouled off now a drag bunt Third Base side beand scoop nicely done for the out well he gave the bun a shot there but not able to execute yeah I think he rushed it a little bit and when guys Rush can be a popup or can be bunted right back at a position player here's Brandon nmo and there's the strike nmo goes 6' 3 in 31 years old and he's one of the few players in Major League Baseball born in the state of Wyoming rander kicks deals in the air left side moving under this one and that'll do it as we go to the top of the fourth and here is Willer Abu as he turns on the rubber here with that good live arm delivers and first off ring is fouled off love it here at City Field you know it replaced old sha Stadium back in 2009 and Chipper Jones was really sad to see it go it's actually the third home of the Mets since they started out at the polo grounds for two seasons before Shay was finished that one misses and it's two and one swing and this one's bounced to the ground mcneel slings to First and one gone to the fourth as they get the lead off man here's Tyler O'Neal struck out looking in his first it backat right through there for a strike well it was bumped be in the early going for the Lefty but he settled into a really nice Groove B is empty one away top half of inning number four Off the Mark there and it's one and one that one catches the corner one down base is empty now the gap between these two this one isn't over [Applause] yet love to see a hitter aggressive on the first pitch of an at bat you watch him from the on Deck Circle so when you step in the Box you're ready to pull the trigger wherever it's at really good job by the hitter total conviction on that swing and now it's Frankie Lindor just missed for Lindor being drafted out of Mont ver Academy he's a guy that's turned into one of the best all-around players in the game righty delivers that one finds the zone and it's a ball to St Drive Red Sox by two we're here in the bottom of the fourth that one down the line and it goes just foul and a swing and a miss and that's the first out nice recovery after giving up the Homer well obviously that was nowhere near the strike zone by the time it got to the plate and people at home watching are thinking what's he swinging at but I'll tell you some of the break guys snap off these days is just devastating it can be so tough to recognize where a pitch like that's going to end up here's Pete Alonzo slider for a strike he one that one at the knees for a strike two really good back-to-back slid ERS now in an 02 count he's feeling real confident about finishing this hitter off he can go anywhere he wants kicks and deal foul off the plate they'll do it again the2 swinging a bouncer and he grabs it in foul ground and there's a rocket into the Outfield round first digging for two the throw into second throws off Target as he slides in with a double really good swing right there he got a pitch that he knew he could handle allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws here's darling Marte grounded out his first time up out in front with the swing and that is strike [Applause] [Applause] one and this one squirts away from The Catcher And the runner holds [Applause] and that one missing low not really attacking on the mound in this at bat all breaking ball so that makes me think they're not really wanting to challenge him here wouldn't chase that time this doesn't seem to want to throw him a fast ball and ball for to a board he's making things difficult for himself right now out there on the mound but you know his confidence should still be high enough to get out of this but he's going to have to buckle down right here first and second one out and now the DH DJ Stewart 0 for one he struck out swinging last time there's the strike well all eyes on the double play ball in this spot no better way to get out of this inning the pitch here's a highfly ball out to Center he's under it pulls it down and he makes the catch two down so first and second with two outs and now the catcher comes up to him Francisco Alvarez check swing he went too far and it's a strike strike two wow good luck right [Applause] there next offering is in for a strike well he didn't like those first two pitches now in an 02 hole he's going to have to battle hope he gets a mistake next offering upstairs I don't like to say he wasted a pitch I think that was a purpose pitch change the eye level have him look up now go back exactly where you want to go knocks that one away and we'll do it again swing and a strikeout tosses to First and the first two set down in the top of the fifth now it's Des at the plate singled and scored back in the first he's one for [Applause] two just missed clobber to right field way back G and they boost their lead it's 4-1 that's a swing that'll boost the win probability for sure they thought he could blow a high fast ball by him but he was ready for it look at how quickly he jumped on that [Applause] pitch base is empty with two away Tristan casus up next for the Red Sox a little out front there as he swings through it the one popped up foul territory behind the plate drifts towards it and that is that Des goes deep for the Red Sox it's now a 4-1 ball game it's major league baseball and it's on the show back here in Queens here's the third baseman Brett [Applause] batty the rightand are back to work well these Mets as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the plate chasing pitches has been a big part of the story we've seen it quite a bit today it's been tough for him to make contact at times and it just doesn't look like they're seeing it very well as a group and one and two and on the mound you know confidence has to be pretty high with all of the swings and misses he's had him eaten out of the palm of his hand pretty much all game next offering way off the play that to right auu has a beat on it he's there he's got it one down maybe caught that one off the end just a little bit couldn't quite Barrel it up enough to really drive it and now Bader up to the plate 0 for one so far right through there for a strike and that's downed away swinging a miss one and two he has a tendency to chase out of the zone and that slider that's down that's one of his money pitches to get that swing and miss gets a piece there we'll do it again one down base is empty got him swinging back to the top of the Mets order Brandon nmo now at the plate n that one missing inside two down nobody on last half of inning number five the one-1 is fouled off leftand batter weights stays [Applause] alive and a pitch fights that one away still one and two also really good at bat what I like about this guy his Bat stays in the zone for a long time gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches inside almost got him foul ball another two two upcoming a dive he's got it from his knees the throw and very nicely done for the out making it look easy at the Keystone position definitely worth another look he'll get some high fives when he gets into the Dugout the Mets with a new arm on the mound Jake Dean and we all know about a slider it's just filthy man and one of the better ones in the game I'd say spin ratees very high and it just breaks a ton now here's the Red Sox DH masataka yosida he's already homered in this game and a pitch on the ground right side the flip to the pitcher cing lead off man retired in the six really nice job to get your first out of the ball game Trevor story comes up to the plate teakman measures 6' 4 in he features a four seam fast ball a slider and he works in a Sinker a short stop takes the ball late on that fast ball as a hitter you got to learn something from that pitch you clearly wasn't timed up on the fast ball in a two- count you have to be ready to do damage that's a strike two and two now [Applause] ripped to short throw not nearly in time he's saved the effort was there with the jump throw you got to love it but it just wasn't in time still a really impressive play just to get to that ball and make it close at first and not every shortstop could even make that play and now here is Willer Abu story on the move they Pitch Out throw to Second tag and they got him they were right on top of it they guessed right on the first pitch Pitch Out tells me they had some good data or scouting report maybe it's just a feeling but either way perfect execution great throw and tag and they erase that runner at [Applause] [Applause] first and here it comes swings through that one for strike one that pitch started in and ended up on the outside edge just changing planes and very difficult especially for a left-handed hitter to track two down nobody on bounced and that got the pitcher safe at first and now after the play we'll check on the Lefty status catcher coming out to check on him it looked like it got him on his back leg so you'll wonder if that might be a problem for him in terms of pushing off the rubber yeah it's a great point and we'll have to see how he looks but to me it appears he's moving pretty well well I think it's just going to sting for a while but Red Sox four and the Mets one back now for the bottom of the six and there's a new pitcher on the mound Greg Weiser and this is an important part of this game tight score and still a lot of outs to get so they're looking for big outing out of him right here to get some critical outs the pitch mcneel the leadoff batter as he looks at ball one action in the pen down there Brenan Bernardino the three here in the bottom of the six that's a strike well in this one the offense has sputtered somebody's got to find a way to get on keep the line moving and manufacture at least one run then maybe you get two or three [Applause] hit hard on the ground to Shore and the Mets go one two three Mets go down quickly and they Trail it 4-1 welcome back we're in the seventh we have a new pitcher on the M porge Lopez pretty tight game so they're looking for Quality pitches out of him right here got to do his best to keep the score right where it is now it's the second baseman Von Grom and he deals in there at the knees and that's strike one movement in the bullpen Brooks rayy the left-hander up and throwing the pitch the other way Alonso takes it himself that's the first out the top of the seventh here's the catcher Conor Wong it's interesting he plays kind of a a power spot defensively but runs pretty well so when you're looking at that position you're not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed but he does and I think that skill set really upgrades the position because when you have that kind of speed it makes the whole team that much [Applause] better 20 what about him playing another position on defense one that require a little more range absolutely and I think if push came to shove where they had to make a a move during a game it surprised a lot of people you might even be able to put them in center field B is empty one away here in the top half of inning number seven 3-1 and he couldn't come up with it maybe a little loss of focus on the mound right there pretty much gifted him first base with a quick free pass jiren Durant will hit next one for three and the first offering is not close that one hammered center field Bader raging back towards the wall hits the fence doesn't stop heads for home the relay to the plate it's off the mark and he scores it's 5-1 well done drives in the Run came screaming off the bat I'm sure exit velocity is off the charts no doubt he squared that baseball up perfectly so there was no fluke to that triple by any [Applause] means runner at third with one gone here's rapael Des and the first pitch misses for ball one there's a strike so now one and two [Applause] that's inside and that's awfully close I don't know how you take that he's seeing the ball out of the pitcher's hand really well right now still two and two after the foul ball and the righty deals and Des hits that one and it's into the Gap into to scores the runner from third it's 61 it's a double third hit of the night for him that's two consecutive extra base hits for this team anytime you can drive a ball into the Gap the other way it feels so good and that's when you know you're right where you need to be at the plate it's even better when it gets you extra bases got to love looking in at your Dugout and see your teammates fired up Phil Bickford gets the ball now I think he's got to be a little tough coming in out of the pin when your guys are trailing so big on the scoreboard just doesn't have the same intensity to it but he's got to find a way because these batters count the same for his stats obviously regardless of the score man it's second with one away Tristan casus getting ready to hit slider Clips The Zone Sharp ER that's through for a base hit Des headed home now a long throw home but it's offline it's 71 that's now three hits in a row for the offense there's nothing cheap about the way he got that one through the infield that was ripped caught out in front and didn't get under it like he would have liked but definitely put a good swing on and next will be the cleanup hitter masataka yosida and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter casus leads off first with one [Applause] away late swing fouled to the left Feld two line drive to short and caught it's never fun going back to the Dugout after hitting a line drive that finds a glove but you will get some high fives you know when you make great contact you feel like you've done everything right but in this game of baseball not everything is in your control Trevor story up next for the Red Sox [Applause] at the belt and fires on the ground to short and that is the inning three runs on three hits no errors and a runner left Midway in inning number seven and it's time to stretch it's the Red Sox seven and the Mets W and we're back bottom of the seventh leading off Starling Marte the pitch that's in there it's O and one ball one [Applause] there the one- one is fouled off look like you got a little excited on that fast ball got to think to yourself want to stay up the middle that way if you're a little bit early you hit it out of the ballpark if you're a little late opposite field knock caught him looking for the K oh definitely a borderline pitch right there and he didn't look too convinced as he headed back to the Dugout you know those are tough ones to let go as a hitter but with the human umpire calling balls and Strikes it's always going to be on you to protect yourself with two strikes and next is the designated hitter DJ Stewart on the ground and that's just foul the Mets with a lot of ground to make up here the bottom of the seventh right through there for a strike smoked on the ground a second fires over to first two up two down now a catch two outs Bas is empty and stepping in for New York Francisco [Applause] Alvarez now a check swing but he held up whoa recognize that pitch just in time able to keep those hands [Applause] back and that's too high struggled a little bit in this one couple of strikeouts earlier but doing a much better job in this bat to get ahead and find a good hitters count at 2 and0 two and0 to count here it comes nasty two- slider there for a strike that tells you he's got a lot of confidence in that pitch to the right side Grom the throw to first three up three down inning over nothing doing for the Mets they're down 7 to one we go to the eighth so stepping in for Boston Willer Abu and the pitch and that's off the Inside Edge and that is ball one you know these Red Sox putting together some really good at bats in this game there's been a lot to like with how they're approaching their chances at the plate so far they have six hits in the counts where the pitcher has had the advantage so it hasn't been easy for them but they're finding a way to get it done right-handed reliever swings and misses and it's two and one now slapped hard the other way but foul and the right-hander [Music] deals right side hard hit mcneel gets it to first first out in the top of the eight Tyler O'Neal digs in [Applause] now that one catches the corner for a strike the Red Sox up big in this one and we're in the top of the eighth that one off the mark one and one lifted to left Center way back there and that is gone a massive home run and they add to the lead it's 8-1 he put a charge into that one that was a lightning swing right there no doubt about it when you're working with this kind of velocity so critical that you move the ball around work quickly and make sure that you keep that hitter off balance clearly not fooled by the location or the velocity he was all over that fast [Applause] ball here's the second basem Von Grom got it started a little too early strike one one out base is empty and a run in all Red Sox in this one and a foul ball one down base is empty just misses the mark outside the Zone it's a good [Applause] take not close with that one and it's two and two that misses off the outside edge really good take especially with two [Applause] strikes the punch out there and there's two down well just excellent location on that inside fast ball really locked him up and it's a hitter it's not typically what you're looking for you're trying to protect away and then in so you can be a little bit tardy with two strikes hard to tell if he was fooled or if he thought to be called the ball but either way that's a really nice pitch well struck left field that'll make it out of here that was blasted to the moon it's their second home run of the inning and they tack on to their lead it's 9-1 well he put a really nice swing on that one and everything was on time took a direct path to the ball excellent extension and just drove it out of here nothing better than when the ball jumps off your bat like that they hand the ball over to a new arm Drew Smith well they need someone to stop the bleeding and keep the score right where it is seems like a tough task today with the way this lineup is swinging it so the Red Sox lineup turns over here's the center fielder jiren Duran just off the outside edge ball one gets the slider in there for a strike no need to offer that pitch until you get to two strikes it's just a low percentage of success when you want to try to go after that down and Away pitch two outs and now one and [Applause] [Applause] two that one drilled left field and he pulls up on it that's a hit just so sound in his mechanics hits against a firm front side and the hands just continue to carry through the middle of the field so man aboard rafield Des up next for the Red Sox guys one thing that I can see already his Bat stays in the Zone on plane for an extended period of time and guys like that they have a high contact rate and they have more be because of that bat being
